	Today, on January 29, 2025, Microsoft published the results of the second quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. During the period, Microsoft generated $69.6 billion in revenue, with a 12% increase year-over-year. Following its latest<em> Dragon Age</em> game's launch, BioWare confirmed that its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/biowares-full-attention-now-on-mass-effect-no-dlc-planned-for-dragon-age-the-veilguard/" rel="external nofollow">full focus has been turned</a> to making the next <em>Mass Effect</em> game. However, in a new <a href="https://blog.bioware.com/2025/01/29/bioware-studio-update/" rel="external nofollow">studio update</a>, BioWare general manager<br>
	Gary McKay today revealed that many of the company's staff are being moved to different positions at EA, leaving a "core team" to work on the next project.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"In keeping with our fierce commitment to innovating during the development and delivery of <em>Mass Effect</em>, we have challenged ourselves to think deeply about delivering the best experience to our fans," says Mckay. "We are taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A <a href="https://www.ign.com/articles/mass-effect-5-bioware-doesnt-require-support-from-the-full-studio-ea-moves-some-staff-to-other-teams" rel="external nofollow">report from IGN</a> adds that some positions have been terminated entirely as a part of this restructuring, though these staff are also being offered a chance to apply for other EA positions. EA had declined to give exact numbers of affected staff when asked for comment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio," continues the post from GM Gary McKay. "We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The team working on the next <em>Mass Effect</em> entry is being led by a number of veterans from the classic trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others. McKay added that the latest changes will help make BioWare "a more agile, focused studio." The company has been <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/bioware-says-to-not-expect-major-news-about-next-mass-effect-for-n7-day-this-year/" rel="external nofollow">dropping hints</a> about <em>Mass Effect 5 </em>for a few years now, but it's still in early development stages.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It was revealed last week that <em>Dragon Age: The Veilguard</em> had <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/despite-having-15-million-players-dragon-age-the-veilguard-missed-ea-targets-by-50/" rel="external nofollow">missed EA expectations by 50%</a>, reaching only 1.5 million players since launch. <em>The Veilguard's</em> game director, Corinne Busche, also <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/dragon-age-the-veilguard-game-director-is-exiting-bioware/" rel="external nofollow">exited BioWare recently</a>.

	Four major PlayStation games on PC no longer require using Sony's PSN service.
</h3>

<p>
	While countless PC gamers have come to enjoy the plethora of PlayStation exclusives that have been ported to Steam and other storefronts in recent years, a policy that Sony recently began enforcing has angered many in the community: PlayStation Network (PSN) requirements. Since last year, the firm has made signing up for one and using it while playing mandatory for nearly all newly released PlayStation Studios titles.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This began last May, when <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/helldivers-2-sees-uproar-as-sony-re-introduces-a-mandatory-requirement-on-pc-players" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/helldivers-2-sees-uproar-as-sony-re-introduces-a-mandatory-requirement-on-pc-players" rel="external nofollow">Sony began requiring PSN accounts for new and existing Helldivers 2 players alike</a>, leading to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/sony-apologies-and-says-theyre-removing-the-requirement-for-a-psn-account-on-helldivers-2-a-day-after-removing-it-from-steam-for-over-2-billion-people" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/sony-apologies-and-says-theyre-removing-the-requirement-for-a-psn-account-on-helldivers-2-a-day-after-removing-it-from-steam-for-over-2-billion-people" rel="external nofollow">an uproar that eventually saw the firm backpedal</a>. But while Arrowhead Game Studios' co-op shooter didn't require PSN accounts anymore, Sony quickly started asking for them in new ports like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/ghost-of-tsushima" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/ghost-of-tsushima" rel="external nofollow">Ghost of Tsushima</a>, and even prevented players in the 100+ regions where PSN is not available from purchasing those games. And despite constant protests from PC players, the company hasn't budged on the matter...at least, not until now.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On Wednesday, Sony <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://blog.playstation.com/2025/01/29/new-in-game-content-incentives-coming-to-playstation-games-on-pc/" href="https://blog.playstation.com/2025/01/29/new-in-game-content-incentives-coming-to-playstation-games-on-pc/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> that four PlayStation games on PC will no longer require PSN accounts in order to play them. Specifically, these titles include Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (releasing tomorrow on January 30), <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/god-of-war" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/god-of-war" rel="external nofollow">God of War</a> Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part II Remastered (coming April 3, 2025), and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered; without PSN requirements, all of these will <em>presumably</em> become available to all players globally, though that will<em> </em>require Sony relisting them for sale in the territories where you can't sign up.

			Sony's decision to walk its policy back for these games came within a larger post about benefits it's going to offer to people who <em>do </em>use PSN to play them. The bonuses you'll get in each game for signing in with a PSN account are listed in the table below:

				<p>
					Ultimately, it looks like Sony is shifting to try and entice PC players to use PSN instead of <em>forcing </em>them to, which is probably what it should have been doing from the get-go in order to avoid drawing the ire of the community.

With any luck, the requirements will be lifted across PlayStation Studios' full library in short order; titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Until Dawn still require one, after all, and that's stopping a ton of players from enjoying them. And hey, if you live somewhere where PSN <em>is </em>available and you don't mind using it, you'll likely be able to snag yourself some extra in-game goodies.

	The first community update for <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 </em>is here, and Saber Interactive <a href="https://community.focus-entmt.com/focus-entertainment/space-marine-2/blogs/145-january-community-update" rel="external nofollow">has detailed</a> a bunch of new features it's soon bringing to the hit action game. In the coming weeks, the studio will add the widely requested FOV adjustment slider to the game, another PVP map, new skins, a cross-play toggle, and much more for players.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Update 6.0 is slated to hit all platforms soon, and that's when the FOV slider will be implemented. It will be especially useful for ultra-wide monitor users, letting them expand their sight lines much further than before. "While implementing it has been technically challenging, we’ve finally managed to produce a slider worthy of our standards," says the studio.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The 6.0 update will also carry the Tomb PVP map, one that's described as having many narrow passages for a more close quarter arena than other maps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The studio is also working on adding the Biovore, a brand-new enemy type for PVE missions that feature Tyranids. This Extremis enemy shoots Spore Mines, making it a threat in both long-range and up-close encounters. A new Datavault area is also being added to the mission select hub, which will let players complete special in-game missions, like "Make a Carnifex stun itself in Operations mode," to unlock various cosmetic rewards.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	Other upcoming content revealed in the community update today includes a Perks rework to make them "more satisfying and engaging," more finisher animations, a trade-up function for Master-Crafted and Artificer Armoury Data to Relic, an even higher difficulty level above Lethal, and a cross-play toggle to prevent PC players from matching with console players.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Saber has not given exact release dates for any of these features and changes hitting the game, but the studio did say that it currently plans to ship at least one content update every two months in 2025. Going by that schedule, considering the last <em>Space Marien 2</em> update <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/space-marine-2-update-adds-new-mission-parry-rework-dlss-and-fsr-frame-gen-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">landed in early December</a>, we may see 6.0 arrive in early February.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It was back in October 2024 on stage at Comic Con that Sony suddenly announced that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/marvels-spider-man-2-announced-for-pc-lands-in-january-2025/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Marvel’s Spider-Man 2</em> is coming to PC</a>. While this port of the PlayStation 5 exclusive from 2023 is landing tomorrow on the new platform, the company has been oddly quiet about details about this version. Finally though, a blog post <a href="https://blog.playstation.com/2025/01/29/marvels-spider-man-2-pc-features-and-ray-tracing-options-detailed-out-tomorrow/" rel="external nofollow">has landed</a> with detailed system requirements, its raytracing upgrades, and information about exclusive features on the platform.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Ray-traced reflections quickly catch your eye in the skyscraper-filled city of Marvel’s New York as you swing along its many glass surfaces," describes Nixxes' communications manager Julian Huijbregts. "Meanwhile, we’re offering ray-traced interiors, shadows, and ambient occlusion options that add an additional layer of believability with realistic shadows and increased depth to the game."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those with "Super Hero-tier" PC rigs, the game also offers an increased raytracing geometry detail setting and a raytracing object range slider, alongside support for NVIDIA DLSS Ray Reconstruction for those with supported hardware.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are the wide range of hardware requirements the studio detailed today:

	Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 lands on PC tomorrow, January 30. As pre-orders were never offered, Sony is bundling the pre-order bonuses, seen above, with all regular purchases instead. As announced a few hours ago, a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/sony-waves-white-flag-psn-accounts-are-becoming-optional-again-on-playstation-pc-games/" rel="external nofollow">PSN account is optional for playing </a><em><a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/sony-waves-white-flag-psn-accounts-are-becoming-optional-again-on-playstation-pc-games/" rel="external nofollow">Spider-Man 2</a> </em>on PC. Moreover, Peter Parker’s Advanced Suit 2.0 is coming to <em>Marvel Rivals</em> today as a purchasable cosmetic option.

	Microsoft has announced that it will be bringing “<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/what-is-npu-vs-gpu" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/what-is-npu-vs-gpu" rel="external nofollow">NPU</a>-optimized” versions of the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="/deepseek" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/deepseek" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/deepseek" rel="external nofollow">DeepSeek</a>-R1 AI model to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/-microsoft-copilot-plus-faq" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/-microsoft-copilot-plus-faq" rel="external nofollow">Copilot+ PCs</a> soon, first with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-snapdragon-x-elite" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-snapdragon-x-elite" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon X</a> devices, followed by <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/intel/intel-tech-tour-taipei-2024-lunar-lake-impressions" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/intel/intel-tech-tour-taipei-2024-lunar-lake-impressions" rel="external nofollow">Intel Lunar Lake</a> and AMD Ryzen AI 9 processors. The first release will be DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B, and will be available via the Microsoft AI Toolkit for developers. 7B and 14B variants will arrive later.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>"These optimized models let developers build and deploy AI-powered applications that run efficiently on-device, taking full advantage of the powerful NPUs in Copilot+ PCs”</em> says a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsdeveloper/2025/01/29/running-distilled-deepseek-r1-models-locally-on-copilot-pcs-powered-by-windows-copilot-runtime/" href="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsdeveloper/2025/01/29/running-distilled-deepseek-r1-models-locally-on-copilot-pcs-powered-by-windows-copilot-runtime/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft blog post</a> announcing DeepSeek R1 support. <em>“With our work on Phi Silica, we were able to harness highly efficient inferencing – delivering very competitive time to first token and throughput rates, while minimally impacting battery life and consumption of PC resources … Additionally, we take advantage of Windows Copilot Runtime (WCR) to scale across the diverse Windows ecosystem with ONNX QDQ format.”</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the blog post, Microsoft highlights how it worked to ensure the R1 models could run locally on NPU-based hardware. <em>“First, we leverage a sliding window design that unlocks super-fast time to first token and long context support despite not having dynamic tensor support in the hardware stack. Second, we use the 4-bit </em><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/quarot-outlier-free-4-bit-inference-in-rotated-llms/" href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/quarot-outlier-free-4-bit-inference-in-rotated-llms/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow"><em>QuaRot</em></a><em> quantization scheme to truly take advantage of low bit processing.”</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft says the 1.5B Distilled R1 model will be available soon, and that it will be accessible via the AI Toolkit extension in VS Code. Developers can use Playground to experiment with DeepSeek R1 locally on compatible Copilot+ PCs. In addition to supporting DeepSeek R1 locally, Microsoft is also <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/?p=38333" href="https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/?p=38333" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">making these AI models available in the cloud via Azure AI Foundry.</a> <em>“As part of Azure AI Foundry, DeepSeek R1 is accessible on a trusted, scalable, and enterprise-ready platform, enabling businesses to seamlessly integrate advanced AI while meeting SLAs, security, and responsible AI commitments—all backed by Microsoft’s reliability and innovation.”</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has moved fast to support DeepSeek R1, even as <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/deepseek-ai-reportedly-outperforms-llamas-next-version-throwing-meta-into-panic-mode" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/deepseek-ai-reportedly-outperforms-llamas-next-version-throwing-meta-into-panic-mode" rel="external nofollow">US tech firms panic</a> over its existence. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/openai-accuses-deepseek-of-using-data-without-permission-fails-to-see-irony" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/openai-accuses-deepseek-of-using-data-without-permission-fails-to-see-irony" rel="external nofollow">OpenAI now claims that DeepSeek has stolen proprietary code</a> to develop their AI model, which <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/deepseek-outperforms-openais-reasoning-model-at-just-3-percent-of-the-cost-after-president-trumps-usd500-billion-stargate-ai-initiative-all-i-know-is-we-keep-pushing-forward-to-make-open-source-agi-a-reality-for-everyone" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/deepseek-outperforms-openais-reasoning-model-at-just-3-percent-of-the-cost-after-president-trumps-usd500-billion-stargate-ai-initiative-all-i-know-is-we-keep-pushing-forward-to-make-open-source-agi-a-reality-for-everyone" rel="external nofollow">cost less than $10 million to develop</a>. <h3>
	Reviews show that Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 is less than 15% faster than RTX 4080 Super. Making it the worst performance uplift in xx80 graphics cards in years.
</h3>

<p>
	Earlier this month, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/nvidia-announces-rtx-5090-other-rtx-5000-gpus-with-dlss-4-claims-rtx-5070-beats-rtx-4090/" title="Nvidia Announces RTX 5090 &amp; Other RTX 5000 GPUs With DLSS 4, Claims RTX 5070 Beats RTX 4090" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia announced</a> GeForce <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/nvidia-announces-rtx-5090-other-rtx-5000-gpus-with-dlss-4-claims-rtx-5070-beats-rtx-4090/" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5090</a>, RTX 5080 &amp; RTX 5070 graphics cards.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While RTX 5090 reviews were out a few days ago, we didn’t cover it. It was around 30% faster, has around 30% more cores, uses 30% more power and costs around 30% more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So when we looked at the specs of RTX 5080, we asked ourselves whether Nvidia even made any major changes in it. As it had only minor increase in specs over the RTX 4080 Super.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So why we call it the worst xx80 range Nvidia graphics card in years. For a simple reason. Let’s check generation upon generation uplift in performance of previous xx80 range graphics cards:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
	<li>
		GTX 680 → GTX 780: 21%
	</li>
	<li>
		GTX 780 → GTX 980: 24%
	</li>
	<li>
		GTX 980 → GTX 1080: 40%
	</li>
	<li>
		GTX 1080 → RTX 2080: 31%
	</li>
	<li>
		RTX 2080 → RTX 3080: 40%
	</li>
	<li>
		RTX 3080 → RTX 4080: 33%
	</li>
	<li>
		RTX 4080 → RTX 5080: 12%
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These numbers are taken from all the TechPowerUP reviews. All percentages are at 4K, except GTX 680 to GTX 780, which was done at 1600p.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As one can see. In a whole decade, we cannot find a single Nvidia xx80 graphics card which offers less than 20% improvement in performance at 4K. Except the new GDDR7 memory, RTX 5080 doesn’t offer much increase in performance.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It does have the new DLSS 4 multi frame generation, which so far is exclusive to the RTX 50 series, but it has its own issues and that’s about it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The RTX 5080 is a massive disappointment of a graphics card. Forget about beating RTX 4090, it hardly beats RTX 4080 Super.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In fact, <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://x.com/VideoCardz/status/1884614721510269285" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="VideoCardz even jokingly said">VideoCardz even jokingly said</a> it needs to be unlaunched. Just like how the original RTX 4080 was unlaunched due to public backlash.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It seems to have been made only to make RTX 5090 look so that people buy the expensive model instead.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Those who want to switch from RTX 30 can buy RTX 5080, but those who have RTX 40 have gotten no reason to upgrade to it. What’s worse is that there are hardly any RTX 5080 which are going to be available at MSRP at launch.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We feel Nvidia might be making Super series for RTX 50 series soon, with 3GB VRAM chips instead of 2GB ones currently used.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Both Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are launching on 30th January. We doubt many would be interested in RTX 5080 though.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Hello Games is continuing its mission to keep improving <em>No Man's Sky</em>. It was in July of last year that the studio <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-first-part-of-the-no-mans-sky-worlds-update-includes-major-graphical-upgrades-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">shipped its Worlds update to the masses</a>, offering a major graphical upgrade to the planets players can visit in the sci-fi universe. Back then, the studio promised a second installment to that update, and it's finally here.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Worlds Part II update is revamping the universe by adding billions of more star systems for players to discover, making sure that any explored and player-customized planets remain untouched. Players will now be able to find water worlds, gas giants, ancient ruins-covered planets, and many more variants in their exploration runs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

	Planets with oceans will also house deep sea elements now, letting players dive much deeper than before to explore the ocean floors for their secrets and yet-to-be-discovered creatures. New biomes like dense jungles, fresh environmental hazards, increased flora minerals, curios diversity, and more are here now, too.

<p>
	The studio is also touting improved lighting effects, dynamic water that reacts to moving objects, a new terrain system that can spawn massive mountains to climb, better modding support, 4X faster loading times, and so much <a href="https://www.nomanssky.com/worlds-part-ii-update/" rel="external nofollow">more in the patch notes</a>. Hello Games says these improvements come thanks to its work on <em>Light No Fire</em>, its next big fantasy project that's still in development.

	It has not been a great time to be an Nvidia investor or an Nvidia fan this past week or so. The company's share price saw the biggest dip after DeepSeek's success <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/sam-altman-promises-agi-and-beyond-in-response-to-deepseek-nvidia-responds-too/" rel="external nofollow">prompting a response</a>, and the RTX 5090 reviews also saw mediocre gains even though synthetic benchmarks showed <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-5090-apparently-shows-huge-performance-boost-vs-4090-in-3dmark-benchmarks-but-hold-on/" rel="external nofollow">very good improvements</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It was interesting seeing Nvidia itself cooling down the initial (over)hype it created after it admitted that the RTX 5070 was nowhere close to the RTX 4090 <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-admits-rtx-5070-nowhere-near-4090-performance-without-dlss-fake-frames/" rel="external nofollow">without the help of DLSS 4 "fake" frames</a>. The company probably realized that the 50-series is probably its weakest in a long time in terms of actual generational uplift.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And if you thought the RTX 5090 was disappointing, an early review of the RTX 5080 suggests that the disappointing launch run of Nvidia's new cards is going to continue.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	igor'sLAB mistakenly published the review of the RTX 5080 early and the new 80-class Nvidia GeForce card is showing very little improvement compared to the RTX 4080 SUPER. The 5080 was found to be just 8.3% faster on average across 11 games compared to the 4080 SUPER variant and against the 4080, the difference could be around 12-15%.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In terms of AMD competition, the RTX 5080 is 8.4% faster than the 7900 XTX and 27.4% better than the XT.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="rtx 5080 early review leak" class="ipsImage" height="428" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/01/1738151828_5080_review_leak_source_igorslab.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Thus even the $999 5080 is failing to beat the 4090 proving again that Nvidia hyped the 5000 series a bit too much.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The test was at 1440p though which means the numbers at 4K will likely be better seeing how the 5090 too is doing much better at 4K compared to at 1440p. These are early drivers and so there is potentially a driver overhead issue currently hurting these GPUs unless it is an architectural flaw that Nvidia can't quite make up with software fixes alone.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to TechPowerUp data, this suggests one of the poorest generational uplifts from Nvidia in a very long time starting from Maxwell (900 series GPUs).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<p>
			980 -&gt; 1080 = 51%
		</p>
	</li>
	<li>
		<p>
			1080 -&gt; 2080 = 39%
		</p>
	</li>
	<li>
		<p>
			2080 -&gt; 3080 = 63%
		</p>
	</li>
	<li>
		<p>
			3080 -&gt; 4080 = 49%
		</p>
	</li>
	<li>
		<p>
			4080 -&gt; 5080 = 7-9%
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>
	Power draw is also not a winning factor this time as igor'sLAB reported a 4.3% increased consumption (289.7 watts) on the RTX 5080 vs the 4080 SUPER.

	DeepSeek continues to<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/hugging-face-wants-to-make-deepseek-r1-fully-open-by-filling-closed-source-gaps/" rel="external nofollow"> disrupt the U.S. markets</a> and companies as a new competitor in the AI space and the U.S. is probably not too happy. There have been concerns about data and privacy, especially since DeepSeek claims that it trained its AI models on far fewer resources compared to others. According to a report from Bloomberg, Microsoft and OpenAI are currently investigating whether DeepSeek has improperly accessed OpenAI's data.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft's security researchers detected unusual activity in late 2024 where developer accounts, believed to be linked to DeepSeek, were exfiltrating large amounts of data through OpenAI's API. Although developers can use the OpenAI API to integrate its models into their own applications, distilling the outputs is a violation of OpenAI's usage policies.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	President Donald Trump's artificial intelligence czar, David Sacks, said in <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/wake-up-call-us-leader-ai-says-white-house-ai-crypto-czar" rel="external nofollow">an interview with Fox News</a>, that there's substantial evidence that DeepSeek learned the output of OpenAI's models to help develop its own technology cheaply.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		"..there's a technique in AI called distillation when one model learns from another model effectively. What happens is that the student models asks the parent model a lot of questions, just like a human would learn, but AIs can ask millions of questions and essentially mimic the reasoning process that they learn from the parent model.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		There’s substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled knowledge out of OpenAI models and I don’t think OpenAI is very happy about this.”
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	OpenAI also provided a statement to Fox News based on Sack's allegations:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		"We know PRC based companies—and others—are constantly trying to distill the models of leading US AI companies. As the leading builder of AI, we engage in countermeasures to protect our IP, including a careful process for which frontier capabilities to include in released models, and believe as we go forward that it is critically important that we are working closely with the U.S. government to best protect the most capable models from efforts by adversaries and competitors to take US technology."
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Sam Altman had <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/sam-altman-promises-agi-and-beyond-in-response-to-deepseek-nvidia-responds-too/" rel="external nofollow">earlier responded</a> to DeepSeek's launch of its R1 reasoning model by calling it "impressive" and that he is welcoming the competition.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At a Florida retreat, President Trump told House Republicans that the release of DeepSeek should be a "wake-up call" for U.S. companies (via CBS News on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yeBSViPK74" rel="external nofollow">YouTube</a>).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		"Today and over the last couple of days, I've been reading about China and some of the companies in China, one in particular coming up with a faster method of AI and a much less expensive method. That's good because you don't have to spend as much money. I view that as a positive, as an asset.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Hopefully, the release of DeepSeek AI from a Chinese company should be a wake-up call for our industries that we need to be laser-focused on competing to win,"
	</p>

	In a groundbreaking development, researchers at the University of Southampton have unveiled an innovative 5D memory crystal capable of <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/12/05/tape-storage-technology-managing-archival-integrity-and-data-recovery-challenges/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">storing</a> up to 360 terabytes (TB) of data for nearly 14 billion years. This piece of technology, dubbed the "Superman memory crystal," offers unprecedented potential for long-term data preservation, particularly when compared to traditional storage formats that degrade over time.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The 5D memory crystal utilizes a unique method to encode data by employing two optical dimensions and three spatial coordinates, allowing it to inscribe information within nanostructured voids in fused quartz. This advanced technique not only contributes to its impressive storage capacity but also ensures durability against extreme conditions, including temperatures reaching up to 1000°C and significant impact forces.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the most intriguing applications of this technology involves the preservation of <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/10/09/23andme-data-breach/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">genetic</a> information. Scientists propose that using 5D memory crystals to archive genetic data could potentially enable the future revival of extinct species—a concept that intersects with ongoing advancements in synthetic biology. Although not currently feasible, the possibility of synthesizing life forms from stored genomic information presents exciting avenues for future research.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The crystals are meticulously stored in the Memory of Mankind archive, located within a salt cave in Hallstatt, Austria, designed to <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/07/29/safeguarding-your-memories-tackling-video-file-corruption/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">safeguard</a> human history and knowledge for generations to come. Annotated with universal elements and DNA bases, these crystals contain clear instructions for interpreting the data inscribed within, providing insights into humanity's genetic blueprint.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the specialist skills and advanced equipment required for inscribing and reading from these memory crystals mean that direct applications could remain limited for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, as Professor Peter Kazansky, the lead researcher, notes, the potential for constructing an everlasting repository of genomic information could revolutionize our approach to understanding and perhaps even resurrecting complex organisms someday.

	Microsoft's CEO says AI developments from China should be taken very seriously amid the DeepSeek AI frenzy.
</h3>

<p>
	The hype building around Chinese AI startup <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/deepseek" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/deepseek" rel="external nofollow">DeepSeek</a> has raised concern among key tech industry stakeholders, and for good reason. On Monday, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/meta-ai-lead-scientist-claims-open-source-is-the-secret-ingredient-to-deepseeks-triumph" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/meta-ai-lead-scientist-claims-open-source-is-the-secret-ingredient-to-deepseeks-triumph" rel="external nofollow">DeepSeek became the most downloaded free AI app in the US</a>, dethroning <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/chatgpt" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/chatgpt" rel="external nofollow">OpenAI's ChatGPT</a>. Similarly, Microsoft, Meta, and NVIDIA's stock prices plummeted. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/deepseeks-ultra-cost-effective-ai-plummets-nvidia-stock-prices-wiping-out-usd500-billion-in-market-valuation" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/deepseeks-ultra-cost-effective-ai-plummets-nvidia-stock-prices-wiping-out-usd500-billion-in-market-valuation" rel="external nofollow">The chipmaker lost approximately $500 billion in market valuation</a>, making it the third-most valuable company in the world, behind Microsoft and Apple.

	Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently weighed in on DeepSeek's ultra-cost-effective AI phenomenon while comparing it to the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox" href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Jevons paradox</a> economic concept. “Jevons paradox strikes again!” <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://x.com/satyanadella/status/1883753899255046301" href="https://x.com/satyanadella/status/1883753899255046301" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Nadella indicated on X</a>. “As AI gets more efficient and accessible, we will see its use skyrocket, turning it into a commodity we just can’t get enough of.”

		<p>
			Interestingly, DeepSeek's AI gives proprietary models from sought-after companies, including Meta’s Llama 3.1, OpenAI’s GPT-4o, and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.5 a run for their money at a fraction of their development cost. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/meta-ai-lead-scientist-claims-open-source-is-the-secret-ingredient-to-deepseeks-triumph" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/meta-ai-lead-scientist-claims-open-source-is-the-secret-ingredient-to-deepseeks-triumph" rel="external nofollow">The tool outperforms the proprietary AI tools across many benchmarks</a>, surpassing their advanced capabilities and reasoning across math, science, and coding.

			DeepSeek's AI is open-source, allowing anyone to study and replicate its development. Several leaders have claimed the Chinese startup is ironically keeping <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/elon-musk-sues-openai-and-ceo-sam-altman-for-stark-betrayal-of-the-founding-agreement-and-opting-to-go-the-for-profit-way" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/elon-musk-sues-openai-and-ceo-sam-altman-for-stark-betrayal-of-the-founding-agreement-and-opting-to-go-the-for-profit-way" rel="external nofollow">OpenAI's seemingly abandoned founding mission</a> alive, potentially explaining its immense success and broad adoption.

It's unclear how long the registration cap will last, but the company will likely lift it after addressing rising safety and security concerns. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed concerns about the company's preference for closed-source AI models, indicating they provide an easier way to hit the safety threshold.

	DeepSeek sees unprecedented success at the moment which is attracting the attention of everyone whether it is <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/deepseek-outage-and-performance-issues-keep-hitting-hard-as-users-flock-from-chatgpt/" rel="external nofollow">AI enthusiasts, cyberattackers</a>, or <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/historic-wipeout-for-nvidia-shares-as-deepseeks-popularity-surges-on/" rel="external nofollow">stock market traders</a>. The company is quickly becoming <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/china-based-ai-chatbot-deepseek-is-the-top-free-app-on-us-app-store-overtakes-chatgpt/" rel="external nofollow">everyone's favorite app</a> replacing the likes of ChatGPT, naturally leading to loads of traffic, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/deepseek-outage-and-performance-issues-keep-hitting-hard-as-users-flock-from-chatgpt/" rel="external nofollow">performance slowdowns and other issues</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With all the buzz surrounding DeepSeek, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has now responded to DeepSeek R1 calling it "impressive" and is welcoming the competition. Altman expects nothing short of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) "and beyond". On his official X handle, he <a href="https://x.com/sama/status/1884066340509729074" rel="external nofollow">wrote</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		deepseek's r1 is an impressive model, particularly around what they're able to deliver for the price. we will obviously deliver much better models and also it's legit invigorating to have a new competitor! we will pull up some releases.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		but mostly we are excited to continue to execute on our research roadmap and believe more compute is more important now than ever before to succeed at our mission. the world is going to want to use a LOT of ai, and really be quite amazed by the next gen models coming.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		look forward to bringing you all AGI and beyond.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Curiously, just about a week ago, Altman cooled down the AGI hype stating that it was still far off and that OpenAI was not going to "deploy AGI next month" and that it was not even "built" yet. Hence either AGI is still a long-term vision for the company or it is possible that the CEO of OpenAI did not want to give away too many details about its AGI project. He <a href="https://x.com/sama/status/1881258443669172470" rel="external nofollow">stated</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		twitter hype is out of control again.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		we are not gonna deploy AGI next month, nor have we built it.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		we have some very cool stuff for you but pls chill and cut your expectations 100x!
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Meanwhile, Nvidia has also responded to DeepSeek's success and this is particularly important given that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/historic-wipeout-for-nvidia-shares-as-deepseeks-popularity-surges-on/" rel="external nofollow">more than $450 billion</a> got wiped off its market value yesterday. In an email statement to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/27/nvidia-calls-chinas-deepseek-r1-model-an-excellent-ai-advancement.html" rel="external nofollow">CNBC</a>, an Nvidia spokesperson said:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		DeepSeek is an excellent AI advancement and a perfect example of Test Time Scaling. DeepSeek’s work illustrates how new models can be created using that technique, leveraging widely-available models and compute that is fully export control compliant.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Inference requires significant numbers of NVIDIA GPUs and high-performance networking. We now have three scaling laws: pre-training and post-training, which continue, and new test-time scaling.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Thus it looks like certain breeds of Nvidia GPUs were indeed used to power DeepSeek's software which should be good news for the hardware company as well as its investors. This should also be of some relief to Nvidia's competitors in the hardware space like AMD.
</p>

	The first STALKER 2 update of 2025 is a small, but important one.
</h3>

<p>
	Those exploring the dangers, wonders, and mysteries of The Zone will be happy to hear that STALKER 2 — GSC Game World's popular open-world survival shooter on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC — has been updated with Patch 1.1.4. The new update is the studio's first of 2025, and includes several different fixes for major issues that were still impacting the game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By far, the most critical fix included in the patch is a solution for a bug that was causing save files to disappear on the Xbox version of the game, leading to many players losing several hours of progress. Stalkers have been consistently reporting occurrences of this glitch for many weeks now, so it's great to finally see it addressed properly. Once you download the update, you shouldn't have to worry about this issue anymore if you're using one of Microsoft's consoles to play.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Additionally, GSC Game World has also rectified several performance issues, including a bug that was causing crashes and freezes during shader compilation, a memory leak in the Rostok zone of the map, a glitch that was leading to performance degradation after aiming or shooting weapons on very long playthroughs, and crashes caused by UI animations. Overall, the patch was a small one, but even so, the fixes included were major. Notably, the section below lists the full patch notes.

		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			"A fight with the Shader Compilation was among the hardest for all of us in recent days," reads a post made about the update. "Please, if your particular shader compilation issue is still present — let us know via our Tech Support Hub (<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://support.stalker2.com/hc" href="https://support.stalker2.com/hc" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">linked here</a>). This is also the best place to report other bugs and 'anomalies' that are not supposed to be in the Zone."
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			On social media, GSC Game World also <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://x.com/stalker_thegame/status/1883909745146229108" href="https://x.com/stalker_thegame/status/1883909745146229108" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">indicated</a> that a larger, more substantial update for STALKER 2 is on the way soon, and that more patches are coming as well: "This update is the first of the year, and we will be releasing another major update for the game very soon. ... We will continue to work on STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl and will soon be ready to share other updates with you."
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The developer hasn't yet shared any details about what's coming in that larger update, but since it's confirmed it's working on STALKER 2's PvP multiplayer, it could be the patch that introduces it to the shooter. Ultimately, though, we won't know for sure until the studio has more to share publicly.

<p>
	If you ever think age is just a number and you're still young at heart, the Apple iPad has turned 15 years old today (just saying!). Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs unveiled the company's first tablet device on January 27, 2010, and it was launched in April of the same year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Jobs <a href="http://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/apple-announces-ipad/id275834665?i=1000080469507" rel="external nofollow">told the audience</a> that Apple had already established itself in the mobile devices business, beating Samsung and Nokia in the revenue game. The iPhone had been around for three years, and Apple's laptops had evolved into mature devices, from the PowerBook in 1991 to the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While the iPhone found a place in the customer's pocket and the MacBook on their desk, Jobs explained that Apple felt a void existed for a device category offering more convenience and a better experience than the iPhone and MacBook at certain things. For tasks like web browsing, sending emails, browsing photos, ebooks, and watching videos.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before,” the CEO <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2010/01/27Apple-Launches-iPad/" rel="external nofollow">said</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-ipad-announced/" rel="external nofollow">original iPad featured</a> a 9.7-inch LED backlight display with multi-touch support and 10-hour battery backup. It allowed users to interact with content on a touchscreen several times bigger than the iPhone, something a Mac couldn't. Users could rotate the iPad's user interface in any direction, and the device was thinner and lighter than laptops and netbooks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Priced at $499, one of the selling points of the first-generation iPad was that it supported over 140,000 apps available for iPhone and iPod Touch on the App Store back then. Apple also tried to make it a lucrative option for business users by introducing the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/iwork-for-ipad-announced/" rel="external nofollow">iWork for iPad</a> suite.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	iPad eventually evolved into a more potent device and an alternative to Mac and iPhone as it hit several milestones. Apple <a href="https://www.neowin.net/admin/news/published/99063/" rel="external nofollow">released the iPad mini</a> as the first sub-series of the tablet lineup in 2012, featuring internal specifications similar to the iPad 2 but with a small hardware footprint.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple unwrapped its flagship tablet models under the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-finally-unveils-its-new-ipad-pro-with-a-physical-keyboard-and-an-apple-pencil/" rel="external nofollow">"iPad Pro" branding in 2015</a>. The company has since used iPad Pro to deliver its top-of-the-line tablet hardware specs. For instance, features like Apple Pencil, USB-C support, Face ID, ProMotion Display, LIDAR scanner, quad-speaker setup, and OLED display debuted on the iPad Pro before reaching the cheaper models.
</p>

<p>
	iPad's original design featured a chassis with rounded corners, while its screen remained rectangular for several years. However, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-new-ipad-pros-in-11--and-129-inch-sizes-face-id-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">it was in 2018</a> that Apple introduced the third-generation iPad Pro with an all-screen design and rounded corners to claim more screen real estate.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	From 0.5 inches in 2010, Apple reduced the iPad's thickness to just 5.1mm (0.2 inches approx.) on the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/fyi-the-2024-ipad-air-weighs-more-than-the-2024-ipad-pro/" rel="external nofollow">M4 iPad Pro in 2024</a>, calling it the "thinnest Apple product ever."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Apple initially intended to create an entertainment device to bridge the gap, it has transformed the iPad lineup into something that can do much more. Its initial groundwork includes forking the iOS operating system <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-introduces-ipados-bringing-better-multitasking-and-file-management-to-the-ipad/" rel="external nofollow">to create iPadOS</a>, offering several tablet-focused features tailored to differentiate the iPad and leverage its bigger screen.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Stage Manager running on iPad Pro connected to a Mac display" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2022/06/1655002034_apple-wwdc22-ipados16-external-displays-220606_big.jpg.large.jpg">
	<figcaption>
		<em>Stage Manager on iPadOS</em>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	Apple added file management and improved multitasking on the iPad by bringing features such as Split View, Side View, Centre Window, and Stage Manager. It also configured Safari on iPadOS to prefer desktop versions of websites by default and introduced Sidecar, which doubles up the iPad as an extended screen for Mac computers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It started fitting the desktop-class M-series Apple Silicon chips in the iPad Pro lineup to make them more powerful. Apple's advanced video editing software Final Cut Pro 2 for iPad allows users to shoot and edit videos <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-launches-final-cut-camera-app-for-iphone-and-ipad/" rel="external nofollow">with a wireless multi-camera setup</a>.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Apple Final Cut Pro 2 for iPad Live Multicam" class="ipsImage" height="479" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/01/1738000730_apple_final_cut_pro_2_for_ipad_live_multicam.jpg">
	<figcaption>
		<em>Live Multicam on iPad Pro</em>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	While the first-generation iPad offered a keyboard dock accessory, Apple has tried to match the desktop experience by launching the Magic Keyboard for iPad with trackpad and backlight. The Cupertino giant even ran ads <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/five-reasons-ipad-pro-cannot-be-your-next-computer/" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">trying to convince users</a> why the iPad Pro could be their next computer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple added <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ipados-13-finally-offers-mouse-support-to-ipads/" rel="external nofollow">support for mice </a>and other peripherals over the years. However, the hot topic of whether an iPad can replace a desktop computer remains debatable. On a side note, one survey suggests <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-customers-use-their-iphone-more-than-ipad-says-report/" rel="external nofollow">users prefer iPhone over iPad</a> in many cases, and iPad struggles to attract eyeballs even in cases where it's considered the go-to device.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple has highlighted the iPad's productivity benefits, pro apps, and multitasking capabilities. But there are times when Apple's dreams of projecting the iPad as a "do it all" device fall flat, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/iapologize-6-times-apple-said-sorry-to-the-public/" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">forcing Apple to apologize</a>. Let's see how the iPad's development unfolds in the upcoming years.

					Downloads for the app exploded shortly after <a href="https://github.com/deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-R1" rel="external nofollow">DeepSeek released its new R1 reasoning model</a> on January 20th, which is designed for solving complex problems and reportedly <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/12/24242439/openai-o1-model-reasoning-strawberry-chatgpt" rel="external nofollow">performs as well as OpenAI’s o1</a> on certain benchmarks. DeepSeek also claims to have needed only about 2,000 specialized chips from Nvidia to train V3, compared to the 16,000 or more required to train leading models, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/23/technology/deepseek-china-ai-chips.html" rel="external nofollow">the <em>New York Times</em></a>. These unverified claims are leading developers and investors to question the compute-intensive approach favored by the world’s leading AI companies. And if true, it means that DeepSeek engineers had to get creative in the face of <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/12/3/24311929/china-us-export-chipmaking-components-sanctions" rel="external nofollow">trade restrictions</a> meant to ensure US domination of AI.

	Ubisoft is the latest games publisher to go through with a massive layoffs wave. The company today announced that 185 employees are being affected by its latest job cuts in its studios, which this time are centered around its studios based in Europe. One of its support studios is being shut down completely as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, and Ubisoft Reflections are the trio of studios being affected by this wave of "targeted restructurings," according to the company.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritise projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site," said a Ubisoft spokesperson to <a href="https://www.eurogamer.net/ubisoft-announces-studio-closure-as-it-lays-off-185-staff" rel="external nofollow">Eurogamer</a>, confirming the layoffs. "Unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ubisoft Düsseldorf is most known for its development of <em>Anno </em>and <em>Settlers </em>city building and strategy franchises. The studio is currently developing <em>Anno 117</em> alongside the Blue Byte collective with a 2025 launch window. It's unclear how the layoffs will affect these release plans.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, Ubisoft Stockholm has been responsible for the classic <em>Driver </em>series. Lastly, Ubisoft Stockholm is primarily a support studio that has lent its experience to many of Ubisoft's major releases, including <em>Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As for the closed studio, Ubisoft Leamington was the company behind the <em>DJ Hero</em> series when it was known as FreeStyleGames under Activision prior to being acquired by Ubisoft in 2017. The British studio has provided support for many recent AAA Ubisoft titles, including <em>Star Wars Outlaws, Far Cry 5, </em>and <em>Skull and Bones.</em>

</p>

<p>
	PC players jumping into the <em>Harry Potter</em>-universe set action game <em>Hogwarts Legacy</em> will soon be able to customize their experience to a whole new level. Publisher Warner Bros. Games and developer Avalanche Software today announced that official modding support is soon coming to the game alongside tools to make them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The update carrying the built-in mods browser will land on January 30, offering Steam and Epic Games Store players an easy way to add or remove anything that catches their eye.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new 'Hogwarts Legacy Creator Kit' is what players will be using to customize current assets and add new content to the title. This package will be made available via the Epic Games Store for anyone to download. The tools will let players customize characters with new cosmetics and skins, develop new quests and dungeons, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The studio is partnering with CurseForge to act as the game's repository of mods and addons. Created mods can be shared with others by publishing them publicly via CurseForge, which will curate everything that's coming in before it's shown off in the in-game browser. Head here to <a href="https://rewards.wbgames.com/games/hogwarts-legacy/link-account/curseforge" rel="external nofollow">link the accounts</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Avalanche Software has already worked with some modders to create addons for the game, letting players test out what's possible with the tools right at launch. This includes expanded character creation, broom replacement mods (even including a vacuum cleaner), and even a brand-new dungeon, among other additions.

<p>
	<em>Hogwarts Legacy's</em> modding update goes live on January 30 for PC players across Steam and Epic Games Store. No information about a console release for mods has been announced just yet. This may not be the only content update hitting <em>Hogwarts Legacy</em> in 2025 either, as a leak from last year said that the studio is also working on a new <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/hogwarts-legacy-definitive-edition-reportedly-in-the-works-with-10-15-hours-of-new-content/" rel="external nofollow">Definitive Edition with 10-15 hours</a> of new content.

		Here we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And of course, you may find a word or two about older but still supported versions.

As such, Microsoft is ramping up its rollout to all eligible users, including Windows 10 users with compatible PCs. Therefore, if you are on Windows 10, get ready for a message in Windows Update suggesting you leave Windows 10 behind and join the ranks of Windows 11 users.

<p>
	Even though Windows 10 will soon be out of support, Microsoft is still adding new features here and here. The recently released Release Preview build <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/taskbar-calendar-in-windows-10-is-getting-a-cute-little-feature/" rel="external nofollow">introduced cute little images for the calendar flyout</a>, plus a weather widget for the agenda view. While it looks neat, it is hard to tell what is going on, considering how lame is Windows 11's calendar flyout.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another Windows 10 story from this week is about a newly found bug in the latest Patch Tuesday updates. However, Microsoft said, plain and simple, that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-acknowledges-a-bug-in-the-latest-windows-10-updates-says-not-to-worry-about-it/" rel="external nofollow">users should not worry about it</a> because it does not impact the performance, functionality, security, or stability of the operating system, and a future update will resolve the problem with a System Guard Runtime Monitor broker throwing errors in the event log.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 11 users now have a new Game Bar widget that makes it easier to browse the web when playing games. Edge Game Assist is now available in Edge Stable outside the Edge Insider and Windows Insider programs. You can learn <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-game-bar-browser-is-now-available-to-everyone/" rel="external nofollow">how to turn on Edge Game Assist here</a>.

</figure>

<p>
	Finally, Microsoft reminded users that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-windows-wsus-driver-updates-sync-will-stop-working-in-less-than-three-months/" rel="external nofollow">Windows WSUS driver updates sync will stop working</a> in less than three months.

<p>
	The new Windows 11 preview builds brought some interesting changes this week, such as the new battery indicator in the Dev Channel and more. However, users discovered additional improvements, such as a new way to share files in File Explorer. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-is-getting-a-quirky-new-way-to-share-files/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft is testing a new tray</a> that will let you share files with apps by simply dragging them.

You can no longer right-click words to get their definitions, synonyms, and other information.

	Chrome 133 is coming next month, and one of its features is <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-chrome-133-will-come-with-a-cool-new-energy-saving-feature-in-february/" rel="external nofollow">a new battery-saving tool</a>. Google revealed that the new freezing mechanism will help users squeeze more battery life out of their laptops and tablets when running in energy-saving mode. Chrome is going to achieve that by freezing CPU-intensive background tabs.

<p>
	Mozilla has released <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-134-gets-another-update-with-fixes-for-non-working-links-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">another small update for Firefox 134</a>. Version 134.0.2 arrived with fixes for several issues and bugs. Mozilla's engineers resolved problems with crash reports not showing for some locales, non-working anchored HTML links, bugs with developer tools and extension debugging, and more.

<p>

	We also have some hardware updates coming later this spring. After a bit underwhelming season in <em>Forza Horizon 5, </em>which only brought one new car to the game, Playground Games announced the next, and likely the final <em>Forza Horizon 5 </em>update. "Midnight Muscle" is coming next week, and it is adding a bunch of new cars, game intros from the previous <em>Forza Horizon </em>installments, and other big changes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First off, we have a new feature that lets you have a trip down the memory line and select what cinematic plays when you launch the game. Playground Games will soon let you pick between the following intros or let the game decide for you with a random option:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Welcome To Mexico (Standard)
	</li>
	<li>
		Welcome to Colorado (<em>Forza Horizon</em>)
	</li>
	<li>
		Welcome to Europe (<em>Forza Horizon 2</em>)
	</li>
	<li>
		Welcome to Australia (<em>Forza Horizon 3</em>)
	</li>
	<li>
		Welcome to the UK (<em>Forza Horizon 4</em>)
	</li>
	<li>
		Italian Automotive
	</li>
	<li>
		Horizon Retrowave
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The next big change in <em>Forza Horizon 5</em> is Festival Playlist Voting. Starting with January 30, 2025, players will get to vote for the next playlist from the previous updates. This will let gamers earn exclusive cards from earlier playlists, participate in missed challenges, visit interesting landmarks, and more. At the same time, this change likely indicates no more new content for the game, even though Playground Games says, "there is still more content coming to <em>Forza Horizon 5.</em>"
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first Playlist Vote will offer you the option to pick between <a href="https://forza.net/news/forza-horizon-5-high-performance" rel="external nofollow">High Performance</a> and <a href="https://forza.net/news/forza-horizon-5-italian-automotive" rel="external nofollow">Italian Automotive</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As for new cars in the next updates, players will be able to earn the 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock, an 807 horsepower muscle car with a 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine and a widebody kit. Also, the update will bring the 1995 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R, another muscle car with a 5.8-liter V8 and 300 horsepower.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are the release notes for the upcoming <em>Forza Horizon 5 </em>update:

	After a 10-year break, BioWare finally delivered a new Dragon Age to fans last year, offering a brand-new role-playing experience set in the fantasy universe. BioWare has already confirmed that <em>Dragon Age: The Veilguard</em> won't be receiving any more post-launch content, but now it looks like even regular updates are coming to an end.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Patch 5 for the RPG just landed, bringing a single new quality-of-life change as well as a pretty big list of bug fixes. Alongside it, though, BioWare <a href="https://www.ea.com/en-gb/games/dragon-age/dragon-age-the-veilguard/news/patch-5-release-notes" rel="external nofollow">made a statement</a> thanking players for spending time with the game and the following updates. It adds that the company is now moving to monitoring the game's health, which many fans are taking as a farewell.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here's the full message:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		Thank you all for playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard; we were so happy with the game’s stability at launch and hope you have enjoyed our Quality of Life patches since then. With the game being in a stable place, we are moving to monitor for any game-breaking bugs should those occur. Dareth shiral!

	Nvidia last dropped Game Ready driver support for older GPUs in 2021.
</h3>

<p>
	Nvidia is launching the first volley of RTX 50-series GPUs based on its new Blackwell architecture, starting with the RTX 5090 and working downward from there. The company also appears to be winding down support for a few of its older GPU architectures, according to these <a href="https://docs.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-toolkit-release-notes/index.html" rel="external nofollow">CUDA release notes</a> spotted by <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpu-drivers/nvidia-starts-phasing-out-maxwell-pascal-and-volta-gpus-geforce-driver-support-status-unclear" rel="external nofollow">Tom's Hardware</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The release notes say that CUDA support for the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta GPU architectures "is considered feature-complete and will be frozen in an upcoming release." While all of these architectures—which collectively cover GeForce GPUs from the old GTX 700 series all the way up through 2016's GTX 1000 series, plus a couple of Quadro and Titan workstation cards—are still currently supported by Nvidia's December Game Ready driver package, the end of new CUDA feature support suggests that these GPUs will eventually be dropped from these driver packages soon.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's common for Nvidia and AMD to drop support for another batch of architectures all at once every few years; Nvidia last dropped support for older cards <a href="https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-drops-kepler-windows-7-8-8.1-support/" rel="external nofollow">in 2021</a>, and AMD dropped support for several prominent GPUs <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/11/amd-pulls-back-on-drivers-for-aging-but-popular-graphics-cards-and-igpus/" rel="external nofollow">in 2023</a>. Both companies maintain a separate driver branch for some of their older cards but releases usually only happen every few months, and they focus on security updates, not on providing new features or performance optimizations for new games.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Maxwell and Pascal architectures powered a few graphics cards that used to be a big deal. Those include the Maxwell-based <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-750-ti-review,3750.html" rel="external nofollow">GeForce GTX 750 Ti</a>, which was widely praised for keeping pace with AMD cards that used twice as much energy, and the Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1060, which was the single most popular graphics card model in the Steam Hardware Survey <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/12/after-more-than-5-years-nvidias-gtx-1060-is-no-longer-steams-most-used-gpu/" rel="external nofollow">for over five years</a>. (As of this writing, the GTX 1060 still occupies the no. 12 spot, above any GPU of any model or vintage from AMD or Intel.)
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We've asked Nvidia if it has anything to share about its plans for these older GPUs, and will update if we receive a response.
</p>
