It is the end of another week, which means there's a new batch of additions to the public Microsoft 365 Roadmap. Most of the additions this week were focused on the usual Microsoft products like Copilot, Edge, Teams, and Outlook.

Let's start with Edge, because a change is coming to how the browser handles links from other apps, with an expected arrival in August. If you use different Edge profiles for work and personal stuff, you know the drill. Right now, your setting for a default profile takes priority. When this Edge update rolls out, an application like Teams or Outlook can recommend a profile, and Edge will prioritize that recommendation instead. An admin policy called "EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithAppSpecifiedProfile" will be available for organizations that want to control this behavior.

Microsoft Teams is getting a few tweaks aimed at improving day-to-day use, spread out across this summer. Arriving next month, notifications are getting a compact mode, which shrinks them down for a more minimalist look on your screen. The ability to save messages and posts is also on the way for August.

Teams will also get noise suppression for people who dial into meetings with a phone. It will automatically filter out background sounds like traffic or keyboard clatter, making calls clearer for everyone involved. This is set to roll out in September.

If you spend too much time digging through old emails, an update for Outlook planned for next month should help. A new "Browse Conversation Files" feature will gather every file shared within an email thread into a single, easy-to-access view at the top of the conversation.

Moving on to Copilot, the AI assistant will get one-click buttons to instantly generate FAQ or briefing pages from content in your Copilot Notebook. For managers, a new "scoped access" feature for the Copilot Dashboard will let them see adoption and usage stats just for their specific teams.

Microsoft is also bringing the basic Copilot chat to its Department of Defense (DoD) customers next month, with web access turned off by default to "meet US Government requirements."

Following the one for Lumma last month, Microsoft has also published a new Defender update for Windows 11/10/Server installation images this month. This update package is necessary as a Windows installation image may contain old, outdated anti-malware definitions and software binaries. Aside from better security, these updates can also provide improved performance benefits in some cases.

When a new Windows installation is set up, there may be a temporary security risk due to outdated Microsoft Defender protection in the OS installation images. This happens because the antimalware software included in these images might not be up to date. Thus Microsoft says that these updated definitions essentially help close this protection gap.

Microsoft delivered the latest security definitions for Windows images via security intelligence update version 1.431.54.0. The Defender package version is also the same.

It applies to Windows 11, Windows 10 (Enterprise, Pro, and Home editions), Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016. Microsoft writes:

 Defender package version: 1.431.54.0

This package updates the anti-malware client, anti-malware engine, and signature versions in the OS installation images to following versions:

 Engine version: 1.1.25050.2

 Security intelligence version: 1.431.54.0

From Microsoft's security bulletin, we learn that the security intelligence update version 1.431.54.0 was released this past week adds threat detections for various backdoor exploits, trojans, among others. For those wondering, the latest intelligence update is version 1.431.155.0 at the time of writing.

The Snipping Tool app is already quite a capable program for screenshots and screen recordings. Still, there is always room for improvement, and many users agree that the app needs the ability to save screen recordings as GIFs. Microsoft heard those users, and recent updates introduced the long-requested feature, allowing you to record your screen as a GIF. Here is how to do it.

Record screen as a GIF in Windows 11

Note: By the time of publishing this article, GIF support in Snipping Tool is only available to Windows Insiders. However, you can enable that feature on stable Windows 11 releases as well; here is how:

Go to store.rg-adguard.net, select ProductID in the first drop-down, paste 9MZ95KL8MR0L into the search box, and select Fast in the last drop-down. Press the checkmark button.

Find and download Microsoft.ScreenSketch_2022.2505.21.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixbundle in the list of apps. The version number could be newer, just make sure you are downloading an msixbundle file. Note that the browser will warn you about downloading a potentially harmful file.

Open the file and click Update.

Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder.

Run Command Prompt as Administrator and navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.

Type vivetool /enable /id:47081492 and press Enter.

The steps above might seem a bit tedious, but that is the only way to get GIF support in Snipping Tool without enrolling your device in the Windows Insider program. We will update the article once the feature is publicly available, so there is no need to jump through all the hoops just to make it work.

Tip: You can always roll back Snippint Tool to the latest version from the Microsoft Store by uninstalling it and downloading it again.

Now, with GIF support enabled in Snipping Tool, here is how to save a screen recording as a GIF in Windows 11:

Press Win + Shift + S, select screen recording mode and record whatever you want.

After the recording is over, Snipping Tool will open your video so that you can view, trim, or save it. At this point, all you have to do is click the GIF button in the upper-right corner.

On the next screen, select your GIF quality and click Export to save as a file or Copy to copy it to the clipboard.

And that is how you save screen recordings as GIFs in Windows 11. Note that Snipping Tool can only save GIFs for up to 30 seconds. Anything beyond that will be cut off.

You might think that Clipchamp, Windows 11's built-in video editor, is a good option when you want to save a screen recording as a GIF. However, it really sucks at that. The video duration is capped at just 15 seconds, which is even worse than the Snipping Tool, and the output resolution is hilariously low. The latter makes it impossible to distinguish any details, and all you get is a blurry, pixelated mess. No, Clipchamp is not a good option for that.

If you want to create GIFs that are longer than 30 seconds, a good option is to go with apps like ShareX, which is extremely flexible and customizable (and also free, which makes it one of our favorite must-have apps for Windows 11). Alternatively, you can record a video using the Snipping Tool and then convert it to a GIF using web-based services like Ezgif, another great free utility. Keep in mind that the larger your video resolution and the longer its duration, the bigger the final GIF size. Depending on the settings, GIFs could reach hundreds of megabytes, so you have to set your expectations correctly (and so do the settings, too).

This week saw the long-awaited release of KDE Plasma 6.4, bringing better window management and a whole lot of color management features. Apart from the release of 6.4, the KDE team was able to get other work done, and this was all outlined in the latest issue of This Week in Plasma, which details what is coming down the pipe for future versions.

Looking ahead to Plasma 6.5, the developers are making some notable changes to improve performance and general usability. To prevent its database from growing endlessly and causing performance problems over time, the Activity Manager service will now only store the last four months of your history by default.

The Emoji selector app is also getting a much-needed redesign that makes the window more compact and moves the sidebar button to the header for a cleaner look.

Other little details for 6.5 are being polished up too. The unpopular vertical line separating the date and time on the horizontal Digital Clock widget is gone; if you want it back, you can add it yourself with a custom date format. The "Add New" button has also been moved to the top toolbar in the Shortcuts page within Settings, freeing up some valuable screen real estate.

The devs also reduced the minimum size of custom tiling tiles, a small but significant fix for anyone with an ultrawide monitor. In addition to that, the Networks widget's captive portal banner now uses inline header styling, so it doesn't look like a bunch of frames stacked inside each other anymore.

Of course, before we get to 6.5, the current release needs some attention. Plasma 6.4's first bug fix release, 6.4.1, addresses issues like broken item selection in the Folder View widget and a bug that could cause the system to lock or suspend faster than intended. Keyboard navigation in list views in Discover feels smoother now, and text is easier to read in certain list items in KRunner. The devs also cleaned up how list items look when you press or click them in Discover.

6.4.1 also fixes a bug where the clipboard history popup would fail to select the top item, and makes the Earth Science Picture of The Day wallpaper plugin work again after its data source changed. Here's the full list of fixes:

Fixed several issues in the Folder View widget that caused selecting or opening items to not work when using certain non-default view settings, when the view was scrollable, or when using a touchscreen.

Fixed a bug in the Meta+V clipboard popup that sometimes failed to pre-select the top-most item.

The Clipboard settings window’s shortcuts page no longer shows columns for local shortcuts that don’t do anything, since the clipboard is global in scope.

Fixed the Earth Science Picture of the Day wallpaper plugin after the source data changed formatting again.

Made a few fixes to the “Missing Backends” section of Discover’s settings window that kept it from working properly.

Fixed a bug that prevented direct scan-out (and its performance benefits) from activating on rotated screens.

Fixed an issue where the system could lock or suspend sooner than expected after an app stopped blocking those actions.

Installing a new wallpaper plugin no longer causes the plugin list combobox to appear blank.

The team even went back to squash some bugs in the older 6.3.6, tackling an issue that could cause keyboard shortcuts to get lost during a system upgrade and fixing an overflow bug with KRunner's faded completion text. Plasma 6.4.1 is set to arrive on June 24th, with 6.3.6 following on July 8th.

Good news: more Control Panel bits are making their way to the Settings app, giving you fewer reasons to use the legacy UI that Microsoft buried deep inside its operating system. This time, the company is migrating certain clock-related settings, giving them a more modern look in the Settings app.

The upgraded Settings app now lets you enable additional clocks in the notification center and adjust AM/PM indicators. These features work the same as they do in the legacy Control Panel: you can enable up to two additional clocks for two extra time zones and name them as you wish. Thanks to the redesign, the UI for setting up additional clocks supports dark and light themes, bigger UI elements, and improved accessibility.

If you are trying to find a certain file in your OneDrive storage, but the service just won't give you the stuff you need, you are likely experiencing an issue that Microsoft has just confirmed. The company updated the official OneDrive documentation with a list of known bugs to clarify that the service currently exhibits problems with the search functionality.

According to Microsoft, the bug affects four platforms: Windows, iOS, Android, and Web (macOS users are spared). The company says that affected users see black search results, and the storage does not return files that certainly exist (do not blame Microsoft if OneDrive cannot find the file you accidentally deleted or renamed). Fortunately, files are intact—it is just the search that cannot find them and present them to you.

Another good thing is that the issue does not appear to affect 100% of users. Microsoft says only "a subset of users" experience the bug. Neowin checked a bunch of systems with personal and work OneDrive accounts, and all of them found the requested files without any issues.

Unfortunately, if you are affected, there is nothing you can do at this point. Microsoft made it clear that there are no workarounds. Therefore, you will have to manually scavenge your OneDrive folders (they can now be colored!) to search for the needed file. Microsoft added that it understands how disruptive this bug could be, and it is "working with urgency" to resolve the bug as quickly as possible.

In other news about OneDrive frustration, Microsoft recently locked out a user who was attempting to move a bunch of important data from old hard drives to OneDrive. Eighteen attempts to resolve the issue led to nothing but automated replies from Microsoft. Microsoft's new Windows 11 Release Preview build gives us a good look at what to expect for next month's feature drop.

Microsoft is gearing up to ship a new wave of features for Windows 11 in the coming weeks as the company continues its "continuous innovation" effort that aims to bring new experiences to Windows users on a regular basis.

The update includes improvements to the Taskbar, File Explorer, Share UI, and more.

With this update, the Taskbar now includes dynamically resizing icons that will shrink when the Taskbar becomes full, which is handy for those on smaller screens. The indicator pill that sits underneath open apps in the Taskbar is now wider and more visible, too.

Microsoft is also improving the Windows Share experience, with a new option that lets you choose how compressed an image is when sharing it. You can choose between high, medium, and low quality.

Other improvements include better performance when extracting archive files, which should improve copy times when moving files out from a .7z or .RAR archive, and there's also a new PC migration experience that makes moving between two Windows PCs easier.

Here's the full list of changes and new features that are now in testing and are expected to begin rolling out more broadly in July:

[App defaults] New! We are rolling out some small changes in the EEA region for default browsers via the Set default button in Settings > Apps > Default apps:

Additional file and link types will be set for the new default browser, if it registers them.

The new default browser will be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu unless you choose not to pin it by clearing the checkboxes.

There is now a separate one-click button for browsers to change your .pdf default, if the browser registers for the .pdf file type.

New! The taskbar now resizes icons to fit more apps when space runs low, keeping everything visible and easy to access. You can adjust how icons appear in settings—reduce icon size only when the taskbar is full (default), keep icons at their original size at all times by selecting Never, or use smaller icons all the time by selecting Always. To change this setting, right-click an empty area on the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand the Taskbar behaviors section, and choose your preference under Show smaller taskbar buttons.

New! In addition to the new grouping of the Accessibility menu in Quick settings, there are text descriptions for the assistive technologies like Narrator, Voice access, and more for easier identification and learning.

New! Adjusted the indicator (pill) under taskbar apps to make it wider and more visible.

New! When you share links or web content using the Windows share window, you will see a visual preview for that content.

New! In the Windows share window, you can select a compression level—High, Medium, or Low Quality—when editing and sharing images, instead of selecting from a 0–100 scale.

[PC Migration] We’re beginning the rollout of a new PC-to-PC migration experience in Windows. You’ll start to see the landing and the pairing page in the Windows Backup app, giving you a first look at what’s coming. In the full experience, you will be able to transfer your files and settings from your old PC to the new one during the PC setup process. Support during the PC setup will be available in a future update. We are releasing in phases for a smooth experience and will provide more details soon.

[File Explorer] Improved: Performance has been enhanced when extracting archive files – this will particularly help in the case of copy pasting large numbers of files out of large 7z or .rar archives.

New! The Screen Curtain feature in Narrator helps protect your privacy and improve focus by blacking out the screen while Narrator reads content aloud. This is especially helpful in public or shared spaces, where you can work with sensitive information without others seeing your screen. To turn on Narrator, press Ctrl + Windows + Enter. Then press Caps Lock + Ctrl + C to enable Screen Curtain. While it’s on, you can use Narrator as usual with the screen hidden. Press Caps Lock + Ctrl + C again to turn it off.

New! Narrator makes it easier to discover and learn about its features directly within the experience. Whether you’re new or exploring advanced options, Narrator will guide you through the latest updates using a series of steps and prompts that explain each new feature and change.

New! You can now use voice access to navigate, dictate, and interact with Windows using voice commands in Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

New! You can add custom words to the dictionary in voice access. The feature will be available in all the currently supported voice access languages.

New! The Settings homepage on PCs managed by IT administrators now includes cards tailored for enterprise use. These include familiar options like “Recommended settings” and “Bluetooth devices,” along with two cards for device info and accessibility preferences. If a user signs in with both a work or school account and a Microsoft account, an additional accounts card appears to show both account types.

New! Added the country or region selected during device setup under Settings > Time & language > Language & region.

These features are available for testing now, and if you want to get them early, just sign up for Microsoft's Windows Insider Release Preview Channel. Otherwise, you can wait until July 8 for general availability.

Windows' volume and brightness indicators have been a running joke among PC users for many years. Microsoft introduced touch-friendly sliders with the release of Windows 8 in 2012, but they remained unchanged for nearly a decade. Even the initial Windows 11 release in 2021 shipped with those unchanged sliders, sparking discontent among users.

However, later, Microsoft finally redesigned the volume and brightness indicator, aligning it with the rest of Windows 11's design. At long last, Windows 11 could breathe a sigh of relief. Now, it looks like Microsoft is not done with this area. Users discovered that Windows 11 preview builds have a hidden personalization feature that lets you change where those flyouts appear on the screen.

@phantomofearth shared the discovery on X, showing how Windows 11 will soon let you select where on-screen indicators appear (volume, brightness, virtual desktops, camera, and more). You will be able to choose between the bottom center (current version), the top left, or the top center. For reference, Windows 10 and 8/8.1 have their own on-screen indicators in the top-left corner of the screen. If you miss that behavior, this new feature will soon let you make things a bit old-school.

The ability to change the position of on-screen indicators will be available in Settings > System > Notifications > Position of on-screen indicators. Microsoft has not announced this feature yet, so it is possible that more changes will show up in the official announcement. What Microsoft confirmed, though, is a new adaptive power saver mode for tablets and laptops. It is coming to Windows Insiders soon.

Microsoft’s parental controls have been wreaking havoc with Chrome for more than two weeks.

Earlier this month, Microsoft’s Family Safety feature, primarily used by parents and schools as a set of parental controls and filters, started randomly blocking Google’s Chrome browser from opening on Windows. The first reports surfaced on June 3rd, with some Chrome users noticing the browser kept closing or wouldn’t open.

Microsoft has introduced a bug into Family Safety that specifically targets the Chrome browser and prevents it from functioning on Windows. “Our team has investigated these reports and determined the cause of this behavior,” says Chrome support manager Ellen T. “For some users, Chrome is unable to run when Microsoft Family Safety is enabled.”

Other browsers like Firefox or Opera appear to be unaffected, and some users have even found that renaming Chrome.exe to Chrome1.exe works around this issue. Schools or parents who have enabled Family Safety as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription can also disable the “filter inappropriate websites” setting in Family Safety to get Chrome up and running again, but this does leave children able to access any website.

It’s unclear when Microsoft will fix the issue, which has been ongoing for more than two weeks. We reached out to Microsoft to comment on this problem earlier this week, but at the time of publication, the company hasn’t responded.

“We’ve not heard anything from Microsoft about a fix being rolled out,” wrote a Chromium engineer in a bug tracking thread on June 10th. “They have provided guidance to users who contact them about how to get Chrome working again, but I wouldn’t think that would have a large effect.”

Microsoft has a habit of doing weird things on Windows to steer people away from using Chrome. While this Family Safety issue is likely an innocent bug, Microsoft has used prompts, fake AI answers, malware-like popups, and even a poll injected on Google’s Chrome download page to try and sway people to switch to its Edge browser. Earlier this year, Microsoft even used Bing to trick people into thinking they were on Google.

Do we even need it?

A few days ago, I shared my viewpoint regarding how Microsoft hasn't been able to convince me to migrate to Windows 11 as my sole daily driver, despite the OS being available for roughly four years. Within that piece, I highlighted the fact that even though the Start menu has been completely revamped in the latest version of Windows, it's not something that I use regularly.

And that got me thinking: is the Start menu really a crucial piece of my Windows experience? I get it, I know that the Start menu is an iconic Windows element that has existed in the operating system for as long as many of us can remember. And yet, I can't really tell you about the last time I actually used the Start menu.

The reason for italicizing the word "used" above is that while the Start menu can be launched when you click on the Windows icon in the Taskbar or the Windows key, I am not counting that as actual usage for the purpose of this piece. This is because I do launch the Start menu several times a day, I actually use it to get to Windows Search. I don't actually use the list of apps, app folders, and recently opened files. I simply tap the Windows key and start typing the search query for the item that I am looking for.

For example, if I want to open Power BI, I don't open the Start menu and find the pinned app. I just tap on the Windows key and start typing "Po..." and quickly hit Enter as soon as the right option comes up, which is usually after a couple of keystrokes. Similarly, if I want to open "Gifts.xlsx", I don't open Excel from the Start menu or even peruse my list of recently opened files, I just start typing "Gi..." and press Enter.

I feel like this is a much faster experience and you don't need to rely on muscle memory to find the item that you are looking for. And as your list of installed software grows, it only becomes more tedious to keep track of where you pinned an app or the folder that you kept it in. Windows Search gets rid of that problem completely.

Additionally, the Start menu detracts me from whatever else I may be focusing on in parallel. If I am using Word and now want to open PowerPoint, I would probably get distracted by the Start menu as I launch it and try to locate the PowerPoint icon. Instead, I can just get to PowerPoint within a few keystrokes without even realizing the effort involved.

I'd also like to highlight that I am not inherently against the idea of pinning stuff that you use frequently or recently, but I do think that the Taskbar and Desktop view already solves that problem to some extent. Right now, my Taskbar contains my most used software, while my desktop contains other secondary software and files. I understand that people have their fair share of complaints against Windows Search, but it works quite well for my use-cases.

As it currently stands, my actual usage of the Start menu is nil. And although this popular Windows UX is always the subject of debate each time Microsoft makes even a minor change to it, I simply couldn't care less. That said, while the Start menu in its traditional use is dead to me, I am not sure how many people actively utilize this UX. Any evidence I have is purely anecdotal, but I would be very interested in seeing the telemetry that Microsoft tracks regarding its usage.

Seeing how frequently Microsoft makes changes to the Start menu and the ensuing debate that follows, I feel like I am in the minority. But I just can't imagine opening the Start menu and then relying on muscle memory or a fixed grid of icons to get to the app I need, when I can do more with a couple of keystrokes.

Last month, we learned that Microsoft is making major changes to the development of hardware drivers in Windows. This included the retirement of Windows Metadata and Internet Services (WMIS), along with the process for pre-production driver signing. Now, the Redmond tech firm has informed partners that it will be getting rid of old drivers in Windows Update.

In what is being described as a "strategic" move to improve the security posture and compatibility of Windows, Microsoft has announced that it will be performing a cleanup of legacy drivers that are still being delivered through Windows Update. Right now, the first phase only targets drivers that already have modern replacements present in Windows Update.

As a part of its cleanup process, Microsoft will expire legacy drivers so that it is not offered to any system. This expiration involves removing audience segments in the Hardware Development Center. Partners can still republish a driver that was deemed as legacy by Microsoft, but the firm may require a justification. Once the Redmond tech giant completes its first phase of this cleanup, it will give partners a six-month grace period to share any concerns. However, if no concerns are brought forward, the drivers will be permanently eradicated from Windows Update.

Microsoft has emphasized that this will be a regular activity moving forward and while the current phase only targets legacy drivers with newer replacements, the next phases may expand the scope of this cleanup and remove other drivers too. That said, each time the company takes a step in this direction, it will inform partners so that there is transparency between both parties.

Microsoft believes that this move will help improve the security posture of Windows and ensure that an optimized set of drivers is offered to end-users. The firm has asked partners to review their drivers in Hardware Program so that there are no unexpected surprises during this cleanup process.

Microsoft has released a new Release Preview build for Windows 11 Insiders. The new build, 26100.4482, under KB5060829, improves the performance of the File Explorer in case of extracting archives. The company says "has been enhanced when extracting archive files" and that the improvement will mainly be felt "in the case of copy pasting large numbers of files out of large 7z or .rar archives."

Aside from File Explorer, Microsoft says that users can also expect a snappier Search. Microsoft notes that earlier the feature would respond "very slowly—the Search Box can take over 10 seconds to load before you can use it."

Besides those, Taskbar has also received an improvement as it will better use the available real estate space more effectively with new ability to resize icons so more apps can fit. The build also brings new PC Migration tool. Start menu pins have also changed

You can view the full changelog below:

	Gradual rollout

[App defaults] New! We are rolling out some small changes in the EEA region for default browsers via the Set default button in Settings > Apps > Default apps:

Additional file and link types will be set for the new default browser, if it registers them.

The new default browser will be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu unless you choose not to pin it by clearing the checkboxes.

There is now a separate one-click button for browsers to change your .pdf default, if the browser registers for the .pdf file type.

[Start menu] New! For Admins, the Configure Start Pins policy now includes an option to apply Start menu pins only once. This means users will receive the admin Start menu pins on their first sign-in (day 0), but afterward, they can personalize their pinned layout, and those changes will be retained. This policy can also be applied through group policy, in addition to the existing configuration service provider (CSP) method.

 [Taskbar & System Tray]

Fixed: Clicking the top third of the buttons in the top row doesn’t work to enable or disable the button.

Fixed: WIN + CTRL + Number doesn’t work anymore for switching windows of an open app in the taskbar

Fixed: When using taskbar in Windows, the media controls that appear in the preview windows for apps might unexpectedly flicker.

 [Windows Share]

 Narrator

 [Voice Access]

New! You can now use voice access to navigate, dictate, and interact with Windows using voice commands in Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

New! You can add custom words to the dictionary in voice access. The feature will be available in all the currently supported voice access languages.

 [Settings]

Fixed: The storage card in Settings > System > About shows an incorrect or unreadable character instead of the proper disk size.

 [Windowing]

Fixed: When you ALT + Tab out of a full screen game, other windows (like Windows Terminal might stop responding.

Fixed: An underlying issue might lead to unexpected window size and position changes after sleep/resume for some devices.

Fixed: Explorer.exe might stop working unexpectedly when dragging a window if window snapping is enabled.

[Scripting] Fixed: Running a script on a remote SMB share might take an unexpectedly long time if the share was an older Windows Server version like Windows Server 2019.

 [Graphics]

Improved: Made some underlying changes to help improve display related user experiences, including reducing screen flashing in some display configuration transitions and removing unnecessary display resets which was happening in some cases.

Fixed: Certain displays might be unexpectedly green.

Fixed: If User Account Control (UAC) is set to Always Notify and the button under Settings > System > Display for color calibration is selected for your display and canceled, Settings will stop responding.

[Color Filters] Improved: Adjusted the location of the intensity and color boost sliders under Settings > Accessibility > Color Filters, so the color previews at the top of the page are visible while adjusting the sliders.

[Storage optimization] Fixed: An issue that prevented unused language packs and Feature on Demand packages from being fully removed, which led to unnecessary storage use and longer Windows Update installation times.

Last month, news emerged about the Snipping Tool app, Windows 11's default screenshot and screen-recording tool, getting a much-needed feature—the ability to save screen recordings as GIFs. Today, Microsoft officially announced this capability, and it is rolling out to Windows 11 insiders in the Dev and Canary Channels. In case you missed it, the latter received a new build with context menu improvements, new accessibility features, and more.

GIF export in Snipping Tool works simply: Start screen recording as usual, then click the GIF button in the upper-right corner of the editor once you've finished. After that, the app will ask you to specify GIF quality and display your GIF's size info: duration, resolution, and FPS. Now, all it takes is pressing Export (save as a file) or Copy (copy to clipboard).

Note that as of right now, GIF export is limited to 30-second videos or less. When exporting longer videos, the app will save only the first 30 seconds of the recording.

Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 preview build for Canary Channel Insiders. Build 27881 is now available for download with improved voice typing, speech recap in Narrator, context menu changes, some minor taskbar enhancements, and more.

With today's release, voice typing received a new toggle that lets you turn off or on profanity filtering. This will let you say bad words without Windows 11 censoring them (or vice versa). You can find it by pressing Win + H and clicking the Settings icon > Filter Profanity.

Narrator now has a new "Speech Recap" feature, which lets you access a transcript of everything that Narrator has spoken. To access this feature, press Narrator Key + Alt + X. You will find the last 500 strings of spoken content. If needed, you can export the transcript by pressing the Narrator key + Ctrl + X (copy to clipboard).

Other changes in build 27881 include renewed security certificates, a new needy state pill on the taskbar (apps that require your attention), a reworked accessibility flyout with feature categories, a built-in image editor for the Share UI, and the ability to share files directly to apps that support Windows sharing (Right Click > Share with).

Here is the list of fixes:

	[General]

Fixed an issue for Insiders on the previous build causing some of the text in Windows to not be using the correct characters, causing nonsense to display in places like Task Manager and more. This impacted characters outside of A-Z – including Chinese and accented characters in German and Polish.

Fixed an issue where booting into safe mode wasn’t working, with a message saying “Something happened and your PIN isn’t available” for some people.

	[File Explorer]

Fixed an issue where File Explorer would crash when tapping the View button with touch.

	[Start menu]

Fixed an issue which was causing Start menu to crash on launch for some Insiders in the last few flights.

	[Taskbar]

Fixed an underlying issue which was causing keyboard focus to get set to widgets in the taskbar on login, which could make widgets unexpectedly invoke.

Fixed an issue which could cause the media controls in the preview windows for apps in the taskbar (that support it) to flicker.

Fixed an issue where when using Tab and Shift + Tab to move keyboard focus around the taskbar, if you went backwards at least once you could get keyboard focus stuck on the taskbar frame, leading some screen readers to just say “pane”.

Fixed an issue where WIN + CTRL + wasn’t working to cycle between windows of open apps for that position on the taskbar.

	[Input]

Fixed an issue where typing Japanese with the touch keyboard might stop working after switching to typing with an English keyboard and back.

Fixed an issue where voice typing wouldn’t start from the touch keyboard when using the Chinese (Simplified) narrow layout.

Fixed an issue where when using the Symbols section of the touch keyboard, pressing the key to change pages might unexpectedly insert a character into password fields.

	[Settings]

Fixed an issue where you couldn’t switch active hours from manually to automatic in Windows Update.

Adjusted the location of the intensity and color boost sliders under Settings > Accessibility > Color Filters, so the color previews at the top of the page are visible while adjusting the sliders.

	[Voice access]

Fixed an issue which was causing voice access crashes when using Spanish.

	[Other]

Fixed an issue where if you clean installed Windows using the installation media, it would unexpectedly generate an empty Windows.old folder when you were done.

Made another fix for Insiders unexpectedly seeing an Administrative Templates error message when opening Group Policy Editor.

Here is the list of known bugs:

	[General]

[IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] If you are joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel or retail, you will lose Windows Hello pin and biometrics to sign into your PC with error 0xd0000225 and error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available”. You should be able to re-create your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN”.

We’re working on the fix for an underlying issue where the taskbar is unexpectedly not showing acrylic material after upgrading to the latest Canary builds. This is impacting a few other scenarios, leading to unexpected black or white in some UI.

[NEW] The “Reset this PC” option under Settings > System > Recovery will not work after upgrading to Build 27881. You can still use the “Go back” option to roll back to the previous build or download the ISO for Build 27881 here to reinstall Windows.

	[Settings]

[NEW] We’re investigating an issue in this build which may cause Settings to crash when opening microphone properties under Settings > System > Sound.

Microsoft has been slowly lifting several upgrade blocks for Windows 11 version 24H2, the 2024 feature update for Windows 11. For example, the most recent one was related to browser compatibility, and it was removed last month. This safeguard hold was lifted about a week after the company released the update such that it was available for download to everyone.

However, there are still plenty of other compatibility blocks that are still in place. These include ones for Dirac Audio, sprotect SYS driver conflict, among others.

Meanwhile, it looks like there is also an upgrade block on certain Western Digital SSDs that prevents them from getting the feature update. While Microsoft, or at least Windows 11, seems to be blocking the upgrade, the issue is not documented on the tech giant's health dashboard website alongside the other entries.

The typical "What needs your attention" message box pops up indicating that the WD NMVe SSD in the user's system is the issue. It says:

 Western Digital NVMe disk

Your PC has a hardware that isn't ready for this version of Windows. Windows Update will automatically offer you this version of Windows once the issue has been resolved.

Thus, Windows thinks the WD drive in question is not compatible with the Windows 11 2024 update. As it turns out, the problem, one related to Host Memory Buffer (HMB), has seemingly already been fixed back in October 2024 with a new firmware update.

However, Windows does not seem to deliver the correct link to download the update, which means users may still be unable to download Windows 11 24H2 on their PCs.

A Reddit user found out that they were able to bypass the block by manually downloading the firmware from the SanDisk official support page for the corresponding drive model. They write:

I attempted to install Windows 11, version 24H2 and i had a conflicting error on my internal drive, which to note is serving as additional internal storage for my pc. Windows provides a link for you to download the latest firmware for your WD_BLACK SN770 2 TB, but from the Western Digital point of view, it is not clear as to how to update your firmware.

After hours of frustration I have discovered that 'SanDisk Dashboard' is the actual software for maintaining the firmware on your WD_BLACK SN770 2 TB.

Thus, in case you happen to own such a disk, make sure to head over to the SanDisk Dashboard website here. It provides support for the following models: WD Green, Blue, Red, WD_BLACK, SanDisk SSD PLUS M.2, Extreme M.2, Extreme Pro M.2, Ultra 3D. It's no secret that Microsoft is trying to get as many people to use Copilot as possible. This is being done through various means, including integration with OneNote, Defender, Windows, and more. Microsoft Excel is the most popular spreadsheet software out there, so it makes sense that the Redmond tech firm would integrate and build upon the capabilities of Copilot in this tool too. Now, the company has implemented a major upgrade in this integration.

In a blog post, Microsoft has made Copilot smarter in terms of context awareness in Excel. This makes the AI assistant more useful when asking questions about your data in nautral language queries. Previously, Copilot would only make inferences based on the cell that you have selected, and it typically worked quite well in this scenario. However, Microsoft has realized that workbooks and sheets have become more complex, which means that Copilot needs to be smarter too.

This means that you no longer need to select relevant data when asking queries about it, you can simply ask questions such as "Show me insights about the data I was just analyzing" and "Sort the table in the top-right", and Copilot should just work.

Microsoft says that this major upgrade in Copilot is due to combining cell signals with chat history in order to make inferences. It also supports data ranges, which means that it can serve as the foundation for even broader context in future updates.

In order to get customers to trust the inferences that Copilot is making, Microsoft will highlight the data that the AI assistant is using. This enables customers to further refine the dataset that Copilot is using so that they can get the most accurate responses.

Smart context awareness is available on the web and the following versions of desktop:

 Windows: Version 2505 (Build 18623.20058)

 Mac: Version 16.95 (Build 2506.3090)

Meanwhile, the visual highlighting feature is also available on the web and the desktop versions mentioned below:

 Windows: Version 2505 (Build 18705.20000)

 Mac: Version 16.96 (Build 2506.4070)

Microsoft has requested customers to provide feedback through the thumbs up/down icons present at the bottom of the Copilot response cards.

Just a few months after passing Windows 10 in market share in the United States, Windows 11 will pass its predecessor in global market share.

Microsoft's newer operating system has gained steadily on its predecessor, but Windows 11 saw a large jump over the last month.

According to StatCounter, Windows 11 jumped from 43.22 percent of the Windows market share in May to 47.73 percent in June. That increase seems to have come largely at the expense of Windows 10's market share, which fell from 53.19 percent to 48.92 percent over the same period.

Assuming the trend continues, Windows 11 will pass Windows 10 in market share within the next month or so.

Note that those figures are for market share of Windows versions, not desktops overall. All versions of Windows combined for 70.6 percent of the global desktop market share in June. Windows has remained relatively flat in terms of total desktop market share over the last year.

Microsoft has aggressively pushed people toward Windows 11 recently. The tech giant has shown full-screen prompts, released an ad campaign, and is working on a tool to make it easy to migrate data and settings from a Windows 10 PC to one running Windows 11.

The push is in preparation for Windows 10 reaching end of support. The cutoff date for that operating system's support is October 14, 2025. After that date, PCs running Windows 10 will no longer receive support or updates unless people pay extra.

It's normal to see the general public take time to adopt a new operating system. But the shift from Windows 10 to Windows 11 has proven more dramatic than previous upgrade paths.

As a result, many people will have to run an unsupported version of Windows, pay for support, buy a new computer, or switch to another operating system, such as ChromeOS or Linux.

Windows 11 has some features and capabilities that are not present on Windows 10, but those have been available for quite some time. The sudden jump in Windows 11 market share is likely due to the impending end of Windows 10 support.

Windows 11 is getting a redesigned Start menu. This is a big deal for the soon-to-be-four-year-old operating system and its highly controversial design bits. After years of slow to no progress in the Start menu area, Microsoft is finally delivering a much better variant with many new features and plenty of feedback addressed.

How much has been addressed? In 2023, we posted a list of the "Top 10 Start menu features and changes Windows 11 users want," so it is now time to compare that to the new Start menu.

Note: The new Start menu is not yet publicly available. Microsoft is testing it in Windows 11 preview builds from the Dev and Beta Channels, and you can check out this article to learn how to enable it so that you can try it yourself.

	1. Allow users to turn off the "Recommended" section - Delivered (17K+ upvotes)

Round of applause for Microsoft, everyone, as the company actually delivered the most requested Start menu feature. The redesigned variant lets you turn off the Recommended section and hide it altogether so that it does not waste any space.

 Recommended section, begone!

	2. More customization options - Nope (5.4K+ upvotes)

Although Microsoft now allows turning off the Recommended section and switching between three views for the All apps list, the menu remains quite restricted when it comes to personalization, so if you want true customization, Windhawk and the Start menu styler mod are here for you, allowing some seriously cool Start menu designs, as one on the screenshot below:

	3. Allow resizing the Start menu - Sort of delivered (3.8K+ upvotes)

You still cannot change the size of the Start menu manually like you could in Windows 10. However, the menu is now more adaptive, which means you will see more content if you have a bigger screen. Still, I would like to have the ability to make the menu bigger, so this one remains standing.

	4. Go back to the Windows 10-style Start menu - Nope (3.4K+ upvotes)

Microsoft is not going back to the Windows 10 Start menu, so if you are one of the 3,400+ people who upvoted this in Feedback Hub, your best course of action is to install a third-party Start menu or just stick to Windows 10.

	5. Use Grid view for the All apps list - Delivered (1.5K+ upvotes)

Another popular request was delivered fully. I would even say that Microsoft over delivered it. Instead of just killing the standard list view in favor of grid view, Microsoft let users decide what kind of view they want. You can stick to the classic list, switch over to grid view, or enjoy a categorized view. Again, well done!

	6. Display jump lists when right-clicking pinned apps - Needs fixing (1K+ upvotes)

Microsoft has already fixed this problem, and you can access jump lists and recent files by right-clicking pinned applications in the current Start menu version. However, turning off the Recommended section also turns off jump lists on the Start menu and taskbar for some reason. A very frustrating design for those who use jump lists and do not want the Recommended section. This needs fixing.

Microsoft punishes you with no jump lists if you dare to turn off "Recommended." Why?

	7. Make the Start menu open on the All apps list by default - Delivered (1K+ upvotes)

The new Start menu ticks this box as well. There is no need to click "All apps" when you open the Start menu. It now features a single-view user interface with the list of all apps right below your pins and recommendations. All you need to do is start scrolling.

	8. Add a full-screen Start menu - Nope (1K+ upvotes)

Even though Microsoft "has got this," nothing indicates that the company plans to reintroduce a full-screen Start menu from the days of Windows 10 and Windows 8. A shame, if you ask me. Interestingly, it appears that Microsoft considered a full-screen Start menu for Windows 11. The company recently showed some of the prototypes it considered implementing, including a scrollable full-screen menu.

	9. Bring back live tiles - Nope (1K+ upvotes)

Tiles are no longer alive. They are as dead as Windows Phone, and there is no return.

	10. Make the Start menu button follow the system accent color - Nope (760+ upvotes)

Microsoft "has got this," but the blue Start button is here to stay.

We've taken a few trips down memory lane this week, even enjoying nostalgic treats from Microsoft itself. For example, Apple launched its "Liquid Glass" UI design as part of an iOS 26 overhaul at WWDC 2025, and Windows fans were quick to indicate that it was almost a bootleg version of Microsoft's Aero Glass from Windows Vista in 2006.

Now, Microsoft veteran Raymond Chen has expanded on a comical tale about a time the company's application compatibility check for Windows 95 crashed a cash register at Egghead Software's store.

But to get the full gist of the story, we have to rewind even further to 2005, when Chen discussed Windows 95's development and the importance of the operating system's app compatibility in his Old New Thing series.

Interestingly, the engineer revealed that Windows 95's lead developer headed down to Egghead Software with his pickup truck to buy one copy of every single PC program in the store ().

The lead developer dropped the PC programs he'd bought at Egghead in Microsoft's cafeteria and asked every Windows 95 team member to pick two programs that they'd run application compatibility tests on.

	According to Chen:

"The ground rules were that you had to install and run the program, use it like a normal end user, and file a bug against everything that doesn’t work right, even the minor stuff. (Of course, you had to provide the program to the person investigating the bug upon request.)"

"In exchange for taking responsibility for ensuring that Windows 95 was compatible with your adopted programs, you got to keep them after Windows 95 shipped. If you did a good job with your two, you could come back for more."

But perhaps more interestingly, the engineer recently revealed that the Windows 95 team lead's idea to check the operating system's app compatibility with a ton of PC programs almost didn't work.

He narrowed down the issue to a limitation that crashed the cash register at the Egghead Software store whenever a purchase exceeded $10,000. The presumption was that anyone who wanted to buy products exceeding $10,000 would use a purchase order instead.

However, the executive found a workaround for the setback, breaking his order into smaller chunks while ensuring that they didn't exceed the dollar limit. Problem solved.

Back in March earlier this year, a new redesigned Microsoft Account sign-in was released with the intention to make it "more modern, simple, and secure." Microsoft also probably hopes that the revamp will help win some hearts since many dislike the Microsoft Account (MSA) quite a bit as they are forced to use the service during Windows 11 installation.

Yes, signing in to the MSA is one of the several system requirements for Windows 11, and it is also the recommended way and it clearly does not like it when users opt for a Local account instead.

Microsoft often highlights the benefits of an MSA as it points out the unified access users get across devices and services like Windows, Office, OneDrive, and Xbox, which can help in synchronization of files and settings for convenience.

A Microsoft Account also stores the BitLocker encryption key which is crucial thing that all users who have encryption need to store securely.

Back in May this year, we covered reports of users losing their data as a consequence of BitLocker key loss, and this is a real danger for many, given that Microsoft now enables automatic BitLocker encryption on Windows 11 24H2, that most users won't even be aware of.

So in the case of loss of access to a Microsoft Account, an affected user can suddenly find that they have lost all their data and there may be no way to recover it according to Microsoft's terms.

Such account lock-outs can happen as a Reddit user deus03690 found out. The frustrated user claims that Microsoft apparently "randomly" locked their account when they were dealing with multiple data drives. They explain:

"Microsoft randomly locked my account after I moved 30 years' worth of irreplaceable photos and work to OneDrive. I was consolidating data from multiple old drives before a major move—drives I had to discard due to space and relocation constraints. The plan was simple: upload to OneDrive, then transfer to a new drive later.

Instead, Microsoft suspended my account without warning, reason, or any legitimate recourse. I've submitted the compliance form 18 times—eighteen—and each time I get an automated response that leads nowhere. No human contact. No actual help. Just canned emails and radio silence."

The user has good reason to be annoyed and frustrated at this, Microsoft's own official guidance about the Account lock says: "If you tried to sign in to your account and received a message that it's been locked, it's because activity associated with your account might violate our Terms of Use."

The Terms of Use for MSA explain how Microsoft deals with a closed account. It states:

If your Microsoft account is closed (whether by you or us), a few things happen. First, your right to use the Microsoft account to access the Services stops immediately.

Second, we’ll delete Data or Your Content associated with your Microsoft account or will otherwise disassociate it from you and your Microsoft account (unless we are required by law to keep it, return it, or transfer it to you or a third party identified by you). You should have a regular backup plan as Microsoft won’t be able to retrieve Your Content or Data once your account is closed.

Third, you may lose access to products you’ve acquired.

Thus, this shows how users can be pretty much helpless if they get locked out of MSA or lose access to it if they (unknowingly) end up violating Microsoft's terms. It also shows how over-reliance on cloud services on Windows 11, something which LibreOffice recently pointed out, can lead to additional data nightmares like losing all of your data due to forced BitLocker encryption that you may not even be aware of was there in the first place.

The solution? Consider keeping your important data backed up locally on internal or external HDDs and SSDs or NAS solution, as only cloud storage is probably not the best decision.

Linux is absolutely incredible, but I'm also a realist, and I don't think for a lot of people it's the answer. Here's why.

I love Linux. I've been using it actively since the great year we were all locked indoors in 2020 when I decided to use my time to learn about something new.

Of course, I also use and appreciate Windows, I mean, I wouldn't be much use working here if I didn't.

But as someone with toes in both waters, I feel like I'm in a place I should be talking about this topic. More and more we're seeing talk of why you might switch to Linux when Windows 10 reaches end of life (EoL).

I think more people should use Linux. Or at the very least, try it out. You can't dislike something without trying it, and I'll say that to anyone about anything.

But in this case, I also feel like there should be caution. Windows 10 reaching EoL is very real, it's happening this year, and it could well be causing a problem for someone who might read this.

As good as Linux is, and as much as I might think people should give it a go, for a lot of people it isn't going to be a magic solution when Microsoft turns out the lights on Windows 10.

I guess the biggest worry for a lot of people will be that their tried and tested software might not be available on Linux. There is an element of truth in that.

If you just absolutely have to use Microsoft Office, or are a particularly heavy user of Microsoft 365, then no, you can't have that on Linux. Mostly.

Some Linux distros, such as Ubuntu, built in support for Microsoft 365 accounts in 2024, allowing you to access your OneDrive files as a remote account you can simply enable in Settings. Office apps, however, are not available on Linux.

There are alternatives, such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice, but as with switching to Google's suite of office apps, it's not necessarily the same.

The same is true of the Adobe suite, as another example. There is no Photoshop, no Premiere Pro, no After Effects. Again, there are alternatives, including the outstanding DaVinci Resolve for video editing, but alternatives aren't necessarily what folks want.

 I get that.

The good news is that for Microsoft 365, there are the web apps you can use, and they're good. Adobe even has a web version of Photoshop now, albeit not the absolute full-fat version.

But it should be acknowledged that for some workflows, you simply cannot just jump to Linux. Expecting someone to change the way they do things is not something to take for granted.

For many, there will be a way to carry on with minimal disruption and be happy. But those who simply can't shouldn't be ignored. It's a very real decision an affected user has to consider.

For the more adventurous, and I include myself in this, experimenting with different Linux distros is fun. It's actually something I would recommend to anyone who does make the switch.

But the fact there is no singular point I could say to everyone that you should just install means there's already a roadblock to overcome that Windows users simply aren't used to.

The obvious starting point is Ubuntu. That's where I started. But I couldn't tell you how many others I've tried before I eventually decided that I like using Fedora the most. I'm not even sure I could tell you exactly why I like Fedora the most.

But if you've only ever used Windows it can be daunting. There is a learning curve, no matter how good most modern Linux distros have become at onboarding, and being friendly to Windows-converts.

If you are interested in genuinely making the switch, I recommend trying a few different options first in a virtual machine.

Here's the real meat of things. I don't think for millions of more casual PC users that they would need to switch to Linux. Hell, for many of these people, I don't even think they need Windows, be it 10 or 11.

I'm talking about the type of user that spends most of their time using a web browser. They're browsing the internet, they're occasionally using things like Microsoft 365, but the majority of their use is done online.

For that, there's ChromeOS. Either by buying a Chromebook, often a more affordable option to a Windows laptop, or by recycling your Windows 10 machine with ChromeOS Flex.

ChromeOS is kinda sorta Linux, and like with WSL on Windows, you can fire up a full, virtualized Linux environment and use a terminal, GUI apps, and all that goodness.

But its main focus is, and always has been, the web. Web apps are king, with the added bonus of Linux apps and Android apps. Microsoft 365 setup and use is now as seamless as it can be, OneDrive can be integrated into the Files app, and you can pin the Microsoft 365 suite for online and offline use.

If you don't want to use Google Chrome as your main browser, you can install the Linux version of Microsoft Edge. But it's essentially a light, easy to use operating system, that is more usable than I'd wager many on Windows would give it credit for.

There is a case to switch to Linux, and I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a go. If your PC is still perfectly usable, why not? But I am sensible enough to see all sides and urge caution. It might not be the magic fix you're looking for.

You're not alone, a few people have reported that the patch is failing to install on their PCs.

Microsoft released the June 2025 Security Updates on June 10, the updates were available via KB5060842.

However, shortly after the update was released, Microsoft released a second update, KB5063060, to patch an issue that affected users who had installed the previous update. PCs that had Easy Anti-Cheat installed would unexpectedly restart when trying to launch games that use the service. It is used in Fortnite. Microsoft had released KB5063060 as an out-of-band update to replace the older one. But, in typical fashion, the latest Windows update is also quite buggy.

Some users are reporting that Windows 11 was not installing KB5063060 on Windows 11 24H2. It appears that the user's computer boot looped a few times, got back to the lock screen. The Settings app showed that the update had failed to install, with an error code 0x800f0922. The PC was usable, but the update would fail to install. A couple of users said that the update had failed to download, and one user went to the length of reinstalling Windows just to fix this problem. Yikes! That is quite a mess, and Microsoft is yet to acknowledge this as a known issue, let alone fix the problem.

One user seems to have resolved the problem by enabling SVM mode (Secure Virtual Machine) in the BIOS. That's for AMD CPUs, Intel users will need to enable VMX. Perhaps you can try that.

There are also reports about other games being impacted, issues with the mouse, keyboard, etc. It is unclear how widespread these issues are.

It's finally here. After several weeks of development, KDE Plasma 6.4 has been rolled out, delivering a ton of significant refinements across the entire UX, from how you manage windows to how you see notifications.

The biggest deal for power users is probably the increased flexibility in window management. Plasma 6.4 now allows you to set a completely different tiling layout for each virtual desktop. You can have a simple 50/50 split screen on one desktop for writing, and on another, have a complex grid with two apps snapped to the sides and two others floating in the middle.

On the visual side, the default Breeze Dark theme got a little darker for better contrast, and when a password box pops up, the rest of the screen dims to help you focus.

There is also a new Animations page in System Settings, which groups all the purely visual effects in one place so you can find them easily. The file transfer notification now shows a speed graph, giving you a much better idea of how a download is progressing. The system will even pop up a notice if you try talking into a muted microphone, and you can install system updates right from the notification that tells you they are ready. When you are in a full-screen application like a game or watching a movie, Plasma automatically enters a Do Not Disturb mode, holding back notifications until you are done.

Plasma 6.3, which was released last February, brought several features, including a "Help" category to the launcher after getting rid of the "Settings" one. Now, Plasma 6.4 gives the application launcher a green New! tag next to recently installed apps to help you find them.

KRunner and Spectacle, two of the most powerful utilities in Plasma, also received some serious attention. KRunner now lets you visualize colors just by typing in their hex code or even CSS names like "MintCream" or the ridiculous "PapayaWhip." The tool will then show you what that color looks like and give you its code in other formats.

Spectacle, the screenshot tool, has been completely overhauled. Pressing the Print Screen key now immediately puts you in selection mode, letting you grab a region or the whole screen much faster before jumping straight into the annotation tools. Screen recordings made in the WebM format or on screens with fractional scaling have also seen a massive quality boost.

The Bluetooth widget is getting smarter with better device recognition and easier pairing (we touched on this last month). People with nice monitors will appreciate the new HDR calibration wizard in the display settings. Plasma can also now handle Extended Dynamic Range and the P010 video format, improving power efficiency with HDR content. Digital artists were not left out either. Configuring the buttons on a stylus is "much more intuitive," and you can easily reset your tablet's calibration if you mess it up.

Finally, there is a lot of work under the hood. The System Monitor can now show GPU usage for Intel and AMD hardware on a per-process basis and has a new Sensors page for nerds who want to see raw temperature data.

When you drag and drop files on the same disk, you can now set it to always move them instead of asking what to do every time. The browser integration feature now supports the Flatpak versions of Firefox and Chromium-based browsers. All of this is built on top of support for a slew of new Wayland protocols, like "FIFO", "toplevel tag," and more.
