	PC gaming is no longer seen as a dying industry. The rise of digital stores, combined with some excellent games from huge publishers down to small indie teams, has made the PC platform a very viable place to make games.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In 2024, we are looking forward to playing a ton of great PC titles, some of which were supposed to be released last year. Our list includes quite a few strategy titles in many different styles, a genre that has proven itself highly successful on the PC platform.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We will mention <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/here-are-our-picks-for-the-most-anticipated-xbox-series-xs-games-of-2024/" rel="external nofollow">that all of our games on the Xbox 2024 list </a>are planned for a PC release as well. We didn't want to duplicate our Xbox list for our most anticipated PC games, so we picked some more upcoming titles, many of which will be released either exclusively for PC or will likely be the prime platform for that game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em><strong>Update: March 24</strong>—We have added three more games to this list: Age of Mythology: Retold, Phantom Fury, and No Rest for the Wicked. We have also removed some games released in 2024 and changed the release date for Homeworld 3.</em>

	SK hynix has showed that their GDDR7 VRAM memory chips, that are expected to power future graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD, can reach up-to 40Gbps in speeds.
</h3>

<p>
	At the start of this month, the specs for the <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/gddr7-memory-for-graphics-cards-officially-announced/" title="GDDR7 memory for graphics cards officially announced" rel="external nofollow">GDDR7 VRAM memory chips were officially announced</a> by JEDEC. JEDEC, also known as Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, looks after the specifications of all the various industry devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The current-generation of graphics cards use a version of GDDR6 to power their memory. While AMD uses normal GDDR6, Nvidia uses modified GDDR6X in its more expensive versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While GDDR6 came with base speeds of 16Gbps, GDDR7 specs double that to 32Gbps. But those are just base speeds.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Initially, all graphics cards with the GDDR6 memory came just 14Gbps, rather than the base 16Gbps. Though the later versions have allowed much faster speeds, even faster than the official specs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Reports suggest that initially, graphics cards based on GDDR7 could come with just 28Gbps memory chips, rather than the officially stated 32Gbps. Graphics cards with 32Gbps could come in later versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now it seems that the GDDR7 speeds could reach way higher than the official specs too.

In that showcase, SK hynix has stated that it’s intending to make GDDR7 chips which can reach massive 40Gbps in speeds.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If that is not enough, it’s also going to release these chips in both 16Gb (2GB) and even 24Gb (3GB) capacities later. Till now, graphics cards have come with just 2GB VRAM memory chips. But with 3GB chips coming, expect future graphics cards to come with even bigger memory capacities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While AMD Radeon RX 8000 graphics card are unlikely to use GDDR7, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 graphics cards may come with GDDR7. But those GDDR7 VRAM memory is expected to be capped at 28Gbps and come in just 2GB capacities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It’s only when Nvidia releases RTX 5000 refresh or RTX 6000 graphics cards is when one will see full powered GDDR7 chips. Same for AMD Radeon graphics cards, which may make use of them only in RX 9000 series.

	In January this year, <a href="https://www.techradar.com/pro/exclusive-samsung-to-showcase-the-worlds-fastest-gddr7-memory-next-month-37-gbps-is-a-big-improvement-for-gpu-but-others-are-catching-up" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">TechRadar reported</a>, <a href="https://videocardz.com/newz/samsung-to-showcase-37-gbps-gddr7-memory-for-next-gen-gpus-at-isscc" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" title="">via VideoCardz</a>, that Samsung was going to showcase GDDR7 memory chips reaching 37Gbps speeds in February. However, we are not aware how much was discussed back then.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What we do know now is that as per Hardwareluxx, Samsung says that their GDDR7 chips will start from 32Gbps speeds. However, due to efficiency reasons, it will initially come with a cap of 28Gbps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Samsung claims that their chips will run at 1.1v, that is lower than the official 1.2v specs. All these improvements allows 20% better power efficiency.
</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">
	Conclusion
</h3>

<p>
	Faster VRAM memory chips are always welcome. Especially those reaching 37-40Gbps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The only major memory chipmaker missing from the speeds announcements is Micron. <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/gddr6-gddr6xs-successor-gddr7-coming-for-gpu-next-year/" title="GDDR6 &amp; GDDR6X’s Successor GDDR7 Coming For GPU Next Year" rel="external nofollow">Which had announced</a> a year ago that their GDDR7 offerings were going to release in the first half of this year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	How much will these faster GDDR7 VRAM memory chips actually help in real world usage, that we can only confirm when graphics cards using them when they are officially released.

In our review, we noted that the game's overall performance on the PC could "be a rough point if you're not on a high-end system."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Well, it looks like the final PC version of the $69.99 game, which launched on March 21, is getting slammed on Steam in part because of performance problems. <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/2054970/Dragons_Dogma_2/" rel="external nofollow">The game's Steam page</a> currently has a "Mostly Negative" label from the over 14,000 player reviews.

<p>
	Many of those negative reviews have come from players who are not happy with the microtransactions for in-game content. <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2054970/view/4106792732433556918?l=english" rel="external nofollow">In a post on Steam</a>, developer and publisher Capcom points out that extra in-game content can also be claimed by just playing the game itself.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, more troubling are the reports of frame rate and performance issues with the PC version of <em>Dragon's Dogma 2</em>. Capcom has posted this note on those issues:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		A large amount of CPU usage is allocated to each character and calculating the impact of their physical presence in various areas. In certain situations where numerous characters appear simultaneously, the CPU usage can be very high and may affect the frame rate. We are aware that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have a limited effect; however, we are looking into ways to improve performance in the future.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Capcom added it is also looking into reports of other bugs and of the game crashing for some players, adding that the team will address these problems "starting from those with the highest priority in patches in the near future."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, Capcom announced it plans to add a way for PC gamers who have already started playing <em>Dragon's Dogma 2</em> to restart the game. Right now, there's no word on when these patches and updates will be released.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, we have seen a number of PC ports of multiplatform games sold at high prices encounter a number of post-launch performance problems and bugs, including <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/respawn-admits-star-wars-jedi-survivor-sucks-for-a-percentage-of-pc-players/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Star Wars Jedi: Survivor</em></a>, <em><a href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/review-the-last-of-us-part-1-on-pc---its-so-good-yet-also-so-bad/" rel="external nofollow">The Last of Us Part I</a></em>, and others. It seems that this trend continues with <em>Dragon's Dogma 2</em>.

		I mean "dumb" in the way most heavy metal lyrics are dumb, but you find yourself rocking out nonetheless. Dumb like when you laugh uncontrollably at the sight of someone getting conked in the head and falling over backward. Dumb as in the silliest bits of <i>Monty Python and the Holy Grail</i>, just nowhere near as self-aware (unless, due to translation issues, this game actually is self-aware, then I apologize).
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<i>Dragon’s Dogma 2</i> (<em>DD2</em>) reminds me of playing another huge, dumb, enjoyable game: <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/11/skyrim-sells-a-reported-35-million-units-in-2-days-shows-demand-for-single-player-gaming/" rel="external nofollow"><i>The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim</i></a>. Not the first time you play through it, though. I’m talking about the second or third run-through (or that 100-plus-hour save in which you refuse to finish the game), and your admiration of this huge, rich world gives way to utter ridiculousness. You one-shot dragons with your <a href="https://www.thegamer.com/skyrim-stealth-archer-build/" rel="external nofollow">broken stealth-archer build</a>, you put <a href="https://www.escapistmagazine.com/skyrim-bucket-robbery-is-a-testament-to-player-creativity/" rel="external nofollow">buckets on the heads of NPCs</a> to rob them, and you marvel at how the most effective fast travel is <a href="https://kotaku.com/skyrims-horse-tilting-glitch-redefines-fast-travel-1788754191" rel="external nofollow">horse tilting</a>. You lunge into possibilities, choose chaos, and appreciate all the ways you can do so.

	</figure>

	<p>
		<i>DD2</i> gives me those multifaceted <i>Skyrim</i> thrills and chuckles (and a friend confirmed <em>Morrowind </em>works here, too). One time, I had to reload the game because my character—the “Arisen,” savior of the continent, heralded throughout the land—got stuck between a stone hut and an angled hill behind it. Someday, he will challenge the world-conquering dragon, but today, he can’t turn sideways or climb three feet.

	<p>
		Another time, a band of nearby goblins launched an attack against my squad and a band of nearby knights. The knights’ leader, midway through a lengthy, high-falutin dialogue dirge, just kept talking. Even when a goblin set one of his soldiers on fire less than two feet to his right, he kept yapping.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<i>DD2</i> has a huge, rich, and varied world, full of systems that just barely fit together, regularly bashing into one another in ways that delight, annoy, and astound. But there is a solid, if quirky, game at its core that rewards exploration and experimentation. The plot, while overwrought with nobility and rebirth and destinies, is intriguing in its broad strokes but let down by the aforementioned dialogue.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The game has made me say, “This is so ridiculous” and “This is amazing” to myself in roughly equal amounts, and that feels like an achievement.

	<h2 id="The medieval fantasy gig economy">
		The medieval fantasy gig economy
	</h2>

	<p>
		If you’ve never played the original 2012 <i>Dragon’s Dogma,</i> well, neither have I. Here’s the setup: You are the Chosen One. Every so often, an omnipresent dragon kills a dude, eats his heart like a grape off a cheese platter, and then the spirit of that hero, The Arisen, is reborn in somebody else. Your job is to challenge the dragon again and again and again. It’s like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHZl2naX1Xk" rel="external nofollow">the Architect scene</a> near the end of <i>The Matrix: Reloaded</i>, but with a dragon fight instead of an Existentialism 499 lecture.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Being He of the Excavated Chest comes with some neat benefits. The big one is Pawns, who are fighters that exist between planes, helping the Arisen with magic, archery, sword-fighting, trickery, or the like. You, The Arisen, get one Pawn that stays with you, leveling up as you go. You buy equipment for this “Main Pawn,” hand it gear when your pack gets too heavy, and it can’t really permanently die.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		That's not the case for the other two pawns you can have. In a system that evokes FromSoftware’s cleverly limited online aspects, you can choose bog-standard generated pawns or pick from characters other <i>Dogma</i> players have built out, each with different battle traits and unique skills. These are medieval fantasy gig workers, almost too literally. They don’t level up with you, so when you grow past them, you give them a gift from your inventory, rate them, and send them back into the ether.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If the game didn’t feel somewhat off-kilter before, the Pawn system is where it can really earn its bizarro bona fides. I grew fond of one rogue-ish knife fighter in my early game party, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talladega_Nights:_The_Ballad_of_Ricky_Bobby" rel="external nofollow">RickyBobby</a>. While accompanying some soldiers, my party had to fight some harpies. As we were walking away from that fight, the game popped up some tutorial text on my screen, explaining how anybody who falls into deep water will be consumed by “The Brine” and cannot be revived.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		A moment later, I realized why I received that lesson: RickyBobby had been picked up by a harpy, dropped into a deep canyon, and thereby released from this plane of existence. In <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024/02/i-tried-to-jump-back-into-jrpgs-with-ffvii-rebirth-and-that-was-a-big-mistake/" rel="external nofollow">most RPGs</a>, the death of a party member is a shocking aberration. In <i>DD2</i>, it’s a text box that has you press “A” to continue.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Rest in power, RickyBobby. You were definitely a guy who knifed some goblins.

I know it’s just random NPC AI, but ol’ Barry really embodies the game’s blunder-into-disaster spirit. He will cast a healing orb spell directly under the knees of a giant cyclops that has already killed him four times. He’s always the last to catch up when I’ve jumped across some ledge or climbed a ladder. I can make fun of my big stupid mage, but you keep Barry’s name out of your mouth. He’s trying his best.

		You won't miss all of your Pawns. They talk a lot, and after a few hours of play, you've heard pretty much every variation of what they can say. Constant remarks about how there are ingredients nearby, and did you know that you can <em>use</em> ingredients, to make <em>items</em>? They'll either pass you by, or you'll turn the volume slider on your pawns way down. Or maybe take just a minute longer to revive them when they fall, enjoying the silence.

	<h2 id="Getting absolutely owned and loving it">
		Getting absolutely owned and loving it
	</h2>

	<p>
		Like almost every other part of this game, combat is hectic and mildly unhinged, but this part seems intentional. It’s different from class to class, whether you’re an up-close fighter, a back-line archer, a tactical mage or sorcerer, or one of the more niche classes. Conveniently, your hero can swap “vocations” at any town, so no one playthrough is limited to seeing just one kind of fight.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Every encounter is interesting in its own way, but the really big monsters are the game’s specialty. You’ve got a “Grab” command that you and your teammates can use to pin or drag down a tall monster. Or you can climb directly onto certain huge foes while they’re distracted. I’m happy to report that, as an archer, you can do the sensible thing and jam one of your explosive arrows into the giant with your hands, then let go and scamper away.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Also, you can sometimes pick up smaller enemies and throw them at other enemies or off ledges. You’re not the only one left to suffer the cruelty of chaos.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Enemy encounters happen wherever you run into them. Sometimes, you get the jump on a pack of lizardmen and can quietly put an arrow in the leader’s head. Sometimes, you’re talking to the traveling merchant, and your Pawns have to fend off a three-story beast that stomped too close to town while you were negotiating. There’s a bit of close-quarters cave fighting, too, and some solo challenges. But mostly, you’re just getting jumped and figuring out your positioning and strategies on the fly.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The random violence makes all your decisions more interesting. I’m playing an archer and have to pick the four skills I can equip based on assisting the Pawns who are doing the real damage. What’s more effective, a horizontal spread of arrows, rapid auto-aimed shots at the nearest baddie, or making explosive arrows that I can plug into a big dude’s back? Do I spend money on my armor because I’m a low-HP Legolas-aping creampuff or a better sword for my main Pawn? Who needs to hold onto more healing potions or one-shot damage spells?
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		These kinds of questions matter in <i>DD2</i> more than in other games due to scarcity. I’m nowhere near the endgame, but in the first 10 hours, you are not flush with <i>anything</i>. You can only fast-travel to a few spots on the map, and doing so requires a very rare and expensive item. You’re always strapped for cash, but you’ve also got a real weight limit, so you’re regularly handing off, selling, and value-sorting. When you take tough hits, you lose maximum hit points, and you can only restore them by staying at an inn or using a camping kit. Inns are expensive, there aren’t many campsites, and your kits are wasted if enemies attack during the night. If you’re heading in straight from <i>Baldur’s Gate 3</i>, it’s a real low-fantasy shock.
	</p>

	<p>
		<i>DD2</i> is a long, long game, from what I can tell. You’re going to walk just about everywhere, which means surprises, encounters, and drudgery. There is one save file (for now), and the game <a href="https://www.thegamer.com/dragons-dogma-2-punishes-you-for-respawning-from-autosave-one-save-file-controversy/" rel="external nofollow">lightly punishes you for save-scumming it</a>. Some side quests have to be done in a timely fashion, so you can’t do all of them. Quests sometimes have maddeningly vague objectives and are marked on your map in a broad area, not a single point. A power fantasy, this game is not.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

		And yet, I found myself sticking with it. Like <i><a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=009773542741016272635:e6s_fsvpe7o&amp;q=https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/03/is-elden-ring-really-that-hard-well-it-depends-what-you-mean-by-hard/3/&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjTv4Dss4aFAxWoMlkFHWAiAYcQFnoECAkQAg&amp;usg=AOvVaw0wffFR7HoTRoRyeGtm_UhV" rel="external nofollow">Elden Ring</a></i>, the game plays with the balance between punishing and rewarding exploration. Faced with an unbeatable foe or an uncertain path forward, you can often instead wander a bit, hire some new Pawns, swap out your vocation and skills, or use the game’s loose physics and enemy AI to cheese your way through. If a harpy can kill RickyBobby instantly, I think you’re free to do whatever it takes to get by.

	<p>
		Lots of sites and users are reporting <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/dragons-dogma-2-pc-performance-best-settings" rel="external nofollow">CPU-bound frame-rate stutters</a> and <a href="https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/dragons-dogma-2-performance-analysis/" rel="external nofollow">sluggish performance</a> on PC and consoles in this first week after release, especially in busy town scenes. I’ve seen some of that on PC (with an RTX 3070). Every so often, the frame rate will shoot down to cheap webcam levels. I locked the refresh rate to 60 fps, and I'm in no danger at all of hitting that. And I've been frustrated that the game lacks graphics presets besides “Low,” “High,” and setting every single variable yourself.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		For its part, <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2054970/view/4106792732433556918" rel="external nofollow">Capcom is aware</a> and is "looking into ways to improve performance in the future." Capcom and performance reviewers have suggested the issue lies with NPC behavior bogging down the CPU, which likely causes stutter and dropped frames. This <a href="https://www.ign.com/articles/capcom-is-aware-of-dragons-dogma-2-frame-rate-issues-on-pc-looking-into-fixes" rel="external nofollow">might get better</a> with patches and feedback, but waiting to hear that it definitely improved might be a smart move. Also, please do not try to run this game natively on Steam Deck—not now and probably never in the future.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Capcom also did itself zero favors by releasing <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/dlc/2054970/Dragons_Dogma_2/" rel="external nofollow">a page of micro-transaction-like DLC</a> for its $70 PC game. As such, the game is hovering around "Mixed" reviews today. Nearly all of the in-game items I see are things you can get through in-game play (and <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2054970/view/4106792732433556918" rel="external nofollow">Capcom has said so</a>), and there are limits to how many you can buy of most items. But for something like the teleporting Portcrystal, which takes a long time to obtain early in the game, seeing it as a $3 purchase is sure to irk some players.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<em>Dragon's Dogma 2</em> doesn't always feel like a modern, polished open-world game, but it has all the weight of one. If, like me, you're okay with some bugs, some goofs, and some randomly punishing difficulty in service of a big, impressive adventure, I think it's worth the pain. Destiny calls you toward the dragon, but the real victories are the goblins we toss along the way.

			According to the DOJ, its antitrust case against Microsoft cleared the way for Apple — then teetering on bankruptcy — to launch its breakout success: the iPod. Decades and trillions of dollars later, Apple is in the hot seat. And because time is a flat circle, it’s facing an antitrust case built directly on that 1999 case against Microsoft.

Microsoft</em></a>. If you were a teen in the ’90s (or maybe not yet born — in which case, good for you), you <em>may</em> have missed this landmark antitrust case, but here’s the short version: Microsoft got nervous about the rise of the web and used its position as a monopoly to squash would-be competitors, most notably, Netscape.

If you’re keeping score at home, this is, in fact, <em>illegal, </em>courtesy of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

That didn’t end up happening, but Microsoft walked away from the trial weakened and with <a href="https://www.justice.gov/atr/case-document/final-judgment-133" rel="external nofollow">a long list of “prohibited conduct”</a> instructing the company to refrain from anticompetitive shenanigans in its dealings with OEMs and developers. <a href="https://www.wired.com/2000/11/microsoft-7/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Wired</em>’s<em> </em>recounting of the case from 2000</a> is a fascinating read on the whole thing.

			In today’s case, the Department of Justice doesn’t merely imply that Apple benefited from the results of <em>United States v. Microsoft; </em>it comes right out and says it. Take section 26 of the complaint:

			It goes on to detail how iTunes initially only worked on Mac computers; after the consent decree, Apple developed a version for Windows, and the iPod started going gangbusters. <div class="duet--article--article-body-component">

			The case versus Microsoft also echoes throughout <em>DOJ v. Apple</em> with one adorably weird word: middleware. Microsoft’s control over middleware — software that allows <em>other software</em> to run on the operating system, like web browsers or media players — was at the heart of <em>US v. Microsoft</em>. The DOJ concluded that Microsoft used various bullying tactics to keep other companies from developing middleware that would compete with or draw developer attention away from its own platforms — <a href="https://www.justice.gov/atr/us-v-microsoft-courts-findings-fact#iiii:~:text=102.-,Microsoft%20was%20not%20content,-to%20merely%20quash" rel="external nofollow">threatening to stop cooperating with Intel</a> when it tried developing platform-level software and undermining Java development, while <a href="https://www.justice.gov/atr/us-v-microsoft-courts-findings-fact#via:~:text=Microsoft%20also%20discouraged%20its%20business%20allies" rel="external nofollow">dissuading its allies</a> from working with Sun Microsystems. <div class="duet--article--article-body-component">
		<p>
			The DOJ invokes the M-word when it describes “super apps,” which it calls “a kind of middleware that can host apps, services, and experiences without requiring developers to use the iPhone’s APIs or code.” They really haven’t taken off in the US; the closest thing we have might be the Uber app, where you can request a ride, order dinner, and reserve an e-bike all in one place. But <a href="https://www.theverge.com/22738395/social-media-super-app-facebook-wechat-shopping" rel="external nofollow">true super apps as they exist in other markets</a> just aren’t a thing here, no doubt in part because<strong> </strong>Apple doesn’t allow them on iOS. The DOJ argues that this is because Apple sees them as a threat to its platform — and that Apple blocking them is a major impediment to innovation.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>

	<div class="duet--article--article-body-component">
		<p>
			The complaint, as a whole, paints a picture of Apple in a similar moment to Microsoft at the height of its power. Microsoft saw the rise of the web coming and realized its dominance was threatened. The DOJ portrays Apple seeing a similar problem as the iPhone gained success: “Apple’s internal documents show that, soon after the iPhone’s introduction and notwithstanding its success, the company began to fear that disintermediation of its platform and the commoditization of the iPhone would threaten Apple’s substantial profits from iPhone sales and related revenue streams.”

		<p>

	<div class="duet--article--article-body-component">

			“Disintermediation” of PCs is what Microsoft feared, and the DOJ alleges it’s what Apple fears for the iPhone. Microsoft was absolutely right to be afraid — and it seems Apple is, too.

	API should help more games get future FSR improvements without a game update.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Last summer, AMD debuted the latest version of its <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/08/amds-fps-doubling-fsr-3-is-coming-soon-and-not-just-to-radeon-graphics-cards/" rel="external nofollow">FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) upscaling technology</a>. While version 2.x focused mostly on making lower-resolution images look better at higher resolutions, version 3.0 focused on AMD's "Fluid Motion Frames," which attempt to boost FPS by generating interpolated frames to insert between the ones that your GPU is actually rendering.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Today, the company is <a href="https://community.amd.com/t5/gaming/amd-fsr-3-1-announced-at-gdc-2024-fsr-3-available-and-upcoming/ba-p/674027" rel="external nofollow">announcing FSR 3.1</a>, which among other improvements decouples the upscaling improvements in FSR 3.x from the Fluid Motion Frames feature. FSR 3.1 will be available "later this year" in games whose developers choose to implement it.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Fluid Motion Frames and Nvidia's equivalent DLSS Frame Generation usually work best when a game is already running at a high frame rate, and even then can be more prone to mistakes and odd visual artifacts than regular FSR or DLSS upscaling. FSR 3.0 was an all-or-nothing proposition, but version 3.1 should let you pick and choose what features you want to enable.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		It also means you can use FSR 3.0 frame generation with other upscalers like DLSS, especially useful for 20- and 30-series Nvidia GeForce GPUs that support DLSS upscaling but not DLSS Frame Generation.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"When using FSR 3 Frame Generation with any upscaling quality mode OR with the new 'Native AA' mode, it is highly recommended to be always running at a minimum of ~60 FPS before Frame Generation is applied for an optimal high-quality gaming experience and to mitigate any latency introduced by the technology," wrote AMD's Alexander Blake-Davies in the post announcing FSR 3.1.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Generally, FSR's upscaling image quality falls a little short of Nvidia's DLSS, but FSR 2 closed that gap a bit, and FSR 3.1 goes further. AMD highlights two specific improvements: one for "temporal stability," which will help reduce the flickering and shimmering effect that FSR sometimes introduces, and one for ghosting reduction, which will reduce unintentional blurring effects for fast-moving objects.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The biggest issue with these new FSR improvements is that they need to be implemented on a game-to-game basis. FSR 3.0 was announced in August 2023, and AMD now trumpets that there are 40 "available and upcoming" games that support the technology, of which just 19 are currently available. There are a lot of big-name AAA titles in the list, but that's still not many compared to the sum total of all PC games or even the 183 titles that <a href="https://community.amd.com/t5/gaming-discussions/latest-amd-fsr-2-amp-3-supported-games-list/td-p/549534" rel="external nofollow">currently support</a> FSR 2.x.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		AMD wants to help solve this problem in FSR 3.1 by introducing a stable FSR API for developers, which AMD says "makes it easier for developers to debug and allows forward compatibility with updated versions of FSR." This may eventually lead to more games getting future FSR improvements for "free," without the developer's effort.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		AMD didn't mention any hardware requirements for FSR 3.1, though presumably, the company will still support a reasonably wide range of recent GPUs from AMD, Nvidia, and Intel. FSR 3.0 is formally supported on Radeon RX 5000, 6000, and 7000 cards, Nvidia's RTX 20-series and newer, and Intel Arc GPUs. It will also bring FSR 3.x features to games that use the Vulkan API, not just DirectX 12, and the Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) so it can be used in console titles as well as PC games.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	It's been a long time in coming, but the Reddit forum and social networking website finally launched its IPO today on the New York Stock Exchange after first <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/reddit-has-filed-to-go-public-and-hopes-to-be-worth-15-billion-on-ipo-day/" rel="external nofollow">announcing its plans in December 2021</a>. Reddit's first day as a publicly traded company got a lot of attention on the positive side from investors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Reddit set the price for its IPO on Wednesday at $34 a share which was on the high side of expectations. That allowed the company and its shareholders to raise $750 million, with Reddit itself keeping $519 million.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/21/reddit-ipo-rddt-starts-trading-on-nyse.html" rel="external nofollow">CNBC</a> reports that when trading for Reddit began until the ticker name RDDT, the share price instantly went up to $47 a share. The price was as high as $57.80 at one point, but at the end of the NYSE trading day, the price settled down to $50.44 a share. That means Reddit currently has a market cap worth $9.5 billion.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of Reddit's biggest shareholders is Sam Altman, the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/21/sam-altmans-reddit-stake-worth-over-600-million-after-nyse-debut.html" rel="external nofollow">CNBC</a> says that on paper, Altman became $200 million richer today thanks to Reddit's IPO. The shares he now owns in the company are now worth over $613 million. Altman, and all other shareholders of Reddit, can't start selling their stock for another six months.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the last month, Reddit has revealed more of its financial and user numbers prior to today's IPO launch. It stated in February it had <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/reddit-reveals-its-current-financial-and-user-numbers-as-it-prepares-to-go-public/" rel="external nofollow">267.5 million active weekly users</a>, along with about 73 million daily users. Reddit said the site itself has 1 billion posts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It also said that in 2023, Reddit had revenues of $804 million, but ran at a loss of $90.8 million last year. The huge majority of its revenue came from advertising, but the company said it plans to broaden out where it can get money, including monetizing its data and from its commerce division.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Just when you thought it couldn't get any more popular, Denuvo developer Irdeto has announced the anti-cheat software's newest feature, TraceMark for Games, a tool that will let developers add a unique identifier to game footage. The technology will in theory allow developers and publishers to identify players that are leaking game footage before release, and can be set to be visible or invisible to the user so you'll have no idea if the game's using it or not.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Lest it need introduction, Denuvo is DRM software found in many big-budget PC releases. It's popular with publishers like Capcom for the obvious reasons, and generally unpopular with players, some of whom believe it negatively affects performance (which Denuvo of course denies) and resent its online check-in requirement.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Irdeto says the new tool "leverages the core invisible watermark technology trusted by Hollywood studios" and others, and "uniquely addresses the challenge of content leakage, especially during the sensitive pre-release phase of game development." It claims it will act as a deterrent to leakers, who can now be traced and will "think twice", apparently. Hey, don't we all care about "the overall integrity of the content distribution process"?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The tech will apparently work regardless of any attempts to distort the source, and Iredto reckons it will be especially useful for pre-release activities like playtests and closed betas. And, oh no, they're coming for the journalists!
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Specifically "the unique security concerns associated with press events and the distribution of review copies." So that's us taken care of.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"With the launch of TraceMark for Gaming, we are setting a new standard in anti-piracy for the gaming industry," said Irdeto SVP Niels Haverkorn. "This innovative solution not only marks a significant milestone for Irdeto but also represents a leap forward in protecting the creative and financial investments of game developers worldwide. At Irdeto, we understand the unique challenges faced by the gaming community, and TraceMark is our commitment to ensuring that these valuable assets are safeguarded throughout their lifecycle.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Love to see valuable assets safeguarded through their lifecycle. TraceMark can be combined with Denuvo's usual anti-tamper software, and expect not to see it in a game near you soon.
</p>

	While everything might seem great on paper, Microsoft insiders recently complained about the complicated relationship the tech giant shares with OpenAI. Some indicated it's <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-partnership-with-openai-raises-concern-among-insiders" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-partnership-with-openai-raises-concern-among-insiders" rel="external nofollow">an overnight "glorified IT department for the hot startup."</a> It comes on top of last year's OpenAI fiasco that led to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/after-the-openai-fiasco-sam-altman-is-back-at-the-helm" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/after-the-openai-fiasco-sam-altman-is-back-at-the-helm" rel="external nofollow">CEO Sam Altman's firing and rehiring</a> by the board of directors within a fortnight.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The insiders added that the multi-billion dollar partnership has negatively impacted Microsoft's AI department, which specializes in AI advances and development. Microsoft is reportedly more focused on its projects with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/openai" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/openai" rel="external nofollow">OpenAI</a>, which, according to a top executive who left the company because of the same issue, has contributed to the addition of more tombstones to the "<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-graveyard-microsofts-missed-opportunities" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-graveyard-microsofts-missed-opportunities" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Graveyard</a>," including Azure Cognitive Search, Azure AI Bot Service, and Kinect DK.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Since the bizzare events that led to Altman's firing and rehiring, it's like OpenAI opened a Pandora's box and can't seem to steer clear of problems that have been riddling it in the recent past. During the whole fiasco, Microsoft was relatively quiet, but rumors looming the air at the time suggested that the tech giant was ready to absorb any OpenAI staffers leaving the startup due to the issue.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a letter drafted to the board of directors, the staffers gave an ultimatum requesting for Altman's immediate reinstatement as CEO, further stating that "OpenAI is nothing without its people." Failure to adhere to this request would have led to hundreds of employees walking out of OpenAI's doors.

This has consequently led <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/elon-musk-sues-openai-and-ceo-sam-altman-for-stark-betrayal-of-the-founding-agreement-and-opting-to-go-the-for-profit-way" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/elon-musk-sues-openai-and-ceo-sam-altman-for-stark-betrayal-of-the-founding-agreement-and-opting-to-go-the-for-profit-way" rel="external nofollow">Musk to file a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman</a> for "stark betrayal of the founding agreement" and opting to go the for-profit way.

	He further criticized Microsoft and OpenAI's relationship, indicating:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>"In reality, however, OpenAI, Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world: Microsoft. Under its new board, it is not just developing but is actually refining an AGI to maximize profits for Microsoft, rather than for the benefit of humanity."</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Musk hopes the court will rule in favor and compel OpenAI to revert to its original mission and vision. But where would this leave Microsoft, which holds a 49% stake in the earnings of OpenAI's for-profit arm?

	According to the comparison website Uswitch, 47 million customers in the UK are going to be hit by mobile and broadband price rises in April. This comes at a time when the general cost of living is rising dramatically, with everything from groceries to council tax rising in price.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The figure, when split into the two categories, includes 11 million broadband customers and 36 million mobile customers being hit by price rises. Uswitch said that annual broadband bills could rise by £27.19 and annual mobile bills by £24.23.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As a switching website, Uswitch has provided some tips on how to put off the price hikes for another year. It said that the majority who are in contract will be unable to avoid the price rises without paying a penalty fee, but for others, it provides the following tips:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			Sky Broadband, Direct Save Telecom, Virgin Media and Giganet all allow customers to leave penalty free if they wish within the 30-day window of the price rise announcement - although this does not apply to Sky TV customers.
		</li>
		<li>
			Vodafone and Community Fibre are freezing prices until 2025 for those switching now ahead of the April increases.
		</li>
		<li>
			Smaller regional alternative networks, such as Trooli, Zen Internet, Hyperoptic, Hull Fibre, Link Broadband, Open Fibre, Squirrel Internet, Infinics and Yayzi offer full fibre deals and have committed to not hiking their costs for consumers throughout their current contract agreements.
		</li>
		<li>
			Mobile providers Giffgaff, Talkmobile, Lebara, SMARTY, iD Mobile, Lyca, Asda Mobile, VOXI, Honest Mobile and Sky Mobile are committed to not increasing their prices mid-contract.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Despite Uswitch’s comments about penalty fees for leaving a contract early, it did mention that it’s worth checking the small print of your agreement, as some providers do let you quit the contract without a fee. It said that Sky Broadband, Direct Save Telecom, Virgin Media, and Giganet are examples of companies that will let you exit the contract penalty-free within 30 days of a price rise announcement.

	As companies race to pair AI with general-purpose humanoid robots, Nvidia's GR00T emerges.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		In sci-fi films, the rise of humanlike artificial intelligence often comes hand in hand with a physical platform, such as an android or robot. While the most advanced <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/07/a-jargon-free-explanation-of-how-ai-large-language-models-work/7/" rel="external nofollow">AI language models</a> so far seem mostly like disembodied voices echoing from an anonymous data center, they might not remain that way for long. Some companies like <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/07/googles-rt-2-ai-model-brings-us-one-step-closer-to-wall-e/" rel="external nofollow">Google</a>, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/huge-funding-round-makes-figure-big-techs-favorite-humanoid-robot-company/" rel="external nofollow">Figure</a>, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/02/robots-let-chatgpt-touch-the-real-world-thanks-to-microsoft/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft</a>, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/12/teslas-latest-humanoid-robot-optimus-gen-2-can-handle-eggs-without-cracking-them/" rel="external nofollow">Tesla</a>, <a href="https://bostondynamics.com/blog/robots-that-can-chat/" rel="external nofollow">Boston Dynamics</a>, and others are working toward giving AI models a body. This is called "embodiment," and AI chipmaker Nvidia wants to accelerate the process.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"Building foundation models for general humanoid robots is one of the most exciting problems to solve in AI today," said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in a statement. Huang spent a portion of Nvidia's annual <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/gtc/keynote/" rel="external nofollow">GTC conference keynote</a> on Monday going over Nvidia's robotics efforts. "The next generation of robotics will likely be humanoid robotics," Huang said. "We now have the necessary technology to imagine generalized human robotics."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To that end, Nvidia <a href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/foundation-model-isaac-robotics-platform" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> Project GR00T, a general-purpose foundation model for humanoid robots. As a type of AI model itself, Nvidia hopes GR00T (which stands for "Generalist Robot 00 Technology" but sounds a lot like the famous Marvel character) will serve as an AI mind for robots, enabling them to learn skills and solve various tasks on the fly. In a <a href="https://x.com/DrJimFan/status/1769860044324319658?s=20" rel="external nofollow">tweet</a>, Nvidia researcher Linxi "Jim" Fan called the project "our moonshot to solve embodied AGI in the physical world."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is a poorly defined term that usually refers to hypothetical human-level AI (or beyond) that can learn any task a human could without specialized training. Given a capable enough humanoid body driven by AGI, one could imagine fully autonomous robotic assistants or workers. Of course, <a href="https://x.com/Grady_Booch/status/1770282624973705422?s=20" rel="external nofollow">some experts</a> think that true AGI is a long way off, so it's possible that Nvidia's goal is more aspirational than realistic. But that's also what makes Nvidia's plan a moonshot.

		"The GR00T model will enable a robot to understand multimodal instructions, such as language, video, and demonstration, and perform a variety of useful tasks," <a href="https://x.com/DrJimFan/status/1769860044324319658?s=20" rel="external nofollow">wrote</a> Fan on X. "We are collaborating with many leading humanoid companies around the world, so that GR00T may transfer across embodiments and help the ecosystem thrive." We reached out to Nvidia researchers, including Fan, for comment but did not hear back by press time.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Nvidia is designing GR00T to understand natural language and emulate human movements, potentially allowing robots to learn coordination, dexterity, and other skills necessary for navigating and interacting with the real world like a person. And as it turns out, Nvidia says that making robots shaped like humans might be the key to creating functional robot assistants.

	</div>

	<div>
		<em>Figure</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		So far, we've seen plenty of robotics platforms that aren't human-shaped, including <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/11/matic-is-a-1795-robot-vacuum-for-people-concerned-about-privacy/" rel="external nofollow">robot vacuum cleaners</a>, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/11/mother-plucker-steel-fingers-guided-by-ai-pluck-weeds-rapidly-and-autonomously/" rel="external nofollow">autonomous weed pullers</a>, industrial units used in <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2023/11/small-batch-evs-and-plenty-of-robots-hyundais-new-innovation-center/" rel="external nofollow">automobile manufacturing</a>, and even research arms that can <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/10/tired-of-laundry-folding-ai-breaks-the-robot-folding-speed-record/" rel="external nofollow">fold laundry</a>. So why focus on imitating the human form? "In a way, human robotics is likely easier," said Huang in his GTC keynote. "And the reason for that is because we have a lot more imitation training data that we can provide robots, because we are constructed in a very similar way."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		That means that researchers can feed samples of training data captured from human movement into AI models that control robot movement, teaching them how to better move and balance themselves. Also, humanoid robots are particularly convenient because they can fit anywhere a person can, and we've designed a world of physical objects and interfaces (such as tools, furniture, stairs, and appliances) to be used or manipulated by the human form.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Along with GR00T, Nvidia also debuted a new computer platform called Jetson Thor, based on Nvidia's Thor system-on-a-chip (SoC), as part of the new <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/03/nvidia-unveils-blackwell-b200-the-worlds-most-powerful-chip-designed-for-ai/" rel="external nofollow">Blackwell</a> GPU architecture, which it hopes will power this new generation of humanoid robots. The SoC reportedly includes a transformer engine capable of 800 teraflops of 8-bit floating point AI computation for running models like GR00T.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
</div>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">
	<p>
		On Monday, Nvidia also unveiled updates to its <a href="https://developer.nvidia.com/isaac-sim" rel="external nofollow">Isaac Sim</a> robotics platform, which allows robots to learn physical interactions <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/10/eureka-uses-gpt-4-and-massively-parallel-simulations-to-accelerate-robot-training/" rel="external nofollow">at an accelerated rate</a> in thousands of parallel simulated physical environments. The updates include "<a href="https://developer.nvidia.com/isaac-sim#isaac-lab" rel="external nofollow">Isaac Lab</a>" for reinforcement learning, <a href="https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/scale-ai-enabled-robotics-development-workloads-with-nvidia-osmo/" rel="external nofollow">OSMO</a> for compute orchestration, and collections of robotics pretrained models and libraries called <a href="https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/isaac-generative-ai-manufacturing-logistics/" rel="external nofollow">Isaac Manipulator and Isaac Perceptor</a>. Isaac Manipulator offers AI capabilities for robotic arms, while Isaac Perceptor provides multi-camera 3D vision capabilities for manufacturing robots. Nvidia is aiming these tools at giving robotics researchers a head start while using its development platform.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Speaking of robotics researchers, Nvidia says it is collaborating with several leading humanoid robot companies on GR00T and its other robotics initiatives. That includes names like Apptronik, <a href="https://agilityrobotics.com/" rel="external nofollow">Agility Robotics</a>, Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Fourier Intelligence, and Sanctuary AI. Nvidia could potentially do for robotics what it has done so far in AI: provide components and tools that other companies can build their own products on top of.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Figure AI, in particular, recently turned heads on social media with a video demonstration of its Figure 01 humanoid robot—which responds to verbal commands courtesy of an OpenAI back-end—after <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/huge-funding-round-makes-figure-big-techs-favorite-humanoid-robot-company/" rel="external nofollow">raising $675 million</a> in a funding round from Big Tech investors, including Nvidia. That's exactly the kind of customer Nvidia hopes to cater to with its robotics platforms in the future.
	</p>

		All this being said, if Nvidia's tools actually help achieve embodied humanoid AGI at some point in the future, it's likely to bring along deep ethical issues, including the potential for massive human job displacement. In marketing materials, the company portrays its robotics initiatives as if they are an unqualified public good. But like other Big Tech firms, ethical considerations often take a back seat to making money—or simply to pushing tech forward because it may fulfill the science fiction-inspired dreams of the engineers involved.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		According to Fan, Project GR00T is a cornerstone of his newly founded <a href="https://twitter.com/DrJimFan/status/1761052023821369639" rel="external nofollow">GEAR Lab</a> (short for "Generalist Embodied Agent Research"). You can find technical specifications for new Apple products on the landing page, as well as the ones whose release dates back to more than a decade ago. There is a search bar that you can use to pull up support pages for a particular device or desired keyword from Apple's database instead of browsing through the device cateogries.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Each device category is divided into sub-categories based on the device type and other factors. For instance, when you open the Mac category, you can find separate tabs for laptops, desktops, and macOS. Similarly, the iPhone category includes tabs for various iPhone models released over the years, iOS versions, and iPhone accessories.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For a particular hardware or software, its respective support may include information such as the year in which it was introduced. Individual device category pages also tell you how to identified your device model using serial numbers and model numbers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can download not just user manuals but also old or discontinued Apple software such as iPhoto and iDVD. However, you can't download all the older software mentioned on the landing page. For some, only limited resources are available on the Documentation page.

	The Epic Games Store is one of the few apps still supporting old, pre-Windows 10 releases. However, its days are numbered. Epic Games recently published a notification, alerting users sticking to the now-unsupported Windows versions about the impending end of support. Interestingly, that will also affect Windows 10 users, namely those running 32-bit versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to <a href="https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/news/epic-games-launcher-ending-windows-7-8-and-10-32-bit-support-in-june-2024" rel="external nofollow">a message on the official website</a>, Epic Games will pull the plug on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and 32-bit Windows 10 in June 2024. The end of support means the affected platforms will no longer receive any updates, including security patches. However, customers who are unwilling or unable to update to a newer Windows version can continue using the Epic Games Store after the specified date. At some point, though, the app may stop working partially or altogether.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After June 2024, the Epic Games Store will be officially supported on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, which is 64-bit only. As for macOS, you need macOS 10.13 or higher to continue receiving updates and support.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Today we’re giving a heads-up that the Epic Games Launcher will no longer support Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 (32-bit) starting June 2024. After this date, existing installations on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind. The Epic Games Launcher will continue supporting Windows 10 (64-bit), Windows 11, and macOS 10.13 or higher.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		After June 2024, players will still be able to use the Epic Games Launcher on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 (32-bit), just not in an officially supported manner. Epic will be unable to provide technical support for users of these operating systems, and Launcher features on these operating systems may degrade or stop working over time.

	Chips Act funding will primarily be directed toward development of Intel’s 18A node.

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Intel will receive $8.5 billion in direct funding and $11 billion in loans from the US government to expand its capacity to make high-end chips as it seeks to reinvent itself as a national champion in the sector and compete with the likes of Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		US President Joe Biden will travel to Intel’s site in Chandler, Arizona, on Wednesday to announce the package, which will go toward building new facilities for the company in the south-western state, as well as in Ohio, New Mexico and Oregon.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Biden’s intervention in Arizona—one of a handful of swing states that will decide the US presidential election pitting him against Donald Trump—comes as the Democratic president is trying to boost his languishing approval ratings on the economy.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The government funding for chip manufacturing, which was passed by Congress in 2022, is part of Biden’s sweeping agenda to revitalize domestic manufacturing in areas ranging from clean energy to semiconductors and steel.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		At an event in Reno, Nevada, on Tuesday, Biden sought to emphasize his economic achievements, contrasting them with his predecessor’s, saying he had created millions of jobs, while Trump had passed a large tax cut for the wealthy and wants “to undo everything we’ve done.”
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Intel has already committed to investing $100 billion in chip manufacturing over the next five years. It had said it expected to further benefit from US Treasury tax credits that would allow it to write off up to 25 percent of that investment.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The $8.5 billion will be distributed in tranches, subject to Intel reaching certain “milestones,” senior White House officials said. They expect the funding to lead to 30,000 jobs in the chip sector.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The officials said the funds for Intel should start to arrive later this year once the agreement is finalized. In total, it is likely to constitute the largest such grant made under the 2022 Chips and Science Act, which provided for $52 billion in subsidies to help shift semiconductor manufacturing back to the US amid geopolitical tensions with China.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters the grant would put the US on track to meet its goal of ensuring that 20 percent of the world’s most advanced chips are made in the US by the end of the decade.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The vast majority of high-end semiconductors are at present manufactured by TSMC. The US relies on “a very small number of factories in Asia for all of our most sophisticated chips,” Raimondo said, which she described as an untenable situation from a US economic and national security perspective.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Raimondo added that further grants under the Chips Act would soon follow. TSMC and Samsung, which also operate facilities in the US, are both awaiting their own subsidies packages.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Intel’s chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, called it a “defining moment for the US and Intel as we work to power the next great chapter of American semiconductor innovation,” particularly as the race to develop artificial intelligence demanded evermore powerful and sophisticated chips.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Since taking the helm at the company three years ago, Gelsinger has attempted to restore the company’s leadership in the most advanced manufacturing processes, while at the same time turning it into an attractive option to help designers build their own chips, which may also compete with Intel’s.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Gelsinger has become a vocal advocate for shifting chip manufacturing back to the US after decades of under-investment. He has said his goal is to ensure that 50 percent of all the world’s semiconductors are built in the US and Europe within a decade.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The new Chips Act funding will primarily be directed toward development of Intel’s 18A “node,” a reference to its manufacturing process for the smallest and most powerful chips. It marks the final step in Gelsinger’s plan to develop five such nodes in four years.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In February, Microsoft revealed that it would be one of Intel’s first 18A manufacturing customers.

	A research paper quietly released by Apple describes an AI model called MM1 that can answer questions and analyze images. It’s the biggest sign yet that Apple is developing generative AI capabilities.
</h3>

<p>
	While the tech industry went gaga for generative <a href="https://www.wired.com/tag/artificial-intelligence/" rel="external nofollow">artificial intelligence</a>, one giant has held back: Apple. The company has yet to introduce so much as an AI-generated emoji, and according to a <em>New York Times</em> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/technology/apple-google-ai-iphone.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare&amp;sgrp=c-cb" rel="external nofollow">report today</a> and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-18/apple-in-talks-to-license-google-gemini-for-iphone-ios-18-generative-ai-tools" rel="external nofollow">earlier reporting</a> from Bloomberg, it is in preliminary talks with <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=bloomberg+apple+gemini&amp;oq=bloomberg+apple+gemini&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRg9MgYIAhBFGDzSAQg1ODI1ajBqMagCALACAA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8" rel="external nofollow">Google about adding the search company’s Gemini AI model to iPhones</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Yet a <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.09611.pdf"}' data-offer-url="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.09611.pdf" href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.09611.pdf" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">research paper</a> quietly posted online last Friday by Apple engineers suggests that the company is making significant new investments into AI that are already bearing fruit. It details the development of a new generative AI model called MM1 capable of working with text and images. The researchers show it answering questions about photos and displaying the kind of general knowledge skills shown by chatbots like ChatGPT. The model’s name is not explained but could stand for MultiModal 1.<br>
	<br>
	MM1 appears to be similar in design and sophistication to a variety of recent AI models from other tech giants, including <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/metas-open-source-llama-upsets-the-ai-horse-race/" rel="external nofollow">Meta’s open source Llama 2</a> and <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/google-gemini-generative-ai-boom/" rel="external nofollow">Google’s Gemini</a>. Work by Apple’s rivals and academics shows that models of this type can be used to power capable chatbots or build “agents” that can solve tasks by writing code and taking actions such as using computer interfaces or websites. That suggests MM1 could yet find its way into Apple’s products.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“The fact that they’re doing this, it shows they have the ability to understand how to train and how to build these models,” says <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rsalakhu/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rsalakhu/" href="https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rsalakhu/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Ruslan Salakhutdinov</a>, a professor at Carnegie Mellon who led AI research at Apple several years ago. “It requires a certain amount of expertise.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	MM1 is a multimodal large language model, or MLLM, meaning it is trained on images as well as text. This allows the model to respond to text prompts and also answer complex questions about particular images.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One example in the Apple research paper shows what happened when MM1 was provided with a photo of a sun-dappled restaurant table with a couple of beer bottles and also an image of the menu. When asked how much someone would expect to pay for “all the beer on the table,” the model correctly reads off the correct price and tallies up the cost.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, it could only ingest and generate text, but more recently its creator OpenAI and others have worked to expand the underlying large language model technology to work with other kinds of data. When <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/google-gemini-ai-model-chatgpt/" rel="external nofollow">Google launched Gemini</a> (the model that now powers its <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/google-rebrands-ai-chatbot-gemini/" rel="external nofollow">answer to ChatGPT</a>) last December, the company <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/google-deepmind-demis-hassabis-gemini-ai/" rel="external nofollow">touted its multimodal nature</a> as beginning an important new direction in AI. “After the rise of LLMs, MLLMs are emerging as the next frontier in foundation models,” Apple’s paper says.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	MM1 is a relatively small model as measured by its number of “parameters,” or the internal variables that get adjusted as a model is trained. <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.bu.edu/cs/profiles/saenko/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.bu.edu/cs/profiles/saenko/" href="https://www.bu.edu/cs/profiles/saenko/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Kate Saenko</a>, a professor at Boston University who specializes in computer vision and machine learning, says this could make it easier for Apple’s engineers to experiment with different training methods and refinements before scaling up when they hit on something promising.
</p>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Saenko says the MM1 paper provides a surprising amount of detail on how the model was trained for a corporate publication. For instance, the engineers behind MM1 describe tricks for improving the performance of the model including increasing the resolution of images and mixing text and image data. Apple is famed for its secrecy, but it has <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/apple-open-artificial-intelligence-research/" rel="external nofollow">previously shown unusual openness about AI research</a> as it has sought to lure the talent needed to compete in the crucial technology.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Saenko says it’s hard to draw too many conclusions about Apple’s plans from the research paper. Multimodal models have proven adaptable to many different use cases. But she suggests that MM1 could perhaps be a step toward building “some type of multimodal assistant that can describe photos, documents, or charts and answer questions about them.”

Amazon and Google have said they are integrating LLM technology into their own assistants, Alexa and Google Assistant. Google allows users of Android phones to replace the Assistant with Gemini.<br>
	<br>
	Reports from <em>The</em> <em>New York Times</em> and <em>Bloomberg</em> that Apple may add Google’s Gemini to iPhones suggest Apple is considering expanding the strategy it has used for search on mobile devices to generative AI. Rather than develop web search technology in-house, the iPhone maker leans on Google, which reportedly pays <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/26/technology/google-apple-search-spotlight.html" rel="external nofollow">more than $18 billion</a> to make its search engine the iPhone default. Apple has also shown it can build its own alternatives to outside services, even when it starts from behind. Google Maps used to be the default on iPhones but <a href="https://www.wired.com/2012/06/with-google-gone-can-apple-successfuly-navigate-in-maps/" rel="external nofollow">in 2012 Apple replaced it with its own maps app</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple CEO Tim Cook has <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-shareholders-reject-ai-disclosure-proposal-2024-02-28/#:~:text=Cook%20said%20that%20the%20iPhone,%2C%20problem%20solving%20and%20more.%22" rel="external nofollow">promised investors</a> that the company will reveal more of its generative AI plans this year. The company faces pressure to keep up with rival smartphone makers, including Samsung and Google, that have introduced a raft of generative AI tools for their devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple could end up tapping both Google and its own, in-house AI, perhaps by introducing Gemini as a replacement for conventional Google Search while also building new generative AI tools on top of MM1 and other homegrown models. Last September, several of the researchers behind MM1 <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.17102"}' data-offer-url="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.17102" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.17102" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">published details of MGIE</a>, a tool that uses generative AI to manipulate images based on a text prompt.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Salakhutdinov believes his former employer may focus on developing LLMs that can be installed and run securely on Apple devices. That would fit with the company’s past emphasis on using <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/apple-ai-privacy/" rel="external nofollow">“on-device” algorithms</a> to safeguard sensitive data and avoid sharing it with other companies. A number of <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.08451"}' data-offer-url="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.08451" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.08451" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">recent</a> AI <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.03735"}' data-offer-url="https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.03735" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.03735" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">research</a> <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.11749"}' data-offer-url="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.11749" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.11749" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">papers</a> from Apple concern machine-learning methods designed to preserve user privacy. “I think that's probably what Apple is going to do,” he says.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When it comes to tailoring generative AI to devices, Salakhutdinov says, Apple may yet turn out to have a distinct advantage because of its control over the entire software-hardware stack. The company has included a <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/apples-neural-engine-infuses-the-iphone-with-ai-smarts/" rel="external nofollow">custom “neural engine”</a> in the chips that power its mobile devices since 2017, with the debut of the iPhone X. “Apple is definitely working in that space, and I think at some point they will be in the front, because they have phones, the distribution.”

<p>
	In a thread on X, Apple researcher Brandon McKinzie, lead author of the MM1 paper <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://twitter.com/mckbrando/status/1768658029246132441"}' data-offer-url="https://twitter.com/mckbrando/status/1768658029246132441" href="https://twitter.com/mckbrando/status/1768658029246132441" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">wrote</a>: “This is just the beginning. Almost two weeks ago, Bethesda released another update to <em>Starfield</em>, but only Steam users received it as <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/starfield-steam-beta-has-digipick-changes-photo-mode-upgrades-and-hundreds-of-bug-fixes/" rel="external nofollow">part of the beta channel</a>. Now, update <a href="https://bethesda.net/en/game/starfield/article/FkSH4RJ9HwfNU1M72Tl23/starfield-update-1-10-31-march-19-2024" rel="external nofollow">1.10.31 </a>has finally been deemed worthy enough to launch to all players across Xbox and PC platforms.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Aside from the almost 500 bugfixes (499!) included in this update, Bethesda is shipping some new features and changes too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of these is a major change to how Digipicks work, the lockpicking mechanic of the sci-fi RPG. After the update, there won't be a Digipick cost when undoing a move, which is a massive change, and should save quite a few tools in the mini-game. Photo mode also now lets players use expressions and poses on the player character and companions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There are also UI upgrades, like being able to hold a button (RB or Alt) inside the Starmap to show all names of the star systems on display. A popular glitch players used to gain space suits from tiny gaps in displays has unfortunately been fixed too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are all the features and bug fixes included in this update:

	Microsoft has announced the creation of a new division called "Microsoft AI." It will be led by Mustafa Suleyman, a DeepMind and Inflection co-founder.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mustafa Suleyman will work as the EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI and he will report directly to Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO. Karen Simonyan, another co-founder of Inflection, is joining the team as Chief Scientist, reporting to Mustafa. According to a post on the official Microsoft website, Mustafa and Karen "have designed, led, launched, and co-authored many of the most important contributions in advancing AI over the last five years."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As part of the transition, Mikhail Parakhin and his entire team, which includes Microsoft Edge, Copilot, and Bing, will move to the new division along with Misha Bilenko and the GenAI team. Both will report directly to Mustafa Suleyman.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Kevin Scott will remain CTO and EVP of AI, "responsible for all-up AI strategy." Also, Rajesh Jha is still EVP of Experience and Devices and will continue building Copilot for Microsoft 365 in partnership with Mustafa Suleyman.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Curiously, there is not a single word about the Windows division, which <a href="https://neow.in/ejg4MzI5" rel="external nofollow">recently received a new head following Panos Panay's departure from Microsoft</a>. Windows is scheduled to get <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-version-24h2-is-now-official-a-big-feature-update-coming-later-this-year/" rel="external nofollow">a big AI boost this year</a>, so it will be interesting to see its relation to the new Microsoft AI division. Although the blog post has not mentioned Windows 11, it is obvious that the company will only increase its investments in AI-powered experiences, and that will affect all of its consumer and commercial products.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Satya Nadella closed the announcement with the following:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		We have a real shot to build technology that was once thought impossible and that lives up to our mission to ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organization on the planet, safely and responsibly. I’m looking forward to doing so with you.
	</p>
</blockquote>

	Apple has phased out support for decade-old drivers in macOS, which is making life harder for the Hackintosh community. Has the hobby run its course with the introduction of Apple Silicon Macs?

		<p>
			For years, there’s been a dedicated community of tech tinkerers who’ve built unofficial “Macs” out of PC hardware or successfully <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/comments/1bhl521/sucess/" rel="external nofollow">gotten macOS running on a laptop</a> that ran Windows in a past life. But now, some of those enthusiasts believe the Hackintosh dream is becoming more and more untenable.

In a nutshell, macOS Sonoma removed support for many drivers that were found in Intel Macs a decade ago. Vacić says these drivers were “the key ingredient to many fully functional Hackintosh builds.” It’s still possible to cobble together a Hackintosh with the Sonoma OS, but you’ll have to be comfortable with some complex workarounds that might lessen your machine’s overall security. For now, the best advice is to remain on macOS Ventura, which won’t be a realistic solution forever.

	<div class="duet--article--article-body-component">

			One thing in particular about this blog stuck out to me: Vacić mentions that the Hackintosh scene really came into its own during a time when Apple was releasing some of its worst-conceived Macs that <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/4/21246223/macbook-keyboard-butterfly-magic-pro-apple-design" rel="external nofollow">prioritized form over function</a>. Yet, it wasn’t <em>that</em> long ago when it felt like the Mac was near the bottom of Apple’s priority list.

But as the steps to keep those machines running become more tedious — especially if you insist on using Apple’s latest software — people are inevitably going to get fatigued and not bother. <a href="https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39728351" rel="external nofollow">This comment</a> over at Hacker News sums up that frustration well: “these days I want to <em>use</em> the computer, not spend time trying to convince it to work.” Hackintoshes had their time and a worthy purpose, but it looks like that time is almost up.

	Google is now requiring people who create content on YouTube to label any content that was created by AI tools that are deemed as realistic. <a href="https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/disclosing-ai-generated-content/" rel="external nofollow">In a blog post today</a>, Google revealed that the new AI labeling features are now available as a tool in YouTube's Creator Studio. The company first announced its AI labeling plans <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-will-soon-add-labels-for-youtube-videos-when-they-contain-generative-ai-content/" rel="external nofollow">back in November 2023</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1710783798_image1_nznb99c.width-800.form" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="70.00" height="477" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/03/1710783798_image1_nznb99c.width-800.format-webp_story.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new tool is labeled as "Altered content" within the Creator Studio. It simply asks YouTube video makers to say "Yes" or 'No" if their video has one or more of the following bullet points:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			Makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn't say or do
		</li>
		<li>
			Alters footage of a real event or place
		</li>
		<li>
			Generates a realistic-looking scene that didn't actually occur
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The blog post states that YouTube creators don't have to label content made by generative AI tools that do not look realistic. One example was "someone riding a unicorn through a fantastical world." The same applies to the use of AI tools that simply make color or lighting changes to videos, along with effects like background blur and beauty video filters.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These new AI-based description labels will appear first on YouTube's phone apps, and will later expand to the desktop and TV apps. YouTube plans to use "enforcement measures" if a YouTube creator makes a habit of not correctly labeling their realistic AI videos but does not state what they will be like (video removal, demonetization, or suspending an entire account). YouTube also reserves the right to put that label on videos themselves if they have "the potential to confuse or mislead people."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google is also working on a process for YouTube views to send anonymous alerts to YouTube if a video is using realistic-looking AI-made content.
</p>

	We have not heard a lot about the Amazon Luna cloud gaming service lately. Luna was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amazon-announces-new-cloud-gaming-service-called-luna/" rel="external nofollow">first announced in 2020</a>, and officially launched in 2022, but it has not received as much attention compared to Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming or Nvidia GeForce NOW.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, things might be changing for the better for Amazon Luna fans. In a <a href="https://www.gog.com/blog/more-ways-to-play-your-gog-games-were-teaming-up-with-luna-cloud-streaming-service/" rel="external nofollow">blog post today</a>, the DRM-free PC digital game store GoG.com announced that its library of games will soon be accessible via Amazon Luna on multiple devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The blog post stated:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		On Luna you’ll be able to play every game that you already own on GOG (and that is also available on Luna). There’s absolutely no requirement to purchase anything twice – you bought it once on our platform so it’s always yours, as always.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	People can also purchase GoG.com games via Luna, and they will then also become available on their GOG Galaxy PC client as well for offline play. Features like cloud saves and achievements will also be available via Luna for any GoG.com-purchased game
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some GoG.com games are already available to play on the Nvidia GeForce NOW cloud gaming service. However, this announcement for support for Amazon Luna sounds like a much bigger expansion into cloud gaming for GoG.com. The blog post did not offer any info on when this new support for Luna will begin.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Amazon Luna is available for residents in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Luna apps are available on Amazon Fire TV-based smart televisions, along with some Samsung and LG smart TVs. It is also available for Amazon Fire tables, and it can be accessed via web browsers for PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Chromebook devices. While some games on the service are available to play for free, an Amazon Plus subscription costs $9.99 a month so you can play more titles.

	The analyst company Canalys has forecasted that AI-capable PCs will make up 40% of PC shipments in 2025, up from 18% in 2024. There are expected to be 48 million shipments this year, and, in 2025, the figure could go past 100 million.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another prediction that Canalys has made is that in 2028, there could be 205 million AI-capable PCs shipped. This would represent a “staggering” compound annual growth rate of 44% between 2024 and 2028.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When talking about AI-capable PCs, Canalys is referring to computers with dedicated AI accelerators like Neural Processing Units (NPUs), which are capable of performing AI workloads on-device instead of relying on the cloud.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Providing comment, Ishan Dutt, Principal Analyst at Canalys, said:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		“The wider availability of AI-accelerating silicon in personal computing will be transformative, leading to over 150 million AI-capable PCs shipping through to the end of 2025. PCs with dedicated on-device AI capabilities will enable new and improved user experiences, driving productivity gains and personalizing devices at scale while offering better power efficiency, stronger security and reduced costs associated with running AI workloads. This emerging PC category opens new frontiers for both software developers and hardware vendors to innovate and deliver compelling use cases to customers across consumer, commercial and education scenarios.”
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	These AI-capable PCs are expected to include a 10-15% price premium. By the end of 2025, more than half of PCs priced at $800 or more will ship with these AI features. This share will increase to more than 80% by 2028.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It’s still early days for on-board AI functionality but we can imagine that these chips could be leveraged to summarize documents, recognize text on screenshots, help generate images, and more. Having AI capabilities could be something that customers look out for next to other considerations such as RAM and disk space.
