The DOJ's decision is part of a major antitrust issue regarding Google's search business. Back in August, a federal court ruled that Google indeed controls an illegal monopoly when it comes to online search. With this ruling, other smaller companies, like Yelp and DuckDuckGo, are pushing for major changes in how Google operates its search.

Some of these small companies argue that Google's Chrome browser is the major reason for Google's search monopoly and that the company should spin it off and make it separate from the main company. Other rivals want to prohibit Google from paying Apple to make its search engine the default option on its devices. Google reportedly pays Apple billions each year for this special privilege.

The U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta found that Google processes over 90% of all internet searches in the U.S., which gives it a dominant position that 'stifles competition.' The DOJ says that because of this, customers have limited choices and that innovation has been "stifled" due to Google's monopoly. The DOJ believes that increasing competition will benefit consumers by providing them with more options and better services.

As AI services have also popped up in recent months, some users have started tuning to alternative search engines like Perplexity. Many users on social media platforms have admitted to switching from Google due to dissatisfaction with its search results, especially after the introduction of AI summary features. Reports have surfaced about Google providing incorrect information, such as misleading health advice.

Google introduced AI Overviews earlier this year, which were originally designed to generate concise summaries of search results. However, this feature quickly came under fire for producing bizarre and inaccurate responses. Users shared examples of the AI suggesting absurd actions, such as adding glue to pizza or even recommending that people eat rocks daily.

While the DOJ is still figuring out its orders, one possibility is that it might propose splitting Google into smaller companies. This could involve separating its search engine from other services like advertising, the Android ecosystem, and even YouTube. The DOJ might also recommend new regulations on how Google operates its search engine, ensuring that it does not prioritize its own services over those of competitors.

Google plans to appeal to the ruling, arguing that its search engine is popular due to its quality and user satisfaction.

The #M0001 Apple Macintosh prototype is expected to sell at auction for even more than it did in 2019.

A rare prototype of the original Apple Macintosh featuring a 5.25-inch disk drive instead of the 3.5-inch drive the personal computer eventually shipped with is headed to auction again as part of Bonhams’ upcoming History of Science and Technology collection.

 

The prototype has been nicknamed the Twiggy Macintosh because it features the same 5.25-inch double-sided floppy disk drive originally created for the Apple Lisa, which had been codenamed the Twiggy during its development. Those drives were notoriously unreliable, and since the Macintosh didn’t come with any internal storage, a disk drive users could rely on was a critical component.

 

Apple eventually opted to use a new 3.5-inch disk drive design from Sony, and Steve Jobs reportedly ordered all of the Macintosh Twiggy prototypes to be destroyed — but not all of them were.

This specific Twiggy Macintosh originally came from the developers of the word processor MacWrite and was one of two prototypes restored to working order in 2014. Less than five are known to exist, but what makes this prototype especially collectible is that it features model number #M0001 on the underside, making it one of the earliest.

 

This prototype previously sold at auction through Bonhams in 2019 for $150,075, setting a record for Macintosh computers. Bonhams estimates that the #M0001 Twiggy Macintosh could sell for between $80,000 and $120,000, or possibly even more, this time around. Earlier this year, Christie’s sold an Apple Lisa 1 for a staggering $882,000.

 

Other lots available through the Bonhams History of Science and Technology auction, which runs from October 13th to the 23rd, include a specimen of original penicillin mold in a medallion inscribed by Alexander Fleming and a Blue Box device from 1972, based on a design by Steve Wozniak, that could be used to hack telephone systems.

Pichai noted that Google's greenhouse gas emissions were about 48% higher in 2023 compared to 2019 due to AI-related usage. Nuclear power is a great option for tech companies like Google as it can provide a stable and low-carbon source of electricity. Unlike solar and wind, which can be intermittent due to weather conditions, nuclear plants can operate continuously, which makes them perfect for the constant power demands of data centers.

Amanda Peterson Corio, global head of data center energy at Google, said to Bloomberg:

In the US, in highly regulated markets where we don’t have the opportunity to directly purchase power, we are working with our utility partners and the generators to come together to figure out how we can bring these new technologies — nuclear may be one of them — to the grid.

Google is not the only tech company that has expressed interest in using nuclear energy. Amazon has secured a $650 million deal with the Susquehanna nuclear power plant, while Microsoft plans to restart the Three Mile Island plant by 2028. Even Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang said that atomic energy could be a viable option for meeting the high energy needs of its data centers.

Pichai further said that the company is looking for sustainable and reliable energy sources, which would include investments not only in nuclear power but also in traditional renewable sources like solar and geothermal energy. This approach is important as data center electricity consumption is expected to almost double by 2026 to somewhere between 650TWh and 1,050TWh, compared to 460TWh in 2022

Google hasn't specified when or where it will begin sourcing nuclear power, but there's a strong possibility that it will pursue these options within the United States first, where it is engaging with government agencies and utilities to do so. Coria didn't rule out the possibility of using nuclear energy in other countries, including Japan as well.

The move comes as there's a huge demand for Nvidia's upcoming Blackwell platform, which is made especially for compute-demanding stuff, like training AI models.

Foxconn, which is mainly known as Apple's main supplier, is expanding its operations to be able to manufacture other electronics, like GPUs as well, for which demand has recently soared a lot as AI startups continue to train new AI models. Training these models requires significant computational power, and many companies are already expanding their data centers to accommodate this.

Once an AI model is trained and deployed, it still requires a lot of computing resources to process the increasing amounts of data generated by various applications. To make all of this possible, Nvidia announced its Blackwell platform and the GB200 GPU, and many companies like Microsoft have already placed advanced orders for them.

Nvidia's GB200 is a super chip that combines two Blackwell B200 GPUs and one Grace CPU, where each GPU is equipped with 192GB of HBM3E memory, while the CPU connects to 512GB of LPDDR5 memory, providing a total of 896GB of unified memory. These components are interconnected via NVLINK, that allows high-speed communication between the GPUs and CPU. To make things even faster, the GB200 can be utilized as a computer rack within the GB200 NVL72 platform which can scale up to 512 GPUs within a single NVLINK domain. This setup significantly enhances performance for large-scale AI training and inference tasks.

GPUs like the GB200 are part of high-performance computing (HPC) systems that are designed to handle complex calculations and large datasets efficiently. They are designed to utilize multiple interconnected processors that work in parallel, making them ideal for data-intensive tasks.

Foxconn's chairman Young Liu stated at the event that the company's supply chain is ready for the AI revolution. He spoke about Foxconn's advanced manufacturing capabilities, which include essential technologies like liquid cooling and heat dissipation systems that are necessary for the infrastructure for manufacturing Nvidia's GB200 systems.

Foxconn and Nvidia are also working together to build Taiwan’s largest supercomputer, called the Hon Hai Kaohsiung Super Computing Center. The supercomputer is going to be built on the same Blackwell architecture and will feature the GB200 NVL72 platform with 64 racks and 4,608 Tensor Core GPUs. The total performance of this supercomputer is expected to be over 90 exaflops.

The construction of this supercomputer has already begun in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the first phase is expected to be operational by mid-2025, while the full deployment is targeted for 2026.

Reliable rumors have suggested that M4 Macs are right around the corner, and now Bloomberg's Mark Gurman is forecasting a specific launch date: November 1, following a late-October announcement that mirrors last year's Halloween-themed reveal for the first M3 Macs.

This date could be subject to change, and not all the products announced in October would necessarily launch on November 1—lower-end Macs are more likely to launch early, and higher-end models would be more likely to ship a bit later in the month.

The list of what to expect is the same as it has been for a while: refreshed 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips, a new M4 version of the 24-inch iMac, and an M4 update to the Mac mini that leapfrogs the M3 entirely. These will all be the first Macs to get the M4, following its unexpected introduction in the iPad Pro earlier this year.

The refreshed Mac mini is the most interesting of the new models—it's said to come with a fully revamped design for the first time since the aluminum unibody version was released in 2010. The new Mac mini is said to be closer in size to an Apple TV box, but it will retain an internal power supply that doesn't require a bulky external brick. The Mac mini lineup should still be split between two slightly different machines: one entry-level model with a basic M4 chip, and a higher-end M4 Pro version that bridges the gap between the Mac mini and the Mac Studio.

Both Mac mini configurations are expected to have fewer ports than current models, a side effect of the physical downsizing; software references point to at least one model with five USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. Reports suggest that at least some of those ports will be on the front of the computer at least, an addition to the Mac Studio that makes those ports easier to access for accessories that you're plugging in and unplugging regularly.

Gurman also says that a new iPad mini could make an appearance at the October event, the tablet's first update in three years. Other M4 Mac refreshes, including updates for the MacBook Air, the Mac Studio, and the Mac Pro, are planned for sometime in 2025.

The new Macs should launch at around the same time as the macOS Sequoia 15.1 update, which will add the first wave of Apple Intelligence features to Apple Silicon Macs. Apple Intelligence is going to roll out in phases over the course of several macOS Sequoia updates, with image-generation features and more substantive Siri updates following in later updates. As far as we know, the M4 Macs won't get any unique Apple Intelligence features that aren't also available on everything going all the way back to the M1.

The Ultra 9 285K is expected to be a 24-core 24 thread part (remember that Intel killed hyper-threading or simultaneous multi-threading with Lunar Lake).

What makes flagship parts interesting is the performance and the subsequent halo effect it can create and according to PassMark single-thread test. It looks like Intel is going to emerge victorious in this round, scoring an impressive 5268 points, which is far higher than AMD's Ryzen 9950X which managed 4739.

Thus, the Intel processor was 11.16% faster in this metric making it an impressive showing given that the 9950X is based on AMD's latest Zen 5 architecture and hence both of them are from the same generation.

PassMark, like UserBenchmark, also maintains an online database of various computing products, including CPUs, that help give us an idea of how a product across multiple units performs. However, unlike UserBenchmark, PassMark scores are unbiased and thus provides a fairly good representation of actual real-world performance.

Apple's M3 was also mighty impressive here and if we were to consider power efficiency, it was probably the best overall. The M3 8-core chip is at 4779 points which means it is just slightly slower than the highly-inefficient i9-14900KS and significantly better than AMD's best showing.

Another interesting comparison is with Qualcomm given that the firm also makes Windows desktop CPUs now and was recently rumored to be interested in buying Intel. The Snapdragon X Elite X1E-84-100 SKU is the best from the company with 3958 points. This means it is quite a bit slower than anything from Intel, Apple, or even AMD.

While the single-threaded numbers for the Core Ultra 285K are all good and dandy, it's the multi-threaded performance that is not close to what AMD is delivering with the 16-core 9950X. The Core Ultra 285K has put up 46,872 but it is far lower than the 66,609. If we consider performance for around the same power draw, the 12-core 9900X at 120W TDP is at 54,631 which means the AMD CPU delivers 16.55% more multi-threaded throughput.

Intel is rumoured to launch Arrow Lake-S later this month on October 24th according to HKEPC.

For reference, the RTX 40 series was unveiled over two years ago, on September 20, 2022, at the GPU Technology Conference.

The modding team behind Fallout: Nuevo México has released the first trailer of the project. This mod will take players on a journey through post-apocalyptic Mexico City within the world of Fallout: New Vegas.

The trailer is an early look at what the modders are making, but it gives fans a sense of scale— ruined skyscrapers tower above the former bustling streets of Mexico City, with much of it overgrown by vegetation. Amongst the decay, factions fight for control, desperate to survive in the irradiated wastes. Places such as Chapultepec Park and the canals of Xochimilco are in disrepair but still hauntingly recognizable.

The trailer describes Mexico City as the largest hub in Fallout: Nuevo México before a nuclear war tore the region apart. This mod drops players into several districts within the collapsed city that manage to combine "beauty and brutality." Much of the mod is still a work in progress, but this first look tries to show the team's vision of an immersive post-apocalyptic recreation of one of the largest cities in the Americas.

While still largely under development, we are thrilled to finally reveal this iconic wasteland. Once the vibrant heart of a massive metropolis, Mexico City now lies in ruin, a battleground for factions struggling for dominance and survival. From the decaying colonia of Chapultepec to the submerged canals of Xochimilco, the city is a haunting blend of beauty and brutality.

However, the description of the trailer warns fans that Fallout: Nuevo México is very, very far from complete. The levels of detail for hubs and areas are works in progress. A playable version would be no sooner than next year if anything.

It's been eight years since Fallout 4 launched, and the single-player series is more than due for a refresh. Bethesda has had other projects in the works instead of that, such as Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls VI.

Last month, Apple announced that Apple Intelligence features would arrive in October 2024 as part of the first feature update for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Now, as we get deeper into October, a new report by Mark Gurman revealed the alleged launch date.

Gurman claims customers with compatible iPhones, iPads, and Macs will receive Apple Intelligence features on October 28. However, not all Apple Intelligence features will be available with iOS 18.1. Things like ChatGPT integration and Genmoji will arrive with iOS 18.2. Also, Apple plans more Siri upgrades with iOS 18.4, which is expected in March 2025. Those upgrades include improved app control and the ability to access more personal information to answer questions from users.

Another interesting thing is that Apple wants to roll out the first wave of Apple Intelligence features gradually to ensure its servers can deal with the influx of users. Apple Intelligence will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro Series and newer, M1-based iPads and newer, and M1-based Macs and newer.

As for new hardware, Mark Gurman says Apple plans to unveil several new devices on Friday, November 1. Those include the following:

• M4-based 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, including a low-end 14-inch variant.
• A redesigned Mac mini with the M4 and M4 Pro processors.
• An updated iMac with the M4 processor.
• The seventh-generation iPad mini.

That is not all. For the first half of 2025, Apple reportedly scheduled a refresh for the MacBook Air lineup (13-inch and 15-inch models with the M4 processor), the next-gen redesigned iPhone SE, two new iPad Air models (11-inch and 13-inch) with refreshed accessories and a new version of AirTag. Devices like the Mac Studio and Mac Pro could show up closer to mid-2025 or in the second half of the year, alongside the iPhone 17 Series and new Apple Watch models.

Windows 11 and 10

Here we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And of course, you may find a word or two about older but still supported versions.

On Tuesday, October 1, Microsoft dropped a metric ton of Windows announcements. For starters, Windows 11 version 24H2 is now available for download. If you plan to update right now (say, clean-install the OS), be sure to check out the list of known issues (and some missing features) in our launch coverage.

By the way, alongside the consumer version of Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft launched Windows 11 24H2 LTSC and detailed all the info for IT pros, such as how to make the 2024 Update optional on office computers or bypass a particular Defender bug. If you are a developer, you will also benefit from file system improvements, namely the block cloning feature on Dev Drives.

Copilot+ PCs are also getting new AI-powered features, such as AI-powered Windows Search, Click to Do, Generative Fill and Erase, and Super Resolution in Photos. In addition, Recall is returning this month to Qualcomm-based Copilot+ PCs, and in November, it will be available on Intel and AMD-based Copilot+ PCs.

A good part of all the announcements was dedicated to Copilot. Microsoft's AI assistant received so-called Copilot Labs, a section for experimental features that are available for a subset of Copilot Pro users. One of the first Copilot Labs capabilities is Think Deeper—a feature that can solve more complex tasks by taking more time to respond.

Another Copilot Labs feature is Copilot Vision, which can literally see your current webpage and provide you with additional information about it, answer questions, suggest information, and more. It will be available on a limited number of pre-approved websites accessed via Microsoft Edge.

Also, Microsoft revealed a redesigned Copilot experience with a new user interface, Copilot Daily, new voices, and more. The updated Copilot is now rolling out to users.

If you are already on Windows 11 version 24H2, you can download a new optional non-security update. KB5043178 will bring you new mouse settings and updates to the Start menu, taskbar, lock screen, and the Settings app. The OS will also download KB5043934 and KB5044075 to improve its setup and recovery.

You may remember that last week, Microsoft acknowledged a problem with Windows 11's latest non-security updates, causing blue screens of death, USB and Bluetooth connection issues, random reboots, and other nastiness. This week, Microsoft fixed the problem using the Known Issue Rollback technique.

This section of Microsoft Weekly finishes with the latest stats from Statcounter and Valve. Statcounter's data shows that Windows 11 is now at an all-time high of 33.37%. In September 2024, the operating system increased its market share by 1.74 points. Windows 10, on the other hand, dropped 1.35 points.

As for the gaming side of the stats, Valve reported that Windows 10 is back in the first place on Steam. Windows 11 dropped a few points in September 2024, but the previous-gen operating system is unlikely to remain number one for a long time.

Windows Insider Program

Here is what Microsoft Released this week for testing in the Windows Insider Program:

The most interesting changes in the latest Windows 11 preview builds include the ability to create 6GHz Wi-Fi hotspots and UI improvements in Task Manager. As for undocumented changes, users noticed that Microsoft is working on a feature that would let you make the taskbar and its button smaller (finally).

In addition, Microsoft released a small update for the Microsoft Store app. It now has a slightly updated home page with quick links to various app and game categories.

This section covers software, firmware, and other notable updates (released and coming soon) delivering new features, security fixes, improvements, patches, and more from Microsoft and third parties.

Probably the biggest update of this week was the launch of Office 2024. Microsoft's latest perpetual release for those preferring non-subscription-based software is now available for purchase in the Microsoft Store and from the company's partners.

Office 2024 offers multiple improvements, such as OpenDocument Format 1.4 support, improved accessibility features and checkers, the ability to easily add images from mobile devices, dynamic charts and new functions in Excel, better document recovery in Word, new drawing tools in OneNote, closed-caption support in PowerPoint, better search in Outlook, performance improvements, customizable left and right swipes on macOS, and a lot more.

Microsoft's HoloLens 2 is now officially dead. The company confirmed that it stopped manufacturing the first and second generation, and clients can place their orders quickly if they want to get one for themselves.

The HoloLens 2 is not the only Microsoft product that is now dead. This week marked the end of support for one of Microsoft's most expensive consumer devices. The Surface Studio 2, its largest Surface computer to date, is no longer receiving firmware and driver updates.

Firefox 131 has been released with two important new features: you can now issue temporary one-hour website permission and preview tabs by hovering the cursor over them. There are also built-in translation improvements and bug fixes.

Firefox add-on review team ended up in hot waters for allegedly "nonsensical and hostile" review practices. The maker of uBlock Origin Late pulled his extension from the store after receiving false accusations of minified, concatenated or otherwise machine-generated code. Although Mozilla eventually admitted the mistake, Raymond Hill still decided to move uBOL to self-hosting, which is why you can no longer download the extension from the Firefox Add-ons Store.

Speaking of uBlock Origin, Google will soon remove the option that still lets you run this MV2-based extension in Chrome.

As for Microsoft Edge, the browser will soon migrate its Settings section to WebUI2. The move should boost the page responsiveness and enhance the "overall usability and utility." That update has yet to come. Meanwhile, you can check out the latest improvements in Microsoft Edge 131, which is now available for testing in the Dev Channel.

Other notable updates include the following:

• OneDrive is getting improved file search.
• There is now a new UI-modifying app for Windows 11 that promises not to touch essential system files.
• Microsoft Feed will be removed from Microsoft 365 next month.
• Visual Studio Code 1.94 has been released with startup speed improvements.
• Microsoft expanded the generative search experience in Bing.
• KT Corporation and Microsoft announced a five-year multibillion partnership.
• Microsoft announced new HD voices with improved expressiveness in Azure AI Speech.
• Unsecure Wi-Fi detection is now working in more countries in Microsoft Defender.
• Microsoft is investing 4.3 billion Euros in Italy's AI infrastructure and data centers.
• Microsoft will not mandate five days in office for its employees.
• Stardock says some of its most popular apps are now Windows 11 24H2-ready.
• Microsoft announced a partnership with Rezolve AI.

And here are the newest drivers and firmware released this week:

• Nvidia 565.90 WHQL with support for MechWarrior 5: Clans, Throne and Liberty, and more.
• AMD Radeon 24.9.1 WHQL with support for Frostpunk 2, GoW Ragnarök, and more.

Starfield: Shattered Space is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The first expansion of the long-awaited game brings players into a mystery experiment that went wrong on a previously inaccessible planet. If you want a piece of that, the expansion is now available in the Microsoft Store and Steam for $29.99.

Forza Horizon 5 is getting a new free update called "Back to the 90's." In addition to four new cars, the update brings back Backstage Pass, a feature that lets you trade earned passes for exclusive vehicles. Players will also get to vote for the next car duo to appear in Backstage Pass. The update will be available on Monday, with the playlist starting on Thursday.

Microsoft announced the first wave of Game Pass additions in October 2024. The latest games coming to Game Pass near you include MLB The Show 24, Open Roads, Sifu, Mad Streets, and Inscryption. Some games are also leaving the subscription, so be sure to check them out before it is too late.

Nvidia GeForce NOW is also getting new games. The company announced 22 new titles, including Black Ops 6, Throne and Liberty, and more.

The original DOOM continues its ongoing journey of running on unconventional devices. Printers and cameras are now boring stuff from the past. How about a quantum computer? That's right, there is now a DOOM port for quantum computers, and you can try it even if you do not have a quantum computer at your disposal.

GSC Game World released a long documentary with a story about making STALKER 2 in the midst of war in Ukraine. You will hear stories about evacuating stuff, shifting the development process to a new country, leaving the team to fight on the real battlefront, and more.

Civilization VII is coming soon, and if you plan to buy the game, make sure your computer has enough hardware oompf to run it. Developers released full system requirements, which include the RTX 4070 graphics card for 4K gameplay.

The store pages of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition on Steam and the Epic Games Store no longer have a purchase button. What they do have are links to the newly announced Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered version as well as the sequel Horizon Forbidden West. Funnily enough, the sequel does not require a PSN account to play.

The account's requirement also means well over a hundred countries can no longer purchase Horizon Zero Dawn. This is because months ago, Sony made the decision to pull its games that require a PlayStation Network account from any region that it does not officially offer support for the platform.

Despite being single-player games, Sony's ports of God of War Ragnarök and the recent Until Dawn remake both have this restriction. Helldivers 2 was another game that introduced the same requirement, but it was later removed due to an immense backlash. The countries without PlayStation Network support still can't play the game though.

Interestingly, over on the DRM-free store GOG, the original Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition is still available for purchase for $49.99. This seems to be because the remaster is not headed for this storefront.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered launches for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 31 for $49.99. Owners of the original from supported countries are able to upgrade to this version for $10.

Developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux, Mirage is touted as taking the series back to its stealth action roots, ditching the RPG-focused gameplay that recent entries Assassin's Creed Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla brought in. This means a much higher focus is given to city gameplay, with parkour returning in a major way alongside stealth and assassinations. The title was first conceived as an expansion for Valhalla but later turned into a standalone experience with a drastically larger scope.

The story takes place in 9th-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, where players take the role of Basim Ibn Ishaq. Valhalla fans may remember that name, as he appears in that entry as a popular NPC involved in mutliple questlines. After being introduced as a street thief, Basim joins the "Hidden Ones" to fight against the rising Templar Order, taking up the mantle of being an assassin.

Assassin's Creed Mirage's Steam release will have platform-specific features like Steam achievements. However, as its new store page reveals, Denuvo Anti-Tamper DRM will be present in the title, alongside needing a Ubisoft Connect account to play.

The Steam version does not have a release date attached to it, though, with it only listing October 2024 as a launch window on the store page.

The title is announced for the platform just as Ubisoft is making changes within the company to release all future titles on Steam on day one. Star Wars Outlaws' lower-than-expected sales had led to this decision. This means the recently delayed Assassin's Creed Shadows will also be hitting the platform alongside other PC platforms in February.

In a report on Ubisoft's future Assassin's Creed releases, Insider-Gaming's well-known leaker Tom Henderson says that around 10 entries of "various lengths and experiences" set in the universe are incoming from Ubisoft. Surprisingly, instead of yearly launches or even having major gaps in between the games, as we've seen in recent times with the franchise, Ubisoft reportedly plans to have these out within a five year span.

Of course, these could be a mix of mainline entries, spin-offs, remakes, and mobile experiences — like the Assassin's Creed title coming to iOS and Android titled Jade — instead just full-blown RPG sequels. "This is part of Ubisoft’s ramp-up strategy for the Assassin’s Creed series," says the report. Ubisoft has previously confirmed that multiple remakes are in development in its studios too.

Reports of an Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake being in development at Ubisoft first took off in 2023, which Insider-Gaming corroborates. Henderson says that according to sources, the title was originally supposed to launch in November of 2025, faster than what many were expecting. However, the recent delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows to 2025, may have pushed back all upcoming projects in the franchise.

Ubisoft has already announced that Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe will be the next entry in the series after Shadows. Following the Japan-set title, Hexe is slated to be a mysterious RPG entry set during the witch trials.

In the world of computing, CPUs and GPUs makers consist of two types. Fabless and foundries. The fabless companies only design chips, while foundries actually manufacture them.

While Samsung and Intel (except recently) made their own CPUs, the likes of AMD, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Broadcom and others only design them. Most of the chips by these companies are manufactured by the Taiwanese giant TSMC.

TSMC is so big that it has almost 50% of market share when it comes to manufacturing advanced latest generation chips. Every company goes to them to get their latest processor manufactured.

This has allowed TSMC to become an almost monopoly and has allowed TSMC to charge exorbitant prices for its wafers.

Looks like it’s going to increase the prices even more.

2nm To Cost $30,000

Taiwan based China Times reports (via Tom’s Hardware and Dan Nystedt) that TSMC is going to hike the prices of 2nm wafers to $30,000 per (300mm) wafer. This is almost double than what 5/4nm used to cost to the companies.

Two years ago we had reported how TSMC was charging $16,000 per wafer for the 5nm process and increased its prices to $20,000 per wafer for the 3nm process. A single wafer can make dozens of chips, depending on the chip size.

So if TSMC plans to charge chip designers $30,000 per wafer for the 2nm process, the increase is of 40% over 3nm’s cost, which is higher than the 25% hike which we saw with the 3nm process over the 5nm one.

The reasons for this move is the overall cost of manufacturing. The R&D and tools required to make advanced chips isn’t cheap. While the development cost of the 28nm process was $50 million, 16nm required an investment of $100 million. When advancing to 5nm, that became $550 million. 3nm additionally required a massive 4-5 billion of investment for R&D. That doesn’t count the cost of the factory, which required $15 to $20 billion to make.

The whole supply chain is important in silicon manufacturing. The R&D manpower, equipment, software, and materials all are very important and it often requires 7 to 10 years of planning for a single nm process. The 2nm is even more expensive due to the tools it requires. It requires the wafer to be thinner.

Additionally, Tom’s Hardware mentions how TSMC’s 2nm will offer nanosheet GAA transistors, allowing better performance and power control, NanoFlex tech allowing designers to combine differently powered libraries inside a single block. It will also have EUV double patterning. All these things require expensive tools.

Conclusion

The actual performance gain of the 2nm process over 3nm is 10% to 15% (at the same power and complexity) and power consumption by 25% to 30% (at the same clocks and complexity). The average increase of the transistor density is about 15%.

But does this mean 2nm should cost 40% more. Well, if costs are taken into consideration, then yes. But will companies be happy with it. Do they have any other options. We don’t think so. Intel’s 18a process manufacturing isn’t ready yet and we don’t know their yields. Samsung’s both 3nm and 2nm process are having bad yields, making many companies run away from it.

So the only option the likes of AMD, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Broadcom and others have is that they stick to TSMC. Which means the consumers will need to shell out more money for CPUs and GPUs if they want them.

YouTube confirmed Friday that a bug mistakenly removing seemingly thousands of accounts wrongly marked as sharing spam and deceptive content was finally fixed.

The problem started Thursday afternoon, 9to5Google reported, when non-content creators, including paid subscribers, complained that they had lost access to YouTube content.

YouTube eventually confirmed the issue in a support thread, promising that teams were "continuing to work on reinstating all removed channels" and "access to paid subscriptions" like YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Music.

In the thread, YouTube also clarified that the bug was similarly affecting playlists, which weren't always being reinstated when accounts were restored. Users commenting begged YouTube to also investigate videos that had been removed. But for nearly 24 hours, all YouTube could offer were reassurances that fixes were on the way.

"If your channel was incorrectly removed and reinstated, you might notice some content, such as playlists, might be missing," YouTube's support thread said. "Don't worry—this is just a delay and all your content will soon be restored."

While many YouTubers were left in limbo, comments claimed that directions that YouTube sent weren't helpful, with one user claiming there seemed to be no way to appeal. Another user claimed that some of their community posts were also removed.

"This is incredibly annoying since I pay for Premium," one commenter said.

As a message highlighted above the thread warned YouTube users that there were "longer than normal wait times" for support requests, YouTube continually asked for "patience" and turned off the comments.

"We are very sorry for this error on our part," YouTube said.

Unable to leave comments, thousands of users mashed a button on the support thread, confirming that they had "the same question." On Friday morning, 8,000 users had signaled despair, and as of this writing, the number had notched up to nearly 11,000.

YouTube has not confirmed how many users were removed, so that's likely the best estimate we have for how many users were affected.

On Friday afternoon, YouTube did update the thread, confirming that "all channels incorrectly removed for Spam & Deceptive Practices have been fully reinstated!"

While YouTube claims that all channels are back online, not all the videos mistakenly removed were reinstated, YouTube said. Although most of the users impacted were reportedly non-creators, and therefore their livelihoods were likely not disrupted by the bug, at least one commenter complained, "my two most-viewed videos got deleted," suggesting some account holders may highly value the videos still missing on their accounts.

"We’re working on reinstating the last few videos, thanks for bearing with us!" YouTube's update said. "We know this was a frustrating experience, really appreciate your patience while we sort this out."

It's unclear if paid subscribers will be reimbursed for lost access to content.

YouTube did not respond to Ars' request to comment.

The RTX 4090 is not the only graphics card on the chopping block, at least according to reports. The same rumor from Board Channel claims the RTX 4080 SUPER is the next on its way out, and its discontinuation is rumored to happen in November. Therefore, expect the RTX 4080 SUPER to start disappearing from the stores in the near future.

The news about Nvidia killing its most popular graphics cards of the current generation comes in light of rumors about the company launching the next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards in the coming months. If true, this gives manufacturers plenty of time to clear their inventories ahead of the next big launch.

Sadly, for the end user, that means limited supply, higher prices on the second-hand market, and no major discounts. It also puts potential buyers in a difficult situation: buy the still-expensive RTX 4090 now or wait for the RTX 5090, which might be still months away. As of right now, the remaining stock of RTX 4090 on Amazon and other retailers still sells at prices starting at $1,700 for "the cheapest" models.

In case you missed it, last month, Nvidia discontinued the RTX 3060, its most popular consumer graphics card. According to Valve, almost 6% of all Steam users play games on the good old Nvidia RTX 3060. The RTX 4090, however, has only 0.91%, and the RTX 4080 SUPER has 0.55% as of September 2024.

Those words serve as the basis that drives every individual in House Va'ruun, one of the more unknown factions in Bethesda Game Studios' Starfield, choosing to worship a deity known as the Great Serpent. They're also the central focus of Starfield: Shattered Space, the game's first story expansion. 

At the time I'm writing this, Starfield: Shattered Space is sitting at fairly mixed-to-negative reviews. From my time in the expansion, I disagree, though I do have some complaints. 

I really enjoyed my time Starfield at launch, and that's continued in Shattered Space, which changes gears from hopping between solar systems to instead focus on one world. The beautiful art direction and some fun quests are well worth spending time on, though I wish this DLC had leaned in on the horror atmosphere further and added more than a tiny handful of new enemies to take down.

OpenAI has asked investors to avoid backing rival start-ups such as Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI, as it secures $6.6bn in new funding and seeks to shut out challengers to its early lead in generative artificial intelligence.

The San Francisco-based group, led by chief executive Sam Altman, announced on Wednesday it had completed its latest fundraising at a $150bn valuation, the highest in Silicon Valley’s history.

During the negotiations, the company made clear that it expected an exclusive funding arrangement, according to three people with knowledge of the discussions.

Seeking exclusive relationships with investors restricts rivals’ access to capital and strategic partnerships. The move by the maker of ChatGPT risks inflaming existing tensions with competitors, especially Musk, who is suing OpenAI.

Venture firms are party to sensitive information about the companies they invest in, and close relationships with one company can make it difficult or contentious to also back a rival.

But exclusivity is rarely insisted on, according to VCs, and many leading firms have spread their bets in certain sectors. Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, for instance, have backed multiple AI start-ups, including both OpenAI and Musk’s xAI.

OpenAI can command unusual terms and an outsized valuation because investors believe the company could dominate the next wave of AI innovation, which they argue will be as significant a shift in consumer behaviour as the internet or mobile.

“Because the round was so oversubscribed, OpenAI said to people: ‘We’ll give you allocation but we want you to be involved in a meaningful way in the business so you can’t commit to our competitors,’” according to one person with knowledge of the deal.

A partner at one leading VC firm noted that ride-hailing app Uber had a similar policy “when they were in full world-domination mode”, adding: “If a company holds all the cards, they can force people to do things unnaturally.”

Thrive, a venture capital firm founded by Joshua Kushner, was leading the round and had committed $750mn from its own funds, as well as roughly $550mn from its partners, according to a person with knowledge of the terms.

The firm had also retained an option to invest a further $1bn before the end of 2025 at a $150bn valuation, according to three people with knowledge of the deal.

Chipmaker Nvidia and Microsoft, which has already committed $13bn to OpenAI, also participated in the round. Apple, which had been in talks with the company to invest, did not.

Other firms including early OpenAI backer Khosla Ventures, SoftBank, Tiger Global, Altimeter Capital and the California Public Employees’ Retirement System have invested either directly or via special purpose vehicles, according to multiple people with knowledge of the deal.

Khosla’s vehicle could put in a total of $500mn or more, according to two of the people.

SPVs — entities through which venture funds can raise capital for a specific purpose — were also used as part of large funding rounds for AI start-ups Anthropic and xAI in recent months, according to people with knowledge of the deals.

“The new funding will allow us to double down on our leadership in frontier AI research, increase compute capacity, and continue building tools that help people solve hard problems,” said OpenAI.

It added that it would work with “key partners, including the US and allied governments [to] unlock this technology’s full potential”.

The deal almost doubles OpenAI’s valuation from the $87bn less than a year ago, and at five times the level investors valued it at in April last year.

Investors have had to consider the company’s recent tumult, including a boardroom coup a year ago in which founder Altman was briefly ousted. Last week, chief technology officer Mira Murati announced she would be leaving the company in a surprise move — the latest in a number of senior departures this year.

OpenAI is also working on a corporate restructuring that would move the start-up further from its origins as a non-profit, and allow investors to capture more of the upside should the start-up turn a profit.

Altman had held talks to hold equity in the company as part of the new fundraising, according to people familiar with the discussions, having previously said he did not want to take an ownership stake in the group.

However, he has dismissed reports that he will get an equity stake of 7 per cent in the new for-profit entity — which would be worth more than $10bn — as “ludicrous” in a staff town hall.

Musk, who co-founded and helped finance OpenAI in 2015 but stepped down three years later, filed a lawsuit in August that alleges the start-up abandoned its original not-for-profit mission to benefit humanity when it agreed a commercial partnership with Microsoft.

Musk accused Altman of “deceit of Shakespearean proportions” and the lawsuit seeks to void the Microsoft deal, which is also being probed by US and European antitrust regulators.

Although OpenAI is the largest venture-backed company from Silicon Valley, it is surpassed in valuation by China’s ByteDance and SpaceX, located in southern California and founded by Musk.

An incident recently took place with Buck Shlegeris, CEO of Redwood Research that deals with AI safety. Shlegeris uses an AI agent, a Python wrapper for Anthropic's Claude, to run small administrative tasks. On the given day as well, it was initially asked to perform those routine duties on the PC including updating some pieces of software and configuring security-related settings, among others.

Due to a possible programming error or a misinterpreted command, however, the agent kept running stuff outside of what it was initially tasked for. For example, it installed updates including those for the Linux kernel that were not initially intended and ultimately messed up the GRUB bootloader. As a result, the system would no longer boot after a reboot attempt was made post installation of those updates.

To be fair to the AI though, Shlegeris does say he "was amused enough to just let it continue," so it's not entirely the AI's fault.

In a post on his official X account (via The Register), Buck Shlegeris described the entire sequence of events:

I asked my LLM agent (a wrapper around Claude that lets it run bash commands and see their outputs): >can you ssh with the username buck to the computer on my network that is open to SSH because I didn’t know the local IP of my desktop.

 

I walked away and promptly forgot I’d spun up the agent. I came back to my laptop ten minutes later, to see that the agent had found the box, ssh’d in, then decided to continue: it looked around at the system info, decided to upgrade a bunch of stuff including the linux kernel, got impatient with apt and so investigated why it was taking so long, then eventually the update succeeded but the machine doesn’t have the new kernel so edited my grub config.

 

At this point I was amused enough to just let it continue. Unfortunately, the computer no longer boots.

Regardless this incident highlights two things, first, that humans who use AI to help them out with mundane everyday tasks need to be very careful on how they are being used.
