	Alongside the release of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tails-611-out-now-with-more-protection-against-partitioning-errors-that-can-wipe-data/" rel="external nofollow">Tails 6.11</a> earlier this year, the Tails Project revealed that Radically Open Security was auditing the Tails operating system to better protect users. The audit has now concluded and no remote code vulnerabilities were found.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The only issues that were found required a compromised low-privileged amnesia user, which is the default account in Tails. Luckily for users, the Tails developers are quick on their toes and asked for information about the vulnerabilities before the report was published and released fixes for the discovered issues, which users now already enjoy.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here’s an overview of what was fixed:

</p>

<p>
	Following the fixing of the bugs, the Tails team also did a postmortem of the audit to find out what cultural things need to change and which technical things need to be changed that had a role in allowing the entry of bugs into the operating system in the first place.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The major cultural change that Tails has adopted is how it shares vulnerabilities with the public. So far, it said it has been too secretive about vulnerabilities, but going forward, has adopted the <a href="https://tails.net/contribute/security_policy/" rel="external nofollow">security issue response policy</a> based on the policy of the Tor Project’s Network Team.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It also found that refactoring large amounts of code can also be a way in for security bugs so from now on it will be more intentional and only do large refactoring when it’s worth the effort and risk.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For anyone running Tails, these are extremely positive developments. Tails is used by all sorts of people for sensitive work, so knowing that it’s being proactive on security is reassuring.

	JetBrains has launched the Early Access Program (EAP) for Rider 2025.2 for .NET developers. This follows the<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/jetbrains-opens-the-intellij-idea-20252-early-access-program-to-developers/" rel="external nofollow"> recent opening of the IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2 EAP</a>, which began just yesterday.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those unfamiliar, JetBrains' Early Access Program (EAP) offers developers a chance to explore pre-release versions of its software, complete with upcoming features and improvements ahead of the official launch. While these builds are free to use, they may not be as stable as the final versions and typically remain valid for 30 days from their release date. Access requires a JetBrains Account, and you should be prepared for occasional bugs or incomplete functionality.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first preview build of Rider 2025.2 EAP 1 brings some interesting changes. A significant one is enhanced support for Roslyn-based suppressors. These tools allow analyzer authors to quash unnecessary warnings with custom logic, going beyond simple <strong><code>[SuppressMessage]</code></strong> attributes or <strong><code>#pragma</code></strong> directives.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another notable update, driven by community feedback, is the return of the Pencils widget. This widget, which can be enabled in the status bar, offers quick access to visual indicators for code style inspections, highlighting levels, and inlay hints. It is disabled by default in Rider 2025.2 EAP 1 and the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/jetbrains-releases-resharper-and-rider-202512-bringing-multiple-bug-fixes/" rel="external nofollow">recent Rider 2025.1.2 update</a>. To turn it on, you will need to navigate through the main menu via <em>View | Appearance | Status Bar Widgets</em> or add it directly from the status bar itself. A restart of the IDE is required after enabling it for the changes to take effect, though disabling it does not require one.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Beyond these features, Rider 2025.2 EAP 1 includes several important fixes outlined below:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			The <em>Detach</em> action is now available for C++ processes, allowing you to disconnect the debugger without terminating the application. <a href="https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RIDER-70201/Run-Detach-button-is-missing-for-C" rel="external nofollow">RIDER-70201</a>
		</li>
		<li>
			Rider can once again successfully create IIS virtual directories when running or debugging ASP.NET applications targeting the .NET Framework. <a href="https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RIDER-122091/Unable-to-create-IIS-virtual-directory" rel="external nofollow">RIDER-122091</a>
		</li>
		<li>
			Rider no longer crashes when editing or merging <code>.sln</code> files due to a critical lexer issue. <a href="https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RIDER-114986/Sln-file-lexer-crash" rel="external nofollow">RIDER-114986</a>
		</li>
		<li>
			We’ve resolved an issue where identifiers were incorrectly colored or partially styled in Unity projects. <a href="https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RIDER-124907/Color-scheme-is-broken" rel="external nofollow">RIDER-124907</a>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	If you are keen to try these out, the Rider 2025.2 EAP 1 build <a href="https://www.jetbrains.com/rider/nextversion/" rel="external nofollow">can be downloaded from the JetBrains website</a>, through the<a href="https://www.jetbrains.com/toolbox/" rel="external nofollow"> Toolbox App</a>, or as a <a href="https://snapcraft.io/rider" rel="external nofollow">snap package from the SnapCraft </a>store for compatible Linux distributions.

	Microsoft has released a new hotpatch out-of-band cumulative update for Windows 11 LTSC 2024. The update follows the monthly Patch Tuesday which was released earlier this week under <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5058411-kb5058405-may-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5058411 and KB5058405</a> and became the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/first-windows-11-24h2-hotpatch-is-coming-soon-microsoft-shares-a-bunch-of-useful-stuff/" rel="external nofollow">first hotpatch update for Windows 11 24H2</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those not familiar, an out-of-band (OOB) update is neither a B-release (Patch Tuesday) or a C-release (non-security preview).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft notes that the new out-of-band update has "miscellaneous security improvements" to improve the internal OS functionality." No other issues are documented for this release, says the company. It writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

	<ul>
		<li>
			This update makes miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality. There are no additional issues documented in this release.
		</li>

</blockquote>

<p>
	The tech giant says that the update will download and install automatically from the Windows Update and Microsoft Update channels and thus no manual intervention is necessary. Earlier this month, we reported on BitLocker encryption on Windows 11 24H2, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-users-reportedly-losing-data-due-to-microsofts-forced-bitlocker-encryption/" rel="external nofollow">leading to unaware users losing their data</a>. However, BitLocker troubles have now hit Windows 10 as well. Following the latest Patch Tuesday updates released earlier this week for the month of May 2025 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5058379-kb5058392--kb5058383-kb5058387-may-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5058379/ KB5058392 / KB5058383/ KB5058387</a>), users are reporting that their systems are running into the BitLocker recovery screen upon reboot after the installation. The problem is widespread across hardware OEMs as Lenovo, Dell, HP users all report the same problem.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is a bug affecting enterprise PCs managed via Intune, WSUS, and SCCM and is the second enterprise-related major bug to hit such devices this month following the previous one that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-shares-group-policy-fix-for-bug-that-blocked-windows-11-24h2-on-23h222h2-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">blocked the Windows 11 2024 update</a> on 22H2/23H2 devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A user mersongeorge on the Microsoft forums opened a thread titled "May 13 -KB5058379 Windows 10 leads to corruption and endpoints asking for bitlocker key...."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The user describes the problem as they write, "the latest <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5058379-kb5058392--kb5058383-kb5058387-may-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5058379</a> released May 13 quality update failed in Windows 10 devices. Some devices it caused triggering bitlocker key window after restart. Still Update seems failed. Some fall in loop of restarts. ..This is mainly affected devices managed by Intune. Lenovo Thinkpad. some cases Keyboard is getting disabled and user not able to pass the bitlocker key."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Fortunately, Microsoft is aware of the bug in KB5058379 and how it causes restart loops, update fails, and BitLocker recovery prompts. The company also provided a workaround for the same. The issue has been validated on Intel-based Dell Precision 5570 and 5680 models. A user Callum Hargreaves2 on the same thread confirmed this. The company has suggested that the issue is related to Intel's Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), but further investigation is ongoing. Thus, disabling the TXT feature in BIOS can potentially fix the issue.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The user <a href="https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/may-13-kb5058379-windows-10-leads-to-corruption/58b3b179-70a0-4bd8-abae-c9b89dd9c9b9?page=2" rel="external nofollow">writes</a>:

	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			Continue to keep affected devices with update installation paused.
		</li>
		<li>
			For devices already affected and requiring BitLocker recovery, applying the recovery key and rolling back the update as you described is the advised interim measure.
		</li>
		<li>
			Disabling TXT in BIOS is another possible workaround, but as you noted, it may require remote staff to come in and is not ideal for large deployments.
		</li>
		<li>
			Microsoft is working to document the issue on the Windows Release Health and Microsoft 365 Admin Center portals; updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	For those not familiar, Intel TXT is a security feature built into Intel processors and chipsets. It helps protect computers from software attacks by ensuring that applications run in a safe, isolated space. TXT uses hardware-based security to keep data secure and incorporates features like Intel PTT (or commonly called TPM) and Secure Boot.

	Microsoft took a break from shipping Canary builds to Windows Insiders <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-delays-promised-ai-upgrade-for-settings-app-no-new-windows-11-builds-this-week/" rel="external nofollow">due to various bugs and issues</a> that needed to be addressed. Now, the company finally has a release-worthy build, and it is available for download.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you are a Windows Insider in the Canary Channel, you can download build 27858. While the update is not the biggest one, it brings some interesting changes to the desktop and the taskbar. On the desktop, Microsoft finally removed the colored backplate for packaged Windows apps like Snipping Tool or Calculator. Now, icons are bigger and easier to read. Just keep in mind that you will have to create new shortcuts to see the change in action.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Next, Microsoft is adding a new taskbar button to make it easier to invoke the emoji panel. You will find it next to other tray icons. If you prefer launching the emoji panel using he old Win + Period shortcut, you can toggle off the new button by right-clicking it or visiting the taskbar settings.
</p>

<p>
	Other changes and fixes in today's release include improved accessibility for File Explorer, fixes for UI crashes when dragging a window, fixes for non-working Night Light, broken Wi-Fi connections in the previous builds, fixes for system crashes with the KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE code, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Known bugs in build 27858 include the following:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		[<strong>General</strong>]

		<ul>
			<li>
				[<strong>IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs</strong>] If you are joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel or retail, you will lose Windows Hello pin and biometrics to sign into your PC with error 0xd0000225 and error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available”. You should be able to re-create your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN”.
			</li>
			<li>
				[<strong>NEW</strong>] You may see an Administrative Templates error message when opening Group Policy Editor. If you click OK, you should be able to proceed as normal.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		[<strong>Input</strong>]

		<ul>
			<li>
				[<strong>NEW</strong>] Pen input may be non-responsive on some PCs that support pen for inking.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

	Towards the end of March this year, Microsoft announced that it would soon start prompting users to back up and sync their files to OneDrive. The company published the news on its Microsoft 365 (M365) Admin Center portal, where it said that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-explains-benefits-of-why-it-will-soon-prompt-m365-files-be-backed-up-to-onedrive/" rel="external nofollow">"eligible" M365 users will be prompted to do so</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The tech giant is making backup a big part of Windows 11 as well with a new <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-wants-to-make-windows-11-backup-migration-and-transfer-easier-with-new-native-app/" rel="external nofollow">migration tool inside its official Backup app</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft shared a list of all the advantages of OneDrive's known folder move (KFM) to help users and admins understand why such a move would be beneficial to end users, aside from the obvious one of backup. It wrote:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		When users are enrolled in KFM, the files in their enrolled folder benefit from the advantages of cloud files:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Copilot support:</strong> Files are Copilot-enabled, making it simple and intuitive to access and leverage Copilot.Easy collaboration: Cloud files enable sharing, commenting, and easy collaboration, with AutoSave ensuring changes are frequently and consistently saved.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Access from anywhere</strong>: Cloud files can be accessed from Windows, Mac, the web, iOS, and Android with synchronized changes.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Increased security and compliance</strong>: Enterprises can increase security and compliance, because all cloud files are subject to default classification, labeling, and protection (CLP) policies and auto-labeling.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Backup</strong>: Protection from data loss due to device failure.
		</li>
		<li>
			Access to cloud-specific features like AutoSave and Version History
		</li>
		<li>
			After enrolling, users can access their files in the known folders in File Explorer or OneDrive.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	However, similar to the other recent delays for Microsoft 365 (M365) feature rollouts like <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-puts-major-teams-outlook-microsoft-365-apps-unified-management-on-hold/" rel="external nofollow">unified app management for M365 products</a> and changes to the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-shares-update-on-major-change-about-windows-new-outlook-enabledisable-option/" rel="external nofollow">New Outlook enablement option</a>, the OneDrive prompts schedule has been pushed back too. A new M365 Admin Center message ID has been issued as well, and the feature is not arriving before June 2025.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>Updated May 15, 2025</strong>: We have updated the timeline below. Thank you for your patience.
	</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		This message replaces MC1024398 (Updated) Microsoft 365 apps: We will prompt users to back up their files in Microsoft OneDrive (published March 2025, updated March 2025) and includes additional details. Please refer to this new post going forward:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>Coming soon</strong>: Eligible users will be prompted in the Message Bar below the toolbar in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows desktops to enroll in OneDrive Known Folder Move (KFM). Users will be able to select the folders to back up in Microsoft OneDrive.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>When this will happen:</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Public Preview: We will begin rolling out mid-April 2025 and expect to complete by late April 2025.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out mid-May 2025 (previously early May) and expect to complete by mid-June 2025.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Despite all these delays, there is a big positive regarding M365 apps that the company announced recently. Neowin, a few days ago, noticed that Microsoft had quietly <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-quietly-extends-windows-10-support-for-m365-apps-like-teams-outlook-onedrive/" rel="external nofollow">extended support for the service on Windows 10 up to 2028</a>.

	Microsoft claims Copilot and ChatGPT are synonymous, but three-quarters of its AI division pay out of pocket for OpenAI's superior offering because the Redmond giant won't allow them to expense it.
</h3>

<p>
	<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/copilot" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/copilot" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Copilot</a> (formerly Bing Chat) and ChatGPT are arguably the most popular AI chatbots with broad adoption across the world. However, the latter has a health lead. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella attributed its broad adoption to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-ceo-claims-openai-had-two-years-of-runway-in-the-ai-race" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-ceo-claims-openai-had-two-years-of-runway-in-the-ai-race" rel="external nofollow">OpenAI having a 2-year runway to build and develop ChatGPT uncontested</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Interestingly, a separate report suggested that the top complaint about Copilot to Microsoft's AI division is that "<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-says-chatgpt-isnt-better-than-copilot-ai-youre-just-not-using-it-as-intended" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-says-chatgpt-isnt-better-than-copilot-ai-youre-just-not-using-it-as-intended" rel="external nofollow">Copilot isn't as good as ChatGPT</a>." Microsoft dismissed the claim, attributing it to poor prompt engineering skills. The company blatantly indicated that users weren't leveraging the tool's capabilities as intended, hence the disappointing user experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Microsoft has since launched <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-copilot-academy-is-here-to-improve-your-prompt-engineering-skills" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-copilot-academy-is-here-to-improve-your-prompt-engineering-skills" rel="external nofollow">Copilot Academy</a> to remedy the situation, a new report by <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2025-05-15/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-on-his-ai-efforts-and-openai-partnership" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2025-05-15/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-on-his-ai-efforts-and-openai-partnership" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Bloomberg Businessweek</a> seemingly corroborates the rising complaints about Copilot and its user experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to some Microsoft insiders, the report details that Satya Nadella's vision for Microsoft Copilot wasn't clear. Following the hype surrounding ChatGPT's launch, Microsoft wanted to hop on the AI train, too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A dedicated software team showcased demos with OpenAI-powered functions built into Office programs, but Nadella wasn't pleased, further indicating that something was still missing.<em> “This feels like just a set of features,”</em> Nadella added.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As such, the team took a different approach that bundled OpenAI's technology into a single assistant, Microsoft Copilot. According to a former Microsoft Copilot product manager, Microsoft AI assistants are inconsistent, partly due to poor coordination between teams and the company's rigidity to risk it all with AI. <em>“It felt like there were 13 different Copilots,” </em>a former Microsoft design leader added.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Interestingly, while Microsoft Copilot garnered user interest, many customers reportedly discovered it was an inferior product with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/the-new-copilot-ai-experience-makes-it-difficult-for-microsoft-to-state-its-case-against-openais-offering-until-they-bring-back-the-old-version-i-will-be-going-back-to-chatgpt" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/the-new-copilot-ai-experience-makes-it-difficult-for-microsoft-to-state-its-case-against-openais-offering-until-they-bring-back-the-old-version-i-will-be-going-back-to-chatgpt" rel="external nofollow">a degraded user experience</a> compared to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

			As a result, a concerning trend emerged where users defaulted to ChatGPT for questions and pasted the responses into Microsoft Word rather than leveraging the in-built Copilot service. However, Microsoft has an upper hand over OpenAI with its <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-teams-gets-copilot-to-make-hybrid-meetings-a-breeze" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/microsoft-teams-gets-copilot-to-make-hybrid-meetings-a-breeze" rel="external nofollow">AI-powered intelligent recap feature</a> that provides quick summaries for Teams meetings.

					While ChatGPT is miles ahead of Copilot, the report details that Microsoft's focus on software security, compliance, data protection, and legal reviews gives it a competitive edge and unique selling point.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					According to Microsoft Teams lead Jeff Taper:
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					<em>"Hey, you like ChatGPT? This is that, but better: more powerful user experience, better security,” says Jeff Teper, who runs Teams."</em>
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					However, a former Copilot manager admitted that something was still holding Microsoft back from taking more risks with Copilot. The manager described it as <em>"a kind of post-traumatic stress disorder from embarrassments that stretch as far back as the proto chatbot Clippy."</em>
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Ironically, Microsoft was recently placed on the spot by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, who claimed that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/salesforce-ceo-claims-copilot-is-just-the-new-clippy" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/salesforce-ceo-claims-copilot-is-just-the-new-clippy" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft had done a significant disservice to the industry with Copilot</a>, branding it a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/salesforce-ceo-claims-microsoft-is-in-panic-mode-copilot-is-a-flop" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/salesforce-ceo-claims-microsoft-is-in-panic-mode-copilot-is-a-flop" rel="external nofollow">Clippy 2.0 that doesn't deliver value to clients</a>.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					The manager further disclosed that Microsoft engineers knew that ChatGPT had a competitive edge over Copilot, mainly due to its capability to get more things done without annoying limitations.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Out of the hundreds of employees in Copilot's division, approximately three-quarters paid for ChatGPT from their own pockets because Microsoft won't let them expense the rival AI subscription. However, the Microsoft Teams lead claimed that this was a common occurrence within the company, which would allow employees to test rival products to better understand the market.

	Microsoft Edge users can download a new minor update for the browser, version 136.0.3240.76, which addresses "various bugs and performance issues" and resolves security patches.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unlike Edge 137, which recently arrived in the Beta Channel and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-a-lot-of-features-from-the-edge-browser/" rel="external nofollow">removed many features from the browser</a>, version 136.0.3240.76 does not include any functional changes. More importantly, it fixes a security vulnerability that is known to be exploited in the wild. In other words, hackers are already using the Chromium security hole for attacks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The vulnerability in question is <a href="https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2025-4664" rel="external nofollow">CVE-2025-4664</a>, dubbed "Insufficient policy enforcement in Loader." It is a high-severity vulnerability that allows hackers to trick the browser into revealing information from other websites, which could lead to sensitive information leaks. Google has already patched the vulnerability, and other Chromium-based browsers, including Edge, are now following suit.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The second patched vulnerability is<a href="https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2025-4609" rel="external nofollow"> CVE-2025-4609</a>, "Incorrect handle provided in unspecified circumstances in Mojo." This one also originates from Chrome, but specific details have not been disclosed yet.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The release notes also mention fixed bugs and performance issues, but Microsoft does not list any specific improvements, so we will have to take the company's word for it. Last week, though, Microsoft released another small update for the Edge browser to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-fixes-broken-spellchecker-in-edge/" rel="external nofollow">address the non-working Microsoft Editor spellchecker</a> and fix other security vulnerabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft Edge will update itself automatically in the background and apply the latest updates between launches. However, you can speed things up by navigating to edge://settings/help. This will force Edge to check for available updates and apply them right now (a restart is required).
</p>

	At the start of the month, <em>Neowin</em> reported that Ubuntu 25.10 had a codename, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ubuntu-2510-questing-quokka-development-begins-release-timeline-has-been-shared/" rel="external nofollow">Questing Quokka</a>, and that development had begun. At the time, we didn’t have a clear picture of what would be included in Ubuntu 25.10, but now we have a better picture thanks to a post on Ubuntu Discourse.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The most notable thing users should look out for in the upcoming version is GNOME 49, which is still under development itself. Canonical said it will ship with updated shell extensions and a refreshed user interface, aligned with the GNOME upstream. It also announced that it will include the Loupe image viewer and Ptyxis terminal emulator to modernize the default application set.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another interesting thing to look out for in this update is accessibility improvements. Canonical says that the European Union will begin enforcing the European Accessibility Act (EAA) from June 2025, so it wants to check that all of its accessibility features are up to scratch so that it is compliant with the law.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	NVIDIA GPU owners are also set to get some love with 25.04 as Canonical has been working closely with GNOME and NVIDIA to polish the Wayland experience. Wayland is a display server that has replaced X.org in recent years. While it offers benefits and is more secure, it's still maturing, and this work between Canonical, NVIDIA, and GNOME helps with this.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Graphics-wise, users who install Ubuntu 25.04 will also benefit from VRR support in Mutter, as well as the window manager and compositor. VRR, which stands for Variable Refresh Rate, will provide you with enhanced visual smoothness if you have a compatible monitor. Gamers will notice this in particular.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the years, Canonical has been getting closer to Microsoft, and this upcoming version will further the integration between the two. With this update, there will be deeper enterprise integration with Microsoft Entra ID device registration, allowing Ubuntu devices to be registered directly with Entra ID, enabling policy enforcement
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The other planned change mentioned includes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Fully functioning desktop sessions on RISC-V architecture.
	</li>
	<li>
		Improved permission prompting for a smoother user experience.
	</li>
	<li>
		Landscape integration will arrive in the Ubuntu Desktop installer, allowing admins to auto-install config files and streamlining device enrollment and management workflows.
	</li>
	<li>
		Revamped desktop documentation that will be more accessible and discoverable.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ubuntu 25.10 is not going to be supported for long, as it’s not an LTS release. However, it will be the final release before Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which makes it pretty important, as the release cycle after will probably be focused on stabilizing previously included changes.

	Back in March, OpenAI <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/openai-announces-a-major-update-to-ai-image-generation-in-chatgpt/" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> a major upgrade to image generation in ChatGPT. Instead of relying on a separate model like DALL·E, ChatGPT began using GPT-4o's native image generation capabilities to deliver more accurate and visually appealing images based on text prompts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The GPT-4o image generation model accurately renders text and follows prompts precisely by leveraging both its knowledge base and the ongoing chat context. It also enables users to edit uploaded images or generate entirely new images using an uploaded photo as visual inspiration. This vastly improved image generation capability went viral, with over 130 million users creating more than 700 million images in just one week.

<p>
	Nearly 50 days after ChatGPT’s viral success, Microsoft is bringing the same image generation technology to Copilot users. With this update, Copilot users can now generate images with improved accuracy, better text rendering, the ability to edit generated images using text prompts, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While it's commendable that Microsoft is bringing this enhanced capability to Copilot, the company needs to accelerate its pace to remain competitive against formidable rivals like ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Gemini (Google). During its recent 50th Anniversary celebration event, Microsoft shared several <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-copilot-can-finally-remember-stuff-with-memory-vision-expands-to-windows-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">Copilot updates</a>—but many of them appear to be catching up to features already available on ChatGPT and Gemini for months.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has promised to make <a href="https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2025/04/04/your-ai-companion/" rel="external nofollow">Copilot deeply personal</a> for users. It remains to be seen how the company will deliver on that vision in the future.

	The Windows 10 KB5058379 cumulative update is triggering unexpected BitLocker recovery prompts on some devices afters it's installed and the computer restarted.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On May 13, Microsoft released the <a href="https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10-kb5058379-update-fixes-sgrmbroker-errors-in-event-viewer/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 10 KB5058379 cumulative update</a> as part of their <a href="https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-may-2025-patch-tuesday-fixes-5-exploited-zero-days-72-flaws/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">May 2025 Patch Tuesday</a> updates. This is a mandatory update as it contains security updates for vulnerabilities fixed by Microsoft, which included five actively exploited zero-day flaws.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As first spotted by <a href="https://www.windowslatest.com/2025/05/15/windows-10-kb5058379-locks-pcs-bitlocker-recovery-triggered-on-boot-bsods/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows Latest</a>, since the release of this update, some Windows users and admins have been reporting that after installing the update and restarting the device, the computer would automatically boot into the WinRE BitLocker recovery screen.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While this is not impacting all Windows devices, there have been enough reports to indicate a problem with the update on some devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We have about a half dozen laptops that experienced various intermittent issues after receiving the same KB - some require bitlocker keys to start up, others refusing to start at all," a Windows admin posted to <a href="https://old.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1klcpkl/patch_tuesday_megathread_20250513/ms7rei0/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Reddit</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"The latest KB5058379 released May 13 quality update failed in Windows 10 devices. Some devices it caused triggering bitlocker key window after restart," another person posted to the <a href="https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/may-13-kb5058379-windows-10-leads-to-corruption/58b3b179-70a0-4bd8-abae-c9b89dd9c9b9" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Microsoft forums</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Soon after, numerous people responded to the posts stating that devices in their organizations were booting into WinRE and then shown the BitLocker recovery screen.

</div>

<p>
	There are reports of devices from Lenovo, Dell, and HP being impacted by this issue, so it's unclear what particular hardware or setting conflict is occurring.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some users reported on Reddit that they could boot into Windows again by disabling Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) in the BIOS.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) is a hardware-based security feature that verifies the integrity of system components before allowing sensitive operations to run.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Microsoft has not publicly acknowledged the issue, Microsoft Support allegedly told a user that they are aware of the issues.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"I would like to inform you that we are currently experiencing a known issue with the May Month Patch <strong>KB5058379</strong>, titled <em>"BitLocker Recovery Triggered on Windows 10 devices after installing KB5058379"</em> on Windows 10 machines," an impacted user posted to <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1klcpkl/comment/ms709tp/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Reddit</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"A support ticket has already been raised with the Microsoft Product Group (PG) team, and they are actively working on a resolution."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft then shared the following steps for users to get back into Windows.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="bc_quote">
	<p>
		<strong>1. Disable Secure Boot</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			Access the system’s BIOS/Firmware settings.
		</li>
		<li>
			Locate the <strong>Secure Boot</strong> option and set it to <strong>Disabled</strong>.
		</li>
		<li>
			Save the changes and reboot the device.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>2. Disable Virtualization Technologies (if issue persists)</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			Re-enter BIOS/Firmware settings.
		</li>
		<li>
			Disable all virtualization options, including:
			<ul>
				<li>
					<strong>Intel VT-d (VTD)</strong>
				</li>
				<li>
					<strong>Intel VT-x (VTX)</strong>
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<em>Note: This action may prompt for the BitLocker recovery key, so please ensure the key is available.</em>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>3. Check Microsoft Defender System Guard Firmware Protection Status</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		<br>
		You can verify this in one of two ways:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Registry Method</strong>

			<ul>
				<li>
					Open Registry Editor (regedit).
				</li>
				<li>
					Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard\Scenarios\SystemGuard
				</li>
				<li>
					Check the Enabled DWORD value:
					<ul>
						<li>
							1 → Firmware protection is enabled
						</li>
						<li>
							0 or missing → Firmware protection is disabled or not configured
						</li>
					</ul>
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>GUI Method (if available)</strong>

			<ul>
				<li>
					Open <strong>Windows Security &gt; Device Security</strong>, and look under <strong>Core Isolation</strong> or <strong>Firmware Protection</strong>.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>4. Disable Firmware Protection via Group Policy (if restricted by policy)</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		<br>
		If firmware protection settings are hidden due to Group Policy, follow these steps:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Using Group Policy Editor</strong>

			<ul>
				<li>
					Open gpedit.msc.
				</li>
				<li>
					Navigate to: Computer Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; System &gt; Device Guard &gt; Turn On Virtualization Based Security
				</li>
				<li>
					Under <strong>Secure Launch Configuration</strong>, set the option to <strong>Disabled</strong>.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Or via Registry Editor</strong>
		</li>
		<li>
			[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard\Scenarios\SystemGuard]
		</li>
		<li>
			"Enabled"=dword:00000000
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>Important:</strong> A system restart is required for this change to take effect.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>
</div>

<p>
	It is strongly encouraged to test disabling TXT in the BIOS before disabling Secure Boot or virtualization features, as disabling them could have a significant impact on the device's security,  performance, and usability of virtualization software.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	BleepingComputer did not test these workarounds, so test them first before rolling out fixes to multiple devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	BleepingComputer contacted Microsoft to learn more about this issue and will update the story if we receive a response.
</p>

	Microsoft today <a href="https://devblogs.microsoft.com/blog/celebrating-50-million-developers-the-journey-of-visual-studio-and-visual-studio-code" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> a significant milestone for its Visual Studio product family: Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code now serve more than 50 million monthly active developers combined.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First introduced 28 years ago, Visual Studio remains a leading integrated development environment (IDE), largely due to the popularity of the Windows ecosystem. Over the years, it has evolved to support cross-platform development, cloud-native applications, game development, data science workflows, and more. It remains one of the few IDEs to include compilers, debuggers, profilers, designers, and language services out of the box.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Visual Studio by the Numbers:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			25,000+ extensions available on the Visual Studio Marketplace
		</li>
		<li>
			100,000+ developers contributing feedback, issue reports, and feature ideas
		</li>
		<li>
			Hundreds of thousands of Q&amp;As in community forums
		</li>
		<li>
			800+ community-reported issues fixed on average in each quarterly update
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	A decade ago, as Windows began losing ground to mobile platforms like iOS and Android, Microsoft introduced Visual Studio Code—a move that surprised many. Unlike its full-featured sibling, Visual Studio Code embraced a lightweight, open-source model. Rather than offering every feature out of the box, it allowed developers to customize their environment through a vast ecosystem of extensions.
</p>

<p>

		<li>
			37,000+ GitHub stars on the VS Code repository
		</li>
		<li>
			Thousands of contributors from around the world
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Amanda Silver, CVP and Head of Product for Microsoft's Developer Division and GM for Microsoft's first-party engineering systems, wrote the following regarding this milestone:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also standing at the beginning of a new era in software development. The AI coding revolution is fundamentally changing how we write code, and we’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	To celebrate the 50 million milestone, Microsoft also released <a href="https://visualstudiowallpapers.com/" rel="external nofollow">special anniversary wallpapers</a> featuring both Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code. At the upcoming Build developer conference next week, the company is expected to unveil new updates to both tools aimed at improving the developer experience even further.

	Microsoft PR is up to its neck with "Windows 12" questions, but still won't let any information slip through the cracks.
</h3>

<p>
	It's been a little over 3 years since <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11-faq" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11-faq" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft launched Windows 11</a> as the natural successor to Windows 10 (which skipped Windows 9). However, the Redmond giant struggles to garner user interest towards its latest operating system despite <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/psa-windows-10-has-entered-its-final-year-of-free-support" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/psa-windows-10-has-entered-its-final-year-of-free-support" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10's end-of-support date slated for October 14, 2025</a>.

<p>
	Users have blatantly expressed their preference for Windows 10 over Windows 11, citing <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11-system-requirements" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11-system-requirements" rel="external nofollow">stringent minimum system requirements</a> and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-experiences-leader-hates-start-menu-failing-and-pushes-for-fix" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-experiences-leader-hates-start-menu-failing-and-pushes-for-fix" rel="external nofollow">flawed design elements</a> as the major deterrents preventing them from upgrading, among an extended list of other gripes.

Compared to previous years, users are seemingly biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 11. Its market share is expected to grow even further as <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/microsoft-gives-a-subtle-reminder-about-the-upcoming-death-of-windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/microsoft-gives-a-subtle-reminder-about-the-upcoming-death-of-windows-10" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10's death looms</a>.

			There's obviously very little to pick from this comical post. However, there seems to be quite some interest building around Windows 12 and its possible development. Perhaps it could be a way for Microsoft to right some of Windows 11's perceived wrongs and find a perfect way to leverage its vast resources, especially in the AI department, to develop a killer operating system.

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Either way, multiple users indicated that they are more concerned about Microsoft cutting support for Windows 10 than Windows 12's development. Users have openly expressed their concern about the issue in a bid to get the company to backtrack on its decision.

	Windows 11's calendar flyout is frankly a joke and a massive downgrade from what we had in the Windows 10 days. While some <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/calendar-flyout-21-brings-google-calendar-and-meet-support-to-windows-11s-taskbar/" rel="external nofollow">good third-party apps can partially fix that</a>, Microsoft remains radio silent about solving the missing calendar features. Now, however, we have a new Calendar app for Windows 11 from Microsoft itself.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/see-your-day-at-a-glance-with-the-new-calendar-app/4412492" rel="external nofollow">In the official Microsoft 365 Blog</a>, the company announced a new Calendar app for Windows 11, the latest Microsoft 365 Companion. This app joins <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-launches-new-windows-11-apps-to-make-it-easier-to-find-contacts-and-files/" rel="external nofollow">the recently launched People and File Search mini-apps</a>. The goal of the Calendar companion is to show your day and schedule at a glance with a simple flyout right above the taskbar.
</p>

<p>

</p>

	<img alt="Microsoft 365 Companion apps for Windows 11" class="ipsImage" height="470" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/05/1747327935_microsoft_365_companion_app.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Click the app's icon, and Windows 11 will show a small window with your schedule, calendar, search bar, and more. This window allows you to quickly check upcoming meetings, accept invitations, join calls on Teams, participate in meeting chats, and more. The idea is simple and quite exciting, especially when you consider that Windows 11's native calendar is still criminally lackluster, with no option to create an event, view your agenda, or join a meeting.
</p>

<p>

</blockquote>

<p>
	Sadly, there is a big catch. The new Calendar companion is only available to Microsoft 365 users on Enterprise or Business editions, just like the People and File Search apps. Therefore, no luck for those with consumer versions of the subscription. Also, the Calendar app is only available to Microsoft 365 Insiders in the Beta Channel

	Opera is rolling out a new feature update for its gaming-focused browser, Opera GX. The latest release brings three "browser boosters" or productivity features, including split view, tab islands, and Bluesky integration in the browser's sidebar.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Opera GX has released its new update, providing users with a pack of enhanced tab management capabilities and improved multitasking features. The update allows for side-by-side tab viewing, easy tracing of recently visited pages, and the function to organize related tabs into collapsible groups. Additionally, the update integrates Bluesky directly into the Opera GX sidebar.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Like most modern browsers, Opera GX now lets you work with two tabs side-by-side. Grab a tab and drag it to one side of the window to enable split screen and thus reduce tab switching. However, if you have to switch between multiple pages, tab traces will make the process easier by highlighting your recent tabs. Tab hoarders, this one is for you.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The next feature is tab islands. You can group related tabs into collapsible islands or groups and personalize them with emojis for quick and easy visual identification.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, Opera GX now has Bluesky integration in its sidebar, allowing you to check on "boomer paranoia and billionaire blame shifting," as Opera puts it in its typically edgy promo video with a recap of new features, which you can check out below:

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can <a href="https://www.opera.com/gx" rel="external nofollow">download Opera GX from the official website</a>. The new features are now available for everyone, minus Tab Islands and Tab Emoji. You can access them by toggling on "Early Bird" in Opera GX Settings. Sadly, there are no new tools in this update, as developers are currently focused on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/powertoys-090-is-out-with-a-new-launcher-redesigned-color-picker-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">the recently launched Command Palette</a>, a great launcher for Windows that, arguably, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-should-integrate-these-five-powertoys-utilities-into-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">should be a native Windows 11 feature</a> alongside some other things.
</p>

<p>

	Microsoft has fixed a known issue preventing Linux from booting on dual-boot systems with Secure Boot enabled after installing the August 2024 Windows security updates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The list of affected systems includes those running client (Windows 10 and Windows 11) and server (Windows Server 2012 and later) OS versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This issue is triggered by a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) update that blocks <a href="https://github.com/rhboot/shim/blob/main/SBAT.md" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">UEFI shim bootloaders</a> vulnerable to exploits targeting the <a href="https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2112975#c0" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">CVE-2022-2601</a> GRUB2 Secure Boot bypass.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Microsoft said in the CVE-2022-2601 advisory that this SBAT update would not be delivered to devices where dual booting is detected, it also acknowledged that the dual-boot detection failed to detect some customized methods of dual-booting and applied the update anyway.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As revealed by <a href="https://community.frame.work/t/sbat-verification-error-booting-linux-after-windows-update/56354" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">many</a> <a href="https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/2947" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Linux</a> <a href="https://askubuntu.com/questions/1523353/windows-aug-13-update-broke-my-ubuntu-system" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">users</a> (running a wide range of distros, including but not limited to Ubuntu, Zorin OS, Linux Mint, and Puppy Linux), <a href="https://forum.zorin.com/t/verifying-shim-sbat-data-failed-security-policy-violation/40257/2" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">their</a> systems <a href="http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=427297" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">stopped</a> <a href="http://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=12452" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">booting</a> after installing the August 2024 Windows updates, and the SBAT update was incorrectly applied.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft <a href="https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-confirms-august-updates-break-linux-boot-in-dual-boot-systems/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">confirmed the known issue</a> following widespread reports, saying that affected users saw "Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation" errors on systems rendered unbootable.

<h2>
	Fixed after nine months
</h2>

<p>
	This week, nine months after confirming the issue, Microsoft announced that the May 2025 Patch Tuesday security updates should fix the boot problems for all affected users.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"This issue was resolved by Windows updates released May 13, 2025 [..], and later," <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-server-2022#3377msgdesc" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Redmond noted</a> in a Windows release health update. "We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The fix comes after the company <a href="https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-shares-temp-fix-for-linux-boot-issues-on-dual-boot-systems/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">shared a temporary workaround</a> in late August, weeks after the first user reports surfaced, to help revive impacted dual-boot systems, requiring them to delete the SBAT update and ensuring that future SBAT updates would no longer be installed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On September 19, it also <a href="https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/en-US/advisory/CVE-2022-2601#exploitability" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">stopped applying the problematic SBAT update</a> to the firmware automatically, advising those who want to prevent future SBAT updates in Windows to run the following command:
</p>

<pre><code>reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecureBoot\SBAT /v OptOut /d 1 /t REG_DWORD</code></pre>

<p>
	"This known issue only occurs with the installation of the August 2024 security and preview updates. The September 2024 security update and later updates do not contain the settings that caused this issue," Microsoft added.
</p>

	<img alt="Hey Copilot for Windows 11" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/05/1747241373_hey_copilot.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Following the release of Copilot Vision updates for Windows 11 Insiders, Microsoft is bringing a new feature to the Copilot app, which will be familiar to those who used Cortana on Windows 10 or Windows Phone. Now, with the latest update, Windows 11 users can wake Copilot by saying "Hey, <s>Cortana</s> Copilot!"
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new command makes it easier to start Copilot Voice without touching your device or pressing keys. In March, Microsoft updated the Copilot app to allow you to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-copilot-app-gets-a-more-convenient-way-to-talk-to-copilot/" rel="external nofollow">hold Alt + Space to launch Copilot Voice</a>, but now, you can do it with your voice.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>Copilot wake word</strong>: Windows Insiders can now invoke Copilot with the phrase “Hey, Copilot!”. This opt-in feature gives people a new way to easily start a conversation with Copilot Voice, anytime the feature is enabled, and their PC is unlocked. With this new hands-free experience, you can stay in your flow when you need answers to a question or just need someone to bounce an idea off of.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Of course, not everyone will be happy about Windows constantly listening to a wake phrase, so Microsoft is making this experience strictly opt-in. By default, the Copilot wake word is turned off, and you can turn it on in the app's Settings. Here is how to do it:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Open Copilot and tap your avatar in the bottom-left corner.
	</li>
	<li>
		Tap Settings and scroll down to the Voice mode section.
	</li>
	<li>
		Toggle the "Listen for ‘Hey, Copilot’ to start a conversation" option.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft adds that Windows 11 uses on-device processing to detect the wake word and is now sending any voice recording to the cloud when "Hey Copilot" is enabled. Upon activating Voice Mode, you will hear a chime or a greeting from Copilot, with the voice mode UI showing at the bottom of the screen. You can exit Copilot Voice by pressing X or remaining silent for a few seconds.
</p>

<p>

	Microsoft recently addressed a major bug related to Classic Outlook and Word wherein typing would lead to high CPU usage with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-details-fix-for-high-cpu-usage-performance-bug-on-windows-outlook/" rel="external nofollow">spikes of up to 50%</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another Outlook bug has hit this time again on the classic app. Microsoft has confirmed sign-in troubles with error codes "CAA2000B, 4usqa, and 49dvs." This is the third major bug in the last month to affect Classic Outlook while Microsoft tries hard to transition <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-shares-update-on-major-change-about-windows-new-outlook-enabledisable-option/" rel="external nofollow">away from it to New Outlook for Windows</a>. Last month, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-broke-classic-outlook-download-as-it-relentlessly-pushes-new-outlook-for-windows/" rel="external nofollow">downloads for Classic Outlook</a> were affected.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	About the new sign-in issue that affects both Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac, Microsoft writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Starting around May 7, 2025, some users that open <strong>classic Outlook</strong> get sign in errors like the following:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<blockquote>
		<p>
			<strong>Error</strong>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

	<blockquote>
		<p>

		</p>

		</p>

		<p>
			We couldn’t sign you in. If this error persists, contact your system administrator and provide the error code CAA2000B.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			AADSTS500014: The service principal for the resource is disabled.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</blockquote>

	<p>
		Some users that open <strong>Outlook for Mac</strong> get sign in errors like the following:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<blockquote>
		<p>
			<strong>Error</strong>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Something when wrong. [49dvs]
		</p>
	</blockquote>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft has learned that a disabled service principal "40775b29-2688-46b6-a3b5-b256bd04df9f" is causing the issue and thus re-enabling it is a way to fix these troubles.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company has provided a detailed workaround for it. The tech giant writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

	Google's Gemini AI assistant is already available on mobile, desktop, and the web. At <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-reveals-several-new-safety-features-coming-to-android-users/" rel="external nofollow">The Android Show: I/O Edition</a>, Google <a href="https://blog.google/products/android/gemini-watches-cars-tvs-xr/" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> today that Gemini is coming soon to TVs, smartwatches, cars, and XR headsets.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Guemmy Kim, Senior Director of Product and User Experience, Android, wrote the following regarding Gemini expansion:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Now, we’re expanding Gemini way beyond phones, bringing a truly smart and helpful assistant to all your devices. Whether you are on a run, in the car or even on the couch, Gemini is ready to help you.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	In the coming months, Google will bring Gemini to Wear OS smartwatches. When it becomes available, users will be able to speak naturally to get their questions answered and perform actions. For example, they can simply say, “Remember I’m using locker 43 today,” to add a reminder in Google Reminders.

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Most Android Auto systems and cars with Google built-in already have Google Assistant integration for hands-free voice commands. Later this year, Google will replace Google Assistant with Gemini, allowing users to interact using natural language. In cars, Gemini will be able to perform location searches on Google Maps, summarize incoming messages, send translated messages, and more. Gemini Live will also be available in cars, providing users with a dynamic driving companion.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Gemini is also coming to Google TVs later this year. With Gemini on TVs, users can make natural language queries like “Show me thriller movies released in 2024,” or “Show me YouTube videos explaining photosynthesis for kids.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, Gemini is also coming to Android XR. When Samsung’s Android XR headset launches later this year, Gemini will be available as an AI assistant capable of performing a wide range of tasks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As Gemini rolls out to these new platforms, it will be interesting to see how these enhanced AI capabilities reshape user experiences in cars, homes, and on the go.

	Mozilla released a small bug-fixing update for Firefox 138. Version 138.0.3 follows the release of Firefox 138.0.1 two weeks ago, and it addresses four issues across platforms. Mozilla resolved crashes when viewing websites using WebGL, HDR issues on Linux, problems with certain shortcuts, and repeated crashes caused by SVG effects.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is the changelog:

		</li>

		</li>
		<li>
			Fixed an issue where the browser could repeatedly crash when certain SVG effects (like blur or drop shadow) were applied to very small areas. (<a href="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1924241" rel="external nofollow">Bug 1924241</a>)

<p>
	Firefox 138 arrived earlier in late April with some interesting changes. The browser received a profile manager so that you can keep your personal, work, or studying stuff separate from each other, some user interface improvements for those on Windows 11, more address bar improvements, tab groups for all users worldwide, and more. You can find the complete changelog <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-gets-big-update-with-profiles-and-better-looks-on-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">here.</a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can download Firefox 138.0.3 <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/" rel="external nofollow">from the official website</a>, <a href="https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NZVDKPMR9RD" rel="external nofollow">the Microsoft Store</a> (if you are on Windows 10 and 11), or <a href="https://www.neowin.net/software/firefox-13803/" rel="external nofollow">Neowin's software page</a>. Existing installations will get to the latest version automatically, but you can speed things up by heading to <strong>Menu &gt; Help &gt; About Firefox</strong>.
