	There’s an update for YouTube viewers. <a href="http://support.google.com/youtube/thread/139222780?hl=en&amp;msgid=185994851" rel="external nofollow">The video-sharing service is finally adding separate tabs</a> to clearly distinguish between its regular videos and Shorts that limit video pieces to 60 seconds in length.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new change will make it both easier and simple for viewers to discover the content they prefer watching while exploring a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/youtube-launches-new-creators-website-to-help-channels-thrive/" rel="external nofollow">creator’s channel</a> page. So, rather than seeing all video uploads (including long-length videos, Shorts, and live streams) under a single Videos tab, users will see separate tabs dedicated to each category, as described below:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Shorts tab: Dedicated to short video clips. If you are watching <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/youtube-starts-adding-watermarks-to-downloaded-shorts/" rel="external nofollow">YouTube Shorts</a> in the Shorts feed and try moving to a creator’s channel from the feed, you will be directed to the Shorts tab.
	</li>
	<li>
		Live tab: You’ll find all streams in this tab including any that are currently active, scheduled, or archived.
	</li>
	<li>
		Videos tab: Plays long-form content. You’ll no more see Shorts or live streams listed under it.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The change comes amid feedback from users who insisted on having a more streamlined way to discover and consume content. The update has started to roll out today and will be available for both the YouTube app and the website across all platforms in the coming weeks.

			Elon Musk, <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/872260000491593728" rel="external nofollow">Twitter’s most important shitposter</a>, has added the company to his business empire after months of legal skirmishes, according to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/27/elon-musk-now-in-charge-of-twitter-ceo-and-cfo-have-left-sources-say.html" rel="external nofollow">CNBC,</a> <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/10/27/twitter-elon-musk/" rel="external nofollow">The Washington Post</a>. and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter-reach-agreement-to-close-acquisition-deal-2022-10" rel="external nofollow">Insider</a>. He celebrated by firing executives.

	<div>
		<p>
			Musk fired Parag Agrawal, who succeeded Jack Dorsey as Twitter CEO, and chief financial officer Ned Segal, both of who were in the building at the time and escorted out by security, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/elon-musk-completes-44-bln-acquisition-twitter-2022-10-28/" rel="external nofollow">according to Reuters.</a> Vijaya Gadde, the company’s policy chief <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/27/23044521/twitter-policy-chief-vijaya-gadde-elon-musk-policy-criticism-harassment" rel="external nofollow">whom Musk had publicly criticized</a> was also ousted. Sean Edgett, the general counsel, is gone too, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/27/technology/musk-twitter.html" rel="external nofollow">The New York Times reports</a>. (Bloomberg says <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-28/musk-completes-44-billion-twitter-deal-ending-months-of-enmity" rel="external nofollow">security escorted him out</a>, as well.) Chief customer officer Sarah Personette was also fired, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-ceo-executives-get-big-payday-after-elon-musk-takeover-2022-10" rel="external nofollow">Insider reports</a>.

			The execs received handsome payouts for their trouble, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-ceo-executives-get-big-payday-after-elon-musk-takeover-2022-10" rel="external nofollow">Insider reports</a>: Agrawal got $38.7 million, Segal got $25.4 million, Gadde got $12.5 million, and Personette, <a href="https://twitter.com/SEP/status/1585624570052202497" rel="external nofollow">who tweeted yesterday about how excited she was for Musk’s takeover</a>, got $11.2 million.

			Musk <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/14/23024905/elon-musk-offers-to-buy-twitter" rel="external nofollow">originally offered to buy Twitter</a> in April, then <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/8/23200961/elon-musk-files-back-out-twitter-deal-breach-of-contract" rel="external nofollow">changed his mind and tried to back out in May</a>. Then, he changed his mind again on October 4th, filing a letter with the Securities and Exchange Commission <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/4/23387320/elon-musk-twitter-offer-buy-again" rel="external nofollow">affirming his commitment to the original deal</a>. Musk has been meeting with Twitter employees this week and is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/27/23427453/twitter-employees-wait-for-elon-musk-takeover-to-close" rel="external nofollow">expected to address them on Friday</a> now that his $44 billion takeover is done.
		</p>

		<p>

	<div>
		<p>
			Musk was <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-05/musk-canceled-last-week-s-deposition-on-covid-fears-filing-says" rel="external nofollow">scheduled to be deposed on October 6th and 7th</a>, after having moved his deposition from late September. He announced he’d honor the contract his lawyers negotiated after all just days before the deposition was to take place. That deposition was probably going to be uncomfortable; a judge found that <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/5/23389568/musk-twitter-signal-deleted-messages-judge-ruling" rel="external nofollow">Musk likely deleted Signal messages</a> that were relevant to the case. The deposition was delayed as Musk and Twitter worked toward a deal; Musk even received a court order halting proceedings to allow the deal to close by October 28th.

			<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/27/23427453/twitter-employees-wait-for-elon-musk-takeover-to-close" rel="external nofollow">Questions still remain</a> about what Musk plans to do with Twitter now that he owns it, though he’s made <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/5/23389159/elon-musk-twitter-future" rel="external nofollow">a number of public comments</a>. The Washington Post reported that Musk planned to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/report-elon-musk-plans-to-cut-75percent-of-twitter-workforce" rel="external nofollow">cull 75 percent of Twitter’s employees</a>, citing estimates given to prospective Twitter investors. Musk told Twitter staffers that the 75 percent figure was inaccurate, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-27/musk-tells-twitter-employees-he-doesn-t-plan-to-cut-75-of-jobs" rel="external nofollow">Bloomberg reported</a>. In Musk’s text messages, provided during discovery to Twitter’s lawyers, he and entrepreneur Jason Calacanis, a friend of his, discussed cutting staff by requiring a return to office.

			“Day zero,” <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23112929-elon-musk-text-exhibits-twitter-v-musk" rel="external nofollow">Calacanis texted Musk</a>. “Sharpen your blades boys.” Requiring Twitter employees to return to offices would mean 20 percent of the staff would leave voluntarily, Calacanis wrote. Also, Calacanis told Musk, “Twitter CEO is my dream job.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Twitter faces challenges to its free speech stance in court, as the Supreme Court agreed to take up <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/5/23387621/elon-musk-twitter-acquisition-free-speech-supreme-court-case-section-230" rel="external nofollow">two cases that will determine its liability for illegal content</a>.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has suggested he’ll change the way Twitter’s moderation works, potentially <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/10/23065413/elon-musk-donald-trump-twitter-ban-lift" rel="external nofollow">relaxing the kinds of policies that saw former President Donald Trump permanently banned</a> from the platform.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Although Musk has said that his Twitter acquisition is “<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/14/23025343/elon-musk-twitter-takeover-ted-talk-quote-stock-buyout" rel="external nofollow">not a way to make money</a>,” he’s reportedly raised ideas for cost-cutting and increasing revenue. Governments and corporations could be charged a “<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/4/23056524/elon-musk-twitter-business-plans-charging-governments-corporations" rel="external nofollow">slight cost</a>” to use Twitter, and there could be <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/28/23047376/elon-musk-twitter-job-cuts" rel="external nofollow">job cuts on the table</a> to improve the company’s bottom line. Some of Twitter’s current employees have criticized Musk’s plans for the platform as “<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/17/23172380/elon-musk-twitter-meeting-employee-reactions" rel="external nofollow">incoherent</a>” and lacking in detail.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			More broadly, Musk has talked about using Twitter to create “X, the everything app.” This is a reference to China’s WeChat app, which started life as a messaging platform but has since grown to encompass multiple businesses, from shopping to payments and gaming. “You basically live on WeChat in China,” <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/16/23171054/elon-musk-twitter-deal-1-billion-users-wechat-tiktok" rel="external nofollow">Musk told Twitter employees in June</a>. “If we can recreate that with Twitter, we’ll be a great success.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Musk is expected to share more about his plan for Twitter with employees on Friday. Late Thursday evening, hours after the news of him firing execs first broke, he tweeted the following:

	Apple has released information about its fiscal 2022 fourth quarter, which ended September 24, 2022. Despite the grim economic backdrop, the company saw record quarter revenue of $90.1 billion, up 8% compared to the same period year-over-year. It also saw annual revenues of $394.3 billion, which was also up 8% year-over-year. In addition to a good financial report, the company said its active installation base of devices reached all-time highs for all major product categories.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Commenting the on the data, Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO, said:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	“Our record September quarter results continue to demonstrate our ability to execute effectively in spite of a challenging and volatile macroeconomic backdrop. We continued to invest in our long-term growth plans, generated over $24 billion in operating cash flow, and returned over $29 billion to our shareholders during the quarter. The strength of our ecosystem, unmatched customer loyalty, and record sales spurred our active installed base of devices to a new all-time high. This quarter capped another record-breaking year for Apple, with revenue growing over $28 billion and operating cash flow up $18 billion versus last year.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those holding shares in the company, Apple said that it will pay out a cash dividend of $0.23 per share of the company’s common stock. You must be holding Apple stock by November 7 to receive the cash dividend on November 10.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Going forward, Apple CEO Tim Cook appears bullish on the company’s prospects. He said that Apple is heading into the holiday season with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-iphone-14-apple-watch-series-8-and-other-products-arrive-in-stores-globally/" rel="external nofollow">its most powerful line-up ever</a>, while sticking to principles such as preserving privacy and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-calls-on-its-global-supply-chain-partners-to-decarbonize-by-2030/" rel="external nofollow">protecting the environment</a>. Only time will tell if fans remain dedicated to the brand despite all the economic issues.

	<p>
		Yesterday, The Lego Group announced it will discontinue its Mindstorms-branded products at the end of 2022, as first reported by <a href="https://www.brickfanatics.com/lego-discontinuing-mindstorms-end-of-2022/" rel="external nofollow">Brick Fanatics</a> and several other <a href="https://brickset.com/article/84219/lego-mindstorms-to-be-discontinued" rel="external nofollow">Lego fan websites</a>. In an official statement, the company said it will redirect its internal Mindstorms team into "different areas of the business" and that its Mindstorms Robot Inventor App digital platforms will remain live until the end of 2024.

	<p>
		Lego Mindstorms debuted on September 1, 1998, as a breakthrough educational tool—originally <a href="https://lan.lego.com/news/overview/lego-mindstorms-reflections-%E2%80%93-what-happened-before-the-announcement-in-january-1998-r173/" rel="external nofollow">developed at MIT</a>—that allowed kids and adults alike to craft robotic systems using standard Lego parts and a computerized control brick.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The set gained a key part of its appeal by allowing owners to program the control brick easily on a personal computer using a drag-and-drop visual programming language, making sophisticated robots possible with a relatively simple set of parts. Over the years, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/05/a-functional-pinball-machine-made-entirely-from-lego/" rel="external nofollow">hobbyists</a> and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2008/02/researchers-use-lego-mindstorm-robot-to-improve-atm-security/" rel="external nofollow">researchers</a> took the Mindstorms series in unexpected new directions while Lego itself <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/08/review-lego-mindstorms-ev3-means-giant-robots-powerful-computers/" rel="external nofollow">iterated the product line</a> with increasingly sophisticated offerings.

The 51515 kit retails for $359.99, but it may not be available for long as Lego phases out the product line.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Here is Lego's full statement, which was provided to Lego fan sites:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		Since its launch in September 1998, LEGO MINDSTORMS has been one of the core "Build &amp; Code" experiences in the company’s portfolio, carrying with it significant brand equity and becoming a stand-out experience for the early days of consumer robotics and leading to current Build &amp; Code experiences such as SPIKE Prime, from LEGO Education’s LEGO Learning System.
	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		However, now having a number of priorities in LEGO Education and other Build &amp; Code experiences, we have decided to focus our resources and future plans by redirecting our MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor team and their expertise into different areas of the business.
	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		This means the physical MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor product (51515) and its related elements (88016 and 88018) are to exit our portfolio from the end of 2022, whilst digital platforms—such as the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor App—will remain live until at least the end of 2024.
	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		We still have strong belief in the Build &amp; Code proposition and will continue to support it through platforms such as SPIKE Prime, and we are continuing to hold on to the trademark for the MINDSTORMS brand and assessing our future plans together with LEGO Education.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		It's worth noting that Lego has not completely closed the door on a return of the Mindstorms brand in the future—the company mentions retaining the Mindstorms trademark. But with a redirection of internal Mindstorms resources and a gap in Mindstorms product availability after December 2022, it seems like this is the end of the product line as we know it.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Meanwhile, Lego will continue to support the <a href="https://education.lego.com/en-us/products/lego-education-spike-prime-set/45678#spike%E2%84%A2-prime" rel="external nofollow">SPIKE Prime</a> series, which offers similar capabilities as Mindstorms, but aimed squarely at the education market instead of retail.
	</p>

	<span style="font-size:14px;">Meta fell out of the top 20 U.S. companies today after 23% of its stock price was wiped out. Last summer, the company <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/28/22554502/facebook-1-trillion-dollar-market-cap-company-business" rel="external nofollow">became worth a trillion dollars</a>, but since then its market cap has declined to just $269.07 billion. <p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The latest stock price drop for Meta comes after it reported a second quarterly decline in earnings. Some investors, such as Altimeter Capital, believe Meta needs to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/long-term-meta-shareholder-wants-company-to-cut-workforce-by-a-fifth-and-become-focused/" rel="external nofollow">“get its mojo back”</a>. Altimeter Capital’s head, Brad Gerstner, suggested that the company should limit spending on the metaverse and reduce staff numbers by a massive 20% to boost investor confidence. He said these actions would double the company’s free cash flow.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">In a comment on Wednesday about the situation, Mark Zuckerberg said:</span>
</p>

<blockquote>
	<p>
		<span style="font-size:14px;">“There’s macroeconomic issues, there’s a lot of competition, there’s ads challenges especially coming from Apple, and then there’s some of the longer-term things that we’re taking on expenses because we believe that they’re going to provide greater returns over time. I appreciate the patience and I think that those who are patient and invest with us will be rewarded.”</span>
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The decline in Meta’s stock price has been so dramatic that CNBC compared the wipe off as “reminiscent of the dot-com bust days” but that much more value has been erased from just one company. While Meta’s stock price may be making dramatic moves, the situation now is vastly different to how it was two decades ago. Meta’s products are mature household names that are used by billions of people, and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.</span>

	Meta is losing more on its metaverse bet than ever, but Zuckerberg is telling investors and employees to trust him
</h3>

<div>
	<div>
		<p>
			Toward the end of Meta’s earnings call on Wednesday discussing <a href="https://investor.fb.com/investor-events/event-details/2022/Q3-2022-Earnings/default.aspx" rel="external nofollow">the company’s results for Q3 2022</a>, CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a moment to address his metaverse doubters.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			“Look, I get that a lot of people might disagree with this investment, but from what I can tell, I think this is going to be a very important thing,” he said. “People will look back a decade from now and talk about the importance of the work being done here.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			The problem is that a decade is a long time from now. And as Zuckerberg experienced on today’s earnings call, he is losing faithful supporters quickly. “I think kind of summing up how investors are feeling right now is that there are just too many experimental bets versus proven bets,” one Wall Street analyst said on the call.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			The <a href="https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2022/q3/Meta-09.30.2022-Exhibit-99.1-FINAL.pdf" rel="external nofollow">numbers are staggering (PDF)</a>: Meta’s Reality Labs division lost $3.7 billion this last quarter and $9.4 billion this year so far. It made only $285 million in revenue for the quarter, a nearly 50 percent drop attributed primarily to weaker sales of <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/26/23279272/meta-quest-2-occulus-100-price-increase" rel="external nofollow">the Quest 2 headset that got a $100 price hike in August</a>. The next version of that headset is currently planned for release in the second half of next year, and Meta <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/11/23397328/meta-quest-pro-vr-headset-price-release-shipping" rel="external nofollow">just released its Quest Pro this week</a>, a pricier $1,499 version marketed for work use cases.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			“We do anticipate that Reality Labs operating losses in 2023 will grow significantly year-over-year,” Meta said in its earnings press release, just a few days after a large shareholder publicly pressured the company to reign in its spending.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Meta’s stock dropped a staggering 20 percent today after it reported a 4 percent drop in revenue growth. The results show Apple’s ad tracking prompt has cost it over $10 billion, advertising spending on its platform is continuing to weaken, and its stock is currently trading at a price not seen since the end of 2015.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Zuckerberg tried to give investors reasons to be bullish today. He said there are more daily users on Facebook than ever before. Instagram and WhatsApp both have over 2 billion users, with the latter just starting a significant marketing push in the US <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/17/23409018/mark-zuckerberg-meta-whatsapp-imessage-privacy-security-ads" rel="external nofollow">that takes aim directly at iMessage</a>. Even the company’s TikTok competitor, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/12/23349004/instagrams-reels-tiktok-internal-documents" rel="external nofollow">Reels, is starting to grow dramatically</a>, with Zuckerberg saying, “we believe we are gaining time spent share on competitors like TikTok.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			That may be true, and this could be another painful moment of transition akin to Facebook’s shift from desktop to mobile or the introduction of Stories like Zuckerberg suggested. But for now, he is experiencing a crisis of confidence.

			Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s CEO of gaming, is the latest tech exec to take a shot at Meta’s vision of the metaverse. When asked his definition of the metaverse, Spencer described it as “a poorly built video game” at the WSJ Tech Live conference today, <a href="https://youtu.be/1Yl0cW4t8kE?t=72" rel="external nofollow">as seen at about the 1:12 mark of this video</a> (embedded above).
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			<a href="https://www.theverge.com/22749919/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-meta-company-rebrand" rel="external nofollow">Meta rebranded from Facebook last year</a> as a testament to its focus on the metaverse, which it believes will become a place where you not only socialize with friends but also do serious work with colleagues. It seems as if Spencer doesn’t necessarily agree with the work aspect of the metaverse, at least in one form. “Video game creators have an amazing ability to build compelling worlds that we want to go spend time in,” he said at the conference. “For me, building a metaverse that looks like a meeting room... I just find that’s not where I want to spend most of my time.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Spencer wasn’t the only person to push back on the idea of the metaverse during WSJ Tech Live. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel defined the metaverse as <a href="https://youtu.be/BrilzVUk5xM?t=740" rel="external nofollow">“living inside a computer”</a> and followed that up by saying, “The last thing I want to do when I get home from work at the end of a long day is live inside a computer.” Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak said that the metaverse is <a href="https://youtu.be/m-ugwoEOMvg?t=1770" rel="external nofollow">“a word I’ll never use.”</a> Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the company tends <a href="https://youtu.be/0oCw166oEmg?t=1843" rel="external nofollow">“not to use” the word metaverse</a> “because for us, that’s a big, broad term. For us, it’s next-generation storytelling.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Meta hasn’t made a very convincing case that its VR worlds are worth hanging out in. Even Meta’s own employees <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/6/23391895/meta-facebook-horizon-worlds-vr-social-network-too-buggy-leaked-memo" rel="external nofollow">are barely using Horizon Worlds</a> — and getting people to buy in can’t have gotten easier after the widespread ridicule over <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/8/19/23313469/mark-zuckerberg-horizon-worlds-screenshot-memes-response-upgrades" rel="external nofollow">Mark Zuckerberg’s widely memed avatar selfie</a>.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			Despite Spencer’s comments, though, he does feel that the concept of the metaverse is going to change. “I tease a little bit in [saying it’s] a bad video game. I just think we’re early,” he said. But he feels that, over time, the metaverse is “going to end up looking a lot more like video games than some of the models that I see for the metaverse today.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			And it’s not surprising that he’s open to the term — whatever it actually means — given that Microsoft has already started discussing the metaverse for its own ends. The company said that its pending Activision Blizzard acquisition would provide <a href="https://news.microsoft.com/2022/01/18/microsoft-to-acquire-activision-blizzard-to-bring-the-joy-and-community-of-gaming-to-everyone-across-every-device/" rel="external nofollow">“building blocks for the metaverse,”</a> and CEO Satya Nadella spoke during Meta’s Connect keynote to talk about how the two companies are collaborating to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/11/23397251/meta-microsoft-partnership-quest-teams-office-windows-features-vr" rel="external nofollow">bring things like Teams, Windows, and Xbox to VR</a>.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			I’m personally skeptical that everyone will wear a headset, or even AR glasses, for the vast majority of their day. But if I had to guess, Meta will likely take a few cues from video game companies like Microsoft to make its metaverse ideas more enticing.

	Google shut down a bunch of projects this quarter, and now we see why.
</h3>

<div itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Google CEO Sundar Pichai has been on a <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/google-ceo-calls-for-a-more-focused-and-efficient-google/" rel="external nofollow">belt-tightening mission</a> at Google over the past three months, so it seems he saw this coming: Parent company Alphabet's latest earnings are kind of a disaster. The company's <a href="https://abc.xyz/investor/static/pdf/2022Q3_alphabet_earnings_release.pdf?cache=4156e7f" rel="external nofollow">Q3 2022 earnings</a> were released last night, and they show a 27 percent drop in profits compared to last year, with weaker-than-expected earnings and revenue.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Revenue was up 6 percent year over year to $69.1 billion, a sharp growth decline from 2021 Q3, which saw 41 percent growth. Profits were at $13.9 billion, down from $18.9 billion in Q3 2021. As usual, Alphabet earnings are mostly about Google ad revenue and click-through rates, with the company citing reduced spending from the "insurance, loan, mortgage, and crypto subcategories" in particular. Worries about the economy and inflation are causing many Google customers to cut their ad budgets.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Alphabet doesn't break down the non-ads business in much detail, but the two biggest money losers on Alphabet's reports are the "Other Bets" section and Google Cloud. Other Bets lost $1.6 billion, more than the $1.29 billion loss a year ago. "Other Bets" is the "non-Google" part of Alphabet and includes long-term R&amp;D projects like Waymo self-driving cars and the "Wing" drone delivery project. Google says the only significant revenue generators for Other Bets are the "health technology" projects—that would be <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/03/verilys-covid-19-screening-site-goes-live-is-already-over-capacity/" rel="external nofollow">Verily</a> and/or <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2013/09/google-launches-calico-an-anti-aging-company-lead-by-an-apple-executive/" rel="external nofollow">Calico</a>—and "Internet services," aka Google Fiber.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The other big loser is Google Cloud, which lost $699 million this quarter, up from $644 million in Q3 2021. "Google Cloud" on the earnings report combines the Amazon Web Services-fighting infrastructure business and Google Workspace's suite of productivity apps like Gmail and Google Docs. Workspace definitely earns money by showing ads to its 3 billion users, charging for user storage, and charging businesses for Gmail accounts with custom domains. The infrastructure business—Google Cloud Platform—is growing, but it's still <a href="https://www.canalys.com/newsroom/global-cloud-market-Q121" rel="external nofollow">struggling</a> as the No. 3 cloud provider behind Amazon and Microsoft. Google is taking a "longer-term path to profitability" with Cloud Platform.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
	Sundar Pichai has been gearing up for this report all quarter. Saying that Google's productivity is “not where it needs to be,” Pichai has slowed hiring since August, revamped the employee evaluation process, and said the company should be "more mission-focused" and "20 percent more efficient."

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The Google Grim Reaper got a workout, too; Google Hardware's laptop division was <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/google-hardware-reportedly-quits-the-laptop-market/" rel="external nofollow">shut down</a>, the experimental "Area 120" group was forced to ax <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/google-cuts-half-of-its-experimental-area-120-division-projects/" rel="external nofollow">half its projects</a>, the Project Loon leftovers were <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/google-spinoff-aalyria-salvages-project-loon-technology-for-the-us-military/" rel="external nofollow">spun out</a> into a separate company, and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/google-stadia-officially-shuts-down-january-2023-will-refund-game-purchases/" rel="external nofollow">Google Stadia</a> was shut down. YouTube has been trying (and canceling) a series of revenue-boosting experiments like adding up to <a href="https://9to5google.com/2022/09/16/youtube-ads-unskippable/" rel="external nofollow">10 unskippable pre-roll ads</a> to videos and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/youtube-tests-paywalling-4k-video-resolution/" rel="external nofollow">charging</a> for 4K resolution, but it seems like the change that will stick is a<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/youtube-premium-family-plan-jumps-to-22-99-a-month-a-27-percent-increase/" rel="external nofollow"> 27 percent price</a> hike for YouTube Premium family plans. The latest rumor is that Google Assistant—which doesn't generate significant revenue—will have to <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/report-google-doubles-down-on-pixel-hardware-cuts-google-assistant-support/" rel="external nofollow">cut support</a> for various hardware platforms.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Google has hope for the future, though, with the company's financial executives repeatedly highlighting the plan to <a href="https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/resilience-results-reinvention-google-marketing-live/" rel="external nofollow">roll out ads</a> to "YouTube Shorts" later this year. For the first time in a while, YouTube is facing <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/09/tiktok-passes-youtube-in-the-us-for-average-watch-time/" rel="external nofollow">serious competition</a> from a rival video site—TikTok—and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/youtubes-tiktok-clone-shorts-is-out-of-beta-and-open-for-all-us-users/" rel="external nofollow">YouTube Shorts</a> is a straight-up clone of that service. The plan to monetize Shorts also includes creator ad revenue sharing in 2023, at which point the bite-sized YouTube video site will be fully operational.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
</div>

<p>

</p>

	The storage company Seagate has revealed that it’s laying off 3,000 employees as it restructures and cuts costs. The jobs being cut represent 8% of its global workforce, but the company says it needs to reduce costs to meet the needs of the current economic downturn. Those affected are expected to be let go by the company by the end of the second fiscal quarter next year, and it’s expecting pre-tax charges of up to $70 million related to employee severance and other termination benefits.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Providing a comment on the matter, Dave Mosley, Seagate’s CEO, said:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	“Global economic uncertainties and broad-based customer inventory corrections worsened in the latter stages of the September quarter, and these dynamics are reflected in both near-term industry demand and Seagate's financial performance. We have taken quick and decisive actions to respond to current market conditions and enhance long-term profitability, including adjusting our production output and annual capital expenditure plans, and announcing a restructuring plan that will deliver meaningful cost savings while maintaining investments in the mass capacity solutions driving our future growth.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the last couple of months, other tech firms have been cutting back on the numbers they employ. Calm <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/calm-cuts-20-of-staff-following-its-covid-19-boom/" rel="external nofollow">cut 20% of staff</a>, Snap announced <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/snap-lays-off-20-of-staff-and-cuts-original-content/" rel="external nofollow">a 20% cut</a>, Twilio reduced staff numbers <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/personalized-communications-company-twilio-is-the-latest-firm-to-cut-employees/" rel="external nofollow">by almost 900</a>, Meta has said <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/zuckerberg-says-meta-will-downsize-and-freeze-hiring-for-2023/" rel="external nofollow">it will make people redundant</a>, and Microsoft has <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-lays-off-nearly-1000-employees-across-xbox-azure-more/" rel="external nofollow">laid off almost 1,000 employees</a> working in the Xbox and Azure divisions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	COVID-19 lockdowns are still affecting supply chains in China and the war in Ukraine and resulting sanctions are hitting supplies of food and natural gas. Demand for these items is outstripping supply, causing prices to rise. To prevent inflation getting out of control, central banks, such as the U.S. Federal Reserve, are hiking interest rates. Higher interest rates will cause people’s disposable income to drop, meaning there will be less demand for scarce products - this should ease inflation over time.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With less money leftover, people are cutting back on services like Netflix or phone upgrades, and this is hurting the profits of tech firms. As a result, these companies are cutting back on their more experimental ventures and focusing on their profit-making products and services – unfortunately, this means many employees will no longer be needed at their respective company.

	New GPU's monstrous performance is matched by monstrous power draw.

<div itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/rtx-4090-review-nvidias-biggest-gpu-is-easily-its-best/" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia's $1,599 GeForce RTX 4090</a> is an incredibly powerful graphics card, but its performance comes at the cost of high power draw. Like a few of the RTX 3000-series cards, Nvidia uses a new kind of 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector to supply all that power to the card—you can plug up to four 8-pin GPU power cables into the 12VHPWR adapter, which then plugs into the connector on the GPU, saving some board space.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But at least two RT 4090 users are now reporting that their 12VHPWR connectors have overheated and melted during use. These <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/yc6g3u/rtx_4090_adapter_burned/" rel="external nofollow">complaints</a> are <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/yc6g3u/comment/itmjt9d/" rel="external nofollow">sourced</a> from Reddit (<a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/news/rtx-4090-first-melted-adapter-cable" rel="external nofollow">via Tom's Hardware</a>), so take them with a grain of salt—we don't know the exact configuration of either user's PC setup. The specific model of graphics card (a <a href="https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N4090GAMING-OC-24GD#kf" rel="external nofollow">Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC</a> for one user, an <a href="https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/graphics-cards/tuf-gaming/tuf-rtx4090-o24g-gaming/" rel="external nofollow">Asus RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC Edition</a> for the other), the power supply, and any number of other factors could have contributed to the connectors overheating.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		For its part, Nvidia told Tom's that it is "investigating the reports" and that the company is "in contact with the first owner" and planned to reach out to the other. We've followed up with Nvidia and will update this article if the company has more information to share.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Tom's Hardware speculates that the issue could be caused by a bend in the cable too close to the power connector, causing some of its pins to "misalign" or come unseated, potentially creating an uneven power load across the pins. We'll keep an eye on the issue until it's clearer whether these were one-off user failures or a sign of a more systemic problem with the RTX 4090 series.

	Just as manufacturers gear up to announce and release their <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/some-of-samsung039s-upcoming-tvs-will-support-the-hdr10-gaming-standard/" rel="external nofollow">latest</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/lg-announces-launch-of-lg-qned-mini-led-premium-tvs/" rel="external nofollow">greatest</a> 8K capable televisions, new regulations are coming into place that may stop this launch in its tracks due to how power hungry these super high-resolution displays are.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The EU has requirements in place for all consumer electronics that regulate how much energy they can consume, which fall under the Energy Efficiency Index (part of the wider Energy Efficiency Directive). The most recent change in March 2021 resulted in the majority of models falling into the lowest efficiency class possible (G).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is set to be <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/info/news/focus-energy-efficiency-driver-lower-energy-bills-2022-paz-11_en" rel="external nofollow">reviewed again</a>, in a drive by the EU to cut energy bills to consumers by doing what it can. This includes setting an upper limit on maximum energy consumption for TVs, which many manufacturers have said will effectively push back the rollout, or stop sale, of 8K TVs altogether.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The 8K Association has provided a video response to the proposed change:

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The proposed targets for TVs are based on the size of the panel, but go up to a maximum of 178W for an 88" panel. For comparison, Samsung's QN900B 8K LCD is rated at 326W, which is significantly over the proposed limit, and shows the difficulties that manufacturers will face in meeting these requirements.

	Google <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/an-updated-look-and-feel-for-youtube/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">announced</a> the rollout of a new design on its YouTube website today. After gathering input from "thousands of viewers around the world", Google decided to give YouTube a "cleaner, more lively design".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="youtube-glow-videos-scaled.webp" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="356" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/youtube-glow-videos-scaled.webp">

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the main changes is a new ambient mode, which displays a glow around the video area that adapts the background color of that area to the main color of the video.  Ambient mode is activated automatically in dark mode. Google notes that it has updated the dark mode design "so that the colors truly pop" on user screens.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The feature, which is rolling out to desktop and mobile versions of YouTube, looks to become a controversial one. Google claims that it received "overwhelmingly positive reactions from users during testing", but first reactions on sites such as Twitter or Reddit paint a different picture. Some like ambient mode, others dislike it. Some find it distracting, others don't want it to change dark mode's color scheme while playing videos.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" h8f2ti8zw="" hpuz1fdj9="" jcvckgmgv="" loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/OmykwTnimv4" title="YouTube video player"><br>
	</iframe>
</p>

<p>
	Good news is that it is easy to turn off the glow of YouTube's new ambient mode. Here is how that is done:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On desktop and mobile devices:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		While playing a video, select the Settings button.
	</li>
	<li>
		Locate the Ambient Mode setting in the list of preferences.
	</li>
	<li>
		Toggle it to off to disable Ambient Mode for all videos on YouTube (in that browser).
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Other options are provided by userscripts. The script <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/445136-youtube-watch-page-update-reverter" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">YouTube watch page update reverter</a>, for instance, reverts the watch page to the classic one. Note that it has not been updated yet to reflect the changes announced today. Keep an eye on<a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/by-site/youtube.com?sort=created" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank"> other userscripts</a> as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another alternative is to use third-party apps or services to watch YouTube videos. <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2022/07/07/huge-update-for-third-party-android-youtube-client-newpipe-released/" rel="external nofollow">NewPipe</a> is an excellent YouTube client for Android, but there are other <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2022/03/14/youtube-vanced-alternatives-for-android/" rel="external nofollow">YouTube client alternatives</a> as well. Desktop users may want to check out extensions such as <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2022/03/16/libredirect-loads-privacy-friendly-sites-automatically-when-you-load-youtube-search-tiktok-and-other-sites/" rel="external nofollow">LibRedirect</a>, which redirect YouTube to mirror sites powered by Invidious and others.
</p>

<h2>
	Other YouTube design changes
</h2>

<p>
	There is more. Playlists show more details now and have received the same color treatment according to Google. To reduce distractions, Google decided to change links in video descriptions to buttons. Frequent actions, such as sharing or downloading, are "formatted to minimize distractions".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There is also a new pinch to zoom feature and precise seeking feature available that is being rolled out to all users on Android or iOS. Pinch to zoom allows users to zoom in and out of videos while they are playing. The zoom level stays once the action is ended on behalf of the user.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Precise seeking is designed to improve going to a specific part of the video. It works by dragging or swiping while seeking. YouTube displays a row of thumbnails of the video in that case that assists users in going to a specific part of the video.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Now You: </strong>what is your take on the design changes on YouTube?

	Microsoft has announced the launch of "Project Volterra" or Windows Dev Kit 2023—the first mini PC from Microsoft powered by an ARM processor. The device aims at Windows developers to help them bring their apps to ARM devices and help populate the category among consumers.
</p>

<p>

	The Windows Dev Kit 2023 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/developers-will-soon-be-able-to-build-custom-widgets-for-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">announced earlier this year at the Build 2022 conference</a>) is based upon the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Compute Platform paired with 32GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. Ports include three USB-A, two USB-C, and a Mini DisplayPort, allowing users to connect up to three monitors, including two at 4K 60Hz.

<p>
	The computer also features a neural processing unit (NPU) to let developers bring AI-based experiences to their apps and projects. Microsoft says that the NPU in the Windows Dev Kit 2023 is about 90 times faster than traditional processors or 20 times faster than GPUs when using specific AI models.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Windows Dev Kit 2023 is another sign of Microsoft taking Windows on ARM more seriously. Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro 9 lineup consisting of Intel and ARM-based variants with optional 5G connectivity. The Windows Dev Kit 2023, or "Project Volterra," will allow developers to bring better experiences to those opting for Windows devices based on ARM processors. It should help break the "no apps - no users - no apps" vicious cycle and make Windows on ARM a more attractive choice.

	With an increasing user-base, Steam has showed that you don’t need freebies to gain the trust of users. Good service is important too.
</h3>

<p>
	In the world of PC gaming, Steam is considered a golden standard. It’s a gaming store created by the game developer Valve, best known for it’s Half-Life, Portal, Counter Strike and Team Fortress gaming series. Steam also is gaming client come game launcher software. Allowing users to arrange and launch all the games they have purchased from Steam. Initially created to serve updates to its games, Steam has come a long way.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Almost every PC game developer or publisher in the world lists their games to be sold on Steam. In fact, so big is Steam’s impact that it once accounted for 75% online market share in PC gaming sales.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This meant that gaming companies saw an opportunity for themselves. They thought, why pay Steam about 30% of their sale money if they can make their own store. Several gaming companies have tried doing so. They started releasing their games exclusively on their own gaming store, on their own gaming client.
</p>

<h3>
	Come Epic Games Store
</h3>

<p>
	One of them is Epic Games Store created by Epic Games, best known for its Unreal, Gears of War and Fortnite games. With huge investments from Chinese giant Tencent, Epic Games created a gaming store to break the Steam’s monopoly. Subsidized with massive cuts in fees, Epic Games Store has tried swaying game companies away from Steam. It also gives away at least two free games every week to attract players too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But players aren’t the most innocent creatures. They look for their own best interests. Epic Game’s Store is a frustrating mess. It does not even have a quarter, forget half, of the features which Steam provides. At most, many use Epic Games Store only to get free games.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Except Epic Games, many other companies have realized, they cannot compete with Steam either in features or quality. Some have closed their gaming stores, some have started releasing games both on their on service and Steam too. Looks like there’s a good reason for it.
</p>

<h3>
	Steam Crosses 30 Million Peak Players
</h3>

<p>
	With Epic Games offering free games, one would wonder if Steam could continue with its user-base like this. Yes, Steam offers superior features, quality and less frustrating service. But can it fight against freebies offered by Epic Games. Apparently the answer is yes. Not only Steam is fighting nicely against Epic Games Store, it’s setting new records.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Not so long ago, Steam introduced an updated <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">Steam Charts page</a> which offered information about peak players on Steam. It shows total daily players online on Steam and also shows top-selling games weekly and in total, most played games daily or otherwise, among many other things.
</p>

<p>

	<figcaption>
		<em>Steam Charts Showing Peak Users Crossing The 30 Million Peak Online Users Mark</em>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	Today, the Steam Charts page has revealed that it has crossed 30 million peak online users. Specifically, on about 23rd October, at about 2 PM UTC time, Steam had about 30,026,351 players online (the numbers keep changing slightly). SteamDB, a third party Steam database tracker site, <a href="https://steamdb.info/app/753/graphs/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">confirms the same</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The numbers are fascinating. One might wonder, that’s just 0.37% of world population. But we are talking about a single PC gaming service having that many players online together just at that moment. That 0.37% world population is huge.
</p>

<h3>
	Outcome Of Big Peak Online Users
</h3>

<p>
	While it’s true that peak online users does not mean everyone is playing / launching a game from Steam or browsing the Steam store. It’s still very significant.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What’s important here that the strong fight showed by Epic Games to sway the users away from Steam by giving away free games is not working. Make no mistake, nothing wrong in offering free games. But not with anti-competitive and anti-consumer behavior, where one buys out or bribes game developers by signing exclusive store contracts by giving away huge amounts of money. That money could be better invested in improving the game store and also getting rid of questionable investors which raise the privacy concerns for the users.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As for Steam, this shows it is only growing more. Make no mistake. Steam is not perfect. Steam too has its own set of issues. Higher developer fees and it’s support center being just a couple out of many of them. But it’s certainly the best we have right now. Here’s hoping it improves even further.
</p>

	The speed record for data transmission using a single light source and optical chip has been shattered once again. Engineers have transmitted data at a blistering rate of 1.84 petabits per second (Pbit/s), almost twice the global internet traffic per second.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It’s hard to overstate just how fast 1.84 Pbit/s really is. Your home internet is probably getting a few hundred megabits per second, or if you’re really lucky, you might be on a 1-gigabit or even 10-gigabit connection – but 1 petabit is a million gigabits. It’s more than 20 times faster than ESnet6, the upcoming upgrade to the scientific network used by the likes of NASA.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Even more impressive is the fact this new speed record was set using a single light source and a single optical chip. An infrared laser is beamed into a chip called a frequency comb that splits the light into hundreds of different frequencies, or colors. Data can then be encoded into the light by modulating the amplitude, phase and polarization of each of these frequencies, before recombining them into one beam and transmitting it through optical fiber.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In experiments, researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Chalmers University of Technology used the setup to transmit data at 1.84 Pbit/s, encoded in 223 wavelength channels, down a 7.9-km-long (4.9-mile) optical fiber that contained 37 separate cores. For reference, the global internet bandwidth has been estimated at just shy of 1 Pbit/s, meaning this system could potentially handle all of that at once with plenty of room to grow.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This data transmission speed greatly exceeds the previous record of 1.02 Pbit/s, which was only set in May this year. A previous optical chip design, similar to that used in the new study, managed 44 terabits per second in mid-2020.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But the new chip is far from finished breaking records, according to the team behind it. Using a computational model to scale the data transmission potential of the system, the researchers claim that it could eventually reach eye-watering speeds of up to 100 Pbit/s.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“The reason for this is that our solution is scalable – both in terms of creating many frequencies and in terms of splitting the frequency comb into many spatial copies and then optically amplifying them, and using them as parallel sources with which we can transmit data,” said Professor Leif Katsuo Oxenløwe, lead author of the study. “Although the comb copies must be amplified, we do not lose the qualities of the comb, which we utilize for spectrally efficient data transmission.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The research was published in the journal <em><span style="color:#2980b9;"><strong>Nature Photonics</strong></span></em>.

<p>
	We are at the end of yet another week, which was quieter than the last one due to the lack of any Ignite or Surface events. That said, a lot of stuff did take place in the past few days including the rollout of the Windows 10 2022 Update, a few conflicts related to Microsoft, and some news related to app updates. Find out more in our weekly digest for October 15 - October 21!

<h2>
	Windows 10 2022 Update

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft finally <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-2022-update-is-now-available-with-a-limited-set-of-productivity-features/" rel="external nofollow">started rolling out the Windows 10 2022 Update (version 22H2) this week</a>. Although it's supposed to be a feature update, we basically know nothing about any new consumer-facing features. Microsoft says that there is a "<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-suggests-new-features-will-be-coming-to-windows-10-version-22h2/" rel="external nofollow">limited scope of new features and functionality</a> delivered via a familiar, fast and reliable update experience", but doesn't really go into any details. While it's not surprising that there are no notable features in this update considering that development focus has shifted to Windows 11, it's unclear why Microsoft is being so mysterious about it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Prior to releasing version 22H2 for Windows 10, Microsoft also released an out-of-band (OOB) update for the OS. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-issues-out-of-band-update-kb5020435-to-windows-10-to-fix-connection-issues/" rel="external nofollow">KB5020435 fixes an issue that was causing handshake failures</a> for some types of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) connections. That said, the update brings with its own set of known issues too.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Switching gears to Windows 11, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-outs-windows-11-oob-update-kb5020387-to-fix-tlssls-network-issues/" rel="external nofollow">the OS received an OOB update to fix the same SSL/TLS problem too</a>. It's important to understand that this network issue was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-confirms-october-patch-tuesday-has-network-issues-on-windows-11-windows-10-more/" rel="external nofollow">introduced to both Windows 10 and Windows 11 with October's Patch Tuesday</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We also learned that Windows 11 version 22H2 isn't playing too nicely with both AMD and Nvidia hardware. Several users are <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-22h2-apparently-causing-performance-issue-on-amd-ryzen-7000-cpus/" rel="external nofollow">reporting reduced performance on the former's systems with Ryzen 7000 CPUs</a> while others are <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-22h2-and-nvidia-drivers-apparently-still-refusing-to-play-nicely-together/" rel="external nofollow">complaining about the same on Nvidia GPUs</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Furthermore, Microsoft quietly announced that with the latest version of Windows Terminal and the Windows 11 2022 Update, the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-terminal-is-now-the-default-command-line-tool-with-latest-windows-11-update/" rel="external nofollow">default command line tool for Windows has been changed from Windows Console Host (conhost.exe) to Windows Terminal</a>. New features in tow are multiple profiles, tabs and panes, command palette, customization, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There were a few Insider builds for Windows 11 too. <a href="http://neowin.net/news/windows-11-build-25227-includes-start-menu-and-widget-notification-badge-experiment/" rel="external nofollow">Build 25227 in the Dev Channel</a> introduced Group Policy changes for update management and a couple of interesting experiments related to the Widgets and the Start menu. This was followed up by a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-again-cleaning-its-pipes-with-windows-11-dev-build-252271010-kb5020539/" rel="external nofollow">servicing pipeline release in the form of build 25227.1010</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5018496-release-preview-has-right-click-on-taskbar-for-task-manager/" rel="external nofollow">the Release Preview Channel netted build 22621.754 (KB5018496)</a>, which brings several functionalities including right-click on Taskbar to launch Task Manager, Search on Taskbar, and updates to the Microsoft Account enrollment within Windows, among other things. The Beta Channel <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-build-22623870-includes-more-fixes-for-tablet-optimized-taskbar/" rel="external nofollow">received builds 22621.870 and 22623.870 (KB5018499)</a> with enhancements to Narrator, System Tray, tablet-optimized Taskbar, and more. Finally, Windows Server vNext bagged ISOs for build 25227 too, but as usual, there is no changelog. There is one known issue though, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-server-vnext-build-25227-iso-released-to-windows-insiders/" rel="external nofollow">so do check out our dedicated coverage here</a>.

<p>
	Sordum, a company behind the development of several Windows utilities announced this week that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/sordum-kills-defender-control-updates-due-to-conflict-with-microsoft-defender/" rel="external nofollow">it's killing off its Defender Control software due to conflicts with Windows Defender</a>. For those unaware, Sordum's tool allows people to force-disable Windows Defender, claiming that it frees up resources for other use-cases. However, people have recently been reporting errors with trying to turn Windows Defender back on after disabling it using Defender Control. Sordum has blamed Microsoft for the fiasco but has shut down its tool too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On the flip side, Microsoft has <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-calls-out-security-firm-for-exaggerating-impact-of-bluebleed-misconfiguration/" rel="external nofollow">blamed a security firm called SOCRadar for mishandling the disclosure of a "BlueBleed" misconfiguration</a> and exaggerating its impact. SOCRadar claimed that an Azure Blob Storage bucket had been available for public access and that the endpoint exposed the data for 65,000 entities spread across 111 countries. While Microsoft acknowledged the issue and quickly patched it, it called out SOCRadar for inaccurate figures about the scope of BlueBleed and also for marketing its security tool in the process, which the Redmond tech firm says is "not in the best interest of ensuring customer privacy or security and potentially exposing them to unnecessary risk".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-lays-off-nearly-1000-employees-across-xbox-azure-more/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft laid off around 1,000 employees across various departments</a> including Xbox, Azure, and more. Although this round of layoffs impacts less than 1% of its global workforce, it is still an unfortunate situation for those affected, which includes industry veterans like KC Lemson and Greg Chapman. Microsoft has stated that the reason for these layoffs is the re-evaluation of its business priorities and the restructuring of the organization.

There's no concrete release date for the new app, but it should be arriving within the next few weeks.

	It seems like <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-upcoming-pc-manager-will-try-to-boost-performance-and-switch-you-to-edge/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft is also working on a "PC Manager" app</a>, which sounds like a competitor to CCleaner. Its responsibilities such as cleaning temporary files, monitoring resource usage, managing startup apps, and... recommending people to switch to Microsoft Edge. The app is unlikely to appeal to tech-savvy consumers, since it's basically just a bunch of shortcuts to existing functionalities in the OS.

	Finally, we'd also like to bring your attention to a third-party utility called Fluent Flyouts. </div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Installing Steam on a Linux system just got a little easier, at least if you can install a Snap package. Ubuntu-maker Canonical announced today that its <a href="https://snapcraft.io/steam" rel="external nofollow">Steam Snap</a> supports "bleeding edge" Mesa graphics APIs, with more improvements coming soon.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Snaps are <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/06/goodbye-apt-and-yum-ubuntus-snap-apps-are-coming-to-distros-everywhere/" rel="external nofollow">self-contained packages</a> that are easier for users to install without command lines and also contain the other programs and libraries they rely on, preventing conflicts between the versions of installed software applications (i.e., <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_hell" rel="external nofollow">dependency hell</a>). They're theoretically easier to update through a store app and are sandboxed from the rest of the system. They're also not universally appreciated in the greater Linux community, as they're pushed primarily by Canonical through its <a href="https://snapcraft.io/snap-store" rel="external nofollow">Snap Store</a> and can reduce the performance of some apps.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<a href="https://ubuntu.com/blog/level-up-linux-gaming-new-steam-snap" rel="external nofollow">Canonical worked with Steam-creator Valve</a> to create the Steam Snap in "Early Access" in March. It bakes in the Mesa drivers and Proton and Wine wrappers needed for some Windows-via-Linux games, resolves the 32-bit/64-bit discrepancies for certain libraries, and handles the other necessary items that users would typically be pulling in via command-line and private repositories.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The latest Steam Snaps add support for removable media, high-DPI displays, and localization. Canonical states that the app also benefits from a migration to <a href="https://ubuntu.com/engage/technical-intro-ubuntu-core22" rel="external nofollow">Core 22</a> and LZO compression. (Snaps were originally developed for Ubuntu's mobile OS and <a href="https://ubuntu.com/internet-of-things" rel="external nofollow">embedded/Internet of Things platform</a>. It's <a href="https://ubuntu.com/blog/snaps-how-we-got-here" rel="external nofollow">complicated</a>.)
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		At the moment, installing the Steam Snap pulls in the very latest Mesa drivers from <a href="https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers" rel="external nofollow">Oibaf's PPA repository</a>. In the near future, Canonical wants to let Snap installers customize their install if they wish, choosing "fresh" or "turtle" Mesa drivers for the latest point release or stable releases, respectively.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Over the next few months, the Steam Snap team wants to add support for the following: <a href="https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode" rel="external nofollow">Feral Interactive's GameMode</a> (now installed by default on Ubuntu desktop); MangoHUD to overlay frames-per-second and other performance data; and automatically enabling Proton, or "Steam Play," by default in Steam.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The Mesa drivers in the Steam Snap won't do much for modern Nvidia graphics cards, so Canonical felt it necessary to address Nvidia, with which it has a "<a href="https://ubuntu.com/blog/tag/nvidia" rel="external nofollow">close collaboration.</a>" Canonical states that it's getting Nvidia 's latest drivers to its users within two months of release. Nvidia took <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/05/nvidia-takes-first-step-toward-open-source-linux-gpu-drivers/" rel="external nofollow">very small, highly caveated steps toward open source support</a> earlier this year, releasing some parts of its driver but not the most important user-space sections. It's easier for Ubuntu and other distro makers to package Nvidia's binary, proprietary drivers these days, but that's about as far as it goes with openness.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		You can grab the latest version of the <a href="https://snapcraft.io/steam?_ga=2.213684692.1930943970.1666365900-1422490395.1666365900" rel="external nofollow">Steam Snap in the Snap Store</a>. Canonical notes that those who want to help test game compatibility can switch their Snap install to an "edge" version, then file reports on individual games, which show up in its <a href="https://github.com/canonical/steam-snap/discussions/categories/game-reports" rel="external nofollow">GitHub discussion</a>.

			What makes the LG Smart Monitor more like a TV is that it supports the company’s Bluetooth Magic remote (though it’s unfortunately sold separately), and it runs webOS just like LG smart TVs, along with support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. The LG has two HDMI ports (one with eARC/ARC), a USB-C uplink with 65W power delivery for a laptop, three USB 2.0 ports for peripherals, and built-in Ethernet. There are no high-speed USB 3.0 ports or built-in webcam, though you could just connect your own. You can also rotate the monitor vertically if you’re into that, but just keep in mind that the stand requires a desk you can mount to and doesn’t have a traditional desktop standing option.

<h3>
	With Intel Raptor Lake release, reviews are also out everywhere. While most reviews show best in the world performance, there’s a huge power usage issue.
</h3>

<p>
	After a long wait, Intel finally released its Raptor Lake series of processors. Based on the same LGA1700 platform like its predecessor Alder Lake, Intel promised unparalleled performance in Raptor Lake.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Initially, three main processors are now released in the market. The Core i9-13900K, the Core i7-13700K and the Core i5-13600K. Along with them, Intel also releases the KF version of these same processors, which do not come with any basic built-in graphics chip.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While i9-13900K is priced at $589, i7-13700K comes at $409 and i5-13600K costs $319. The difference between these processors is that i9 13900K comes with 8 performance and 16 efficient cores. The i7-13700K on the other hand has the same 8 performance cores but cuts out the efficient cores to 8. The i5-13600K processor cuts out the performance cores to 6 but maintains the same efficient cores at 8.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full">

	<figcaption>
		<em>Intel Raptor Lake Desktop Processors. Credit: Intel.</em>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	Many sites have not mentioned one important upgrade in these processors. The Intel Core i9-13900K not only comes with a 36MB L3 Cache, but it also comes with a massive 32MB L2 cache divided between cores. It was something which we had <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/next-gen-intel-processors-might-come-with-32-mb-l2-cache/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="Next-Gen Intel Processors Might Come With 32 MB L2 Cache">mentioned earlier</a> as a possibility. A big L2 cache can give a big boost to the performance.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unlike AMD Ryzen 7000, Intel Raptor Lake series supports both DDR4 and DDR5 RAM.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With their release, Intel has removed the restriction on the release of their reviews. Hence, many sites have already made their reviews public. The reviews are great to say the least. We will look at three of them in relation to gaming performance.
</p>

<h3>
	Tom’s Hardware Review of Intel Raptor Lake
</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full">
	<img alt="Toms-Hardware-Review-Of-Intel-Raptor-Lak" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="538" width="720" src="https://ourdigitech.com/ServerSide/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Toms-Hardware-Review-Of-Intel-Raptor-Lake-Gaming-Performance-Average-FPS-1440p.webp">

	<a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-core-i9-13900k-core-i5-13600k-cpu-review" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">Tom’s Hardware reviewed</a> all three processors. The winner was outright visible.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As far as gaming performance benchmarks are concerned, Intel i9-13900K completely defeats its opposition, including the likes of AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processors. Not to forget it being significantly faster than previous gen Intel Alder Lake processors like Core i9 12900K.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But the more interesting CPU is the $319 processor that is Intel Core i5-13600K. The i5-13600K manages to defeat all AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors, including the significantly higher priced AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. The only AMD Ryzen processor faster than the i5-13600K is the gaming oriented Ryzen 5800X3D, <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/amd-ryzen-7-5800x3d-is-a-game-changer-literally/" title="AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Is A Game Changer, Literally" rel="external nofollow">which comes with a huge L3 cache</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Tom’s Hardware however found big issue in the power usage and temperatures.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
	<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized">
		<img alt="Toms-Hardware-Core-i9-13900K-Power-Usage" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.60" height="516" width="682" src="https://ourdigitech.com/ServerSide/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Toms-Hardware-Core-i9-13900K-Power-Usage.webp">

			<em>Core i9-13900K Power Usage. Credit: Tom’s Hardware.</em>

	</figure>
</div>

<p>
	When tested without any limits, they found that Intel i9 13900K could hit a huge 308W power consumption and it hits the 100 C limit regularly. It must be mentioned here that the 308W power usage is of the CPU alone, that too at stock settings. This is a massive problem. However, might not be a big issue when gaming.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here too, both i9-13900K and i5-13600K defeats the competition. In average FPS, Intel Core i9-13900K and i5-13600K are faster than all AMD Ryzen 7000 processors and also Intel Alder Lake processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Three things to notice here. In their benchmarks, unlike Tom’s Hardware, Ryzen 7 5800X3D is slower than Ryzen 7950X, which is ideally how it should be – depends on the games tested. Second, a $319 Intel Core i5-13600K again beats AMD’s top of the line $699 Ryzen 9 7950X processor in gaming as far as average FPS is concerned. Third important thing is, while average FPS is higher in i5-13600K, it’s 1% FPS is lower than many others like AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X, Ryzen 7 7700X, Ryzen 7 5800X3D and also Intel’s Core i9-12900K.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Lower 1% FPS means games might hit higher FPS on average, but might cause slight jitters or might lag a bit. Overall, for smoother gameplay, low 1% FPS is quite important. So 1% FPS performance should also be considered before deciding upon things.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Coming to power consumption, Igor’sLab gives some fascinating numbers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full">

	<figcaption>

	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	When tested to the max, Intel Core i9-13900K reached a huge 280W in power consumption, peaking at 286W. Intel Core i5-13600K on the hand reaches 154W. But there’s more to it. These are power usage at max loads. They are not maxed out by common users, including gamers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full">
	<img alt="Igors-Lab-Intel-Raptor-Lake-Gaming-Max-P" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="428" width="720" src="https://ourdigitech.com/ServerSide/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Igors-Lab-Intel-Raptor-Lake-Gaming-Max-Power-Draw-A-Total-War-Saga-TROY.webp">
	<figcaption>
		Intel Raptor Lake Gaming Max Power Draw In A Total War Saga TROY.
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	While gaming, the average power consumption of Intel Core i9-13900K is 110W. In most games it is around 100W. Which is lower than what AMD Ryzen 9 7950X consumes. The Core i5-13600K too consumes 98W. This means the CPU is not consuming too much power while gaming and the huge power usage figures we see above is for highly specialized workloads that too at max performance.

	</figure>
</div>

<p>
	TechPowerUP reviewed both <a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-13900k/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">Intel Core i9-13900K</a> and <a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i5-13600k/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">Intel Core i5-13600K</a> individually. However, we are showing only the i5-13600K performance image as it contains the information for both the processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	TechPowerUP tested both the processors on 12 different games. The results were on the expected lines. Both i9-13900K and i5-13600K defeated them all.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, the power consumption is something which takes the cake.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
	<figure class="aligncenter size-full">
		<img alt="TechPowerUps-Intel-Raptor-Lake-i9-13900K" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="108.22" height="720" width="423" src="https://ourdigitech.com/ServerSide/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/TechPowerUps-Intel-Raptor-Lake-i9-13900K-Power-Consumption.webp">

		</figcaption>
	</figure>
</div>

<p>
	At max load, here too, Core i9-13900K hits 283W. However, once all the restrictions are removed, Intel’s Core 13900K manages to hit a massive 388W in power usage. With further increase till 399W when overclocked. Intel Core i5-13600K too is not far behind. It reaches 186W at stock, 200W without power limits and 277W when overclocked. Again, this is CPU only power usage, that too at max load. It’s the not same in gaming.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
	<figure class="aligncenter size-full">
		<img alt="TechPowerUps-Intel-Raptor-Lake-i9-13900K" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="108.22" height="720" width="423" src="https://ourdigitech.com/ServerSide/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/TechPowerUps-Intel-Raptor-Lake-i9-13900K-Power-Consumption-While-Gaming.webp">
		<figcaption>
			<em>Intel Raptor Lake i9-13900K Power Consumption While Gaming. Credit: TechPowerUp.</em>
		</figcaption>
	</figure>
</div>

<p>
	When gaming, Intel Core i9-13900K hits an average of 118W and 139W when overclocked. Intel Core i5-13600K, on the other hand, has an average of 73W power usage while gaming and reached 116W when overclocked.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This again shows the same thing. Intel Raptor Lake processors can use a lot of power when required, but they are not doing so in gaming.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	TechPowerUP reviews mentioned some things which are really important. The Core i9-13900K could hit 5.8 GHz boost speeds on only two cores, at least on the CPU they got to test. Additionally, Core i5-13600K has no Turbo Boost 3.0 in it. What’s worse that they mention that in both the processors, when a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot is in use, the graphics card PCIe slot limits itself to just x8 instead of x16. This can be a major issue depending on the graphics card.
</p>

<h3>
	Conclusion
</h3>

<p>
	We aren’t quite sure where to start. Out of many reviews, we chose 3 which we felt would summaries everything easily. There are many others which we did not cover, like the <a href="https://www.anandtech.com/show/17601/intel-core-i9-13900k-and-i5-13600k-review" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">AnandTech</a> one, which many might find too detailed and complex. We suggest everyone to go through all the above ones and see it for themselves what’s best for them. It’s never ideal to decide by seeing just one.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As far as the CPUs are concerned. There’s no doubt that Intel Raptor Lake processors are above all in performance. At least as far as gaming is concerned, that is. When one takes Tom’s Hardware’s performance numbers into accounts, both the processors are about 10-15% faster than their previous generation Alder Lake counterparts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the power draw is a huge concern, even if we take just gaming power usage into the account. If performance has increased 10-15%, power usage has increased similarly too. Let us not forget there’s a huge energy problem happening in the world due to the war. There are going to be major power cuts happening in many parts of the world. Additional power usage is something people cannot afford. Especially during these times.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Compared to AMD Ryzen 7000 series, Intel Raptor Lake absolutely takes the cake in gaming performance. It’s not only faster, it’s cheaper both as a processor and a platform. Also remember, Intel Raptor Lake technically is still on the 10nm process which Intel calls Intel 7 process as its comparable to the 7nm process of it’s rivals. Whereas, AMD Ryzen 7000 is on the latest gen 5nm process. So Intel consuming more power is expected, but Intel easily beating AMD is not.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some important points need to be made about AMD Ryzen 7000. It supports only DDR5 RAM and has a new AM5 CPU slot where the pins are on the motherboard and not on the CPU, unlike previous-gen AMD processors, making them extremely expensive. This has meant that when someone goes to make an AMD Ryzen 7000 PC, they will need to buy not only an expensive motherboard, but expensive DDR5 RAM too. So big is the price issue that, if reports are to be believed, AMD has decided to massively cut the production of its Ryzen 7000 processors due to a big lack of demand.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Compare that to Intel Raptor Lake processors, which also run on Alder Lake supporting previous-gen Intel 600 series motherboards. They also don’t require relatively expensive DDR5 RAM to run. So both expensive motherboard and RAM sticks are not necessarily required if price is a concern.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It means Ryzen 7000 as a platform is really expensive when compared to Intel currently.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If we were to recommend a processor, Intel Core i5-13600K is an ideal choice. It’s great for gaming and does not use tremendous amount of power that i9-13900K does.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Intel Core i9-13900K, however, is on another level. If we ignore the claims that Intel has made about its processor, we are not sure how much the silicon inside it can take with so much max power usage. Still, benchmark reviews show that if power usage is not an issue, it’s the new king in the processor market.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unless AMD manages to outperform Intel with it’s <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/amd-to-release-not-1-but-3-ryzen-7000-cpus-with-3d-v-cache/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="AMD To Release Not 1, But 3 Ryzen 7000 CPUs With 3D V-Cache">next-gen 3D V-Cache</a> 7950X3D, 7900X3D or 7800X3D processors, which it possibly might, Intel is expected to not only be the best but also be the fastest one around in gaming processors.
</p>

			If you played The Elder Scrolls Online using Google’s <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/29/23378713/google-stadia-shutting-down-game-streaming-january-2023" rel="external nofollow">now-doomed Stadia cloud gaming service</a>, I have some good news. Bethesda is making good on <a href="https://twitter.com/TESOnline/status/1578037370481696769" rel="external nofollow">its promise</a> to let people port their ESO accounts over to Windows and Mac, including all their progress, characters, purchased content, achievements, and inventory items.

The company has also <a href="https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/63077" rel="external nofollow">posted the information on its website</a>. The one downside is that you won’t be able to transfer your account to the PlayStation or Xbox versions of the game, <a href="https://www.androidcentral.com/gaming/stadia/elder-scrolls-online-stadia-players-get-free-pc-copy-with-account-transfer" rel="external nofollow">according to Android Central</a>.

That’s especially true given that developers have mostly had to figure out what to do on the fly; Google’s announcement <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/30/23381106/google-stadia-shutdown-shocked-developers-too" rel="external nofollow">came as a surprise to them too</a>.

	Cherry's MX Ergo Clear switches are like tactile Browns, but lighter.

<div itemprop="articleBody">

		For the happily obsessed <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/03/the-ars-technica-guide-to-mechanical-keyboards/" rel="external nofollow">mechanical keyboard</a> enthusiast, there's no detail too minor on the journey to the perfect switch. Perfect key feel is worth poring over switch specs or even splicing parts from one mechanical switch with another to create the ideal Frankenswitch, as they've been named. One particular mod has attracted so much attention since being shared on a forum 11 years ago that Cherry turned it into a real product.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Cherry, the inventor of mechanical switches, announced the Cherry MX Ergo Clear this week, describing it as landing between tactile <a href="https://www.cherrymx.de/en/cherry-mx/mx-original/mx-brown.html" rel="external nofollow">Brown</a> and <a href="https://www.cherrymx.de/en/cherry-mx/mx-special/mx-clear.html" rel="external nofollow">Clear</a> switches. All three switches have 4 mm total travel and actuate at 2 mm, but the Ergo Clears require about 55 g of force to actuate, with that required force dropping to about 40 g at the switch's operating point. Clears, on the other hand, require 65 g before dropping to 55 g, while Browns require about 55 g and 45 g, respectively.

	<p>
		<em>The original enthusiast Ergo Clear mod used the spring from a Black switch (pictured). </em>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The idea for the Ergo Clear came from a post on the mechanical keyboard forum <a href="https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=16351.0" rel="external nofollow">Geekhack</a>. A user named "mtl" said Clears felt too heavy for him, "especially on the outer perimeter keys" of the keyboard. Mtl decided to concoct their own switch by combining the spring of a lighter (60 g actuation force) linear switch, the <a href="https://www.cherrymx.de/en/cherry-mx/mx-original/mx-black.html" rel="external nofollow">Cherry MX Black</a>, with the stem of a Clear one, creating a "switch that's easier to press than a Cherry Clear, and more tactile than a Cherry Brown," mtl said at the time.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		A spokesperson for Cherry told Ars Technica that the spring in the MX Ergo Clears is "similar" the MX Black switch's spring but has "an updated design."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Cherry's announcement didn't say whether the MX Ergo Clear uses the same switch as Cherry's Black switch (we reached out for comment and will let you know if we hear back). However, the end result is supposed to be of the same spirit.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Cherry even pre-lubricated the MX Ergo Clear switches in reference to the spray-on, PTFE dry lube that mtl said they dipped the springs and switches of their Frankenswitches into to reduce scratchiness.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Cherry, however, opted for a general-purpose lubricant from Krytox called GPL 205 GRADE 0 Grease, a common mechanical-switch lubricant, especially for linear switches. Cherry's so-called "high-precision automated process" is likely more efficient than the dipping process mtl used 11 years ago. Further, Cherry claims the process helps ensure the switch's durability claim of 50 million presses. Self-hacked Frankenswitches don't have such durability claims.

		Power of the enthusiast community
	</h2>

	<p>
		Cherry said it launched the MX Ergo Clear primarily "to address the DIY community." The German company called the new switches the "first special edition of a community switch from Cherry MX," leaving the door open for new designs born from the creative minds of the mechanical keyboard community.

		Cherry isn't the first vendor to make an "official" switch inspired by mtl's design. As pointed out by <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/20/23414131/cherry-mx-ergo-clear-mechanical-keyboard-switch" rel="external nofollow">The Verge</a>, Zeal PC, which <a href="https://zealpc.net/pages/about-us" rel="external nofollow">says</a> it "originated from Geekhack," originally sold the design as the Zealio V1 and, now, as the <a href="https://zealpc.net/products/zealio_v1_redux?variant=39352365449280" rel="external nofollow">Zealio V1 Redux</a>. And there are plenty of hobbyists who have Frankensteined their way to the Ergo Clear without the help of a corporation.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But with Cherry introducing the switch as an official design, we can reportedly expect to see it in prebuilt keyboards (Cherry didn't specify models or brands) and at official distributors backed by Cherry-level build quality and durability.

	<strong><span style="font-size:20px;">A days-long outage at Kakao has led to the resignation of a co-CEO and a reckoning over Big Tech’s extensive grip over the South Korean economy.</span></strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong><span style="color:#c0392b;">Life in South Korea went askew this past weekend.</span></strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Millions of people had trouble getting in touch with one another. Many could not pay for everyday items at convenience stores or order food and groceries. Travelers were left stranded because they were not able to book taxis, depriving drivers of income.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The chaos had one source: the Kakao suite of apps was down because of a fire at a data center. Started as a messaging app more than a decade ago, KakaoTalk has become a universe unto itself, with services covering banking and payments, ride-hailing, maps and games. It is found on more than 90 percent of phones in South Korea.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The days-long outage and the havoc it caused has stirred a national reckoning over the country’s growing dependency on Big Tech. The company and a government minister have apologized. Describing KakaoTalk as “nationwide infrastructure,” President Yoon Suk-yeol of South Korea ordered an investigation into the incident, invoking concerns about a monopoly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On Wednesday, four days after the fire at the data center in Pangyo, near Seoul, a senior Kakao executive took responsibility for the disruption and resigned. By then most Kakao services had been restored.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Still, questions remained about why the company seemed to lack a contingency plan to restore services more quickly. The fire also affected Naver, another internet conglomerate in South Korea, but that company was able to bounce back much more quickly than Kakao.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Namkoong Whon, a co-chief executive of Kakao, was ultimately in charge of the data operation. He said he “felt a great responsibility” for the outage and said the company would assist with a government probe into the fire.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Hong Eun-taek, Kakao’s other co-chief, will now hold sole leadership of the company. Joining Mr. Namkoong at the news conference, he said Kakao plans to compensate businesses that had taken a hit from the outage and ensure another outage is prevented.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“We caused a great inconvenience to everyone,” said Mr. Namkoong, 50. “I know that now more than ever it will take a long time and lots of effort to gain back the trust that we have lost.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Multiple groups of customers are preparing a class-action suit against Kakao, according to a Korean news outlet. Lawyers have claimed that the accident was the result of “negligence” and inadequate preparations. Kakao’s stock price dropped sharply in Seoul on Monday, the first day of trading after the outage, but had pared most of the losses by Wednesday.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Kakao and Naver often draw comparisons to China’s WeChat, a so-called superapp that’s an amalgam of messaging, payment, delivery services and more. In South Korea, the rapid growth of the internet behemoths has invited scrutiny comparable to that faced by the country’s “chaebols,” the family-run conglomerates that have long dominated the country’s economy.
</p>

	Next-gen Thunderbolt will auto-switch from 80 to 120Gbps with fancy monitors.
</h3>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<p>
		Intel announced further details about the next generation of Thunderbolt today. The company wouldn't commit to a name for the upcoming specification or a release date for what we hope will be called, simply, Thunderbolt 5. However, we do know that the next Thunderbolt will support up to 80Gbps bidirectional bandwidth and be able to transmit data at up to 120Gbps.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Will it be called Thunderbolt 5? Hopefully
	</h2>

	<p>
		In a meeting with the press, Jason Ziller, general manager of the Client Connectivity Division at Intel, said the next version of Thunderbolt isn't named yet. However, he noted that Intel has typically taken a simple approach to Thunderbolt naming.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Ziller acknowledged that the USB-IF's naming scheme for USB specifications is "very confusing." The USB-IF yesterday published the unfortunately named <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/usb-c-can-hit-120gbps-with-newly-published-usb4-version-2-0-spec/" rel="external nofollow">USB4 Version 2.0</a> spec and, more recently, ditched its recommended <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/usb-if-says-goodbye-to-confusing-superspeed-usb-branding/" rel="external nofollow">SuperSpeed branding</a> for consumers in favor of performance-based names like USB 40Gbps.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"[Users] don't need to have [features] built into the name or a fancy logo on the side of a notebook, where you can't even see it anyway," Ziller said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		That said, there's hope for a logically sound name for the upcoming spec, like Thunderbolt 5.
	</p>

	<h2>
		120Gbps operation
	</h2>

	<p>
		Unlike with the move from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 4, Intel's giving the next generation of Thunderbolt potential for a big jump in speed—but there's a catch.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Whatever it's called, next-generation Thunderbolt will be able to transmit data out across three lanes at 40Gbps each, for a total of 120Gbps. Simultaneously, the port will be able to receive data at up to 40Gbps, Intel says, for other devices, like an external SSD. This differs from Thunderbolt 4, which operates at up to 40Gbps in either direction using a total of four lanes. This is similar to USB4 Version 2.0 spec, except 120Gbps is optional with the USB-IF's spec.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		This 120Gbps mode, so to speak, will only activate when a high-performance display is connected. In normal use, though, the next <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/thunderbolt-hits-80gbps-in-demo-equaling-usb4-version-2-0-speeds/" rel="external nofollow">Thunderbolt will operate at up to 80Gbps</a> in either direction (still twice the rate of Thunderbolt 4), with two lanes for transmitting data and two lanes for receiving data.
	</p>

	<figure>
		<figcaption>
			<div>
				<img alt="5-4-980x551.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="404" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/5-4-980x551.jpg">
			</div>

			<div>
				<em>The next generation of Thunderbolt will operate in one of two modes.</em>
			</div>

			<div>
				<em>Intel</em>
			</div>
		</figcaption>
	</figure>

	<p>
		According to Ziller, the next Thunderbolt will automatically switch from 80/80Gbps operation to 120/40Gbps when connected to a display requiring more than 80Gbps. Intel is still working out how that automatic switching works but sees the next-gen spec supporting things like 8K HDR monitors, 10-bit HDR color, dual 480 Hz monitors, or a <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/01/samsung-brings-240-hz-refresh-rates-to-4k-monitors/" rel="external nofollow">4K monitor at 240 Hz</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Once Thunderbolt has been switched into 120Gbps mode, a pipe transmitting data out can handle more than just video, such as storage data, for example. But only a bandwidth-hungry display can activate the mode, because "that's really the most important thing that's gonna have very high bandwidth needs that are only going in one direction," Ziller said, noting the typically bidirectional nature of storage. And like with Thunderbolt 4, displays will get priority over other types of devices with next-gen Thunderbolt.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<figure>
		<figcaption>
			<div>
				<img alt="Inlte-Thunderbolt-5-demo-980x515.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="71.53" height="378" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Inlte-Thunderbolt-5-demo-980x515.jpg">

			</div>

			<div>
				<em>Intel</em>
			</div>
		</figcaption>
	</figure>

	<p>
		Intel also shared a brief pre-recorded video demoing early prototype silicon with the new tech using 80Gbps bidirectional bandwidth. The system was reportedly connected to an 8K resolution display and an external SSD.
	</p>

	<h2>
		More speed for external storage and graphics
	</h2>

	<p>
		Like with Thunderbolt 4 (and unlike with <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/breaking-down-how-usb4-goes-where-no-usb-standard-has-gone-before/" rel="external nofollow">USB4</a>), PCIe tunneling support is mandatory for the next generation of Thunderbolt, which will also double PCIe data throughput from Thunderbolt 4's 32Gbps to 64Gbps.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		This should enable faster storage, particularly in extreme needs, like when moving large amounts of data back and forth between an external SSD. It could also improve performance in devices like external graphics cards (eGPUs) and video capture cards.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But don't get too excited yet. Next-gen Thunderbolt products are likely months to years away, but product releases with PCIe-related technologies could be even slower. Today, Thunderbolt 4-based SSDs, eGPUs, and video-capture cards still aren't readily available.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Next-gen Thunderbolt cables
	</h2>

	<p>
		Thanks to a new "signaling technology," the next version of Thunderbolt will be backward-compatible with previous generations of Thunderbolt, USB, and DisplayPort, Ziller said. Further, Thunderbolt cables you already own may support the new protocol.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Thunderbolt's next generation will work with the same passive Thunderbolt 4 cables available today, as long as they're not longer than 3.3 feet (1 meter). For longer distances, you'll need new cables, for which the spec isn't yet defined.
	</p>
</div>

	<div itemprop="articleBody">
		<h2>
			For creators and gamers
		</h2>

		<p>
			Not surprisingly, Intel expects creators and gamers to be the first adopters of this technology. These are the types of people using high-resolution, high-speed displays, sometimes in multi-monitor setups. Such users are already pressed for bandwidth, Team Blue said, with, for example, a pair of 4K monitors alone requiring about 34Gbps, near Thunderbolt 4's 40Gbps max.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Intel's Ziller also pointed to the growth of <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/09/new-8k-video-footage-showcases-titanic-shipwreck-in-stunning-detail/" rel="external nofollow">8K video</a> and how time-consuming it is to transport those large files. Next-gen Thunderbolt should enable more everyday tasks to complete in half the time, Intel claimed.
		</p>

		<figure>

					<img alt="2-4-980x551.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="404" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/2-4-980x551.jpg">

				<div>
					<em>120Gbps will be optional for USB4 Version 2.0 but mandatory for the next Thunderbolt spec.</em>
				</div>

				<div>
					<em>Intel</em>
				</div>
			</figcaption>
		</figure>

		<p>
			Intel also sees hardcore PC gamers using the next Thunderbolt for products like docks for live game-streaming studios and video capture. Live-game capture at 2560×1440 resolution at a speedy 240 frames per second requires 30Gbps, Intel claimed, emphasizing the need for more bandwidth.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Gamers are also facing <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/03/warzone-dev-says-game-is-losing-players-over-insane-download-sizes/" rel="external nofollow">increasing game download sizes</a>. Ziller pointed to gamers potentially storing large games files on external SSDs via the new Thunderbolt for easy transport. And despite the current, aforementioned lack of eGPU products, Intel still showed optimism about its next-gen tech being leveraged to give gaming capabilities to ultralight, GPU-free laptops.
		</p>

		<h2>
			Alliance with USB4 and other technologies
		</h2>

		<p>
			The next Thunderbolt will continue a trend Intel started in 2019, when it made the Thunderbolt protocol royalty-free, allowing <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/03/thunderbolt-3-becomes-usb4-as-intels-interconnect-goes-royalty-free/" rel="external nofollow">Thunderbolt 3 to become USB4</a>. Subsequently, Intel built Thunderbolt 4 off USB4, and the next Thunderbolt is built on the USB4 Version 2.0 protocol. As is the case between the original USB4 spec and Thunderbolt 4, the new Thunderbolt and USB4 Version 2.0 will use the same physical layer (PHY). Intel is also building next-gen Thunderbolt upon the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/all-displayport-2-0-products-are-now-displayport-2-1-vesa-says/" rel="external nofollow">DisplayPort 2.1</a> spec that VESA released on Monday.
		</p>

		<h3>
			PAM-3
		</h3>

		<p>
			Ziller told the press that Thunderbolt's expanded bandwidth is enabled by the PHY using PAM-3 signal encoding, which uses 3 bits of data per clock cycle instead of 2 bits. This enables the transmission of more data in the same amount of time, as well as the ability to move to higher speeds without requiring new cables or connectors, he said.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			As explained by <a href="https://www.anandtech.com/show/16858/intel-executive-posts-thunderbolt-5-photo-80-gbps-and-pam3-then-deletes-it" rel="external nofollow">AnandTech</a> in August, when news of next-gen Thunderbolt's potential 80Gbps capabilities leaked:
		</p>

		<blockquote>
			<p>
				Traditionally we talk about NRZ encoding, which just allows for a 0 or a 1 to be transmitted, or a single bit. The natural progression is a scheme allowing two bits to be transferred, and this is called PAM-4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation), with the 4 being the demarcation for how many different variants two bits could be seen (either as 00, 01, 10, or 11). PAM-4, at the same frequency, thus, has [two times] the bandwidth of an NRZ connection. ...
			</p>

			<p>

			</p>

			<p>
				"When we compare NRZ to PAM-3 and PAM-4, we can see the rate of data transfer for PAM-3 is in the middle of NRZ and PAM-4. The reason why PAM-3 is being used in this case is to achieve that higher bandwidth without the extra limitations that PAM-4 requires to be enabled.
			</p>
		</blockquote>

		<h2>
			Next-gen Thunderbolt’s release date and more unknowns
		</h2>

		<p>
			We don't yet have a full picture of the next Thunderbolt spec, which Ziller described as in "early phases of development." The exec could not confirm various specifics, including power or minimum USB data requirements (Thunderbolt 4's requirement is 10Gbps).
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			As you might have guessed, the release date for Thunderbolt 5, or whatever Intel names it, isn't confirmed yet, either.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			In a press release today, Intel said it would share more information about the next generation of Thunderbolt, including its final name, next year.

	USB-IF's new USB-C spec supports up to 120Gbps across three lanes.
</h3>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We've said it before, and we'll say it again: USB-C is confusing. A USB-C port or cable can support a range of speeds, power capabilities, and other features, depending on the specification used. Today, USB-C can support various data transfer rates, from 0.48Gbps (USB 2.0) all the way to 40Gbps (<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/breaking-down-how-usb4-goes-where-no-usb-standard-has-gone-before/" rel="external nofollow">USB4</a>, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4). Things are only about to intensify as today the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) <a href="https://www.usb.org/document-library/usb4r-specification-v20" rel="external nofollow">published</a> the USB4 Version 2.0 spec. It adds optional support for 80Gbps bidirectional bandwidth as well the optional ability to send or receive data at up to 120Gbps.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The USB-IF first gave us word of <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/usb-c-naming-to-somehow-get-worse-with-usb4-version-2-0/" rel="external nofollow">USB4 Version 2.0</a> in September, saying it would support a data transfer rate of up to 80Gbps in either direction (40Gbps per lane, four lanes total), thanks to a new physical layer architecture (PHY) based on PAM-3 signal encoding. For what it's worth, Intel also demoed <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/thunderbolt-hits-80gbps-in-demo-equaling-usb4-version-2-0-speeds/" rel="external nofollow">Thunderbolt at 80Gbps</a> but hasn't released an official spec yet.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		USB4 Version 2.0 offers a nice, potential bump over the original USB4 spec, which introduced optional support for 40Gbps operation. You just have to be sure to check the spec sheets to know what sort of performance you're getting.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Once USB4 Version 2.0 products come out, you'll be able to hit 80Gbps with <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/usb-c-mandate-moves-forward-in-eu-wireless-charging-regulation-could-follow/" rel="external nofollow">USB-C</a> passive cables that currently operate at 40Gbps, but you'll have to buy a new cable if you want a longer, active 80Gbps.
	</p>

	<h2>
		120Gbps is optional
	</h2>

	<p>
		Today, the USB-IF confirmed that USB4 Version 2.0 will takes things even further by optionally supporting a data transfer rate of up to 120Gbps across three lanes.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Optionally for certain applications, such as driving very-high performance USB4-based displays, the USB Type-C signal interface can be configured asymmetrically to deliver up to 120Gbps in one direction, while retaining 40Gbps in the other direction," the USB-IF's announcement said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Typically, a USB4 Version 2.0 port that supports 120Gbps operation will both transmit and receive data at 80Gbps. When a product connects to the port, "the USB4 discovery process managed by system software will determine if the preferred mode of operation is the 120Gbps configuration. After initially connecting at 80Gbps, the port will then transition into 120Gbps operation," Brad Saunders, USB-IF Board Chair and CEO, told Ars Technica.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The new spec supports both transmitting and receiving data at 120Gbps; however, Saunders said "the most likely" application will see data being sent from a computer to a high-performance monitor at 120Gbps, with a 40Gbps lane left available for sending data to the system.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The new USB-C spec will appeal to setups with extreme display needs, including resolutions beyond 4K, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/07/alienware-debuts-480-hz-refresh-rate-with-new-17-inch-laptops/" rel="external nofollow">gamer-level refresh rates</a>, HDR color, and multi-monitors. Bandwidth demands from the likes of creators and gamers continue to push the original spec's 40Gbps limit.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We could also see external SSDs and external GPUs also using the USB4 Version 2.0 protocol. But both remain more niche products, even among today's USB4 and Thunderbolt options.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Also included in the new USB4 Version 2.0 spec is support for USB 3.2 tunneling at 20Gbps, up from 10Gbps previously. And the new protocol supports the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/all-displayport-2-0-products-are-now-displayport-2-1-vesa-says/" rel="external nofollow">DisplayPort 2.1</a> spec that VESA announced today, plus PCIe 4.0.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		With the USB4 Version 2.0 spec published today, we don't expect to see supporting products for "at least 12 to 18 months," the USB-IF said in a statement to <a href="https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/new-usb-4-version-2-reaches-80gbps-120gbps-if-you-push-it/" rel="external nofollow">CNET</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		When those products come out, though, the USB-IF hopes they aren't introduced to consumers as "USB4 Version 2.0" or even some type of "SuperSpeed USB." After 12 years, the USB-IF no longer recommends that vendors use terms like "<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/09/usb-if-says-goodbye-to-confusing-superspeed-usb-branding/" rel="external nofollow">SuperSpeed USB</a> 20Gbps" (for the spec called USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, for example) and instead opt for names like "USB 20Gbps."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If the USB-IF had its way, products using its new open standard will be described as "USB 80Gbps." Ultimately, though, the USB-IF has no control over this, and you'll see plenty of vendors not list USB speeds, and some use specification names, like USB4 Version 2.0. The <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/09/usb-if-is-once-again-trying-to-logo-its-way-out-of-usb-c-confusion/" rel="external nofollow">USB-IF's recommended logos</a> focus on speed and power delivery.
	</p>

	<p>
