	Motherboard makers "disable thermal and power delivery safeguards" by default.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Earlier this month, we <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/intel-is-investigating-game-crashes-on-top-end-core-i9-desktop-cpus/" rel="external nofollow">wrote</a> that some of Intel's recent high-end Core i9 and Core i7 processors had been crashing and exhibiting other weird issues in some games and that Intel was investigating the cause.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		An Intel statement <a href="https://www.igorslab.de/en/intel-releases-the-13th-and-14th-generation-k-sku-processor-instability-issue-update/" rel="external nofollow">obtained by Igor's Lab</a> suggests that Intel's investigation is wrapping up, and the company is pointing squarely in the direction of enthusiast motherboard makers that are turning up power limits and disabling safeguards to try to wring a little more performance out of the processors.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		"While the root cause has not yet been identified, Intel has observed the majority of reports of this issue are from users with unlocked/overclock capable motherboards," the statement reads. "Intel has observed 600/700 Series chipset boards often set BIOS defaults to disable thermal and power delivery safeguards designed to limit processor exposure to sustained periods of high voltage and frequency."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		These are the specific settings that Intel believes are causing problems:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
		<ul>
			<li>
				Disabling Current Excursion Protection (CEP)
			</li>
			<li>
				Enabling the IccMax Unlimited bit
			</li>
			<li>
				Disabling Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) and/or Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost (eTVB)
			</li>
			<li>
				Additional settings which may increase the risk of system instability:
			</li>
			<li>
				Disabling C-states
			</li>
			<li>
				Using Windows Ultimate Performance mode
			</li>
			<li>
				Increasing PL1 and PL2 beyond Intel recommended limits.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</blockquote>

	<p>
		Intel's statement recommends that motherboard makers release BIOS updates that use Intel's recommended defaults for these settings. The company is planning to release a public statement about its investigation—along with specific recommended BIOS settings—sometime in May 2024.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		As we reported previously, the problems primarily affect high-end unlocked Core i9 CPUs like the i9-13900K and i9-14900K, as well as KF and KS variants of the same processors. Some reports suggest that the i7-13700K and i7-14700K have also been having issues.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		These chips are faster variants of Intel's 12th-generation Alder Lake processors with more cores and faster clock speeds, all built on the same Intel 7 manufacturing process. Intel releases these K-series chips to satisfy overclockers and tinkerers, but it's clear that there just isn't a lot of performance headroom left in these chips since Intel is already pushing their clock speeds and voltages to squeeze out generational performance improvements.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We've asked Intel to confirm whether the statement obtained by Igor's Lab is genuine. If it is, we should know more about the company's recommendations for safe power settings sometime next month, and we'll hopefully see new BIOS releases from the motherboard manufacturers that reinstate some of Intel's safeguards for these high-end chips.
	</p>

<p>

<p>
	The immense success Microsoft currently enjoys is often attributed to the company's early lead and investment in AI coupled with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsofts-ceo-satya-nadella-says-empathy-is-the-hardest-skill-to-learn" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsofts-ceo-satya-nadella-says-empathy-is-the-hardest-skill-to-learn" rel="external nofollow">Satya Nadella's impeccable leadership skills</a>. But as it turns out, there's more to the story than Microsoft lets on.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To the public eye, Microsoft co-founder and former <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/bill-gates-leaves-microsofts-board-directors-will-focus-philanthropic-efforts" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/bill-gates-leaves-microsofts-board-directors-will-focus-philanthropic-efforts" rel="external nofollow">Bill Gates left the firm's board of directors to focus more on his philanthropic efforts</a> at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. </p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Per sources familiar with the matter, Bill Gates is still 'intimately' involved in Microsoft's operations and strategies and is often a part of the recruitment of high-ranking executives at the firm, reviews new products, and more. More importantly, Gates' contributions have heavily impacted Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI, however <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-partnership-with-openai-raises-concern-among-insiders" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-partnership-with-openai-raises-concern-among-insiders" rel="external nofollow">complicated</a> it might be.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to one of Microsoft's top executives:
</p>

<p class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<em>"What you read is not what's happening in reality. Satya and the entire senior leadership team lean on Gates very significantly. His opinion is sought every time we make a major change."</em>
</p>

<p>
	Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took over the company's leadership from Steve Ballmer but had been working there since 1992. Satya started his <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/viral-post-poignantly-shares-satya-nadellas-humble-beginnings-as-an-excel-product-demonstrator-at-microsoft-to-now-running-the-entire-company" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/viral-post-poignantly-shares-satya-nadellas-humble-beginnings-as-an-excel-product-demonstrator-at-microsoft-to-now-running-the-entire-company" rel="external nofollow">humble beginnings at Microsoft</a> as an Excel product demonstrator. He quickly climbed the ranks at the company and ultimately rose to the top seat but saw himself as an "internal stranger" and even admitted that he never thought "someday Microsoft would have neither Bill nor Steve."

<p>
	Upon his appointment as CEO, Satya often turned to Gates for advice. He reportedly asked Gates to set aside 30% of his time to serve as a technical advisor for Microsoft. Satya and Gate's professional relationship continued to thrive beyond the latter's departure from the company's board in 2020.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	During Gates' departure from the company, Satya praised him for his contributions and promised that the company would continue to profit from his technical advice and passion. But this tone quickly changed in 2021 while Gates and Melinda were in divorce proceedings. At the time, Gates had reportedly been forced to step down from the company for having an affair with an employee. The situation worsened when several female employees highlighted Gates' misconduct, including asking them out. It is at this juncture that Satya seemingly distanced himself from Gates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's relationship with Bill Gates seemed broken, this wasn't the case. It's reported that Satya continued to rely on Gates for his technical advice and knowledge, which has heavily impacted the company's direction and AI advances.

	Gates is also rumored to have challenged OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, to create an LLM with the capability of passing an advanced Biology test. At the time, Gates didn't believe it was possible, but it was indeed. Interestingly, OpenAI's Sam Altman debuted GPT-4 outside Gates' residence in 2022 where he'd been having dinner with the billionaire and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Before Microsoft and OpenAI forged their tech bromance, Bill Gates shared an internal memo with Satya Nadella alongside top executives at the company. While vague, it talks about "AI agents" designed to help satisfy your wants and needs, but are more powerful than your basic voice assistant.

	After Altman debuted GPT-4, Gates shared another memo highlighting several ways the technology should be leveraged to make work easier, including reading and summarizing your emails and more. Gates believed that the model trained using the information on the internet was the beginning of a new era with personal AI agents.
</p>

<p>

	Sources with close affiliations to Microsoft detailed Gates' words and advice were treated as the gospel. Consequently, Satya Nadella challenged his team to integrate AI across its wide portfolio of products and services, including cybersecurity, Microsoft 365, etc.

	Microsoft spread its AI glory to its seemingly dead search engine, Bing, ultimately placing it on an even playing field to potentially compete with Google. Thus far, Nintendo has <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/06/will-nintendos-switch-successor-be-backward-compatible/" rel="external nofollow">offered only vague hints</a> regarding whether or not the upcoming Switch 2 will run games and software designed for the current Switch. Now, an obscure Chinese peripheral maker is reporting that the new console will indeed work with existing physical Switch game cards and digital Switch game downloads.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
	The new report comes from <a href="https://www.mobapad.com/" rel="external nofollow">MobaPad</a>, a little-known creator of Switch controllers and carrying cases based in Shenzen, China. In <a href="https://www.mobapad.com/blogs/the-latest-scoop-on-nintendo-switch-2/the-latest-scoop-on-nintendo-switch-2" rel="external nofollow">a Sunday morning blog post</a>, the company says it is "in the process of developing the next-generation console controller" for the Switch 2 and has "acquired a lot of first-hand information" about the console as a result (MobaPad shared similar insights days earlier on <a href="https://www-bilibili-com.translate.goog/opus/925030436838572049?_x_tr_sl=auto&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp" rel="external nofollow">Chinese video site Bilibili</a> and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/1ceajbf/switch_2_switch_attach_details_leaked_by_3rd/" rel="external nofollow">briefly on its English Facebook page</a>).

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Chief among MobaPad's purported revelations is that "the cartridge slot of the Switch 2 will support backward compatibility with physical Switch game cartridges, ensuring compatibility with players' existing game libraries, including digital versions." Game cards designed specifically for the Switch 2, on the other hand, "may not be compatible with the first-generation console," suggesting there may be a physical change preventing Switch 2 game cards from being accidentally inserted into an older Switch console.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Play it forward
	</h2>

	<p>
		Earlier this year, a Brazilian podcast <a href="https://www.eurogamer.net/nintendo-switch-2-will-be-backwards-compatible-leak-claims" rel="external nofollow">suggested</a> that the Switch 2 would offer full backward compatibility with the current Switch library. But this is the first time we've gotten similar information directly from a company claiming first-hand knowledge of the Switch 2's design from Nintendo itself.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="switchgames.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="540" width="612" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/switchgames.jpg">

	<div>
		<em>It would be a shame if all those Switch game cards didn't work on your next Nintendo console.</em>
	</div>

	<div>
		<em>Jingdu / Amazon</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Bringing forward support for <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/02/fewer-and-fewer-console-games-are-seeing-a-physical-release/" rel="external nofollow">thousands of existing Switch games</a> would definitely be a boon for the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/02/nintendo-switch-crosses-100-million-mark-outsells-wii-ps1/" rel="external nofollow">tens of millions</a> of Switch owners who might be looking to upgrade to a new, more powerful Nintendo console soon. But direct competition from earlier games could be seen as limiting for Switch 2 game developers—in November 2022, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto <a href="https://www.ign.com/articles/nintendos-shigeru-miyamoto-says-backwards-compatibility-is-easier-than-ever-before" rel="external nofollow">noted</a> that "Nintendo's strength is in our creation of new entertainment, so when we release new hardware going forward, we plan to continue to offer new and unique gameplay that cannot be realized on existing hardware."
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Historically, Nintendo's portable consoles have offered backward compatibility with software designed for the previous generation of outgoing portable hardware, in a chain dating back to the original Game Boy. The Wii and Wii U extended this tradition to home consoles before the Switch's hybrid, disc-free design marked a hard break in software compatibility.
	</p>

	<h2>
		More buttons?
	</h2>

	<p>
		Elsewhere in its report, MobaPad suggests that the new Switch 2 Joy-Cons will have a few additional buttons compared to the Switch's standard controllers. One set of new inputs will be on the rear of each Joy-Con, just below the ZL or ZR button. Another "additional function button" reportedly sits below the Home button on the right Joy-Con, MobaPad says, though it's unclear what system or gameplay function this button might serve.

	MobPad's report also echoes a recent report from Spanish-language news site Vandal, which suggested that the new console would have <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024/04/report-switch-2-joy-cons-will-attach-via-magnets/" rel="external nofollow">Joy-Cons that attach to the system magnetically</a> (Vandal's report cited "several manufacturers of accessories and peripherals for the Nintendo console," which might have also included MobaPad). MobaPad says the new Joy-Cons will feature metal SL and SR buttons (the ones along the slide-in rail on the Switch Joy-Cons) to help facilitate this "electromagnetic suction technology."

	<p>
		Elsewhere in its post, MobaPad corroborates earlier reports saying that <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024/01/analyst-switch-2-will-have-a-massive-8-inch-lcd-screen/" rel="external nofollow">the Switch 2 will have an 8-inch screen</a>, which MobaPad says will support 1080p resolutions in portable mode. MobaPad also echoes earlier reports in saying that the new console can <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/09/nintendo-reportedly-showing-devs-switch-2-with-upscaled-breath-of-the-wild/" rel="external nofollow">deliver upscaled 4K graphics</a> while docked to a TV.

		The still-unannounced Switch 2 is now <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024/02/multiple-reports-suggest-early-2025-launch-for-switch-2/" rel="external nofollow">widely expected to see release in early 2025</a>, reportedly to give developers more time to craft launch software. But if peripheral makers are getting detailed looks at the system this early, the actual hardware might be going to production well before that rumored launch window.

<p>
	This Microsoft Weekly starts with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-made-619-billion-in-revenue-for-fiscal-q3-2024-up-17-percent-from-a-year-ago/" rel="external nofollow">the latest financial report from Microsoft</a>. On April 26, the company announced its earnings, revealing $61.9 billion in revenue and $21.9 billion in net income. Most of the company's divisions reported double-digit growth.

		Here we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And of course, you may find a word or two about older but still supported versions.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The April 2024 non-security updates for Windows 10 and 11 are now available. Windows 10 received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-22h2-non-security-preview-update-kb5036979-adds-microsoft-account-notifications/" rel="external nofollow">KB5036979</a>, and Windows 11 got <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-22h2-and-23h2-get-kb5036980-non-security-preview-updates-with-start-menu-changes/" rel="external nofollow">KB5036980</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Those non-security updates contain one thing that will most likely upset many Windows 11 users: The company is now stuffing the Start menu with app ads. Fortunately, you can turn them off. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-rolls-out-start-menu-ads-to-all-windows-11-users-here-is-how-to-turn-them-off/" rel="external nofollow">This short guide</a> provides more insight into that. Also, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-seemingly-admits-ads-on-windows-11-start-menu-are-in-the-works/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 should soon become more clear about ads</a> across its parts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On the bride side, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-22h2-updates-will-now-have-a-much-smaller-download-size/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10 updates are now significantly smaller in size</a>. Microsoft implemented some of Windows 11's practices in its previous-gen operating systems, resulting in a notable decrease of hundreds of megabytes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This week, NTDEV, the maker of Tiny11, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/new-version-of-tiny11-builder-lets-you-debloat-any-windows-11-build-or-version/" rel="external nofollow">released a new version of Tiny11 Builder</a>, a script that uses official Microsoft-made tools to debloat any Windows 11 build or edition. You can now make your own Tiny11 without risking using modified Windows images.

<p>
	Microsoft announced <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-now-lets-you-download-app-executables-directly-from-the-microsoft-store-website/" rel="external nofollow">some big changes on the Microsoft Store website</a>. Now, users can download app executables directly from the website with fewer clicks. Microsoft says that the new system is faster, allows installing apps on systems without the Microsoft Store, and downloading several apps side-by-side.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you recently purchased a Windows 11 and are now wondering if it qualifies as an "AI-enabled" one, Dell has the answers you need. The company published <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/dell-explains-how-to-check-if-your-windows-11-computer-is-ai-enabled/" rel="external nofollow">a support page with detailed explanations</a> of what makes a Windows computer "AI-enabled."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The upcoming Surface Pro 10 should be one such "AI-enabled" computer. We are less than one month away from the public announcement, and benchmark <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/early-geekbench-tests-show-possible-specs-of-surface-pro-10-with-the-snapdragon-x-plus-chip/" rel="external nofollow">leaks are already spoiling the show</a>. A test on Geekbnch revealed a Surface Pro 10 configuration with the Snapdragon X Plus chip and 16GB of RAM.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Shortly after that, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/qualcomm-unveils-snapdragon-x-plus-for-windows-11-arm-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon X Plus</a>, a new, more affordable SKU in its upcoming lineup. It features 10 Cryo cores operating at up to 4.3GHz and a GPU capable of delivering up to 3.8TFLOPs. However, that is not everything Qualcomm has in store. A new report emerged about the company planning to release <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/qualcomm-plans-more-snapdragon-x-chips-including-80-core-dual-cpu-server-variants/" rel="external nofollow">even more versions, including 80-core server processors</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	All those Snapdragon processors should enable the new AI Explorer, which will be available in Windows 11 later this year. Just short of one month before the official announcement, a new report revealed <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/more-details-about-ai-explorer-in-windows-11-emerge-ahead-of-public-announcement/" rel="external nofollow">more details about the feature</a>.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But that is not all. Edge 124 received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-rolls-back-mistakenly-released-copilot-app-on-windows-server-in-latest-edge-update/" rel="external nofollow">a much-needed update</a>, which reverted the recently released (allegedly by mistake) Copilot app on Windows Server SKUs. Apple's <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-let-loose-ipad-event-for-may-7-2024/" rel="external nofollow">upcoming "Let Loose" event</a> promises major upgrades to the iPad Pro line and a renewed focus on artificial intelligence (AI). According to Mark Gurman, the new iPad Pro launching next week will feature an OLED display and Apple's next-generation M4 chip instead of the M3.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While previous speculation <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/new-report-has-set-a-may-release-time-frame-for-new-apple-ipad-pro-and-air-models/" rel="external nofollow">pointed to the M3 chip</a>, Gurman reports that Apple is already opting for its next major silicon update. The M4 is said to position the iPad Pro as Apple's first "truly AI-powered device." Gurman believes that every new Apple product going forward will have advanced AI capabilities built around upcoming chips.
</p>

<p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		I’m hearing there is a strong possibility that the chip in the new iPad Pro will be the M4, not the M3. Better yet, I believe Apple will position the tablet as its first truly AI-powered device — and that it will tout each new product from then on as an AI device. This, of course, is all in response to the AI craze that has swept the tech industry over the last couple years.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	This lines up with rumors of Apple <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-in-talks-with-openai-to-bring-ai-features-to-the-iphone/" rel="external nofollow">exploring AI partnerships</a> and new software features like personalized <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-first-set-of-apples-ai-features-on-ios-18-may-run-locally-on-your-iphone/" rel="external nofollow">recommendations and translations coming in iOS 18</a>. By introducing an M4-powered iPad Pro first, Apple can lay out its vision for embedding AI across hardware and software before developers at<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-will-host-wwdc-24-on-june-10-14/" rel="external nofollow"> WWDC 2024</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition to M4 chip and OLED screens, the new iPad Pro could enable machine learning tools for content creators, designers, and more. The upgraded tablets are also expected to support the latest generation Apple Pencil, which could introduce haptic feedback for the first time to simulate the feel of writing on paper.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Expectations for new iPads have been at a high ever since there was no event in October 2023. There are expected to be <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-launches-second-beta-for-ios-175-macos-145-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">four iPad models announced at this event</a>, which would be two new iPad Pro devices and two new iPad Air devices.

	Hoping to make life easier, I tested six AI-powered tools meant to help me write better and work smarter.
</h3>

<p>
	I eagerly refreshed the website, awaiting my brand-new headshots. When they finally appeared, I squinted, bewildered. I laughed out loud alone in my office, then sent a very confused email to customer support.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Every writer I know is talking about AI tools and whether they’re ethical to use. But what’s just as interesting to me is why we’re so enamored with them even if they produce outrageous or below-average results. Why do we chase the shiny new thing even if it’s not better, faster, or cheaper?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This year my LinkedIn feed has been full of posts touting the best new AI tools for doing absolutely everything, and I’ve already fallen for too many of them. I didn’t really ask myself until months later why, all of a sudden, I’m trying so hard to be one of the cool kids. Major FOMO led to me conveniently ignoring whether these tools were actually helpful.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the first ones that caught my eye was <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.aragon.ai/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.aragon.ai/" href="https://www.aragon.ai/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Aragon</a>, a service that promises to generate professional, AI-generated headshots after uploading a few selfies. Up until then, I'd been using a picture of me jumping on a rainbow bouncy house as the hero image on my website, and a vacation snapshot as my profile photo.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Professional photographers are expensive and photoshoots are time-consuming. Aragon promised I could skip the logistical nightmare of setting up a photoshoot, finding an outfit, getting my hair done, and spending hours at a potentially awkward photoshoot that would cost hundreds of dollars and deliver images weeks later. Why not pay $39, upload a few selfies, and get 40 “professional” headshots in less than two hours?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad--in-content">
	<div class="ad__slot ad__slot--in-content" data-node-id="kohre">

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	After paying the fee and uploading selfies from different angles, I had to describe what I was looking for. I asked for a variety of images outside and inside, casual wear, and no cleavage. Some of the results were truly disturbing. Aragon gave me Instagram face in every single shot. “No cleavage” resulted in images of me wearing a “business casual” crop top with porn boobs, plastic doll teeth, and dinosaur claws. Some were plain ridiculous, like one of “me” sitting on a purse in a driveway, my pantsless legs melting together. Not even the ones that sort of looked like me <em>actually</em> looked like me. Aragon pretended I looked like a model, was 15 years younger, and definitely a hat person.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div>
	<div aria-hidden="true" class="ConsumerMarketingUnitThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut consumer-marketing-unit consumer-marketing-unit--article-mid-content" role="presentation">

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	If you’ve ever been on a first date with someone who looks nothing like their dating app pictures, you know why people use this tool. We all want to pretend we’re more attractive than we are. Because so many of us are buying into the same lie, we start reinforcing it with each other. Hey, I won’t point out my surprise at the fact that your skin has pores in real life, if you don’t mention my digital nose job.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I’d found Aragon on one of those “173 gazillion best new AI tools you must try out TODAY” LinkedIn lists, and even though that experiment turned out to be a disaster, I continued down the list, making other people money with their affiliate links.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.adcreative.ai/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.adcreative.ai/" href="https://www.adcreative.ai/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">AdCreativeAI</a> piqued my interest next because it offered beautifully designed ads and social posts in seconds. Just add your logo, text, and image, and the “#1 most used AI tool for advertising” would spit out hundreds of creative designs that promised to “outperform [my] competitors.” Tesla, Amazon, Starbucks, and Microsoft supposedly used this tool. So I signed up for a free trial, used it a few times, then got charged the hefty, regular monthly subscription fee of $200. Once I uploaded my logo, I chose brand colors and fonts, then picked a format, images, and copy (with the option to let AI generate the text). The output is ranked by predicted “engagement score,” which supposedly impacts the conversion rate. I have no clue how AdCreativeAI calculates these scores.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Up until then, I’d used <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.canva.com/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.canva.com/" href="https://www.canva.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Canva</a> to design marketing collateral (and by design, I mean pick a template and plug in new text.) Any user can upload designs to Canva and sometimes they’re … not great. Since I’m not a designer, I can’t always tell the good from the bad. AdCreativeAI promised to take the guesswork out of it for me.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I created several different AdCreativeAI ads for a writing guide nobody bought. Maybe the offer wasn’t that interesting, or maybe it was the design. I’ll never know, because I wasn’t posting on social media or emailing my (nonexisting) list or paying for Facebook ads. Turns out, buying an expensive ad creation tool does nothing when you don’t actually run ads. Aside from that, I noticed that while there were a lot of options, the ones consistently marked with the highest potential “engagement score” were the same 10 to 20 designs, all of which got boring quickly. Finally, there was no way to resize logos or adjust images manually.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I never used AdCreativeAI enough to justify the high monthly expense, so I kept Canva instead, which, at $12/month, is a fraction of the cost. I didn’t save time between choosing a design template and plugging in my information (Canva), or feeding my information into a tool first to spit out options for me to review and pick my favorite (AdCreativeAI). Canva now offers Magic Studio, their version of AI-powered text-to-image, text-to-video, magic animate, and magic switch (for automatically changing the size and format of designs).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The most important thing I learned, though, was that the shiny tools made me believe I needed them to create something I didn’t want to create in the first place. I don’t want to sell courses and webinars. I don’t care about creating ads or engaging on social media. I’m not a bite-size person. I’m a “meandering-conversation-while-lingering-around-the-kitchen-table-after-dinner” kind of person. Plus, I’m a slow writer, so it takes a lot of effort for me to write an article. I’m cool with it taking time and effort to read, too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What I do need for these long-form articles are great images. I relied heavily on <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.pexels.com/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.pexels.com/" href="https://www.pexels.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Pexels</a>, <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://pixabay.com/"}' data-offer-url="https://pixabay.com/" href="https://pixabay.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Pixabay</a>, and <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://unsplash.com/"}' data-offer-url="https://unsplash.com/" href="https://unsplash.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Unsplash</a> before I learned about <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.midjourney.com/"}' data-offer-url="https://www.midjourney.com/" href="https://www.midjourney.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Midjourney</a> from an AI-obsessed client who’d asked me to write a series of blog posts about the intersection of technology and art. She gave me a short tutorial on how to use this text-to-image generator by using specific prompts and sent me on my way … down a rabbit hole. Three hours later, I emerged bleary-eyed, having generated exactly zero images for her blog posts. Instead, I’d created random psychedelic fairy kingdoms, hyperrealistic characters for novels I’d never write, and album covers for nonexisting bands.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I’ve used only one image that I created with Midjourney, for a blog post. It was a fun process, but the image itself is low quality and has random elements that make no sense. With Midjourney, you get four square images as output and can ask to regenerate different versions of each of them. I got frustrated thinking that I couldn’t make a small change to an image I otherwise liked, or that Midjourney seemed to generate only square images, which is not what I needed for blog posts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I found out later that adding image dimensions to the prompt creates nonsquare images, and when doing research for this article I learned that Midjourney released Inpainting at the end of August 2023, allowing you to select parts of the image and edit them separately. This is what happens when non-techy people use tech; I can’t fault AI for that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The most controversial subscription I’m happy to pay for is <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/chatgpt-plus-web-browsing-openai/" rel="external nofollow">ChatGPT+, for $20 a month</a>. ChatGPT recently crossed the 100 million active user mark, and has completely transformed the AI landscape. I’m surprised how many writers publicly deride ChatGPT, while almost every writer I know uses it—just not for writing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By definition, you can’t use ChatGPT for truly creative work, because its output is “based on existing data and programmed algorithms.” It can only summarize, distill, copy, and paste. I use it to learn the basics about concepts, devices, time periods, or events that I write about, and use that basic explanation as a starting point for research. I use ChatGPT to find synonyms and alternatives to whole phrases. I can narrow down research studies and articles quickly because I can search with highly specific prompts rather than simple keywords or terms. Unfortunately, ChatGPT’s knowledge data isn’t up-to-date, so it won’t find the most recent studies. I love it for brainstorming titles, and chapter and section headings. It’s also great for checking title case and correct citation formatting. In other words, ChatGPT is my one-stop assistant instead of toggling between Google, my thesaurus, research database, and CMOS formatting tool.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As a ghostwriter, I regularly record interviews with authors to collect book content, so I started using <a class="external-link" data-event-click='{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"http://www.otter.ai"}' data-offer-url="http://www.otter.ai" href="http://www.otter.ai" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Otter.ai</a> to transcribe these calls. The transcripts are generally good, but the tech is glitchy, keeps signing in and out, and transcribes only up to 90 minutes at a time, even with a paid version. Worse, Otter joins your meetings even if you don’t. This is the default setting, and even when you disable it, the function still sometimes glitches and leads to the Otter assistant showing up uninvited. The default setting also allows the platform to email everyone in the meeting the transcript and invite them to start a free trial, which has weirded out some of my clients. I’m still looking for the perfect automated tool that records video and audio separately and provides a transcript without being creepy AF.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	My initial FOMO ended up costing me quite a bit of time and money, but gave me some clarity, too. Turns out that while I’d like to sit at the cool table, I do care more about looking like me than looking poreless. I trust my own voice over ChatGPT’s edits, and you should too. Not everything has to be captured, <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/the-case-for-using-ai-to-log-your-every-living-moment/?mbid=social_twitter&amp;utm_brand=wired&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_social-type=owned&amp;utm_medium=social" rel="external nofollow">as the CEO of Otter argues</a>. In fact, it’s the ephemeral nature of undocumented moments that makes me feel most alive. But that doesn’t mean I’ll get tired of learning about the newest AI tool promising the closest thing to magic I’ve ever seen.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So, here’s my super official ranking of all the tools I’ve used so far:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol class="paywall">
	<li>
		Most ridiculous: <strong>Aragon.AI</strong> for headshots
	</li>
	<li>
		Most expensive: <strong>AdCreativeAI</strong> for ads and social posts
	</li>
	<li>
		Most value: <strong>Canva</strong> for designing anything
	</li>
	<li>
		Most work to get good outputs: <strong>Midjourney</strong>
	</li>
	<li>
		Most glitchy and frustrating: <strong>Otter.AI</strong>
	</li>
	<li>
		Most consistent use: <strong>ChatGPT</strong>
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After I put the vacation snapshot back up as my profile picture, I called the friend who always has an eye for my best angles while capturing my most recognizable facial expressions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Turns out, yes, she’s for hire as a photographer.

To no one's surprise, that's exactly what happened with <em>Manor Lords</em>.

	The historical city-builder game, and the creation of one person, Greg Styczeń, has shot up to the <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/topselling/US" rel="external nofollow">top of the Steam sales chart</a>s when it was released as an Early Access title.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, the game has a ton of <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed" rel="external nofollow">concurrent Steam users at the moment</a>. It reached its current peak of 170,082 online players at once earlier today. That number could go even higher over the rest of the weekend.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Manor Lords</em> is also at the top of the sales charts at the <a href="https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/collection/top-sellers" rel="external nofollow">Epic Games Store</a>. and is at <a href="https://www.gog.com/en/games" rel="external nofollow">number two currently on GoG.com</a> after being on top earlier this weekend. The game is also available at no additional cost for Microsoft's PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. <p>
	Hooded Horse has set the price for <em>Manor Lords</em> at $39.99, but it is currently available for a couple of weeks at a discount of $29.99. <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/1363080/Manor_Lords/" rel="external nofollow">In a post on Steam</a>, the CEO of Hooded Horse, Tim Bender, discussed the price of the game:

<p>
	Styczeń also posted on the <a href="https://twitter.com/LordsManor/status/1772089270871765308" rel="external nofollow">Manor Lords X (formerly Twitter)</a> account back in March that he and Hooded Horse would begin to work on an Xbox console version of the game "as soon as possible."

	In October 2023, developer Mojang first announced plans for a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-next-big-minecraft-update-will-add-automated-crafting-new-underground-settings-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">new free update for its hit sandbox game <em>Minecraft</em></a>. It was labeled by version number 1.21, and today, Mojang announced that its final and official name will be Tricky Trials.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/1-21-update-officially-named-tricky-trials" rel="external nofollow">In a blog post</a> and an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONs7kTlqGw4" rel="external nofollow">accompanying YouTube video</a>, Mojang says the name comes from one of the update's features, the new trial chambers. These will be procedurally generated underground chambers where players will face "tricky" challenges. There will also be a new mob creature, the tornado-like Breeze.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">
	<div>
		<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="113" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/ONs7kTlqGw4?feature=oembed" title="THE 1.21 UPDATE OFFICIAL NAME IS... | MINECRAFT MONTHLY" width="200"></iframe>
	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Along with the trial chambers and the new Breeze mob, the Tricky Trials update's biggest feature is the Crafter, which will add automatic crafting to <em>Minecraft</em>. Another new feature is the Copper Bulb, which can create light but can also dim over time due to oxidation. Another new mob, the skeleton-like creature known as the bogged, will also be a part of the update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mojang has not announced when the Tricky Trials update will become available for Minecraft gamers, but these updates are usually released sometime in the middle part of the year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mojang has already officially released another free update, called <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/mojang-delivers-armadillos-eight-wolf-variations-wolf-armor-and-more-to-minecraft/" rel="external nofollow">Armored Paws</a>, earlier this week. The 1.20.5 update adds the new passive mob, the armadillo, to the game. There are also eight wolf variants included in that update, along with the new Wolf Armor.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mojang also made some changes and improvements <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/mojang-adds-extra-render-distance-new-social-hub-and-more-to-minecraft-realms-plus/" rel="external nofollow">to its Realms Plus serve</a>r hosting subscription service this week. They include the addition of Realm Stories, a social networking feature where players can share <em>Minecraft</em> screenshots with each other, chat about their in-game adventures, and more. Realms Plus also now has drops of Character Creator in-game items every month. Finally, you can sign into a Realms Plus <em>Minecraft</em> server and get "eight extra chunks" of render distance in your games.
</p>

	On Thursday, Bethesda Game Studios and its owner Microsoft released <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/fallout-4-next-gen-update-is-live-with-new-render-modes-creation-club-content-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">the "next-gen" update for its post-apocalypse RPG <em>Fallout 4</em></a>. Among other things, it added native support for Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S and Sony's PlayStation 5 consoles, along with widescreen and ultra-widescreen display support for PC gamers and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unfortunately, it appears the update also comes with its share of bugs and other issues. The Xbox Series X and S update was supposed to add two different graphical modes; Quality Mode, (30FPS at 4K resolution with Ultra graphics settings) and Performance Mode (60FPS at 4K resolution with standard graphics settings).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, <a href="https://www.eurogamer.net/fallout-4-upgrade-launches-to-mixed-response-with-broken-mods-and-bugged-xbox-quality-mode" rel="external nofollow">Eurogamer</a> reports that the Xbox Series X|S update currently only has support for the Performance Mode. Attempts to run the game in Quality Mode do not work at the moment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The PC update, as expected, has caused a number of popular third-party mods for the game to break. If you play the PC version of <em>Fallout 4</em> with one or more mods, you can head over to the<a href="https://forums.nexusmods.com/topic/13480381-how-to-stop-fallout-4-from-updating-steamgogxbox/" rel="external nofollow"> NexusMods forums</a>, where you can learn how to keep the update from being installed on your PC with Steam, GoG.com, and PC Game Pass.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This update was also supposed to make the game verified for Valve's Steam Deck portable gaming PC. While that does indeed happen, the update has also done away with the game's launcher, which let users customize their graphics. The launch command of "SteamDeck=0 %command%" will restore the game launcher.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, PlayStation owners who have the game as part of their PlayStation Plus Extra subscription currently cannot get the next-gen update. It makes sense for Qualcomm to offer something more powerful than the X Elite.
</h3>

<p>
	<strong>Quick answer: </strong>There is no official confirmation that Qualcomm will create additional Snapdragon X SoCs beyond what has already been announced for the platform. However, with the announcement of the more affordable Snapdragon X Plus, another, more powerful platform beyond the Snapdragon X Elite is not entirely ruled out. An Oryon CPU with over 12 cores and higher clock speeds would help Qualcomm compete with Apple's M-series ARM chips.

	Qualcomm's Snapdragon X platform is a series of Systems-on-Chip (SoC) that is expected to significantly shake up the Windows on Arm landscape. The company has announced two platforms—the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus—with a total of four chips between them.

<p>
	The Snapdragon X Plus (X1P-64-100) has 10 CPU cores, a 42MB cache, and a 3.4GHz multithread frequency. It also lacks dual-core boost abilities, and its GPU hits 3.8 TFLOPs. Qualcomm hasn't listed any TDPs for its new chips, but based on performance specs, it's safe to assume that the X Plus will draw the least amount of power while the X Elite (X1E-84-100) will draw the most. (Perhaps more importantly, they all draw up to 50% less power than anything from Intel or AMD, although how efficient they are against Apple remains to be seen).

<p>
	Apple offers several performance tiers for its M-series chips using the ARM architecture. The M1 was launched in 2020, followed by the M1 Pro and M1 Max about a year later. About five months after that came the M1 Ultra.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The M2 launched in mid-2022, with the M2 Pro and M2 Max coming at the start of 2023. It took Apple about six months to launch the M2 Ultra used in desktops. We're now at the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, announced in October 2023. According to Apple's previous release schedules, an M3 Ultra will likely be announced soon.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Looking at the current range of M3 chips, Apple offers its CPUs between 8 and 16 cores, split into performance and efficiency cores designed for different tasks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The split big.LITTLE architecture, created by Arm over a decade ago, has not made it into Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips. Qualcomm believes that its Oryon CPU cores are all plenty efficient, and instead, it adds boost capabilities to two of its cores in the two top X Elite SKUs.

<p>
	Qualcomm hasn't been shy about showing off its Snapdragon X performance metrics compared to Apple's M-series SoCs. Performance claims by the company making the chips should always be approached warily, but it looks promising so far.
</p>

<p>

<p>
	Apple has since moved on to M3 hardware, but again, it looks like the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/results-are-in-qualcomms-snapdragon-x-elite-goes-toe-to-toe-with-apples-new-m3-pro-processor" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/results-are-in-qualcomms-snapdragon-x-elite-goes-toe-to-toe-with-apples-new-m3-pro-processor" rel="external nofollow">X Elite can best the M3 and keep up with the M3 Pro in Geekbench 6 multi-core performance</a>. </p>

<h2 id="section-the-possibility-of-a-third-snapdragon-x-soc">
	<span>The possibility of a third Snapdragon X SoC</span>
</h2>

<p>
	Qualcomm is showing off its first-gen Snapdragon X chips as powerful and efficient alternatives to Apple, Intel, and AMD hardware. These preliminary performance comparisons do, however, leave a high-end performance gap where Apple still reigns.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The M3 Max, available with 14 or 16 cores, is still the most powerful ARM CPU for laptops today. And that's before the expected M3 Ultra for desktops makes its debut. The M2 Ultra has 24 cores, and with Apple feeling the competitive heat from Qualcomm, it might go all-out with the M3 Ultra.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Qualcomm clearly isn't going to sit back and rest on its X Elite platform. The X Plus has already been announced as a more affordable option for OEMs to use on more budget-friendly laptops. The "Plus" moniker suggests that we could see something even more basic in the future, but that also works the other way,
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So what's stopping Qualcomm from creating a third Snapdragon X platform with superior performance compared to the X Elite SoCs? Qualcomm is clearly aiming to topple Apple's ARM CPU dominance, and it will need an SoC with enough performance to keep up with (or best) the M3 Max and whatever Apple is cooking up for its fourth-gen M4 chips. As <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-an-ai-pc" data-component-tracked="1" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/what-is-an-ai-pc" rel="external nofollow">AI PCs</a> continue to gain popularity, stronger NPUs will also be required to keep up with the performance demands of localized AI acceleration.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We are calling Qualcomm's next platform "Snapdragon X Ultra" or "Snapdragon X Extreme" based on speculation; no matter what it's called, it will need more cores (including boost cores) and higher frequencies to compete with Apple's top silicon.
</p>

	AMD looks to be gearing up for the Ryzen 9000 series launch. These upcoming AMD processors are expected to sport Zen 5 under the hood, which is the next major CPU architecture from the company.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The release should not be too far away and you can expect to see them in the second half (2H) of 2024 as we are already seeing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-ryzen-9000-zen-5-launch-not-be-too-far-as-chipset-driver-firmware-support-lands/" rel="external nofollow">firmware support as well as chipset support</a> for these CPUs. Alongside Ryzen 9000, the company is also working on the next-generation stuff.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	All of AMD's AM5 processors pack some amount of graphics which means technically all Ryzen 7000 and newer AMD CPUs are APUs. However, AMD has specified that based on the capability of the on-board GPU, APUs will be designated differently, as those with powerful integrated graphics, will continue to be referred to as APUs, while those with weaker graphics, with a few compute units (CUs), will simply be referred to as CPUs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These Ryzen APUs, codenamed "Strix Halo," are supposedly really powerful if leaked spec details are to be believed. According to the leak, these APUs will sport up to 16 Zen 5 cores (32 threads) and up to 20 RDNA 3.5 Work Group Processors (WGPs) or 40 Compute Units (CUs), leading to a total of up to 2560 stream processors on the top-end SKU.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD's APUs currently top out at 12 CUs or 768 stream processors which means the next generation of APUs could be over three times faster.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1714076347_amd_9050_apu_rdna_3.5_apu_lea" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="540" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/04/1714076347_amd_9050_apu_rdna_3.5_apu_leak_via_hkepc.jpg">
</p>

<p>
	<em>Image via HKEPC</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One thing that has always held back APU performance is the memory bandwidth which it derives from the system memory that is shared by both CPU cores as well as GPU cores. However, the rumoured specs suggest AMD is bringing MALL (Memory Attached Last Level) cache, commonly referred to as Infinity Cache, to these APUs, which will make them less reliant on the system memory bandwidth alone.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This will also help the CPU cores as they can more easily be fed data for processing as the CPU would not be fighting over bandwidth with the GPU.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Hence, the memory subsystem is apparently going to comprise 32MB of Inifity (MALL) cache alongside LPDDR5X-8000 support.

<p>
	Microsoft Cloud revenue made up over half of the company's total revenue during the last quarter with $35.1 billion, up from $28.5 billion in revenue a year ago. The company also added that the number of its Microsoft 365 Consumer subscribers went up to 80.8 million, up from 65.4 million a year ago.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company's Productivity and Business Processes division generated $19.6 billion in revenue for the quarter, which was up 12 percent from the same period a year ago. Its intelligent Cloud division made $26.7 billion in revenue during the last quarter, up 21 percent from a year ago.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft's More Personal Computing division, which includes its Windows, devices, and Xbox divisions, made $15.6 billion in revenues for the quarter. That was up 17 percent compared to a year ago. The Xbox division had a huge 62 percent increase in revenue, which was mostly due to adding money from the recently acquired Activision Blizzard.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows revenues went up by 11 percent overall, with Windows OEM revenue also going up by 11 percent while Windows Commercial products and cloud services revenues went higher by 13 percent from a year ago. However, device revenues from Microsoft actually went down by 17 percent for the quarter.

	The "AI mouse" is just the start.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Logitech announced a new mouse last week. A company rep reached out to inform Ars of Logitech’s “newest wireless mouse.” The gadget’s <a href="https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/mice/signature-ai-edition-m750-wireless-mouse.910-007396.html" rel="external nofollow">product page</a> reads the same as of this writing.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		I’ve had good experience with Logitech mice, especially wireless ones, one of which <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/gears-technica-the-keyboards-and-mice-our-editors-swear-by/" rel="external nofollow">I'm using now</a>. So I was keen to learn what Logitech might have done to improve on its previous wireless mouse designs. <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/05/logitech-mx-master-3s-review-the-best-wireless-mouse-gets-slightly-better/" rel="external nofollow">A quieter click</a>? A new shape to better accommodate my overworked right hand? Multiple onboard profiles in a business-ready design?
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		I was disappointed to learn that the most distinct feature of the Logitech Signature AI Edition M750 is a button located south of the scroll wheel. This button is preprogrammed to launch the ChatGPT prompt builder, which Logitech recently added to its peripherals configuration app Options+.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		That's pretty much it.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Beyond that, the M750 looks just like the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/01/logitech-signature-m650-a-quiet-wireless-mouse-for-big-small-or-left-hands/" rel="external nofollow">Logitech Signature M650</a>, which came out in January 2022.  Also, the new mouse’s forward button (on the left side of the mouse) is preprogrammed to launch Windows or macOS dictation, and the back button opens ChatGPT within Options+. As of this writing, the new mouse’s MSRP is $10 higher ($50) than the M650’s.

			M750 is indeed not the same mouse as M650. It has an extra button that has been preprogrammed to trigger the Logi AI Prompt Builder once the user installs Logi Options+ app. Without Options+, the button does DPI toggle between 1,000 and 1,600 DPI.
		</p>
	</blockquote>

	<p>
		However, a reprogrammable button south of a mouse's scroll wheel that can be set to launch an app or toggle DPI out of the box is pretty common, including among Logitech mice. Logitech's rep further claimed to me that the two mice use different electronic components, which Logitech refers to as the mouse’s platform. Logitech can reuse platforms for different models, the spokesperson said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Logitech's rep declined to comment on why the M650 didn't have a button south of its scroll wheel. Price is a potential reason, but Logitech also sells <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/11/logitech-pop-mouse-review-emoji-button-meets-colorful-simplicity/" rel="external nofollow">cheaper mice with this feature</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Still, the minimal differences between the two suggest that the M750 isn't worth a whole product release. I suspect that if it weren't for Logitech's trendy new software feature, the M750 wouldn't have been promoted as a new product.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The M750 also raises the question of how many computer input devices need to be equipped with some sort of buzzy, generative AI-related feature.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Logitech’s ChatGPT prompt builder
	</h2>

	<p>
		Logitech's much bigger release last week wasn't a peripheral but an addition to its Options+ app. You don't need the "new" M750 mouse to use Logitech's AI Prompt Builder; I was able to program my MX Master 3S to launch it. <a href="https://www.logitech.com/en-us/software/logi-options-plus.html" rel="external nofollow">Several</a> Logitech mice and keyboards support AI Prompt Builder.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		When you press a button that launches the prompt builder, an Options+ window appears. There, you can input text that Options+ will use to create a ChatGPT-appropriate prompt based on your needs:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="prompt-builder-e1714075563894.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="493" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/prompt-builder-e1714075563894.jpg">

		<em>A Logitech-provided image depicting its AI Prompt Builder software feature.</em>
	</div>

	<div>
		<em>Logitech</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		After you make your choices, another window opens with ChatGPT's response. Logitech said the prompt builder requires a ChatGPT account, but I was able to use GPT-3.5 without entering one (the feature can also work with GPT-4).
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The typical Arsian probably doesn't need help creating a ChatGPT prompt, and Logitech's new capability doesn't work with any other chatbots. The prompt builder could be interesting to less technically savvy people interested in some handholding for early ChatGPT experiences. However, I doubt if people with an elementary understanding of generative AI need instant access to ChatGPT.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The point, though, is instant access to ChatGPT capabilities, something that Logitech is arguing is worthwhile for its professional users. <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/logitech/comments/1cbnpv7/ai_got_my_mouse_banned/" rel="external nofollow">Some</a> Logitech <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/logitech/comments/1cazs6p/options_ai/" rel="external nofollow">customers</a>, though, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/logitech/comments/1cacdhz/i_dont_want_ai_in_my_mouse_software/" rel="external nofollow">seem</a> to disagree, especially with the AI Prompt Builder, meaning that Options+ has even more resources <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/logitech/comments/1c7x1am/why_is_this_logi_ai_running_i_didnt_ask_for_this/" rel="external nofollow">in the background.</a>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But Logitech isn’t the only gadget company eager to tie one-touch AI access to a hardware button.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Pinching your earbuds to talk to ChatGPT
	</h2>

	<p>
		Similarly to Logitech, Nothing is trying to give its customers access to ChatGPT quickly. In this case, access occurs by pinching the device. This month, Nothing announced that it "integrated Nothing earbuds and Nothing OS with ChatGPT to offer users instant access to knowledge directly from the devices they use most, earbuds and smartphones." The feature requires the latest Nothing OS and for the users to have a Nothing phone with ChatGPT installed. ChatGPT gestures work with Nothing's Phone (2) and Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear (a), but Nothing plans to expand to additional phones via software updates.

		Nothing also said it would embed "system-level entry points" to ChatGPT, like screenshot sharing and "Nothing-styled widgets," to Nothing smartphone OSes.

	<p>
		Nothing's ChatGPT integration may be a bit less intrusive than Logitech's since users who don't have ChatGPT on their phones won't be affected. But, again, you may wonder how many people asked for this feature and how reliably it will function.

		Microsoft’s Copilot button
	</h2>

	<p>
		Earlier this year, Microsoft added a new key to Windows keyboards for the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/ai-comes-for-your-pcs-keyboard-as-microsoft-adds-dedicated-copilot-key/" rel="external nofollow">first time since 1994</a>. Before the news dropped, your mind might’ve raced with the possibilities and potential usefulness of a new addition. However, the button ended up being a Copilot launcher button that <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/shoehorned-windows-copilot-key-is-just-a-reprogrammable-macro-journalist-shows/" rel="external nofollow">doesn’t even work</a> in an innovative way.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<img alt="copilot-key.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/copilot-key.jpg">
	</p>

	<div>
		<em>A rendering of the Copilot button.</em>
	</div>

	<div>
		<em>Microsoft</em>
	</div>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The necessity of a Copilot button for Windows PCs is dubious, particularly considering Copilot is still in beta and the world's still defining the best use cases for generative AI.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Further, shoehorning a Copilot button to the right of the right-Alt button means that users can miss out on useful buttons, like Menu, right-Ctrl (which is used heavily by <a href="https://guides.mtholyoke.edu/c.php?g=1242742&amp;p=9094130" rel="external nofollow">Korean users</a>), or right-Windows.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Microsoft’s Copilot button will be a requirement for the “<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/intel-microsoft-discuss-plans-to-run-copilot-locally-on-pcs-instead-of-in-the-cloud/" rel="external nofollow">AI PC</a>” certification that Microsoft and Intel are plotting. If a computer didn't come with a button dedicated to launching Microsoft’s proprietary chatbot, could it still perform AI workloads? Yes, of course; a Copilot button has nothing to do with a computer's AI-related technical capabilities.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		At this stage, we don't really know what the difference between an "AI PC" and a non-AI PC will be. It's possible that the certification, which will also require an integrated neural processing unit (NPU), will denote systems that can run a version of Copilot locally. As of this writing, though, the value of a certified Windows AI PC is unclear, considering the limited ways that Windows uses local NPUs, even compared to rival operating systems.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		While this is all sorted, the Copilot button will be ready and present, seeming more like a marketing tactic than a way of ensuring that PCs benefit serious AI users.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Stay skeptical
	</h2>

	<p>
		<img alt="10.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/10.jpg">

	</p>

	<p>
		AI will likely continue becoming a bigger part of tech gadgets' marketing points, especially devices targeting those who are eager to own the latest and greatest but have varied understandings of what AI can do and its relevance for them.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		It's not just generative AI. Audio peripherals have relied on machine learning to tout noise-canceling abilities for years. There are times when AI can improve a gadget. But over the next months and years, I expect that more devices that aren't necessarily better with AI integration will advertise questionable features related to the tech.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In the gaming world, for example, MSI announced this year <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/the-5-most-interesting-pc-monitors-from-ces-2024/" rel="external nofollow">a monitor</a> with a built-in NPU and the ability to quickly show <em>League of Legends players </em>when an enemy from outside of their field of view is arriving. MSI told <a href="https://www.pcworld.com/article/2195567/msis-240hz-4k-oled-monitor-uses-ai-to-turn-you-into-a-league-of-legends-god.html" rel="external nofollow">PCWorld</a> that it plans to release an app that lets users train the monitor with any game (it's unclear where the monitor would store training data). But some may think this feature is in the realm of cheating, especially since on-device AI processing and image generation means that standard anti-cheating methods wouldn't detect it.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Another example is <a href="https://www.pcgamer.com/get-ready-for-a-year-of-out-of-control-ai-marketing-revived-gameshark-brand-just-announced-peripherals-that-use-ai-to-adapt-to-your-play-style/" rel="external nofollow">AI Shark's vague claims</a>. This year, it announced technology that brands could license in order to make an "AI keyboard," "AI mouse," "AI game controller" or "AI headphones." The products claim to use some unspecified AI tech to learn gaming patterns and adjust accordingly. The AI keyboard and AI game controller can suggest key bindings (presumably through some software) based on how the owner uses the peripherals.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Despite my pessimism about the droves of AI marketing hype, if not <a href="https://www.sec.gov/news/speech/gurbir-remarks-pcce-041524" rel="external nofollow">AI washing</a>, likely to barrage the next couple of years of tech announcements, I have hope that consumer interest and common sense will yield skepticism that stops some of the worst so-called AI gadgets from getting popular or misleading people.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/11/humane-ai-pin-a-700-voice-command-box-definitely-wont-replace-your-phone/" rel="external nofollow">Humane AI Pin</a>, for example, has already lost favor, especially <a href="https://www.engadget.com/rabbit-r1-hands-on-already-more-fun-and-accessible-than-the-humane-ai-pin-163622560.html" rel="external nofollow">compared</a> to rival <a href="https://www.inverse.com/tech/rabbit-r1-features-humane-ai-pin-does-not-have" rel="external nofollow">Rabbit R1</a>... that is if you've bought into the idea of carrying around a standalone AI assistant device at all.

	The highly anticipated next-gen update for <em>Fallout 4</em> is finally here, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/fallout-4-next-gen-update-steam-deck-verification-and-more-land-later-this-month/" rel="external nofollow">just as promised</a>. Other than enhancements for the current-gen consoles, Bethesda has filled the update with Creation Club content, widescreen support, bug fixes, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The popular RPG is now a native application on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, and the developer now has two performance modes for players to choose from when jumping in. The first is Quality Mode, which runs the game at 30FPS at 4K resolution and at Ultra settings without dynamic resolution scaling. If the player is using a 120Hz display, Quality Mode will target 40FPS instead.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, the Performance Mode will target 60FPS at 4K resolution, and will utilize standard graphics settings alongside dynamic resolution to hit that frame rate. Interestingly, if <em>Fallout 4</em> detects a 1440p display is connected to the console, it will automatically run at that resolution and target 60FPS at Ultra settings instead, regardless of what mode was selected.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	PC players will find official support for widescreen and ultra-widescreen displays now. For handheld gaming fans, <em>Fallout 4 </em>Steam Deck verification has finally arrived with this update too. The title is now also available on the Epic Games Store for the first time.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are all the bug fixes included with this update straight from <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/377160/view/4182230563212382085" rel="external nofollow">the changelog</a>, which even apply to last-generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players:

	Later this year, the first Windows 11 PCs with new Snapdragon X processors will hit the market. While we already know a lot about the platform to power Microsoft's new "AI PCs," Qualcomm appears to be preparing even more. According to a new report from <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/snapdragon-x-models-3429369/" rel="external nofollow">Android Authority</a>, the company wants to release one more <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/qualcomm-unveils-snapdragon-x-plus-for-windows-11-arm-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon X Plus SKU</a> and even server variants of its new processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As of right now, Qualcomm officially unveiled four Snapdragon X processors: three X1 Elite SKUs and one X1 Plus. However, there should be one more X1 Plus variant with eight Oryon cores, fewer PCIe Gen 4 lanes, and less powerful graphics. The SKU in question is X1P-42-100.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Interestingly, Qualcomm is aiming at not just regular PCs, like the upcoming Surface Pro 10. The company reportedly works on server chips with Oryon cores. The "SD1" chip allegedly features the following specs:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			80 Oryon cores at up to 3.8GHz
		</li>
		<li>
			16 channels of DDR5 up to 5600MHz
		</li>
		<li>
			70 PCIe 5.0 lanes
		</li>
		<li>
			CXL v1.1 support
		</li>
		<li>
			9470-pin LGA socket (98.0×95.0mm)
		</li>
		<li>
			Support for a two-socket configuration
		</li>
		<li>
			Built on TSMC’s 5nm process (N5P)
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	According to the report, Qualcomm briefed its partners about its new server chip somewhere in late 2021 or early 2022. The SD1 could be Qualcomm's second attempt at server chips after the canceled Centriq in 2017.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Qualcomm has already provided <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/snapdragon-x-elite-and-plus-specs-leak-ahead-of-official-announcement/" rel="external nofollow">the first benchmarks</a> of its new Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors. They look on par with the modern competition, which backs the recent report about Microsoft being confident in its AI PCs being capable of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-sure-its-new-windows-11-ai-pcs-will-deliver-better-performance-than-macbooks/" rel="external nofollow">outperforming Apple's M3-based MacBook Air</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, real-world tests and benchmarks will have to wait for the first devices to hit the market, which should happen somewhere in mid-2024. Microsoft, for example, plans to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-plans-to-hold-an-ai-themed-windows-and-surface-event-may-20-ahead-of-build-2024/" rel="external nofollow">unveil the ARM-powered Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6</a> on May 20, 2024.

	Same NPU, same architecture as X Elite, but fewer cores and lower clock speeds.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series of chips promises to be the company’s first that can go toe-to-toe with Apple Silicon, and the PC ecosystem <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/is-the-arm-version-of-windows-ready-for-its-close-up/" rel="external nofollow">is reacting accordingly</a>. Microsoft reportedly plans for the Arm version of its next Surface tablet to be the flagship, and major apps like <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/google-launches-chrome-nightlies-for-windows-11-on-arm/" rel="external nofollow">Chrome</a> and Dropbox have recently released Arm-native Windows versions for the first time.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Ahead of the chips' launch late this year, Qualcomm announced a new lower-end model destined for cheaper devices. Dubbed the Snapdragon X Plus, it shares a lot in common with the flagship <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/10/qualcomm-snapdragon-x-elite-looks-like-the-windows-worlds-answer-to-apple-silicon/" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon X Elite</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The Snapdragon X Plus includes 10 CPU cores instead of the Elite’s 12, though the more noticeable change is its lack of support for clock-speed boosting; the chip’s 3.4 GHz base frequency is as fast as it goes, where the Elite chips can boost two cores to 4.2 GHz and one core up to 4.3 GHz, depending on the specific model. Qualcomm also rates the X Plus’ integrated GPU at 3.8 TFLOPs, down from the X Elite’s maximum of 4.6 TFLOPs. Aside from those high-level FLOP numbers, we still know very little about how the GPU will be configured; we also don’t know the ratio of “big” and “little” CPU cores.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Qualcomm says the Snapdragon X Plus’ multi-threaded performance still compares favorably to Apple’s M3, outrunning it by about 10 percent; Qualcomm doesn’t provide any single-core scores, which are presumably less flattering. The company also says it outruns Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155H and AMD's Ryzen 9 7940HS chips in multi-core performance when the chips are using the same power, or it can match those x86 chips' performance while using 65 percent less power.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		All Snapdragon X chips share the same basic Oryon CPU architecture, developed by the former Apple Silicon engineers that Qualcomm acquired when it bought a company called Nuvia in 2021. The Elite and Plus chips also use the same 4nm manufacturing process and the exact same neural processing unit (NPU). This ensures that both chips will meet Microsoft’s rumored requirements for “AI PCs,” a list of specs that also includes 16GB of RAM and (for some reason) the dedicated Copilot key. The X Elite and X Plus chips all support up to 64GB of LPDDR5X memory.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		It’s not clear what “AI PCs” will be able to do that regular non-AI PCs can’t, but it’s likely that they’ll be able to run some version of the Copilot generative AI assistant locally on-device. Testers have also found an AI-focused revamp of Windows Explorer in recent testing builds. Microsoft recently released Phi-3-mini, a smaller language model that claims to be able to match GPT 3.5’s performance using 3.8 billion parameters instead of 175 billion. This would be well-suited to on-device processing—fewer parameters means lower system requirements, faster performance, and a smaller footprint on disk.
	</p>

	In September 2023, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/microsoft_xbox/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Xbox</a> announced that it would <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/new-xbox-feature-update-adds-a-new-way-to-store-game-captures-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">begin automatically deleting game captures</a> and images stored on the Xbox Network. This automatic deletion was applied to game captures and images that are at least 90 days old. The first set of deletions was to take place in January 2024.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is speculated that this did not take place because Xbox postponed its plans. However, according to a new Xbox notification shared by a Reddit user, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/xbox/comments/1cb6hfd/note_to_all_xbox_users/" rel="external nofollow">volcaandsora</a>, Xbox has announced that it will start deleting game captures starting May 30, 2024.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While it is unclear if anyone was affected by Microsoft's deletion of game captures in January 2024, as per the previous announcement, it looks like now we have until May 30, 2024, to back up all of our game captures and images. The images that are at least 90 days old and are stored on the Xbox Network are again affected by the new notification.
</p>

<p>

</div>

<p>
	Notably, images on Xbox Network mean screenshots or images that are uploaded to Xbox's servers, and not the images that are stored locally on a console. But to be extra safe, we would suggest you take a backup of all your favorite game's screenshots and images on an external hard drive or use any of the cloud storage options.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To back up your game captures on your Xbox;
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Go to <strong>My Games &amp; Apps</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Select <strong>Apps</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Choose <strong>Captures</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Here, you will be able to move them to OneDrive, an external hard drive, or a USB.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You also get the option to change the location and set future captures to be automatically stored in OneDrive. This would ensure that everything is backed up, and you don't have to worry about losing your favorite game's screenshots and images. Do keep in mind that the free version of OneDrive offers a 5GB limit.
</p>

	Latest leaks suggest that the next-gen graphics cards from AMD, the Radeon RX 8000 will use slower GDDR6 VRAM. Rather than the latest and faster GDDR7 memory.
</h3>

<p>
	In August 2023, we reported how AMD is all likely to release the Radeon RX 8000 graphics cards series without any flagship graphics card.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The RX 8000 series is all set to have just two GPUs. The Navi 43 and the Navi 44. This means that the series is all set to target the mid-range of graphics cards, not flagship ones like the RX 7900 XTX or even RX 8900 XTX.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It’s not the first time AMD has done so. It has done something similar in the AMD Radeon RX 5000 and Radeon 400 series before.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, those who thought that AMD is going to pair the RX 8000 with faster VRAM, are going to be disappointed.

</div>

<p>
	To those unaware, 18Gbps is commonly found in GDDR6 graphics memory. GDDR7, which was <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/gddr7-memory-for-graphics-cards-officially-announced/" title="announced officially" rel="external nofollow">announced officially</a> about a month ago, starts from 28Gbps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The top Nvidia RTX 4000 graphics cards like the GeForce RTX 4090 and others come with GDDR6X memory clocked at 21Gbps.
</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">
	Not A Surprising Move
</h3>

<p>
	The AMD RX 8000 coming with just 18Gbps might disappoint many. However, unlike others, we aren’t surprised.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First, as it’s rumored, the AMD Radeon RX 8000 series will not have a flagship graphics card. So why would AMD put newly released and expensive GDDR7 VRAM in it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Second, AMD’s RX 8000 series will come earlier than the Nvidia RTX 5000 graphics cards, which were earlier <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/next-gen-nvidia-rtx-5000-gpu-are-two-years-away/" title="Next-Gen Nvidia RTX 5000 GPU Are At Least Two Years Away" rel="external nofollow">stated to release next year</a>. Though the latest rumors suggest that the <a href="https://ourdigitech.com/hardware/nvidia-rtx-5090-and-rtx-5080-could-release-later-this-year/" title="Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 could release later this year" rel="external nofollow">RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 will release</a> earlier than expected, possibly later this year itself. So AMD might not have enough GDDR7 chips with them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Third, it’s rumored that the Nvidia RTX 5000 graphics cards are going to rival both AMD Radeon RX 8000 series and AMD Radeon RX 9000 series. So it’s very much likely that AMD will use the GDDR7 VRAM in RX 9000 instead.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So this move by AMD shouldn’t be seen as a surprise. It was, in fact, quite expected move. What should be interesting, however, is how exactly the RX 8000 series performs and what it’s going to be priced at.
</p>

	The <em>Fallout </em>franchise's <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/fallout-games-get-big-sales-and-player-boosts-on-steam-thanks-to-discounts-and-that-tv-show/" rel="external nofollow">upwards trend</a> in charts is showing no signs of stopping. Bethesda today announced that within a day, the entirety of the Fallout games saw almost one million players log in and explore the waste land. The one and only online multiplayer game from the mainline RPG series broke a record too. <em>Fallout 76 </em>has reached a million active players in a single day.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The announcements arrived via <a href="https://twitter.com/Fallout/status/1782857892409778254" rel="external nofollow">social media posts</a> on the official <em>Fallout</em> account, with them saying "Thank you to the over one million of you who adventured with us in #Fallout76 in a single day … and almost five million across all Fallout games in a single day!"

	Steam is the only platform that shows live player numbers for these titles. SteamDB's <a href="https://steamdb.info/app/1151340/charts/" rel="external nofollow">latest data</a> shows <em>Fallout 76</em> broke its concurrent all-time player peaks just two days ago to hit almost 75,000 players on Steam alone. Don't forget that the title is also available on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as Microsoft's Xbox and PC Game Pass subscription programs.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, <em>Fallout 4's</em> <a href="https://steamdb.info/app/377160/charts/" rel="external nofollow">Steam concurrent player numbers</a> hit a peak of almost 165,000 earlier this week. The RPG is almost ready to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/fallout-4-next-gen-update-steam-deck-verification-and-more-land-later-this-month/" rel="external nofollow">receive its long-promised next-gen update</a> too, bringing performance improvements, free content, and bug fixes to players across all platforms.

<p>
	At the same time, the Obsidian-developed <a href="https://steamdb.info/app/22380/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Fallout New Vegas</em></a> almost reached its launch-day peak concurrent numbers this week, The fan-favorite RPG hit 43,000 players on Steam a few days ago. As millions logged in to these titles, even the popular modding platform Nexus was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nexusmods-blames-the-popularity-of-the-fallout-tv-series-for-its-heavy-site-traffic-issues/" rel="external nofollow">recently having trouble</a> with the surge of players attempting to access its trove of custom modifications.

	The massive resurgence of players for these classic titles, considering the last single-player <em>Fallout </em>entry released nine years ago, is primarily thanks to the brand-new live-action adaptation from Amazon Prime Video. The well-received TV series has <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-fallout-tv-show-is-officially-getting-a-second-season-confirms-amazon/" rel="external nofollow">proven to be a massive hit</a>, becoming one of the top three most-watched shows ever on the network. The curious case of a living room screen making Windows' Settings app disappear.
</h3>

<div class="article-content post-page" itemprop="articleBody">

	<p>
		The modern "smart" TV asks a lot of us. In exchange for connecting you to a few streaming services you use, a TV will <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/walmart-buying-tv-brand-vizio-for-its-ad-fueling-customer-data/" rel="external nofollow">collect data</a>, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/11/after-luring-customers-with-low-prices-amazon-stuffs-fire-tvs-with-ads/" rel="external nofollow">show ads</a>, and serve as another <a href="https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/04/roku-forcing-2-factor-authentication-after-breach-of-600k-accounts/" rel="external nofollow">vector</a> for <a href="https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/04/patches-released-for-as-many-as-91000-hackable-lg-tvs-exposed-to-the-internet/" rel="external nofollow">bad actors</a>. In a few reported cases, though, a modern connected TV has been blamed for attacks not on privacy, eyeballs, or passwords but on an entirely different computer.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The TV in question is a Hisense TV, and the computer is a Windows PC, specifically one belonging to Priscilla Snow, a <a href="https://ghoulnoise.bandcamp.com/" rel="external nofollow">musician</a> and audio designer in Montréal, Quebec. Her <a href="https://cohost.org/ghoulnoise/post/5286766-do-not-buy-hisense-t" rel="external nofollow">post about her Hisense experience</a> reads like a mystery. Of course, because you already know the crime and the culprit, it's more like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbo" rel="external nofollow">a <em>Columbo</em> episode</a>. Either way, it's thrilling in a very specific I-can't-believe-that-fixed-it kind of thrill.
	</p>

	<h2>
		Disappearing Settings, keyboards, remote desktops, and eventually taskbars
	</h2>

	<p>
		Snow's Windows PC had "a few hiccups over the past couple of years," Snow wrote on April 19. She couldn't open display settings, for one. A MIDI keyboard interface stopped working. Task manager would start to hang until force-closed. Video capture cards had trouble connecting. As Snow notes, any veteran of a Windows computer that has had lots of stuff installed on it can mentally write off most of these things, or at least stash them away until the next reinstall.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Then, while trying to figure out why a remote desktop session wasn't working, the task bars on Snow's PC disappeared. The PC refused to launch any settings panels. After updating drivers and restarting the PC, the taskbars returned, but only for six days. Snow hunted for solutions, and after using "the exact right string in my search," she found <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsinsiders/comments/17wv27c/no_taskbar_and_task_manager_freezes/" rel="external nofollow">a Reddit thread</a> that led to <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1339707/help-with-figuring-out-what-is-causing-waitchain-d" rel="external nofollow">a Microsoft support question</a>, all describing the same kinds of seemingly spectral problems her computer was having over time, with no clear cause.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		User Narayan B wrote in Microsoft's forum that the issue is the Hisense TV generating "random UUIDs for UPNP network discovery every few minutes." Windows, seemingly not knowing why any device would routinely do this, sees and adds those alternate Hisense devices to its <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/270665/what-is-device-association-framework-provider-host-and-why-is-it-running-on-my-pc/" rel="external nofollow">Device Association Framework</a>, or DAF. This service being stuffed full of attention-grabbing devices can hang up Task Manager, Bluetooth, the Settings apps, File Explorer, and more.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The fix is deleting hundreds of keys from the registry. Narayan B wrote that noticed his Hisense TV flooding Windows' device discovery systems before but "didn't think Windows would go for a toss due to this." Snow did the same, and everything—Task Manager, MIDI keyboard, remote desktop, even a CRT monitor she had assumed was broken—started working again.
	</p>

	<h2>
		UUID, UPNP, DAF, and hundreds of Registry keys
	</h2>

	<p>
		Along with deleting hundreds of keys with maniacal keyboard pounding, Snow notes in chats attached to her post that she disabled "Set up network connected devices automatically" on her "Private networks" settings in Windows. And, of course, she recommend not buying the same Hisense 50Q8G she bought, or at least not having it on the same network.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The mystery is solved, but the culprit remains very much at large. Or culprits—plural—depending on how you think a Windows PC should react to a shapeshifting TV.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Ars reached out to Hisense to ask for comment and will update the post if we hear back.
	</p>

	Samsung is now mass-producing its 9th-generation triple-level cell (TLC) vertical NAND memory chips for high-performance and high-density solid-state drives. The new chips boast a smaller size and a 50% density improvement over the previous generation NAND memory.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides its smaller size, Samsung's new V-NAND memory packs several new technologies. In the official blog post, Samsung says it uses cell interference avoidance and cell life extension to make memory last longer and work more reliably. Also, the company uses "channel hole etching to maximize fabrication productivity:

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		Samsung’s advanced “channel hole etching” technology showcases the company’s leadership in process capabilities. This technology creates electron pathways by stacking mold layers and maximizes fabrication productivity as it enables simultaneous drilling of the industry’s highest cell layer count in a double-stack structure.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		As the number of cell layers increase, the ability to pierce through higher cell numbers becomes essential, demanding more sophisticated etching techniques.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Samsung's 9th-generation vertical NAND uses the new "Toggle 5.1" NAND flash interface, which improves data input/out speeds by 33% up to 3.2Gbps. Samsung says it plans to use new memory chips and the interface for high-performance PCIe 5.0 SSDs. As of right now, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsungs-new-affordable-990-evo-ssd-supports-both-pcie-gen-4-and-gen-5/" rel="external nofollow">the budget-friendly 990 EVO</a> is the only PCIe 5.0 solid-state drive from Samsung.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, technological improvements in the new V-NAND memory from Samsung allowed the company to decrease power consumption by 10%.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Samsung is already producing triple-level cell V-NAND memory, and the production of quad-level cell V-NAND will begin in the second half of 2024.
</p>

<p>

	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Through our latest V-NAND, Samsung will continue to set the trend for the high-performance, high-density solid-state drive (SSD) market that meets the needs for the coming AI generation.
