  3. Intel says that Windows 8.1 tablets with the 64-bit SKU will begin to go on sale sometime in the first quarter of 2014 using the company's latest Atom processor. The news came as part of a recent investor meeting at Intel. PC World reports that CEO Brian Krzanich stated that the 64-bit Windows 8.1 tablet products will use the new Bay Trail version of the low-powered Atom processor. That same chip will also be used inside tablets that will have a 64-bit version of Android, but they will be released sometime after the Windows 8.1 tablets. The 64-bit version of Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 have been far more popular for desktop and notebook devices than the 32-bit version. A recent update of the Steam hardware survey showed that over 66 percent of the users of Valve's game download service had either the 64-bit version of Windows 7 or 8 installed on their PCs. Source
  4. Intel has confirmed that the company’s first Android tablets will be arriving in time for spring, packing quad-core 64-bit Bay Trail processors. Intel CEO, Brian Krzanich, told an investor earnings call on Thursday that Intel powered Android tablets would start showing up in Q2 2014, allaying fears following the lack of Intel/Android products at CES. Previously Intel has limited itself to Windows tablets, Bay Trail versions of which should be arriving sometime this quarter. The move into Android is part of Intel’s plan to diversity into a platform with a larger market share, but the sudden change in direction has caused a slight delay in Bay Trail’s Android release. This schedule could put Intel on track to be the first chip manufacturer to release a 64-bit Android device, however other ARM based processor developers, such as Samsung and Qualcomm, are also working on their own 64-bit chips and might beat them to the punch. Despite the marketing buzz, the real merits of 64-bit mobile processing have yet to be proven. We’re not exactly processing large chunks of data on mobile CPUs, tablets aren’t pressing against the 4GB RAM limit yet, and Android doesn’t even have official 64-bit support yet either. Although Intel has just finished work on a 64-bit Android Kernel which could help kickstart further software support. It’ll also be interesting to see how an Intel chip performs with Android. Previous estimations put the Bay Trail CPU somewhere around the Tegra 4. Keep your eyes peel for further details regarding Intel Android tablets over the next couple of months. Source
  5. Intel has the tablet market covered in 2014, according to sources with Taiwan's tablet supply chain. The silicon slinger has plans to offer CPU platforms for low-end tablets all the way to top-shelf models. The company has already released its Bay Trail-T chips for Windows 8/8.1. By the end of this year, the company will have introduced its Bay Trail-T line for Android slates. Intel's Z3735D series is a Bay Trail CPU designed specifically for low-end Android tablets priced at $99 to $129, and for 7 to 8 inch models priced at $149 to $199. These chips will be available in the first quarter of next year. For those Android tablets with a screen size of 8 to 10 inches, and a retail price range of $199-$249, Intel will offer the Bay Trail and Cherry Trail platforms. The latter will also cover 10 inch Android slabs priced at $249 and higher. The Cherry Trail chip will launch next September and is based on the 14nm Airmont architecture. Cherry Trail will support both 32 and 64 bit Windows 8/8.1 and Android tablets. That will be followed up with the Willow Trail CPU in the fourth quarter. Based on the 14nm Goldmont architecture, this chip will also support Windows and Android slates. Finally, Intel has some lovin' for smartphones as well. In the first quarter, it will release Merrifield for smartphones while Moorefield is expected to launch in Q3. Both not only use the 22nm process, they both can also be used for Android tablets. 6. Siri, Apple’s voice-enabled personal assistant software, was very cool when it first came out, but it hasn’t exactly aged gracefully. For one thing, it’s slow compared to other voice recognition services and for another it needs an Internet connection to function at all. Quartz reports that Intel is working on voice recognition technology that’s designed to be both faster than Siri and to work without an Internet connection so you can use it wherever you need it. Intel is designing the software, currently dubbed Jarvis, to run on an Intel chip that fits inside a headset that interacts with your smartphone. Although you’ll obviously still need an Internet connection to get real-time information such as traffic conditions and sports score updates, Intel’s new service will handle much more basic smartphone functions that really shouldn’t require a web connection to execute. This means that if we tell our smartphone to, say, answer a call or to play a song that’s stored on the device, it will do so instantly without the typical 3-to-4-second delay that comes with most voice-enabled assistants. “How annoying is it when you’re in Yosemite and your personal assistant doesn’t work because you can’t get a wireless connection?” Intel wearables chief Mike Bell tells Quartz. “It’s fine if it can’t make a dinner reservation because the phone can’t get to the cloud. But why can’t it get me Google Maps on the phone or turn off the volume?” Quartz says that Intel is pitching the technology to “unnamed mobile phones manufacturers, which could allow them to differentiate themselves from Apple and Google’s usual offerings,” so it looks like Siri and Google Now could get yet another competitor in the near future. 7. Intel announced its upcoming Braswell SoC at the IDF conference earlier this year, set to run Windows or Android, among others, on a 14nm 64-bit architecture. We now learn that those will finally be available at the start of 2015, over 6 months from now. Meanwhile, its Broadwell K desktop architecture, the successor of its current Haswell lineup, will also reportedly be delayed until 2015. Intel hopes its Braswell Atom will enable it to be one of the major players when Android makes the switch to 64-bit architectures. The company hopes to ship its Atom architecture in a large number of mobile designs, as well as 10W desktops and AiOs as the Braswell-D, by Q1 2015. Braswell is rumored to be able to bring triple display support and DirectX 11 to mobiles. In regards to its high-end desktop processors, Intel’s Broadwell architecture is also slated to come next year, after the current batch of Haswell refresh chips goes through its lifecycle. The Broadwell K will replace Intel’s current line of LGA 1150 processors like the Core i7 4790 K, while the Broadwell E will come in place of the 130-140W Haswell C desktop configuration. Source
  8. By NIV ELIS 01/26/2014 21:06 Intel is already one of the most important players in Israel's economy, touting a cumulative investment of $10.8 billion in the state. Man analyzes computer code Photo: Jim Urquhart/Reuters When Israel’s first international cyber security conference opens in Tel Aviv on Monday, international superstar corporations like Microsoft, Cisco and IBM will mingle with local online security companies such as Check Point and Cyber Ark to explore areas of cooperation. The conference is a culmination for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who for months has been pushing the concept of Israel becoming a “Cyber Nation,” a state that could lead the world in cyber security technology. At the Davos World Economic Forum last week, he attended a special meeting on the subject, declaring Israel at the forefront of cyber security technology. “In the information age information must be protected, otherwise there will be chaos, the jungle,” he said at Sunday’s cabinet meeting. “The assessment is that Israel, due to our special circumstances could offer various solutions in this area.” But it is possible that the company leading the way in Israel one seldom associated with cybersecurity: Intel. In 2011, Intel closed a deal to acquire Mcafee, a leading anti-virus company, for $7.68 billion. Though the move seemed somewhat baffling at the time, the company laid out a compelling reason just three weeks ago, when it announced that it was dropping the Mcafee name in favor of Intel Security. “With the Internet of Things becoming a reality, security must be embedded on every architecture and every device,” Intel’s Vice President of Global Consumer Marketing Gary Davis wrote at the time, referring to the increasing connectedness of everyday objects to wireless networks and the Internet. “We intend to make a new mobile security solution freely available later this year with the goal of providing digital security to everyone on every mobile device around the world,” he said. In other words, Intel believes that as chips move from computers phones and tablets to thermostats, washing machines, and cars, security has to be endemic to its hardware. “It’s not just a computer chip, it’s the Internet of things,” Intel Israel Spokesman Guy Grimland explained. “That means everything is more vulnerable as well. The moment the security is built in to the hardware, it’s much better.” What does that mean for Israel’s cyber scene? Intel is already one of the most important players in Israel's economy. On Sunday, the chip-maker celebrated 40 years of work in Israel, touting a cumulative investment of $10.8 billion in the Jewish state, and $35 billion worth of exports, over 10% of which were accounted for in 2013 alone. Thus far, however, Intel has shown limited interest in Israel’s cyber expertise. “Has there been leverage of Israeli abilities? No,” Intel Israel CEO Maxine Fassberg told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday. "The work we do with Mcafee affects all of Intel, but it’s not local.” That may change, however. “It’s a direction we have to explore to see what added value we can have,” Fassberg said. Intel Israel President Mooly Eden said that Israel’s security infrastructure, such as its elite army units and successful cyber security companies, make it worth looking at. “We definitely look at the opportunity of cyber in Israel and see how we can leverage it,” he said. As the Cyber conference unfolds in the coming days, the role Israel can play in shaping the global cyber security market will become clearer. Other big chip companies may follow Intel's lead. In the meantime, tech-watchers will remain focused on whether Intel will decide to build its new 10 nanometer chip factory--which could bring billions of dollars of investments and create or preserve hundreds of jobs--in Israel or a competing nation, such as Ireland. Intel executives remained tight-lipped on the status of negotiations, but said the announcement was sure to take place in 2014. http://www.jpost.com/Business/Business-News/Could-Intel-become-Israels-largest-cyber-security-firm-339425 Also see: Intel expects to make decision this year on next new chip plant By Tova Cohen TEL AVIV Sun Jan 26, 2014 8:50am EST Jan 26 (Reuters) - U.S. chip manufacturer Intel Corp expects to make a decision this year on the location of a new multi-billion dollar semiconductor plant using new 10 nanometre technology, executives at its Israeli unit said on Sunday. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/26/intel-israel-plant-idUSL5N0L003O20140126
