  1. Steam customers who use devices with the operating systems Windows XP or Windows Vista cannot run the Steam client anymore on these devices starting today. Valve Software revealed in mid 2018 that it would end support for the two Microsoft operating systems on January 1, 2019. Microsoft ended support for Windows XP in 2014 and support for Windows Vista in 2017. While there are still options to install some security patches on Windows XP or Windows Vista devices, many major Internet and software companies stopped supporting these operating systems already. Va
  2. GOG Galaxy 2.0 is a big effort to unify your digital PC game library across launchers like Steam, the Epic Games store, and GOG itself. It launched with support for console platforms through Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and the latest update expands the potential library in a major way – to “basically any game in existence.” The second major GOG Galaxy 2.0 update adds a global search feature, which lets you quickly dig through your library to find the games you want. But it also pulls from a broad set of data on – as far as we could test it – every game ever made, and you can use th
  3. Valve launches Steam Labs: preview beta features that might never make it into Steam Valve Software, the company behind the Steam gaming platform, launched Steam Labs yesterday on the official Steam website. Steam Labs makes available experiments and tests to Steam users who want to participate. Similar to Gmail Labs or the experimental flags of web browsers, Steam Labs introduces features to Steam that users interested in getting their hands dirty may give a try right away. All experiments are considered beta features and just like experiments in the
  4. Paradox exec: Steam’s 30% fee is “outrageous” Wester says modern game distribution "doesn't cost anything" compared to retail model. Aurich Lawson Paradox Interactive (Cities: Skylines, Surviving Mars) seems to be getting fed up with the "standard" 30% fee on sales charged by Steam and many other game platforms. Speaking at a Gamelab panel hosted by GamesIndustry.biz last week, Paradox Chairman of the Board and former CEO Fredrik Wester called that state of affairs "outrageous," adding, "I think the platform holders are taking too much mone
  5. Canonical’s Ubuntu operating system is one of the biggest names in desktop GNU/Linux. But if you plan to play PC games on Linux, you might want to start looking around for a different Linux distro. Ubuntu developer Steve Langasek announced last week that starting with Ubuntu 19:10, which comes out in October, Canonical would no longer provide 32-bit builds of applications and libraries. This being Linux, there will be workarounds — but many existing apps may not work out of the box anymore. Case in point: a number of games from GOG cannot be installed on a
  6. But, the gaming company isn't happy with Canonical and will try to work closer with other Linux distributors. When Canonical announced that, beginning with October's Ubuntu 19.10 release, 32-bit -computer support would be dropped, it didn't expect there would be much blowback. It was wrong. Developers and users, especially of Steam games, threw fits. So, Canonical, makers of Ubuntu Linux, reversed course and asserted it wouldn't drop 32-bit software support in Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 LTS after all. So, everything's back to normal, yes? No. True,

  8. Steam’s new, handsome “Library” update is better 16 years late than never What worked in 2003 has become unwieldy. Behold: a better way to sort hundreds of games. Enlarge / While we prefer our "handsome PC game box" collections with gatefold covers and lenticular prints, we're still pretty charmed by Steam's upcoming update. Valve As the West's largest source of downloadable computer games, Steam has faced immense scrutiny for just about every one of its practices. Among its less controversial choices is one of its most dated: th
  9. Latest Steam experiment aims to improve Search on the platform Valve unlocked a new experiment on its Steam platform with the aim to improve search functionality on the gaming platform. The company launched Steam Labs in July 2019 on Steam to give Steam customers the opportunity to test certain features and provide Valve with feedback and data at the same time. Valve Software launched three experiments in July that added micro trailers, interactive recommendations, and an automatic daily show that highlights new and popular games to users.

    Epic VS Steam

The Big AAA game publishers are choosing epic store over Steam, keep reading to find out why. The three most recent games from French studio Quantic Dream — Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, and Heavy Rain — are all PlayStation exclusives at the moment, but they’re on their way to Windows PC with the help of Epic Games, the companies announced Wednesday at the 2019 Game Developers Conference. PC ports of all three games are scheduled to be released “later this year,” and each one will be sold exclusively in the Epic Games Store for one year, Quantic Dream
  11. Epic Games detractors have no problem flooding Borderlands with negative reviews. Last month, Valve announced a new policy intended to curb the problem of "off-topic review bombs" on Steam, wherein a horde of players post negative reviews of a game for reasons other than the game's actual content. This month, that policy is so far failing to correct for some clear off-topic review bombs on Gearbox's Borderlands games. In the six months leading up to March 31, Borderlands 2 received a total of 412 negative reviews on Steam—a paltry 4.5 percent of all the reviews posted in that
  12. Commission-free Steam key sales through other stores cut into Valve's bottom line. Enlarge Getty / Aurich Lawson Since Epic started taking a 12 percent cut of sales revenue generated on its new Games Store, much has been made of whether Steam's baseline 30 percent revenue cut is justified. But a new analysis shows that Valve sometimes receives much less than that headline revenue percentage for some of the most popular games on Steam. The reason for the discrepancy is Steam keys, which developers can generate pretty
  13. Borderlands 3 lead says Epic Games Store is a needed monopoly killer. Enlarge / "You can't get us on Steam, and that's a good thing." Earlier this month, Gearbox drew some ire from Steam-loving Borderlands fans by announcing the next game in the series, due in September, would be exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC. In a massive tweet thread earlier this week, though (helpfully collated in this reddit post), Gearbox founder and CEO Randy Pitchford defends that decision and highlights what he sees as the long-term positives that Epic's competition w

To use the beta Chroma integration, make sure to enable Chroma in the plugin options, by default it is disabled! It requires Synapse 3 because we experienced those crashes with older versions so for now only the latest version of Synapse will work. Hey all, this patch adds a new Winter skin, a command line control system, a lot of minor quality of life improvements and better support for your LED peripherals. 15. Borderlands 3 is coming to Steam on March 13 Gearbox Software launched its latest looter RPG Borderlands 3 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on September 13 last year, however, the PC version was exclusive to the Epic Games Store. The exclusivity period was for six months, and right on schedule, Gearbox today announced during PAX East that Borderlands 3 will be hitting Steam on March 13. Players across the Epic Games Store and Steam will be in the same pool with full cross-play between the two platforms. The Steam store page is already up and running, lett

  19. The company added much needed filtering options to search which customers could use to narrow down search results. 23. One of the biggest reasons to use a VPN is about to disappear Valve will no longer allow users to buy games at a cheaper price by using a VPN (Image credit: Casimiro PT / Shutterstock.com) In addition to protecting your privacy and blocking unwanted tracking online, one of the best reasons to use a VPN is to receive discounts you normally wouldn't. By using a VPN while shopping online, you can save thousands when purchasing airline tickets and other items by changing your IP address to one in a different country. This is
  24. Steam has implemented new measures to prevent VPN users from spoofing their locations to buy games at cheaper prices available in other regions. While that's Steam's choice, it's an anti-consumer move that has the potential to increase piracy - or worse. Steam is the world’s most popular gaming platform for good reason. It does its best to provide users with the best possible experience coupled with broadly reasonable pricing. However, in common with many online services, it is possible to buy content from Steam for less than the locally
  25. Valve changes Steam auto update schedules to lower bandwidth stress in homes The total online and concurrent player numbers of Steam have been continuously breaking records since the COVID-19 pandemic forced many countries to initiate lockdowns and inform people to stay in their homes. Earlier today, the total player count reached over 23.5 million. Now, Valve has made some changes to the Steam client's game update behavior, but it isn't due to bandwidth issues on the company's end. "We know that with so many people at home trying to get things do
