	Microsoft is finally delivering a steady stream of Xbox games to Game Pass.
</h3>

<div>
	<div id="zephr-anchor">
		<div>
			<div>
				<p>
					There’s a long-running joke in the Xbox community that Microsoft will finally hit its stride with Game Pass and Xbox releases “next year.” The joke has been going around since 2018, when Microsoft made a <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/10/17446914/microsoft-studios-the-initiative-undead-labs-playground-games-ninja-theory-compulsion-games-xbox-e3" rel="external nofollow">series</a> of big <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/10/18082922/microsoft-xbox-inxile-obsidian-entertainment-studio-acquisition" rel="external nofollow">studio acquisitions</a> to create more Xbox games and make Game Pass more appealing. Year after year, Xbox fans have been waiting for a solid 12 months of new games to play, and it now looks like 2025 is going to be that “next year” everyone has been waiting for.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					The annual <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/23/24350382/xbox-developer-direct-january-2025-doom-ninja-gaiden-trailers" rel="external nofollow">Xbox Developer Direct</a> this week was nothing short of excellent, after a turbulent year for the platform in 2024. Microsoft kicked the event off with a promise that all games shown would be on Game Pass, and impressively, they’d all be Xbox Play Anywhere titles so you can buy once and play on Xbox consoles and PC. It then dropped two big surprises: <em>Ninja Gaiden 4</em> and a shadow drop of the remastered <em>Ninja Gaiden 2 Black</em>.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					Published by Xbox Game Studios, <em>Ninja Gaiden 4</em> is the latest entry in a long-running franchise that’s seen a lot of success on Xbox in the past. So it’s no surprise that Team Ninja also picked Microsoft to debut the remaster of <em>Ninja Gaiden II</em>.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					<em>South of Midnight</em> finally got a release date and a deeper dive into the gameplay and story, too. The game has a narrative that will touch on Southern folklore, and the artwork is stunning. It’s heading to Game Pass on April 8th and will be joined that month by <em>Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 </em>— the debut title from Sandfall Interactive. The turn-based RPG has been developed by a team full of former Ubisoft developers. It features a host of voice acting talent and includes turn-based combat that’s similar to <em>Persona 5</em>. <em>Clair Obscur: Expedition 33</em> launches on April 24th.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					Microsoft finished the Developer Direct with a deeper dive into id Software’s <em>Doom: The Dark Ages</em>. There’s a <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/23/24349379/doom-the-dark-ages-release-date-trailer-xbox-pc-ps5" rel="external nofollow">big focus on melee combat this time around</a> and a bunch of new UI sliders that let you adjust the game speed or parry timing. It looks like <em>Doom: The Dark Ages</em> will have some unique gameplay that sets it apart from previous entries in the <em>Doom</em> franchise, and I’m really looking forward to playing this one on May 15th.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					Three out of the four games featured in the Developer Direct are also coming to PS5 (<em>South of Midnight </em>being the exception). It was amusing to see the developers avoid verbally mentioning the PS5 during the Developer Direct, but Microsoft was more than happy to list the availability of <em>Ninja Gaiden 4</em>, <em>Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, </em>and <em>Doom: The Dark Ages</em> on PS5 at the end of each segment. It’s a refreshing change from when Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo pretended other platforms didn’t exist for multi-platform game announcements.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					But Microsoft also highlighted its own ecosystem advantage as it debuted these cross-platform games. These titles will launch day one on Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. That makes Xbox the most flexible way to buy these games or subscribe to play them because Microsoft offers cross-saves, cross-progression, and the ability to play them on PC, Xbox consoles, or stream them to many other devices you own.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					These three new games now make for a packed series of Xbox Game Pass releases in the coming months. Obsidian’s <em>Avowed </em>is arriving on February 18th, just weeks after <em>Sniper Elite: Resistance</em>, <em>Eternal Strands</em>, and <em>Citizen Sleeper 2 </em>appear on day one in Game Pass. <em>The Alters</em> is also supposed to debut on Game Pass in early 2025. That means there won’t be a month between now and June when subscribers don’t have something to look forward to, and that’s just the first half of the year.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					Microsoft’s Xbox summer showcase will then set the stage for the rest of the year and beyond. <em>Ninja Gaiden 4</em> is coming in the fall, but Microsoft has also previously announced that <em>The Outer Worlds 2</em> and <em>Fable </em>are 2025 releases. It will also be interesting to see if <em>Gears of War: E-Day</em> will make the 2025 release date I’d heard Microsoft was planning for last year.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					There could be some more surprises on the way, too. In recent weeks, rumors have pointed toward a remaster of <em>The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. </em>I first heard about this remaster last year, and at the time, Microsoft was tentatively targeting a release in late spring or early summer 2025. I’m also hoping we hear more about <em>Contraband </em>or <em>Clockwork Revolution</em> at the Xbox summer showcase.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					If Microsoft can deliver a second half of 2025 packed with games like it did toward the end of 2024 with hits like <em>Indiana Jones and the Great Circle</em>, it looks like Xbox Game Pass will have its best year yet. If Microsoft somehow fails to deliver, then, as Xbox fans say, there’s always next year.

	Just as <em>Doom: The Dark Ages</em> reveals its system requirements, Ubisoft has also gone ahead and dropped its hardware requirements for <em>Assassin's Creed Shadows</em>. However, one thing that both announcements share is the focus on ray tracing. Thankfully, Ubisoft hasn't ruled out older cards entirely just yet.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company has three ray tracing sections in its PC specifications: Selective, Standard, and Extended. Each one bumps up the graphics card requirement by quite a margin. Thankfully for budget gamers, at least the minimum requirement for the title begins at a GTX 1070\RX 5700\ARC A580, but it's only for 1080p 30FPS play.
</p>

<p>

</p>

	Check out the system requirements in image and text forms below:

	Microsoft and id Software just unveiled more details about the gameplay, world, and story of Doom: The Dark Ages, the upcoming prequel entry to the hugely popular first-person shooter franchise. Alongside it, the developer also dropped the official system requirements for the game, and it's a rather eye-watering reveal.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Doom: The Dark Ages</em>' newly revealed specifications ask for a lot more horsepower than the last entry, <em>Doom Eternal</em>, which began things asking for a GTX 1050Ti/RadeonR9 280 at the least. This time around, id is asking for gamers with at least an RTX 2060 Super/RX 6600 to play the game.
</p>

<p>
	Here are the system requirements in image and text form:

<p>
	The reason behind the much higher requirements is said to be the "all-new dynamic interactive ray-traced lighting and shadows" that are a part of the studio's updated idTech8 engine.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Xbox fans may remember that <em>Indiana Jones and the Great Circle</em> <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/indiana-jones-and-the-great-circle-system-requirements-have-hefty-ray-tracing-needs/" rel="external nofollow">followed the same path for PC specifications</a>, which uses idTech7. The MachineGames-developed new experience asked for a dedicated ray tracing-supported graphics card at a minimum to play the adventure game with a playable frame rate.

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft showed off quite a bit of Doom: The Dark Ages at its Xbox Developer_Direct showcase today, putting the medieval Doom Slayer front and center as he rips through hordes of demons. Check out a sizzle real of the gameplay above.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The studio described this version of the Doom Slayer as a tank, while saying it dropped the fast-paced "fighter jet" that was the Doom Eternal's Slayer behind. A more grounded experience is awaiting players in this prequel experience, which will lead the story upto the Doom reboot that began in 2016.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Combat will focus on three things: the guns, the shield, and the melee weapons. The studio is touting the most powerful weapons ever in this entry, letting players parry, block, crush, blow up, slice up incoming demon hordes, among so many other options. However, the pace will be much slower, with players even being able to sidestep projectiles much like in the classic entries.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Doom The Dark Ages" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/01/1737660224_doom_the_dark_ages_siege_1920x10.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	The gameplay will be taking place in massive battlefields where the player can decide what challenges to face and what underground dungeons to crawl through. This is a major departure from the series' usual linear campaigns.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"It’s all about engagement; creating a loop or “dance” that’s intuitive, innovative and loaded with depth – fun on the outside smart on the inside,” says game director Hugo Martin. “An appealing power fantasy that’s new but familiar – who hasn’t wanted to feel like an iron tank in the middle of a medieval war against hell?”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The mech and the cybernetic dragon flying scenes that id Software teased last year were mentioned again too. Instead of being one-and-done options, these were said to be fully fleshed out gameplay mechanics, letting players experience being a giant mech fighting giant demons and fly around on top of a dragon, taking out enemy emplacements for "fantasy-style airborne combat" across multiple areas of the map.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The classic Doom Slayer, the Atlas mech, and the Cybernetic Dragon all come with upgrade trees to build a fully customizable experience.

	<em>Doom: The Dark Ages </em>has now been confirmed to launch on May 15, 2025. It is coming to PC, Xbox series X|S, and PlayStation 5, while also being a day-one Xbox Game Pass drop. Both standard and collector's edition versions are incoming as well.

	Nvidia <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-expects-rtx-50905080-power-connectors-to-not-melt-or-burn-thanks-to-new-pcie-plug/" rel="external nofollow">announced the RTX 5000 graphics card lineup</a> at CES in early January 2025. Unlike the RTX 4000 Series, which debuted with only two (technically three, but the RTX 4080 12GB was killed before it <s>laid eggs</s> went on sale). This year, however, Nvidia kicked things off with four models: the RTX 5090, the RTX 5080, the RTX 5070 Ti, and the RTX 5070. Like the last time with the RTX 4000 lineup, here is our detailed spec-by-spec comparison of the newest Nvidia graphics cards with their predecessors (performance charts provided by Nvidia, and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-5090-apparently-shows-huge-performance-boost-vs-4090-in-3dmark-benchmarks-but-hold-on" rel="external nofollow">they do not represent overall performance</a>).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Before you proceed with detailed spec-by-spec comparisons for each graphics card, here are the main platform changes and upgrades that will be available across all models:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		A brand-new architecture (Blackwell) with a big emphasis on AI processing
	</li>
	<li>
		Fourth-generation Ray Tracing cores with faster performance
	</li>
	<li>
		PCIe Gen 5 interface and DisplayPort 2.1b support for up to 8K 165Hz displays
	</li>
	<li>
		GDDR7 memory
	</li>
	<li>
		DLSS 4 with 3-4x frame generation and Reflex 2 support (DLSS 4 will only be partially available on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-new-dlss-4-even-supports-rtx-20-series-but-with-cutdown-features/" rel="external nofollow">previous-gen models</a>)
	</li>
	<li>
		Next-generation NVENC encoder and NVDEC decoder with 4:2:2 color format
	</li>
</ul>

	Rumors about severe stock shortages don't bode well for Team Green.
</h3>

<p>
	<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/where-to-buy-nvidia-rtx-5000-gpus" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/where-to-buy-nvidia-rtx-5000-gpus" rel="external nofollow">NVIDIA's RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs</a> are launching on January 30, but rumored stock shortages could leave a lot of enthusiasts hoping to upgrade with no avenue to do so. A bunch of new information has come out in the last couple of days regarding NVIDIA's perceived launch challenges.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These are rumors barring any official NVIDIA acknowledgment, but the information comes from industry insiders. As reported by <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://videocardz.com/newz/retailers-aibs-and-system-integrators-warn-of-geforce-rtx-50-series-shortages-and-delays" href="https://videocardz.com/newz/retailers-aibs-and-system-integrators-warn-of-geforce-rtx-50-series-shortages-and-delays" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Videocardz</a>, PowerGPU — a system integrator looking to get NVIDIA's new Blackwell cards into its custom PCs — posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating that "the launch of the RTX 5090 will be the worst when it comes to availability."

			Worse, the info comes with a warning that the limited stock will likely continue for at least three months.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			But how bad, exactly, is the shortage? <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://videocardz.com/newz/large-uk-retailer-holds-single-digit-stock-of-geforce-rtx-5090-a-week-ahead-of-launch" href="https://videocardz.com/newz/large-uk-retailer-holds-single-digit-stock-of-geforce-rtx-5090-a-week-ahead-of-launch" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Videocardz</a> was also quick to pick up on a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-google-interstitial="false" data-hl-processed="skimlinks" data-merchant-name="SkimLinks - overclockers.co.uk" data-merchant-network="SkimLinks" data-placeholder-url="https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=23432X820454&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fforums.overclockers.co.uk%2Fthreads%2Fpatience-if-planning-to-buy-a-50-series.18998084%2F%23post-37602115&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.windowscentral.com%2Fhardware%2Fnvidias-rtx-5090-launch-could-be-the-worst-ever-can-amd-capitalize" data-url="https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/patience-if-planning-to-buy-a-50-series.18998084/#post-37602115" href="https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/patience-if-planning-to-buy-a-50-series.18998084/#post-37602115" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">forum post</a> from Overclockers UK staff member Andrew "Gibbo" Gibson. In the post, Gibson claims that OC UK has single digits of the RTX 5090 and just a few hundred RTX 5080 units a week ahead of the January 30 launch. Gibson also states:
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			<em>"We are expecting greater demand than 40 series, but with the launch just prior to CNY and lots of other rumours circulating initial waves of supply are poor and will probably take some time to build up. So the stock we have will be made available from the launch via the webshop but I know what we have is likely to last only seconds, minutes at most."</em>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Overclockers UK is a huge hardware retailer, so this doesn't bode well for smaller shops. It also doesn't bode well for PC enthusiasts hoping to jump on a new RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 on launch day. Gibson offers a savvy piece of advice:
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			<em>"My advice is if your building a new rig, do not sell your current GPU until you have the replacement in your hands and if you don't have a GPU yet, then maybe consider buying something like an RTX 3050/3060/4060 to get you up and running at least."</em>

					In the same post, Gibson mentions Chinese New Year and NVIDIA's launch schedule clashing, which could be a big reason why RTX 5000 stock is not yet plentiful. This statement is mirrored in a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://videocardz.com/newz/retailers-aibs-and-system-integrators-warn-of-geforce-rtx-50-series-shortages-and-delays" href="https://videocardz.com/newz/retailers-aibs-and-system-integrators-warn-of-geforce-rtx-50-series-shortages-and-delays" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">report from Benchlife</a> (a generally trustworthy hardware info source), in which it's stated that the Chinese New Year/Spring Festival in Taiwan and China is hampering production.

					NVIDIA's first major embargo lifted today, January 23, and Windows Central Senior Editor Ben Wilson wrote an in-depth <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-review" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5090 review</a> in which he states:
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					<em>"While NVIDIA's admirable efforts to redesign and slim down its flagship GeForce RTX graphics card have paid off with a performance bump comparable to its MSRP, it's still practically impossible to recommend the RTX 5090 FE to any levelheaded PC gamer. Sure, it's technically the best in its category; this stands as the world's best consumer GPU, but the RTX 5080 remains a more sensible high-end pick for anyone who isn't in a professional field working with AI."</em>

	Assassin's Creed Shadows may be the game we've been wanting from Ubisoft for years, and I can't wait.
</h3>

<p>
	<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/ubisoft" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/ubisoft" rel="external nofollow">Ubisoft</a> used to seem like an unstoppable juggernaut in video games, barreling seemingly unchallenged from one wild success to the next. Innovations in open-world game design and the pursuit of relentless fun have stagnated into formulaic reiterations driven by shareholder decisions and faceless committees, though; that once unshakeable momentum has been withered by constant disappointments and persistent fatigue.
</p>

<p>
	I myself have lost hope in Ubisoft over the years, and I'm not alone. An aversion to risk taking, haphazard attempts to inject "live service" elements where they don't belong, a growing reputation for broken launches and buggy games, and a tendency to abandon the few actually amazing projects (like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/immortals-fenyx-rising" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/immortals-fenyx-rising" rel="external nofollow">Immortals Fenyx Rising</a> and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/prince-of-persia" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/prince-of-persia" rel="external nofollow">Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown</a>) have toppled Ubisoft from its throne. For many, the ailing French games publisher has one more chance at redemption: <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/assassins-creed-shadows" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/assassins-creed-shadows" rel="external nofollow">Assassin's Creed Shadows</a>.

Now, though, I've actually <em>played</em> AC Shadows, enjoying a four-hour remote preview that has broken through my lingering reservations. I can't help it, I'm extremely excited for this game... And it may just be the redemption that Ubisoft sorely needs.

<p>
	Assassin's Creed Shadows is the latest in one of the longest-running video game franchises, continuing to evolve the RPG gameplay mechanics introduced with Assassin's Creed Origins in 2017. This time, Ubisoft is taking players to a location that has been heavily requested since basically the beginning of the series — Japan. More specifically, 16th Century feudal Japan, during the war-torn Sengoku period.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Following Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the last major AC entry released in 2020, Ubisoft has made a lot of changes to win back classic Assassin's Creed fans. Now, players will be able to instantly switch between two protagonists at any point, with each main character boasting an entirely different playstyle. There's the agile shinobi, Naoe, and her repertoire of ninja tools, and then there's the imposing samurai, Yasuke, a powerful warrior based off the real-world historical figure.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AC Shadows could represent the start of a brand-new era for the franchise, if it truly delivers (and I have a feeling it actually might). <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/assassins-creed-shadows-is-being-delayed-again-now-launching-in-march-2025" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/assassins-creed-shadows-is-being-delayed-again-now-launching-in-march-2025" rel="external nofollow">Assassin's Creed Shadows was recently delayed until <strong>Mar. 20, 2025</strong></a>, but it won't be too long before you'll be able to explore feudal Japan on <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/xbox-series-x" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/xbox-series-x" rel="external nofollow">Xbox Series X</a>|<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/xbox-series-s" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/xbox-series-s" rel="external nofollow">S</a>, Windows PC, and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://windowscentral.com/tag/playstation-5" rel="external nofollow">PlayStation 5</a>. Since its inception, the Assassin's Creed franchise has been known for cutting edge visuals and technically impressive open worlds. Assassin's Creed Valhalla is positively gorgeous, so it makes sense that its true, next-gen successor would push the limits even further. Well, Assassin's Creed Shadows isn't a massive leap in graphical fidelity at first glance, but an upgraded Anvil Engine and a lot more development time allowed Ubisoft to make tremendous changes in arguably more important places.

					Largely, that means a more <em>dynamic</em> open world. AC Shadows is building its rendition of feudal Japan on three features: dynamic time-of-day, transitions through four distinct seasons, and a myriad of unique weather events. The bustling towns and villages, expansive fields and farms, and serene forests and mountains all look incredible on their own, but even in my limited hands-on I was able to witness how time affects it all.

				<p>
					The world changes more than visually as time progresses, too. As the seasons roll, you may discover new opportunities, observe new world events, and witness new unique weather effects. It's not just about the big picture — Ubisoft paid attention to the minute details, too. There's much greater variety to NPC appearances <em>and</em> behaviors, and crowd density has been increased. NPCs will react differently depending on which character you're playing as, and will be affected by the weather, change of seasons, and more.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Many elements of the environment are interactable and even destructible, too. An errant whip of Naoe's kusarigama (basically a sickle on a chain) may smash through nearby crates and carts, and each mighty swing of Yasuke's sword may precisely cut through entire fences and doors. It's impressive in action, and makes combat feel more impactful.

							One moment that particularly stands out to me is when, shortly after Spring transitioned into Summer, I stepped outside of a building and was hit by a mighty gust of hot wind. The trees and tall grass in front of me were being pulled along by this wind, and debris like leaves and dust were swept past me and into the distance. It's a small moment and certainly not unique to Assassin's Creed Shadows, but it's just one tiny fragment of the dynamic, living Japan Ubisoft set out to create.

							I adored exploring the tiny slice of Japan Ubisoft set me loose in. Certain elements like facial animations and textures may not quite approach games like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/senuas-saga-hellblade-2" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/senuas-saga-hellblade-2" rel="external nofollow">Senua's Saga: Hellblade II</a> (although I was pleasantly surprised by the voice acting quality), but I'm more than happy to skip the pixel peeping and instead simply enjoy what very well could be the best open world sandbox we've ever seen in Assassin's Creed.

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									A common criticism aimed at the modern RPG-style Assassin's Creed games is that the core gameplay (especially combat) has drifted too far from what made the original games so successful. Combat feels less fluid, enemies are spongier, and despite technically having significantly more options it still felt like you were given less choice in how to fight. I was already optimistic that AC Shadows would undo some of this bad rep, and now I know that's true.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Assassin's Creed Shadows stars two main characters: the fictional shinobi Naoe, who utilizes a vast array of ninja tools and her incredibly agility to outmaneuver her opponents, and the historical samurai Yasuke, who's imposing size and strength allow him to wield the most terrifying of weapons and smash through many obstacles. You don't choose one or the other; both these characters play a critical role in the story, and you can swap between them at any point. Naoe, especially, highlights the improvements Ubisoft has made to the AC stealth mechanics, including going fully prone to remain hidden or access tight spaces.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Their playstyles are diametrically opposed, too, each with their own unique arsenal of weaponry, gear, and abilities. Naoe is the smallest playable character in the Assassin's Creed franchise, and she's also the fastest and most nimble. Yasuke is one of the largest playable characters in the franchise, and he's also one of the strongest and most deadly in direct combat. Whether you want to be stealthy and utilize your hidden blade or charge directly into the heat of battle, you can approach almost every mission and objective in Assassin's Creed Shadows the way you choose.

										<p>
											Both characters feel amazing to play as. Naoe was my preferred character for the majority of my four-hour preview, and many of the improvements Ubisoft made in AC Shadows shines here. The all-new suite of animations for combat and parkour looks stunning, and both gameplay mechanics are more fluid and dynamic. It may take a moment to adjust, but I felt like I had more control than ever over how I traversed the map, even if AC Shadows doesn't boast <em>quite</em> as many climbable surfaces as past games (I never really saw this as an issue, though, I always had multiple available paths).
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											Combat ticks all the boxes I want — it's precise and tactile, with excellent feedback from enemies as you stagger them, shatter their armor, cut into their flesh, or brutally finish them off. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to each character that make you choose your approach to combat and scenarios carefully. Naoe may be able to go almost anywhere, but she's in trouble if she's caught and surrounded. Yasuke may be able to challenge powerful foes without issue, but no one is going to miss seeing him approach.

											In general, though, I had a blast playing AC Shadows. I was only able to explore one part of the open world, but it felt like a positive shift in game design compared to recent AC titles. You still craft and upgrade gear, and you will have your own stronghold that you build up over the course of the game, so that does mean a lot of mundane resource collection.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											AC Shadows doesn't inundate you or your map with endless minor objectives, though; the world changes over time, and simply being aware of your surroundings will get you the materials you need. Missions and points of interest require careful investigation, including building up a network of spies and informants to help you track down your next objective. Items that do appear on your map tend to be more interesting, including contracts, side missions, and extremely valuable treasure. You have some reasons to go off the beaten track, too, as Naoe loves to paint wildlife as she discovers them, like a heron fishing for its lunch or a mother doe bathing her fawn.

												<p>
													I'll need more time with the full game to know if this world remains interesting and engaging throughout, but I'm feeling more positive than I have in a long time about an open-world Ubisoft game. There are other improvements that I genuinely love, too. Whenever you're supposed to be following a character, you can now press a button to perfectly match their pace and pathing, so you no longer have to worry about being too fast or too slow. If you prefer to stay true to the Assassin's Creed storyline, you can enable the returning "Canon Mode" from AC Valhalla, which makes Naoe and Yasuke automatically make the decisions Ubisoft respects in the lore.

												<p>
													My personal favorite is the "Immersive Mode." AC Shadows lets you choose your own language options, including fully voiced Japanese, but the Immersive Mode has every character speak their native language, fluidly switching between Japanese, Portuguese, and more as needed, all while respecting your subtitle language. It's an option that more games set in different parts of the world need to have. There are plenty of areas you can see the benefit of AC Shadows' longer development time, as it really does feel like Ubisoft is paying attention to the details and striving to make this the best Assassin's Creed game ever.

The last Far Cry and Assassin's Creed games failed to meet expectations, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/ubisoft-xdefiant-shuttered-report-layoffs" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/ubisoft-xdefiant-shuttered-report-layoffs" rel="external nofollow">Ubisoft recently shuttered its XDefiant first-person-shooter experiment</a>, and the publisher's "AAAA" disaster (otherwise known as <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/skull-and-bones" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/skull-and-bones" rel="external nofollow">Skull and Bones</a>) missed the mark entirely. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/ubisoft-founders-new-venture-tencent" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/ubisoft-founders-new-venture-tencent" rel="external nofollow">Ubisoft is even in talks with Tencent to break up some of its video game assets as part of a new venture</a>.
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															Ubisoft's best games in years, Immortals Fenyx Rising and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, internally missed some metrics or whatever, and those teams were scattered; even <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/star-wars-outlaws" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/star-wars-outlaws" rel="external nofollow">Star Wars Outlaws</a>, a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/the-true-objective-list-of-the-best-xbox-and-pc-games-of-2024" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/the-true-objective-list-of-the-best-xbox-and-pc-games-of-2024" rel="external nofollow">game I listed as one of my favorite of 2024</a>, still felt like half the game it could've been. For years, you've been able to rely on Ubisoft for one thing: to ultimately disappoint you in some way or another.
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															The fact that Ubisoft continues to delay Assassin's Creed Shadows shows that the publisher is serious about getting this right, and my hands-on preview two months ahead of launch lends me hope that it actually succeeded. There's still much we don't know about this game and won't until it finally arrives, but the combat, traversal, open world, and accessibility may all count among the very best in the franchise. If Ubisoft can stick the landing, it may signal a desperately needed change at the publisher.
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															Cookie cutter games aren't enough to shine through the endless morass of launching titles, especially when so many incredible teams are actively seeking new ways to innovate. If Ubisoft wants to keep up, it needs to break its tendency to stick to tradition or halfheartedly chase short-lived trends — give developers the time and resources they need to craft the games they want, with both passion and attention to detail. I've only played a few hours of Assassin's Creed Shadows, but maybe Ubisoft finally got the memo. I just hope it's not too little too late.

	A smaller Snapdragon-powered Surface Pro and Surface Laptop could debut this spring.
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft is gearing up to ship two new versions of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro that have smaller displays, designed to be lighter and more portable for people looking for a more travel-friendly PC. Both devices will be premium products, and feature display sizes roughly around 11- or 12-inches, my sources say.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I first reported on Microsoft’s <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/microsoft-surface-pro-10-laptop-6-major-update-intel-arm-ai-2024" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/microsoft-surface-pro-10-laptop-6-major-update-intel-arm-ai-2024" rel="external nofollow">smaller Surface Pro way back in December 2023</a>, and last month I was able to confirm that the company was also <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/whats-next-for-surface-in-2025-intel-powered-copilot-pcs-and-an-11-inch-surface" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/whats-next-for-surface-in-2025-intel-powered-copilot-pcs-and-an-11-inch-surface" rel="external nofollow">working on a smaller Surface Laptop as well</a>. I hear both devices are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I understand that Microsoft intends to begin shipping these smaller Surface PCs in the April/May timeframe. The company is already expected to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/microsoft-confirms-surface-announcement-for-later-this-month-teases-major-news-for-business-portfolio" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/microsoft-confirms-surface-announcement-for-later-this-month-teases-major-news-for-business-portfolio" rel="external nofollow">unveil new Surface for Business hardware on January 30</a>, but I'm unsure if that's when the smaller devices will be announced, or if they'll be saved for a more consumer-facing event.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These smaller Surface devices are said to feature similar premium designs to their larger siblings. My sources say the smaller Surface Pro has been built as a direct competitor to the 11-inch iPad Pro, meaning it should have a high refresh rate display, support for pen input, and its own detachable keyboard accessory.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I believe the smaller Surface Laptop is likely to replace the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-laptop-go-3-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-laptop-go-3-review" rel="external nofollow">Surface Laptop Go</a>, and will include a backlit keyboard, higher resolution touchscreen, and an all-metal chassis like its larger Surface Laptop sibling. I’m unsure if the smaller Surface Pro is supposed to replace the cheaper Surface Go.
</p>

		<p>
			I'm told that the new smaller variants will be powered by <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-snapdragon-x-plus" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-snapdragon-x-plus" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon X/Plus</a> SoCs, which should allow Microsoft to price these devices competitively in the $800-$900 price range while still delivering good performance and battery life. Both devices will be sold alongside the current Snapdragon-powered <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-laptop-7-copilot-pc-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-laptop-7-copilot-pc-review" rel="external nofollow">Surface Laptop 7</a> and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-pro-11-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-pro-11-review" rel="external nofollow">Surface Pro 11 </a>lineup.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Microsoft is also planning to launch <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/intel/intel-tech-tour-taipei-2024-lunar-lake-impressions" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/intel/intel-tech-tour-taipei-2024-lunar-lake-impressions" rel="external nofollow">Intel Lunar Lake</a> variants of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 next month, but these are <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/microsoft-confirms-surface-announcement-for-later-this-month-teases-major-news-for-business-portfolio" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/microsoft-confirms-surface-announcement-for-later-this-month-teases-major-news-for-business-portfolio" rel="external nofollow">expected to be for business customers</a> only and just available in the larger existing screen size configurations. The Intel-powered Surface Laptop 7 will be configurable with 5G for the first time.

	CD Projekt RED is not finished with <em>Cyberpunk 2077 </em>just yet. The dystopian RPG just received another update across all platforms with a huge number of bug fixes, but it also has something special for PC gamers looking to grab one of Nvidia's latest graphics cards.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The game now officially <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-new-dlss-4-even-supports-rtx-20-series-but-with-cutdown-features/" rel="external nofollow">supports DLSS 4,</a> the latest version of the upscaling and frame generation tech from Nvidia. Announced alongside the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-debuts-special-sauce-so-you-dont-need-more-vram-on-rtx-5080-and-5070/" rel="external nofollow">RTX 50 series graphics cards</a>, the latest version of DLSS touts Multi Frame Generation as its newest AI technology marvel.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Instead of using "brute-force rendering," Nvidia says the feature will generate up to three frames using data gathered from a standard frame. It is a feature exclusive to RTX 50 series graphics cards though, which are launching later this month.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Additionally, you can now choose between the CNN model or the new Transformer model for DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Super Resolution, and DLAA on all GeForce RTX graphics cards today," says CD Projekt RED in <a href="http://www.cyberpunk.net/en/news/51296/patch-2-21" rel="external nofollow">the changelog</a>. "The new Transformer model enhances stability, lighting, and detail in motion."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The update also carries a large number of bug fixes for the features that were <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/cyberpunk-2077-gets-dynamic-car-paints-expanded-character-customizations-and-photo-mode/" rel="external nofollow">introduced with the last content update</a>, including the Photo Mode, Vehicle Color Customization, Character Creation, and more.

					In the video published today, Nvidia’s EVP of system products, Andrew Bell, explains that Nvidia cards were trending larger and larger, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/2/24168870/nvidia-sff-ready-enthusiast-geforce-card" rel="external nofollow">and they wanted to change that</a>. “We didn’t like the idea of it taking up four slots; it was big, it was unwieldy, it worked in a limited number of chassis,” Bell said.

					Bell says that the prototype triple-fan cooling system influenced Nvidia’s <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/18/24105157/nvidia-blackwell-gpu-b200-ai" rel="external nofollow">Blackwell architecture</a>. However, the latest RTX 5090 Founders Edition card that <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/20/24347693/nvidia-rtx-5090-vs-rtx-4090-design-fans-hardware" rel="external nofollow">we are currently testing</a> achieves its goals through a modular four-part design with a separate I/O board that allows air to flow through for a more efficient and compact cooler. According to Nvidia, these changes are why the new 5090 fits in two slots on the motherboard compared to the previous three-slot 4090.

	If you remember the Nvidia RTX 40-series desktop launch, you may recall the fire hazard that the cards were potentially capable of becoming. All this was due to the introduction of the new 12VHPWR 16-pin connector that was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/alleged-amd-rx-7000-rdna-3-reference-card-leaks-and-its-already-better-than-rtx-4090/" rel="external nofollow">melting or burning up</a> leading to catastrophic component failure.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Further investigations confirmed that the issue was related to improper seating or insertion of the power cable into the GPU's power slots and this led companies to innovate to create ways to prevent this type of happening.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For example, MSI developed a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-rtx-4090-16-pin-12vhpwr-connectors-still-burning-first-case-of-psu-side-melting/#:~:text=yellow%20colored%2016%2Dpin" rel="external nofollow">bright-yellow connector plug</a> such that it becomes easy for a user to understand whether the cable is fully and properly inserted or not. Meanwhile, Seasonic made an <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-rtx-4090-16-pin-12vhpwr-connectors-still-burning-first-case-of-psu-side-melting/#:~:text=this%20with%20an-,L%2Dshaped%20connector,-that%20will%20go" rel="external nofollow">L-shaped design</a> to solve a similar issue. Finally, Asus revealed its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/asus-new-graphics-cards-and-motherboards-replace-12vhpwr-connector-with-a-600w-pcie/" rel="external nofollow">BTF "hidden connector" design</a> to do away with 12VHPWR.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Regardless of the improvements, concerns around the power connector fiasco are still in peoples' minds given that the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-5090-apparently-shows-huge-performance-boost-vs-4090-in-3dmark-benchmarks-but-hold-on/" rel="external nofollow">upcoming RTX 5090</a> is rated at 175 watts or ~27.78% more than the RTX 4090.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At a media event dubbed GeForce Update Editor's Day 2025, during the Q&amp;A session, Nvidia said that it does not "expect" to see a similar situation with the RTX 5090 or 5080 video cards with the introduction of the newer "12V-2×6 PCIe 12VHPWR connector".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here's what Nvidia stated (Korean, translated to English using DeepL):
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>When you launched the RTX 40 series, you changed the auxiliary power to a new 12+4-pin specification. With this new specification, especially on the RTX 4090, there was an issue with the connector melting due to overheating. Has this been addressed on the RTX 5090?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We don't expect that to happen with the RTX 50 series. We made some changes to the connector to address the issue at the time, and now, two years later, we don't know of any such issues.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	12V-2×6 PCIe 12VHPWR connector has shown promise in its testing phase as the connector has shown that it does not malfunction even if it is not plugged in fully or properly. We covered the topic in a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/12v-26-power-connector-wont-burn-or-melt-your-rtx-40904080-even-if-not-inserted-properly/" rel="external nofollow">bit more detail here</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Despite the assurance though, users should continue to exercise caution and make sure the cable is properly and fully seated or is not bent too steeply.
</p>

	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-debuts-special-sauce-so-you-dont-need-more-vram-on-rtx-5080-and-5070/" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia RTX 5090</a> review embargo lifts tomorrow and thus it is fair to say that most reviewers by now likely have a very good idea of how the GPU performs. GPU enthusiast website VideoCardz claims it received information from some of these reviewers about the performance of the RTX 5090 and it has shared some of the alleged figures it has received.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The RTX 5090 is apparently showing a very healthy performance boost vs the RTX 4090 in 3DMark benchmarks. While a bunch of numbers have been shared across both older and newer 3DMark tests, we will mainly focus on the tests which are more modern and are more GPU intense since this is more likely to represent a more accurate representation of the performance.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In Time Spy Extreme which is a 4K DirectX 12 test, the RTX 5090 does 25,485 vs 19,486 of the RTX 4090. Thus, in this test, the upcoming GeForce flagship is ~30.8% faster.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Up next, in Steel Nomad which is also a 4K DirectX12 test like Time Spy Extreme, but with "modern implementations of graphics technologies", the RTX 5090 puts up 14,133 points vs 9,216 of the 4090. Hence, the 5090 shows an enormous ~53.35% gain.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, on Speed Way, which is a 1440p DirectX 12 Ultimate test as it features ray tracing, the 5090 scores 14,383 against the 4090's 10,065, making the former ~43% faster.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Overall, from these benchmarks, it looks like the RTX 5090 could be a massive upgrade for 4090/4080 or 7900 XTX/XT owners, especially considering both the newer tests show excellent performance. However, the report notes that testers are not seeing anywhere close to these big gains in actual games with the overall performance hovering much more around ~20%. VideoCardz writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		One important note is that, while the data is accurate and confirmed by multiple sources, synthetic benchmarks tend to show greater performance gains than gaming scenarios for RTX 5090. On average, gamers can expect about a 20% performance improvement over the RTX 4090, according to reviewers we spoke with. However, this will vary significantly depending on the game, resolution, and settings.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	This is somewhat in line with what an Nvidia official said recently when he admitted that the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-admits-rtx-5070-nowhere-near-4090-performance-without-dlss-fake-frames/" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5070 is nowhere near 4090</a> performance without DLSS.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As for why the purported RTX 5090 is not showing gaming performance closer to what the synthetics are getting, one reason could be driver optimization and overhead issues. Another reason could be CPU bottlenecking in the case of games which is far less pronounced in synthetic tests.
</p>

	The Doom Slayer's return was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/doom-the-dark-ages-confirmed-will-launch-in-2025-for-pc-xbox-and-ps5/" rel="external nofollow">made official last year</a> during Microsoft's summer games showcase, with id Software once again heading development to give players a brand-new, fast-paced, and carnage-filled shooter entry. Dubbed <em>Doom: The Dark Ages</em>, the game is also supposed to receive a deep dive at the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-says-it-will-unveil-a-mystery-game-at-the-xbox-developerdirect-later-this-month/" rel="external nofollow">Xbox Developer_Direct showcase</a> this week. However, it seems a leak has revealed the release date ahead of schedule.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The report lands from ResetEra user <a href="https://www.resetera.com/threads/doom-the-dark-ages-releasing-on-may-15-2025.1088169/" rel="external nofollow">Alexzan</a>, who noticed the French publication Gamekult seems to have accidentally posted an article about <em>DOOM: The Dark Ages </em>ahead of an embargo. While the post had been pulled quickly, the site's RSS feed had saved the title and excerpt.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The translated title has revealed a May 15, 2025, launch date for <em>DOOM: The Dark Ages</em>. Of course, Microsoft, Bethesda, and id Software are yet to announce anything firm regarding the release, with only a 2025 window attached to the game so far.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those unfamiliar with the latest entry, here's how the prequel experience is described by id:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Developed by id Software, <em>DOOM: The Dark Ages</em> is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells the epic cinematic origin story of the Doom Slayer’s rage. In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the Doom Slayer in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.

<p>
	The studio is set to give a much broader look at the FPS tomorrow, January 23, during the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-says-it-will-unveil-a-mystery-game-at-the-xbox-developerdirect-later-this-month/" rel="external nofollow">2024 Developer_Direct from Xbox</a>. Microsoft has released a new Alpha-Skip Ahead update for Xbox Insides with a few fixes and one important change. Starting with build 2502.250120-2200, Xbox consoles received support for external drives with capacities larger than 16 TB. You can connect and format big-sized hard drives to accommodate massive game libraries and applications.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft notes that drives larger than 16 TB should be reformatted to work with Xbox consoles. Upon formatting, the operating system will split the drive into multiple partitions, and thus, users will see several drives in the list of connected devices.

	Owlcat Games' breakout CRPG love letter to the Warhammer 40,000 universe has surpassed expectations to sell over a million units worldwide

	On January 21, 2025, Owlcat Games announced on social media that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/warhammer-40000-rogue-trader" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/warhammer-40000-rogue-trader" rel="external nofollow">Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader</a> has managed to sell over one million copies. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a CRPG released in 2023 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. You play as the Rogue Trader, a leader of a trading empire who is tasked by Imperium of Man to venture into an uncharted galactic region known as the Koronus Expanse and conquer it in the name of the God-Emperor.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			It was the first-ever CRPG videogame set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and received heaps of praise from critics and fans for its dark yet engrossing story and characters, engaging exploration and combat, tons of replay value thanks to its game-changing morality choices, and for being a fun and approachable gateway drug for newcomers who want to learn the lore of Warhammer 40,000.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Some of us here at Windows Central also immensely enjoyed Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. Our own Samuel Talbert rated the game 4/5 stars in his <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/warhammer-40000-rogue-trader-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/warhammer-40000-rogue-trader-review" rel="external nofollow">Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader review</a>, and it even won our Editor's Choice Award during the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/windows-central-game-awards-2024" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/windows-central-game-awards-2024" rel="external nofollow">Windows Central 2024 Game Awards</a>.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			As a long-time Warhammer 40,000 fan, I couldn't be happier to see Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader achieve this milestone success, as I feel it rightfully deserves it for being such an awesome love letter to the franchise. This game was one of the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/best-pc-games-of-all-time-our-top-picks-you-should-play-in-year" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/best-pc-games-of-all-time-our-top-picks-you-should-play-in-year" rel="external nofollow">best PC titles</a> I played in 2024, and I cannot wait to see what Owlcat Games has in store for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader in the grim-dark future as its 2nd DLC expansion is set to come out later this year.

	Warhorse Studios is almost ready to ship <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kingdom-come-deliverance-2-system-requirements-are-here-and-they-are-pretty-reasonable/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2</em></a>, the next entry in the role-playing series offering players a period-authentic medieval experience. While the campaign is supposed to last dozens of hours, offering fans plenty of locations to explore, quests to delve into, and storylines to progress, the studio has no plans of slowing down the momentum following the launch.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Today, Warhorse Studios and publisher Plaion announced the post-launch roadmap for the RPG—at least what's incoming in the launch year. If everything goes to plan, 2025 is slated to be filled with both paid and free content, with the first drop landing in spring.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The spring content bundle will be a free one, offering players new ways to customize the returning protagonist Henry with the addition of a barber. At the same time, those who want a tougher challenge than the launch difficulty settings will receive a Hardcore Mode. Lastly, the update will introduce a Horse Racing activity to the base game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Warhorse plans to deliver three paid expansion packs for <em>Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 </em>in 2025's summer, autumn, and winter. Here are the details:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Summer</strong>: Brushes with Death – Embark on a thrilling quest as Henry aids an enigmatic artist with a shadowy past. Journey across the lands of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, facing perilous encounters and unravelling a web of dangerous schemes.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Autumn</strong>: Legacy of the Forge – Dive into Henry’s roots by exploring the legacy of Martin, his adoptive father. Work to restore a once-renowned forge and prove your skills in the art of blacksmithing as you uncover forgotten tales of the past.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Winter</strong>: Mysteria Ecclesia – Enter the Sedlec Monastery, where intrigue runs deep. Tasked with a covert mission, Henry must navigate the complex dynamics of the region, discovering hidden truths and navigating a maze of conflicting interests.
		</li>
	</ul>

<p>

<p>
	The expansions will be available for purchase separately as well as part of the game's season pass. The game's <a href="https://www.kingdomcomerpg.com/editions/gold" rel="external nofollow">Gold Edition </a>package buyers will also receive the expansions for no extra cost.

	Recently, we conducted our performance overview of an in-place upgrade from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2 with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/windows-11-24h2-vs-23h2-in-place-upgrade-performance-in-2025-some-super-surprising-results/" rel="external nofollow">some scenarios showing interesting outcomes</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, upgrading to Windows 11 may not be an option for everyone as some Windows 10 PCs may not meet the system requirements. As the Windows 10 <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-365-apps-like-outlook-may-stop-working-fully-if-you-dont-update-to-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">end-of-support date approaches</a>, an option for users who can't upgrade will be switching to Linux, as ESET itself recommended recently to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/eset-recommends-installing-linux-if-your-unsupported-windows-11-pc-cant-update-from-10/" rel="external nofollow">stay in support</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you use your PC mainly for gaming and are wondering what kind of performance you may see from a jump to the other side, there is some good<em>ish</em> news for you in case you have an AMD Radeon GPU. That is because the AMD cards tended to perform fairly similarly on both Windows 10 and Linux. This was not the case with Nvidia as there was a significant performance loss.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The testing was conducted by a YouTube channel Tech YES City and Bazzite was the choice of Linux distro for this comparison. This was a re-test since in the previous round, certain errors were made like not enabling the Steam compatibility layer which led to sub-optimal performance.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Bazzite is based on Fedora Atomic and the distro tries to make it easy for Linux newcomers. On its official website, Bazzite <a href="https://bazzite.gg/" rel="external nofollow">writes</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Bazzite is designed for Linux newcomers and enthusiasts alike with Steam pre-installed, HDR &amp; VRR support, improved CPU schedulers for responsive gameplay, and numerous community-develod tools and tweaks to streamline your gaming and streaming experience.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Coming back to the point of performance, first, we have <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em>, which shows lowered output on Bazzite on the RTX 4090. It happens on both 1440p and 2160p (4K).
</p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Black Myth Wukong</em> also exhibits performance loss on the Nvidia side on Bazzite (Linux):
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Bazzite Linux gaming perf vs Windows 10" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/01/1737387130_linux_bazzite_vs_windows_10_source_tyc_youtube_6.jpg">

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Hence, it looks like Nvidia GPU users will have to settle for lower performance compared to their corresponding AMD counterparts if they were to switch from Windows to Linux as the Radeon card showcased a more consistent performance profile across the two OSs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of GPUs, Bazzite requires GPUs to support Vulkan version 1.3 or newer, and on the CPU side, a 64-bit processor (AMD64/x86_64). An easy way to know whether your GPU is Vulkan 1.3 compatible is to download and install <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/gpu-z/" rel="external nofollow">GPU-Z</a>, heading to the Advanced tab and clicking on the drop-down menu to check the Vulkan version. For example, on my RX 6800 XT, it is Version 1.3.280.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A couple of weeks into 2025 and nominally refreshed from my time away over the holidays, I want to take a look at gaming trends and possible stories that I'm expecting to see dominate 2025. I recently wrote about the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/the-gaming-stories-and-trends-that-defined-2024" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/the-gaming-stories-and-trends-that-defined-2024" rel="external nofollow">most important gaming trends and stories in 2024</a>, so you can think of this as something of a sequel to that piece.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	From the impending arrival of one of the biggest games of all time, to new gaming hardware finally popping up, there's a lot to be curious, cautious, and excited about all at once. We'll see about revisiting this at the end of the year and seeing how I did, but for now, let's dive in.

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			I've previously talked about the problem of "black hole" games, titles that are evergreen or yearly (sometimes both). These titles include the likes of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/call-duty" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/call-duty" rel="external nofollow">Call of Duty</a>, Fortnite, and more, taking up a significant chunk of the time and money people are spending on games. This year, there's one heck of a shuffle coming that <em>could</em> shake things up.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive's <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/grand-theft-auto-6" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/grand-theft-auto-6" rel="external nofollow">Grand Theft Auto 6</a> is primed to be one of the biggest games of the year when it launches across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 at some point this fall. If any game has a chance of pulling people away and getting them to spend time on something else and <em>keep spending that time elsewhere</em>, it's Grand Theft Auto 6.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Of course, there are a couple of huge asterisks attached to this. Will Grand Theft Auto 6 include any kind of online component at launch? If not, how long will it take to arrive? Most important of all, will the game actually release this year?

								<p>
									All of that is cool, and I'm really interested in seeing how well they'll all do. When it comes to the best-selling devices of the year, however, they're all going to need to take a huge step back. Nintendo has finally announced the Nintendo Switch 2, its long-awaited successor that seems to pack a slightly larger design and more powerful hardware.

													Make no mistake, it won't be anywhere remotely near the volume or cadence of what Xbox is doing, but there will be a tactical shift. <em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2</em> has gone through a couple of release date changes already, with one of them even <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kingdom-come-deliverance-2-goes-gold-will-now-launch-a-week-early/" rel="external nofollow">pulling forward the launch</a>. Today, it has been revealed that another release date adjustment has been made, but it's only affecting a single, newly announced platform.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	CD Projekt's GOG store is now also another PC games store that will receive the medieval RPG from Warhorse Studios. The store is known for its sale of games without any attached digital rights management (DRM) software.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the game will not arrive to GOG on the same day it's releasing on other platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store. The game will be available on the DRM-free platform sometime in spring 2025.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We couldn't be happier to announce that <a href="https://www.gog.com/en/game/kingdom_come_deliverance_ii" rel="external nofollow"><em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2</em></a> and its <em>Gold Edition</em> are coming DRM-free to GOG this Spring," <a href="https://www.gog.com/news/kingdom_come_deliverance_ii_is_coming_to_gog_this_spring" rel="external nofollow">says the announcement</a> from the GOG store."It's time to start preparing for Henry's next adventures in this potentially GOTY-worthy RPG from our friends at Warhorse Studios. Ready to crown your library with this beautiful creation and keep it forever? Because we sure are!"

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With a broad release window like spring 2025, what's unclear is just how long GOG fans will have to wait before they can jump into the medieval experience. The original <em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance </em>from 2018 also had a delay attached to the GOG version, but it was only a slight one, with it releasing only a few weeks after the Steam landing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Moreover, keep in mind that Warhorse has already announced that <em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 </em>won't have any sort of DRM on PC platforms, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kingdom-come-deliverance-2-wont-have-denuvo-or-any-sort-of-drm/" rel="external nofollow">not even Denuvo</a>. </p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 </em>is releasing on February 4, 2025 across PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
</p>

Built by Nvidia.” — holds a new power adapter cable for the RTX 5090 that includes an updated version of the regular 12VHPWR connector. You’ll need to use four regular PCIe eight-pin power connectors with this adapter, or a new 12V-2x6 cable. The 12V-2x6 is almost identical to the existing 12VHPWR, as the new connector has shorter sensing pins and slightly longer conductor terminals. The slight variation means that existing 12VHPWR cables will work with the RTX 5090 just fine.

				</p>

			<div>
				<p>
					The RTX 5090 itself is the same width and length as an RTX 4090, but it’s a lot slimmer now because it’s just a two-slot card. Compared to the three-slot RTX 4090, it’s impressive to see that Nvidia has managed to shrink its latest flagship GPU into this smaller form factor.

					These exterior design changes also mean Nvidia has overhauled its cooling for the RTX 5090. It has moved to double flow-through fans that suck cooler air from below and exhaust it above the RTX 5090 into the rest of the case. There’s no rear exhaust on the RTX 5090 like there is on the RTX 40-series Founders Edition cards, but there are two little slots on either side to create an airflow boundary of sorts so that the warm air that’s exhausting out the top doesn’t recirculate below.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</div>

			<div>
				<p>
					The PCB of the RTX 5090 is now located in the middle of the GPU, surrounded by big heat pipes that get cool air from the dual flow-through fans. This allows Nvidia to make the RTX 5090 Founders Edition small form factor certified, so it can fit into a variety of small cases. Nvidia has also relocated the power connector to be angled at the side, so it should be easier to fit into cases where the side panel comes close to touching the power cable.

		At the rear there are three DisplayPort 2.1b ports and a single HDMI 2.1b port. Interestingly, Nvidia has flipped the ports upside down, so if you’re used to plugging your cables in a particular way or you have some tight cable management at the rear of your PC you’ll need to flip your cables accordingly.

		Much like previous Founders Edition cards, the RTX 5090 also has LEDs that light up at the top and side of the card in white. Nvidia has also picked a slightly darker gray for the metal housing of the RTX 5090. It’s not as light as the regular RTX 40-series Founders Edition cards, but it’s also nowhere near as black as the RTX 40-series Super variants. It’s a refined color between the two.

		We aren’t allowed to show the RTX 5090 inside a PC or powered on with its LED lights blazing just yet, but <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkc9E726K3I" rel="external nofollow">Jayztwocents got</a> “special permission” to do a small form factor build if you’re interested in seeing how it squeezes into a small case. We’ll be back soon with a full review of the RTX 5090 to see exactly how it compares to the RTX 4090.

	Generative AI (GenAI) is growing as we speak. Now, the tech isn't just limited to throwing random questions at a chatbot in your web browser. Companies have started <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/these-ai-powered-video-features-tipped-to-be-a-part-of-the-galaxy-s25-series/" rel="external nofollow">marketing smartphones</a> and laptops as GenAI-capable, Copilot+, or AI PCs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to the latest numbers published by Counterpoint Research, over 25%, or one in every four laptops shipped in 2024, was GenAI capable. Over 253 million PCs across various brands were shipped in 2024, recording an increase of 2.6% from 2023.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The PC market recorded a 3.7% shipment growth in Q4 2024 year-over-year, led by the holiday season and subsidy policy from the Chinese government. "We believe the PC market has recovered to normal seasonality and entered a new phase after the launch of AI PCs in 2024," the firm said in its report.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, other significant factors have contributed to the rise. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-tells-users-to-upgrade-to-windows-11-while-its-free-for-a-limited-time-only/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10's upcoming end-of-life</a> kept a steady flow of PC orders from enterprises looking for system upgrades before October 2025.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ai-capable-pcs-made-up-20-of-shipments-during-q3-2024/" rel="external nofollow">Canalys reported</a> in November last year that AI-enabled PC made up 20% of the shipments in Q3 2024. Gartner also predicted that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/gartner-predicts-ai-laptops-will-dominate-business-market-by-2026/" rel="external nofollow">AI PCs will dominate</a> the business market by 2026.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">

</figure>

<p>
	Speaking by the numbers, Lenovo came first in the global PC shipment race with a 4.6% growth year-over-year and shipped 61.8 million units. It was followed by an almost flat growth from HP (0.2%) and a U-turn by Dell with a negative growth of -1.3%.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple, which launched its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-intelligence-launches-with-ios-181-ipados-181-and-macos-sequoia-151/" rel="external nofollow">Apple Intelligence</a> suite of AI features, had a rough spell in the first half of 2024. It was saved by modest growth after the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-refreshes-its-macbook-pro-lineup-with-new-m4-pro-and-m4-max-models/" rel="external nofollow">new MacBook Pro</a> arrived at the end of the year. Processor brands such as AMD's Strix Point, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite series, and Intel's Lunar Lake have powered AI PC solutions in 2024.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/copilot-plus-pcs-is-the-new-name-for-windows-pcs-with-ai-chips" rel="external nofollow">Copilot+ PC branding</a> introduced at Microsoft Build in May 2024 is a class of Windows 11 devices packing a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/here-are-the-exclusive-features-you-get-with-windows-11-copilot-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">handle AI-extensive workloads</a> such as real-time translations and image generation. Moreover, the AI PCs powered by NVIDIA's RTX 3000/4000 series GPUs can also handle GenAI applications efficiently, contributing to shipment growth in 2024.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"AI laptops continued to gather steam in 2024 with AMD, Qualcomm and Intel driving Copilot+ laptop PCs and NVIDIA driving GenAI-capable high-performance laptop PCs," Counterpoint said.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The firm expects AI PCs to capture about 60% of the laptop market in 2025. On-device processing offered by premium GenAI PCs is expected to trickle down to the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/qualcomm-unveils-new-snapdragon-x-chip-for-600-copilot-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">mid-tier PC segment</a> in terms of hardware and software, fueling shipment growth.

	What an absolute rollercoaster of a week it’s been. The trending topic this week has been the TikTok ban in the US. Some users were so freaked out by the potential ban that they started <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/users-are-flocking-to-another-chinese-social-media-app-as-the-tiktok-ban-looms/" rel="external nofollow">setting up camp on Rednote</a>, another social media app from China.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Earlier this week, TikTok <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/report-tiktok-denies-claims-of-possible-sale-to-elon-musk/" rel="external nofollow">denied reports of plans to sell its US assets </a>to Elon Musk and, today, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tiktok-modifies-closing-message-to-mention-donald-trump/" rel="external nofollow">updated its shutdown message</a> to reference Donald Trump.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Still on the topic of TikTok and Trump, TikTok has released a statement reassuring users that service restoration is underway. Here's the statement from <a href="https://x.com/TikTokPolicy/status/1881030712188346459?t=b72qmPY6L0Hfu2HCFnoCVA&amp;s=19" rel="external nofollow">@TikTokPolicy on X</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>STATEMENT FROM TIKTOK:</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties for providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Let’s not forget that it was the Trump administration that started the <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/president-trump-ban-tiktok-united-states/story?id=72115533" rel="external nofollow">whole "let’s ban TikTok because of national security" tirade back in 2020</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, it looks like Trump’s opinion on the matter has softened. In a statement he <a href="https://x.com/MorningBrew/status/1881020823903023380?t=bpkJ2X3wIJxisnnFXN_jDg&amp;s=19" rel="external nofollow">posted on Truth Social</a> (Trump’s own social media app, which he set up after<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/donald-trump-has-been-permanently-banned-from-twitter/" rel="external nofollow"> getting banned from Twitter</a>), he claimed that without U.S. approval, there is no TikTok.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	He also mentioned he’d be signing an executive order on Monday to "extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect" so that a deal can be made to ensure national security.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Trump is proposing a joint venture between TikTok’s current owners and new owners, with the US getting 50% ownership.
</p>

<p>
