			Legendary programming Q&amp;A site Stack Overflow is being acquired by Prosus N.V., Europe's largest tech investment firm. According to a <a href="https://www.prosus.com/news/prosus-to-acquire-stack-overflow-for-us18-billion/" rel="external nofollow">press release</a> on Prosus' website, the two companies entered into a definitive acquisition agreement yesterday.

			According to Amazon Alexa web <a href="https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/stackoverflow.com#section_traffic" rel="external nofollow">analytics</a>, Stack Overflow is the 46th most heavily engaged site in the world. Since 2008, the site has served as the first stop for developers searching for answers to their programming-related questions—and eventually, their non-programming-related questions, as the Stack Exchange network of sites expanded into <a href="https://stackexchange.com/sites" rel="external nofollow">categories</a> including culture, recreation, arts, science, business, and more.

			Prosus will likely be much less familiar, particularly to Americans, as the Amsterdam-listed investment firm has a much lower public profile. Although based in Europe, Prosus invests internationally; for example, it has the largest single stake in Chinese gaming and social media company Tencent.

			In 2001, Prosus' parent company <a href="https://www.naspers.com/about" rel="external nofollow">Naspers</a> bought a 46.5% interest in Tencent for only $34 million— but earlier this year, Prosus liquidated a 2% Tencent stake for $14.6 billion, retaining a 28.9% interest valued at roughly $200 billion. Prosus chairman Koos Bekker said the Tencent liquidation will "fund continued growth in Prosus' core business lines and emerging sectors" and create "some headroom for acquisitions."

			Stack Overflow co-founder Joel Spolsky <a href="https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2021/06/02/kinda-a-big-announcement/" rel="external nofollow">blogged</a> about the purchase, and Stack Overflow CEO Prasanth Chandrasekar wrote a more official <a href="https://stackoverflow.blog/2021/06/02/prosus-acquires-stack-overflow/" rel="external nofollow">announcement</a>. Both blog posts characterize the acquisition as having little to no impact on the day-to-day operation of Stack Overflow.

			"How you use our site and our products will not change in the coming weeks or months, just as our company’s goals and strategic priorities remain the same," Chandrasekar said.

			Spolsky went into more detail, saying that Stack Overflow will "continue to operate independently, with the exact same team in place that has been operating it, according to the exact same plan and the exact same business practices. Don't expect to see major changes or awkward 'synergies'... the entire company is staying in place: we just have different owners now."

				Samsung has announced two new Windows laptops running Arm-based processors. The Galaxy Book Go and Galaxy Book Go 5G both use Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm rather than Samsung’s own Exynos designs.

				The Galaxy Book Go is an entry-level model that starts at $349. It has the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/24/22451392/qualcomm-snapdragon-7c-gen-2-arm-processor" rel="external nofollow">updated Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 processor</a> that Qualcomm announced last month, as well as 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of eUFS storage. The display is a 14-inch 1080p LCD and the laptop is 14.9mm thick, weighing in at 1.38kg.

				The Galaxy Book Go 5G, meanwhile, uses Qualcomm’s more powerful <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/9/3/21409500/qualcomm-8cx-gen-2-5g-chips-arm-window-laptops-ifa-2020" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2</a> processor — though other laptops with that chip aren’t exactly powerhouses — and, as the name suggests, it includes 5G connectivity. Despite running on a Snapdragon chip with an integrated LTE modem, the $349 Galaxy Book Go is actually Wi-Fi-only.

Samsung hasn’t given pricing or release information for the Galaxy Book Go 5G just yet, but the $349 Galaxy Book Go is going on sale on June 10th.

		Samsung has <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-introduces-its-first-zns-ssd-with-maximized-user-capacity-and-enhanced-lifespan" rel="external nofollow">announced the launch of the 2.5-inch PM1731a</a> - its first solid-state drive that features Zoned Namespace (ZNS) technology.

		By making use of ZNS technology, the SSD will provide its users improved lifespan in cloud environments, data center, and storage server, and maximum available user capacity. ZNS will enable data to be grouped contingent on its access frequency and usage, and deposited in independent spaces within the SSD.

	<p>
		This storage device is notably capable of mitigating the number of write operations, which, in turn, reduces the writer amplification factor (WAF) of the drive. Samsung claims that this feature will increase the endurance up to fourfold as compared to conventional NVMe SSDs.

		The PM1731a is built on Samsung's sixth-generation V-NAND and will come in 4TB and 2TB models, with dual ports. Although prices and exact launch dates have not been announced yet, Samsung says that it plans to mass-produce ZNS SSDs in the second half of 2021.

		Hello Games <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/no-mans-sky-expeditions-update-offers-a-fresh-start-for-players-to-journey-together/" rel="external nofollow">has been updating</a> its space exploration and adventure game No Man's Sky with fresh content for almost half a decade now, and it is not done yet. The latest update, dubbed Prisms, is aimed towards dramatically increasing the game's visual fidelity while also adding the ability to adopt and ride flying creatures.

		The visual improvements come from the addition of screen space reflections for higher quality reflective surfaces, alongside enhanced volumetric lighting, light refractions, as well as rain and weather density improvements, among other effects. There is now even an advanced photo mode to take the new graphics for a spin.

	<p>
		There are also new audio and visual effects for warp travel, more alien looking subterranean biomes, a huge increase to the number of stars that can be seen across the sky, and – as <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/rtx-updates-head-to-doom-eternal-red-dead-redemption-2-and-more" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia announced earlier this week</a> – DLSS support. Fur rendering is also in for the first time, giving appropriate creatures the all-important fuzzy look.

Old-generation consoles are also missing out on the planetary detail improvements this update carries. Meanwhile, Xbox One S and PSVR platforms aren't getting the new fur rendering

	Yesterday at Computex 2021, AMD CEO Lisa Su showed off the company's next big performance play—3D stacked chiplets, allowing the company to triple the amount of L3 cache on its flagship Zen 3 CPUs.

	The technology is just what it sounds like—a layer of SRAM cache sitting atop the Complex Core Die (CCD) of the CPU itself. Current Zen 3 architecture integrates 32MiB of L3 cache per eight-core chiplet—making 64MiB total for a 12- or 16-core chiplet like the Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X. The new technology adds an additional 64MiB L3 cache on top of each chiplet's CCD, bonded with through-silicon vias (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Through-silicon_via" rel="external nofollow">TSV</a>s).

	The additional 64MiB L3 cache layer does not extend the width of the CCD, resulting in a need for structural silicon to balance pressure from the CPU cooling system. Compute and cache dies are both thinned in the new design, allowing it to share substrate and heat spreader technology with current Ryzen 5000 processors.

	Tripling the L3 cache on Ryzen 5000 allows performance gains under some workloads—particularly archive compression/decompression and gaming—similar to those seen with entire new CPU generations. AMD demonstrated performance uplift via a <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/09/gears-5-review-an-obvious-gaming-recommendation-if-you-already-paid-for-it/" rel="external nofollow">Gears of War 5</a> demo. Paired with an unspecified GPU and with clock speed fixed at 4 GHz, a current-model 5900X system achieved 184 fps—while the triple-cached prototype managed 206 fps, a gain of roughly 12 percent.

	AMD claims an average of 15 percent improved gaming performance with the new technology, ranging from a low of 4 percent for <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tag/league-of-legends/" rel="external nofollow">League of Legends</a> to a high of 25 percent for <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/06/monster-hunter-world/" rel="external nofollow">Monster Hunter: World</a>. This performance improvement requires neither smaller process node nor increased clock speed—which is especially interesting, in an era where clock speeds have largely hit a wall, and a physics-determined end to process-node shrink seems to be on the horizon as well.

	Anandtech's Ian Cutress notes that AMD's new 3D chiplet stacking process is <a href="https://www.anandtech.com/show/16725/amd-demonstrates-stacked-vcache-technology-2-tbsec-for-15-gaming" rel="external nofollow">clearly</a> TSMC's SoIC Chip-on-Wafer <a href="https://www.tsmc.com/english/news-events/blog-article-20200803" rel="external nofollow">technology</a> in action. While AMD is—at least so far—limiting itself to two layers, TSMC has demonstrated a full 12 layers in action. The problem here is thermal—adding RAM is a near-ideal use of the technology, since the additional silicon doesn't generate much in the way of additional heat. Stacking CPU on CPU would be far more problematic.

	AMD states that the redesigned 5900X will enter production later this year—well before Zen 4's scheduled launch in 2022. For now, AMD is focusing on the new technology for "high-end Ryzen" CPUs only—no mention was made of Epyc, and the additional silicon required for the added cache makes it a likely nonstarter for budget processors, given current materials shortages.

		At Computex today, as the company <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-teases-a-geforce-event-for-may-31-rtx-3080-ti-and-3070-ti-launches-expected/" rel="external nofollow">had promised</a>, Nvidia has announced its newest GeForce RTX offerings, the RTX 3080 Ti and the RTX 3070 Ti GPUs. The former will be available to purchase worldwide in a couple of days on June 3 and it is priced at $1,199, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-12gb-reportedly-priced-at-999-launch-in-may/" rel="external nofollow">which is 20% higher than what rumors had earlier suggested</a>.

		For this asking price, the new RTX 3080 Ti, Nvidia says, delivers twice the performance of the GTX 1080 Ti even in traditional rasterization situations. The gap naturally extends further when newer technologies like DLSS or real-time ray tracing are added into the mix.

		Moving on, the 3080 Ti's smaller sibling the RTX 3070 Ti is a much more affordable product coming in for half the price of the former at $599. It will be available for purchase next week. Similar to the performance claims of the 3080 Ti, Nvidia says that the new RTX 3070 Ti offers double the performance of the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. It is also said to offer around 50% more performance than the RTX 2070 SUPER.

		AMD made some news last night during its <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/news/computex-2021" rel="external nofollow">Computex 2021</a> keynote address when AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su showed off the company's new 3D chiplet technology, developed in partnership with TSMC.

		The long and short of it is that rather than spread itself out over a wider die, CPU components like the logic unit and cache memory are stacked on top of each other, utilizing vertical space rather than growing the total surface area of the chip in a flat wafer.

		While the technology is primarily being pioneered by TSMC, AMD looks to be the first chipmaker to take advantage of the new process by introducing new "vertical L3 cache" to its Ryzen series processors.

		Without getting bogged down too much in computer system architecture, cache memory is the part of the processor that stores the most relevant data and program instructions for the processor at any given time. The larger the cache, the more data can be stored there so the processor doesn't have to fetch new data from RAM, which takes longer and slows down performance.

		According to Su, by stacking a 64MB SRAM node onto the CCD (the part of the processor that contains a collection of processing cores), AMD is able to triple the available L3 cache on a 16-core processor from a maximum of 64MB to 192MB.

		This change alone gave AMD's prototype, a Ryzen 9 5900X processor using the new 3D v-cache tech, a roughly 12% performance boost during a demo of Gear of War 5. This kind of performance increase is typically what you see between processor generations, so boosting the performance of an existing processor by 12% using just a 3D chiplet design is pretty impressive.

		And while this technology hasn't made its way into a consumer processor yet, <a data-component-tracked="1" data-url="https://www.amd.com/en/press-releases/2021-05-31-amd-showcases-industry-leading-innovation-across-the-high-performance" href="https://www.amd.com/en/press-releases/2021-05-31-amd-showcases-industry-leading-innovation-across-the-high-performance" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">AMD says</a> that it "is on-track to begin production on future high-end computing products with 3D chiplets by the end of this year."

	<h2 id="are-amd-apos-s-3d-chiplets-the-future-of-processors">
		Are AMD's 3D chiplets the future of processors?
	</h2>

	<p>
		Without getting too deep in the weeds of <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/news/computexs-existential-crisis-life-after-moores-law" rel="external nofollow">Moore's Law</a>, the writing has been on the wall for the assumption that our computers would get progressively faster for more than a decade now. We can no longer rely on the brute-force engineering of smaller and smaller transistors to make our computers more and more powerful. We are approaching the literal physical limit of how small these transistors can be before individual silicon atoms start becoming unreliable mediums for electrical current.
	</p>

		So while we've pretty come to the end of the easy way to fabricate increasingly powerful computers, this doesn't mean the end of progress as we know it. We'll continue to shrink transistors for years to come, but the next phase is moving beyond the transistor and innovating new processor technology that we haven't even considered yet – and 3D fabrication is the obvious next step.

		We've long realized that when you run out of physical space and you need to squeeze in more of something, whether that means transistors, inventory, or even people, start moving upward rather than outward. All you need to do is look at a city skyline or an IKEA warehouse to see this in practice.

		AMD's new 3D V-Cache is just the <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/news/amd-turns-to-chiplets-as-moores-law-slows" rel="external nofollow">first implementation of many</a> to move in this direction – literally. Expanding the cache available for existing processor architecture is already giving a serious boost to performance, but there's no reason why we can't just start stacking cores as well.

		After around a year of teasing that it's coming, AMD has finally confirmed that its FidelityFX Super Resolution tech is coming on June 22. 
	</p>

		AMD made the announcement as part of its <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/news/computex-2021" rel="external nofollow">Computex 2021</a> keynote, and it looks to deliver a similar performance boost to Nvidia's DLSS (deep learning super sampling) technology. However, unlike Nvidia's upscaling tech, FidelityFX Super Resolution will work on any recent <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/best-graphics-cards-1291458" rel="external nofollow">graphics card</a>, as AMD has demonstrated the tech working on an <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/graphics-cards/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-1325075/review" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060</a> in GodFall. 
	</p>

		AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, based on Team Red's own claims, should provide a up to a whopping 2x performance jump on AMD graphics cards using the Quality mode of Super Resolution, and up to a 2x performance boost in its Performance mode. These numbers come from GodFall at 4K with ray tracing on an <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.techradar.com/reviews/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt" rel="external nofollow">AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT</a>, so it's not clear if these numbers will change at all on other graphics cards.

		AMD does share some brief information about the technology working with its competitor's graphics cards, but not the same breakdown we see for the 6800 XT. Also in Godfall, but at 1440p, AMD claims that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 can go from 27 fps to 38 fps at 1440p, using the Epic Preset and FidelityFX Super Resolution with its Quality mode. That's not the same 2x performance jump that AMD's own card boasts, but that's still a 41% performance jump.

		We'll have to see for ourselves how this technology fares once we can get our hands on it for some more in-depth testing on June 22. But for right now, just based on AMD's own claims, this technology is looking extremely promising.

				AMD has announced its long-awaited Radeon RX 6000M series of mobile GPUs, featuring its RDNA 2 architecture.

				Today’s release consists of three chips: the RX 6800M (configurable at 145W and above), the RX 6700M (up to 135W), and the RX 6600M (up to 100W). AMD says the flagship 6800M delivers the fastest AMD graphics for laptops yet; it claims the 6800M will run modern AAA games at frame rates that are comparable to or better than those of Nvidia’s mobile RTX 3080. It’s also purported to outperform Nvidia’s chip while gaming on battery.

				AMD says the RX 6700M will deliver up to 100fps “in popular games” at 1440p resolution. The 6600M is better for “epic 1080p gaming.” Keep an eye out for independent reviews of these chips in the coming weeks for better idea of the performance you can expect from each one.

				AMD also announced AMD Advantage, a new “design framework initiative” meant to encourage OEMs to include certain features on their AMD-powered systems, and to indicate to consumers which Ryzen- and Radeon-powered laptops AMD thinks are the best. It appears to be a similar idea to Intel’s Evo program, but it’s just for gaming laptops, and the standards look much more stringent. It AMD Advantage laptops are expected to include the following:

				It’s unclear how many laptops will actually meet all of these standards. Forty degrees Celsius is close to as hot as keyboards commonly get in the center. But there aren’t too many gaming rigs that reliably break 10 hours of video playback on battery, and plenty of the best gaming laptops out there max out below 300 nits of brightness. That said, all kinds of Intel Evo-certified laptops also don’t meet all the Evo requirements in my testing — units and methodologies can vary.

				The first AMD Advantage laptop to be announced is Asus’ new ROG Strix G15. This can be configured with up to a Ryzen 9 5900Hx, a Radeon RX 6800M, and a 15-inch WQHD 165Hz display with 3ms response time. The G15 will be available at Best Buy in June.

		Today motherboard vendor ASRock has launched its new Phantom Gaming (PG) Riptide Socket AM4 motherboards for the AMD Ryzen platform. The new PG Riptide boards come in two flavors, the new AMD X570S chipset as well as a new variant of the previously launched B550 chipset. For those unaware, the new X570S is set to introduce <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/msis-upcoming-x570s-motherboard-lineup-allegedly-leaked-over-half-a-dozen-models/" rel="external nofollow">a fanless, silent flagship chipset</a> for the Ryzen platform, unlike the previous X570.

		Among the several features that the new motherboards bring, one of the coolest technologies is the inclusion of ASRock's proprietary graphics card holder that will come bundled with the new PG Riptide X570S and B550 boards. The firm had launched this innovative piece of hardware when it launched its Intel Z590 based motherboards.

	<p>
		As graphics card designs get fancier and heavier, motherboard vendors have started adding sturdier, more metallic PCIe slots from stopping the GPUs from sagging. This new device by ASRock also appears to be solving this issue. Its patent, however, is still pending. Below we have a small demo from the company showing how the graphics card holder works:

	Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) have graduated to Internet Engineering Task Force’s standards track.

	The <a href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc9000" rel="external nofollow">QUIC spec</a>, aka RFC 9000, appeared on May 27th, marking the end of the beginning for a story that started in 2013 when Google <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2013/07/10/http_20_ietf_draft_lands/" rel="external nofollow">revealed</a> it was playing with QUIC, which it then described as "an early-stage network protocol we are experimenting with that runs a stream multiplexing protocol over a new flavor of Transport Layer Security (TLS) on top of UDP instead of TCP."
</p>

	QUIC’s best trick is to allow a client and server to send data, even if they have never connected. Cutting out the extra round trips needed to establish a TCP link means less traffic and faster connections. That’s especially welcome on wireless networks, which are nearly always shared and see contention for resources. Just in case you haven’t noticed, there’s about three billion wireless devices out there on cellular networks, so anything that makes networks behave better for them is welcome by users, network operators, content providers, and plenty of other stakeholders.
</p>

	Internet-grooming company Cloudflare liked QUIC so much it’s offered it as a service for a few years now. Microsoft has used QUIC to carry SMB traffic and <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2020/11/02/windows_server_futures/" rel="external nofollow">proclaimed</a> it “the future of distributed systems.” True to form, Microsoft has also <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2020/05/04/microsoft_reveals_msquic_quic_implementation/" rel="external nofollow">created its own version of QUIC</a> and open-sourced it.
</p>

	Google’s already <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2019/09/26/quic_head_to_the_latest_chrome_version_and_try_out_http3/" rel="external nofollow">baked QUIC into its Chrome browser</a> and that gives it a presence on hundreds of millions of devices.

	But QUIC has not been widely adopted elsewhere. A Cloudflare <a href="https://blog.cloudflare.com/quic-version-1-is-live-on-cloudflare/" rel="external nofollow">post</a> celebrating QUIC’s ascension to the standard track says it can detect “around 12% of Internet traffic using QUIC with HTTP/3”.

	QUIC’s new status has seen Cloudflare take its QUIC service out of beta and offer it to all comers, in the hope of making it more prevalent.

	It’s hard to argue against anything that speeds networks. But be careful what you wish for, because in January 2021 networking boffins <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2021/01/30/quic_fingerprinting_flaw/" rel="external nofollow">rated</a> QUIC as more vulnerable to web fingerprinting than HTTPS, a technology QUIC was intended to supplant. ®

		Ahead of this year's virtual Computex event, Intel has announced the first 5G product to come from its partnership with MediaTek, which it announced in late 2019. The Intel 5G Solution 5000 is an M.2 5G system for laptops, which allows OEMs to more easily come up with 5G designs, using a standardized interface.

	<p>
		The Intel 5G Solution 5000 comes with support for sub-6GHz 5G, and there's no mmWave support. It can also connect to 4G LTE and 3G WCDMA. The product has been carrier certified in most major regions around the world, so laptops that adopt this solution can be sold in most markets. It's also supported by Windows, Chrome OS, and Linux.

		MediaTek had begun sampling the first Intel 5G solution, based on the T700 modem, last summer, and the two companies also worked with Fibocom, which helped with carrier certification and regulatory support. Fibocom also handles manufacturing, sales, and distribution of the 5G M.2 modules.

		Of course, while using the M.2 format reduces some of the complexity of implementing 5G in a laptop, it's not as simple as inserting this solution in an M.2 slot on any laptop. The devices still need antennas for cellular reception.

		Despite its early announcement of the collaboration with MediaTek all the way back in 2019, Intel ended up being sucker-punched by Qualcomm, which announced <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/qualcomm-announces-m2-reference-designs-and-new-features-for-its-5g-modems" rel="external nofollow">its own 5G M.2 reference designs</a> about a week ago, based on the Snapdragon X62 and X65 modems.

		The first designs with Intel's 5G Solution 5000 will be available this year with manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, and HP among the first to use in their designs. Next year, we should see over 30 designs that include the solution.

		This year's Computex virtual event officially starts tomorrow, but Intel is getting the ball rolling with a couple of major announcements today. The company is adding two new processors to its Tiger lake family, specifically in the U-series range, meant for thin-and-light laptops.

	<p>
		First and foremost, there's the new Intel Core i7-1195G7, which is Intel's first U-series processor capable of boosting all the way up to 5GHz. In fact, it's the industry's first 5GHz CPU for thin-and-light laptops, according to Intel. We've seen Intel gradually push more of its processors to 5GHz, starting with its<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/intel-announces-its-core-i7-8086k-chip-along-with-amber-lake-and-whiskey-lake-cpus/" rel="external nofollow"> first 5GHz desktop CPU in 2018</a>, and laptops<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/intel-announces-9th-gen-h-series-cpus-including-an-8-core-5ghz-core-i9-for-laptops" rel="external nofollow"> got their first 5GHz CPU in 2019</a> with the Core i9-9980HK.

		Naturally, this is a single-core boost clock with Intel Turbo Boost Max technology, but the maximum all-core turbo is 4.6GHz, which is still impressive. Meanwhile, the integrated Iris Xe GPU can also boost slightly higher, at up to 1.4GHz.

		As you can see above, Intel compared the Core i7-1195G7 to AMD's Ryzen 7 5800U in both gaming and content creation, showing off higher performance across the board.

		The other new CPU is the Core i5-1155G7, which is now the fastest U-series Core i5 model. It can boost up to 4.5GHz on a single CPU core or 4.3GHz on all cores, and the GPU can boost up to 1.35GHz.

We should see over 60 new consumer PC designs based on these two processors by this holiday season, and the first laptops with them should be coming from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI this summer.

		MSI is set to hold a new event dubbed "Tech meets Aesthetic" in a couple of days on June 1st. The company has unveiled this information with the help of <a href="https://www.msi.com/Landing/productlaunch2021" rel="external nofollow">a new event page on its website</a>. The event seems to be coinciding with this year's Computex and will be streamed live on YouTube at 00:00 PDT on its 'MSI Gaming' YouTube channel.

		At the event, the company will reportedly be launching, among others, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/msis-upcoming-x570s-motherboard-lineup-allegedly-leaked-over-half-a-dozen-models/" rel="external nofollow">its recently leaked AMD X570S chipset-based motherboards</a>. In fact, today a couple of alleged pictures of two such models have surfaced from a Chinese forum 'NGA'. The two models in question here are the MAG X570S TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI (image on the left) and the MAG X570S TORPEDO MAX (on the right).

		Alongside this, MSI is reportedly also preparing an all-new graphics model called the SUPRIM 35th Anniversary Edition. The image of this was apparently listed by MSI previously but has since been removed. The company was founded in the year 1986 so a special 35th Anniversary product in 2021 does make sense. 		The last full week of May brought us Microsoft’s Build conference, a date for the Xbox and Bethesda E3 event, and a tease for what Satya Nadella calls “one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade”. You can find info about that, as well as much more below, in your Microsoft digest for the week of May 23 - 29.
	</p>

	<h3>
		Build 2021
	</h3>

		Microsoft held its annual Build conference as usual, at the end of May, and to perhaps nobody’s surprise, it was more focused on Azure and developer tools than Build from say, 2011.

	<p>
		In terms of announcements, there’s the fact that you can <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/you-can-now-run-linux-gui-apps-in-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">run Linux GUI apps on Windows</a>, a feature which isn’t quite GA yet – despite Microsoft’s wording -, and which has been available to Insiders for quite a while. Naturally, it’s still confined to Insider builds for now.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		As far as enhancements go, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-search-is-getting-new-capabilities-thanks-to-microsoft-graph/" rel="external nofollow">the Microsoft Graph has gotten a boost in capabilities</a>, with new search features for orgs, the introduction of a unified search tool for enterprise called Microsoft Search Federation – which brings together Microsoft Search proper and Azure Cognitive Search -, and much more.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		On the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/power-automate-and-power-apps-get-new-tools-and-insights/" rel="external nofollow">Power Platform side</a>, Power Automate and Power Apps have gotten enhancements of their own, from the GA of a new process mining mechanism – dubbed Process Advisor -, to the ability to provide additional insights and even a new stand-alone Power App Developer plan.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Power BI itself gained the ability to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/power-bi-introduces-a-bunch-of-new-additions-and-improvements-at-build-2021/" rel="external nofollow">embed Power BI analytics reports in Jupyter Notebooks</a> (in preview), Power BI Premium got a set of Automation APIs meant to ease the creation of development pipelines making use of Azure DevOps, Azure Pipeline, and other similar tools.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Going back to the Power Platform for a bit, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/low-code-updates-in-power-platform-arriving-soon/" rel="external nofollow">some low-code updates have been unveiled too</a>, with Power Virtual Agent offering an improved experience when building chatbots, and the introduction of event-driven dynamic dialogs to handle context switching. Sticking to low-code, Power Fx, Microsoft’s low-code programming language is <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-power-fx-now-leverages-gpt-3-to-allow-users-to-build-apps-without-coding/" rel="external nofollow">now able to leverage OpenAI’s GPT-3 model</a>.
	</p>

	<p>
		In terms of other dev-relevant announcements, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-build-of-openjdk-is-now-generally-available/" rel="external nofollow">OpenJDK has now reached its GA phase</a>, and support for Apple Silicon was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/support-for-apple-silicon-has-been-added-in-net-6-preview-4-available-now/" rel="external nofollow">added to .NET 6 Preview 4</a>.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		It wouldn’t be a Microsoft conference without <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-announces-pytorch-enterprise-for-azure-and-spark-enhancements-for-synapse/" rel="external nofollow">at least some mention of Azure</a>, and that was indeed the case with this year's Build as well. For one, there’s the preview of Azure Machine Learning managed endpoints, the GA of Document Translation (in Azure Cognitive Services), PostgreSQL and MySQL data governance support in Azure Purview via Azure Database, and so much more.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		And to expand on its sensitive data storing capabilities, Microsoft also announced <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/azure-confidential-ledger-is-microsofts-latest-offering-for-storing-sensitive-data/" rel="external nofollow">Azure Confidential Ledger</a>, a new managed service – currently in preview -, which the company says is the only one on the market powered by confidential computing via a Trusted Execution Environment. Additionally, the Redmond giant states the service is tamper-proof.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To wrap things up with other statements from the Redmond firm, Microsoft says that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-says-edge-91-will-be-the-best-performing-browser-on-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">Edge 91 will be the best-performing browser on Windows 10</a>, thanks to its startup boost feature (which loads some core Edge processes in the background), and sleeping tabs, allowing folks to save up to “82% of memory usage” by putting inactive tabs to sleep. This feature is of course, configurable.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Additionally, there are improvements and new features for Windows Terminal 1.9, namely its preview variant, which now supports something called <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/heres-whats-new-in-windows-terminal-preview-19/" rel="external nofollow">Quake Mode</a>. By pressing Win + `, you can bring up the quake window on the top half of the screen, bypassing the need to search for Terminal in the Start Menu or click a pinned taskbar icon. You do need to be on a Dev channel build for this to work though.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		And speaking of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/these-are-all-the-features-added-to-teams-in-may/" rel="external nofollow">added features</a>, Teams, the company’s ‘chat-based workspace’ solution, added support for new viewing modes, the ability to set break room timers, search support for the participant list, an expansion of calling plans, group chats with up to 250 users from different organizations, and so much more.
	</p>

		Microsoft also <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-announces-a-ton-of-new-teams-features/" rel="external nofollow">announced features like Together mode extensibility</a>, a unified method to build extensions for Outlook and Teams, a new Developer portal for Teams, and other features, either in preview or coming soon.
	</p>

		A combo showcase
	</h3>

		Last week, there was confirmation that Xbox and Bethesda will be holding a joint E3 showcase, though no more details were revealed at that point. This week, Xbox Marketing head Aaron Greenberg penned an article on Xbox Wire, revealing that the Xbox &amp; Bethesda Games Showcase <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/xbox-and-bethesda-games-showcase-set-for-sunday-june-13/" rel="external nofollow">is set for June 13 at 10AM PT</a> (that’s 1PM ET, or 6PM BST). Lasting about 90 minutes (which isn’t too dissimilar from previous years’ runtimes), the event will highlight everything Xbox, ranging from Bethesda’s inclusion in the ecosystem, to new Xbox games, and more Game Pass experiences.

		That said, we’re still a couple of weeks away from the event, so it’s worth mentioning that Xbox consoles <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/xbox-consoles-get-dolby-vision-on-apple-tv-video-podcasts-on-spotify-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">have gotten Dolby Vision support on Apple TV</a>, video podcasts on Spotify, and other enhancements. The Games with Gold for June have also been announced, with The King’s Bird and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/june-games-with-gold-to-bring-injustice-the-kings-bird-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">already being available to claim</a>. Shadows: Awakening and Injustice: Gods Among Us will be claimable later in the month.

		If the above titles don’t quite grab your attention, there are always the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/xbox-deals-with-gold-feature-resident-evil-the-surge-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">Deals with Gold to peruse</a>, or maybe even the massive Flight Simulator patch <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/massive-flight-simulator-patch-brings-a-ton-of-fixes-and-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">that just dropped</a> to check out. If you own the game, you’ll want to download this, as it brings a laundry list of fixes and improvements to the sim game, dropping the install size from a hefty 170GB, to 83GB.

		At its Build conference this year, Microsoft dedicated a tiny sliver of the runtime to one of the more mature products in its portfolio, Windows.

		CEO Satya Nadella stated during a brief segment dedicated to the homegrown OS that he’s been self-hosting it for months and that he’s “<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/satya-nadella-says-hes-incredibly-excited-about-the-next-generation-of-windows/" rel="external nofollow">incredibly excited for the next-generation of Windows</a>”. He may not be pumped - something you’d hear Panos Panay say -, but he did underline that this is ”one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade”. All rumors point to an event in June, when the company will likely unveil its UI refresh, currently codenamed Sun Valley.

		Until then though, there’s build 21390 from the Dev channel, which now sports <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-rolls-out-windows-10-build-21390-in-the-dev-channel-with-new-icons/" rel="external nofollow">new icons for the Task Manager and the .msi installer files</a>, as well as build 19043.1023, which <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-windows-10-build-190431023-with-news-and-interests/" rel="external nofollow">brings the News and interests taskbar feature to everybody</a>. Of course, if you’re not a fan of it, there’s always the option to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/how-to-turn-off-the-news-and-interest-widget-on-taskbar-in-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">turn it off</a>.

	Amazon plans to enroll many of its hardware devices that are operated in the United States, including many Echo devices and Ring Spotlight and Floodlight Cams, into its Amazon Sidewalk system on June 8, 2021.

	Amazon Sidewalk is a shared network. According to Amazon, it is used to make devices work better, e.g. by extending the working range of devices, keeping devices running even if outside the range of the wireless network of the home, or finding pets.

	One of the ideas behind Sidewalk is that devices may continue to operate even if they lose access to the local wireless network; this works best in neighborhoods with lots of Amazon devices in the vicinity that all share some of their bandwidth.

	Another key element of Amazon Sidewalk is that it creates a network for roaming devices, e.g. devices similar to Apple AirTags, that Amazon could utilize to provide the functionality.

There is also a release date attached to the action game again, finally letting players parkour their way over zombies in Dying Light 2 – now with the tagline Stay Human – on December 7.

		The trailer gives a good rundown of the setting, overall storyline, and the tools available for surviving the hostile, post-apocalyptic world. The story is set 20 years after the events of Dying Light, and the developer says playing the original is not a requirement for jumping into the sequel. Cooperative play also returns as a feature, with the upcoming title offering four-player co-op across the full campaign.

	After years of work, <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2021/04/13/epic-games-raises-1-billlion-to-fund-long-term-metaverse-plans/" rel="external nofollow">Epic Games</a> is launching early access for game developers for <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2020/05/13/how-epic-games-is-tailoring-unreal-engine-5-to-make-next-gen-graphics-shine/" rel="external nofollow">Unreal Engine 5</a>, the latest version of the company’s tools for making games with highly realistic 3D animations. And to show it off, Epic Games released an amazing video that displays how the engine could render a game space that faithfully reproduced a huge area of the red rock formations of Moab, Utah.

	Epic is no doubt pleased to be talking about something other than its <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2021/05/21/apple-v-epic-trial-wraps-up-as-judge-spars-with-tim-cook/" rel="external nofollow">three-week antitrust trial against Apple</a> that just wrapped up on Monday. And while the company creates a lot of fun with Fortnite, the Unreal Engine goes back to the geeky roots of Epic and its CEO Tim Sweeney, who is one of the world’s graphics gurus. Founded in 1991, Epic now has 3,200 employees and the company is once again free to tout how it innovates in the gaming market.

	And the <a href="http://www.unrealengine.com/ue5" rel="external nofollow">Unreal Engine 5</a>, which will officially ship in 2022, is the company’s crowning technical achievement. The early access build will let game developers start testing features and prototyping their upcoming games. Epic isn’t saying how long this took or how many employees are working on it, but it’s a safe bet that a large chunk of those devs are involved in Unreal Engine 5. It’s been seven years since the last engine shipped.

	Unreal Engine 5 will deliver the freedom, fidelity, and flexibility to create next-generation games that will blow players’ minds, said Nick Penwarden, the vice president of engineering, in an interview with GamesBeat.

	He said it will be effortless for game developers to use groundbreaking new features such as Nanite and Lumen, which provide a generational leap in visual fidelity. The new World Partition system enables the creation of expansive worlds with scalable content.

	As it always does, Epic will battle-test the engine in-house, as it prepares to ship Fortnite on UE5 across all platforms down the line. Epic said it will empower creators across all industries to deliver stunning real-time content and experiences. The early access build has only been tested on game development workflows and offers a chance for game developers to go hands-on with some of the new features.

	Additional features and other improvements for all industries will be part of the full Unreal Engine 5.0 release in early 2022. The current tech is not yet production ready.

	Developers can also download the new sample project, Valley of the Ancient, to start exploring the new features of UE5. Captured on an Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Valley of the Ancient is a rich and practical example of how the new features included with Unreal Engine 5 early access can be used, and is the result of internal stress-testing.

	The demo features a woman named Echo in a deserted mountain area. The team from Quixel, <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2019/11/12/epic-games-acquires-photogrammetry-startup-quixel-to-make-games-more-realistic/" rel="external nofollow">which Epic acquired in 2019</a>, went out to Moab in Utah to scan tons of rock formations, using drones and cameras. And the artists who created the demo populated the scene with Megascans assets, as opposed to using anything procedural or traditional animation tools.
</p>

	“We wanted to see how we could populate pretty much everything with Nanite content using Megascans assets,” Ivey said.
</p>

	Chance Ivey, a senior technical designer on the project, walked me through a demo via a remote video. Even while viewing it remotely, I could see that it had massive amounts of detail, as Ivey could zoom in on a realistic rock and zoom out to show terrain that covered a couple of square kilometers of area. Ivey said the demo runs at 30 frames per second, which is slower than the fastest shooter games but is still realistic in its speed to the human eye. At some moments it can get up to 50 frames per second on a high-end machine.
</p>

	“We are targeting 30FPS on next-generation console hardware” at 4K output with the demo, said Penwarden. “We expect people to be targeting 60 frames per second. It’s really a choice of the the gaming content itself, what you want to target, and UE5 is absolutely capable of powering 60 frames per second experiences. We chose to, in this case, absolutely maximize visual quality. And so we targeted 30fps. But we’re absolutely going to support 60 frames per second experiences.”

	The visual quality was amazing, and so I asked Penwarden what was the trick to getting millions of polygons into a scene with rich details that moved fast in real time.

	“The trick is a lot of smart engineering that goes into the algorithms and techniques that we’re using,” Pendwarden said. “Nanite is able to make sure that we’re spending graphics cycles only on detail that you can actually see. As you are traversing the environment, it’s streaming data in and out. So we don’t need to pre populate memory with all of the triangles that you would potentially see. It’s very intelligently selecting which LODs [levels of detail] to render across the board in a very smooth and continuous manner so that so that we’re able to deliver that micro polygon detail in real time.”

	In the demo scene, the world is one large map, not a bunch of prefabricated parts that are put together. Yet artists can work on the partitions without interfering with each others’ work. Artists can load and work on only the sections of the world that they need. Echo has body motions that are captured and brought into the scene so she can fluidly vault over some pixels and walk like a human without looking so much like a robot.

	In the video, Echo runs into a giant robot creature called the Ancient, which was created completely inside the Unreal Engine by the Aaron Sims Creative Company. The creature is made out of Nanite meshes and 50 million polygons. Echo proceeds to attack it with a magical energy charge. She brings it down in a big pile of dust amid the Moab rocks. Sadly, Ivey confirms that Echo is just a demo character and the company isn’t building a game around her.

Nanite intelligently streams and processes only the detail you can perceive, largely removing poly count and draw call constraints, and eliminating time-consuming tasks such as baking details to normal maps and manually authoring levels of detail (LODs) —freeing creators up to concentrate on creativity.

With Lumen, indirect lighting adapts on the fly to changes to direct lighting or geometry, such as changing the sun’s angle with the time of day, turning on a flashlight, or opening an exterior door. This means creators no longer have to author lightmap UVs, wait for lightmaps to bake, or place reflection captures—they can simply create and edit lights inside the Unreal Editor and see the same final lighting as when the game is run on console.

Data Layers allow creators to create different variations of the same world—such as daytime and nighttime versions—as layers that exist in the same space.

	The revamped Unreal Editor provides an updated visual style, streamlined workflows, and optimized use of screen real estate, making it easier, faster, and more pleasing to use, Epic said. The demo video showed how artists can be looking at a scene in the Moab rock formations and insert black monoliths and other objects into the scene, without having to exit the scene or bring out another tool.

	“With UE5, we’ve tried to get rid of as much complexity in that workflow as possible,” Penwarden said. “That entire world was actually just one big map file. And the Unreal Engine 5 just takes that map file and it breaks it up into a grid of cells for the purposes of the Edit time. And then for runtime, it’s it dices it up into into streaming chunks, that then it streams in and out dynamically. And the the details of how we break it up can be can be set up to be optimal for the platform that you’re targeting, or platforms that you’re targeting. On the Edit time side, we don’t store everything in one big file or one file for the entire level. Rather, we store data at the granularity of the individual actors and objects that you’re placing in the map.”

	To free up more space for viewport interactions, Epic added the ability to easily summon and stow the Content Browser and to dock any editor tab to the collapsible sidebar. Creators can now quickly access frequently used properties in the Details panel with a new favoriting system, while the new Create button on the main toolbar lets them easily place Actors into the world.

	“An artist would be able to build an environment like this without writing code,” Penwarden said. “Depending on the complexity of the game, it is absolutely possible to build games entirely out of Blueprint that is possible today in UE4 and it will continue to be possible in UE5. As the scope and complexity of your project grows, then the native C++ APIs are there for developers to start working with and really expand on on what their game is. And of course, just like with Unreal Engine 4, developers will have access to the full source code of Unreal Engine 5.”

	The user interface is all visual, so artists don’t have to know how to code in order to create what they need to do.

	“We wanted the user interface to get out of the way,” Ivey said. “The artist or designer can be as close as they can to the actual work that they are doing. There are more and more tools that keep you close to the creation, you can work in this space, and when you do that, you have less iteration time and you’re able to focus more on creating. This leads to better outcomes. You have tools that let designers and artists work more closely together rather than having to bring in engineering.”

	One huge gain for productivity is being able to access so many photorealistic environment assets that artists can access without having to reinvent all of those things in a digital form.

However, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) just took a big step in that direction by massively upgrading the <a href="https://hothardware.com/news/heres-why-apple-ditch-lightning-connector-favor-usb-c" rel="external nofollow">USB-C specification</a> (version 2.1) to accommodate up to 240W of power. That is more than double the previous spec, which allowed for up to 100W.

		This is great for things like high performance gaming laptops, 4K monitors, and other devices that fall within the bounds of a 240W power envelope. Not everything does, of course—some of the more potent laptops on the market can blow right by 240W without batting an eye, like the <a href="https://hothardware.com/reviews/dell-alienware-area-51m-review-and-benchmarks" rel="external nofollow">Alienware Area-51m</a> with its dual power supplies (180W and 330W).

		Dual power supplies are definitely the exception, though, even among Dell's performance line. Case in point, <a href="https://hothardware.com/reviews/alienware-m15-ryzen-edition-r5-review" rel="external nofollow">Alienware's m15 Ryzen Edition R5</a> is a 240W laptop. And then there are laptops like the <a href="https://hothardware.com/reviews/asus-rog-zephyrus-g15-review" rel="external nofollow">ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15</a> with its Ryzen 9 5900HS processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, which sports a 200W power adapter. Both of those, as well as many others, could in theory be powered by a USB-C cable and charger.

	That’s the word <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/05/exclusive-valve-is-making-a-switch-like-portable-gaming-pc/" rel="external nofollow">from Ars Technica’s Sam Machkovech</a>, who claims to have multiple sources attesting that Valve has been working on such a device: a touchscreen, touchpad, button, trigger, and dual-joystick-equipped portable that’ll likely run Linux and an array of specially optimized Steam titles. It should have the ability to dock, a la Nintendo Switch, via a USB-C port, too. Ars suggests it could arrive as soon as the end of the year.

I’ve been testing an early version of the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2021/1/18/22237379/aya-neo-gpd-win-3-nintendo-switch-gaming-pc-handheld-specs-comparison" rel="external nofollow">Aya Neo</a> for months, and it’s been a great companion for Persona 4 Golden couch sessions.

The company had been privately testing the update with select users and has now begun rolling out the patch to everybody. The update addresses a huge number of bugs, issues, and aircraft behavior, making it a welcome one for users who have been experiencing problems.

		The company also mentioned that it has performed some optimization on the initial install, allowing the base game to reduce to 83GB in size, down from over 170GB. Additionally, the update brings improvements to navigation, weather, aircraft-related systems, devmode and documentation changes, and much more.

		The changes include fixes to icing issues that have been widely reported, live aircraft traffic fixes to improve the reliability, improvements to ATC phrases to match FAA standards, and much more. Lastly, the firm has listed a single known issue that impacts the simulator when in VR mode. There is also a possible workaround listed. Here is the known issue:

	It seems that Microsoft’s digital rights management decisions for the Xbox Series X are a serious cause for concern. According to a video from YouTuber and game developer <a href="https://youtu.be/9E983349p7Q" rel="external nofollow">Modern Vintage Gamer</a>, the Xbox Series X is unable to play games without connecting to Microsoft’s servers. He tried games off a disc like Rise of the Tomb Raider as well as Hitman 3 and both refused to work offline. While Microsoft recommends keeping your Xbox Series X as your ‘Home Console’ in its settings, it’s a solution that’s described as a ‘band-aid’ as it doesn’t seem to work with every game as it should.

	Native Xbox Series X physical games like Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition work fine. It installed off the disc and ran as it should offline. This should in theory mean that games that are solely for the Xbox Series X should work both offline and online. However with Microsoft’s focus on Smart Delivery, it means that the current crop of Xbox Series X discs that run on Xbox One as well are essentially coasters.

	All of this essentially means that you won’t be able to play your Xbox games when Microsoft decides to take its servers offline.

	Of late gamers are growing increasingly aware of what appears to be console companies exercising a near obscene amount of control over their games. Sony was taken to task for its heavy-handed policies regarding the <a href="https://in.ign.com/playstation-5-playstation-5/157655/feature/ps5-games-cbomb-sony-preservation-ps4-vita-ps3" rel="external nofollow">PS3, PS4, PSP, PS Vita</a>, and most recently, <a href="https://in.ign.com/playstation-5-playstation-5/159083/news/ps5-game-discs-vs-digital-cbomb-ps4-drm" rel="external nofollow">PS5</a>. Safe to say, Microsoft’s been no better in this respect.

The company has <a href="https://community.arm.com/developer/ip-products/processors/b/processors-ip-blog/posts/first-armv9-cpu-cores" rel="external nofollow">unveiled</a> a host of new Cortex CPUs (and companion Mali GPUs) that it hopes will power laptops, other computers and wearables in addition to the next wave of smartphones.

		The flagship is the ARM Cortex-X2, a CPU core meant to scale from "premium" smartphones to laptops. It reportedly offers a 30 percent performance boost over <a href="https://www.engadget.com/qualcomm-snapdragon-888-5g-gaming-cameras-150046640.html" rel="external nofollow">current high-end Android phones</a>, although ARM didn't provide more details.

		You'll also see gains for more mainstream uses. The Cortex-A710 is the first ARMv9 "big" core (meant for big.LITTLE chips) and is about 10 percent faster than the Cortex-A78 while delivering 30 percent greater efficiency. Cortex-A510, meanwhile, is the first new "LITTLE" high-efficiency core in four years and should offer 35 percent better overall performance and triple the speed for machine learning. ARM claims the A510 is nearly as fast as high-performance chips from a few years ago, making it a viable option for watches and smart home tech in addition to lower-end phones.

		ARM is finally dragging the rest of the industry into the 64-bit era, too. It's promising that all "big" and "LITTLE" cores will be 64-bit by 2023, and its partners are helping put an end to 32-bit apps before 2021 is over. There's a good chance you've been using 64-bit phones and apps for a while, but this should push stragglers to catch up.

		Like the Cortex CPUs, the Mali GPUs are aimed at more than just phones. The flagship Mali-G710 is about 20 percent faster for intensive tasks (35 percent for machine learning) and is aimed at <a href="https://www.engadget.com/lenovo-chromebook-duet-review-150018759.html" rel="external nofollow">Chromebooks</a> in addition to high-end phones. The Mali-G610 offers similar features at a lower price, while the Mali-G510 gives mid-range phones and smart TVs a 100 percent speed boost (including for machine learning) and 22 percent efficiency gains. At the low end, the Mali-G310 brings ARM's Valhall architecture to basic GPUs for the first time, boosting performance for everything from starter smartphones to wearable devices.

Chip makers will have to build their own products around these designs, and it'll take a while after that before phones, PCs and other devices use the new processing power. It's already clear what ARM expects, though — it's anticipating a future where its architecture is more pervasive across the computing landscape, with phones just one part of a much larger strategy.

	We all know the typical speed and physical size advantages that come with SSDs, so the figures aren’t too surprising; a recent IDC report revealed that nearly 60% of new PCs shipped in Q1 used SSDs.
