	Although Google Home has been getting steady upgrades over the past few years such as <a automate_uuid="115812c3-4bc1-43e9-8ce1-acb0cd505f61" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-google-home-app-gets-video-forwarding-support-and-many-more-features/" rel="external nofollow">video forwarding support</a>, <a automate_uuid="29b8c023-27a7-49d5-b237-ea047737963c" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/googles-upcoming-smart-home-widget-could-put-ai-on-your-home-screen/" rel="external nofollow">new smart home widgets</a>, and <a automate_uuid="372802a0-4e2e-42b3-bdce-f936ef3fd19f" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-upgrades-smart-home-gadgets-with-gemini/" rel="external nofollow">gadget integrations with Gemini</a>, customers aren't really pleased with the product's current state. Recently, Google Home and Nest users banded together to complain about their product experiences on Reddit.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a automate_uuid="72d13762-9dba-4ad2-9d2e-e5a3dc94cc8b" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/1m5ygut/the_enshittification_of_google_home/" rel="external nofollow">A Reddit mega-thread</a> focusing on the enshittification of Google Home cites numerous anecdotes emphasizing the degraded experience of the smart service. Some have cited repeatedly getting errors when asking Gemini in Google Home to do the most basic of tasks. Others have complained about routines like "movie time" that have randomly started recommending local movie times instead of turning off or lowering the brightness of the lights in their room, as the user has configured it to. There are some who have claimed that Google Home proceeds to turn off the room lights instead of turning off the fans like it's been asked to.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The leading theory in the Reddit thread is that this ongoing enshittification of Google Home products is just a part of the company's strategy of planned obsolescence of its existing hardware. They believe that since this degradation began when Google started investing more into AI services, the firm plans to make its current hardware seem worse than the products it plans to reveal next. It's likely that the next Google Home launches will feature more deeply ingrained AI capabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That said, Google Home and Nest's Chief Product Officer Anish Kattukaran has now attempted to allay some of these fears by <a automate_uuid="124dee2e-b7cc-4b87-8a4a-5c3652b6ba81" href="https://x.com/AnishKattukaran/status/1948164062384406814" rel="external nofollow">apologizing for the current product experience on X (formerly Twitter)</a>. The executive has emphasized that Google is actively listening to feedback and that it will improve the reliability of its smart devices as a part of a long-term solution. Kattukaran has also noted that his team is working on "major improvements" that will be announced this fall.

	Links created with Google’s URL shortener will return a 404 error starting August 25th.

<p>
	Google will officially deprecate links generated with its URL shortening tool next month. On August 25th, 2025, all links in the “https://goo.gl/*” format will no longer work and return a 404 error message.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google <a href="/2018/3/31/17184164/google-alphabet-url-shortening-service-closed" rel="">shut down its URL shortener in 2019</a>, citing “changes we’ve seen in how people find content on the internet.” Links created with the tool continued to work since then, but Google <a href="/2024/7/19/24201734/google-url-link-shortening-service-shut-down-support" rel="">announced last year</a> that it would begin deprecating them as traffic to the shortened URLs declined. “In fact more than 99% of them had no activity in the last month,” Google said in its <a href="https://developers.googleblog.com/en/google-url-shortener-links-will-no-longer-be-available/" rel="external nofollow">July 2024 blog post</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At the time, Google also began displaying a warning page when users click on a shortened URL, saying “this link will no longer work in the near future.” With the shutdown of “goo.gl” links just a month away, now would be a good time to transition your URLs to another shortener if you haven’t already.

	Xbox controversially raised the base price of its mainline games to $80 in an announcement a few weeks ago. Now, it seems to be backtracking. Good, I say.
</h3>

<p>
	Three things in life are inevitable: death, taxes, and price increases. Although that last one comes with caveats, for once.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A few weeks ago, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/microsoft-reveals-global-xbox-price-increases-for-consoles-accessories-and-even-games" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/microsoft-reveals-global-xbox-price-increases-for-consoles-accessories-and-even-games" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft announced that the base price of its Xbox games at retail would hit frankly staggering $80</a>, underpinning what has been an incredibly tough year for consumers and businesses alike with regards to spiralling costs. Whether it's supply chains being impacted by arbitrary trade wars or sticky inflation from Covid quantitative easing, the market has been relatively unstable for the past few years for a variety of reasons.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In response, various businesses have put up their prices to varying degrees. Microsoft and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/sony" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/sony" rel="external nofollow">Sony</a> both raised the price of their Xbox and PlayStation hardware bundles over the past couple of years, and for a short while, it looked like the industry was poised to raise the base price of their mainline games to $80. It started with Nintendo's Mario Kart World hitting $79.99 at retail, and then back and forth over whether <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/borderlands-4-just-revealed-its-price-its-not-all-good-news" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/borderlands-4-just-revealed-its-price-its-not-all-good-news" rel="external nofollow">Borderlands 4 would hit $79.99 as well — it ended up being $69.99.</a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Then, Microsoft announced it would also be targeting $79.99 for <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/best-upcoming-xbox-games" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/best-upcoming-xbox-games" rel="external nofollow">upcoming Xbox games</a>, starting with FPS space odyssey <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/5-reasons-why-the-outer-worlds-2-looks-like-the-fallout-new-vegas-sequel-we-never-got" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/5-reasons-why-the-outer-worlds-2-looks-like-the-fallout-new-vegas-sequel-we-never-got" rel="external nofollow">The Outer Worlds 2</a>. That is, until today.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Announced across Xbox social channels, <strong>Microsoft and Obsidian revealed that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/outer-worlds" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/outer-worlds" rel="external nofollow">The Outer Worlds</a> 2 will no longer be $79.99 at launch</strong>, returning to the current industry standard of $69.99.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>"We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,"</em> an Xbox spokesperson explained in a statement to Windows Central.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you've already pre-ordered The Outer Worlds 2 at the $79.99 price point, you will have to grab refunds at the point of purchase if you've already paid up. Microsoft says some retailers will light up with refunds today, but some will start accepting refunds from tomorrow. Then, you can pre-order again at the new $69.99 price tier.

				</p>

				<p>
					As good as The Outer Worlds 2 looks, I think $79.99 would have been a tough pill to swallow for gamers who are already dealing with rising costs elsewhere, who are also increasingly looking to free-to-play games to offset the rising costs of living.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Cynically, it wouldn't be a stretch to think the $79.99 price tag was an attempt to push people over to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-game-pass-list" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-game-pass-list" rel="external nofollow">Xbox Game Pass</a>, which would've represented a significant saving for those wanting to play Obsidian's new sci-fi epic. </p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					In any case, it's a rare win for consumers in a world where everything seems to get perpetually more expensive with no sign of stopping. Part of me wonders if Microsoft did some kind of analysis on what kind of sales impact $79.99 would have on the upcoming <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/call-of-duty-black-ops-7-gamescom-2025" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/call-of-duty-black-ops-7-gamescom-2025" rel="external nofollow">Call of Duty Black Ops 7</a>, and decided they didn't like what they saw ...

	The <em>Battlefield</em> franchise is finally returning, and its first trailer is only a couple of days away. Following months of teasers, <a automate_uuid="b903e44b-142c-4500-a617-42f0e65be063" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ea-unveils-battlefield-labs-a-new-community-testing-initiative-to-perfect-the-next-entry/" rel="external nofollow">closed testing sessions</a>, and leaks, an announcement went out today via official channels that confirmed the highly anticipated game's name will be <em>Battlefield 6 </em>and that the reveal is happening this Thursday, July 24.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is set to be the 13th game in the franchise, arriving four years after the launch of <em>Battlefield 2042</em>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"<em>BATTLEFIELD 6</em>. July 24. Reveal Trailer," said the simple announcement today across <em>Battlefield </em>social media. Attached to it was a simple 2D-animated teaser with four modern-age soldiers (hinting at the return of the class system from the get-go) looking over a massive city going through a battle, with a couple of jets dogfighting across the sky. The YouTube teaser's <a automate_uuid="73e7d210-9c84-4395-b039-e56587c9abe3" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgNCgJG0vnY" rel="external nofollow">description reads</a>, "Prepare for the ultimate all-out warfare experience in <em>Battlefield 6."</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As mentioned before, the game is set to return to the Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon class system from the start, unlike what happened with <em>Battlefield 2046</em>, while all weapons will be freely usable by any class. However, using the designated weapon type for their class (sniper rifles with Recon, for example) will offer some additional gameplay bonuses.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Recent leaks from playtests have revealed that destruction has been massively improved for this entry, while immersive features like dragging teammates away from battle for revives, combat dives, crouch sprint, landing rolls, and other abilities are being implemented too. There are also reports of being able to grab onto moving vehicles while on foot.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While EA has yet to give <em>Battlefield 6 </em>a release date, the company confirmed to investors <a automate_uuid="dc7d90bd-d818-4ef4-b125-e0eb86e0ee44" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ea-wants-to-release-its-next-battlefield-game-before-april-2026/" rel="external nofollow">earlier this year</a> that it plans to launch the massive game during its 2026 fiscal year. This is the 12-month time frame between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026. Going by previous <em>Battlefield </em>releases, an October or November 2025 release date for <em>Battlefield 6 </em>is likely, targeting PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

	In late January 2025, Microsoft announced <a automate_uuid="f6e33ff6-d684-4ed9-8099-823dbb6237de" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reveals-surface-laptop-7-for-business-with-5g-and-core-series-2-chips/" rel="external nofollow">two new Surface computers for business customers</a>: the Surface Laptop and the Surface Pro, both powered by Intel's latest Core Ultra 200 Series processors. Back then, Microsoft promised to release an optional Surface Laptop configuration with 5G connectivity, and today, the company is finally delivering one of the most requested features from business customers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Surface Laptop 5G (that's the name) is now official. This 13.8-inch laptop is the same as its non-cellular siblings, with the only difference being 5G support with Nano SIM and eSIM compatibility. However, as Microsoft says in the announcement post, equipping a laptop with 5G is not just putting a modem inside. Microsoft had to carefully engineer a so-called "dynamic antenna system" that adapts to the environment and ensures the best reception by having six strategically placed antennas.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The laptop can seamlessly switch between cellular connection and Wi-Fi to ensure uninterrupted connection. Also, it can work as a mobile hotspot for other devices in areas where Wi-Fi is not available.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unlike other laptops with antennas near the bottom of the device, the Surface Laptop 5G has its antennas placed higher for reduced interference. Microsoft also developed a new case material, multi-layered laminate, that allows radio signals to pass through without reducing performance, while still delivering the durability, lightness, and premium feel of Surface products.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Like the rest of modern Surface devices, the Surface Laptop 5G is a Copilot+ PC with Intel's NPU that enables various AI-powered experiences and features such as Recall, Click to Do, and more.
</p>

<p>

	In recent financial meetings and reports, Ubisoft has doubled down on blaming others for its shortcomings.
</h3>

<p>
	Ubisoft is making a lot of headlines lately, and not for the right reasons. Right behind telling us that paying for progression is fun comes their latest take: they're now blaming everyone but themselves for their recent failures in the gaming market.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First, starting with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-outlaws-faq" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-outlaws-faq" rel="external nofollow">Star Wars: Outlaws,</a> Ubisoft has come out claiming the game failed to meet expectations because <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/star-wars" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/star-wars" rel="external nofollow">Star Wars</a> itself isn't popular at the moment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As reported by <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.thegamer.com/ubisoft-yves-guillemot-star-wars-outlaws-low-sales-shareholder-reason/" href="https://www.thegamer.com/ubisoft-yves-guillemot-star-wars-outlaws-low-sales-shareholder-reason/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">TheGamer,</a> Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, said, <em>"Outlaws was released at a time when the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters."</em>

			<em><span>An average game is still decent, but in a storm of stellar games releasing lately, it's not enough to stand out amongst a crowded space. </span></em>
		</p>

		<p>
			<em><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Not only does this fail to take into account the success of projects like The Mandalorian, a literal massive outlaw-style Star Wars franchise, but it also forgets to consider the reality that Outlaws itself may have been as <em>mid as the Mid Rim.</em>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Seriously, while we gave it a solid <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-outlaws-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-outlaws-review" rel="external nofollow">four out of five stars</a>, the overall sentiment placed it in the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-outlaws-reviews-are-in-heres-a-metacritic-roundup-of-what-everyones-saying-about-this-trip-to-the-galaxy-far-far-away" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-outlaws-reviews-are-in-heres-a-metacritic-roundup-of-what-everyones-saying-about-this-trip-to-the-galaxy-far-far-away" rel="external nofollow">75 range on Metacritic</a>. It launched to decent reviews, but came with a plethora of technical and performance issues, alongside gameplay mechanics like instant failed stealth missions that gamers absolutely loathe.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The likelihood that it's the general feeling toward Star Wars, considering programs like Andor, The Mandalorian, and Rogue One received massive praise from Star Wars fans, is akin to finding the droids you're looking for.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Not to mention, another Star Wars game has seen a monumental resurgence in recent months. You might have heard of it: <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-battlefront-2-player-counts-are-blowing-up-steam-charts-again" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/star-wars-battlefront-2-player-counts-are-blowing-up-steam-charts-again" rel="external nofollow">Battlefront 2</a>.

							To continue their trend of blaming anyone but themselves, Ubisoft has taken up arms against the current Rebellion of gamers in a form similar to the Empire. According to their <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://staticctf.ubisoft.com/8aefmxkxpxwl/2jOPqNEzotGX0odqDUt5jr/57f0ba952c3be14b38ba97a02b17c119/Ent_AGM_2025.07.10_URD_GB_Interactif_def.pdf" href="chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://staticctf.ubisoft.com/8aefmxkxpxwl/2jOPqNEzotGX0odqDUt5jr/57f0ba952c3be14b38ba97a02b17c119/Ent_AGM_2025.07.10_URD_GB_Interactif_def.pdf" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">latest financial report</a>, gamers and their dang organized groups are to blame for their recent shortcomings.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							<em>"Ubisoft is exposed to risks of damage to its reputation resulting from online bashing, understood as massive, sometimes virulent and organized campaigns of criticism against its products, teams or public statements,"</em> said a representative.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							I'm sure this could also refer to the potential backlash over <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/assassins-creed-shadows-2-million-players" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/assassins-creed-shadows-2-million-players" rel="external nofollow">Assassin's Creed: Shadows</a> and their inclusion of a black Samurai, which, if you ask me, is one of the silliest arguments gamers have ever made. This franchise has always been history-light in its presentation.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Heck, the Desmond from the original timeline died, sacrificing himself so that a lady from the First Civilization could return from the dead in a virtual form to protect the Earth from a world-ending solar flare. Let some stuff go, for crying out loud.

											I realize the article I wrote yesterday also focused on Ubisoft's bitter-tasting financial analysis on what gamers really enjoy, so it feels sad to take another shot at them. Fallout: Bakersfield transforms the original RPG into a DOOM-style shooter, and it looks terrific.
</h3>

After all, while <em>is </em>on the way, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/bethesda-game-studios" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/bethesda-game-studios" rel="external nofollow">Bethesda</a> has <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/the-elder-scrolls-6" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/the-elder-scrolls-6" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">The Elder Scrolls 6</a> to develop first.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The good news, though, is that Fallout's passionate community is always working on awesome mod projects like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/this-literal-game-changing-fallout-mod-takes-players-to-a-post-nuclear-london-after-4-years-of-development" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/this-literal-game-changing-fallout-mod-takes-players-to-a-post-nuclear-london-after-4-years-of-development" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Fallout London</a> to tide hungry fans over. And thanks to the release of a viral new trailer this pas weekend, I've been made aware of one in the works that just might be one of the coolest mods I've ever seen anyone make.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That project is Fallout: Bakersfield — a total conversion mod for the first DOOM that reimagines the original isometric Fallout CRPG as an old-school FPS. I'll dig into specific details below, but honestly? Its <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e8WrmOibpM" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e8WrmOibpM" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">new trailer</a> and gameplay footage speaks to how impressive it is far better than I ever could, so give it a watch.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div data-nosnippet="">
	<div>
		<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">
			<div>
				<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="113" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/6e8WrmOibpM?feature=oembed" title="Fallout: Bakersfield Trailer" width="200"></iframe>
			</div>
		</div>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			As the name implies, Fallout: Bakersfield is set in the city of Bakersfield, California; longtime Fallout fans will recognize that as Necropolis, the "City of the Dead" from the first game that became something of a safe haven for ghouls (humans mutated by severe and prolonged radiation exposure). As the trailer shows, you'll be playing as a Vault 13 vault dweller, with the appearance of Harry the super mutant suggesting you'll either be the protagonist of Fallout 1 or the scout Talius that was sent before them.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The gameplay of the mod looks to be a fusion of classic Fallout RPG systems and the FPS action of the original DOOM, complete with a bespoke UI that draws inspiration from both games for visuals and functionality (the Fallout-style log messages in particular are a <em>really </em>nice touch).
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Its graphics, too, harken back to Fallout 1's pixel-y post-apocalyptic retro-futurism and its over-the-top gore, with the "2.5D" perspective — 2D sprites in 3D environments — giving the experience its DOOM feel.

			The trailer shows combat against ghouls with a wide variety of Fallout 1 weapons like the 10mm SMG, Flamer, and Plasma Pistol, along with light environmental prop destruction, the ability to open containers to collect the items within, and even some simple dialogue options to pick from when you're talking instead of blasting.

						<p>
							Again, this is hands-down one of the coolest-looking Fallout (or DOOM) mods I've ever seen, and easily one of the neatest made for a game in general, too. As for when it's coming out, a concrete release date hasn't yet been provided, but its developers say it's about 60% finished, with 30% of creatures, 80% of environments, walls, and tiles, and 50% of weapons and UI elements completed.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							The team behind Fallout: Bakersfield is Alexander "Red888Guns" Berezin and Denis Berezin, and the pair have <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://boosty.to/red888guns" href="https://boosty.to/red888guns" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">a Boosty page</a> you can subscribe to for $2.66/month if you'd like to donate. Subscribers will get access to periodic progress updates and blog posts as development continues. You can also gift subscriptions to someone else if you'd like to.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							However, they've been upfront about emphasizing that profit is not a goal with this project, even going so far as to disable monetization for the trailer video. "This project isn't supposed to generate financial profit for its creators. ... Financial support IS NOT necessary and will NOT generally affect the development process," reads its description.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Still, I'm going to throw a few dollars their way to support them and the project, and I encourage you to consider doing so as well if you're as excited for Fallout: Bakersfield as I am. Creative mods like this one explore opportunities larger studios may never consider, and they have been — and will continue to be — fresh, new experiences fans can enjoy while they're waiting for official releases.

	Ubisoft has been rather quiet about <a automate_uuid="eb8dfead-205d-4943-ad17-c28668a6a492" href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/avatar-frontiers-of-pandora-review-a-gorgeous-but-generic-experience/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora</em></a>, the open-world action game set in James Cameron's <em>Avatar</em> universe, since the start of 2025. The title received its second and final promised expansion, <a automate_uuid="28c262ae-8510-4e2a-9521-922a6b3a8e44" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/avatar-frontiers-of-pandorasecrets-of-the-spires-dlc-lands-alongside-ps5-pro-support/" rel="external nofollow">Secrets of the Spires</a>, back in November 2024, followed by a minor game update in December this year. Now, Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment have confirmed that more features are currently in development, but there's a rather long wait.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First off, the <em>Avatar</em> game is gaining a third-person camera to play the entire game with and explore Pandora from a new perspective. This will be a quick-switch option too, with players being able to swap between the original first-person and the new third-person camera using a button press while in-game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This isn't just a new camera angle update either, as Ubisoft says it has reworked everything from animations to the Na'vi controls to make the third-person experience a fresh one.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Whether exploring the Western Frontier, fighting the RDA, or simply taking in the views, Third-Person Mode brings a new sense of scale, freedom, and immersion," says the development team in a <a automate_uuid="aa7a699e-2a86-437f-9d0e-646c143e2a1b" href="https://news.ubisoft.com/en-us/article/2JDSOs3ifJqii92cpKORfb/avatar-frontiers-of-pandora-thirdperson-update-coming-december-5" rel="external nofollow">blog post</a>. "The development team has reworked animations, controls, audio, and camera systems to ensure the experience feels seamless and intuitive."

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Next, the same update will deliver New Game+ to the title. Like with other games, this mode will only be unlocked after finishing the game. When restarting the story with New Game+ enabled, all inventory and unlocked skills will transfer over. Massive is also promising "a brand-new skill tree and more powerful gear" in this mode.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We've always envisioned <em>Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora</em> as a living world that evolves with our players," adds Omar Bouali, creative director at Massive Entertainment. "This update is a celebration of our community's passion and we're thankful to our players for their support. It means the world to our team."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The <em>Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora</em> update carrying these two features will land on December 5, just a couple of weeks prior to when the next entry in the movie franchise, <em>Avatar: Fire and Ash</em>, is supposed to hit theaters.

							Look, I get that player skins are all the rage, thanks to games like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/call-of-duty" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/call-of-duty" rel="external nofollow">Call of Duty</a>, Fortnite, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/apex-legends" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/apex-legends" rel="external nofollow">Apex Legends</a>, and even my favorite Ubisoft game, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming" data-before-rewrite-redirect="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/rainbow-six/" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming" rel="external nofollow">Rainbow Six Siege X</a>. I also understand the need for games to have microtransactions to balance the ever increasing development costs and ongoing expenses associated with keeping online community games running for a decade or more.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							What I don't understand is the need to assert that people get enjoyment from swiping their credit card. I'd argue that the skins earned without the assistance of cash are the most impressive. The ones that people love the most are those that were hard-earned.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							I'll go to my last example, Rainbow Six Siege X. Reaching a specific rank comes with charms and avatar backgrounds that showcase the achievement. These "achieved" skins bring a level of self-satisfaction no exchange of currency could acquire over a game.

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Sure, buying skins can bring <strong>some </strong>level of enjoyment, but those feelings are intermixed with a whole other list of reasons players buy them. It feels scummy labeling it as a "fun" enhancer when there's so much else behind it.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									FOMO (the Fear of Missing Out) is a primary driver of cosmetic purchases. There are legitimate patents behind some of this, showcasing player matchmaking based on driving players to purchase skins.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									You see enough players throwing cash at the game, it becomes harder and harder to say no. Humanity drives the feeling of wanting to fit in, thus, FOMO.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									With all that said, I can see a reasonable argument to be made that players buying skins provides a certain level of enjoyment. I'm sure everyone has thrown a few bucks at their favorite game; even I have, and in bulk at times for my favorite creations.

											From Elder Scrolls' Horse Armor packs to buying gun locations in Far Cry 6 — what are we doing, people? Buying a $70 game, then spending a series of $5 stacks to buy settlement resources, some form of in-game currency, alongside map sites, is just plain dumb.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Dying Light series quickly earned its place in the pantheon of great zombie games by blending brutal first-person combat with satisfying parkour movement – all set within dangerous open worlds. The series has thus far delivered on offering a slick and thrilling survival experience, but with the upcoming Dying Light: The Beast, we see developer Techland return to its roots for a more focused concept that lets an amped up returning protagonist Kyle Crane loose in an even more hostile setting.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I got to spend over four hours playing the opening of Dying Light: The Beast, getting reacquainted with Kyle Crane as he comes to grips with a more feral world after the events of the second game. Playing The Beast was very much like a turbo-charged version of the original game, so much so that you may as well call it Super Dying Light. So with that, here are six of the most exciting and game-changing upgrades that the upcoming sequel brings to the table.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong style="line-height:28.9px;">1. A More Focused Story, and the Return of Kyle Crane</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Dying Light 2 took a bold step towards building an RPG-style story with game-changing events defined by your choices. While certainly ambitious, it didn't quite reach its full potential in the broader sense. For The Beast, we instead see a more defined story about the return of Kyle Crane, who has undergone some horrific experiments following the shocking ending of the Dying Light 1 expansion The Following. Now hellbent on revenge against the mysterious antagonist known as The Baron, Crane has to relearn his skills as a survivalist while leveraging some powerful abilities to level the playing field.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<div>
	<strong>Several interactions with key characters also play out in Mass Effect-style chats.</strong>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Beast draws inspiration from Dying Light 2 and does more to make Kyle a more central figure within his story. Along with new third-person cutscenes, there are now more opportunities to help build Crane's understanding of the state of things in Castor Woods. Several interactions with key characters also play out in Mass Effect-style chats, which can give you more insight into plot developments and to pick up on Dying Light lore. I really appreciate the more focused take on storytelling and character growth from these moments, especially with Kyle Crane front and center. And it's a cool opportunity to catch up on what's changed in the world following the events of Dying Light 2.
</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>

		</div>

		<div>
			<strong style="line-height:28.9px;">2. You Hit the Ground Running</strong>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Dying Light: The Beast does well to show its teeth early, making the point that this is a more brutal take on the series. Many of the combat encounters in the opening show how aggressive and imposing the infected can be, with even the common foes managing to get the jump on me when I let my guard down. Fortunately, Kyle Crane is a far more capable survivalist than before. So much so that many abilities locked off in different skill trees from previous games, such as the parkour-based high jumps and pulling off counter grabs, are a part of Crane's core kit and can be used immediately. Furthermore, you can even use new takedowns on weakened enemies, which act as glory kills for the lesser and more elite infected.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I certainly appreciated being able to do so without having to endure much of a retread of the familiar power grind back to securing vital skills. This made me feel a bit more confident to face down foes armed with a hammer or machete, thanks to some amped-up beast powers running through Crane's body. That said, I still sometimes felt overwhelmed by combat encounters and had to make tactical retreats often to heal. But thankfully, new skills that can be unlocked can help level the playing field, such as the return of the flying drop kick and the array of new beast powers that Kyle can unleash.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	3. <strong style="line-height:28.9px;">A More Organized Way to Acquire New Skills</strong>
</p>

<p>
	The previous games featured skills spread across the combat, parkour, and survival trees, with your playstyle defining growth for each. Dying Light: The Beast ditches the specialized leveling system in favor of more traditional leveling, with earned skill points spent across the different combat and traversal branches at your leisure. This helps to even out character growth, with The Beast avoiding the lopsided growth that could occur in the first two Dying Lights.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the special Beast skill tree will require some more effort to unlock, as only by defeating the various Chimera bosses hidden throughout Castor Woods, which reveal themselves during story missions and hidden locations. Once you defeat one, Crane will acquire a sample of the Chimera, which will expand his more powerful skills.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong style="line-height:28.9px;">4. Going Beast Mode</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Dying Light: The Beast finally grants players new abilities and skills that have been long-teased throughout the series. As a powered-up state that goes into effect once you've dished out or sustained enough damage, Crane will automatically enter beast mode, amping up his melee strikes and agility in ways that let you cut loose against common and elite foes alike. Additional Beast powers add new abilities like a running jump, a ground slam, and even the ability to pick up boulders and toss them at foes, just like those annoying bruiser enemies from earlier games.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<div>
	The developers even likened beast mode to acquiring a power pellet in Pac-Man.
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Dying Light series has always balanced that sense of power with feeling vulnerable in a fight, but entering beast mode offers up a satisfying burst of strength that not only comes in clutch, but can also lead to a fantastic finish to a fight. The developers even likened the mode to acquiring a power pellet in Pac-Man, which will turn your enemies into weaklings in no time. And while beast mode can come in handy, it’ll unfortunately activate the moment the meter is filled, which can lead to some awkward moments where the action is winding down and you’re still pumped up.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	5. <strong style="line-height:28.9px;">Re-embracing Survival Horror by Adding More Danger </strong>
</p>

<p>
	One moment that instills a sense of dread for every Dying Light player is right when nightfall hits. In that moment, the game transitions into a full-on survival horror experience as the powerful, volatile infected come out to play. While Dying Light 2 eased the tension of nighttime gameplay to make it more approachable, this ultimately came at the expense of its larger experience. This was later patched with further updates, and The Beast fully embraces the original vision of survival during the night.
</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>
			<div>
				<div>
					<div>

					</div>

					<div>
						Even with Crane's enhanced beast powers and arsenal of weapons, I still found myself rattled when it came to trying to find safety during the evening. During one particular instance, I found myself trapped on the rooftops of the Old Town district, and I was surrounded by three volatile infected that were actively on the hunt for me after I mistimed my jump and landed into the streets below. The volatile are more aggressive and intelligent than ever, and the nighttime is seriously unsettling to explore. Still, The Beast manages to strike a great balance with making you capable of surviving the odds, but totally vulnerable when left to fend for yourself.
					</div>
				</div>
			</div>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>

		</div>

		<div>
			6. <strong style="line-height:28.9px;">This Is Not an Expansion, but a Proper Sequel</strong>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	A prevailing worry other fans, including myself, had with Dying Light: The Beast was that it was going to be a more bite-sized follow-up, but after my hands-on time, developer Techland had proven me wrong with the upcoming standalone game. The scale of The Beast is much closer to the original Dying Light, which the devs have stated was the sweet spot when it came to playing the more aggressive take on their open-world survival game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What makes Dying Light: The Beast work well, based on my limited time with it, is that it combines the best aspects of both the original and the first sequel. It adopts a more thoughtful approach to presenting its main narrative and characters from the second, while retaining the more confident and hard-hitting, tense action from the original. Without the decision paralysis that could come from Dying Light 2's complex narrative, The Beast goes all-in on Crane's revenge story that's chock-full of the thrills and scares that the series is all about – and that seems to be what fans are most looking forward to with the next entry in this series.
</p>

	AI PCs are becoming the norm, but a lack of trust and understanding could limit their real-world impact.

The tech giant shared the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://newsroom.intel.com/artificial-intelligence/ai-pc-global-report" href="https://newsroom.intel.com/artificial-intelligence/ai-pc-global-report" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">results of a survey</a> of over 5,000 businesses and IT decision makers conducted to gain insight into the adoption of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" data-before-rewrite-redirect="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/artificial-intelligence" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" rel="external nofollow">AI</a> PCs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The survey aimed to determine how much people know about AI PCs and what roadblocks prevent AI PC adoption.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The survey, which was commissioned by Intel, showed that 87% of global businesses are transitioning to AI PCs or plan to transition in the future.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Intel highlighted that many people already rely on AI services, such as real-time translation. However, many AI tools are cloud-based and do not require the end user to have an AI PC.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But the data also suggests that IT workers want local AI capabilities and that those departments have the support of C-suite executives.
</p>

<h2 id="what-s-holding-ai-pcs-back-3">
	What’s holding AI PCs back?
</h2>

<p>
	An education gap appears to be a major factor limiting AI PC adoption. According to Intel, only 35% of employees have a "concrete understanding" of the business value of AI. In contrast, over half of leadership team members see the potential brought by AI PCs, the survey results state:
</p>

<p>

	<li>
		<em>Among the wider employee base, there’s an education gap around the potential of AI PCs—only 35% of employees are thought to have a concrete understanding of this technology’s business value, so they aren’t likely to be the driving force behind AI PC adoption.</em>
	</li>
	<li>
		<em>Conversely, more than half (51%) of leadership team members have a firm understanding of the potential AI PCs bring—this is likely to make them more receptive to the idea of investment.</em>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Honestly, I find those figures shocking. In fact, I'd go as far as to say they are unbelievable.

			I don't think that's Intel's fault, however. In my experience — outside of my current place of work — middle and upper management like using buzzwords and feeling like they're on the cutting edge. I would fully expect leaders to confidently proclaim AI is the future, regardless of whether they have any concrete plans for the technology.

		<p>
			Whether those managers genuinely believe the hype or just like being modern is impossible to say.

		<p>
			In my opinion, using a survey to determine how many managers and leaders understand AI is like using a scan of Tinder profiles to determine how many male users are actually 6'0" tall. People lie on surveys (and on dating profiles).

		<p>
			Intel's survey revealed that roughly 33% of non-adopters cite security as their biggest concern about AI PCs. In contrast, only 23% of people using AI highlight security as a challenge.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Knowledge is a significant roadblock to AI PC adoption, according to Intel. More specifically, 34% of respondents listed the need for training as the biggest issue.
		</p>

		<p>

			Notably, 33% of those who use AI PCs have not experienced any issues at all, security-related or otherwise.

That's the largest YoY increase since 2022, which occurred during the global pandemic that spiked PC demand.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					The firm attributes this growth to the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/windows-10-esu-support-free-updates-cloud-backup" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/windows-10-esu-support-free-updates-cloud-backup" rel="external nofollow">upcoming end of Windows 10 support,</a> and early adoption of AI PCs was a key factor in the increase in PC shipments. Global tariffs were also a factor, since retailers have had to build up inventory for later this year.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					As a reminder, PC shipment figures refer to how many devices were sent out by manufacturers. PC <em>sales </em>(what people actually bought) are a separate metric.

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					PC shipments generally rise or fall based on projections. Uncertainty surrounds upcoming quarters since there are several factors at play, such as fluctuating <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/buy-new-laptop-tariffs" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/buy-new-laptop-tariffs" rel="external nofollow">tariffs</a>.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					"Due to the US tariff-related uncertainty, PC shipments will likely weaken YoY starting from H2 2025," said Senior Analyst Minsoo Kang to Counterpoint Research. "However, demand for AI PCs is expected to become a significant tailwind in 2026. We expect more than half of the laptops shipped in 2026 onward to be an AI Laptop."
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

					AI PCs may also become standard in the near future, which will make it difficult to determine how much of a factor AI capabilities are for consumers.

That may be for the best, since the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-big-copilot-pc-launch-has-been-a-total-disaster" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-big-copilot-pc-launch-has-been-a-total-disaster" rel="external nofollow">"Copilot+ PC launch has been a total disaster."</a>
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									As far as I'm aware, neither Qualcomm nor Microsoft specified that there was an exclusivity agreement regarding Copilot+ PCs, but <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-snapdragon-x-elite" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-snapdragon-x-elite" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon X</a> processors were the only chips to power Copilot+ PCs for quite a while.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/processors/amd" data-before-rewrite-redirect="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/amd" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/processors/amd" rel="external nofollow">AMD</a> and Intel started shipping chips compatible with Copilot+ PC features in August 2024, but Microsoft did not extend the full range of Copilot+ experiences to those chips until later.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									That strange dynamic has continued. In the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2025/03/31/expanding-copilot-pc-experiences-across-amd-intel-and-snapdragon-powered-devices/" href="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2025/03/31/expanding-copilot-pc-experiences-across-amd-intel-and-snapdragon-powered-devices/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">same blog post</a> that announced the expansion of the Copilot+ PC experience to PCs powered by AMD Ryzen AI 300 series and Intel Core Ultra 200V chips, Microsoft announced a feature that would be exclusive to Snapdragon X-powered PCs for a limited time.

											Based on PC shipments, survey results, and all the information available, it is clear that many people have moved to AI PCs or plan to transition. What's unclear is the driving factor behind AI PC adoption.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											Business leaders appear to value the potential of AI PCs. Even if the technology cannot have an immediate impact on productivity or revenue, organizations can future-proof themselves by purchasing AI PCs.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											On the consumer side of things, an increasing number of entry-level and mid-range laptops will be AI PCs by default. Many premium computers are also AI PCs.

	<em>Here, we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And, of course, you may find a word or two about older versions.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 10's support is quickly approaching (<a automate_uuid="749ca4ed-3dbd-4160-816c-b07a0de2d6ff" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/another-ancient-version-of-windows-10-is-losing-support-in-three-months-too/" rel="external nofollow">including exotic editions, such as the original LTSB</a>), and with Microsoft offering only 12 months of extended security updates for regular users, multiple groups provide their own solutions for the inevitable demise of hundreds of millions of PCs. The Restart Project released a so-called "<a automate_uuid="5443ed7c-41a0-4c3b-aefb-11a191218205" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/anti-microsoft-end-of-windows-10-toolkit-released-for-unsupported-windows-11-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">End of Windows 10 toolkit</a>" to help community repair groups deal with the upcoming event.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If your computer is not supported but you still want to leave Windows 10 behind, try <a automate_uuid="d1d3e445-3ca0-44fd-bc5b-88b808beea86" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/popular-tool-for-skipping-windows-11-requirements-updated-with-important-new-feature/" rel="external nofollow">the recently updated Flyby11 app</a>, which received a new way to download and patch Windows 11 images. You can also check out this guide to learn <a automate_uuid="7bace321-e9fd-4409-9150-3df4ac55e610" href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-create-lightweight-windows-11-for-unsupported-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">how to create a lightweight Windows 11 image</a> for unsupported PCs. Alternatively, you can sign up for the Extended Security Update program and get one more year of updates for free, as described <a automate_uuid="37fd196c-613e-48dc-ab1b-2d7ad3df46fa" href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-get-one-more-year-of-windows-10-updates-for-free/" rel="external nofollow">in our newly published guide</a>.

<p>
	If you plan to stay with Windows 10 and you use Office apps, Microsoft has an important update for you. The company revealed that Microsoft 365 apps <a automate_uuid="451e732b-5099-4623-976e-800b0ae4fc7e" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reveals-when-exactly-it-stops-extended-windows-10-support-for-office-365-apps/" rel="external nofollow">will stop receiving feature updates</a> in August 2026 for the Current Channel, October 2026 for the Monthly Enterprise Channel, and January 2027 for the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This week, Windows 11 version 24H2 received <a automate_uuid="a2e126ff-9f41-4299-a0ee-cc59f3c67ca8" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-24h2-gets-emergency-fix-kb5064489-for-azure-vm-boot-issues/" rel="external nofollow">a new out-of-band update</a> with an emergency fix for Azure VM boot issues. Also, Microsoft confirmed <a automate_uuid="80cb2aeb-fe5e-45f5-ac6b-5d7a50fe261e" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/latest-patch-tuesday-has-broken-emoji-search-panel-in-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">problems with the emoji panel</a> in Windows 10, the fact that it <a automate_uuid="706db994-ab26-4d14-8fee-64900b1bd3e9" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-admits-it-hasnt-really-resolved-windows-firewall-issue-yet/" rel="external nofollow">could not resolve a recent Windows Firewall issue</a>, and details about <a automate_uuid="4767f282-6812-4604-b29b-12543f667f67" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reveals-one-of-the-ways-its-making-windows-11-25h2-drivers-better/" rel="external nofollow">driver improvements</a> in Windows 11 version 25H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft also announced that Windows 11 images <a automate_uuid="3b2ee3ee-206e-44dd-9659-9c3c1c419776" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/stock-windows-11-apps-get-a-big-change-to-improve-user-experience-and-security/" rel="external nofollow">now include more recent versions of inbox apps</a>. This allows customers to use those apps right after installing Windows and without wasting time and bandwidth on updates. Another benefit to this is that more recent versions include all the security fixes, which minimizes security risks and threats.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To finish this week's Windows 11 section, here is our recap of the <a automate_uuid="c93e2500-c00e-439c-8e43-f9d55a49e7f4" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/top-10-cool-and-useful-features-windows-11-received-in-2025/" rel="external nofollow">top 10 useful and cool features</a> that Windows 11 received in the first half of 2025. This week, Microsoft revealed details about <a automate_uuid="8879f543-4ae3-4ac4-88b8-42e2a164b4fb" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/people-hated-this-windows-11-feature-so-microsoft-removed-it/" rel="external nofollow">why a particular taskbar feature for Windows 11 was killed</a>. As it turned out, Microsoft's idea for a simplified taskbar received so much flak from Windows insiders that the company was forced to kill it for good.

	With the latest preview builds, Microsoft is testing <a automate_uuid="240f2d58-22d7-4e00-8c8f-a580c324f574" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-improving-windows-11-battery-life-with-a-new-power-saver/" rel="external nofollow">a big new feature for its operating system</a>. Windows 11 is getting a new adaptive power saver, which will turn on or off depending on workload and not your current battery level. Microsoft is also changing how energy saver affects various parts of your system, such as the display, background tasks, and more.

	After years of mismanagement and questionable product tie-ins, the 80s computer brand is back, now with a fan at the helm. But is the appetite for retro gaming still big enough for it to succeed?
</h3>

<p>
	<span class="lead-in-text-callout">In 1994, Commodore</span> crashed and burned. Once a home computing giant across the US and Europe, the company was undone by mismanagement and misfires. The carcass was picked clean and the pieces resold so many times that it was hard to keep track, but with each new owner came the inevitable—an attempt to make a fast buck by slapping the famous C= logo on any old junk.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Fans watched in horror as the brand appeared on the mediocre Web.it all-in-one PC, the bizarrely named Gravel in Pocket media player, and the <a href="https://www.wired.com/2015/07/commodore-smartphone/" rel="external nofollow">Commodore smartphone</a>. There was even a Commodore-branded shredder. So when retro gaming YouTuber <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://www.perifractic.com/" href="https://www.perifractic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Christian “Perifractic” Simpson</a> announced he wanted to buy what remained of Commodore and give it a new life, questions were asked. Chief among them: does the world still even need Commodore?
</p>

<h2 class="paywall">
	When I’m 64
</h2>

<p>
	Commodore as a brand initially focused on typewriters and calculators, but its glory days arrived with the rise of home micros, causing a swift rebirth as Commodore International Computing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Its biggest success was the Commodore 64, which hit the sweet spot between affordability and potential. While the CPU was sluggish, powerful graphics and a surprisingly capable sound chip (which remains revered today) spurred creativity on both sides of the Atlantic. Over 5,000 commercial games were released during the machine’s heyday, and more than 15 million units were sold, making the C64 still one of the highest-selling single computer models ever.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It’s this legacy Simpson aims to revive. Initially, he sought a licensing deal with the Commodore brand owners, imagining “official” boards and replacement components as part of an inclusive, community-friendly conglomerate. These plans snowballed during discussions, and Simpson found himself securing an agreement to buy Commodore outright for a “low seven-figure” sum. He now serves as Commodore CEO and promises to revive the company in a sustainable way—one that won’t repeat the failures of the past.

<p>
	But here’s where things get tricky. Simpson doesn’t actually own the original company because that company no longer exists. Commodore’s 1990s dismemberment means the current iteration owns a number of trademarks, but essential parts of the ecosystem remain scattered. C64 ROMs and Amiga (Commodore’s 16-bit micro) rights belong to Cloanto and Amiga Corporation. AmigaOS is controlled by Hyperion Entertainment. And aside from the odd mass-market flirtation from clone machines, like the <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C64_Direct-to-TV" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C64_Direct-to-TV" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">C64DTV</a> all-in-one joystick and the plug-and-play <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://retrogames.biz/products/thec64-mini/" href="https://retrogames.biz/products/thec64-mini/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">THEC64 Mini</a>, major developments that mattered for the past 30 years have all come from the community, not the brand.
</p>

<h2 class="paywall">
	Computers for the Masses
</h2>

<p>
	It’s for these reasons Simpson finds himself walking multiple tightropes. He must avoid alienating enthusiasts that kept the Commodore flame alive, and not imply that only his new Commodore confers legitimacy. He must collaborate closely with owners of other key puzzle pieces and license the Commodore brand fairly to interested third parties. And to recoup that seven-figure sum, the new Commodore must sell enough new hardware, which means moving beyond a dwindling core fanbase.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For now, Simpson’s initial play banks heavily on nostalgia—not solely for the C64, but for an entire era. The new <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://www.commodore.net" href="https://www.commodore.net" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Commodore website</a> pitches the company as a “digital detox brand [that’s] grounded in digital minimalism.” It rails against social media, glorifies the good old days of “techno optimism”—apparently, the 1980s through to the mid-1990s—and hints that Commodore can help users reclaim their childhoods. But the company also wants to be seen as an innovator with an eye on the future, and this results in a kind of branding whiplash. The new Commodore wants to be both reboot <em>and</em> original; past <em>and</em> future.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Fittingly, this iteration’s debut product, the Commodore 64 Ultimate, embodies such tensions. The $500 gold-bling <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate-collectible-founders-edition-batch1" href="https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate-collectible-founders-edition-batch1" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Founders Edition</a> and $350 LED-laden disco case <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate-starlight-edition-batch1" href="https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate-starlight-edition-batch1" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Starlight Edition</a> don’t exactly scream digital minimalism. But the $300 <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate-basic-beige-batch1" href="https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate-basic-beige-batch1" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">BASIC Beige</a> <em>is</em> the spitting image of the original hardware. All models bridge authenticity and modernity by supporting original C64 peripherals and current connectivity, including 1080p HDMI output so you needn’t hunt down a CRT TV. Inside, it’s all FPGAS—field programmable gate arrays—which ultimately mean simulation rather than the less-accurate emulation found in Chinese retro handhelds and cheap plug-and-play TV devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some critics nonetheless grumble that even this “new” machine is past and present in another way, effectively being an amalgamation of existing products, from the keycaps to the having the <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://ultimate64.com" href="https://ultimate64.com" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Ultimate64</a> board at its core. However, Ultimate64 creator Gideon Zweijtzer has publicly disagreed that Simpson is merely assembling other people’s hard work and slapping on a logo. He believes the Commodore 64 Ultimate was a “joint effort between parties to create a cohesive package” and credits Simpson as someone with reach who can “bring people together.”
</p>

<h2 class="paywall">
	The $64,000 Question
</h2>

<p>
	That reach will be essential because noble efforts, sentiment, and saying the right thing won’t bring sustainability. Even pent-up demand for a new Commodore 64—at the time of writing, over 4000 units have been sold, amounting to $1.5 million in revenue—is a one-off trick that can’t be repeated. History shows retro appeal can be short-lived. Outside the hardcore enthusiasts, fans tend to rapidly move beyond rose-tinted, wide-eyed nostalgia; the retro devices they’ve bought then gather dust. Few remain on sale for long because the market is finite and fickle.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And then, there's the question of games. A large slice of the annual retro gaming market—estimated to be around <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://www.marketreportanalytics.com/reports/retro-video-games-76465#summary" href="https://www.marketreportanalytics.com/reports/retro-video-games-76465#summary" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">$2.5 billion</a>, though no one has a great handle on the numbers—comes from software rather than hardware. The issue for Commodore here is that it never released any notable games of its own, so it can't mimic Atari’s ability to remake the Atari 2600 with modern connectivity while also reimagining 1980s classics like <em>Pong</em> and <em>Missile Command</em>. And even if Commodore <em>were</em> to license games, nothing in the entire C64 catalog has the cultural clout of <em>Pac-Man</em>, <em>Space Invaders</em>, <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, or <em>Super Mario Bros</em>.

	The alternate mainstream option would be an attempt to reestablish Commodore’s reputation as a brand that offers computing for the masses, not the classes, ringing in Simpson’s desire for a “simpler, distraction-free computing experience.” But what would that mean in practice? Unplugging? Educational and creative tools? Commodore 64 BASIC is notoriously bad, and it’s unclear whether enough newcomers will see value in a relatively expensive beige retro box when a <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/raspberry-pi-4-review-price-release/" rel="external nofollow">Raspberry Pi</a> costs a fraction of the price and can tap into a massive existing ecosystem. But an entirely new platform would be a colossally risky endeavor.
</p>

<h2 class="paywall">
	The Last Byte of a Legend
</h2>

<p>
	What is the endgame, then? Without hit games and obvious mainstream appeal, how does Commodore survive, let alone thrive? Is it even possible for this 1980s cultural icon to move beyond people who were there at the time and break out of its bubble? It’s hard to say.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Perhaps it doesn’t have to. Simpson envisions a “single, joined-up family of Commodore machines,” and that could be enough. Commodore would become a community-focused brand, presiding over a modest ecosystem, acting as a benevolent curator that elevates quality projects, brings just enough polish and legitimacy to help the scene flourish, and simply refuses to let the legacy fade. Although investors who’ve pumped in cash might see things differently.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A much worse scenario would be a repeat of the past: panic over income, leading to the brand again being stamped on unremarkable products, or the mismanagement and misfires that alienate partners and fans. There's also the very real possibility that Commodore might just discover the harsh reality of being a very niche, small player in an industry of giants. Any one of those could deal a final, fatal blow to the brand from which it would never recover, taking down swathes of the community with it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Still, this time feels different. This revival doesn’t come from cynicism but from genuine passion and love for the brand. Even so, the odds of success feel slim, whether that means sparking a new wave of computing optimism or returning the brand to cultural relevance. But for a while at least, fans can remain optimistic this might finally be the play that truly brings Commodore back to life.
</p>

Today, it gave a detailed report on Update 2.3, and it will be carrying everything from new vehicles and features to a host of performance-focused changes. The update will be landing right alongside the new macOS release of <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Kicking off the update with the performance upgrades, AMD Radeon RX 9000 series graphics card owners will be happy to know that AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling is finally hitting the sci-fi RPG. The option will only be enabled once an upcoming AMD graphics driver brings support for it, however, and a release date for that has not been revealed yet.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	CD Projekt RED has also upgraded AMD's frame generation tech to FSR version 3.1 for better stability and visuals too. This can be used with any upscaler the title offers, be it DLSS or XeSS. Speaking of the Intel-developed upscaler, XeSS 2.0 with frame generation is also landing with the update. Consoles aren't being forgotten either, as Variable Refresh Rate support is finally landing for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

<p>
	As for the new gameplay features, an AutoDrive functionality to let players relax as the cars drive themselves to map markers, a Delamine taxi service that can be called anywhere (for a fee), and even a cinematic camera mode for these two self-driving modes are all coming with the update. To match those, four new vehicles and side jobs for acquiring them have been added too.

<p>
	The <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> Update 2.3 is releasing tomorrow, July 17, across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Apple Silicon macOS machines. A Nintendo Switch 2 version of the update is also in development but will be arriving at a later date.

	More than two years ago at CES 2023, AMD unveiled its <a automate_uuid="4b96264c-4e31-47c7-a412-933d9d6dbf22" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-ryzen-7040-7045-7000x3d-radeon-rx-7600m-xt-aims-to-take-down-intel-apple-and-nvidia/" rel="external nofollow">Ryzen AI technology</a> indicating the direction the company's next processors would be going. Ryzen AI made its debut with the 7040 series mobile Zen 4 APUs. However, as this was a first gen product and so the NPU (neural processing unit) throughput <em>topped</em> out at 10 TOPS (trillion operations per second).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Fast forward to December the same year, the company announced the <a automate_uuid="da6ca131-e18d-4c6b-95a8-257814badab1" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-kicks-off-microsofts-2024-dream-of-ai-powered-windows-12-with-ryzen-8040-8050-series/" rel="external nofollow">succeeding 8040 series</a>, and while the CPU was still based on Zen 4, the AI capabilities were much improved with a combined TOPS of 39, where the NPU itself saw a 60% boost, with it now reaching 16 TOPS.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, this still was not enough to exceed <a automate_uuid="ffcc0469-65ea-4606-83b4-cd0b4ef249b6" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-updates-windows-11-minimum-processor-requirements-guidance-for-ai-pc-support/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's Copilot+ PC requirement</a>. If you are not familiar, Microsoft Copilot+ PC is a term Microsoft uses for the new AI PCs specifically geared towards Windows 11 24H2. Only systems that have higher than 40 NPU TOPS are eligible to be labelled as a <a automate_uuid="ada59640-2341-4d51-8832-643901476c21" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-explains-why-windows-11-copilot-pcs-are-way-better-than-old-windows-10-ones/" rel="external nofollow">Copilot+ PC</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At Computex 2024 last June, AMD released new <a automate_uuid="385ff229-f672-47c4-972f-dc0d52743393" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-ryzen-ai-300-exceeds-microsoft-copilot-pc-requirement-beats-qualcomm-apple-intel/" rel="external nofollow">Ryzen AI 300 series APUs</a> as it switched from the x000 series nomenclature to the new x00 series. With 300 chips, AMD debuted Zen 5 cores, RDNA 3.5 graphics, and XDNA 2-based NPU.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Ryzen AI 300 series mobile lineup currently bottoms out with the Ryzen AI 5 340. However, today, the company is releasing a new entry-level SKU with the Ryzen AI 5 330 and what's special about this that the new 330 APU still exceeds Microsoft's Copilot+ PC requirement despite being just a quad-core processor and that's because it gets the full NPU treatment like the more expensive options.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"The new AMD Ryzen AI 5 330 processor is designed to offer incredible everyday compute experiences in mainstream and affordable Copilot+ PCs. With 50 NPU TOPS, notebooks powered by AMD Ryzen AI 5 330 exceed Microsoft’s requirements for Copilot+ PCs, offering true next-gen AI experiences built for Windows 11," AMD says, describing the new APU. It adds "Systems powered by the Ryzen AI 5 330 processor will be available from OEMs, including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI and arriving in market in the coming months."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Aside from the CPU core count, the integrated GPU on the AI 5 330 also takes a cut as it has only two Compute Units (CUs). The new processor boosts up to 4.5 GHz from its base clock of 2.0 GHz depending on the configurable TDP that runs between 15-28 watts.
</p>

	Seagate's heat-assisted drive tech has been percolating for more than 20 years.
</h3>

<p>
	For more than two decades, hard drive manufacturer Seagate has been experimenting with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology for increasing hard drive density—drives that use tiny lasers to heat up and expand parts of the drive platter, write data, and then shut off to allow the platter to cool and contract, all within less than a nanosecond.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After decades of overly rosy availability predictions, Seagate <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/12/after-decades-of-talk-seagate-seems-ready-to-actually-drop-the-hamr-hard-drives/" rel="external nofollow">announced in late 2024</a> that it was finally delivering HAMR-based drives with capacities of up to 36TB to some datacenter customers. Today, the drives are finally <a href="https://www.seagate.com/news/news-archive/seagate-ships-30tb-drives-to-meet-global-surge-in-data-center-ai-storage-demand-pr/" rel="external nofollow">available for end users</a> and individual IT administrators to buy, albeit only in smaller capacities for now. Seagate and other retailers will sell you massive <a href="https://www.seagate.com/products/nas-drives/ironwolf-pro-hard-drive/?sku=ST30000NT011&amp;store=1" rel="external nofollow">30TB IronWolf Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.seagate.com/products/enterprise-drives/exos/exos-m/?ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&amp;ranMID=53538&amp;ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-PSXu4CAm82J_wC1YVfJaoA&amp;utm_campaign=10&amp;utm_content=TnL5HPStwNw" rel="external nofollow">Exos M hard drives</a> for $600, and 28TB drives for $570. Both drives use conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology, which performs better than the shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology sometimes used to increase disk density.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The drives are based on <a href="https://www.seagate.com/innovation/mozaic/?utm_source=RAN&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_content=TnL5HPStwNw&amp;utm_campaign=10&amp;ranMID=53538&amp;ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&amp;ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-kuLygliH3dM.3zkE898EtQ" rel="external nofollow">Seagate's Mosaic 3+</a> platform, which "incorporates Seagate’s unique implementation of HAMR to deliver mass-capacity storage at unprecedented areal densities of 3TB per disk and beyond."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Seagate's <a href="https://www.seagate.com/news/news-archive/seagate-ships-30tb-drives-to-meet-global-surge-in-data-center-ai-storage-demand-pr/" rel="external nofollow">press release</a> is focused mostly on the large drives' suitability for AI-related data storage—"AI" is mentioned in the body text 21 times, and it's not a long release. But obviously, they'll be useful for any kind of storage where you need as many TB as possible to fit into as small a space as possible.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although most consumer PCs have moved away from hard drives with spinning platters, they still provide the best storage-per-gigabyte for huge data centers where ultra-fast performance isn't necessary. Huge data center SSDs are also available but <a href="https://www.solidigm.com/products/technology/solidigm-path-to-122tb-ssd.html" rel="external nofollow">at much higher prices</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Seagate competitor Western Digital says that its first HAMR-based drives are <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/hdds/western-digital-still-plans-to-start-shipping-36tb-hamr-hard-drives-in-2027" rel="external nofollow">due in 2027</a>, though it has managed to reach 32TB using SMR technology. Toshiba <a href="https://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/ap-en/company/news/news-topics/2024/05/storage-20240514-1.html" rel="external nofollow">is testing HAMR drives</a> and has said it will sample some drives for testing in 2025, but it hasn't committed to a timeline for public availability.
</p>

	It's going to take every bit of society's ingenuity to save our jobs from the machines.
</h3>

<p>
	The rise of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" data-before-rewrite-redirect="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/artificial-intelligence" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" rel="external nofollow">artificial intelligence</a> (<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" data-before-rewrite-redirect="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/artificial-intelligence" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" rel="external nofollow">AI</a>) is a fascinating and terrifying subject.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While AI brings positive gains for our little planet we call home, there's also a good chance it will cause massive unrest as it gets smarter and becomes a much better employee than you or I.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides the ever more frequent reports of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/report-microsofts-2025-layoffs-revolve-around-its-desperate-usd80-billion-ai-infrastructure-investment" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/report-microsofts-2025-layoffs-revolve-around-its-desperate-usd80-billion-ai-infrastructure-investment" rel="external nofollow">significant layoffs and outright job losses</a> in the wake of AI's rise, the heads of many of the leading AI firms are also sounding the alarm.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But is the situation as bad as some of AI's most powerful players are making it out to be?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	NVIDIA is currently the hottest commodity on the AI market right now, as its chips are the ones that everyone wants powering their AI models. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/gpus/nvidia-became-the-first-usd4-trillion-company-heres-how-the-tech-giant-beat-microsoft-and-apple" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/gpus/nvidia-became-the-first-usd4-trillion-company-heres-how-the-tech-giant-beat-microsoft-and-apple" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">NVIDIA recently became the first $4 trillion company</a>, made possible largely by the ongoing AI race.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That gives NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang's comments on AI a lot of weight.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Huang was recently interviewed by <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/11/business/nvidia-jensen-huang-ai-job-loss" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/11/business/nvidia-jensen-huang-ai-job-loss" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">CNN</a>'s Fareed Zakaria, in which Huang expressed a bit of optimism alongside some pessimism about AI and the impact it's having on jobs (via <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/jensen-huang-adds-voice-to-those-warning-of-ai-induced-job-losses-but-only-if-the-world-runs-out-of-ideas" href="https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/jensen-huang-adds-voice-to-those-warning-of-ai-induced-job-losses-but-only-if-the-world-runs-out-of-ideas" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Tom's Hardware</a>).
</p>

<div id="slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-maUxnY3YMubYrFnCiEneTn">
	<div data-hydrate="true">
		<p class="QuoteNewsStyle">
			<em>"If the world runs out of ideas, then productivity gains translate to job loss," </em>said Huang, as he responded to a question about Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's current outlook on job replacement. <em>"The fundamental thing is this: do we have more ideas left in society? And if we do, if we’re more productive, we’ll be able to grow."</em>
		</p>

		<p>
			Huang is, of course, responding here to Amodei's opinion that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/work-productivity/anthropic-ceo-ai-slash-50-percent-entry-level-jobs" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/work-productivity/anthropic-ceo-ai-slash-50-percent-entry-level-jobs" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">AI could slash up to 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs</a>. The quote (via <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.axios.com/2025/05/28/ai-jobs-white-collar-unemployment-anthropic" href="https://www.axios.com/2025/05/28/ai-jobs-white-collar-unemployment-anthropic" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Axios</a>) from Anthropic's Amodei doesn't sugar-coat the current outlook for the future:
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			<em>"We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming. It's a very strange set of dynamics, where we're saying: 'You should be worried about where the technology we're building is going."</em>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Reading through this battle of words, it doesn't seem like Huang is exactly debating Amodei's idea that AI could push employment rates beyond what we've ever seen.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Instead, Huang believes that the workforce, just like it has done plenty of times in the past during technological revolutions, will endure on the back of our ingenuity. Huang reminds us that "even in the era of computers," there has been a rise in productivity and employment.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			<em>"Everybody's jobs will be affected. Some jobs will be lost. Many jobs will be created, and what I hope is that the productivity gains that we see in all the industries will lift society,</em>" said Huang.
		</p>

				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					I certainly see where these CEOs are coming from; their technology has the potential to completely rewrite human progress, and they don't want to be skewered for negative fallout when it does.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					However, on the other side of the argument, these CEOs could be using this doom-and-gloom strategy as a marketing tool.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					There is little risk to CEOs making grandiose predictions of job cuts that will appease shareholders, given that even if these claims are untrue that there won't be much public backlash.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					How everything plays out remains to be seen, but Huang's opinion that all jobs will be affected doesn't seem too far off.

				</p>

				<p>
					Only 46% of executives asked say they plan to move human workers replaced by AI to new roles.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					So, what jobs will those displaced by AI take on? I don't have an answer, but Huang believes that we, as a society will figure it out. Worried about your job? Just think harder!

	<div>
		<p dir="ltr">

		<p dir="ltr">
			The report comes from the latest episode of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/DDr2ZSFIEXk?t=3845s" rel="external nofollow">Xbox Two Podcast</a>, where Windows Central executive editor Jez Corden discussed how Xbox is handling Fallout as a franchise moving forward.
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">
			However, he didn't know what studio would be developing Fallout 5, as he believes Bethesda Game Studios' core teams are currently busy working on additional <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/bethesda-knows-fans-are-eager-for-starfield-updates-promises-exciting-year/1100-6529956/" rel="external nofollow">Starfield DLC</a> and <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-elder-scrolls-6-release-date-trailer-news/1100-6492383/" rel="external nofollow">The Elder Scrolls VI</a>.
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">
			Corden said from what he has heard, part of the forward push for Fallout 5 and Fallout in general came at the expense of ZeniMax Online's next MMO, codenamed Blackbird, which was <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-cancels-new-mmo-from-elder-scrolls-online-team-in-latest-wave-of-cuts-report/1100-6532915/" rel="external nofollow">canceled as part of Microsoft's latest round of layoffs</a>.
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">
			As Corden explains, MMOs are expensive to build and have to compete with established games like <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/games/world-of-warcraft/" rel="external nofollow">World of Warcraft</a> and even ZeniMax's own <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/games/the-elder-scrolls-online/" rel="external nofollow">The Elder Scrolls Online</a>. With that in mind, Microsoft made the decision to cancel ZeniMax's unannounced project and invest that money into Fallout, an established IP that would more likely be a "surefire win."
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">
			"From what I heard, it was a case of 'Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this [project Blackbird] to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?'" Corden said.
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">
			It is worth noting that Corden states that he doesn't have enough information to write a full story about Fallout 5 or who may be developing it, so it's worth taking the information above with a grain of salt.
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">
			Project Blackbird was still in pre-production when it was canceled, but no official details about the <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-details-revealed-about-elder-scrolls-online-devs-rumored-canceled-game/1100-6532943/" rel="external nofollow">next game from the Elder Scrolls Online dev</a> had been announced. It had reportedly been in development since 2018, ran on a new engine, and was to be a new sci-fi IP. Development on the game was said to have been going well and had begun ramping up, with higher-ups at Xbox seemingly approving of the game just a few months prior to cancellation.
		</p>

		<p dir="ltr">

			Regardless of who is developing Fallout 5, the fact that it is just now greenlit means it will likely be many years before it releases. Any Apple silicon device can play Cyberpunk 2077, as long as it has 16GB of unified memory.
</h3>

<p>
	<em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> is coming to macOS later this week, after it was originally set to <a href="/2024/10/30/24283651/cyberpunk-2077-launch-mac" rel="">debut in early 2025</a>. <em>Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition</em> will officially be available for Apple silicon devices for the first time on July 17th, from Apple’s own Mac App Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.com.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	CD Projekt Red has optimized <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> for a variety of Mac hardware, all the way from the early M1 models up to the latest M4 chip family. Only some M1 and M2 Macs are supported, though — you’ll need a Mac with 16GB or more of unified memory to play <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em>, so base 8GB M1 and M2 chips won’t be compatible.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There will be graphics presets that are optimized for each Apple silicon model, and more powerful Apple silicon chips will also fully support <a href="/2023/3/23/23653237/cyberpunk-2077-overdrive-mode-full-ray-tracing-path-tracing" rel="">features like path tracing</a>, which is a film-like full ray tracing mode that greatly improves lighting and occlusion in the game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD’s FSR upscaling and frame generation will also be available in <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> on Mac, helping the game feel more smooth with options like path tracing enabled. There will be MetalFX upscaling, too, alongside support for Apple’s Magic Mouse and Trackpad hardware.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple and CD Projekt Red haven’t shared performance data for what to expect across different Apple silicon Mac configurations. If you own an Apple XDR display, or any other HDR monitor, you’ll get HDR support in <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em>, and there’s even spatial audio and head-tracking with Apple AirPods.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mac owners have technically been able to run <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> on their devices for a couple years now, thanks to <a href="/2023/6/7/23752164/apple-mac-gaming-game-porting-toolkit-windows-games-macos" rel="">Apple’s own Proton-like game porting tool</a>. This official release means the game takes full advantage of Apple silicon and Apple’s native Metal graphics APIs, including its Tile-Based Deferred Rendering (TBDR) architecture.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> debuts on Mac just as CD Projekt Red releases the latest 2.3 patch for the game, which includes additional cars and new photo mode features. The game will support cross progression across all platforms and includes the <em>Phantom Liberty</em> expansion and all of the major updates to the game so far.
</p>

	<em>Here, we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And, of course, you may find a word or two about older versions.</em>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The July 2025 Patch Tuesday updates arrived this week, bringing the latest fixes and security improvements to supported operating systems. Windows 11 received <a automate_uuid="e2704f97-a14d-43ab-b8f6-3afafdbeafb6" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5062553-kb5062552-july-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5062553 and KB5062552</a>, while Windows 10 received <a automate_uuid="9fd27b74-f6b3-4441-a1c5-35707dbdce42" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5062554--kb5062557--kb5062560--kb5062561-july-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5062554</a>. Besides security patches, these updates <a automate_uuid="a32b0cdd-f781-4f52-8e3d-86ff2e9221a7" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/latest-windows-11-patch-tuesday-fixes-firewall-issue/" rel="external nofollow">fixed problems with Windows Firewall</a>.

<p>
	In addition to Patch Tuesday updates, <a automate_uuid="71b79dea-5882-4a58-acef-bc90d5ac322f" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/more-windows-pcs-can-now-apply-updates-with-fewer-restarts/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft launched Windows Hotpatching</a> for ARM-based PC, allowing more users to install critical security updates without restarts, and <a automate_uuid="76958b4f-da4c-4a84-8c34-5e5569a6c993" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5062785-kb5062683-kb5062688-kb5062693-setup-recovery-updates-released/" rel="external nofollow">released new recovery updates</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The upcoming Windows 11 version 25H2, which was confirmed by Microsoft a couple of weeks ago, will bring <a automate_uuid="5b585d4b-a8b9-4df5-811f-d9aa9a73d0dc" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-25h2-native-option-could-allow-you-to-remove-default-microsoft-apps/" rel="external nofollow">more ways to uninstall stock applications</a> bundled with the operating system.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This week, Usama Jawad published a small editorial where he <a automate_uuid="38e72d7b-d3a0-4a61-a3d3-7b78977af0d9" href="https://www.neowin.net/editorials/with-microsoft-ending-support-for-windows-10-i-am-sad-we-never-got-this-windows-11-feature/" rel="external nofollow">shared his thoughts</a> about one Windows 11 feature that he misses when using Windows 10. That feature might not be what you think.

</p>

<p>
	We also had a bunch of useful articles for Windows 11 users. For example, here is <a automate_uuid="ed35328a-6632-43b9-b10b-ca6701ab1114" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/clean-vs-dirty-windows-11-performance-was-benchmarked-results-may-surprise-you/" rel="external nofollow">an interesting performance comparison</a> between a fresh and an old Windows 11 installation. It answers the question of whether performance degrades over months as the operating system becomes more cluttered. The result might surprise you. Also, check out this article with an overview of <a automate_uuid="8e8284ff-e0aa-4131-aa69-88f77e4bf2be" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/this-is-the-data-windows-collects-about-you/" rel="external nofollow">all the data Windows 11 collects</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By the way, if you plan to reinstall Windows 11, beware of third-party apps. Using some of them could result <a automate_uuid="4d0555b0-b0fb-4325-9d53-cdcc8629d0b3" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/unofficial-windows-reinstaller-app-locks-you-out-of-your-windows-11-pc-until-you-pay/" rel="external nofollow">in rather unpleasant results</a>.

<p>
	This week, we published <a automate_uuid="bf4bc812-ba8b-4f68-a5f2-64d7cd1ccf71" href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/8849-tankpad-review-rugged-tablet-with-5g-insane-battery-and-a-projector/" rel="external nofollow">a review of the 8849 TankPad</a>, a rugged tablet with 5G, serious protection, a built-in projector, plenty of storage, and more. If you are in the market for a rugged tablet, this one is a very good option to consider at just $599.99. It is not perfect, of course, but it is very good at its main job of being tough and delivering fantastic battery life for outdoor use.

It is a fantastic low-profile computer with only a few minor annoyances that you can overlook, considering the cost and performance you get out of it.

The studio published a new blog post, explaining that despite receiving positive feedback from closed playtests about the environment, creatures, and storyline of the sequel, it had realized that some areas needed more work before the public community is given access.
