	Apple’s new Arm licensing deal covers the tech behind iPhone and Mac chips for many years to come.
</h3>

<div>

		<p>
			Apple has struck a deal with the chip design company Arm that goes past 2040, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-inks-new-long-term-deal-with-arm-chip-technology-filing-2023-09-05/" rel="external nofollow">as reported by Reuters</a>. A disclosure noting the arrangement appeared in new documents Arm filed as part of its planned IPO.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			The statement about the deal doesn’t have much additional detail. “We have entered into a new long-term agreement with Apple that extends beyond 2040, continuing our longstanding relationship of collaboration with Apple and Apple’s access to the Arm architecture,” <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1973239/000119312523228059/d393891df1a.htm" rel="external nofollow">Arm said in the document</a>. But given how much Apple relies on Arm’s designs for the custom chips powering its most popular and profitable products, like the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch, in addition to the upcoming Vision Pro, it signals that Apple plans to continue utilizing Arm’s technology platform for a very long time to come.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>
			It’s not just Apple that has a long-term interest in Arm. In its documents, Arm also said that some major technology companies, including AMD, Apple, Google, Intel, Nvidia, Samsung, and TSMC, have “indicated an interest” in buying “up to an aggregate” of $735 million in Arm shares.

	The Google story begins in 1995 at Stanford University. Larry Page was considering Stanford for grad school and Sergey Brin, a student there, was assigned to show him around.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By some accounts, they disagreed about nearly everything during that first meeting, but by the following year they struck a partnership. Working from their dorm rooms, they built a search engine that used links to determine the importance of individual pages on the World Wide Web. They called this search engine Backrub.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Soon after, Backrub was renamed Google (phew). The name was a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros and aptly reflected Larry and Sergey's mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the next few years, Google caught the attention of not only the academic community, but Silicon Valley investors as well. In August 1998, Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote Larry and Sergey a check for $100,000, and Google Inc. was officially born. With this investment, the newly incorporated team made the upgrade from the dorms to their first office: a garage in suburban Menlo Park, California, owned by Susan Wojcicki (employee #16 and former CEO of YouTube). Clunky desktop computers, a ping pong table, and bright blue carpet set the scene for those early days and late nights. (The tradition of keeping things colorful continues to this day.)
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Even in the beginning, things were unconventional: from Google’s initial server (made of Lego) to the first “Doodle” in 1998: a stick figure in the logo announcing to site visitors that the entire staff was playing hooky at the Burning Man Festival. “Don't be evil” captured the spirit of our intentionally unconventional methods. In the years that followed, the company expanded rapidly — hiring engineers, building a sales team, and introducing the first company dog, Yoshka. Google outgrew the garage and eventually moved to its current headquarters (a.k.a.“The Googleplex”) in Mountain View, California. The spirit of doing things differently made the move. So did Yoshka.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The relentless search for better answers continues to be at the core of everything we do. Today, Google makes hundreds of products used by billions of people across the globe, from YouTube and Android to Gmail and, of course, Google Search. Although we’ve ditched the Lego servers and added just a few more company dogs, our passion for building technology for everyone has stayed with us — from the dorm room, to the garage, and to this very day.
</p>

	It looks like Microsoft is planning to bring a change in OneDrive storage policies. The new change, which the company states is aimed at “improving your Microsoft 365 experience,” will result in photos uploaded to OneDrive counting twice against the storage quota.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	An email shared by <a href="https://www.drwindows.de/news/onedrive-in-alben-einsortierte-fotos-verbrauchen-in-zukunft-doppelten-speicherplatz" rel="external nofollow">Dr. Windows</a> says starting October 16, 2023, data from photos saved in your Gallery and in your albums will each count separately against your total Microsoft storage quota. This will result in the same photos taking up twice the storage.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those unaware, Gallery is where all images uploaded to OneDrive end up. However, users also get an optional Albums feature, which may be used to create custom collections of photos and images on the site.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For what it’s worth, Microsoft says in the email it is giving customers a one-year storage boost to address the upcoming change that may affect their storage quotas. The email does not specify the size of the storage boost or whether it will be the same for all customers or calculated on an individual basis. However, the extra storage will expire one year after it has been assigned to an account.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although Microsoft didn’t elaborate on this in the email, assigning photos independent storage in albums and the gallery might allow users to keep photos in albums even if they delete them from the gallery and vice versa.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft may have more changes in store for OneDrive. A<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-may-be-making-big-onedrive-announcements-on-october-3/" rel="external nofollow"> recent report</a> shared a teaser poster for upcoming OneDrive-related announcements on October 3rd. The company might be planning to give the service an AI makeover since that's what it has been focusing on lately
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft's <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/events/mppc-2023/" rel="external nofollow">Power Platform Conference</a> will be held in Las Vegas from October 3rd to 5th. It is possible that the October 3rd date could be referring to the conference.

	Meta announced today that it will remove the News tab from Facebook's bookmarks section in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in early December. In <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2023/09/an-update-on-facebook-news-in-europe/" rel="external nofollow">a press release</a>, Meta stated, "As a company, we have to focus our time and resources on things people tell us they want to see more of on the platform, including short form video."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The News<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/facebook-news-a-section-dedicated-to-bringing-news-and-journalism-is-now-in-testing/" rel="external nofollow"> tab was first launched</a> in 2019 as a dedicated section for news articles and headlines within the Facebook app. Its removal in Europe follows Meta's announcement in July that it would <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/facebook-news-will-exclude-us-publishers-with-ties-to-political-entities/" rel="external nofollow">no longer pay U.S. publishers</a> to supply content for Facebook News.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Meta, news currently makes up less than 3% of global content users see in their Facebook feeds. After the European rollout in December, the News tab will only remain available in the U.S. and Australia.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>The changes affecting the Facebook News feature will not otherwise impact Meta's products and services in these countries. People will still be able to view links to news articles on Facebook.</em>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>European news publishers will continue to have access to their Facebook accounts and Pages, where they can post links to their stories and direct people to their websites in the way any other individual or organization can.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While news articles will still appear in users' main feeds, UK, France and Germany publishers will lose direct access to the News tab. Meta says it will honor all existing deals with publishers through December but will not sign any new deals or develop new news products for those markets going forward.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The decision comes after Facebook and Instagram <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/metas-facebook-and-instagram-services-begin-blocking-news-content-and-links-in-canada/" rel="external nofollow">blocked news content and links in Canada</a>. The new <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-confirms-it-will-remove-canadian-news-links-from-search-and-more-in-canada/" rel="external nofollow">Online News Act requires</a> that social media companies make monetary deals with news organizations to distribute links from those news outlets on online services.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The move, on the other hand, comes amid increasing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/meta-gets-hit-with-a-13-billion-fine-by-the-eu-for-sending-personal-data-to-the-us/" rel="external nofollow">regulatory scrutiny in Europe</a> over Meta's data privacy practices. Also, Meta will reportedly <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/meta-will-reportedly-launch-paid-subscriptions-for-ad-free-facebook-instagram/" rel="external nofollow">offer an ad-free paid subscription</a> in the region.
</p>

	AMD at Gamescom 2023 <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-kills-nvidias-4060-ti-8gb16gb-with-rx-7700-xt-rx-7800-xt-takes-on-rtx-4070/" rel="external nofollow">has unveiled</a> its latest range of mid-range Radeon RX 7000 series cards. The duo of cards are the RX 7800 XT and the RX 7700 XT. Now, newly leaked gaming benchmark data provides an early glimpse of how these new graphics cards stack up against competing NVIDIA's RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 Ti models.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to data sourced from HD-Tecnologia and VideoCardZ, the RX 7800 XT demonstrates on average 0.5% higher performance compared to the RTX 4070 across a range of game titles tested. Without ray tracing enabled, this lead extends to 6.9%. However, with ray tracing, the RTX 4070 claws back a 11.6% advantage.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The RX 7700 XT exhibits an even more commanding lead over the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, delivering 16% faster speeds on average across the benchmarked games. With ray tracing disabled, this jumps to nearly 16% higher performance. The RTX 4060 Ti only pulls ahead by 5.4% when restricting tests to ray tracing workloads.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Additional leaked 3DMark benchmarks reinforce AMD's dominance in rasterization workloads. The RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT outpace their NVIDIA counterparts in Fire Strike, Time Spy, and Time Spy Extreme. Only in the ray tracing-focused Port Royal test does the RTX 4070 top the RX 7800 XT's score.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In case you missed it, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-kills-nvidias-4060-ti-8gb16gb-with-rx-7700-xt-rx-7800-xt-takes-on-rtx-4070/" rel="external nofollow">AMD is pricing</a> the RX 7800 XT 16GB at $499, $100 below the RTX 4070 12GB. And the RX 7700 XT 16GB is priced at $449, $50 less than the RX 7800 XT.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In terms of other key specifications, RX 7800 XT features 19.5 Gbps memory and corresponding 624 GB/s, compared to the 6800 (XT)'s 16Gbps and 512 GB/s bandwidth. It has 64MB of Infinity (L3) cache. On the other hand, the RX 7700 XT features 18Gbps memory and 432 GB/s of memory bandwidth. In terms of the Infinity Cache, the 7700 XT has 48MB.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The official reviews will confirm whether these leaked benchmarks translate into real-world gaming experiences when the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT launch on September 6.

	Microsoft is launching a new program aimed at helping developers use and expand its AI-based <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/more-copilot-features-may-be-on-the-way-in-future-windows-11-builds/" rel="external nofollow">Copilot services</a>, and it has put in a familiar name to be in charge of that program.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Dona Sarkar, who is perhaps best known to Neowin readers for her previous leadership of the Windows Insider Program, announced today <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7104798191513964545/" rel="external nofollow">on her LinkedIn page</a>, that she is now heading up a new "AI and Copilot Extensibility Dev Program" at Microsoft.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In her post, Sarkar stated:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>I started writing code in 1998 (!) and over the past 25 years (!!) I have seen the magical things that being a developer can do. Over the past year'ish, my team and I have been getting skilled up in all things Generative AI and getting hands-on in code again. I’ve LOVED this and realized there has never been a more exciting time to be a developer…so I'm headed back to my dev roots.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Sarkar stated she would report to Microsoft's office of its Chief Technology Office and all of Copilot's owners to help create this new program. She says it will be designed to help third-party developers access and expand Copilot services so they can use their own data to create AI-based products.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	She added that developers will be "seeing *a lot* of tutorials, blogs, videos, code samples, skilling stuff, and experimental content from me in the upcoming weeks". The plan is to have an official launch of the program at Microsoft's Ignite conference, which will happen on November 15.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Sarkar was the head of Microsoft's Windows Insider Program for over three years <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/dona-sarkar-is-stepping-away-from-the-windows-insider-program/" rel="external nofollow">until her departure in 2019</a> to head up the advocacy and evangelism program for the Microsoft Power Platform. In 2021, she took on another new position, this time as Director of Tech for Microsoft Accessibility.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In her LinkedIn post today, Sarkar stated:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>While I am INCREDIBLY excited about this new opportunity, I'm also very sad. I have LOVED my 2.5 years in Accessibility. I have never learned so much about the human impact of tech before and you KNOW I will forever focus on making sure that people with disabilities, neurodiversity and mental health have equitable access to tech.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the meantime, developers with interest in extending Copilot services <a href="https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=v4j5cvGGr0GRqy180BHbR8uW9OkQrllPiFpAfTkH5iNUNllWNU03SE5TMjhKM0dTR0E1Uko5SVA2OC4u" rel="external nofollow">can check out this poll</a> that will give Sarkar more info on how to handle her AI developer strategy.
</p>

		Microsoft was unlikely to dispute the designation of its Windows operating system, which dominates the PC industry, as a gatekeeper, these people said. But it has argued that Bing has a market share of just 3 percent, and further legal scrutiny would put it at a greater disadvantage.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If covered by the new rules, Bing would need to give users a choice of other search engines, including Google’s. Advisers have argued in Microsoft’s defense that this could end up boosting Google’s market share.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Separately, Apple argued that iMessage did not meet the threshold of user numbers at which the rules applied and therefore should not comply with obligations that include opening the service to rival apps such as Meta’s WhatsApp, said the two people.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Analysts have estimated that iMessage, which is built into every iPhone, iPad, and Mac, has as many as 1 billion users globally, but Apple has not disclosed any figures for several years. The decision is likely to hinge on how Apple and the EU define the market in which iMessage operates.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The European Commission, Apple, and Microsoft declined to comment.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		All large US tech companies, including Amazon, Google, and Meta, will have several of their services regulated under the DMA, people familiar with the legislation said. Chinese-owned TikTok will also be part of the list.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Meta’s Instagram and Facebook and Google’s search engine are all expected to be covered by the new rules, which are aimed at opening up markets and enabling competition from European start-ups.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Brussels is still deliberating over the inclusion of iMessage and Bing in the final list. The commission may open a probe to determine if these services should face the new obligations set out in the DMA.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The designation of the services is part of a long-running process of implementing the landmark rules, which become fully applicable next spring. The commission is already bracing itself for legal challenges before the EU courts in Luxembourg over its decisions.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		“The DMA will bring new competition to digital markets in Europe, and now it is up to the commission to make it work,” said Andreas Schwab, the MEP who led negotiation of the rules.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		This is not the first time tech companies have openly defied the commission, the EU executive, over digital rules. German online retailer Zalando and US tech giant Amazon have already taken the commission to court over allegations they are being unfairly targeted by the Digital Services Act, a second piece of digital legislation designed to set new standards to police the Internet.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Legal fights between tech giants and EU regulators come at a time of heightened scrutiny over their alleged anti-competitive behavior. This year Brussels threatened to break up Google over its alleged illegal practices in the adtech space.
	</p>

	HONG KONG/BEIJING, Sept 5 (Reuters) - China is set to launch a new state-backed investment fund that aims to raise about $40 billion for its semiconductor sector, two people familiar with the matter said, as the country ramps up efforts to catch up with the U.S. and other rivals.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is likely to be the biggest of three funds launched by the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, also known as the Big Fund.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Its target of 300 billion yuan ($41 billion) outdoes similar funds in 2014 and 2019, which according to government reports, raised 138.7 billion yuan and 200 billion yuan respectively.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One main area of investment will be equipment for chip manufacturing, said one of the two people and a third person familiar with the matter.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	President Xi Jinping has long stressed the need for China to achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductors. That need has become all the more pressing after Washington imposed a series of export control measures over the last couple of years, citing fears that Beijing could use advanced chips to boost its military capabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In October, the U.S. rolled out a sweeping sanctions package that cut China's access to advanced chipmaking equipment and U.S. allies Japan and the Netherlands have taken similar steps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new fund was approved by Chinese authorities in recent months, two of the people said.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	China's finance ministry is planning to contribute 60 billion yuan, said one person. Other contributors could not be immediately learned.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	All the sources declined to be identified as the discussions were confidential.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The State Council Information Office, which handles media queries on behalf of the government, the finance ministry and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Big Fund also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The fundraising process will likely take months and it was not immediately clear when the third fund will be launched or if further changes will be made to the plan, said the first two sources.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Backers of the Big Fund's previous two funds include the finance ministry and deep-pocketed state-owned entities such as China Development Bank Capital, China National Tobacco Corporation and China Telecom.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the years, the Big Fund has provided financing to China's two biggest chip foundries, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (0981.HK) and Hua Hong Semiconductor (688347.SS), as well as to Yangtze Memory Technologies, a maker of flash memory and a number of smaller companies and funds.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Despite those investments, China's chip industry has struggled to play a leading role in the global supply chain, especially for advanced chips.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>INVESTMENT MANAGERS</strong></span>
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	The Big Fund is considering hiring at least two institutions to invest the new fund's capital, said the three people.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Several senior officials and former officials at SINO-IC Capital, the sole manager for the Big Fund's first two funds, have been under investigation by China's anti-graft authority since 2021.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Even so, SINO-IC Capital is expected to remain one of the managers for the third fund, said two of the people.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	SINO-IC Capital did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Chinese officials have also reached out to China Aerospace Investment, the investment arm of state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, to discuss being one of the managers, said two of the people.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	China Aerospace Investment did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

	For those following the news surrounding Bethesda's <em>Starfield</em>, which is arguably one of the biggest games of the year, you are probably aware that the title has been <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-will-be-starfields-official-partner-on-pc-with-ryzen-and-radeon-optimizations/" rel="external nofollow">optimized for AMD</a>, which is why it runs the best on Radeon hardware, especially with the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-starfield-graphics-driver-lands-promises-major-performance-boosts/" rel="external nofollow">driver version 23.8.2</a>. And while Nvidia also has had <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-53713-driver-brings-support-and-optimizations-for-starfield/" rel="external nofollow">its own driver</a>, benchmarks do show that Team Red is performing better than Team Green GPUs, especially at the Ultra preset.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, over on the Team Blue camp, things haven't been any good, like at all. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/starfield-is-having-issues-with-running-on-intel-arc-gpus-improvments-are-coming-next-week/" rel="external nofollow">Users have reported different kinds of issues</a> like extremely slow load times, texture corruptions, and more, essentially making the game unplayable. In the worst-case scenario, the game isn't even launching for some.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Today, Intel has released its Windows beta driver for Arc which tackles some of these issues like slow loading times and texture issues. The company notes that the driver package size has been increased to ~685MB from the typical ~635MB. This additional 50MB might be due to how the driver is now handling pre-cached and pre-compiled shaders which will help to reduce the loading times. This should also help in those situations where the game even fails to launch due to failure in compiling shaders.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The full release notes for Intel Arc beta driver version 31.0.101.4672 are given below:

	This past week was about more than Starfield, though that's clearly the biggest thing in tech right now.
</h3>

<p>
	If you're anything like our team of writers, you've spent the entire past week reading about Starfield or enjoying early access to the game. You've probably forgotten to do some things, like water your plants or go to your day job. My guess is you also missed some news stories while exploring the cosmos. Luckily, I am here to help you catch up on the biggest stories from the past week.

	Starfield is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and some lucky folks can already play it. Early access for the game launched on September 1, 2023. Reviewers also had the chance to explore the expansive universe of Starfield.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To be honest, summarizing Starfield in a few paragraphs doesn't do it justice. I'll leave you with a snippet from our Managing Editor Jez Corden and point you toward his <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/starfield-review" rel="external nofollow">Starfield review</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Reviewing Starfield was a mission. It's unnecessary to emphasize how big it is. Bethesda's new IP spans a large quadrant of our Milky Way galaxy, with hundreds of star systems and planets loaded with potential gameplay. Starfield pushes its Creation Engine to the absolute limit, and cracks of age are indeed beginning to show. While aspects of Starfield's design could've used more iteration, it's one of Bethesda's most impressive cinematic titles. With incredible writing, its slow-burn stories snowball into immense moments, and tight RPG/FPS combat thrills in spaceship battles, grounded firefights, and zero-G death ballets — Starfield is a landmark experience with a bright future ahead of it."

</p>

<p>
	Pokémon is one of the most popular franchises in the world. With decades of new games and an ever-expanding list of creatures, Pokémon stands in a league of its own in many ways. While there are other games within the same genre, you could argue that the Pokémon IP is so popular that you can't directly compete with it. Instead, some companies create games with similar elements that have some key differences. That's the case with <a data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/11-bits-the-thaumaturge-is-a-gothic-twisted-version-of-pokemon" rel="external nofollow">The Thaumaturge</a>, a game that's set to come out later this year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Thaumaturge is an RPG that play testers compared to a dark, gritty, and gorier version of Pokémon. That may be just the game older Pokémon fans want. The game's protagonist has a gift of taming ethereal creatures. It features turn-based combat, which is part of the reason testers compared the game to Pokémon.

	In recent years, Google's YouTube platform has soared in popularity, with creators and viewers alike flocking to it for content of all kinds. Among the features introduced to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of social media is <a cmp-ltrk="Links" cmp-ltrk-idx="3" data-mrf-link="https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/building-youtube-shorts/" data-wpel-link="external" href="https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/building-youtube-shorts/" mrfobservableid="7470dc5b-3129-4e11-a7d9-47cf3fb5816b" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">YouTube Shorts</a>. Shorts, in theory, is a response to the success of platforms like <a cmp-ltrk="Links" cmp-ltrk-idx="4" data-mrf-link="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/08/17/nyc-tiktok-ban-comes-to-city-owned-devices/" data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/08/17/nyc-tiktok-ban-comes-to-city-owned-devices/" mrfobservableid="da45edc8-1463-40f3-8f13-1f5cfbcf1e4b" rel="external nofollow">TikTok</a>, offering users a way to create and share short-form video content.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, beneath the surface, there are indications that Google may be facing a Shorts problem on YouTube.
</p>

<h2>
	The rise and fall of YouTube Shorts
</h2>

<p>
	YouTube Shorts was introduced as a way for anyone to connect with a new audience using just a smartphone and the Shorts camera in the YouTube app. This was a clear move to compete with the growing popularity of TikTok, a platform dominated by short, engaging videos.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One issue Google faces is the challenge of maintaining content quality on Shorts. Unlike YouTube's traditional long-form content, Shorts are designed to be quickly consumed, making it harder for creators to produce high-quality, informative content in just a few seconds. This raises concerns about the overall content quality of the platform.
</p>

		<em>Content creators' common problem with YouTube Shorts is its inability to provide enough financial income</em>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<h3>
	Monetization struggles
</h3>

<p>
	For content creators, monetization is a crucial aspect of their work. Despite YouTube Shorts' popularity among users, they often yield lower earnings for creators compared to longer videos, and this is due to several key factors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div id="td-incontent-1443347505565">
	<script class="rvloader">!function(){var t="td-incontent-"+Math.floor(Math.random()*Date.now()),e=document.getElementsByClassName("rvloader"),n=e[e.length-1].parentNode;undefined==n.getAttribute("id")&&(n.setAttribute("id",t),revamp.displaySlots([t]))}();</script>
</div>

<p>
	Firstly, <strong>ad revenue</strong> plays a significant role in a creator's earnings on YouTube. The platform generates revenue through advertisements displayed on videos. However, short videos generally feature fewer ads, and these ads tend to be shorter themselves. This leads to a reduction in ad revenue for creators since there are fewer opportunities for advertisements to be displayed during a short video.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Secondly, YouTube's algorithm is designed to <strong>reward creators who produce longer videos</strong> that can hold viewers' attention for extended periods. Longer watch times result in higher engagement rates, and this, in turn, translates to better earnings for creators. In contrast, short videos often have lower engagement rates, as they are intended for quick viewing. This reduced engagement can negatively impact a creator's earnings, as YouTube's algorithm tends to favor longer, engaging content.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Additionally, the popularity of YouTube Shorts has led to increased <strong>competition </strong>among creators for ad revenue. With many content producers vying for the same audience, there's a surplus of short videos available on the platform. This high competition can lead to advertisers paying less for ads on short videos compared to longer ones, where the competition for ad space is less intense.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As Shorts' popularity grows, Google faces challenges related to <strong>copyright infringement</strong> and <strong>moderation</strong>. Short videos are more challenging to moderate, making it easier for inappropriate or copyrighted content to slip through the cracks, potentially harming both users and creators.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Now you: </strong>What do you think about YouTube Shorts?

	Concerns of Redditor safety, jeopardized research amid new mods and API rules.

		Did you know that improper food canning can lead to death? Botulism—the result of bacteria growing inside improperly treated canned goods—is rare, but people can <a href="https://patch.com/washington/across-wa/washington-man-likely-dies-botulism-proper-canning-practices-urged" rel="external nofollow">die</a> from it. In any case, they'll certainly get <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON8FEyVHE30" rel="external nofollow">very ill</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The dangers of food canning were explained to me clearly, succinctly, and with cited sources by Brad Barclay and someone going by Dromio05 on Reddit (who asked to withhold their real name for privacy reasons). Both were recently moderators on the r/canning subreddit and hold science-related master's degrees.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Yet Reddit removed both moderators from their positions this summer because the mods refused to end r/canning's protest against Reddit and its new API fees; the protest had made the entire subreddit "read only." Now, the ousted mods fear that r/canning could become subject to unsafe advice that goes unnoticed by new moderators. "My biggest fear with all this is that someone will follow an unsafe recipe posted on the sub and get badly sick or killed by it," Dromio05 told me.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit's infamous API changes have ushered in a new era for the site, and there are still questions about what this next chapter will look like. Ars Technica spoke with several former mods that Reddit booted—and one who was recently appointed by Reddit—about concerns that relying on replacement mods with limited subject matter expertise could result in the spread of dangerous misinformation.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Questions about replacement mods’ expertise
	</h2>

	<p>
		When Reddit announced it would abruptly start charging <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/05/reddits-api-pricing-results-in-shocking-20-million-a-year-bill-for-apollo/" rel="external nofollow">significant fees</a> for access to its API, many third-party <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/reddit-api-changes-are-imminent-heres-whats-happening-to-your-favorite-apps/" rel="external nofollow">Reddit apps announced they would close</a> (and many have). Some Reddit users, including mods, also quit Reddit. In addition, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/reddit-mods-allowed-porn-as-protest-the-company-nuked-their-mod-badges/" rel="external nofollow">Reddit revoked the mod badges</a> from long-time moderators and subsequently <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/reddit-calls-for-a-few-new-mods-after-axing-polarizing-some-of-its-best/" rel="external nofollow">sought replacements</a>, though some expelled mods worry that the replacements weren't carefully selected or trained.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Barclay told me he moderated r/canning for three years before Reddit nuked his badge. He noted various canning misconceptions, from thinking the contents of a concave lid are safe to eat to believing you don't need to apply heat to food in jars.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		He claimed that some new r/canning moderators appointed by Reddit had previously shown a lack of canning expertise before getting the new volunteer gig. For example, Barclay pointed to one mod recommending "citizen science," <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Canning/comments/158n0mo/new_moderators_needed_comment_on_this_post_to/" rel="external nofollow">saying</a> they would use a temperature data logger to "begin conducting experiments to determine what new canning products are safe." Reddit later made that user an r/canning mod.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Dromio05 showed me several posts he deemed questionable since Reddit took away his own mod badge. For example, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Canning/comments/15vggh7/eater_article_about_rebel_canning/" rel="external nofollow">this post</a> shares a link to an article about "rebel canners," which Dromio05 argues "gives a public platform to people who openly encourage methods and recipes that are known to be unsafe, like canning milk and open kettle canning." The post is labeled unsafe, but Dromio05 would have removed the link to the article.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Another cited example is <a href="https://reddit.com/r/Canning/comments/15rqggb/pressure_canning_indian_masala_sauce/" rel="external nofollow">this recipe</a> for canned sauce. It includes already-canned tomatoes, which experts like the National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP) recommend <a href="https://nchfp.uga.edu/questions/FAQ_canning.html#32" rel="external nofollow">against</a>, as there's no safe tested process for this. The recipe also includes nuts, though the USDA doesn't have any recommendations for canning nuts, and NCHFP and other experts <a href="https://preservingfoodathome.com/2013/01/02/where-did-the-nut-meats-go/" rel="external nofollow">advise</a> against canning any nuts besides green peanuts.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The new mod team for r/canning declined to comment on this story.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		There are many schools of thought around any broad topic such as canning, of course, and the former canning mods I spoke with had slightly different standards for whether or not a post could be considered safe enough for the subreddit. What's critical for Reddit's content quality is not that moderators adopt identical philosophies but that they are equipped to facilitate healthy and safe discussions and debates that benefit the community.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Newly implemented replacement mods represent a fraction of the over 50,000 moderators Reddit says it has. But the hastiness with which these specific replacement mods were ushered in, and the disposal of respected, long-time moderators, raises questions about whether Reddit prioritized reopening subreddits to get things back to normal instead of finding the best people for the volunteer jobs.
	</p>
</div>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<h2>
		Reddit mods are “rarely experts”
	</h2>

	<p>
		Reddit also recently axed r/homeautomation moderators, including Dan (full name withheld because of privacy concerns), who told me that he moderated the subreddit for about seven years. He claims his credentials include networking experience from decades in IT, plus his "extensive smart home" and instruction from a "master electrician." Like the replaced r/canning mods, Dan fears dangerous misinformation taking hold at r/homeautomation, especially when it comes to electricity.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		I reached out to r/homeautomation's new moderators, and one responded, requesting anonymity. The mod said their credentials include heavy interest in home automation, "specifically Home Assistant," for the past two years, and frequent home automation conversations outside of Reddit, including with friends in related fields, like electronics, A/V equipment, HVAC systems, and cybersecurity.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The moderator contended that subject matter expertise isn't critical for proper moderation, saying:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		<em>A moderator on Reddit is probably rarely an expert on the topic they're moderating over. Instead, they're a passionate member of the community that sees the value in sharing information between community members, and we'll all work together to make sure someone doesn't touch a live wire.</em>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In home automation specifically, it's unlikely you'll find a mod who's both a certified electrician and a cybersecurity expert, the new r/homeautomation mod noted.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Dan, via email, said, "I would argue that while a mod doesn't need to be a subject matter expert, they should at least have above-average knowledge/experience with the topic they are moderating."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In response to concerns that the new r/homeautomation mod team could overlook posts with dangerous misinformation, the anonymous Redditor pointed me to the subreddit's sidebar, which has a disclaimer about the dangers of electricity. However, the disclaimer is only visible on <a href="https://old.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/" rel="external nofollow">old Reddit</a>. The mod doesn't know why.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The anonymous home automation mod added that "there's been no change in terms of the safety of the information on r/homeautomation."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"As before, we promptly deal with submissions and comments that are inappropriate, including ones that spread false and potentially dangerous information. We lean on tools such as AutoModerator to [flush] out malicious links and spam," the mod said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		When asked for comment, Reddit's director of corporate, policy, and safety communications, Gina Antonini, said via email:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		<em>Our platform-wide <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1693396497011000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1_zCR47NsZU6mYZlsM3OTw" href="https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Content Policy</a> prohibits many kinds of <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043513151&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1693396497011000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1GznjbvHVO-7k7NijnQdEp" href="https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043513151" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">harmful content</a> and other forms of manipulated content. In addition, Reddit’s unique approach to moderation means users and moderators are empowered to set and enforce the rules of their own communities, which can be even stricter than our Content Policy. Users are also empowered to “upvote” and “downvote” content, which affects how visible a piece of content becomes. We find that our deeply engaged users are quick to challenge and downvote harmful or misleading content across the platform.</em>
	</p>

	<h2>
		Questionable vetting process
	</h2>

	<p>
		One of the top complaints I've heard about the Great Reddit Mod Purge is the company's alleged disregard for replaced mods' expertise. The swift, contentious nature of the mod replacements meant that old mods often didn't share advice with new mods. Meanwhile, the users Reddit chose to replace protesting mods may not have been properly vetted.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		That includes one of the new mods of the 3D-printing-focused subreddit r/ender3, who requested to only be referred to as the subreddit's top moderator. This person replied to a post by the Reddit employee going by u/ModCodeofConduct and requested to mod the subreddit as a "joke," they said. The user got the job despite telling me:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		<em>I have never touched a 3D printer in my life, and there is zero activity on my Reddit account related to 3D printing.</em>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The mod said, though, that most of the other mods are "serious 3D printer people" and are good at moderating, even though the mod team isn't yet "cohesive."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		For what it's worth, that mod will step down eventually, "as the joke is starting to wear off." But the story suggests that new mods weren't selected with the utmost care.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		So who did that "joke" mod replace? Among r/ender3's Reddit-sacked mods was a user going by the name Deskparser (real name withheld for privacy). Deskparser modded r/ender3 for about four years, the user told me, including ensuring the validity of advice around fire hazards and fire management.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Deskparser's work also involved moderating content around 3D-printing guns, following a rule that permitted non-functional "display and cosplay pieces," Deskparser said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Enforcing that rule required attention every week, often several times a week, due to users not really knowing what a truly 'functional' firearm print looked like, which we did get quite a few of," Deskparser explained.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		That doesn't seem like the type of thing the subreddit's new joke moderator can spot or even something that Reddit considered when appointing r/ender3's new mod team.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit declined to provide a detailed explanation of how it selected this recent group of moderators to replace protesting ones. The company has a typical <a href="https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205192505-How-do-I-become-a-moderator-" rel="external nofollow">process</a> for selecting mods and doesn't seem to have strayed from that with this recent batch of replacement mods.
	</p>
</div>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<h2>
		Lost knowledge
	</h2>

	<p>
		None of the forcibly removed mods I spoke with have worked with or plan to work with replacement mods to pass on knowledge gained through years of experience.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Sarah Gilbert is a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University and research director of Cornell's <a href="https://citizensandtech.org/" rel="external nofollow">Citizens and Technology Lab</a>; she studies content moderation, online communities, and research ethics. She's also a moderator for r/askhistorians, a subreddit known for complex modding systems (r/askhistorians is not one of the subreddits with moderators removed by Reddit).
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"When you remove entire mod teams, that institutional knowledge is just gone in a flash," Gilbert said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		She added that while knowledge can be rebuilt, it won't be the same, and mod teams recently appointed by Reddit face challenges that most new mods wouldn't.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Dan, whom Reddit relieved of his r/homeautomation mod duties, said, "The sub(s) will carry on, but with lost knowledge, experience, and, above all, love."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In addition to lost knowledge, new and old mods are also dealing with the loss of third-party apps considered helpful for moderating. Like many former and current moderators I've spoken with, Stevie Chancellor, an assistant professor in computer science and engineering at the University of Minnesota who uses big data for research on how people discuss mental health on social media, is concerned that Reddit's API rule changes have left moderators with fewer tools to do their jobs, which can result in overlooked content.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"For mental health, this is really important because people can say hurtful things ... (like calling someone a coward when they have depression) or recommending dangerous or unsafe advice on how to treat or cure their mental illness," she said. "In very rare but extreme cases, some people go to mental health support forums to provoke people to hurt themselves for their own perverted desires. Mod tools make dealing with this content faster and easier, and not having robust mod tooling damages mods' ability to combat these harmful behaviors."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit has shared plans to update its mod tools to include <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/14he7nz/accessibility_updates_to_mod_tools_part_1/" rel="external nofollow">accessibility-focused updates</a> and new <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/15rxkbn/announcing_a_new_desktop_moderator_experience_and/" rel="external nofollow">desktop tools</a>, such as building macros and updating the Mod Queue interface so more items are visible simultaneously. But many long-time moderators remain discontent, and some of the updates haven't materialized yet. Most recently, though, Reddit <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/1608391/updates_to_how_well_be_supporting_our_moderators/" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> the Mod Helper Program reward system to encourage moderators to share advice with each other. It's a step toward showing mods a smidge more appreciation and encouraging expertise sharing. Of course, it's unlikely that ousted mods will participate.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Reddit-based research jeopardized
	</h2>

	<p>
		As some question the safety of information shared on Reddit following the forced and voluntary exits of longtime mods, others worry about access to Reddit data for research on important topics related to physical safety.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		A 2021 study (<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/20563051211019004" rel="external nofollow">PDF</a>) entitled "Studying Reddit: A Systematic Overview of Disciplines, Approaches, Methods, and Ethics" helps illustrate how Reddit can be a valuable resource for scientific studies on medical sciences, drug abuse and alcoholism, public health and safety, and women's health, as well as for studies in the social sciences, like psychology, criminology, and law enforcement. The study notes that, like Twitter, Reddit was starting to become a "model organism" for academic study, due to Reddit's open API fostering easy data collection and Reddit users responding to current world events.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Reddit’s subreddit structure means that finding relevant research data can be easier than on Twitter, and in contrast to the character limits of Twitter, Reddit offers researchers a qualitative and quantitatively more expansive dataset," it explains, pointing to mental health, depression, and eating disorders as some of the most common topics for Reddit-based research.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Researchers Ars spoke with for this story feel that Reddit's new rules for how researchers and academics can get free or discounted access to Reddit's API are vague. They say that despite the existence of a <a href="https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=14868593862164" rel="external nofollow">form</a> for researchers to request API access, actually getting access is harder than it was before.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit declined to say how many research-related API pricing exemptions it has granted since it started charging for API access.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Gilbert said:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		<em>Requiring a form is itself problematic because it introduces a system where the platform is gatekeeping what research can be conducted and what research cannot, and currently there's no transparency about Reddit's decision-making process. Who can access it, for example? While they might automatically allow anyone associated with a higher education institution access, what about other groups doing important research, such as data journalists and civil society groups? ...</em>
	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		<em>Some gatekeeping isn't a bad thing—we found examples of studies that I think most people would be uncomfortable with and many would even consider unethical. However, having Reddit—or any big tech platform—in that role creates conflicts of interest that could limit science (including science with goals to prevent or address various kinds of harm).</em>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit's policy <a href="https://www.redditinc.com/policies/data-api-terms" rel="external nofollow">says</a> that those who want to use the API for "research in excess of rate limits" need a separate agreement with Reddit. Reddit says its API <a href="https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/14945211791892#h_01H69EJ3EFY7G7HNV17ASH24KS" rel="external nofollow">may be used for</a> research, "provided you use it exclusively for academic (i.e. non-commercial) purposes, don’t redistribute our data or any derivative products based on our data (e.g. models trained using Reddit data), credit Reddit, and anonymize information in published results."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit says it doesn't charge researchers "in most cases" and decides if it will charge researchers on a "case-by-case basis." An example Reddit provides for when it might ask for money is when there's a lot of data involved.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Chancellor's research includes the use of big data sets from Reddit to understand how people talk about severe mental illness and related behaviors, like suicidal thoughts and self-injury.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		She said:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
		<em>Barriers to API access and slower data crawls means that our studies can't run. That means we can't do research on understanding what's going on on Reddit, let alone what kinds of positive interventions could be developed to help people who are looking for social support and help.</em>
	</p>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<h2>
		Pushshift
	</h2>

	<p>
		The nonprofit <a href="https://networkcontagion.us/" rel="external nofollow">Network Contagion Research Institute's</a> Pushshift <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/pushshift/comments/bcxguf/new_to_pushshift_read_this_faq/" rel="external nofollow">service</a> archives all Reddit posts, making it popular among moderators and researchers. Chancellor and her team, for example, have relied on Pushshift for data collection related to studies on opioid addiction and recovery, suicidal crisis conversations, and eating disorder behaviors. While Reddit moderators can gain Pushshift access by requesting a single-use token, researchers haven't been able to access it since Reddit's API rule changes took effect.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		A July <a href="https://independenttechresearch.org/reddit-survey-results/" rel="external nofollow">survey</a> of 118 participants, including some health researchers, authored by Gilbert and others, highlighted the detriment to research projects this can have. (Note: Gilbert told me the survey was originally <a href="https://independenttechresearch.org/reddit-data-access-letter/" rel="external nofollow">taken</a> to help negotiate with Reddit around API changes rather than for distributing a proper survey. Because of that and due to a lack of consent, there aren't many publicly available details about the survey's participants.)
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Data archives like Pushshift provided needed functionality that the API does not provide, for example, historical Reddit data that could be queried by timeframe," the report says.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		A survey respondent is quoted as saying that without Pushshift, they couldn't practically gather the necessary volume of data required for their research, which focuses on people with addictions who aren't in a formal recovery program.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Qualitative research in this area is overwhelmingly retrospective, with much of the existing qualitative enquiry undertaken many years after individuals initiated recovery," the participant said. "Drawing data [via Pushshift] would have enabled insight into these early stages with no additional risks to participants’ recovery processes. Without that access, the entire purpose of this research and any benefits it could have provided will disappear."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Other topics of research reportedly hindered by researchers losing access to Pushshift include racism, radicalization, gender, and empathy, the July survey found.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit declined to comment on Pushshift access for researchers. But the Network Contagion Research Institute has <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/pushshift/comments/13w6j20/advancing_communityled_moderation_an_update_on/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web2x&amp;context=3" rel="external nofollow">said</a> it's interested in working with Reddit more to find a way to make Pushshift accessible to researchers.
	</p>

	<h2>
		New Reddit, new normal
	</h2>

	<p>
		This is just a snapshot of a tumultuous period in Reddit's history, and there are many subreddits whose mod team wasn't altered by Reddit. While the company has its work cut out for it in ensuring quality content and moderators, it's too early to make a broad statement about whether Reddit's content quality has suffered since its API changes and the loss of some mods and power users.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		I don't doubt that there are replacement moderators who have good intentions and strong expertise in the subreddit topic they're moderating. Even the Redditor who ended up with r/ender3 as a joke told me they want to help rebuild the subreddit's mod team so that appropriate mods are on top.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But amid the urgency to bring Reddit "back to normal," Reddit may have appointed some users to moderate communities about topics they're not experts in. Some argue that expertise isn't critical to good moderation, and it will be interesting to see over the coming months if that's true. Replacement mods could certainly learn about their subreddit topics or even seek the counsel of other mods who are more well-credentialed. But the potential for Reddit to see an increase in misinformation remains. And as with any social media platform or forum, advice on topics with important nuances should be taken with a grain of salt and further researched before being acted upon.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In any case, Reddit's approach to replacement mod appointments has further damaged <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/the-reddit-protests-are-winding-down-so-whats-next/" rel="external nofollow">community trust in Reddit</a> and confidence in the company prioritizing the user experience. Adding to that concern are new obstacles for researchers hoping to tap Reddit as a data source. It's debatable if Reddit should be obliged to provide free API and Pushshift access to research from which it doesn't directly benefit. But providing more transparency on research-related API fee exemptions would go a long way toward showing compassion for researchers' work, which could be valuable for the world beyond Reddit.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Reddit has a reputation for providing unique content that you can't find elsewhere, from real human advice to insight on how humans behave. It's now up to the company, refreshed mod team, and remaining users to ensure New Reddit continues earning that mark.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Advance Publications, which owns Ars Technica parent Condé Nast, is the largest shareholder in Reddit.
	</p>

	<a id="windows" name="windows" rel=""></a>Windows 11, Windows 10, Edge, and other news
</h3>

<p>
	Here we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And of course, you may find a word or two about older but still supported versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Let us start this week's Microsoft Weekly with Windows 10, the previous-gen operating system overshadowed by Windows 11's new features and controversies. As it turned out, Microsoft is not over with adding new features to Windows 10 (despite saying it would not do so). Users discovered that the latest non-security update paired with recent OneDrive preview updates <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10s-file-explorer-gets-a-surprise-update/" rel="external nofollow">introduces a new button on the File Explorer's ribbon</a>. When opening Documents, Pictures, Videos, or Music, Windows 10 allows users to back up important files in OneDrive with a single click.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has yet to announce the change, but those willing to try it right now can check out <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10s-file-explorer-gets-a-surprise-update/" rel="external nofollow">our article</a> detailing how to get it working. It is worth noting that the lack of new features is not a problem for most Windows users. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/statcounter-windows-11s-market-share-decreased-in-august-2023/" rel="external nofollow">According to the latest Statcounter report</a>, almost 72% of Windows PCs still run Windows 10.
</p>

	<img alt="1693217340_start_backup.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="46.81" height="190" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/08/1693217340_start_backup.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of OneDrive, another thing that slipped under the radar is changes in Microsoft's cloud storage plans for business customers. Microsoft previously offered two storage plans: Plan 1 with up to 1TB ($5/mo per user) and Plan 2 with unlimited storage ($10/mo per user if the business qualified). <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-has-removed-unlimited-storage-options-for-its-onedrive-business-plans/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft ditched the former somewhere in mid-July, leaving only the 1TB option</a>. When asked for a comment, a Microsoft spokesperson revealed that the decision was made "in response to customer demand" and to "streamline the purchasing process."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The change marks the end of Microsoft offering unlimited OneDrive storage. In November 2015, the company <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-kills-the-onedrive-party-ends-unlimited-and-downgrades-storage-options/" rel="external nofollow">ditched the perk for regular customers</a>, citing "customer abuse" and blaming irresponsible Office 365 subscribers for uploading terabytes worth of data PC backups to OneDrive. In a nutshell, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-onedrive-changes-are-a-senseless-overreaction-to-a-problem-it-created/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft was solving the problem it created</a>.
</p>

<p class="skipParagraphing">
	<img alt="1648728320_onedrive_logo.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="427" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2022/03/1648728320_onedrive_logo.jpg">
</p>

<p>
	After a round of less-than-exciting news, Edge users finally got what they have been asking Microsoft for quite a while. Alongside the Microsoft Edge 117 Beta release, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-deprecates-some-edge-features-to-improve-and-simplify-its-browser/" rel="external nofollow">the company announced the deprecation of several features in its browser</a>. To improve the experience and simplify its browser, Microsoft is deprecating Kids Mode, Math Solver, and a few more niche features. As for more useful features, the company has quietly added <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-snuck-in-a-copy-video-frame-feature-in-the-latest-edge-116-stable-update/" rel="external nofollow">a neat capability</a> that lets you copy the current frame from a video.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Until recently, Microsoft has been trying to keep Microsoft Edge users from switching to other browsers by limiting access to some of its services from Chrome, Firefox, etc. However, Microsoft is now willing to lower its walls and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/bing-chat-has-launched-for-all-chrome-desktop-users-bing-chat-enterprise-is-on-edge-mobile/" rel="external nofollow">let Chrome users access Bing Chat</a>. In addition, the company launched Bing Chat on Edge Mobile.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of Bing Chat, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/bing-chat-enterprise-is-being-added-to-windows-copilot-for-windows-beta-and-dev-insiders/" rel="external nofollow">Windows insiders in the Dev and Canary Channel now have access to Bing Chat Enterprise</a> via the recently announced Windows Copilot feature. Bing Chat Enterprise works like its regular consumer-oriented counterpart with extra security measures to protect personal and corporate data.
</p>

<p class="skipParagraphing">
	<img alt="1693242296_wincopilotbce1b.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="450" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/08/1693242296_wincopilotbce1b.jpg">
</p>

<p>
	Also, the service received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-bing-chat-adds-better-responses-for-map-directions-bing-gets-live-traffic-updates/" rel="external nofollow">better responses for map directions and live traffic updates</a>. Bing Chat now can show visual directions and routers, making navigation easier and more convenient. And perhaps, in the future, you will be able to wear a backpack powered by Bing Chat—<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-wants-to-put-a-bag-with-an-ai-powered-digital-assistant-on-your-back/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft has filed a patent application for a smart backpack with artificial intelligence</a>. </p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-to-force-push-23h222h2-update-as-windows-11-21h2-end-of-support-date-nears/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft has also issued a notification</a>, warning Windows 11 21H2 users about the upcoming end of support. The initial Windows 11 release will reach its end of life in October 2023, which means customers must prepare for a forced upgrade to version 22H2 or 23H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Every Windows 11 version has a two-year lifecycle, and the upcoming end of support for version 21H2 means the operating system will soon turn two. Still, despite being available for quite a while, Windows 11 is not breaking any record in terms of user adoption. Statcounter's <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/statcounter-windows-11s-market-share-decreased-in-august-2023/" rel="external nofollow">latest report claims the OS has only 23% of the global market</a>. Things are more positive on the gaming side—<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/valve-windows-11-makes-a-big-jump-on-steam-reaches-almost-40/" rel="external nofollow">Valve says almost 40% of all Steam users now run Windows 11</a>.

	The updated Windows Insider builds also bring <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-updates-windows-11-snipping-tool-and-notepad-apps-for-canary-and-dev-insiders/" rel="external nofollow">notable improvements for two stock apps: Snipping Tool and Notepad</a>. Windows 11's built-in screenshot utility now features an improved capture bar, allowing you to switch between screenshots and screen recording without opening the app. Also, you can record your screen with your voice and mute the microphone when recording. As for Notepad, it now automatically saves your sessions, so you can close it with no extra prompts.

<p>
	The original Surface Duo has the honor of opening this section with what is probably its final firmware update. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/surface-duo-and-duo-2-get-august-2023-firmware-update/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft has released the August 2023 update</a> for the first and second-gen Surface Duo, bringing uninspiring Android security patches to those still rocking these dual-screen smartphones. <p>
	Skype for Business in Teams Rooms is another thing Microsoft will soon discontinue. The company has published a blog post detailing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-to-end-support-for-connecting-skype-for-business-servers-in-teams-rooms/" rel="external nofollow">the upcoming end of support for Skype for Business connections in Teams Rooms</a>.

<p>
	A new report emerged this week detailing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-new-report-claims-microsoft-has-not-fixed-a-skype-flaw-that-could-reveal-your-ip-address/" rel="external nofollow">a nasty security vulnerability in Skype for mobile devices</a>. As it turned out, it is "trivially easy" to modify a link to obtain the receiver's IP address without them even clicking that link. Besides, there is no need to use some shady website or meticulously crafter malware website—a slightly modified link to Google or any other harmless website is enough to figure out the needed data. Microsoft is already aware of the problem and plans to address it in a future update.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now let's talk about a few things from the Microsoft world going six feet under. For starters, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-kills-visual-studio-for-mac/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft has announced the retirement of Visual Studio for Mac</a>. The company said it would continue issuing security updates for the latest release for one more year, after which the IDE will become legacy software available only to Visual Studio subscribers. Microsoft recommends users move to VS Code or opt for Windows-based virtual machines (local or in the cloud).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Also, in a somewhat surprising move, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-kills-wordpad-will-remove-the-app-from-windows-in-future-updates/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft said it would soon remove WordPad</a>, a thirty-year-old piece of software, from its operating system. This rich text editor is now deprecated, meaning users should not expect any meaningful updates or new features. And while it is still available, those using WordPad better start looking for free or premium alternatives. To commemorate WordPad, one of Windows' forgotten apps, John Callaham published <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-quick-look-back-at-wordpad-the-free-word-processor-that-microsoft-just-killed/" rel="external nofollow">a look-back article detailing the story of this text editor</a>.

</p>

<p>
	Finally, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reminds-youll-no-longer-have-tls-10-11-in-windows-12-and-the-next-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft has issued a reminder about the deprecation of Transport Layer Security Protocol 1.0 and 1.1</a>. <p>
	Speaking of 100GB+ games, <em>Starfield</em>, Bethesda Softworks' long-anticipated RPG, is launching next week (it is already available if you have purchased the most expensive edition). On September 5, 2023, the game will arrive on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass. Many gamers want to check out the game without investing too much money or <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/warez-group-rune-leaks-full-starfield-pc-release-on-torrent-sites-clocking-at-116gb/" rel="external nofollow">raising the black flag</a> (which is already possible). Therefore, many look for Xbox and PC Game Pass, Microsoft's gaming subscription that lets you get 14-day access for only $1 (Starfield will be available there on day 1). Sadly, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-xbox-game-pass-has-killed-its-1-14-day-trial-again-ahead-of-starfield-launch/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft decided to pull a sneaky on gamers and removed the $1 trial without warning</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	From now on, the only option to taste <em>Starfield </em>without spending $69.99 is to subscribe to PC Game Pass for $9.99/mo or Xbox Game Pass for $10.99 (there is also Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $16.99).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With the <em>Starfield</em> release upon us, Bethesda fans are starting to look forward to another long-anticipated title, <em>The Elders Scrolls VI</em>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/bethesda-gives-us-a-glimpse-at-elder-scrolls-6/" rel="external nofollow">announced five years ago at E3 2018 alongside the ill-fated <em>Fallout 76</em></a>. One of Bethesda's executives <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/bethesda-exec-confirms-elder-scrolls-vi-in-full-development-ahead-of-starfield-launch/" rel="external nofollow">reassured gamers</a> that the studio is working on <em>The Elders Scroll VI</em>. Still, you should not expect to hear from it any time soon—despite having a team working on <em>TES VI</em>, the studio's primary focus is <em>Starfield</em>, and it will remain so for a while.

	Paradox and Colossal Order are gearing up to launch <em>Cities: Skylines 2</em> on October 24, 2023 (it will also be available on PC and Xbox Game Pass on day 1). In the latest development entry, developers <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/chirper-social-media-returns-in-cities-skylines-2-as-citizens-get-more-complex-lives/" rel="external nofollow">revealed details about the people living in players' cities and various aspects affecting their happiness</a>, activities, life choices, and more. Besides, Cities: Skyline's most popular social media, Chiprer, is returning, letting you see how people react to your city-building strategies and informing you about the need to make a specific adjustment.

	<a id="past" name="past" rel=""></a>A blast from Microsoft's past
</h3>

<p>
	John Callaham's weekly "Look back" series provides throwbacks into the past, detailing the company's products, partnerships, mishaps, and successes from years ago.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On August 24, 2001, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 6.0. The sixth version of the infamous and once most popular browser was highly controversial. On its 22nd anniversary, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-quick-look-back-at-microsoft-internet-explorer-60-launched-22-years-ago-this-week/" rel="external nofollow">John Callaham remembered the good-old IE6 and security issues plaguing the browser for five years before its successor</a>. The security security problems were so severe that the US government had to issue an advisory asking PC users not to use the browser without "protection" (<em>sorry for the innuendo</em>).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the modern world, where each mainstream browser gets a "major" update every four weeks, reading about a browser not getting big updates for five years feels slightly surreal.

<p>
	Another look-back article from John covers <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-quick-look-back-at-microsofts-xna-game-studio-that-launched-17-years-ago-today/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's XNA Game Studio launched 17 years ago</a>, on August 30, 2006. <p>
	Did you know that security issues were not IE6's only problem? The browser had poor compatibility with web standards, particularly CSS, forcing web developers (including Neowin) to spend a lot of resources on implementing various workarounds and hacks to ensure their websites displayed properly. Although there was nothing good in Internet Explorer 6's bad compatibility and security, its flaws ultimately paved the way for proper standardization across the web, platforms, and browsers.

	On Thursday evening, gamers who purchased the <a href="https://amzn.to/44H3vzz" rel="external nofollow">$100 Premium Edition</a> or the <a href="https://amzn.to/3OTKRyA" rel="external nofollow">$300 Constellation Edition</a> of Starfield were able to start playing the sci-fi space-based RPG in early access. That included the PC version of the Premium Edition that was available on Valve's Steam service.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Because the game hasn't been "officially" released, Starfield is not showing up <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed" rel="external nofollow">on Steam's most-played list</a>. However,<a href="https://steamdb.info/app/1716740/charts/" rel="external nofollow"> the independent SteamDB site</a> was able to get the data from Steam's services, and it shows that Starfield has had as many as 234,502 players online at once for its first two days.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At the time of this writing, Starfield is the <a href="https://steamdb.info/charts/" rel="external nofollow">fifth most played game on Steam at the moment</a>, again according to SteamDB. We expect that those concurrent player numbers to jump much higher on the evening of September 5, which is went players of the Standard $70 version of Starfield can begin playing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The game is also at the <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/topselling/US" rel="external nofollow">top of Steam's sales charts at the moment</a> and has been in the top 100 list in terms of sales for the past 12 weeks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While it was expected that Starfield would get a big launch on Steam, the key is whether or not it will keep a large number of players online sometime after September 5. Bethesda will likely be happy if the game retains the number of players that another single-player RPG has done recently.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We are of course talking about Baldur's Gate 3, which launched a month ago and had over 800,000 concurrent players at its peak on Steam. Right now, the game continues to be popular on Valve's service. It is<a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/topselling/global" rel="external nofollow"> not only the third best-selling game on Steam</a> (behind Starfield and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive), but it is also the <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed" rel="external nofollow">third most-played game on Steam right now</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While it has lost a lot of its concurrent player base since the launch, there are still well over 480,000 Baldur's Gate 3 Steam players online at once. That would certainly be a good position for Starfield to be in a month after its launch.

	AMD <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-will-be-starfields-official-partner-on-pc-with-ryzen-and-radeon-optimizations/" rel="external nofollow">announced a partnership</a> with Bethesda Studios earlier this year, especially for the spaced-based RPG Starfield. Later, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/starfield-reportedly-will-not-support-dlss-and-xess-on-pc-due-to-amd-sponsorship/" rel="external nofollow">a leak from the game's preload files</a> shows that the PC version would not support Nvidia's DLSS or Intel's XeSS technology. Then we learned that Starfield supports just AMD's FSR, at least for launch.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, a player prepared a mod for DLSS from day one. This new mod for the Starfield enables DLSS in place of AMD's FSR, offering improved image quality for Nvidia GPU owners.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Created by modder PureDark, the 'Starfield Upscaler' mod allows players to activate DLSS in the graphics settings instead of AMD FSR. To install it, users must extract the files into their Starfield directory and add the required DLL file.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With the mod enabled, pressing End in-game brings up a menu to tweak DLSS settings. The mod essentially unlocks DLSS support that is not natively included in Starfield.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD is the exclusive partner for Starfield, which explains the default integration of their FSR 2.0 upscaler. However, if Bethesda wishes, AMD's gaming marketing head, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-says-bethesda-can-choose-to-put-in-nvidia-dlss-support-in-starfield/" rel="external nofollow">Frank Azor, has expressed openness</a> to officially adding DLSS support in a future update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, the Starfield Upscaler mod claims to provide a way for the roughly 75% of PC gamers with Nvidia cards to take advantage of their hardware's specialized AI upscaling. According to the PC Gamer, this mod works flawlessly with no blocked achievements, making it an easy upgrade for Nvidia users wanting a visual boost.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In other news, AMD announced its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-launching-fsr-3-in-september-to-work-with-xbox-as-well-but-no-mention-of-sonys-ps5/" rel="external nofollow">third version of FSR graphics tech</a> at Gamescom 2023. FSR 3 Frame Generation will reportedly give PC and console games a huge frame rate boost and will be added to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-major-forspoken-patch-is-on-the-way-for-pc-and-ps5-versions/" rel="external nofollow">Forspoken </a>and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/final-immortals-of-aveum-pc-requirements-revealed-will-include-performance-budget-tool/" rel="external nofollow">Immortals of Aveum</a> via patches in September. It is worth noting that Starfield supports the older FSR 2 for now.

	Bethesda's grand RPG <em>Starfield </em>has just launched into the hands of special edition version owners as part of their five days of early access benefit. However, one missing aspect has been a major thorn in some players' sides: having no built-in option to change the game's field of view (FOV).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We have confirmed this to be the case ourselves, with none of the settings menus (Display, Interface, Accessibility, etc.) having any mention of changing FOV across all versions of the game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Being a Bethesda title though, PC players have already taken it upon themselves to add the functionality to their games. As a Nexus mod page by creator <a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/99" rel="external nofollow">Hellstorm102</a> shows (comparison shots below), creating a fresh config file in My Documents and adding a couple of lines will allow players to set any custom FOV. Other than for those looking to have a wider view as a benefit, this can also help those who suffer from motion sickness when playing games.

	To change the field of view, follow the directions below. However, keep in mind that extremely high FOV numbers can present issues like the camera clipping into clothing or objects nearby. Moreover, considering this expands the amount of real estate the game has to show the player at all times, a performance hit is to the expected.

	<li>
		Head to Windows' Documents folder, then My Games, and locate Starfield folder inside it. If this folder is not there, you probably haven't launched the game yet for it to be created.
	</li>
	<li>
		While inside the \Documents\My Games\Starfield folder, create a new text file and name it <strong>StarfieldCustom.ini</strong>
	</li>
	<li>
		Inside this file, add the following lines of text and save:

	fTPWorldFOV=90.0000</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Change the numbers following the "=" sign to set the desired FOV. The given text above will set the FOV to 90. This should work across Steam and Microsoft Store (PC Game Pass) versions of the title.

	<em>Plenty of space for an FOV slider in the future, hopefully</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The lack of FOV sliders mostly affects PC players due to how close they are usually to the display, with many developers nowadays including the handy feature in their ports. While not as commonplace as on PC, even some console games now have FOV sliders in settings menus to accommodate players. What's interesting is that Bethesda Game Studios' previous game, <em>Fallout 76</em>, currently has an FOV slider built into its menu, which makes its absence from <em>Starfield </em>a baffling one.

	According to a New York Times report, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is considering launching paid subscription versions of its social media platforms that would not show users ads.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The ad-free options would only be available in the European Union (EU) and is likely a response to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/meta-gets-hit-with-a-13-billion-fine-by-the-eu-for-sending-personal-data-to-the-us/" rel="external nofollow">regulatory scrutiny and privacy concerns</a> in the region. Sources familiar with Meta's plans said that users who pay for Facebook and Instagram subscriptions would not see any ads within the apps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>Meta will continue to offer free versions of Facebook and Instagram with ads in the EU, it said. It is unclear how much the paid versions of the apps would cost or when the company might launch them.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The move highlights how tech companies like Meta may need to redesign products to comply with new regulations, especially in Europe. Laws like the EU's <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/gdpr-what-it-is-and-what-it-means-for-you/" rel="external nofollow">General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)</a> and the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/eus-digital-markets-act-enters-into-force-on-november-1/" rel="external nofollow">Digital Markets Act</a> limit how companies can use personal data for advertising.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Offering an ad-free paid option could help Meta address some of the regulatory concerns about its current business model, which relies on analyzing user data to target ads. However, it's uncertain how many users would actually pay for a subscription.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is worth noting that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/instagram-threads-not-coming-to-the-eu-on-thursday-says-irish-regulator/" rel="external nofollow">Threads is not yet available in the EU</a> due to the regulator's privacy concerns. Moreover, Meta took some action to prevent EU users from <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/meta-allegedly-blocks-the-use-of-threads-with-vpns-in-the-eu/" rel="external nofollow">accessing its app via VPNs in July</a>. The social media giant has not said when it plans to launch Threads in the EU, but the app may be available in the region later this year, especially with ad-free subscription.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meta earns most of its revenue from selling targeted ads. European Union accounts for around 10% of the company's ad business, making it the second most lucrative region after North America.

	$50 price cut only makes the 16GB 4060 Ti marginally more palatable than before.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Last week, AMD announced what are probably the last major GPU launches of this generation of graphics cards: <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/08/amds-radeon-rx-7700-xt-and-rx-7800-xt-fill-the-gaps-in-its-next-gen-gpu-lineup/" rel="external nofollow">the $449 Radeon RX 7700 XT and $499 Radeon RX 7800 XT</a>. AMD's pricing and performance numbers pit the cards against Nvidia's <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/05/review-nvidias-399-rtx-4060-ti-is-mostly-a-step-forward-but-only-a-small-one/" rel="external nofollow">GeForce RTX 4060 Ti</a> (specifically the <a href="https://amzn.to/3En9Dm3" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">$499</a> 16GB version) and the $599 <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/04/rtx-4070-review-an-ideal-gpu-for-anyone-who-skipped-the-graphics-card-shortage/" rel="external nofollow">RTX 4070</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		AMD's pricing is aggressive enough that Nvidia is quietly cutting the prices of <a href="https://tinyurl.com/582jhdc4" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">some 16GB RTX 4060 Ti cards</a> to $449, to match the RX 7700 XT. The announcement about the $50 reduction was buried toward the bottom of an email that Nvidia sent to GPU reviewers ahead of AMD's launch next week; it also drew attention to Nvidia-specific features like DLSS upscaling and frame generation, which compete with <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/08/amds-fps-doubling-fsr-3-is-coming-soon-and-not-just-to-radeon-graphics-cards/" rel="external nofollow">AMD's GPU-agnostic FSR</a>, plus <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/nvidia-dlss-3-5-ray-reconstruction/" rel="external nofollow">recent DLSS improvements</a> that improve ray-tracing performance.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Finally, as a reminder, market prices can vary from the original launch MSRPs," Nvidia's Brian Burke wrote. "Today, GeForce RTX 4070 is widely available at $599, and GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is now available at $449. Both of these GPUs are great upgrade choices for gamers seeking their next GPU for the upcoming 2 to 3 years."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If reviews for the 8GB version of the 4060 Ti were mostly of the damning-with-faint-praise variety, reviews of the 16GB version were pretty uniformly negative; Nvidia didn't even send out any cards for review, and <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4060-ti-16gb-review" rel="external nofollow">outlets like Tom's Hardware</a> and <a href="https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4060-ti-16-gb/40.html" rel="external nofollow">TechPowerUp</a> said that Nvidia's board partners weren't interested in sending out review loaners either. When this kind of thing happens, it is often a sign that companies do not expect reviewers to be kind.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		According to those reviews and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/05/nvidias-399-4060-ti-comes-with-no-price-hike-but-mild-performance-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">Nvidia's numbers</a>, the extra RAM only helps boost frame rates in a small handful of games since the GPU is exactly the same as in the cheaper 8GB version. And at 1440p and 4K resolutions where more RAM could conceivably be of more use, the card's relatively narrow 128-bit memory bus restricts performance—in some games running at 4K, the 4060 Ti is barely faster than the 3060 Ti from late 2020. Combine those dubious benefits with the $100 price jump, and you had a card that offered pretty bad value for the money. And that's saying something since pretty much every GPU in the RTX 40 series costs more than we would like it to.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If I were buying a new GPU for myself, I would still probably bypass both versions of the 4060 Ti entirely; the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/geforce-rtx-4060-review-not-thrilling-but-a-super-efficient-299-workhorse/" rel="external nofollow">$299 RTX 4060</a> is a capable 1080p card already, and the $599 RTX 4070 is more expensive but it does a much better job than the 4060 Ti at higher 1440p and 4K resolutions (and that's before considering any of the 6000- and 7000-series Radeon options). But we can all agree, at least, that spending $50 to get another 8GB of video memory is more palatable than spending $100.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We'll take the 16GB 4060 Ti's price tweak into consideration in our review of the Radeon RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT. The cards launch on September 6.
	</p>

	While most people agree that AMD's RX 7000 cards (RDNA 3/ Navi 3x) offer <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-kills-nvidias-4060-ti-8gb16gb-with-rx-7700-xt-rx-7800-xt-takes-on-rtx-4070/" rel="external nofollow">much better value for money</a> compared to Nvidia's RTX 40-series counterparts, one area where Team Red has once again fallen behind, after making some decent progress with RDNA 1 and RDNA 2, is in terms of power consumption.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With RDNA 2 (RX 6000), AMD went with a narrower memory bus while adding large quantities of on-board L3 cache, dubbed Infinity Cache, to compensate for the lowered memory bandwidth. Though this meant that these GPUs struggled slightly in memory-intense tasks like high-resolution gaming, Radeon actually came out on top in power efficiency, a much-needed victory in that department in a very long time. For example, the RX 6900 XT was able to outdo the RTX 3090 while the 6800 XT was more efficient than the RTX 3080. (Interestingly, it's Nvidia who has taken a very similar approach this time with a large amount of L2 cache.)
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Sadly though, AMD's new RX 7000 cards have gone back to a wider memory bus design and this, along with architectural deficiencies, means that Nvidia is once again back on top as the power efficiency king.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Interestingly though, it looks like this was a conscious decision on AMD's part to sort of ignore power draw as the company's Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Graphics Business Unit, Scott Herkelman, feels that not many gamers actually care about power consumption when it comes to desktop gaming.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a recent interview with <a href="https://www.club386.com/scott-herkelman-qa-amd-radeon-boss-answers-your-burning-rx-7800-xt-questions/" rel="external nofollow">Club386</a>, Herkelman revealed this when asked about the weaker energy efficiency of the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-kills-nvidias-4060-ti-8gb16gb-with-rx-7700-xt-rx-7800-xt-takes-on-rtx-4070/" rel="external nofollow">upcoming RX 7700 XT</a> compared to the RTX 4070:
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em><strong>Q) </strong>Energy efficiency also appears weaker than Nvidia on paper – RTX 4070, for example, has a 200W TGP, compared to 245W for RX 7700 XT. Is this an area of concern?</em>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em><strong>Scott Herkelman</strong>: We have a company initiative in driving good performance per watt across our portfolio of products. We look at perf per watt on every chart when bringing all chips to market. In notebooks, it matters greatly. In desktop, however, it matters, but not to everyone. There are some people who are really concerned about power, others don’t care as much.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, Herkelman does acknowledge the benefits of a more efficient design and states that power efficiency is a priority for the company.
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>We definitely want to make a better perf-per-watt chip. A better chip makes the overall board more affordable, which enables us to do different things with the pricing and hopefully supply additional performance to the gamer. It’s also good for the environment and your own electricity bill.</em>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>Power is definitely a prime initiative. You’ll see us over time get better and better at it. We need to catch up.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, Scott Herkelman also acknowledged the idle power consumption struggles AMD has been having with its 7000 series, adding that it may take some more time to fully resolve all such issues:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>There are still bugs that we need to fix. Idle power is one of them. We believe there is a driver fix for it. It’s a wonky one, actually. We do see some inconsistencies with idle power that shouldn’t be there, and we’re working with our partners to maybe help with that. It will be cleaned up, but it might take a bit more time.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD has been trying to fix power draw issues on these cards for a while now. The first driver with a known fix was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-fixes-high-power-draw-bug-on-windows-systems-for-new-rx-7900-xtx-with-driver-22122/" rel="external nofollow">released last year in December</a>. In the meantime, the Radeon division has been trying to fix idle power draw as well but with limited success, as these fixes have been delivered <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-2381-driver-has-high-idle-power-draw-fixes-again-and-immortals-of-aveum-support/" rel="external nofollow">in bits and pieces</a> mostly.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/1086940/Baldurs_Gate_3/" rel="external nofollow">change notes for the patch on Steam</a>, Larian notes that there's some small additional story content in this update. That includes a new epilogue scene for the character of Karlach, and more small moments featuring that same character have been added to the game's first and second acts. Larian says it is working on adding new epilogues for other members of the game's cast of characters.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There are also a number of performance improvements in the second patch, and the storage sizes of the game's save files have been reduced. There's also a new feature specifically for co-op players:

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

Therefore, he has come up with a solution. Introducing Withers’ Wardrobe of Wayward Friends! With this woodworked wonder, you can now dismiss co-op party members and bring your companions back into the fold. Withers’ solution only extends to custom Tavs, however - so no throwing Gale into a cupboard (although we’re sure it’s comfy in there).</em>

<p>
	There have also been a number of UI changes in this build, and of course, there are some bug fixes as well.

<p>
	This update for the PC version comes just a few days before Baldur's Gate 3 is due to be released for the PS5 console. The game is also coming to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/larian-confirms-baldurs-gate-3-hits-xbox-this-year-but-without-split-screen-on-series-s/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S consoles later in 2023</a>, but the game's co-op split-screen support won't be included for Xbox Series S players. It's possible that support could be added <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/baldurs-gate-3-may-add-split-screen-co-op-to-xbox-series-s-consoles-in-a-post-launch-update/" rel="external nofollow">sometime after the Xbox version's launch</a>.

	With companies riding the wave of AI, more data center PCs will be required. Those data centers will also need more memory to be packed into their systems alongside powerful GPUs <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-generative-ai-boom-caused-nvidia-to-double-its-revenues-to-1351-billion-for-q2-2023/" rel="external nofollow">like those provided by NVIDIA</a>. Today, Samsung Electronics announced it has developed the world's first 32-gigabit (Gb) DDR5 DRAM with the use of a 12 nanometer (nm) manufacturing process.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-electronics-unveils-industrys-first-and-highest-capacity-12nm-class-32gb-ddr5-dram-ideal-for-the-ai-era?utm_source=feedly&amp;utm_medium=direct" rel="external nofollow">Samsung's press release</a> stated this new process doubles the amount of memory in the same package as the current 16Gb modules, which the company started mass-producing back in May 2023. The company added:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>Previously, DDR5 128GB DRAM modules manufactured using 16Gb DRAM required the Through Silicon Via (TSV) process. However, by using Samsung’s 32Gb DRAM, the 128GB module can now be produced without using the TSV process, while reducing power consumption by approximately 10% compared to 128GB modules with 16Gb DRAM. This technological breakthrough makes the product the optimal solution for enterprises that emphasize power efficiency, such as data centers.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Samsung added that this new development will lead the way for the creation of DRAM modules that will be as high as 1TB sometime in the future. The company plans to provide the new 32Gb DRAM products to data centers, along with other companies that "require applications like AI and next-generation computing."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mass production of the new 32Gb DDR5 DRAM is scheduled to begin sometime before the end of 2023. Samsung did not reveal a price point for these new products.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company also noted that it made its first DRAM memory product in 1983. At that time it was a 64-kilobit (Kb) DRAM module that was on the cutting edge of computing. Samsung points out that in 2023, with the launch of its 32Gb DDR5 DRAM product, it has increased its memory capacity "by a factor of 500,000 over the last 40 years."

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		There's a quote from Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. “Space is big,” he writes. “You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space.”
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<a href="https://amzn.to/45PpoxU" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Starfield </a>may as well put this quote on the cover page of its design document. The <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/06/bethesdas-starfield-direct-shows-off-a-massive-galactic-scale-space-rpg/" rel="external nofollow">deafening prerelease hype for the game</a> emphasizes its inclusion of “over 1,000 planets,” across hundreds of realistically rendered star systems throughout the galaxy. That promotion has also focused on just how much stuff there is to do across those myriad planets; Bethesda Head of Publishing Pete Hines <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/v_LCiIY0gLQ?feature=share&amp;t=4033" rel="external nofollow">said in a recent interview with IGN</a> that he’s spent 150–160 hours in the game and “hasn’t even come close” to seeing everything.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		After a few dozen hours with a prerelease version of Starfield, I’m comfortable saying that Hines isn’t being hyperbolic. One look at the game’s intricate star map and the myriad star systems you can reach with a series of warp-speed jumps is enough to give you vertigo.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="20230830170717_1-640x360.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="56.25" height="360" width="640" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/20230830170717_1-640x360.jpg">
	</p>

	<div>
		<em>Just a small corner of Starfield's massive star map.</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If you can focus on Starfield’s “core story” questline, which focuses on a collection of mysterious, vision-granting Artifacts strewn across the galaxy, you may well be able to reach the “ending” of the game in a reasonable amount of time. If you’re anything like me, though, you’ll find yourself quickly sidetracked by a cornucopia of optional missions that start to grow almost fractally, with each new quest flowing into offers of multiple further quests along the way.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Many of these missions are one-off simple tasks that can be completed in short order (an inordinate number of Starfield NPCs have been stiffed by some no-show pilot or another). But many more are the start of full-fledged careers, each with a seemingly never-ending series of errands that will send you bouncing back and forth between far-flung planetary systems.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Within a few hours of starting the game, I found myself engaged as a pilot in the Vanguard Navy, working as a (semi-unwilling) undercover agent for a System Defense group and taking on freelance bounty-hunting jobs. And that’s all in between answering distress calls, doing cargo runs, tracking down an electrical drain in a subterranean community, and countless other odd jobs.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The bigness of Starfield (and of space in general) isn’t up for debate. The key question, as it is in the Hitchhiker’s Guide books, is how to go about finding something interesting to do in all that space. And on that score, thus far, Starfield has been more of a mixed bag.
	</p>

	<h2>
		1,000 planets and not much on
	</h2>

	<p>
		Some expectation-setting is important here. Just because Starfield boasts over 1,000 planets, don’t go in thinking you’re getting 1,000 fully realized, Skyrim-level civilizations unto themselves. First off, a lot of the planets are gas giants that you can explore from orbit but not land on (though it’s not clear if those even count in Bethesda’s 1,000-plus number). But even for the rocky planets you can land on, a random “off the beaten path” sampling seems more likely to yield a large, mostly barren landscape than a world bursting with life. Even good-old Earth is subject to this rule, as the planet was made desolate years before the game's events by the environmental catastrophe that first sent humans to the stars.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To be fair, you can get lucky and pick a random location full of lush vegetation and colourful fauna. I stumbled on one full of large, grazing beasts alongside carnivorous dinosaurs that wouldn’t look out of place in a natural history museum diorama.
	</p>

		<em>"Another dead rock."</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Thus far, though, most of Starfield’s sprawling galaxy seems taken up by much less lively planets. My computer-controlled partner put a fine point on this during a random exploratory visit to one of these locales. “Another dead rock,” she said as we disembarked. “Well, at least we can scour it for materials.”
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To be fair, even on the deadest of planets, your hand scanner will likely pick out a handful of points of interest that initially show up as “unknown” features, often a few hundred meters distant from your landing site. And you can definitely spend a minute or two trudging past the odd crater to get to them, bouncing through the air with a back-mounted boost pack to pass the time.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If you do, you might find a cave filled with bioluminescent fungus, an abandoned outpost being ransacked by pirates, or a downed ship that you can steal after killing its crew (hilariously, the dead bodies from that encounter are still hanging around my cockpit as I travel the stars, with no apparent way to remove them). You might even stumble on a self-contained micro-story: a group of stranded miners that need a lift off the planet or corpses that have been messily devoured by hordes of slug-like aliens (and look out—they’re still hungry).
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="20230828231003_1-1-640x360.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="56.25" height="360" width="640" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/20230828231003_1-1-640x360.jpg">
	</p>

	<div>
		<em>For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get these dead bodies off my stolen ship.</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Even without 160 hours devoted to the game, though, these procedurally generated encounters are already starting to feel kind of repetitive. Once you’ve stumbled on one automated mining facility whose robots react negatively to your presence, you’ve pretty much seen them all. Even mining for the scattered bits of raw elemental material on these planets starts to feel like a waste of time once you realize you can buy that same material for a relative pittance of in-game currency.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		So yes, you can definitely find something to do by just picking a point on Starfield’s map and indulging your wanderlust. Just don’t expect that kind of wandering to result in No Man’s Sky levels of wondrous discovery most of the time.
	</p>

	<h2>
		A sea of humanity
	</h2>

	<p>
		What Starfield lacks in random planet-hopping, it more than makes up for in the “core” planets where you’ll be assigned and complete most of the game’s myriad quests. There’s a staggering level of detail put into the major cities, settlements, and colonies of these carefully crafted hub worlds. That’s especially apparent in the architecture, from sprawling retro-futuristic walkable cities to bustling commercial trade hubs to subterranean mines crowded with the dregs of society, and everything in between.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Beyond the buildings themselves, the highly varied human scenery gives these planets a sense of liveliness that’s often missing from space exploration sims. A short walk between buildings will see you passing dozens of passersby in all shapes and sizes. Many of these NPCs are only equipped with a single line of dialogue, but a surprising number will engage in a full-fledged back-and-forth conversation if you so much as say “hi.”
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="20230830170930_1-640x360.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="56.25" height="360" width="640" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/20230830170930_1-640x360.jpg">
	</p>

	<div>
		<em>Not every citizen has a story to tell, but a surprising number do.</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Speaking of which, I hope you’re in the mood for a lot of chatting. A large amount of my time in Starfield thus far has been spent not exploring the galaxy but in a monotonous conversation interface, staring head-on at an NPC while they talk my ear off about some problem.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		You can speed through the captions and skip through the spoken dialogue to save some of this conversation time, but that would deaden the impact of the sharp writing and usually well-delivered voice acting (even random shopkeepers end up often conveying a lot of character through small gradations in accent, tone, and cadence). Then again, skipping through also limits your exposure to incredibly stiff motion capture and lip-syncing that makes every character look a bit like a Disney animatronic. The overall effect falls <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/06/mario-recreated-in-unreal-engine-4-games-have-an-uncanny-valley-too/" rel="external nofollow">deep in the uncanny valley</a>, especially in the not-uncommon situations where a character’s gaze or body language gets stuck facing away from you.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		More than that, the large amount of time spent staring down literal talking heads from an unchanging first-person perspective makes for a relatively unengaging “tell, don’t show” storytelling style. There were points in these endless conversations where I found myself yearning for a quick camera angle change, a cut scene, or even a Rockstar Games-style “talk while traveling from point A to point B” info dump.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
</div>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<p>
		<img alt="20230827153048_1-640x360.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="56.25" height="360" width="640" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/20230827153048_1-640x360.jpg">

		<em>Get ready to spend a lot of time staring at dead-eyed talking heads like this.</em>
	</div>

	<div>
		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<p>
		When you get to talk back to these floating heads, most conversations don’t seem to branch so much as flow into short tributaries that quickly merge back into the same main river, regardless of your choice. Your conversation partner will answer the tone of your chosen response (snarky, self-assured, cynical, etc.) with an appropriate contextual response, then go right back to what they were obviously planning to say anyway. Your computer-controlled partner might express some moral qualms about a particular response chain, but thus far, that hasn’t had much noticeable effect on any gameplay outcomes.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		As for the content of those conversations, it’s been heavy on the expositional “universe building” side and relatively light on the “character building” side. That’s not an entirely bad thing; you can really sense the care the Starfield team has put into building the backstory and history of humanity’s star-faring future. It’s been fascinating learning about the massive war that split humanity into three barely tolerant factions and the incompatible philosophies behind how those factions live their lives. But I also can’t say I’ve developed a close attachment to even the major characters I’ve encountered thus far, who have tended toward paper-thin motivations and relatively cliched personality types (the science nerd, the true believer, the money man, etc.).
	</p>

	<h2>
		Performance
	</h2>
	Given Bethesda's history with open-world games, it's fair to worry about technical issues popping up in the launch version of Starfield. Surprisingly, though, such problems have been minimal in my time with the game. There were only a small handful of noticeable frame rate hitches, conversation partners looking in the wrong direction, and characters getting temporarily stuck in scenery or doorways. There were also more than a few instances where a background character kept loudly chattering while I was trying to converse with someone, but to be honest I can't be 100 percent sure that wasn't intentional.

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		There is one technical annoyance built into the game's structure, though: loading. Hopping from one star system to another can require a lot of explicit transitions, from planet to ship to orbit to the new star system and finally to the new planet's surface. Most of those transitions include a short bit of loading, which breaks up the experience just enough to make the vast, interconnected galaxy feel a bit like a disjointed set of unrelated planets.
	</p>

	<h2>
		What would you do?
	</h2>

	<p>
		Aside from NPC chatter and random planetary exploration, the actual quests in Starfield break down into a few broad categories. For me, the most engaging of these by far has been the space-based ship-to-ship battles. The main strategy in these dogfights involves managing your speed and angle to maneuver your ship behind or astride the enemy so your forward weapons can lock onto them without them locking onto you.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		After that, unloading your various energy weapons and missiles is more a matter of energy management than precise aim. On top of all that, juggling the ship’s limited power supply between shields, engines, and weaponry on the fly (while also ordering necessary hull repairs when needed) made me feel more like a Star Trek captain than most actual Star Trek games I can think of.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="20230828150624_1-640x360.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="56.25" height="360" width="640" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/20230828150624_1-640x360.jpg">
	</p>

	<div>
		<em>Getting the drop on an enemy from below? It's easy in zero gravity.</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Ground-based enemy engagements are a little less... well, engaging. That’s largely thanks to enemies that have an annoying tendency to simply stand out in the open and absorb incoming fire, interspersed with a few damage sponges that charge at you with close-quarters attacks instead. Even a set of massive, fearsome, supposedly city-destroying beasts you encounter in one questline can be pretty easily manipulated by hiding behind a wall and then doubling back after a few quick shots.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		On the plus side, using your boost-pack to double- or triple-jump around some of the more vertically oriented battle locations brings to mind the more acrobatic portions of Bethesda’s own Doom reboot (though in a much less frenetic fashion). And the game provides various weapon types that each feel suitably impactful.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
</div>

<div itemprop="articleBody">
	<p>
		<img alt="20230829095402_1-640x360.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="56.25" height="360" width="640" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/20230829095402_1-640x360.jpg">
	</p>

	<div>
		<em>Starfield has some breathtaking vistas if you know where to look.</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		There are some major questlines where these action-oriented encounters are practically unavoidable, though loading up on med packs or ship parts can help even reflex-deficient players brute force their way through most battles. But there are also a lot of questlines that go out of their way to suggest and even encourage less lethal means to get to the same goal. That can mean rolling the (virtual) dice in an attempt to persuade a hostile human, stealthily infiltrating a location without being seen, or simply paying your way out of a situation with extra money earned from other encounters. Which path you choose depends heavily on which of the wide menu of new skills you choose to focus on as you level up (including quite a few that can help you become a criminal mastermind if you so choose).
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		And then there are the subsystems underlying these major gameplay systems. Mined resources can be put into research projects (which teach you how to craft your own items), into mods for weapons and spacesuits, or even into sprawling, resource-extracting outposts on far-flung planets. Those with more in-game money can trick out their ships (and even choose the location of their new snap-on parts) or eventually buy and outfit property in a hub city or habitat modules away from it.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		I haven’t spent much time examining these subsystems, largely because buying (or mining) and carrying around the necessary elemental resources so far feels like more trouble than it’s worth. I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time simply juggling a huge amount of carryable junk between my backpack, my computer-controlled partner’s backpack, and the hold (and floor) of my growing fleet of ships. Virtual hoarders, beware—you’re committing to a veritable lifetime of inventory management menus and tough decisions about what to drop before you return to the ship.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Despite the gripes I’ve mentioned above, I’ve still found it startlingly easy to fall deep into Starfield’s (just-short-of-literal) galaxy of pure content. That fractal quest design pattern makes it very compelling to stretch out a play session for “just one more jump” until you look up and suddenly it’s three hours past when you planned to sleep.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		I’m not sure if that loop will be strong enough to push me up to and past the 150-hour mark. One thing is clear, though; if we have to wait another eight years for a Fallout 4-scale single-player adventure from Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield has enough raw content to keep a certain type of space-fiction-obsessed player plugging away for a good chunk of that wait.
	</p>

			It’s still unclear what this exclusivity contract means for Bethesda, but <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/25/22372077/amd-starfield-dlss-fsr-exclusive-frank-azor" rel="external nofollow">AMD made it clear to The Verge</a> last week that there’s nothing stopping Bethesda from adding DLSS to Starfield. “If they want to do DLSS, they have AMD’s full support,” said AMD gaming chief Frank Azor. That could mean there’s a period of exclusivity where only AMD’s FSR 2 technology is supported, or Bethesda could have simply prioritized FSR over DLSS initially.

			Bethesda hasn’t responded to repeated attempts by The Verge to clarify the status of DLSS for Starfield. Nvidia simply pointed us to Bethesda. It’s now likely that community modders will step in to get DLSS working in Starfield until Bethesda is ready to discuss the situation.
