	Where did the ROPs go?
</h3>

<p>
	<a href="/news/617416/nvidia-rtx-5090-missing-rop-check" rel="">It’s true</a>: Nvidia has just confirmed it shipped some RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and even some RTX 5070 Ti graphics chips that were missing render units, as <a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/332884/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-spotted-with-missing-rops-performance-loss-confirmed-multiple-vendors-affected" rel="external nofollow"><em>TechPowerUp</em> originally reported</a> — and that you’ll be able to get a replacement if your card was affected.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Nvidia GeForce global PR director Ben Berraondo tells <em>The Verge</em>:
</p>

<p class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<em>We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D and 5070 Ti GPUs which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. The production anomaly has been corrected.</em>
</p>

<p>
	In the grand scheme of things, that doesn’t sound like a lot of affected GPUs, particularly because there <a href="/news/603863/nvidia-rtx-5090-out-of-stock-paper-launch" rel="">weren’t a lot of 5090s on shelves to begin with</a>, nor was it a huge hit to performance — as those who discovered the missing render units <a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/332884/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-spotted-with-missing-rops-performance-loss-confirmed-multiple-vendors-affected" rel="external nofollow">can already attest</a>. But it is the latest in a line of annoyances with Nvidia’s latest pricy cards, including <a href="/news/605231/rtx-5090-5080-driver-issues-uk-delay-japan-raffle" rel="">launch driver issues</a> (including some ongoing black screen issues <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-confirms-it-is-investigating-rtx-50-series-bsod-and-black-screen-troubles-no-timeline-for-a-fix" rel="external nofollow">that Nvidia is still investigating</a>) and some <a href="/news/609207/nvidia-rtx-5090-power-connector-melting-burning-issues" rel="">melting power connectors</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While limited, the manufacturing issue affected multiple Nvidia graphics card partners: reports came in <a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/332884/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-spotted-with-missing-rops-performance-loss-confirmed-multiple-vendors-affected" rel="external nofollow">of Zotac</a>, <a href="https://x.com/9550pro/status/1892939362629030233" rel="external nofollow">MSI</a>, <a href="https://cdn.rios.hu/dl/upc/2025-02/21/499547_bm0jh37xqmttp6ka_nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-spotted-with-missing-rops.jpg" rel="external nofollow">Gigabyte</a>, <a href="https://x.com/9550pro/status/1892940297228759430" rel="external nofollow">Manli</a>, and even <a href="https://x.com/harukaze5719/status/1892959114809974947" rel="external nofollow">an Nvidia Founders Edition card</a> with missing ROPs. You can use<a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/" rel="external nofollow"> GPU-Z</a> to check your card and see if it’s showing the proper number of 176 ROPs; if fewer, you should probably get it replaced.

	NVIDIA's new 50-series "Blackwell" cards lack 32-bit PhysX support. Does it really matter? Here's what you need to know.
</h3>

<p>
	NVIDIA dropping 32-bit PhysX support in its new <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-rtx-5000-everything-you-need-to-know" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-rtx-5000-everything-you-need-to-know" rel="external nofollow">RTX 50-series GPUs</a> is a hot topic in some corners of the internet, and I'm seeing lots of people pile on to express their dismay at the company's decision to abandon a piece of what makes PC gaming so attractive: backward compatibility.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I don't disagree. The move by NVIDIA, taken at face value, seems like a slight to those who spent huge on the new hardware only to find that it's missing a piece that's prevalent in NVIDIA RTX 40-series (and older) GPUs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It seems like NVIDIA came out of nowhere with the decision, and indeed it wasn't exactly expressed in a major way. An <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5615/" href="https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5615/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">NVIDIA support thread</a> last updated on January 17, 2025, seems to be the official announcement, and it's been quoted to reply to users providing negative feedback regarding 32-bit PhysX support on the NVIDIA forums.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I'm not a fan of how NVIDIA handled the situation, but ultimately, it's not as big of a deal as some are making it out to be.

			PhysX has a long history. It's a technology that's changed hands a few times due to acquisitions; it was originally named NovodeX before being acquired by Ageia in 2004, which was then acquired by NVIDIA in 2008.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			It began as a technology made to run on Physics Processing Units (PPU), but NVIDIA changed it to run instead on its GPUs following the acquisition.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			PhysX's main goal is to simulate physics, including body and cloth dynamics, ragdoll effects, particles, and more. To operate properly, it employs NVIDIA's 32-bit CUDA cores.

				<p>
					NVIDIA's RTX 50-series "Blackwell" GPUs lack 32-bit CUDA support, which is the main issue with 32-bit PhysX support. Aging technologies are quietly retired all the time, and if NVIDIA's RTX 5000 launch had gone smoother, I suspect many wouldn't have made as big of a deal out of the news.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Let's say you got lucky and landed an RTX 50-series GPU before scalpers could get ahold of all the stock. You launch a game that utilizes 32-bit PhysX. Will it run? Absolutely. A lack of 32-bit PhysX support doesn't mean your RTX 50-series GPU won't run the game.
				</p>

							A lack of 32-bit PhysX support doesn't mean your RTX 50-series GPU won't run the game.
						</p>
					</blockquote>
				</figure>

				<p>
					Popular games like <em>Borderlands 2</em> and <em>Batman: Arkham City</em> notably use 32-bit PhysX, and you will absolutely have to disable the feature in the games if you'd rather not see performance fall off.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					When a GPU is incapable of running PhysX, it turns to the CPU. Unfortunately, the CPU isn't meant to handle the task, and performance tanks. This is evident in a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1itxoh7/rtx_5080_vs_980ti_physx/" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1itxoh7/rtx_5080_vs_980ti_physx/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">short video posted by Reddit user PaP3s</a> in which they play Borderlands 2 on an RTX 5080 and a GTX 980 Ti. You can guess which card offers better performance (hint: it's the older one).
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					The good news? You can disable PhysX features in the game and have it run smoothly on an NVIDIA RTX 50-series GPU. Your game won't exactly look and feel the same, but at least it's not completely incompatible.

					I bolded some of the games that I feel like many people still play, myself included. <em>The Witcher 3, thankfully, came with PhysX support designed to run on a CPU instead, so you can still enjoy the PhysX features even if you have an RTX 50-series or AMD GPU.</em>

							AMD Radeon GPU users have been experiencing a lack of PhysX support for years, which leads me to my next point.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Major changes to NVIDIA's CUDA cores in the "Blackwell" era mean it won't reverse its decision (I doubt that's even possible), so you'll have to take matters into your own hands.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							If you really want to keep PhysX around, you can always buy an old (and presumably cheap) NVIDIA GPU and have it run alongside your main RTX 50-series card. It's not an ideal setup, but it's probably the best avenue for those who can't live without certain games with PhysX enabled.

	HP rescinds European support call strategy due to "feedback."
</h3>

<p>
	In an odd approach to trying to improve customer tech support, HP allegedly implemented mandatory, 15-minute wait times for people calling the vendor for help with their computers and printers in certain geographies.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Callers from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, and Italy were met with the forced holding periods, <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2025/02/20/hp_deliberately_adds_15_minutes/" rel="external nofollow">The Register</a> reported on Thursday. The publication cited internal communications it saw from February 18 that reportedly said the wait times aimed to "influence customers to increase their adoption of digital self-solve, as a faster way to address their support question. This involves inserting a message of high call volumes, to expect a delay in connecting to an agent and offering digital self-solve solutions as an alternative.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Even if HP's telephone support center wasn't busy, callers would reportedly hear:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		We are experiencing longer waiting times and we apologize for the inconvenience. The next available representative will be with you in about 15 minutes.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To quickly resolve your issue, please visit our website support.hp.com to check out other support options or find helpful articles and assistant to get a guided help by visiting virtualagent.hpcloud.hp.com.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Callers were then told to “please stay on the line” if they wanted to speak to a representative. The phone system was also set to remind customers of their other support options and to apologize for the long, (HP-induced) wait times upon the fifth, 10th, and 13th minute of the call.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The mandatory support call times have been lifted, per a company statement shared by HP spokesperson Katie Derkits:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		We're always looking for ways to improve our customer service experience. This support offering was intended to provide more digital options with the goal of reducing time to resolve inquiries. We have found that many of our customers were not aware of the digital support options we provide. Based on initial feedback, we know the importance of speaking to live customer service agents in a timely fashion is paramount. As a result, we will continue to prioritize timely access to live phone support to ensure we are delivering an exceptional customer experience.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	HP didn’t immediately clarify when it removed the wait times. Some HP workers were reportedly unhappy with the mandatory hold times, with an anonymous “insider” in HP’s European operations reportedly telling The Register, per its Thursday report: "Many within HP are pretty unhappy [about] the measures being taken and the fact those making decisions don't have to deal with the customers who their decisions impact."
</p>

<h2>
	An ironic approach to support
</h2>

<p>
	Forcing longer wait times is an odd move for a company that has previously tried to market its support capabilities as a reason to buy its hardware.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In 2023, for example, HP released the Dragonfly Pro laptop with a dedicated button for accessing 24/7 HP support. The button was <a href="https://www.tomsguide.com/reviews/hp-dragonfly-pro-review" rel="external nofollow">said to bring</a> access to a chatbot or live person. The service came free with the PC for the first year and then cost $11 per month. Notably, HP released the Dragonfly Pro at a time when laptop makers <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/12/23548891/laptop-services-features-pc-sales-ces-computing" rel="external nofollow">were scrambling for ways to get people to buy laptops</a>, following a drop in sales after the COVID-19 pandemic lift.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	HP also offers 24/7 support, including offering a "dedicated phone number" for other devices, including <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/hp-wants-you-to-pay-up-to-36-month-to-rent-a-printer-that-it-monitors/" rel="external nofollow">printers</a> and networking hardware [<a href="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/HP-support.pdf" rel="external nofollow">PDF</a>].
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.laptopmag.com/news/tech-support-showdown" rel="external nofollow">A 2023 analysis</a> of laptop tech support conducted by Laptop Mag scored HP support highest when accessed <a href="https://www.laptopmag.com/news/hp-tech-support-showdown" rel="external nofollow">via phone</a> (18 points out of a max of 30) or via HP’s support website (12 out of 20 points), with the most helpful aspect there reportedly being <a href="https://clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=362963&amp;a=3382006&amp;epi=laptopmag-us-6750474107401138951&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fh30434.www3.hp.com%2F" rel="external nofollow">HP’s community forum</a>. The publication noted that support calls “went rather well if not a little long in particular areas.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While the quality of HP’s phone support could have changed in the past couple of years, it was questionable for HP to drive people away from one of its better support systems. It’s hard to accept HP’s claims that it implemented longer call wait times because of unawareness around its online support options. It’s likely that many access HP’s website to find HP’s support phone number. As of this writing,<a href="https://support.hp.com/us-en" rel="external nofollow"> HP’s support page</a> offers various forms of online help before offering a way to call HP, which requires entering a device's serial number first.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Like many other firms have, it seems that HP could have benefitted financially from potentially being able to staff fewer customer service phone reps. HP's former support strategy also has us wondering how many other companies' support teams have forced call wait times.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	HP, at least, has apparently learned that extending wait times isn’t a good way to support customers. Although, we can’t guarantee that customers won’t still end up spending longer on the phone than they’d like when calling HP customer service.
</p>

	NVIDIA's DLSS 4 and MFG (Multi-Frame Generation) are a big part of the company's marketing as it tries to make its RTX 50 series, especially the inbound RTX 5070, look better. Multi-Frame Generation now comes in a "4X" variant, which we'll look at today. This image quality comparison evaluates Native vs. DLSS with the Transformer and CNN models, fake frame image quality, and looks at ghosting, artifacts, blurring, and distortion in the various tested games. This follows the launch of the NVIDIA RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti GeForce cards. The next cards are the NVIDIA RTX 5070 and AMD RX 9070 XT and 9070.

	Third-party RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards sold out in seconds, as NVIDIA skipped a Founders Edition but shared its pricing problems.

<p>
	If you plan to build a custom gaming PC, it might be the wrong time to pick up a brand-new graphics card. That is if you want to maximize performance for your investment and target a mid-to-high-end range of graphical fanciness because the category is turgid and soured by rip-off GPUs from NVIDIA's latest RTX 50 Series.
</p>

<p>

	The <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/rtx-5070-ti-where-to-buy" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/rtx-5070-ti-where-to-buy" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">brand-new NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti launched earlier today</a> and predictably sold out within <strong>seconds</strong>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's the same old story for seasoned PC enthusiasts who join virtual queues for online retailers only to be met with a "sold out" message — satirizing what should be an organized retort to scalpers and ends up punishing the authentic consumer. Unfortunately, the farce doesn't end at availability.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	An enchanting $749 MSRP (manufacturer's <strong>suggested</strong> retail price) feels optimistic when you discover that NVIDIA is skipping its in-house "Founders Edition" and exclusively licensing out third-party RTX 5070 Ti GPUs to its manufacturing partners like MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Still, looking at listings for RTX 5070 Ti cards from one of these OEMs exposes one consistent theme that blights potential consumers:
</p>

<h2 id="it-is-impossible-to-buy-the-rtx-5070-ti-at-msrp-3">

<p>
	Wait, RTX 5070 Ti variants are selling for $250 over MSRP?
</p>

<p>

	Yes, they <strong>were</strong> in a literal sense, but as we saw during the , storefronts may have only stocked units counted in single digits. It only takes one person to buy an overpriced variant to wipe the listing out, whether they intend to flip it on eBay or attempt to sustain 60 FPS on the latest game built on the stutter-prone Unreal Engine 5.

					Naturally, a GPU priced in such a low bracket was never intended to compete with NVIDIA's RTX 5070 Ti, and even Intel's latest B Series (Battlemage) cards still target more of a low-to-middle-range bracket at <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/intel-just-announced-its-battlemage-gpus-and-i-cant-decide-if-im-more-excited-about-the-performance-or-prices" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/intel-just-announced-its-battlemage-gpus-and-i-cant-decide-if-im-more-excited-about-the-performance-or-prices" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">$249 with the Arc B580</a>.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Nevertheless, despite a relatively low adoption (so far,) Intel seems determined to keep the Arc desktop GPU team hard at work, as <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.techradar.com/computing/gpu/intels-rumored-celestial-gpus-could-finally-give-nvidia-and-amd-cause-for-concern" href="https://www.techradar.com/computing/gpu/intels-rumored-celestial-gpus-could-finally-give-nvidia-and-amd-cause-for-concern" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">rumors of its C Series (Celestial) cards leak</a> (via Tech Radar) around the web and hint at an adoption of its new Xe3P architecture that <strong>could </strong>supercharge its in-house rendering tech and hint at mid-to-high-end GPUs.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					It's optimistic, but having real-life experience of running an Arc A750 for over a year for 1080p gaming after several quality-of-life updates to Intel's drivers, I'm a big advocate for discrete Arc GPUs to become a worthy third option with more attractive prices.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Until then, it was <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5080-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5080-review" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">hard to recommend NVIDIA's RTX 5080</a> to anyone if they weren't upgrading from a much older high-end 20 Series or mid-range 30 Series card, and the RTX 5070 Ti is an even harder sell with its busted pricing.

	Google is planning to expand its physical retail stores outside the US, and the company could pick India as the new playground, according to a Reuters report. Three unnamed sources said that Google is in "advanced stages" of picking up New Delhi and Mumbai as the final locations for its stores.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Both Apple and Google sell their devices in India through authorized retailers. It's said that the Mountain View-based company is trying to follow in the footsteps of Apple, which churned tons of money by opening its stores worldwide.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple has over 500 stores globally compared to just five physical Google stores limited to the US, where it sells Pixel phones, watches, earbuds, and more. Google's <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-is-opening-its-first-retail-store-in-new-york-city-this-summer/" rel="external nofollow">first retail store opened</a> on its Chelsea campus in New York City in 2021.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Being one of the largest smartphone markets with around 712 million users and one of Google's key focuses, the company has previously committed to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-to-invest-10-billion-in-india-to-accelerate-digitization/" rel="external nofollow">investing billions of dollars in India</a>. While there is no official timeline for the opening of the stores, one source told the publication that the stores are expected to be around 15,000 square feet and expected to open in around six months.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The source added that Google also considered Bengaluru, which is home to many tech companies, to be one of the potential cities. It wants to compete with Apple "especially to target the luxury segment" and will add more locations if the first stores do well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple iPhone became the premium segment leader as the device's <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-iphone-crosses-900-global-average-selling-price-says-report/" rel="external nofollow">global average selling price crossed $900</a> for the first time. Moreover, Apple scored almost half of the global smartphone revenue <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-iphone-captures-50-of-global-smartphone-revenue-says-report/" rel="external nofollow">in recent years</a>. It was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/report-finds-more-people-are-buying-premium-smartphones-these-days/" rel="external nofollow">also reported</a> that the market share of premium smartphones reached over 25%, contributing to the premiumization trend.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another source told the publication that Google is firm on its plans to open physical stores. However, there are some standard regulatory and compliance processes to clear before setting up the stores.
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apples-first-retail-store-in-india-to-open-tomorrow-in-bkc-mumbai/" rel="external nofollow">Mumbai</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/india-gets-its-second-apple-store-in-a-single-week-has-launched-today/" rel="external nofollow">New Delhi</a> could become tech battlegrounds as Apple opened two retail stores in these cities in 2023. Apple CEO Tim Cook was present at both locations to inaugurate the company-run stores and was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-fan-surprises-tim-cook-with-a-vintage-mactinosh-watch-his-reaction/" rel="external nofollow">surprised by a fan</a>.

	NVIDIA's RTX 5070 Ti arrives on February 20, but how does the RTX 5070 Ti compare against its siblings at MSRP?
</h3>

<p>
	NVIDIA's RTX 5070 Ti graphics card launches on February 20 at 9 AM EST, and it's expected to involve similar stock shortages and high prices that I saw with the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/live/news/where-to-buy-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-rtx-5080" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/live/news/where-to-buy-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-rtx-5080" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch</a> just a few weeks ago.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	NVIDIA isn't releasing a Founders Edition for the RTX 5070 Ti. Instead, it's all up to NVIDIA's hardware partners to release custom versions, which vary in price and performance. So far, I've seen listings from ASUS, Gainward, Gigabyte, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac at US and UK retailers, and there should be more options coming down the line in the future.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I'm warning you now: the RTX 5070 Ti launch is likely to be just as rocky as the launch of its more powerful siblings, with most cards selling out nearly instantly. I've put together this guide to help you find RTX 5070 Ti stock, and I've also taken a look at reviews to see whether or not it's <em>actually</em> worth buying the RTX 5070 Ti at MSRP or beyond.

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The RTX 5070 Ti's $749 MSRP doesn't mean that's what you'll be paying for the new GPU. It's all well and good that NVIDIA set a price for the mid-range card, but it doesn't plan on releasing a Founders Edition at that price.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			In fact, it's not releasing a Founders Edition at all. You'll have to wait for the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/nvidia-rtx-5070-rumored-delay" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/nvidia-rtx-5070-rumored-delay" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5070's delayed March 5 launch</a> for another FE graphics card.

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Instead, third-party builders are supplying the new RTX 5070 Ti GPUs, and they aren't required to stick to the planned MSRP. The cheapest RTX 5070 Ti that I spotted in the US, for example, is the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-google-interstitial="false" data-hl-processed="hawklinks" data-merchant-id="107327" data-merchant-name="Newegg" data-merchant-network="LS" data-merchant-url="newegg.com" data-placeholder-url="https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=kXQk6%2AivFEQ&amp;mid=44583&amp;u1=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newegg.com%2Fglobal%2Fuk-en%2Fmsi-rtx-5070-ti-16g-shadow-3x-oc-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-16gb-gddr7%2Fp%2FN82E16814137935%3F" data-url="https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/msi-rtx-5070-ti-16g-shadow-3x-oc-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-16gb-gddr7/p/N82E16814137935?" href="https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=kXQk6%2AivFEQ&amp;mid=44583&amp;u1=wp-gb-7178110318414905744&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newegg.com%2Fglobal%2Fuk-en%2Fmsi-rtx-5070-ti-16g-shadow-3x-oc-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-16gb-gddr7%2Fp%2FN82E16814137935%3F" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">$750 MSI Shadow listed at Newegg</a>. On the other hand, the most expensive — so far — is the ASUS TUF Gaming OC Edition for <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-google-interstitial="false" data-hl-processed="hawklinks" data-merchant-id="175976" data-merchant-name="Best Buy" data-merchant-network="Generic" data-merchant-url="bestbuy.com" data-placeholder-url="https://shop-links.co/link?skuId=6614743&amp;publisher_slug=future&amp;exclusive=1&amp;u1=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fasus-tuf-gaming-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-oc-edition-16gb-gddr7-pci-express-5-0-graphics-card-black%2F6614743.p%3FskuId%3D6614743&amp;article_name=hawk-article-name&amp;article_url=hawk-article-url" data-url="https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-tuf-gaming-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-oc-edition-16gb-gddr7-pci-express-5-0-graphics-card-black/6614743.p?skuId=6614743" href="https://shop-links.co/link?skuId=6614743&amp;publisher_slug=future&amp;exclusive=1&amp;u1=wp-gb-1322086284049070708&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fasus-tuf-gaming-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-oc-edition-16gb-gddr7-pci-express-5-0-graphics-card-black%2F6614743.p%3FskuId%3D6614743&amp;article_name=RTX%205070%20Ti%3A%20Should%20you%20buy%20NVIDIA's%20latest%20GPU%3F%20Benchmarks%2C%20reviews%2C%20and%20the%20best%20places%20to%20shop.&amp;article_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.windowscentral.com%2Fhardware%2Fcpu-gpu-components%2Frtx-5070-ti-where-to-buy" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">about $1,000 at Best Buy</a>. Considering ASUS TUF Gaming is usually one of the cheaper brands, it doesn't look good for heavy hitters like the ASUS ROG Strix.

			The NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti review embargo was lifted on February 19, a day ahead of the official launch. Opinions seem to vary quite a bit. We, unfortunately, didn't receive our own RTX 5070 Ti to test as we did for our <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5080-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5080-review" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5080 review</a> and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-review" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5090 review</a>, but there are plenty of opinions to check out around the web.

		</p>

		<p>
			Due to the lack of a Founders Edition card — which is usually what's sent out for initial reviews — our friends at Tom's Hardware and PC Gamer each reviewed different versions of the RTX 5070 Ti. I'll start with these (mostly) positive reviews before getting into some of the more critical impressions.

			In PC Gamer's case, it's noted that 20% should be deducted from the score if MSI's Ventus 3X version of the 5070 Ti costs more than $900. That would drop the review score to 66%. Not great.

			Gamers Nexus, my go-to for honest and critical PC hardware video reviews, dives deeper into the RTX 5070 Ti's pricing issues in its review. The video, titled "Do Not Buy: NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti GPU Absurdity," should give you an idea of GN Editor-in-Chief Steve Burke's opinion of the ASUS Prime RTX 5070 Ti he reviewed.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The full review is worth watching for the in-depth testing results and explanations, but I pulled this snippet from near the start of the video:
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			<em>"The TL;DW upfront is that the 5080 is about 12% to 16% better than this [RTX 5070 Ti] in some of the 4K gaming scenarios we tested. The 5070 Ti is about 28% to 35% ahead, at best, of the 4070 Ti, again in those 4K scenarios. But it comes down into the 20% to 28% range when you're at 1440p. Additionally, the lead over the 4070 Ti Super — which is really the one that's easy to lose track of, but is important because it's the closest sort of price analog from the most recent generation — is only 7.8% to 20% in a lot of 4K situations but were commonly 12% to 16%. And the worst case one we saw was an impressively bad 3.9% better for the 5070 Ti versus the 4070 Ti Super. So, again, based on the pricing we're expecting for launch and also kind of just the MSRP, we don't think you should buy this video card."</em>

			Hardware Unboxed is another excellent source for hardware video reviews, and it has its own RTX 5070 Ti review to check out. </p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			<em>"If sold at the $750 US MSRP, the 5070 Ti would be a reasonable buy, at least in the current market. [...] When compared to the 4070 Ti Super at 4K, the 5070 Ti is on average 11% faster, with margins seen as high as 24% in our testing, though margins of 20% or larger were quite rare as that 11% average would suggest. [...] Typically speaking, the 5070 Ti is going to end up less than 15% faster than the 4070 Ti Super."</em>

				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Whether or not you should buy — or, in this case, <em>attempt </em>to buy — the RTX 5070 Ti ultimately comes down to what sort of hardware you're currently using in your PC.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Judging by the reviews and benchmark results, you can expect minimal performance gains compared to the RTX 4070 Ti Super (which had an $800 MSRP when it launched) and roughly 15% worse performance compared to the RTX 5080.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Considering I'm already seeing RTX 5070 Ti launch prices that match (or exceed) the RTX 5080's MSRP, the wide-angle market view isn't looking too good. That, of course, ignores the fact that it's nigh impossible to find an RTX 5080 at MSRP.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					With that in mind, I don't suggest you buy an RTX 5070 Ti if you already have one of the upper-mid-range RTX 40-series GPUs, like the RTX 4070 Ti or the RTX 4070 Ti Super. Needless to say, if you're the owner of an RTX 4080 or RTX 4090, you should be very happy to hold onto the hardware you already have in your PC.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					If, however, you're coming from an RTX 30-series (or older) GPU, the performance gains are going to be a lot more pronounced. I'm still working with an AMD Radeon RX 6800, and it's about time it's replaced with something newer. I just don't know if the RTX 5070 Ti is the right choice with its inflated pricing.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					My opinion on the matter is echoed in the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-review-asus" href="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-review-asus" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Tom's Hardware RTX 5070 Ti review</a>:
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					<em>"So, who is Nvidia targeting with the RTX 5070 Ti? People with an RTX 3070 to 3080 (or lower) GPU who want to upgrade will find plenty to like. It will be about 50% faster in raw performance, and the new features can make it feel like more of a step up than that. At least there are no glaring flaws with the product other than concerns with availability and the possibility of scalpers spoiling the party. But if you already have an RTX 40-series GPU, you should give this generation a pass until something truly compelling comes out."</em>
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Furthermore, the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMPK1SeMEZM" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMPK1SeMEZM" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Hardware Unboxed RTX 5070 Ti video review</a> also contains similar advice:
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					<em>"For those of you still using an older GPU such as the RTX 3070, for example, the 5070 Ti is offering on average 103% greater performance at 1440p and 155% greater performance at 4K. So, a massive upgrade there, though the MSRP has increased by 50% (or rather 22% if we adjust for inflation). You're also getting twice as much VRAM, which is a big one, given the RTX 3070's 8GB buffer is regularly run over these days."</em>

						<p>
							It's also important to keep in mind that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/5-ways-amd-bungle-rdna-4-launch" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/5-ways-amd-bungle-rdna-4-launch" rel="external nofollow">AMD is about to officially reveal its RDNA 4 Radeon 9000-series GPUs on February 28</a>. AMD's new cards were delayed for weeks, assumed, at least in part, due to letting NVIDIA reveal its new hardware before setting expectations and prices, but they're now expected to launch in early March following the reveal.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Following NVIDIA's CES 2025 presentation, I was <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/nvidia-rtx-5070-or-amd-rx-9070-xt-next-pc" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/nvidia-rtx-5070-or-amd-rx-9070-xt-next-pc" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">sure that the RTX 5070 would be my next GPU</a>. However, as more information leaked out from AMD's side, the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT — which were rebranded to better compare to NVIDIA's RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti — have become a lot more tempting.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							AMD could still screw this up by setting prices too high for the performance and features on offer, but it's great to see some much-needed competition for NVIDIA arriving soon. If you don't manage to land an RTX 5070 Ti on launch day or in the days and weeks following, AMD's new RDNA 4 GPUs could be an enticing alternative.

									NVIDIA has confirmed a delay for its RTX 5070, which was originally expected to launch alongside its RTX 5070 Ti sibling. NVIDIA is having a hard time with RTX 5000 availability, so it makes sense to delay the launch and allow retailers to build up more stock. This review of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti graphics card benchmarks the performance of the new GPU, particularly with the 5070 Ti vs. the 5080, 4080 Super, 4070 Ti Super, AMD RX 7900 XTX, and similar cards. Benchmarking includes gaming performance tests of the best video cards in 2025, some revisits of older cards like the RTX 3070 and GTX 1070, and power consumption and efficiency tests. The GPU market is in an era of absurdity now, reminiscent of 2020. Price means nothing.

	The "secret" ability to see important objects on the compass is simply switched off by default, but why?

The only problem? Those hands are cuffed.

</p>

<p>
	At least from our perspective here at Windows Central. We recently discovered a tiny little setting buried at the bottom of the UI settings: a togglable switch that would have been useful <em>50 hours ago! </em>Did you know you can turn on <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/avowed-all-totem-fragment-locations-totem-of-rightful-rulership-totem-of-defiance-totem-of-revelations-and-totem-of-perseverance" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/avowed-all-totem-fragment-locations-totem-of-rightful-rulership-totem-of-defiance-totem-of-revelations-and-totem-of-perseverance" rel="external nofollow">Totem</a> Discovery? <em>NEITHER DID WE!</em>

			I love Avowed, don't get me wrong. It's been absolutely incredible. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/avowed-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/avowed-review" rel="external nofollow">We love it</a>; the I<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/avowed-review-scores-metacritic-roundup" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/avowed-review-scores-metacritic-roundup" rel="external nofollow">nternet loves it</a>. But in the name of Wael, I have no idea why they decided to have it disabled to start. I feel like they're intentionally sabotaging the player here. What other reason is there to turn it off?
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Did you want us to forcefully backtrack all over the map, looking in every nook and cranny for a little extra power, <em>you </em><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/avowed-preview-nov-2024" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/avowed-preview-nov-2024" rel="external nofollow"><em>Xaurip</em></a><em>-headed buffoons?</em>

		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Keep in mind that it took me well over 25 hours to clear the first area, and that doesn't include collecting Totems. That's just where I cut it off after being satisfied with my time spent in the zone. I'm not even technically finished.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Now I feel <em>betrayed</em>. The time I spent in the area could have been more efficient had I seen this single setting in the menu. Should I have taken the time to read through the UI settings menu? When a member of our team pointed out the menu setting to everyone in our group chat, we flew off the wand handle over it as we spent hours scouring the maps together in search of the Totems. Microsoft's new chip creates a path to "solving some of the world’s most difficult problems," according to the tech giant.
</h3>

<p>
	A newly announced chip from Microsoft could solve unsolvable problems, revolutionize quantum computing, and solve real-world problems that cannot be solved by the combined forces of every computer in the world combined. Those are bold claims, so you may think they're about a concept device or a look-ahead into what could be in a decade. But that's not the case. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://news.microsoft.com/source/features/ai/microsofts-majorana-1-chip-carves-new-path-for-quantum-computing/" href="https://news.microsoft.com/source/features/ai/microsofts-majorana-1-chip-carves-new-path-for-quantum-computing/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft announced</a> a new chip called the Majorana 1 processor.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The processor paves the way to make a quantum computer in the near future, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. "We believe this breakthrough will allow us to create a truly meaningful quantum computer not in decades, as some have predicted, but in years," said <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/satyanadella_a-couple-reflections-on-the-quantum-computing-activity-7298008744133595140-a6YV/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAAmZBMB4ZPLFVeakJlucqgeZbv9Gl1WRKU" href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/satyanadella_a-couple-reflections-on-the-quantum-computing-activity-7298008744133595140-a6YV/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAAmZBMB4ZPLFVeakJlucqgeZbv9Gl1WRKU" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Nadella on LinkedIn</a>.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The particles needed for quantum computing do not exist in nature. In fact, they didn't exist at all until quite recently. Microsoft created a new material and architecture for quantum computing. The Majorana particles are key to Microsoft's approach to quantum computing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“It’s one thing to discover a new state of matter,” said Microsoft technical fellow Chetan Nayak. “It’s another to take advantage of it to rethink quantum computing at scale.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That new material is not a solid, liquid, or gas. Instead, it is a new state of matter. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-google-interstitial="false" data-hl-processed="skimlinks" data-merchant-name="SkimLinks - nature.com" data-merchant-network="SkimLinks" data-placeholder-url="https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=23432X820454&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41586-024-08445-2&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.windowscentral.com%2Fsoftware-apps%2Fmicrosoft-created-a-new-state-of-matter-to-revolutionize-quantum-computing" data-url="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08445-2" href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08445-2" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Nature </a>has a newly published paper that explains topological qubits in more depth.

		<p>
			Microsoft's new chip creates a potential path to revolutionize several industries and solve real-world problems that cannot be addressed by current computing methods. The tech giant shared examples such as "breaking down microplastics into harmless byproducts or inventing self-healing materials for construction, manufacturing or healthcare." As you would expect from such a cutting-edge piece of technology, details about it are quite technical and have a lot of jargon. Here are some key terms that should help translate Microsoft's blog post:
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<ul>
			<li>
				<strong>Quantum computer:</strong> A type of device that uses quantum states of matter to store and compute information.
			</li>
			<li>
				<strong>Qubit:</strong> The basic building blocks of quantum computers. They store information where information can be processed.
			</li>
			<li>
				<strong>Topoconductor: </strong>A new type of chip designed to make a path for creating quantum systems that can scale to a million qubits. Microsoft analogizes the topoconductor to the "transistor for the quantum age." It is a semiconductor that also acts as a superconductor.
			</li>
			<li>
				<strong>Topological state:</strong> A new state of matter that is not solid, liquid, or gas. Particles in this state are key to quantum computing.
			</li>
			<li>
				<strong>Majorana 1:</strong> The first Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) that is powered by a topological core.
			</li>
		</ul>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The key here is the million qubit figure Microsoft refers to frequently. That threshold needs to be hit to scale computing to a point at which it can solve real-world problems.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<div id="slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-q4SGscAPv6Z88fhrTnyHb">
			<div data-hydrate="true">
				<p>
					“Whatever you’re doing in the quantum space needs to have a path to a million qubits. If it doesn’t, you’re going to hit a wall before you get to the scale at which you can solve the really important problems that motivate us,” said Nayak. “We have actually worked out a path to a million."
				</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The next major first-party game release from Microsoft is here. Obsidian Entertainment is re-entering its <em>Pillars of Eternity</em> universe for this venture, with it today launching <em>Avowed </em>for Xbox and Windows players. It's not an isometric-perspective RPG this time, though, with the studio opting for first-person and third-person options. Watch the launch trailer for this brand-new fantasy role-playing game above.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Avowed </em>has been available to Premium Edition owners for five days now as a part of its Advanced Access perk, but it is only now officially available for everyone else who has purchased a copy or is an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscriber.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Set in the world of Eora, the RPG takes players to the Living Lands as an envoy from the Aedyr Empire, as a new kind of plague is seemingly affecting the area. While being a fantasy experience, the developer is offering players firearms in addition to magic and melee weaponry, much like in the <em>Pillars of Eternity</em> series. Depending on their skill builds, even dual-wielding can be a valid option, letting players mix and match different types of powers and weaponry at all times.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Avowed" class="ipsImage" height="409" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739897663_avowed_dawnshore_environs_docks-0abc2666416d20cf0011-1900x1080-1-f0498313dc309614b802.jpg">

<p>
	Being an Obsidian-developed game, narrative elements take a huge focus, with player choice being a major factor in how the storyline progresses and the lives of NPCs they meet. While not an open-world experience, <em>Avowed </em>features large zones that players can explore to find secrets, quests, and plenty of foes. This also marks the studio's first major RPG release since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here's how the store page sets the stage for this RPG:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		The Living Lands faces a dire threat—a mysterious plague that defies nature and reason, spreading chaos across its sprawling wilderness.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate, but what begins as a mission of duty soon becomes deeply personal—you feel as though the land recognizes you and is pulling you toward something greater. The choices you make will ripple across the Living Lands, shaping the fates of its people, its creatures, and even yourself. But beware, for every decision carries weight, and the forces you encounter will not hesitate to test your resolve.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The system requirements for PC players are these:

	The 32-bit tech on older games can't bring snazzy effects forward.
</h3>

<p>
	Most PC games that you can play on a modern PC would run faster on an <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/01/geforce-rtx-50-gpus-run-from-1999-to-549-lean-heavily-on-ai-generated-frames/" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia RTX 5080 or 5090</a> than, say, a <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/11/nvidia-gtx-1070-ti-review/" rel="external nofollow">GTX 1070</a>. But some games, from a particular phase of enthusiasm for particles, destructible environments, and smooth-moving hair, will take a notable hit if their owners upgrade to the latest Nvidia cards.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That's because <a href="https://developer.nvidia.com/physx-sdk" rel="external nofollow">PhysX</a>, once a dedicated physics simulation tool and card that became a selling point for Nvidia's gear, has been largely deprecated on Nvidia 50-series cards. The transition was announced in January, but it seems to have taken some time for someone to notice the impact on 32-bit, PhysX-enabled games (<a href="https://www.pcgamesn.com/nvidia/geforce-rtx-50-series-cards-physx-support" rel="external nofollow">as seen by PCGamesN</a>). The most recent of these affected games, <em>Assassin's Creek IV: Black Flag,</em> came out in 2013.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What follows is a brief primer on PhysX: what it was, what it did, and why it's left out of Nvidia's road map.

<h2>
	From Citadel Station to Geralt’s Hair
</h2>

<p>
	Many years ago, if you wanted impressive physics in your game, someone had to build it in code. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seamus_Blackley" rel="external nofollow">Seamus Blackley</a>, who would one day create and design the Xbox, took his graduate-level physics knowledge and <a href="https://www.ttlg.com/articles/SSint2.asp" rel="external nofollow">applied it to <em>System Shock</em></a>, making it the rare game where the player's body had real mass to it and grenades bounced off walls like you might think they would.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These days, game engines like Unity can handle a lot of the physics thinking for developers. But in the years between, there was PhysX. PhysX started as a simulation engine from a Swedish firm, NovodeX, then was acquired by Ageia in 2004 and expanded to include hardware cards.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	PhysX cards held such promise that, at one point, Tim Sweeney—back then, known primarily for <em>Unreal Tournament—</em><a href="https://arstechnica.com/uncategorized/2006/05/6828-2/" rel="external nofollow">considered adding support for a PhysX card</a> for the <em>2007</em> version of his game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2008/02/nvidia-snaps-up-physics-processing-company-ageia/" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia bought Ageia in 2008</a> and got to work incorporating PhysX into its own GPUs. The newly green-hued PhysX showed up as an SDK <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2009/03/nvidia-sony-ink-deal-to-bring-physx-to-the-ps3/" rel="external nofollow">available to all PlayStation 3 developers</a> and made outreach efforts to get developers <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2009/04/ne-nvidia-physx-interview/" rel="external nofollow">thinking about PhysX support from the beginning</a>. It worked, to some extent, with games like <em>Mafia II </em>and <em><a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/11/batman-arkham-city-on-pc-is-the-version-gotham-needs-and-you-deserve/" rel="external nofollow">Batman: Arkham</a><a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/11/batman-arkham-city-on-pc-is-the-version-gotham-needs-and-you-deserve/" rel="external nofollow"> City</a> </em>showing off advanced particles, collision, and other physics effects. You could shoot a wall and leave holes in it, and smoke didn't look so much like a flat sprite trick, but a real thing that took up space.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Nvidia's PhysX offerings to developers didn't always generate warm feelings. As part of its broader GamesWorks package, PhysX was cited as one of the reasons <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/05/amd-says-nvidias-gameworks-completely-sabotaged-witcher-3-performance/" rel="external nofollow"><em>The Witcher 3</em> ran at notably sub-optimal levels</a> at launch. Protagonist Geralt's hair, rendered in PhysX-powered HairWorks, was a burden on some chipsets.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	PhysX started appearing in general game engines, like <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/03/unity-5-game-engine-brings-enhanced-graphic-tools-new-cloud-services/" rel="external nofollow">Unity 5</a>, and was eventually open-sourced, first in <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20181205103131/https://developer.nvidia.com/physx-sdk" rel="external nofollow">limited computer and mobile form</a>, then <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230528035837/https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/open-source-simulation-expands-with-nvidia-physx-5-release/" rel="external nofollow">more broadly</a>. As an application wrapped up in Nvidia's 32-bit CUDA API and platform, the PhysX engine had a built-in shelf life. Now the expiration date is known, and it is conditional on buying into Nvidia's 50-series video cards—whenever they approach reasonable human prices.
</p>

<h2>
	The real dynamic particles were the friends we made…
</h2>

<p>
	<a href="https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5615" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia noted in mid-January</a> that 32-bit applications cannot be developed or debugged on the latest versions of its CUDA toolkit. They will still run on cards before the 50 series. Technically, you could also keep an older card installed on your system for compatibility, which is real dedication to early-2010's-era particle physics.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Technically, a 64-bit game could still support PhysX on Nvidia's newest GPUs, but the heyday of PhysX, as a stand-alone technology switched on in game settings, tended to coincide with the 32-bit computing era.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you load up a 32-bit game now with PhysX enabled (or <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/geforce-graphics-cards/5/557125/rtx-5090-missing-physx-support/" rel="external nofollow">forced in a config file</a>) and a 50-series Nvidia GPU installed, there's a good chance the physics work will be passed to the CPU instead of the GPU, likely <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJGf0-tGaf4" rel="external nofollow">bottlenecking the game and steeply lowering frame rates</a>. Of course, turning off PhysX entirely raised frame rates above even native GPU support levels.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Demanding <em>Borderlands 2</em> keep using PhysX made it so it "runs terrible," <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1irs8xk/comment/mdauwh3/?utm_name=web3xcss" rel="external nofollow">noted one Redditor</a>, even if the dust clouds and flapping cloth strips looked interesting. Other games with PhysX baked in, as listed by ResetEra completists, include <em>Metro 2033, </em><a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/10/assassins-creed-iv-review-enormous-but-ultimately-empty/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag</em></a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(2013_video_game)" rel="external nofollow">the 2013 <em>Star Trek </em>game</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Commenters on Reddit and ResetEra note that many of the games listed had performance issues with PhysX long before Nvidia forced them to either turn off or be loaded onto a CPU. For some games, however, PhysX enabled destructible environments, "dynamic bank notes" and "posters" (in the <em>Arkham</em> games), fluid simulations, and base gameplay physics.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Anyone who works in, or cares about, game preservation has always had their work cut out for them. But it's a particularly tough challenge to see certain aspects of a game's operation lost to the forward march of the CUDA platform, something that's harder to explain than a scratched CD or Windows compatibility.
</p>

	Today, Micron, a popular manufacturer of memory for all sorts of modern computing devices, <a href="https://investors.micron.com/news-releases/news-release-details/micron-redefines-performance-ai-pcs-gamers-and-professionals" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> its first PCIe Gen5-based solid-state drive made for regular consumers. The Micron 4600 is an M2 2280 SSD with four storage configurations: 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Micron says its first consumer PCIe Gen5 SSD doubles the bandwidth of Gen4-based SSDs with operating speeds of up to 14.5GBps sequential read and 12GBps sequential write (compared to the Micron 3500 PCIe Gen4 SSD). Random speed is rated at 2,100,000 IOPS read and write. These performance improvements will benefit storage-intensive workloads, such as running large-language models (LLMs) and other AI-based tasks, which are very popular these days.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides improving upon the previous-gen SSDs, the new model touts up to 11% better performance in the PCMark10 benchmark when compared to existing PCIe Gen5 models.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		The 4600 SSD provides exceptional user experiences over previous Gen4 drives for scientific, media and entertainment, along with a variety of other use cases, as demonstrated with the SPECwpc5 benchmark results on speed improvements:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Media and entertainment applications</strong>: up to 61% faster
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Energy industry applications</strong>: up to 59% faster
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Product development applications</strong>: up to 45% faster
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Life sciences applications</strong>: up to 38% faster
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Besides having much faster random and sequential speeds, the Micron 4600 offers a lower speed-per-watt ratio for better efficiency thanks to the company's G9 TLC NAND memory chips. The drive draws up to 8.5W of power when operating and its peak speeds, plus it is rated for 2 million hours of mean time to failure and 300-1,600TB endurance (TBW).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Micron 4600 PCIe Gen5 SSD is now available for OEM sampling worldwide, which means you can expect to see this drive in high-end computers from various manufacturers powered by AMD's latest Ryzen 9000 processors and Intel's Core Ultra Series 2 desktop and mobile chips.

	Warhorse Studios' second installment of the <em>Kingdom Come</em> saga has now passed another massive sales milestone. The studio today revealed that already two million copies of the game have been sold across all platforms. The medieval Europe-set role-playing experience already celebrated a massive sales landmark on launch day, where it <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kingdom-come-deliverance-2-sells-a-million-copies-a-day-into-launch/" rel="external nofollow">surpassed one million copies</a>, and it doesn't look like the title's popularity is dying down anytime soon.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company announced the new milestone via a <a href="https://x.com/WarhorseStudios/status/1891487776421638643" rel="external nofollow">social media post</a>. "Two million copies in under two weeks! A toast to you all for making [<em>Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2]</em> a triumph," it said, and went on to promise more game updates soon.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The February 4 launch across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 saw massive numbers of players flocking to the RPG. On Steam alone, all-time concurrent players peak currently stands at over 250,000 players, showing just how popular the title is on PC. The studio has not shared sales data between the platforms.

<p>
	Aside from being praised for being a period-authentic RPG with engaging storylines, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's performance across PC and consoles has also been held in high regard. In a recent interview, Warhorse Studios confirmed that the Xbox Series S had helped optimizations for PS5, PS5 Pro, and the Xbox Series X despite being the "weakest of the four" platforms.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Warhorse Studios has major updates and premium expansions planned for the RPG too. This spring, an update will add a barber for further customization of Henry, Hardcore mode for players wanting a more authentic experience, and horse raising. In Summer, Autumn, and Winter of this year, the studio plans to launch one story expansion each to continue Henry's adventures. Read <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kingdom-come-deliverance-2s-post-launch-plans-detailed-includes-three-expansions-in-2025/" rel="external nofollow">more about these plans here</a>.

	Nvidia's RTX 5000 series desktop GPUs have been a disappointment so far. Barring the impressive DLSS 4 feature, the new Blackwell graphics cards from Team Green have not been all that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/forget-the-5070-early-review-benchmarks-show-even-rtx-5080-cant-beat-the-4090/" rel="external nofollow">impressive in terms of performance</a> as Nvidia has failed to replicate the generational uplift it managed in its previous generations like on Maxwell, Pascal, Turing, and Ada Lovelace, despite the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-admits-rtx-5070-nowhere-near-4090-performance-without-dlss-fake-frames/" rel="external nofollow">tall claims from the company in the initial CES presentation</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And performance has not even been the worst aspect of this launch. The <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-tested-rtx-5090-with-four-16-pin-connectors-but-this-specific-bug-may-still-melt-it/" rel="external nofollow">melting and burning power connector fiasco</a> is back with reports from users as well as reviewers who are experiencing issues and problems with the new connector on the power-hungry RTX 5090, at least in the case of third-party cables.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So, while the community can overlook the performance aspects of the 5090 and 5080, especially considering there is no direct AMD competitor this time, the safety concerns are still too high, and that is expected given that early adopters are having to pay extremely high prices well above the MSRPs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the upcoming RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti GPUs will be facing off against AMD's 9070 XT and 9070, and as such, this segment could see some much-needed price wars. Nvidia has already confirmed the availability dates for the 5070 Ti and the 5070. The former will be out in a few days on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-reveals-rtx-5070-ti-launch-date-pushes-rtx-5070-to-march/" rel="external nofollow">February 20 and the latter next month on the 6th</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD's RX 9070 series cards are also arriving around the same time on February 28, and thus, it will be head-on and likely affect the pricing of the Radeon cards, given that we are expecting performance in the same ballpark. Speaking of performance, the 3DMark benchmarks for RTX 5070 Ti have leaked courtesy of <a href="https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-is-16-6-faster-than-rtx-4070-ti-super-in-leaked-3dmark-tests" rel="external nofollow">VideoCardz</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you recall, we already have a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/alleged-9070-xt-performance-benchmark-compared-to-nvidia-4090-4080-4070-ti-amd-7900-xtx/" rel="external nofollow">glimpse of the performance of the alleged 9070 XT</a> from a previous leak, so we compiled the results to see how the 9070 XT and 5070 Ti tallied up.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="nvidia 5070 ti and amd 9070 xt 3dmark scores compared" class="ipsImage" height="427" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739793171_5070_ti_leaked_3dmark_vs_9070_xt_source_sayan_sen_neowin_via_videocardz.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	As you can see in the above chart, the RTX 5070 Ti easily outperforms the supposed 9070 XT in Speed Way, which is a 1440p ray tracing test, though this is expected given how Nvidia is quite a bit ahead of AMD in this department.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, in 4K DirectX 12, rasterization performance measured using Time Spy Extreme, the 5070 Ti is not quite as fast as the 9070 XT. A Steel Nomad comparison would have been more accurate since it is more modern than Time Spy, but unfortunately, we do not yet have 9070 XT leaked scores for Steel Nomad.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Thus, if these figures hold, then AMD would likely have to price the 9070 XT quite a bit lower than the 5070 Ti. The latter is priced at $749, although we know MSRP does not mean much nowadays. Meanwhile, in comparison to the 4070 Ti SUPER, the 5070 Ti is around 16-17% faster.
</p>

<p>
	The February 2025 Patch Tuesday updates are now available for download. On Tuesday, February 11, Microsoft released the latest security patches and fixes for Windows 10 and 11, which are mandatory for all users. If you use Windows 10, you can download <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5051974--kb5052000--kb5049993--kb5050013-february-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5051974</a>, while Windows 11 users can get <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5051987-kb5051989-february-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5051987 and KB5051989</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition to releasing new security updates, Microsoft tweaked the list of supported processors in Windows 11. For some reason, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-windows-11-24h2-official-support-on-8th-9th-10th-gen-intel-cpus/" rel="external nofollow">the company removed certain previously supported chips</a> from Intel and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-finally-shares-windows-11-24h2-official-cpu-support-list-adds-new-amd-ryzen-parts/" rel="external nofollow">added new SKUs from AMD</a>. Also, Microsoft <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-windows-11-feature-responsible-for-collecting-and-storing-location-data/" rel="external nofollow">deprecated the Location History feature</a>, which was responsible for collecting and storing your PC's location data for Cortana and other applications.

<p>
	Microsoft is working on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-finally-making-windows-11s-start-menu-more-convenient/" rel="external nofollow">some much-needed improvements for Windows 11's Start menu</a>. Users discovered new code bits that suggest that Windows 11 will soon let you open the Start menu to the list of all apps by default, eliminating the need to click the "All" button. If you want to keep things as is, there will be a new toggle that will show pinned apps first by default.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you do not want to wait for Microsoft to fix Windows 11's Start menu, you can try out <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/this-simple-mod-is-what-windows-11-start-menu-should-have-been-from-the-very-beginning/" rel="external nofollow">this simple Windhawk mod</a> that will give you a proper Start menu with a convenient layout that is similar to what we had in Windows 10 but with modern visuals. It is highly customizable and looks just right on any Windows 11 installation.

<p>
	There have also been some updates to the list of known bugs in Windows 11 version 24H2. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-explains-how-to-update-to-windows-11-24h2-on-blocked-asus-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft published a workaround</a> for customers with ASUS PCs who could not update their systems to Windows 11 version 24H2. Now, updating BIOS/UEFI will lift the block and let users get to the latest Windows 11 release. There are still several known bugs and issues that Microsoft is working on resolving, so expect more news about that as we move further into 2025.

	Do you remember that fake "How to uninstall Edge" guide from Microsoft? After the media picked it up, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-quietly-removes-its-fake-how-to-uninstall-edge-guide/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft removed the page</a> and replaced it with an actually useful page that highlights various Edge features and offers users the opportunity to learn more about them. Not everything shared on social media attracts positive responses from users. Sometimes, it's something someone said in the comments you don't resonate with, and you find yourself looking for a dislike button that isn't there.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meta-owned Instagram is working to address such situations through a new "dislike" button for comments made on posts and Reels. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri <a href="https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/DGD12NZPjwb" rel="external nofollow">confirmed</a> via his Threads accounts that the company is testing a dislike button for comments <a href="https://www.threads.net/@brock11johnson/post/DGC3660OpKA" rel="external nofollow">following user</a> <a href="https://x.com/Jabs_Tv/status/1890160334545338370" rel="external nofollow">reports</a> that such a thing is on the table.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The existence of the Instagram dislike button was also revealed by the leaker Alessandro Paluzzi <a href="https://x.com/alex193a/status/1880577751566205145" rel="external nofollow">last month</a>. While the button allows users to dislike or downvote a comment, according to Mosseri, it's still a "private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While it's giving users a medium to express their disagreement, Instagram is trying to play it safe by not telling everyone how many dislikes a comment got or who did it. The company hopes the move will make Instagram's comment section "more friendly." However, Instagram will use the data it collects from the dislike button to optimize its comment ranking algorithm.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"I want to be clear: this is a test, there is no dislike count, nor will anyone know if you tap the button. Eventually, we may integrate this signal into comments ranking to move disliked comments lower down," Mosseri said.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meta and Instagram will be far from early movers in this case, as the ability to downvote or dislike content on social media has existed for years. Prime examples include YouTube's dislike buttons for videos and comments and Reddit's downvote button on posts and comments. However, in YouTube's case, the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/editorials/removing-dislike-counts-from-youtube-is-a-terrible-decision-and-should-be-reversed/" rel="external nofollow">dislike count was removed</a> back in 2021.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mosseri didn't share information about when the testing will end, and when the Instagram dislike button will reach a wider audience. Whether the button trickles down to its text-based spin-off Threads remains to be seen.
</p>

	OpenAI's board has rejected the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/elon-musk-bids-974-billion-for-control-of-openai/" rel="external nofollow">$97.4 billion takeover offer by a consortium of investors</a>, led by Elon Musk. Earlier this week, Elon Musk's xAI, Equity Partners, Baron Capital, Atreides Management, Vy Capital, 8VC, and Ari Emanuel, CEO of the Hollywood company Endeavor, submitted a proposal to OpenAI's board of directors to take control of OpenAI's non-profit arm.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	OpenAI's board sent the following letter in response to the takeover offer:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		"Earlier this week, you sent a letter on behalf of a consortium of corporate and financial entities offering to acquire all of the assets of OpenAI, Inc. ("OAI"), and to do so imminently, subject to numerous conditions. Two days ago, you filed a pleading in court adding new material conditions to the proposal. As a result of that filing, it is now apparent that your clients' much- publicized 'bid' is in fact not a bid at all.<br>
		<br>
		In any event, your clients' proposal, even as first presented, is not in the best interests of OAI's mission and is rejected. The decision of the OAI board on this matter is unanimous."
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Apart from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI Nonprofit's board currently includes independent directors Bret Taylor (Chair), Adam D’Angelo, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Zico Kolter, Retired U.S. Army General Paul M. Nakasone, Adebayo Ogunlesi, Nicole Seligman, Fidji Simo, and Larry Summers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	OpenAI board chairman Bret Taylor gave the <a href="https://x.com/openainewsroom/status/1890513865214980162" rel="external nofollow">following statement</a> in response to Elon Musk's takeover offer:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		“OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected Mr. Musk's latest attempt to disrupt his competition. Any potential reorganization of OpenAI will strengthen our nonprofit and its mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity."
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	After Elon Musk and his investor group submitted their takeover bid on Monday, Elon Musk made a court filing saying that he would withdraw the bid if OpenAI's board decided to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/elon-musk-takes-new-legal-route-to-stop-openais-for-profit-transition/" rel="external nofollow">stop the for-profit conversion</a>. This court filing by Musk made it easier for OpenAI's board to reject the takeover offer. It remains to be seen how Musk will respond to this decision.

	Independent investigations into GeForce RTX 12VHPWR and 12V-2x6 power cables surface concerning problems for NVIDIA.

<p>
	Melting cables are, once again, affecting high-end NVIDIA graphics cards, as a small selection of disgruntled <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-review" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition</a> buyers and content creators take to social media to report unreasonably high temperatures radiating from its 600W connector. Noticing a "burning smell" while gaming, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1ilhfk0/rtx_5090fe_molten_12vhpwr/" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1ilhfk0/rtx_5090fe_molten_12vhpwr/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Reddit user "ivan6953" discovered their third-party MODDIY 12VHPWR cable had melted</a> primarily around one of its pins, sparking a concerning sense of deja vu in the PC gaming community.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Back then, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/computers-desktops/nvidia-responds-to-rtx-4090-melting-cable-problems" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/computers-desktops/nvidia-responds-to-rtx-4090-melting-cable-problems" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">the initial response blamed bent cables</a> and insecure hookups, as even the slightest removal from a flush connection could cause issues, and third-party PC power supply brands moved to 12VHPWR cables with colored tips. It helped make it evident to even a novice custom PC builder when the cable was connected correctly, and NVIDIA's internal redesigns supposedly made its new-style 12V-2x6 a safer option.

<h2 id="so-why-are-we-seeing-melted-cables-again-3">
	So, why are we seeing melted cables again?

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	YouTuber and PC enthusiast der8auer has been busy testing NVIDIA's new <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-rtx-5000-everything-you-need-to-know" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/cpu-gpu-components/nvidia-rtx-5000-everything-you-need-to-know" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5000</a> GPUs, as well as investigating the 12VHPWR cable issues associated with the RTX 5090. He originally discovered some abnormalities after connecting a Corsair 12VHPWR cable to his RTX 5090 Founders Edition GPU, and confirmed abnormal loads across cables with a thermal imaging camera.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	He then uploaded the above video a few days ago, in which he analyzes Reddit user ivan6953's actual hardware that melted and was sent to der8auer for testing. One of the cable sockets on the Reddit user's GPU melted, a couple of PSU sockets melted, and the cable took most of the damage, with melted plastic and sleeving on both ends. Most concerning, one of the cables in the bundle took the brunt of the damage, suggesting that the power load was not being distributed evenly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Reddit user was employing a third-party MODDIY cable for their RTX 5090, which a lot of commenters called out quickly as being the problem. However, it's not quite so simple. Der8auer discovered that the 12VHPWR cable simply does not have enough headroom to accommodate the RTX 5090's power draw, resulting in the melted hardware. Der8auer states that "the RTX 4080 is perfect for one of these connectors [12VHPWR]. The 4090 and the 5090 should use two. Then you would have sufficient headroom."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Der8auer ultimately came to the conclusion that the melted cable and hardware were not user error after speaking with ivan6953, who turns out to be an enthusiast with PC knowledge who took care to ensure the cable was plugged in fully each time he used it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

		<p>
			In a more recent follow-up video, der8auer backs up his claims in the original video with further test results. He notes that he's not the only one discovering issues with the 12VHPWR cables, with the problems echoing the same we saw with the RTX 4090.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			He summarizes the issue, stating that "RTX 40 and RTX 50 cards have no way to tell how much current is flowing across which of the pins." That's unlike older NVIDIA and modern AMD GPUs, which can tell how much power is being delivered with each connection. He specifically mentions the RTX 3090 Ti and its three-way split for the 12V power, which allows it to better balance the power load.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Der8auer's conclusion — that the problem ultimately lies with NVIDIA's power setup and the RTX 5090's inability to sense how power is being distributed — makes sense. Unfortunately, there's not really an answer as to how to solve the problem without making NVIDIA change its design.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			I'd love to recommend one cable that won't melt, but at this time it's impossible. Your best bet is to use the highest-quality hardware possible, ensure it's plugged in all the way at all times, and cross your fingers tightly.

	We're a month past into 2025, and the need for a super fast internet connection is more than ever. Internet speed analytics company Ookla has released its updated speed test numbers for January 2025, giving us an idea of the internet performance in various countries at the start of the year.

<p>
	In the case of fixed broadband, the global median download and upload speeds were recorded at 97.61 Mbps and 52.84 Mbps, respectively, combined with a latency of 9ms. Singapore has continued its lead from last year with a median download speed of 336.45 Mbps and an upload speed of 275.30 Mbps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The United Arab Emirates (310.05 Mbps), Hong Kong (305.71 Mbps), France (287.44 Mbps), and Iceland (281.95 Mbps) have also ranked in the top five. Meanwhile, the US remains at the seventh spot with a download speed of 274.16 Mbps.

<p>
	There can be various reasons why we need such blazing-fast internet speeds in 2025. For instance, services like game streaming, cloud processing of AI workloads, and 4K/8K video streaming on platforms like YouTube and Netflix are on the rise.

<p>
	Historical data <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20240224004201/https://www.speedtest.net/global-index" rel="external nofollow">reveals</a> the global median download speed has increased by about 5.7 Mbps since January 2024, when it was recorded at 91.93 Mbps. However, Singapore has shown a more significant rise of about 60 Mbps since January last year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ookla has shared broadband speed test numbers for 152 countries. So, speaking of the tailenders, Syria and Cuba have claimed the bottom two spots with median download speeds of about 3 Mbps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The story is even more surprising in the case of mobile internet, where a global median download speed of 91.24 now stands shoulder to shoulder with fixed broadband. It has early doubled since last year, when the global median download speed was 50 Mbps, as per Ookla's previous data.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken the lead in mobile internet with a median download speed of 545.94 Mbps, compared to 302.38 Mbps in January last year. It's followed by Qatar, Kuwait, China, and Denmark in the top five spots. <span open="" sans="">UAE </span><a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ookla-5g-speed-test-uae-crowned-worlds-fastest-5g-network-in-q2-2023/" rel="external nofollow">has remained</a><span open="" sans=""> in the top spot in recent years, primarily due to the stiff competition between its two major operators, Etisalat by e&amp; and Du.</span>
