VMware has released updates for Workstation Pro on Windows and Linux and Fusion on macOS. The latest releases of Broadcom-owned hypervisors address security issues and several issues with network adapters and the snapshot feature.

If you use VMware Workstation Pro on Windows or Linux, you can update to version 17.6.4, which resolves four critical security vulnerabilities: CVE-2025-41236, CVE-2025-41237, CVE-2025-41238, and CVE-2025-41239. Also, there is a patch for CVE-2025-2884 with the moderate severity range.

The update also addresses a bug with the snapshots feature:

During a VM power-off operation, if Ask me is selected in VM > Settings > Options > Snapshots, a specific pointer isn't verified prior to back-end asynchronous function calls. As a result the pointer causes access violation, becomes invalid during the VM power-off procedure and you might receive the following error message. This issue is fixed in this release.

vmx [msg.log.error.unrecoverable] VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmx)
vmx Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred

VMware warns that version 17.6.4 has three known bugs. One breaks the network connection when installing Windows 11 (switch network adapter from NAT to Bridged to mitigate it), the multi-monitor feature does not work correctly in specific scenarios (no workarounds), and hardware acceleration fails when using an Intel GPU on a Linux host. The latter can be fixed by adding the following configuration property and value: mks.vk.gpuHeapSizeMB = "0"

VMware Fusion 13.6.4 received the same security patches, plus two bug fixes: one for the missing internet connection in NAT mode and one for failures when uploading a virtual machine from VMware Fusion to an ESXi host.

Full release notes for VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.4 are available here, and for VMware Fusion 13.6.4 here. Note that VMware's update tools are currently broken. As such, users cannot update apps using built-in methods. To get to the latest version, you will have to log in to your Broadcom account and download installation files from the downloads section.

This application floats under every Finder window, meaning you see it only when you're browsing files in macOS. You can type English-language sentences into it to do things like rename, convert, or compress files. The application uses the large language model to create a command, like what you could run in the Terminal. The application then shows it to you and asks whether you actually want to run it.

I played around with the application for a couple of days, trying all sorts of things. I highlighted a video and asked for it to be converted to an MP3 with just the audio, and that worked. I opened a folder full of photos and asked for every picture to be converted to a PNG, and that worked too. I opened up the folder where I store my personal journal and asked for a zip file of every entry that mentioned pancakes—I got one (137 entries, apparently).

This can feel a little like magic, but there's a caveat: You need a basic understanding of what is, and what isn't, possible to do with the command line in order to use the applications effectively.

“The goal was to make powerful tools more accessible—to bring the power of the command line to nontechnical users,” Humfrey tells me. “But what I’ve come to realize is that it really shines in the hands of semi-technical users: people who understand roughly what’s possible but appreciate a speed boost.”

If you're reading this article I think there's a good chance that's you. Maybe you occasionally use the command line to do things after a little bit of Googling or reading some documentation online. With Substage you don't have to do that—you can just ask for what you want and, if there's a command for the job, you'll probably get it.

None of this is without risk. Large language models make mistakes, which is why the application shows you the command before running it. This is another reason the application probably isn't easy to recommend to users with no command line experience. It's possible the generated command could do something drastic like delete your files, though I didn't run into problems like this. It's a good idea to double-check the commands as you go and to make sure your files are backed up before you start.

There are a few other limitations. Unlike ChatGPT and the more advanced models, Substage’s bot doesn’t have a memory feature, meaning you can't reference previous commands in the one you’re currently generating. The application also isn't aware of the contents of videos or photos, meaning you can't ask it to do things like put all the cat photos into a new folder.

Humfrey, for his part, says his favorite use for the application is media conversion.

“I know how to use After Effects, but it's so much easier to say ‘trim this 16:9 video to 16:10’ and be done with it,” he said, saying the application offers the flexibility of ffmpeg without the need to memorize the manual. It's a compelling use case, one I imagine more applications will explore as large language models mature.

Substage offers a two-week trial. After that you have the option to pay $4 per month to use it. Alternatively, if you run your own large language model on your local machine, or if you already have an API key for an AI model you use all the time, you can pay a one-time fee of $30.

Last week, Microsoft issued a public advisory noting that it has fixed a Windows Firewall issue that was plaguing Windows 11, version 24H2 since June's non-security preview update. However, some of our readers pointed out that this is false since they are still seeing the problem on their installations. Microsoft has now admitted that it updated its Windows Release Health dashboard by accident.

In the dedicated advisory for this Windows Firewall bug, Microsoft has noted that it accidentally updated its disclosure to a Resolved status on July 8, despite the issue not actually being fixed. As such, it has reverted to the Confirmed status, while still saying that it is working on a fix that will be released in a few weeks, no concrete timeline has been provided just yet.

As a refresher for those who haven't been actively following this thread: many Windows 11 customers began reporting that following the installation of June's non-security preview update (KB5060829), they were seeing Windows Firewall with Advanced Security being triggered by the operating system. Microsoft confirmed this behavior but encouraged customers that this error event is nothing to worry about since it's a false positive that is being mistakenly generated by an upcoming feature that is currently in development.

Then, on July 8, the company rolled out Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 (KB5062553), while also confirming that it has resolved the issue with Windows Firewall. However, as we have now learned, this disclosure was accidental. So, customers should still see the pesky error event being logged as Event 2042 in Event Viewer each time they restart their device. It will be listed as Config Read Failed with an additional message noting that "More data is available", but like before, it can be ignored. This error event does not impact any of the operating system's processes.

This Long-Term Support (LTS) release, version 4.5, will be officially maintained until July 2027.

The first thing you need to know about is the progress on the Vulkan backend. It is now considered production-ready and functionally on par with the old OpenGL renderer. This update integrates OpenXR, Subdivision surfaces, and USD/Hydra support directly into the Vulkan path, and it performs noticeably better than before.

OpenGL is still the default for now, but you can switch over in the preferences to see if it you like it. On a related performance note, the dependency graph builds up to 18% faster in complex projects.

If you're on Linux, you should notice some platform-specific improvements for both X11 and Wayland. These include larger mouse cursors for high-DPI displays and support for the "Hyper" modifier key.

Speaking of internal changes, the Compositor has received a complete overhaul to bring its node system in line with Geometry and Shader nodes. This introduces a slew of new, useful nodes like Vector Math, Float Curve, and Blackbody. Even the Denoise node now runs on the GPU.

Fluid artists will appreciate that liquid simulation is now between 1.25 and 1.5 times faster, meaning less time waiting for bakes to finish. For modelers, the "Snap to Cursor" operator now respects rotation, and the Boolean modifier has a new, more reliable solver. The sculptors were not forgotten either, with a new Mask by Color operator that allows you to generate masks from the model's vertex colors. The trim tools also get a new manifold boolean solver. That technical name means it is simply faster and less likely to fail on you.

Getting data in and out of Blender has also seen some major work. A brand new C++ based FBX importer has replaced the old Python one, and it is quite fast, clocking in at up to 15 times the speed. It also does a much better job at preserving shading and animation data, which has always been a headache with FBX. The application can also now write ProRes video files, and the USD importer has gotten better at handling animated camera properties and skeleton rest poses. You can even import multiple SVG files at once now.

With all the new additions, some older technology is being phased out. For one, there's bad news for macOS users on Intel hardware. Blender 4.5 is the final version that will officially support Intel Macs, with the Blender Foundation citing the high maintenance cost of dealing with graphics issues on those machines.

In a similar vein, support for big Endian platforms and files is now deprecated, with its complete removal scheduled for Blender 5.0. This also signals the end for the old Collada importer and exporter, which will be gone in the next major version.

Microsoft released plenty of Windows 11 updates in the first half of 2025. While the formal "big feature update" is coming in the second half of the year in the form of version 25H2, monthly updates delivered quite a lot of changes and new features. Check out our top 10 list here. Now, let's see what Microsoft has in store for the rest of the year.

The following 10 changes and upgrades are currently available in Windows 11 preview builds. Note that some features might not make it to the stable channel or arrive later. However, you can try them out by downloading one of the latest preview builds.

	1. Brand-new Start menu

Microsoft officially announced the new Start menu a couple of months ago. It is a major step up from what we had all these years, with plenty of user feedback fully or partially addressed. The menu now uses a single scrollable view, the Recommended section can be turned off, and users can enjoy bigger sizes with more layouts. If you frequently use the Start menu, the new variant will be a nice upgrade for you. It could potentially convince naysayers to finally leave Windows 10 behind.

By the way, check out some of the ideas and concepts that Microsoft considered while redesigning the Start menu.

	2. Adaptive Power Saver

Microsoft wants to make Windows 11 more energy efficient and improve battery life by introducing the so-called adaptive power saver. It will turn on or off power saver mode depending on the current workload, not your current battery level. Also, it will not dim your screen, unlike what we currently have in the stable channel. The new energy saver will be available on laptops, tablets, and handhelds, or any Windows 11 device with a battery inside.

	3. Change where hardware indicators appear

I am not sure if there are people who wanted to make the volume or brightness flyout appear in the top-left corner or top-center, but here we go. Soon, Microsoft will let you select where hardware indicators or flyouts appear. I would rather have the ability to move the taskbar to the top or left/right, but unfortunately, Microsoft is not asking me or thousands of other users.

	4. Agentic search in Settings

This feature is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. Agentic search in Settings lets you use natural language to describe what is wrong with your PC, and the operating system will offer solutions and even suggest taking action on your behalf. For example, you can say, "My cursor is too small." The system will understand the problem and make the cursor larger or show you where you can adjust it yourself. Pretty cool stuff. Too bad it will take my job, though.

By the way, the search box in the Settings app is now larger and at the top-center.

	5. Notification center clock

This is a small change, but apparently, a lot of Windows 11 users miss the notification clock from Windows 10. Soon, it will finally make it to Windows 11, allowing you to see a bigger time when viewing notifications or the calendar flyout, which, unfortunately, remains extremely primitive. Come on, Microsoft!

I have to give Microsoft credit for extra customization: You can turn off the notification center clock if you do not like it.

	6. Lock Screen customization

Windows 11 will soon let you pick what widgets appear on the lock screen. If you only want to have the weather widget or traffic, Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen will allow you to disable unused widgets and keep only the necessary ones.

	7. Quick Machine Recovery

Quick Machine Recovery is a new security feature that Microsoft introduced to help deal with the results of widespread outages like the one that happened in the Summer of 2024. Now, if a system cannot boot, it can try to receive the necessary fixes or mitigations by connecting to Windows Update from the recovery environment.

	8. Windows Advanced Settings

The Windows Advanced Settings Section will soon replace the For Developers section in the Settings app. It will bring certain features from the now-killed Dev Home app, including the ability to toggle long paths in directories, Virtual Workspaces settings, File Explorer source code integration, and more. Besides, Microsoft is making the new section a bit tidier with feature groups like Taskbar, File Explorer, Terminal, Virtual Workspaces, and more.

	9. Black Screen of Death

Blue Screen of Death, or BSOD, is going away. It will soon become the Black Screen of Death with no iconic smiley face, QR codes, or any mentions of Windows 11 at all. Microsoft is streamlining the experience to help users better understand what caused a crash, and that it is not always Microsoft that is to blame. Here is what the new Black Screen of Death looks like:

	10. Passkey improvements

Microsoft is improving the passkey experience for those using 1Password, a popular third-party password manager. Windows Security will be able to use your stored passkeys and save new ones across websites.

These ten features are not everything that Microsoft has in store. Future updates will bring more changes and improvements, and some of them will arrive in monthly cumulative updates. What features caught your attention, and what do you want Microsoft to change the most? Share your thoughts in the comments.

No new Windows preview builds today, except for a couple of small updates "that addresse some issues" with the previously released Windows 10 and 11 builds. However, Microsoft has a new feature update for the Copilot app and its Vision feature, which now can look at the entire desktop, not just one or two apps.

Starting with version 1.25071.125, which is now available to all Windows Insiders across all channels, users can share the entire desktop with Copilot Vision. As such, the AI can essentially see what you see and give you the necessary information about whatever happens on your screen. You can ask Copilot for tips, improvements, insights, guidance, or any other information about the currently open apps.

You can launch Copilot Vision by opening the Copilot app and clicking the glasses button in the composer. After that, select your desktop and start asking Copilot anything you like.

That, however, is not the only way to trigger Copilot Vision. From now on, Windows 11 users can launch Copilot Vision during their voice conversation with the AI. Microsoft says that the glasses icon is now available whenever you are talking with Copilot using your voice, which makes it a little more convenient to launch Copilot Vision.

It is worth noting that even though Copilot Vision updates are rolling out to all insiders across all four channels, those improvements are only available in countries where Copilot Vision is enabled. Also, the rollout is gradual, so give Microsoft a few more days to deliver those features if you do not have them after updating the Copilot app to version 1.25071.125 or newer.

Microsoft has rolled out an update for last week's Windows 10 Release Preview build 19045.6156, under KB5062649 for Insiders flighting the channel. The new build, Build 19045.6159 (KB5062649), does not contain any new features, it addresses some issues with the update itself. As a reminder, the biggest highlight was a fix related to the recently released ESU wizard that allows users to enroll for the Extended Security Updates (ESU).

Asided from that, the build added improvements related to Secure Boot. Microsoft is also promising "stability fixes" after the latest July 2025 Patch Tuesday.

The full changelog is given below:

Update resolves an issue impacting the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) enrollment wizard. Some users experienced a problem where clicking “Enroll now” caused the wizard window to open, begin loading, and then close unexpectedly. This occurred due to incomplete app registration, which prevented the wizard from loading correctly. This update addresses that issue to ensure a smoother enrollment experience.

[Mobile Operator Profiles] Updated: Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles.

[Secure Boot] New! Adds the ability to deploy SKUSiPolicy VBS Anti-rollback protections through the Secure Boot AvailableUpdates registry key.

[Stability issue] Fixed: This update addresses an issue observed in rare cases after installing the May 2025 security update and subsequent updates causing devices to experience stability issues. Some devices became unresponsive and stopped responding in specific scenarios.

[Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA)] Fixed: This update brings profiles up to date for certain mobile operators.

 [File systems]

Fixed: This update addresses an issue in the Resilient File System (ReFS) where using backup applications on large files could occasionally result in system memory becoming fully exhausted.

Fixed: An issue where searching for PDF files in a shared folder could return incorrect error messages, such as “No More Files” or “STATUS_NO_MORE_FILES.” These errors disrupted output to the virtual PDF printer and interfered with backup processes.

[Networking] Fixed: An issue where peripheral devices could take longer to work after resuming from hibernation on some devices with active cellular connections.

[Printer] Improved: Printer names now appear more clearly when using IPP Directed Discovery, making it easier to identify printers during setup.

[Stability issue] Fixed: This update addresses an issue observed in rare cases after installing the May 2025 security update and subsequent updates, causing devices to experience stability issues. Some devices became unresponsive and stopped responding in specific scenarios.

If you have installed Windows 11 at least once, you probably know that the operating system's stock apps cannot run immediately when you get to the desktop. Some of them are not apps at all, just placeholders that, when opened, download the necessary files from the Microsoft Store. This approach helped Microsoft reduce the install media file and speed up Windows 11 installation. Now, however, Microsoft is changing that.

Microsoft announced that the updated Windows Media releases of Windows 11 and Windows Server now include more recent versions of inbox applications. The company changed how this works for two reasons: security and convenience.

Microsoft is improving the operating system security by eliminating potential vulnerabilities and exposures in out-of-date RTM versions of inbox applications. As for convenience, there is no longer a need to wait for the app to download its files before you can start using it. This saves bandwidth and time for the end user.

Windows 11 version 24H2 now has the following 36 apps updated to the most recent versions:

We have already talked a lot about Windows 10 losing support on October 14, 2025, with Microsoft encouraging customers to migrate to Windows 11 as soon as possible. The company is also offering a year of extended updates through both free and paid means for those who stubbornly want to remain on Windows 10. That said, it is important to note that this is not the only operating system reaching the end of life in three months.

Over on its Windows Health Release dashboard, Microsoft has posted an advisory reminding customers that, apart from Windows 10 version 22H2 in the General Availability Channel, Windows 10 2015 LTSB is losing support on October 14, 2025, too. For those unaware, LTSB is an abbreviation for Long-Term Servicing Branch, but it is now more commonly referred to as Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC).

The LTSB/LTSC branch is intended for enterprise customers who prefer a stable version of their operating system with minimal to no changes over time. While it does get security patches, new features are not rolled out. It is primarily meant for mission-critical industries like healthcare and manufacturing.

LTSC versions of Windows typically receive 10 years of support. The variant losing support in October 2025 is Windows 10 2015 LTSB. This is the launch version of Windows 10 and uses version 1507 as the baseline, for those who remember the history of the OS. After a launch in 2015, Microsoft ended mainstream support for version 1507 in 2017, but LTSB customers received an extra eight years of support, which are ending in about three months.

Following October 14, 2025, only the following LTSB/LTSC versions of Windows 10 will be supported:

 Windows 10 LTSB 2016 (version 1607)

 Windows 10 LTSC 2019 (version 1809)

 Windows 10 LTSC 2021 (version 21H2)

At this point, perhaps organizations using an LTSC version of Windows 10 should consider Windows 11 LTSC. Currently, Windows 11 only has one LTSC release, namely 2024 (version 24H2), which will enjoy mainstream support until October 2029.

KDE Plasma 6.4 has received its third point release today, as scheduled. This update brings a lot of fixes across different components like the KWin window manager, the Plasma Desktop itself, and the Wayland implementation.

KWin got a significant portion of the repairs, especially for those running on Wayland. Users with high-resolution displays will be happy to hear that chaotic window resizing when using a fractional scale factor has been corrected. An odd input bug where clicks were ignored on Wayland if a tooltip was visible is also resolved.

Now, when you use a tablet with a relative dial, KWin will correctly send the delta values, and more importantly, it is guarded against a crash when handling tablet events. A memory leak in the DRM backend has also been plugged, and XWayland no longer misroutes mouse button inputs.

On the Plasma Desktop, an annoying bug with the lock screen has been squashed. Some users found that the screen would prompt for a password immediately upon locking, while for others it would not, and this update makes that behavior consistent.

For those still on the classic X11 session, the "Minimize All Windows" widget has been fixed and works as intended again. The Discover software center also feels more responsive now, with items in a list highlighting the moment you press them instead of waiting for the release.

A few other specific applications and services received some much-needed patches. As for Spectacle, a technical fix removes
useLayerShell()
to prevent it from breaking Qt apps launched afterward.

The KDE developers managed to resolve an issue with the Orca screen reader and repeated navigation key presses, as well as another issue where the built-in RDP server could crash from an invalid connection. Plasma 6.4.3 should begin appearing in the software repos for rolling-release distros over the next few days.

LibreOffice brings feature MS Office has had for almost 10 years

When Microsoft launched Office 2016, one big improvement the update brought was the support for Bitcoin, the world's most popular cryptocurrency. Now, LibreOffice, arguably one of Microsoft Office's biggest competitors, has finally added the same feature. It has been a long time coming for users of the free office suite who handle digital assets.

The change stemmed from a feature request by @social.chemicals267, a few days ago, on the project's bug tracker. The user pointed out that Bitcoin is a common unit of account and having native support would "help users manage Bitcoin transactions directly in spreadsheets without needing custom format workarounds." They even provided the exact technical specifications: the ₿ symbol is U+20BF, it should have 8 decimal places to account for a Satoshi, and it must appear before the number, just like a dollar sign.

This small patch has been merged into the main LibreOffice code. But do not expect to see it right away, as the change missed the feature freeze for the upcoming 25.8 release. But according to Phoronix, we should expect to see it next year, likely with the LibreOffice 26.2 update.

When you think about it, LibreOffice has been playing a lot of catch-up lately. The project has also been on the offensive, doing things like directly courting Windows users and encouraging them to switch to Linux and ditch Office for LibreOffice. It even launched a series of free guides to help people who make the switch.

Apart from this Bitcoin support, the most recent beta, 25.8, brought proper embedded font support, which should improve interoperability with PowerPoint. And if you look back, version 25.2 gave us support for inline headings in Writer, another one of those features that people migrating from Word just expect to work.

When this feature finally lands, managing your Bitcoin in LibreOffice Calc will become much simpler. You will just select your cells, head over to the Numbers tab in the Format Cells dialog, and pick Bitcoin from the currency list.

Microsoft recently open-sourced the coding assistant's implementation in Visual Studio Code so that other developers can build upon it too. Now, the company has shared some details about how heavily it is utilizing AI assistants in its own development processes.

Microsoft says that it utilizes its in-house AI-powered coding assistant for code reviews. This tool impacts over 600,000 pull requests (PRs) per month, encapsulating almost 90% of the company's total PRs. This coding review assistant doesn't have a specific name, but it was built with the help of the Developer Division's AI & Data team, and the learning during this process was then used in GitHub Copilot code reviews to benefit external customers too.

The Redmond tech firm says that a major issue with code reviews at scale is that reviewers sometimes focus too much on syntax and ignore more critical issues, while code authors often struggle to define context in complex PRs. This also results in PRs getting delayed, which is where AI-powered code reviews come into play, as they solve most of these problems in a relatively short period of time.

This code review assistant can automatically check the code, make comments, flag issues, suggest improvements and optimizations, and generate a summary of the PR. Human reviewers can also engage in a Q&A session with the assistant to understand the code better. Teams also have the option to configure the assistant and tailor it to a specific problem through customized prompts.

Microsoft has boasted the positive impact of this process, citing faster review cycles, improved code quality, and learning opportunities for developers and reviewers. The firm believes that this is the future of coding, which is also why it decided to share its own learning and tooling with external customers through GitHub Copilot code reviews - which became generally available in April 2025. We just hope that Redmond's internal AI tool isn't responsible for the Windows Vista startup sound in Windows 11.

Once the user selects the option to describe an image on screen, a popup will appear that will generate a description. The new describe image feature is part of a wider array of features and actions built into the Click To Do AI overlay on Windows 11. So far, Click To Do is capable of analyzing text that it can then summarize, create lists with, and even rewrite. It can also identify images and offer quick actions such as blurring or removing the background of an image on screen and search the web with the image to find out more.

Many of the actions that appear in Click To Do are customizable, and you can turn some of them off if you find yourself never intending to use them. Most of the actions that hand-off to an app can be disabled if you don't want to see them in the Click To Do menu.

The addition of a describe image feature is a welcome addition that makes Click To Do even more useful. Microsoft is clearly trying to position Click To Do as its own version of Google's Circle To Search, which has proven very popular on Android. In some ways, Click To Do is more advanced, capable of doing more with actions using on-device models.

Another benefit to using on-device AI models is privacy and security. Microsoft touts the new describe image feature as secure as it doesn't use the cloud to generate descriptions. That means the image you ask the AI to describe doesn't get sent to Microsoft, and instead is all done locally via the on-board AI model and the NPU inside your Copilot+ PC.

The new describe image feature is available now via the Windows 11 Insider Program, specifically the Beta and Dev Channels, and will roll out generally later this year. As of right now, the preview is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs with a Snapdragon processor, with Intel and AMD chips expected to gain access to the preview in the coming weeks.

Microsoft is rolling out a duo of new Windows 11 preview builds with the same changelogs. Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel can try build 26200.5702 (KB5062653), and Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel can download build 26120.4733 (KB5062651). Today's updates introduce a new feature for Click to Do, Administrator protection, and a lot of various fixes.

Starting with Click to Do, users with compatible devices can now ask AI to describe a picture. Windows 11 uses a local model for image processing, delivering faster results without sending your images to Microsoft servers. As of right now, image description is only available for Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon processors.

Next is Administrator protection, a platform change that protects "free-floating admin rights" by delivering just-in-time admin privileges. This feature is off by default and needs to be enabled via Windows Security under Account protection or via group policy. You can read more about Administrator protection here.

Other changes include improved privacy dialogs, which now dim the app when requesting permissions to access the camera, microphone, location, etc. Also, if you have Smart App Control in evaluation mode, you may see Smart App Control get turned on in Windows Security. Finally, the Beta build removes PowerShell 2.0, which has long been deprecated.

	Known issues include the following:

 [General]

Some Windows Insiders may experience a rollback while trying to install this update with a 0x80070005 in Windows Update. We’re working on a fix for Windows Insiders impacted.

[NEW] You may see multiple error pop-ups about unexpected elements when opening the Group Policy Editor.

 [Start menu]

The following are known issues for Windows Insiders with the new Start menu:

Using touch to navigate the new Start menu may not work reliably. For example, it currently does not support the swipe-up gesture.

Drag and drop capabilities are limited from “All” to “Pinned.”

 [Xbox Controllers]

Some Insiders are experiencing an issue where using their Xbox Controller via Bluetooth is causing their PC to bugcheck. Here is how to resolve the issue. Open Device Manager by searching for it via the search box on your taskbar. Once Device Manager is open, click on “View” and then “Devices by Driver”. Find the driver named “oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf)” where the “XXX” will be a specific number on your PC. Right-click on that driver and click “Uninstall”.

 [Click to Do (Preview)]

The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:

Windows Insiders on AMD or Intel™-powered Copilot+ PCs may experience long wait times on the first attempt to perform intelligent text actions in Click to Do after a new build or model update.

 [Input]

[NEW] The Microsoft Changjie Input method doesn’t work properly in this build – not able to select words. Reverting to the previous version of the IME in Settings should mitigate the issue while we work on a fix.

 [Widgets]

Until we complete support for pinning in the new widgets board experience, pinning reverts you back to the previous experience.

We are now in the second half of 2025, and it is now time to take a look at what Microsoft delivered for Windows 11 over the last six months. These days, Microsoft ships new features for Windows 11 every month, which makes it harder to track new changes and improvements. If you are still on Windows 10 and wonder whether you should finally leave the outgoing operating system behind, maybe some of the following changes will help you make the decision.

Note: Some of these features could still be rolling out.

	1. Small taskbar buttons

At long last, Microsoft finally lets users enable small taskbar buttons, just like in Windows 10. The feature is pretty flexible, and you can pick one of the three options: keep icons as they are by default, shrink icons when the taskbar is full, or keep icons small all the time.

You can enable small taskbar buttons in Windows 11 by heading to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Show smaller taskbar buttons.

What I do not like about this change is that the taskbar itself keeps its size. In Windows 10, enabling small icons also shrinks the taskbar for more vertical room. In this regard, Windows 11 remains less flexible than its predecessor.

	2. Settings app improvements

The Settings app received several welcome improvements, especially for inexperienced users. The About section now has so-called spec cards, which prominently show your PC's specs, such as the processor, memory, graphics card, video memory, and storage. Also, there is a new frequently asked questions section to help you better understand how certain components affect performance, how to check whether you are on the latest Windows 11 version, etc. This is hardly useful for tech-proficient users, but for newcomers, it is a great addition.

You can check out the new spec cards in Settings > System > About.

Also, the Settings app now has more Control Panel bits, such as the ability to change your mouse cursor, disable mouse acceleration, and more.

	3. Gamepad keyboard

This is one of my favorite Windows 11 upgrades in recent times. If you play games using a gamepad on your couch, the new gamepad keyboard makes typing much easier. And it is not just navigating the keyboard with a stick—the keyboard uses nearly all control elements on your gamepad for key modifiers, layout switching, additional buttons, etc. It is very well-made.

	4. Desktop icons improvements

I do not use desktop icons (all my apps are pinned to the taskbar), but for those who do, Microsoft finally fixed that stupid icon backplate for packaged apps. No more colorful icon backgrounds for packaged apps, something that has been nagging Windows users for quite a long time.

	5. Less nagging

Microsoft made Windows 11, particularly its File Explorer, less irritating. It lets you turn off OneDrive backup notifications that appear in the address bar whenever you open folders like Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc. Just right-click the notification and select "Turn off Reminder" or "Remind me in 1 month."

Keep in mind that if you install Windows 11 in online mode and with your Microsoft Account signed in during the initial setup, the system will enable OneDrive backup without asking you. Check out this article to learn more.

	6. Phone Link in the Start menu

The Start menu is no longer just about your pinned apps and recommendations. If you use Phone Link, you can now have a dedicated panel with the most important information from your phone, such as recent notifications, favorite contacts, status indicators, files, and more. If you do not like this feature, you can toggle it off in Settings > Personalization > Start menu.

	7. File Explorer improvements

Microsoft has fixed plenty of File Explorer bugs so far and added a few small features here and there. Windows 11 can now remember your File Explorer tabs and restore them after a reboot. Also, you can right-click a folder in the navigation pane and create a new folder from the context menu. This does not sound all that impressive, I agree, but it is what it is. Unfortunately, some other improvements, such as the ability to open File Explorer links in an existing window, are still not available to the public.

	8. Improved Windows Search + Settings

This one is for those with Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon or the latest AMD / Intel processors. Microsoft is finally fixing Windows Search with the help of AI, allowing you to find files and system settings using natural language. This is particularly useful if you do not remember the exact name of the file or feature you need.

	9. Copilot Vision and more

The Copilot app has received a new feature that allows you to share your current app with the AI and receive various help from it. Called Copilot Vision, it can analyze, offer insights, or answer your questions about what is happening on the screen. You can launch Copilot Vision by opening the Copilot app and clicking the glasses icon in your composer. Then, select the app you want to share, and start talking. Unlike the updated Windows Search, Copilot Vision works on all supported Windows computers, not just on Copilot+ PCs.

Also, the Copilot app now has the "Press to talk" feature (hold the Win + C and start talking), and Windows 11 lets you remap what happens when you press the Copilot key or the Win + C shortcut.

	10. Camera improvements

With the latest updates, Windows 11 allows several applications to use a single camera. This change is mainly accessibility-driven; for example, people with hearing disability can stream video for both a sign language interpreter and the audience at the same time. However, it will also be useful for everyone else, as opening the Camera app or camera settings during a Teams or Zoom call won't end up in a black square and an error message.

Finally, Windows 11 now has a basic camera mode, which could be useful when troubleshooting camera issues.

In addition to all these features, Microsoft fixed a lot of bugs in the operating system, so Windows 11 is now better than before. The rest of 2025 will bring plenty of other changes and new features, so stay tuned for a new recap of everything that is coming soon to Windows 11 later this year. Google's Sameer Samat doesn't get into what "combining" means.

Android and Chrome OS have been developed in parallel for years, but Google is planning to streamline its operating systems. In a recent interview, Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat stated bluntly that Android and Chrome OS are merging. This shift, a long time in the making, could give Google more room to maneuver as it plans for new mobile computing experiences.

In the interview, TechRadar's Lance Ulanoff had other things on his mind, but Samat peppered him with questions about how he uses his Apple devices. "I asked because we’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done," said Samat.

We don't get back to this point in the remainder of the interview, but it's probably the most interesting thing Samat said. "Combining" can mean many things, but we can certainly speculate. In this case, it might mean the writing is on the wall for Chrome OS as it currently exists.

Chrome OS definitely had a moment during the pandemic as new remote workers and students sought cheap laptops to get them by. Google worked with multiple OEM partners to promote major Chromebook releases, and Chrome OS itself got big updates. Google expanded the support window to eight years, added Phone Hub integration, enhanced desktop management, added the Chromebook Plus certification for high-end devices, and much more.

Things have stagnated since then—we hardly ever hear Google talk about Chrome OS now. In the age of AI, Google still finds time to talk about Android and add new features to the platform, even if they no longer align with new versions. In fact, Android is becoming a bit more like Chrome OS with the addition of desktop multitasking support, which will roll out in the coming months. So Google is making Android into a more capable desktop OS while Chrome OS stays the course. There have been some reports of Chrome OS essentially becoming Android, going beyond Google's stated goal of using parts of the Android tech stack on Chromebooks.

Making Android the base of Google's personal computing efforts could fuel the company's next attempt to compete with the iPad. In the past, it has tried both Android and Chrome OS tablets, neither of which did much to slow Apple's growth. A more capable version of Android with desktop windowing, however, might offer the best of both worlds. Chrome OS already supports Android apps, so the groundwork is there in the Play Store. The rise of Arm-based laptops also makes this a good time to scale up Android. On the other side of the fence, we see Apple bringing more desktop-style features to the iPad. Both companies seem to be converging on a similar experience, but they're coming at it from different directions.

Any major shakeup in Google's software ecosystem could have negative impacts, though. Current Chromebooks are based on reference platforms, which get an impressive 10 years of update support. Many of these laptops are running x86 hardware instead of Arm, and Android's x86 support is spotty. With Arm increasingly important in laptop form factors, how would future updates to these machines work? It has the potential to be a real mess.

Given the vagueness of Google's official statements, it may be a while before the nature of this shift is fully apparent. No matter how Google understands "combining" in this case, things are going to change for Chromebooks.

A new feature now in preview testing in the Windows 11 Canary Channel is designed to increase battery life by adaptively enabling energy saver mode based on your current workflow, not battery level.

Microsoft is trying out a new feature for Windows 11 that is designed to adaptively enable energy saver mode based on your current usage of your PC. The feature is dubbed "adaptive energy saver," and will switch on battery saver mode regardless of your battery level, based on how you're using your PC.

"Adaptive energy saver is an opt-in feature that automatically enables and disables energy saver, without changing screen brightness, based on the power state of the device and the current system load" says Microsoft in the blog post announcing the feature.

On paper, it actually sounds like a good idea. Windows devices are notorious for having not great battery life, and so adaptively enabling energy saving mode could help increase the longevity of your laptop if you're only conducting tasks that don't require a lot of compute power.

Microsoft doesn't go into any technical details as to how this feature works, but I suspect it will essentially measure your current CPU and GPU usage, and weigh up whether you need extra power to complete the task you're currently working on. If not, it will enable energy saving mode.

If you're just writing emails and browsing the web, adaptive energy saver will likely kick in to save battery life. Alternatively, if you're trying to render a video or play a game, then it's likely adaptive energy saver will disable itself to give you as much performance as possible.

Notably, adaptive energy saver won't change your screen brightness, likely in an attempt to make the feature as subtle as possible in its operation. It would be annoying to have your screen constantly changing brightness whenever it enters energy saver mode adaptively. The icon on the Taskbar will still change to show when energy saver is active.

You can configure which energy saver mode is enabled in Settings.

Additionally, the new adaptive energy saving mode is optional. It doesn't appear to be on by default, meaning you will need to head into Settings to turn on the feature yourself if you want your PC to adaptively enable energy saver while you use it. Otherwise, it will be set to the old school way of doing things.

Windows 11's current energy saver mode will automatically come on when your battery reaches a certain percentage, usually 20% or 30%. When enabled, energy saver mode lowers your screen brightness and reduces system load, including capping the power delivered to the CPU and GPU to prolong battery life.

Of course, given this feature is now only in testing with Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel, feedback will likely determine if this feature actually ships. Microsoft is known for trailing features in the Windows Insider Program that never see the light of day, and this could be one of them, pending feedback from users.

In recent years, Microsoft has changed how energy saver mode works on Windows 11, even bringing it to PCs without a battery in them. That means even desktop computers can enable energy saver mode these days, which helps reduce the amount of energy they are pulling from the wall.

Adaptive energy saver is only for PCs with a battery, so desktops won't be able to take advantage of this automatic mode. However, desktops can still choose to manually enable energy saver whenever they like, and can even set it to always be enabled, just like laptops can.

This new feature is now rolling out in preview as part of the Windows 11 build 27898 build that was released to the Canary Channel last week. Microsoft utilizes an A/B rollout system that means some users might not see it right away once they upgrade to the latest preview build.

The Start menu in its typical form factor is long dead to me (my fellow Usama Jawad recently shared the same sentiment in his editorial). Microsoft's PowerToys Command Palette fully replaced it for me, and I never looked back. This powerful search-like launcher can find files, launch apps, run commands, and do much more with the help of additional modules. In the upcoming PowerToys update, Command Palette will become even more useful.

PowerToys' GitHub repository reveals that the next update, version 0.93, will bring a much-needed update to app search in Command Palette. In addition to showing you the entire list of available applications, it will allow you to pin your favorite apps, just like you can pin them to the taskbar or the Start menu. Also, your favorite apps should show up on the home screen when you invoke the launcher.

In case you are not familiar with it, you can open the list of all apps in Command Palette by pressing Win + Alt + Space (or your custom key sequence that can be set in the module's settings) and then selecting "All apps," which is shown first by default. Then, Command Palette scans all available apps and presents them in a list with a few additional bits like type or path.

As of right now, there is no information on how many apps Command Palette will let you pin or when version 0.93 will be available. The previous update, version 0.92, arrived at the beginning of this month, with a small bug-fixing update following shortly. Considering that PowerToys gets monthly feature updates, it is safe to assume that we will see version 0.93 somewhere in August.

Command Palette deserves a dedicated series of articles highlighting its capabilities, and if you have not tried it yet, we highly recommend you give it a shot. It is fast, powerful, configurable, and extensible (Microsoft should make it and a bunch of other tools part of Windows). From time to time, Google Chrome drops support for legacy operating systems, likely because the development costs are not worth it for a shrinking user base. Last month, we learned that Chrome 139 is dropping support for two ancient versions of Android, namely Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9.0 Pie. Now, it appears that this release of Chrome will end support for macOS 11 as well.

An entry on the Chrome Platform Status page indicates that Chrome 138 will be the last version of the browser to support macOS 11.0. This operating system, also known as Big Sur, was announced back in June 2020 and was globally rolled out in November of the same year. It was succeeded by macOS 12 Monterey in 2021, and Apple ended support for the OS in November 2023.

In its release notes for Chrome 139 (expected on July 30), Google does highlight that Apple itself has ended support for Big Sur, so Chrome actually supported the OS for almost two additional years. The company highlights that it is essential that Chrome is run on a supported OS. While Chrome will continue to work on macOS 11 Big Sur, it won't receive any new updates, security patches, or features.

That said, it is interesting to note that Chrome 139 now requires at least macOS 12 Monterey, which already ran out of support almost a year ago. Another interesting observation from the end of support page for macOS 11 Big Sur is that the page hasn't been updated in the past month, so an message on the dedicated page for this removal does mention that "This feature hasn't been verified as accurate since last month , but it is scheduled to ship in 2 weeks."

Regardless, it is important for users to run operating systems that are supported by their respective vendors. Currently supported versions of macOS include macOS 13 Ventura, macOS 14 Sonoma, and macOS 15 Sequoia.

Google is finally combining Android and ChromeOS into a single platform. This isn't the first time the idea has been floated.

TechRadar's Lance Ulanoff reports that Sameer Samat, the President of Android Ecosystem at Google, has told him blog that Google is combining Android and ChromeOS. We have heard about such rumors for a long time, nearly a decade. But this pretty much confirms it.

Last year, reports emerged stating that Google wanted ChromeOS to compete with iPad. That's an interesting idea. In 2023, I reported that Apple was working on a low-cost MacBook to compete with Chromebooks. Well, that's supposedly happening soon according to a report by Apple Insider, Apple is expected to launch a MacBook with an A18 processor, similar to the one on iPhones. Apple's upcoming iPadOS 26 improves things drastically with multitasking bringing it closer to macOS, hopefully the new Chrome OS/Android will be up to the challenge.

As a matter of fact, let me quote some new multitasking features that were announced for Android 16. The Desktop Mode will add a new desktop windowing system to open, group, resize multiple app windows. Android 16 also supports custom keyboard shortcuts for navigation, launching apps. It also adds Taskbar Overflow, which shows icons of recently opened apps. Now, it makes a lot more sense. This is closer to ChromeOS.

Samat also seemed to be interested on how people were using their laptops these days, what they're getting done. This could have been a subtle hint at the app ecosystem that people can expect on ChromeOS/Android. For example, whatever you do on your laptop, you can do the same on Android. Throw in a few slides about Gemini AI, Gmail, Google Docs, etc. and you got yourself a nice little promo. That's probably how they would market it to attract users, I suppose.

A laptop running on Android is interesting for sure. Well, it can't be worse than Windows, I imagine. The real question is, which devices would be compatible with this upcoming operating system.

Clem Lefebvre, head of the Linux Mint project, has announced that the Linux Mint 22.2 “Zara” beta will be released at the end of July or early August. As always, it’s a notable upgrade, bringing with it an updated Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernel, which means it’ll have better support for newer hardware like CPUs, GPUs, and wireless cards.

As a beta, it’ll be pretty stable, but it’s not recommended for production machines. It won’t take long for the stable update to follow, so just wait for that or do an in-place upgrade if you’re already running Mint.

It’s not just new hardware support that’s arriving in Linux Mint 22.2, it’ll also add a new XApp called Fingwit, which provides built-in support for fingerprint login, screensaver unlock, and sudo authentication. If it needs to, the app will fall back to password entry.

Additionally, Linux Mint 22.2 brings an update to the Mint-Y theme, which is getting a subtle blue tint for a more modern and metallic look. It’ll also be getting improved libAdwaita compatibility, allowing Flatpak apps to better match your GTK theme and accent colors.

The Cinnamon desktop is also seeing more Wayland development, but the full transition isn’t happening just yet.

Lefebvre announced that after Linux Mint 22.2’s stable release, the focus will shift to LMDE 7 “Gigi”, which is expected around September. This version will be based on Debian 13, rather than Ubuntu 24.04 LTS like the mainline Mint uses. One of the big new features to expect in LMDE 7 is official OEM installation support, making it easier for manufacturers to pre-install this version of Linux Mint.

Roughly a week ago, Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11. These updates brought some enhancements on Windows 11 and fixed several issues across both operating systems. However, it seems that Microsoft may have accidentally introduced a new bug in Windows 10.

Several Windows 10 customers have taken to Reddit over the weekend to highlight an issue that breaks the emoji search panel in the operating system. For those unaware, this is the UX that pops up when you use the Win + . keyboard shortcut. The search experience is doesn't bring up search results when you type in a term. Instead, it constantly displays the message "We couldn't find this one." each time you try to search for an emoji.

Based on the reports, it seems like the latest Patch Tuesday update released last week, KB5062554, is triggering the bug. Our own testing as well as reports from Reddit users confirms that the emoji search panel functionality was working completely fine prior to applying Patch Tuesday, but immediately breaks after installation.

It's unclear what caused this problem, but it appears that it is widespread and impacts everyone who uses this functionality. Interestingly, Microsoft hasn't acknowledged the problem just yet, its Windows Release Health dashboard for Windows 10 makes no mention of this.

Unexpected problems like this will likely worry Windows 10 remainers who are resisting Windows 11, and want to stick to their current OS, even if it's in an unsupported state. That said, Microsoft is offering a year of extra updates to Windows 10 customers through both paid and free means, so it might be time to consider that option for now.

For the time being, though, we will just have to wait for Microsoft to acknowledge the issue and provide an ETA for a fix. Sometimes, the company releases out-of-band updates for critical problems rather than waiting for Patch Tuesday, but this probably doesn't classify as one.

Microsoft has just released an out-of-band (OOB) update, KB5064489, for Windows 11, version 24H2. This update addresses an issue that prevents some Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) from starting when Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) is enabled. The Redmond giant said this issue was affecting non-Trusted Launch General Enterprise (GE) VMs on older SKUs, due to a secure kernel initialization issue.

Once you've installed the KB5064489 update, your system should be on OS Build 26100.4656. You can check this by pressing Windows + R, type winver, and pressing Enter.

Microsoft decided to release this OOB update outside of the regular Patch Tuesday schedule due to its critical nature. While critical, it’s important to note that it only affected VMs using version 8.0 of VBS offered by the host, which is a non-default version, so those affected could be of a smaller number. The fix will mean smoother operations for businesses who rely on these setups to work without a hitch.

This update also bundled a servicing stack update (SSU), KB5063666, taking that component to build 26100.4651. While there’s nothing specific to mention about this bit of the update, it’s important as it allows crucial components of Windows to reliably receive and install future updates.

Topping off, Microsoft states that there are no known issues with this update, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful because Neowin commenters frequently report issues when applying patches. It might be wise to backup any important data before doing the upgrade.

If you have any offline machines that can’t connect to Windows Update, you can download this update as an offline package from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Linus Torvalds has released the sixth release candidate for Linux 6.16 meaning we are just two or three weeks away from the stable version. Notably this week, Torvalds had a “scare” due to instability being caused within the kernel. Annoyingly, the issue was difficult to reproduce or find the root cause.

Initially, Torvalds thought it might be a DRM or Netlink issue and started flailing around blaming everybody “and their pet hamster”. Thankfully, the issue was able to be replicated and fixed with a simple revert to before the issue was introduced.

Aside from this pretty big issue, this week saw some pretty random fixes spread out fairly evenly without a heavy focus on any area. Torvalds mentions that there are fixes for drivers, arch fixes, filesystems, networking, tooling, and documentation.

For those unfamiliar with the development cycle of the Linux kernel, after a release has gone gold, the new features are added to the kernel and then the release cycles begin to stabilize those new features. There are typically seven or eight RCs and then the new version comes out and Linux distributions can start rolling it out.

The main benefit of upgrading the kernel is that new hardware tends to be included and file systems see improved performance. If you’ve ever tried Linux before and the Wi-Fi or graphics didn’t work, trying again after a big kernel upgrade may see your hardware start working.

While this week saw a worrying scare that could have potentially delayed Linux 6.16, things seem back on track with Torvalds calling for continued testing for the remaining “couple more weeks”. This suggests we will see testing this week before rc7 and then testing for another week before the stable release.

If no big issues crop up, we should see the release of Linux 6.16 on July 27. More bleeding-edge distributions like Fedora and Arch should then release it for their users soon after, while slower distros like Ubuntu will wait until the next big release.

Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 this year in October. This may affect as many as 400 million systems worldwide, which won't be able to upgrade as they don't meet the system requirements eligibility criteria. As such, an "End of Windows 10’ toolkit" has been released in order to help such users so that they aren't misled.

Fortunately, on the Microsoft 365 (M365) apps front, the company had a change of heart, as Neowin spotted that the tech giant had quietly extended support for M365 apps for an additional three years until 2028.

Microsoft believes this is important as offices and organizations may be transitioning to Windows 11 from 10 during this period, yes Microsoft does recommend that users and enterprises alike do so as the decade old OS still has some unfixable bugs.

The company said: "To help maintain security while you transition to Windows 11Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 reaches end of support. These updates will be delivered through the standard update channels, ending on October 10, 2028."

However, at that time, Microsoft did not provide a breakdown of how the various channels would be receiving updates. Neowin noticed today while browsing that more details have since been added. Microsoft writes:

Devices running Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will receive feature updates until Version 2608 is released on the following dates:

August 2026 for Current Channel (including all versions for individuals and families)

October 13, 2026 for Monthly Enterprise Channel

 January 12, 2027 for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel

Devices will remain on Version 2608, receiving only security updates until October 10, 2028.

Thus, essentially, Microsoft has informed that version 2608 will be the last Office 365 version to be supported on Windows 10 across the various channels, and to upgrade to a M365 version beyond that, users must move to Windows 11. For those wondering, the Current Channel is running version 2506 at the moment.
