	A new month is here, and Statcounter has fresh data about all things connected to the internet. We have already published a story <a automate_uuid="22f391ae-a412-41f5-87ef-241a56d88b17" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/people-are-ditching-windows-10-ahead-of-the-end-of-support/" rel="external nofollow">about Windows 10 losing its customers to Windows 11</a> rather quickly, and now, it is time to look at what is going on in the browser market, where things are much quieter.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Statcounter's July 2025 data, the most popular browser in the world is further solidifying its position. Last month, Chrome increased its market share to 69.98%, climbing to nearly a new all-time high (+3.09 points).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft Edge is second, but the gap between the two browsers is big and it is increasing. In July 2025, Microsoft's browser lost quite a big chunk of users, going down to 11.8% from 13.06%.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft is trying to win some hearts back by introducing the <a automate_uuid="e7d8b20b-5266-41de-84ae-83b3b21f2b5e" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-edge-is-turning-into-ai-browser-with-new-copilot-mode/" rel="external nofollow">new Copilot Mode </a>with smart page summarization, multi-tab context, browsing journeys, and more. However, not all users are comfortable with letting Microsoft's AI tap into their browsing, so it will be interesting to see how the market reacts to this novel idea. Google is also working on <a automate_uuid="efeb161d-5c64-4392-9da5-a1e404d2837d" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-chromes-new-ai-summarizes-store-reviews-for-you/" rel="external nofollow">more AI-powered experiences for Chrome</a>, understanding the potential threat from new generation browsers <a automate_uuid="f2fa4edf-0893-4e8e-9f4d-b83cbf3f8fef" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/perplexity-launches-comet-ai-web-browser-locks-it-behind-200month-subscription/" rel="external nofollow">such as Comet from Perplexity</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Other browsers' market shares also decreased, succumbing to Chrome's overwhelming dominance. Apple's Safari is third with 6.51% (-1.83 points); Firefox is third with 5.32% (-0.52 points), and Opera is fourth with 2.2% (-0.43 points).

<p>
	On the mobile market, things are similar, minus Microsoft Edge, which is nowhere to be seen despite having some quite useful features, such as extension support and even <a automate_uuid="08234a5d-8b3f-449f-940a-e0930581d19d" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/adguard-releases-ad-blocker-optimized-for-microsoft-edge-on-mobile/" rel="external nofollow">dedicated ad-blockers made specifically for Microsoft Edge</a>. Google Chrome is first with a 67.32% market share, Safari is second with 22.42%, and Samsung Internet is third with 3.5%.

	Windows 11 SE was made for school laptop fleets where ChromeOS has made inroads.
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft says it plans to stop providing updates for Windows 11 SE, the special Windows 11 variant intended to compete with Google's ChromeOS in schools. The change was announced quietly <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/education/windows/windows-11-se-overview#cw" rel="external nofollow">via this Microsoft support document</a> (spotted by <a href="https://www.drwindows.de/news/windows-11-se-microsoft-stampft-sonderedition-fuer-den-bildungsbereich-ein" rel="external nofollow">the German-language site Dr. Windows</a>), which says that Windows 11 SE will not be getting a version of this year's Windows 11 25H2 update. Security updates for Windows 11 SE will end in October of 2026, when Windows 11 24H2 stops receiving updates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Support for Windows 11 SE—including software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes—will end in October 2026," the document reads. "While your device will continue to work, we recommend transitioning to a device that supports another edition of Windows 11 to ensure continued support and security."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has fielded multiple would-be ChromeOS competitors over the years, looking to prevent, suspend, and/or reverse Google's success in selling the laptops to schools and price-conscious laptop buyers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"<a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/05/new-windows-8-1-with-bing-sku-announced/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 8.1 with Bing</a>" in 2014 gave PC makers lower-cost Windows licenses in exchange for mandating Bing as the default search engine; <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/05/microsoft-takes-on-chrome-os-with-new-windows-10-s/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10 S in 2017</a> was meant to make IT administrators' lives easier by only running apps from the Microsoft Store. That iteration morphed into "<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/02/windows-10-s-becoming-a-mode-not-a-version-as-microsoft-shakes-up-its-pricing/" rel="external nofollow">S Mode</a>" in 2018, allowing the restrictions to be turned off easily and free of charge.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And then Windows 11 SE—a separate variant of Windows, not a replacement for S Mode, which still ships on low-cost systems—arrived in 2021. It was its own, purpose-built thing, designed specifically to replicate some of the things that make Chromebooks work well in schools. Students' files were automatically stored in OneDrive so they would automatically be available no matter what laptop the student was using; some standard Windows features had been removed to improve performance on low-end hardware and reduce distractions; and administrators could easily control what apps and extensions were installed via Microsoft Intune.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 11 SE was only available on a handful of purpose-built, low-cost PCs for education, including <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/11/the-latest-surface-is-a-250-laptop-that-takes-a-swing-at-cheap-chromebooks/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's own Surface Laptop SE</a>. It was never offered as a standalone product, and users couldn't download a version to try on a regular PC.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We've asked Microsoft if it has any official recommendations for schools that want to convert existing Windows 11 SE laptops to a different edition of Windows. We've also asked what buyers who wanted Windows 11 SE should buy instead. We'll update this article if we receive a response.

	Windows 10 will receive its final update in less than three months. Even though Microsoft lets customers get one more year of updates for free, mainstream support is ending on October 14, 2025. Now, <a automate_uuid="e34d18fb-aae6-4683-a69e-0c08b5361571" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-is-10-years-old-today/" rel="external nofollow">the ten-year-old operating system</a> is<a automate_uuid="3d3fc4de-fc8f-4e47-a4d7-476557e7aa15" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-end-of-windows-10-support/" rel="external nofollow"> on its final leg</a>, and people are abandoning the sinking ship, as Statcounter reports.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to the latest data from the firm, Windows 10's market share is dropping. In July 2025, the operating system went from <a automate_uuid="1db10acb-ffe9-4c4f-81c1-75724f39b1db" href="https://gs.statcounter.com/windows-version-market-share/desktop/worldwide/#monthly-202407-202507" rel="external nofollow">being head-to-head with Windows 11</a> to significantly lower than its successor. Now, Windows 10 has 42.99%, which is a 4.99-point drop in just one month. Year-over-year change is -22 points: from 64.99% to 42.99%.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While there are plenty of "I am switching to Linux after Windows 10" articles circulating online, most Windows 10 refugees stay with Microsoft and simply upgrade to Windows 11, as Statcounter's data shows. Windows 11 jumped from 47.98% to 53.39%, which is a 5.41-point increase in only one month, a rare sight for the most controversial modern Windows release. Year-over-year change is +22.56 points.

<p>
	Supported Windows versions hold over 96% of the Windows market. The rest is shared between Windows 7 (2.04%), Windows 8 (0.88%), Windows XP (0.44%), and Windows 8.1 (0.23%).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you are still on Windows 10, you might want to start planning your exit strategy. One option is to <a automate_uuid="c7f4553b-0412-4e3c-a9b1-71a0a940d829" href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-get-one-more-year-of-windows-10-updates-for-free/" rel="external nofollow">enroll in the Extended Security Update program</a>, which will get you 12 more months of security-only updates. That is plenty of time to wait for more Windows 11 polish, device upgrade, or another alternative for Windows 10. Another option is to upgrade to Windows 11, <a automate_uuid="e5e92ee2-d159-4bf2-8885-3abb36ec4387" href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-create-lightweight-windows-11-for-unsupported-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">even if your device is not supported</a>. With Nvidia already having <a automate_uuid="0df9a4ee-1010-4d4f-a108-a62d604dc234" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-gives-a-timeline-on-ending-windows-10-driver-support/" rel="external nofollow">a deadline for the end of driver support on Windows 10</a>, many users will have to leave the outgoing operating system behind sooner or later.

	These are the biggest improvements that Microsoft is testing for version 25H2 and 24H2, during the second half of July.
</h3>

<p>
	During the second half of July 2025, Microsoft released another seven preview builds for <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-11" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11</a>, for a total of over a dozen previews in a month. Some of which were part of the version 24H2, 25H2, and some others were not part of any specific branch.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the Canary Channel, we've seen:

<p>
	Currently, the builds from the Dev and Beta Channels are virtually identical, even though they belong to two different versions. The Canary Channel also introduced three new builds that only included fixes and minor changes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although no new features were added to the previews in the Canary Channel, the company made available for <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso" href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">download the ISO file for build 27902</a>.

	UniGetUI, <a automate_uuid="8795d933-16e4-4a51-87f6-15343362e5a3" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/unigetui/" rel="external nofollow">formerly known as WinGetUI</a>, is a very popular package manager for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It can loosely be described as a "package manager for package managers," as it combines the command line interfaces (CLIs) of various package managers like npm, Chocolatey, and pip in a single interactive GUI. <a automate_uuid="176cd4b6-a35f-4255-a700-83a969da8033" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-1110-package-manager-unigetui-gets-massive-update-with-bulk-download-options/" rel="external nofollow">Following a major update to version 3.3.0 almost a couple of weeks ago</a>, the project has now netted version 3.3.1 with some significant improvements in tow.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Version 3.3.1 of UniGetUI introduces semi-automated self-healing mechanisms. Basically, UniGetUI will check for corruption issues triggered by integrity violations, and if these are detected, the user will be presented with an integrity report and will be prompted to repair them. The repair process includes agreeing to an automated reinstall process or reinstalling UniGetUI yourself through <strong>Apps &amp; features &gt; UniGetUI &gt; Modify</strong>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Additionally, crash issues related to GitHub cloud backup and GitHub login have been fixed, which should be a major relief for GitHub customers. A minor bug related to certain in-app pop-ups not displaying the acrylic background correctly has also been patched.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Furthermore, the app has removed the WinUIEx dependency and migrated to AppSdk Titlebar. A Toolbar UI change which previously clubbed multiple items into a single menu has also been reverted. Other UI bugs and deadlocks when loading dialogs have been resolved too. Notably, improvements have been made to the UniGetUI Elevator, but they have not been detailed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you're a UniGetUI customer who is also technical, you should <a automate_uuid="dc668c6c-d502-4819-a833-43f89bc1a14b" href="https://github.com/marticliment/UniGetUI/releases/tag/3.3.1" rel="external nofollow">check out the full details in the change log here</a> before you trigger the update. The Microsoft Store is now an incredible, reliable, and safe place to discover and download apps on Windows. Everyone should be using it, and it's time to give it another chance if you're not.
</h3>

<p>
	The Windows app store has taken many forms over the years, first launching with Windows 8 in 2012 as the "Windows Store," a marketplace for "modern" apps that never fully materialized. The store was slowly updated, improved, and relaxed over the course of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-10" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-10" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-10" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10</a>'s lifecycle, eventually being rebranded as the "Microsoft Store" we know today.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But it wasn't until 2021, with the launch of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-11" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11</a>, where the Microsoft Store really came into its own. Up until a few years ago, I almost never opened the Microsoft Store because it was ugly, slow, and didn't include most of the apps I needed to download. Now, the Microsoft Store is an entirely different beast, with a beautiful fluid UI and catalog of apps that covers everything I need to use on Windows.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has made some <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-app-store-free-publishing-announcement-build-2025" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-app-store-free-publishing-announcement-build-2025" rel="external nofollow">key changes to the Microsoft Store</a> in recent years that has transformed it into a genuinely useful app marketplace for Windows users. The first big change Microsoft made was opening the floodgates to legacy and desktop-class Windows apps, no longer requiring developers to make code changes to their apps to make them compliant with the store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<p>
			<img alt="Microsoft Store updates" class="ipsImage" height="720" width="720" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/kX3dqWSmfowPrVaNANguXG-1024-80.jpg">

		<p>
			<em><span>Apps that are hosted on Microsoft's servers and third-party developer servers can appear here now. </span></em>
		</p>

		<p>
			<em><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The second big change was allowing developers to host their apps on their own servers while still being listed in the Microsoft Store. That means app developers can distribute their apps and app updates via the same systems they've always used instead of relying on and paying for Microsoft's hosting servers or in-app purchase fee. The Microsoft Store acts as a search engine, listing the app but pulling the bits directly from the developer.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Because of these key changes, there are now more apps available to download via the Microsoft Store than ever before. For me, all the apps I use on Windows on a daily basis are available to find via the Microsoft Store, offering one-click downloads for everything I need and making setting up a new Windows PC easy.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Here's just a handful of apps I use that I was surprised to see in the Microsoft Store:

							Microsoft has also made improvements to the backend of the Microsoft Store. In the past, app updates and downloads would almost always fail for unknown reasons, but today that rarely happens. When it does happen, the Microsoft Store finally gives you a helpful error code and explains what caused the update to fail and how to fix it, which is really great.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							The UI of the Microsoft Store itself is also something to be celebrated. It has come such a long way since the Windows 10 days, where it was a slow and ugly web app that was unresponsive and terrible to use. The new Microsoft Store is a complete redesign from the ground up, using beautiful <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-finally-getting-its-windows-ui-platform-act-together-with-winui-3-and-wpf" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-finally-getting-its-windows-ui-platform-act-together-with-winui-3-and-wpf" rel="external nofollow">native Windows UI frameworks</a> for a fast, fluid, and dynamic experience.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							The entire app is responsive, with features such as hovering over app listings for more information and a quick install button. The homepage is also dynamic, showing you apps it thinks you might want to download based on your other app downloads, which I've found to be genuinely useful when discovering new apps I didn't know I needed. It's so good, I'd argue it's Windows 11's best in-box app, bar none.

								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									It took over a decade, but the Microsoft Store is finally a useful app marketplace for Windows users. I would wager that most users can now find all the apps they need on Windows via the Microsoft Store, and that's great news for everyone. The only app I can think of that most people use that isn't in the store is <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/google-chrome" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/google-chrome" rel="external nofollow">Google Chrome</a>, but at this point that's Google's fault, not Microsoft's.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									All the other big name browsers, from Opera to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/firefox" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/firefox" rel="external nofollow">Firefox</a>, are available to download in the Microsoft Store. Even apps like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/adobe" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/adobe" rel="external nofollow">Adobe</a> Creative Cloud, OBS Studio, Apple Music, and Paint.NET are available in the Store. If you are an app developer building a Windows app, there is no excuse to not have your app listed in the Microsoft Store today.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									It's not only more convenient for the end user, but it's also safer, too. The Microsoft Store does a great job at surfacing the officially listed store apps for developers that put them in there. The same cannot be said for web search engines, which will often place sponsored links above the actual website where an app developer has hosted their app.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									At this point, we really should be encouraging more app developers to get their apps into the store for this reason alone. Google, Valve, and others are letting their own users down by not being included here, and that's a shame. It's no longer Microsoft's fault if an app isn't in the Microsoft Store, as there's no policy stopping them from being there. We need to start pointing the finger at developers.

										<p>
											If you're not using the Microsoft Store today because of the reputation it gained over the last decade, it's time to reevaluate that mindset and give it another try. The Microsoft Store is an entirely different beast today, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/the-microsoft-store-on-windows-11-is-about-to-get-even-more-useful" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/the-microsoft-store-on-windows-11-is-about-to-get-even-more-useful" rel="external nofollow">embracing an open-platform ideology</a> that has allowed its selection of apps to expand exponentially. It really is at a point where most of the Windows apps you likely use are available in there.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											For the apps that aren't, it's time to start encouraging those app developers to get a move on. Of course, Windows will always be an open platform and app developers are free to distribute their apps in any way they like, but if they want to make finding and downloading their apps easier and safer, it's time to consider the Microsoft Store.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											A lot of apps in the Microsoft Store don't even require a Microsoft Account to download them, so if you've not been using it because you think it requires an online account, that's not actually true. There really isn't an excuse not to give it a try!
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											Of course, everything mentioned in this article also applies to Windows 10, not just Windows 11. Microsoft brought the Windows 11 version of the Microsoft Store to Windows 10, meaning all these improvements are also available on that platform. So give it a try if you're still using Windows 10.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											The days of the Microsoft Store on Windows being a pain to use with a sorry selection of apps is well and truly over. It's genuinely great now!

Now, Nvidia has detailed how it plans to support the aged, but <a automate_uuid="b505cbce-c9de-46ba-bb29-5b21d09c95a9" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-reaches-a-new-all-time-high-share-among-gamers/" rel="external nofollow">still popular</a>, operating system as it focuses on future driver updates for its GeForce graphics cards.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Interestingly, Nvidia will be providing drivers for Windows 10 for an extra year after Microsoft ends support for it. This means that Nvidia Game Ready drivers will remain incoming to Windows 10 until at least October 2026. The OS is officially reaching end of support on October 14, 2025
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company said that this decision was made to make sure that owners of its graphics card will keep receiving optimizations for upcoming games and applications.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We’re extending Windows 10 Game Ready Driver support for all GeForce RTX GPUs to October 2026, a year beyond the operating system’s end-of-life, to ensure users continue to receive the latest day-0 optimizations for new games and apps," it explained.

The company says that this October, a graphics driver will reach the TITAN V, GeForce GTX 10, and GTX 900 series, and other cards from these lineups, containing final optimizations. Following this, only quarterly security updates will be delivered.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Volta, Pascal, and Maxwell security updates are slated to continue until October 2028. Nvidia says that this level of support is "well beyond industry norms."

	Nvidia will cover gamers who take advantage of Windows 10's extended updates.
</h3>

<p>
	If you last updated your gaming PC in late 2016, Nvidia has <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/mafia-the-old-country-geforce-game-ready-driver/" rel="external nofollow">two pieces of bad news</a> to share with you today. First, it will no longer support the Maxwell, Pascal, or Volta GPU architectures with new Game Ready graphics driver updates after October 2025. That means GeForce GPUs from the GTX 900 and 10-series, including aging but enduringly popular cards like the GeForce GTX 1060, will no longer get optimized driver releases for new games starting this fall.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Second, Nvidia says it will wind down all driver support for Windows 10 in October of 2026. This is one year past Microsoft's officially announced end-of-support date for Windows 10, but it will cover users who choose to take advantage of <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/06/microsoft-extends-free-windows-10-security-updates-into-2026-with-strings-attached/" rel="external nofollow">the year of free extended security updates</a> (ESUs) that Microsoft is offering to home users (we have <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/07/how-to-get-another-free-year-of-updates-for-your-windows-10-pc/" rel="external nofollow">a guide on how to get those updates</a> if you want them). After that, people who want to continue getting graphics drivers for their Nvidia GPUs, including newer models in the RTX 40- and 50-series, will need to upgrade to Windows 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta GPUs won't be totally abandoned after 2025; Nvidia says it will release quarterly security updates for these cards through October 2028. These updates won't optimize performance or fix bugs in any new games, but if you still have an older or hand-me-down PC using one of these cards to play <em>Minecraft </em>or <em>Roblox</em>, you won't be leaving yourself open to GPU-related security exploits.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Nvidia has dropped hints that the end of support for these older GPUs was coming. The company <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/01/nvidia-winding-down-support-for-older-gpus-including-the-legendary-750-ti-and-1060/" rel="external nofollow">announced back in January</a> that CUDA support for the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures was considered "feature complete" and was being frozen. This is the first time since 2021 that Nvidia has dropped support for older GPUs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As for Windows 10, Microsoft has been pushing users toward Windows 11 for years, including by <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/11/microsoft-pushes-full-screen-ads-for-copilot-pcs-on-windows-10-users/" rel="external nofollow">using full-screen ads</a> encouraging people to buy new Copilot+ PCs, but the older operating system still has a sizable user base. <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/directx/" rel="external nofollow">According to the Steam Hardware Survey</a>, Windows 10 is in decline, but it still powers over a third of the PCs in the survey as of June 2025, compared to a little over 60 percent for Windows 11.
</p>

	Chrome 138 received a point update <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2025/07/16/google-138-point-update-fixes-another-0-day-security-issue/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">a couple of weeks ago</a> to fix a 0-day security threat, but <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2025/07/28/europes-age-verification-proposal-under-flak-for-google-dependency/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Google</a> released another one a few days ago to patch more security issues in its browser.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the vulnerabilities has been tracked as <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-8292" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">CVE-2025-8292</a>, which has a high severity rating. The issue is described as Use after free in Media Stream, which could be potentially exploited by a remote attacker who targeted heap corruption via a specially crafted HTML page. The bug was reported by an anonymous researcher on June 19, 2025. This bug does not appear to have been exploited by attackers.

The security fixes were patched in Google Chrome 138.0.7204.183/.184 for Windows, Mac and 138.0.7204.183 for Linux, 138.0.7204.179 for Android. Google says that these versions are rolling out to users. But, just a day after releasing the update, the Mountain View company has already released an <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2025/07/early-stable-update-for-desktop.html" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">early stable update</a> for the next major version of Chrome.

	<strong>Google Chrome 139 early stable update released</strong>
</h3>

<p>
	Chrome version 139.0.7258.66 for Windows and Mac, 139.0.7258.60 for iOS, 139.0.7258.62 is rolling out to a small percentage of users. Chrome for iOS adds an option to customize the new tab page. Tap the Edit icon at the top of the screen &gt; Themes, shortcuts and more. I don't have access to the feature, so it is likely rolling out to users.

<p>
	On a side note, Apple has <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/124152" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">updated Safari</a> to version 18.6 with some security patches, including a fix for CVE-2025-6558, which Google fixed in a Chrome update two weeks ago. It's worth mentioning that Chrome 138 is the last version to support macOS 11 Big Sur. Users will need to upgrade to macOS 12 or above to receive the Chrome 139 update and newer versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Chrome 140 will enter beta next week, and is <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://chromestatus.com/roadmap" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">expected to be released</a> at the end of August.

	Don't have a spare mouse? You can use your phone as a wireless mouse to work on your computer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Long story short, my mouse died recently. It's a Razer Viper Mini, the buttons work, so does the scroll wheel, but the cursor wouldn't move. I dismantled and cleaned it, but I think the sensor's a dud. So, while I was waiting for a new mouse to arrive, I decided to use my iPhone as a mouse.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There are probably <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2015/01/23/no-mouse-available-control-your-computer-with-your-smartphone/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">other software</a> that can do this, but I prefer to use KDE Connect, since I already use it for managing my phone's media. KDE Connect is free, open source, doesn't require an account to use. It works using your local Wi-Fi.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I'm using <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/07/26/linux-mint-22-is-an-attractive-option-for-migrating-away-from-windows/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Linux Mint</a> and an iPhone<a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/07/26/linux-mint-22-is-an-attractive-option-for-migrating-away-from-windows/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">,</a> but the process is the same on <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2025/07/29/windows-10-is-10-years-old-today/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows</a> and <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2025/07/10/android-will-soon-organize-your-notifications-using-ai/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Android</a>. I only tested Windows/Android briefly, but it worked fine. Disappointingly, it did not work on <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2025/06/10/macos-tahoe-26-announced-with-improved-spotlight-continiuity-features/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">macOS 26.</a>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	1. <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://kdeconnect.kde.org/download.html" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Download KDE Connect</a> on your desktop (Windows, macOS and Linux).
</p>

<p>
	2. Download KDE Connect on your <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kde.kdeconnect_tp" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Android</a> mobile device or <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kde-connect/id1580245991" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">iPhone.</a>
</p>

<p>
	3. Pair your devices by using the app.
</p>

<p>
	4. On your phone's KDE Connect, tap on the computer's name.
</p>

<p>
	5. Select Remote Input.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That's it, you can use your phone's screen like a touchpad and use it as your computer's mouse. Tap and hold your finger on the screen to move the mouse around. Tap on the blank space to the left of the scroll wheel to left-click, or tap the right side to right-click. The scroll wheel can be dragged up and down, just like how you would scroll pages on your phone. This can be annoying since dragging downwards scrolls up, and dragging upwards scrolls down the page. There is a bit of input lag, so watch out for that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Tap on the three-dot menu button to view additional commands like the sensitivity slider, haptics-style selector, etc. In addition to using it as a mouse, you can also use KDE Connect as a wireless keyboard, by tapping on the keyboard icon at the top of the app. You should be aware that since your phone's screen will be awake while you use it for remote input, your battery is going to drain pretty quickly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's not the most convenient thing, but it's better than nothing when you don't have a mouse, but want something to work with. I wouldn't recommend it for gaming, but it should work fine for browsing, and basic usage.

And with the month drawing to a close, we only have Microsoft 365 Copilot left to cover, so without further ado, let's dive right in.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This time around, there are 15 new capabilities in total. Broadly speaking, 4 are intended for admins and the rest are for consumers. We'll start with the admin-facing capabilities which include a preview of the agent's usage report, which also covers Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat in the Microsoft 365 admin center. There are also new controls in place for budget thresholds for Copilot usage along with configurable alerts, <a automate_uuid="e69484fb-86aa-41e0-9d7c-1bdf7eedf007" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-new-copilot-search-experience-is-microsofts-vision-for-an-integrated-future/" rel="external nofollow">a new Copilot Search experience</a>, and a separate setting for IT admins to pin Microsoft 365 Copilot to the Windows Taskbar for their organization's members.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Other enhancements include the ability to drill down to your direct team or an indirect group in the Copilot Dashboard to monitor and compare adoption and impact. Organizations can also govern agents more strictly through embedded knowledge sources and enforcement of Purview policies. Finally, Purview now offers more visibility and control over Copilot and other AI agents.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Switching gears to the consumer-facing side of Copilot, we have voice interaction with Copilot Chat on mobile landing and, enhancements to the conversation history through unification across platforms, both landing next month. <a automate_uuid="e73cb5b3-d648-4c69-9c58-19adac982963" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/here-are-all-the-new-features-microsoft-added-to-teams-in-july-2025/" rel="external nofollow">Interpreter powered by Copilot has also arrived in Teams</a>, and so has the ability to use Copilot during a live Teams call, which is useful when you are not allowed to record or transcribe a meeting.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On the side of Office applications, we have audio overviews for content written in Word, the ability to preserve formatting while generating content, and a brief prompt history in the drafting experience. Meanwhile, classic Outlook customers will soon be able to leverage agents in Copilot, while PowerPoint users utilizing Copilot can already reference Excel files and use them as a source.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That's not all, though. If you want to view the entire change log, <a automate_uuid="d80222da-e435-4631-ae87-064d28191194" href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365copilotblog/what%E2%80%99s-new-in-microsoft-365-copilot--july-2025/4438253" rel="external nofollow">check out Microsoft's massive roundup here</a>.

	A couple of days ago, we detailed all the new features that <a automate_uuid="bc0786db-0abb-4fc1-9ead-b4c963aee261" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/here-are-all-the-new-features-microsoft-added-to-excel-in-july-2025/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft introduced in Excel during the month of July 2025</a>. Now, right on cue, the company has published the change log for Teams, <a automate_uuid="d0d8ddaf-1b96-4ddb-a945-d1c6f4a02492" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/here-are-all-the-new-features-microsoft-added-to-teams-in-june-2025/" rel="external nofollow">as usual</a>, and it is expectedly massive.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Starting off with platform enhancements, we have a couple of items. The search bar will now surface suggestions for apps and agents dynamically too as you are typing. In addition, it is now easier to share agents: you can either click on the share icon as you hover over an agent profile, or you can open <strong>+Apps</strong> from the three-dot menu of an agent chat and right-click to share it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On the chat and collaboration front, Copilot Chat is now just a click away, as it will be pinned to the top of your chat list. Other improvements include the <a automate_uuid="b7d680a1-2d69-412c-86e0-69ab2a265b31" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-teams-gets-threads-and-a-rather-weird-new-feature/" rel="external nofollow">ability to trigger pre-configured workflows through emoji reactions</a>, search for specific emoji, customize the size of your notifications, and a revamped chat and channels experience in the Education variant of Teams for a more streamlined UX.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="team town hall" class="ipsImage" height="417" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/05/1716909372_townhall.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Switching gears to meetings, webinars, and town halls, the interpreter is now generally available. This paid service enables multilingual communication through real-time speech-to-speech conversions. Two hours of usage per month are bundled at no additional cost if you have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, but you'll have to pay more for additional usage. Similarly, sign language mode is now available, and so are intelligent meeting recaps for unscheduled town hall events on Android, and the ability to raise hands in town halls. Other enhancements to town halls include "ultra-low" latencies, new IT admin policies, and support for polls.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When it comes to workplace improvements for Places and Teams Rooms, the latter now packs facial recognition through Cloud IntelliFrame, along with insights for shared spaces in the Pro Management portal for IT admins.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, the following hardware is now Teams certified:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Biamp Ceiling Mic &amp; 4K Camera System for Medium and Large Teams Rooms
	</li>
	<li>
		Biamp All-in-One Video Bar Parlé VBC 2500a Teams Rooms System
	</li>
	<li>
		Biamp Audio Conference Bar and 4K Camera Teams Rooms System
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Notably, this isn't the entire change log, you can head over to <a automate_uuid="047170a6-4891-450c-8215-fe29553f1058" href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoftteamsblog/what%E2%80%99s-new-in-microsoft-teams--july-2025/4438302" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's lengthy blog post here</a> to find out what's new for security, Teams Phone, and frontline worker solutions.

This deadline will likely impact milions of PCs over the globe as many simply can't upgrade to Windows 11 due to its requirements for processors and the <a automate_uuid="7f537c94-1450-46f1-8182-e118b0228f61" href="https://www.neowin.net/editorials/the-average-windows-user-doesnt-care-about-tpm-20/" rel="external nofollow">dreaded TPM 2.0</a>. However, there are third-party tools which can unofficially give aging PCs a new lease on life, <a automate_uuid="b17c7fa8-c95f-4998-9dc6-673aef6c6eb2" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/popular-tool-for-skipping-windows-11-requirements-updated-with-important-new-feature/" rel="external nofollow">and one such example is Flyby11</a>. Now, the popular utility has received an update which gives it a new name and some fresh capabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The latest update to Flyby11 rebrands it to <strong>Flyoobe</strong> with version 0.35. The "oobe" in the name refers to "out of the box experience", because the app is pivoting focus to simplifying the OOBE experience by debloating Windows, in a way. The developer believes that skipping Windows 11's requirement checks is only part of the equation, the rest has to do with building a solution that respects user choices rather than bowing to Microsoft's default configurations.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As such, the changelog for Flyoobe version 0.35:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Expanded the Personalization page: You can now switch theme modes for both apps and Windows separately
	</li>
	<li>
		Improved visual customization broadcasting: Changes are now instantly reflected across the system, similar Windows and the Settings app
	</li>
	<li>
		Added an option to the Getting Started page for adding the device to a domain (currently via SystemPropertiesComputerName).
	</li>
	<li>
		Overhauled the Windows Update page for clearer, more responsive feedback on what’s being downloaded and installed.
	</li>
	<li>
		Refined navigation controls: Forward (center-right) and Back (top-left) buttons are now aligned horizontally—left and right—for a more intuitive feel. Also relocated the Refresh button from top-left to top-right for consistency
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixed several issues related to custom display scaling.
	</li>
</ul>

	Those who prefer the classic Flyby11 experience can still use the assets from the <a automate_uuid="9abb87a8-8ab1-44e8-938e-879a01800f1b" href="https://github.com/builtbybel/Flyby11/releases/tag/0.35" rel="external nofollow">latest GitHub release</a> to download that version too. Meanwhile, Flyoobe will be flagged by Microsoft Defender occasionally, but the developer says that this is nothing to worry about as Microsoft has committed to remove the false detection soon. In the mean time, you can download Flyoobe from the <a automate_uuid="58722a4b-51b5-4ecc-b01a-c7deea6e6f05" href="https://github.com/builtbybel/Flyby11/releases/tag/0.35" rel="external nofollow">GitHub page here</a> if you trust the developer. Do keep in mind that modiying a Windows image carries its own set of risks so only use the utility if you accept those risks.

	If you're someone who uses online Microsoft services in a personal or professional capacity, you are likely very familiar with the Microsoft sign-in portal. It's the webpage where you enter your credentials. Right now, if you attempt to log in to your Microsoft account online, you'll notice that it contains the authentication elements in the center of the screen and the background has a soft pastel gradient. Microsoft is looking to refresh this look within the next couple of months.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Starting from August 2025, personal Microsoft accounts will begin seeing a new background image on the authentication page. The light gradient background will be replaced by another with a frosted glass appearance, as can be seen in the header image of this article. Microsoft has <a automate_uuid="4f797b05-88e0-4e9e-9835-458a97e0233d" href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft-entra-blog/a-fresh-look-for-the-microsoft-authentication-background/4435199" rel="external nofollow">emphasized</a> that this image follows <a automate_uuid="d015a5f6-3e8d-4d7e-b612-19aa0258265b" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/project-neon-microsoft-announces-new-039fluent-design-system039-for-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">Fluent Design aesthetics</a> and offers a cleaner, distraction-free, and consistent experience, while also modernizing the UX.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The image will also roll out to Entra work and education accounts from September 29, 2025. It is important to note that no admin action is required for this visual update as it will be applied automatically. However, if an organization has set up a background image to reflect their company's branding, that will be given preference.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="The updated Microsoft authentication experience with dark mode" class="ipsImage" height="429" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/07/1753919838_frame_2018778752_1.webp">

	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	Next, personal accounts should begin seeing dark mode arrive for their sign-in experience as early as next month, but it's dependent on your browser and device settings, which means that it should ideally reflect your system's current theme. As can be seen in above, it also changes the background image, while retaining the same design. It's currently unclear when this UX will arrive for Entra work and school customers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft says that it has already tested these changes with 300 customers and leveraged their feedback to design these experiences. The company believes that establishing a distraction-free UX that is consistent with its design philosophy also helps build trust, which is essential when providing an authentication flow.

	Microsoft is rolling out a new Canary build to Windows Insiders, offering them a new batch of general fixes and under-the-hood improvements for the Settings app (the search box is now centered), desktop backgrounds, audio, and more. Build 27913 is here with the following changes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		[<strong>General</strong>]

		<ul>
			<li>

			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		[<strong>Settings</strong>]
		<ul>
			<li>
				The search box in Settings will now be located at the top center to deliver a more consistent and better search experience.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		[<strong>General</strong>]
		<ul>
			<li>
				Fixed an issue where the Windows Vista boot sound was unexpectedly being used instead of the Windows 11 boot sound.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		[<strong>Desktop background</strong>]
		<ul>
			<li>
				Did some underlying work to help address issues which could result in the desktop background unexpectedly becoming black rather than displaying the expected wallpaper image. If you continue experiencing issues, please don’t hesitate to report them in the Feedback Hub under Desktop Environment &gt; Background and Wallpaper.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>[Settings]</strong>
		<ul>
			<li>
				Fixed an issue in the latest builds which could cause Settings to crash when interacting with the options under Settings &gt; System &gt; Power &amp; Battery.
			</li>
			<li>
				Fixed an underlying issue where some of the apostrophes across text in Settings and settings-related dialogs were not displaying correctly and were showing random characters.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		[<strong>Audio</strong>]
		<ul>
			<li>
				Fixed an issue which could result in audio not working a few seconds after casting to a TV.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		[<strong>Other</strong>]
		<ul>
			<li>
				Fixed an issue in the latest builds causing a small number of Insiders to experience repeated bugchecks with KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE after upgrading. This may occur when connecting to VPN.
			</li>
			<li>
				Fixed an underlying issue which could result in acrylic in certain apps unexpectedly being transparent.
			</li>
			<li>
				Made another fix for the issue causing Group Policy Editor to not display correctly in certain languages (like Chinese), showing large blank areas.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is the list of known bugs:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		[<strong>General</strong>]

		<ul>
			<li>
				[IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] If you are joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel or retail, you will lose Windows Hello pin and biometrics to sign into your PC with error 0xd0000225 and error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available”. You should be able to re-create your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN”.
			</li>
			<li>
				[NEW] The progress wheel may show as a rectangle glyph instead of rendering correctly when upgrading to this build.
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
</ul>

	Microsoft has already <a automate_uuid="a200e61c-137d-46ca-bac1-f0eaf77cae61" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/redesigned-windows-11-start-menu-what-users-wanted-and-what-microsoft-delivered/" rel="external nofollow">addressed plenty of complaints</a> about Windows 11's taskbar and Start menu, including the ability to disable the Recommended section. However, there is still one annoying quirk that has been nagging me and other multi-monitor users for many years: the inability to open the notification center on any display other than the primary.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Taskbars on secondary displays in Windows 11 do not display the tray area. Instead, they only show the non-clickable current time and date. As such, if you want to open the notification center, you have to move the cursor to the main display, which is an extra chore if you have two or three displays. Microsoft is now addressing that by letting you open the notification center and the calendar flyout by clicking the taskbar clock on any monitor.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The updated taskbar <a automate_uuid="8f5f3d02-1637-4ba9-bf7f-afb659254f65" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-gets-an-important-taskbar-update-and-more-in-the-latest-builds/" rel="external nofollow">is currently rolling out to Dev and Beta Channels</a>. Here is what Microsoft said in the release notes:
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		To address your feedback, we are extending the functionality of Notification Center to secondary monitors. This means you will be able to see your calendar on any of your monitors as well as the option to show a bigger clock with seconds above calendar. You will be able to open Notification Center on any monitor by clicking the date and time in the system tray of your taskbar.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	If you are running the latest build but do not have this update yet, you can use the ViVeTool app to force-enable it. Here is how to do that:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Download ViVeTool <a automate_uuid="9082d4cc-e1e1-4204-865d-9359485f4604" href="https://github.com/thebookisclosed/ViVe/releases" rel="external nofollow">from </a><a automate_uuid="2af82be9-dc54-4d49-8cf7-79d01853b69c" href="https://github.com/thebookisclosed/ViVe/releases" rel="external nofollow">GitHub</a> and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder.
	</li>
	<li>
		Launch Command Prompt as Administrator and go to the ViVeTool folder using the CD command.
	</li>
	<li>
		Type <strong>vivetool /enable /id:38762814 </strong> and press <strong>Enter</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Restart your computer.
	</li>
</ol>

	It is a big day for Windows on ARM, as Adobe announced that some of its most popular creative apps are finally available natively on ARM-powered Windows devices. Those apps include Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and Media Encoder.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Back in August 2024, <a automate_uuid="55962df9-1623-426e-a2bc-25ddc1b6c0d5" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/premiere-pro-is-now-available-on-windows-on-arm/" rel="external nofollow">Adobe allowed</a> Windows on ARM users to run Premiere Pro in emulated mode. However, having a native app enables significantly better performance and energy efficiency on Windows PCs with Snapdragon X Series processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The apps are currently in beta, and they have several limitations, some of which will remain there even after the apps exit beta.
</p>

<p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		</li>
		<li>
			The Cinema 4D renderer and related C4D features (e.g. Cineware) are not yet available.
		</li>
		<li>
			Third-party plug-ins will not work with the native builds and must be updated for WinARM. We are in contact with many third-party developers and will be releasing an SDK update for WinARM.
		</li>

</p>

<p>
	A separate study revealed that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/despite-claims-of-generative-ai-being-a-fad-it-could-automate-54-of-banking-jobs" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/despite-claims-of-generative-ai-being-a-fad-it-could-automate-54-of-banking-jobs" rel="external nofollow">54% of banking jobs can be automated using AI</a>. However, it's unclear if the banking sector will embrace the change, especially with the critical <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-addresses-windows-recall-backlash-promises-to-fix-security-issues-and-make-it-opt-in" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-addresses-windows-recall-backlash-promises-to-fix-security-issues-and-make-it-opt-in" rel="external nofollow">privacy and security issues riddling AI</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the past few months, tech leaders have made bold statements about the potential effect <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" data-before-rewrite-redirect="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/artificial-intelligence" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence" rel="external nofollow">AI</a> might have on the job market. For instance, Microsoft co-founder <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/bill-gates-says-ai-will-replace-humans-for-most-things" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/bill-gates-says-ai-will-replace-humans-for-most-things" rel="external nofollow">Bill Gates recently indicated that AI will replace humans "for most things"</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the philanthropic billionaire indicated that we'll have the opportunity to exclusively preserve some tasks for humans. Gates joked that no one would like to watch computers playing baseball, for example.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Perhaps more interestingly, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/bill-gates-3-professions-will-remain-indispensable-for-now" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/bill-gates-3-professions-will-remain-indispensable-for-now" rel="external nofollow">the executive indicated that only 3 professions will survive the AI revolution</a>, including energy experts, biologists, and coders. Gates indicated that these professions are too complex to automate and are heavily reliant on human intervention.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/bill-gates" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/bill-gates" rel="external nofollow">Bill Gates</a> says coding is among the professions that are farthest from automation using AI. He claimed that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence/bill-gates-coding-will-remain-a-human-profession-centuries-later" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence/bill-gates-coding-will-remain-a-human-profession-centuries-later" rel="external nofollow">the profession will remain a <strong>100% human profession</strong>, even 100 years from now</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Gates, humans will still play an important role in the coding process, including identifying and correcting errors, refining algorithms, and bolstering AI development. He further argued that AI-powered tools can't replicate human creativity and judgment.

As such, he recommended alternative career paths like manufacturing, farming, and biology for the next generation. The executive indicated that these jobs are future-proof in an AI-driven world.

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Similarly, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman echoed the same sentiments, indicating that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/work-productivity/amazon-cloud-boss-echoes-nvidia-ceos-of-coding-being-dead-in-the-water" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/work-productivity/amazon-cloud-boss-echoes-nvidia-ceos-of-coding-being-dead-in-the-water" rel="external nofollow">the fast adoption of AI in organizations will prompt software developers to stop coding</a>, forcing them to upskill in the field to gain new talents.

	Working at one of the so-called Big Tech companies is a dream job for many. It offers unique perks, from building apps and services used by millions worldwide to contributing to technologies that shape the future. At the same time, Big Tech employees often enjoy salaries and benefits that professionals at other firms can only aspire to.

<p>
	While this sweet dream has <a automate_uuid="1e1f7070-4ea4-4e60-bf42-abb47e75e23b" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-finally-addresses-the-elephant-in-the-room-kind-of/" rel="external nofollow">turned into a nightmare</a> for many tech employees in recent years due to <a automate_uuid="af50a33b-17ea-4b76-97b9-ada7ada3dc1f" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-cuts-another-9000-jobs-as-it-continues-to-say-ai-wont-replace-humans/" rel="external nofollow">widespread layoffs</a>, Big Tech workers still enjoy significantly higher salaries compared to those in other sectors.

The document includes compensation details ranging from entry-level roles to distinguished engineers.

	After a decade, Windows 10 is heading into retirement. Here's what Microsoft is taking away, and why it'll be hard to move on.
</h3>

<p>
	On July 29, 2015, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-10" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-10" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-10" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10</a> launched with the promise to be the "last version of Windows," and it quickly became one of the most popular operating systems, offering better stability, familiarity, and refinement after the rough Windows 8.x era. However, as the operating system turns 10, the end is officially closing in. Support for this version will end on October 14, 2025, after which no further free updates will be available unless you enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I've used every version (from 3.x and onward), and even though <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-xp" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-xp" rel="external nofollow">Windows XP</a> and 7 were great systems, Windows 10 has been uniquely special in terms of usability, performance, and design.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Sure, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-11" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11</a> is now the version that looks to the future, but it drops a number of the simple and useful features that users really appreciated on Windows 10.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These are the features I'll miss the most as we prepare to transition into the next chapter of the operating system.
</p>

	<span>My list of features I'll miss about Windows 10</span>

	As Windows 10 turns another year and approaches its end of life, here are the features I'll miss the most.

<h2 id="1-clean-and-functional-start-menu-design-3">

<p>
	Originally, the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/how-the-windows-start-menu-has-evolved-in-the-last-50-years-of-microsoft" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/how-the-windows-start-menu-has-evolved-in-the-last-50-years-of-microsoft" rel="external nofollow">Start menu</a> on Windows 10 found the right balance between design and customization. It combined the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-7" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-7" rel="external nofollow">Windows 7</a>-style list with Live Tiles from Windows 8, allowing users to pin apps, folders, and websites in a layout that was familiar and customizable.

										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											Even today, for users with older systems, sticking with Windows 10 still makes sense, even if support is ending.

													Windows 10 is virtually the last version for consumers that is not an AI-centric system. While AI might be the future, not everyone is ready for or wants it.
												</p>

												<p>

												</p>

												<p>
													In contrast, Windows 11 continues to push AI into every part of the operating system, from the Start menu to the Settings app, even if you didn't ask for it.

												<p>
													On Windows 10, you have an operating system that, while it continues to collect telemetry data in the background, doesn't feel like you're being watched all the time.

												<h2 id="6-easy-setup-with-local-account-during-installation-3">

												</h2>

												<p>
													Windows 10 allowed users (especially on the Home edition) to easily set up a local account during the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE). On Windows 11, the setup experience forces users toward signing in with a Microsoft account. Windows 10 may be turning 10, but its usability and design choices remain relevant today, so much so that (at the time of this writing) it's still the most used version of the operating system with 48.89 percent market share (Windows 11 sits at 47.83 percent), according to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://gs.statcounter.com/windows-version-market-share/desktop/worldwide" href="https://gs.statcounter.com/windows-version-market-share/desktop/worldwide" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">StartCounter</a>.

	It's a strange, bittersweet day for Windows, as Microsoft's previous-generation operating system simultaneously <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-10/windows-10-is-10-years-old-today-lets-look-back-at-10-controversial-and-defining-moments-in-its-history" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-10/windows-10-is-10-years-old-today-lets-look-back-at-10-controversial-and-defining-moments-in-its-history" rel="external nofollow">celebrates its 10th anniversary with a wealth of defining moments for Windows 10</a> while its steadfast users prepare for an impending <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-10" rel="external nofollow">end-of-life status due in October</a>. Opinions are often divided on the various iterations of the company's paid OS, but Windows 10 stands as a more universally praised attempt that had a particularly interesting pitch.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides the unusual passing-over on Windows 9, an omission that itself is up for debate as to its origins, the skip-ahead to Windows 10 felt like a more significant leap forward than a simple generational level-up.

<p>
	Microsoft promised a unified experience across its broad assortment of hardware as part of its <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-onecore-shows-some-microsoft-linkedin-pages" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-onecore-shows-some-microsoft-linkedin-pages" rel="external nofollow">"OneCore" ecosystem</a>, essentially scaling Windows apps to practically any form factor, even away from a traditional desktop.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It was certainly alluring, and its marketing was appealing to me, particularly as a disgruntled user who so disliked the initial tablet-centric style of Windows 8 and its <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-8-start-screen" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-8-start-screen" rel="external nofollow">"Metro" Start menu design philosophy</a>. After falling back to the comfortable familiarity of <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-7" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-7" rel="external nofollow">Windows 7</a> for a while, I'd eventually come back to a conventional desktop in Windows 8.1, but not before traveling a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/here-are-specific-upgrade-paths-all-versions-windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/here-are-specific-upgrade-paths-all-versions-windows-10" rel="external nofollow">free upgrade path to Windows 10</a>, alongside buying a wealth of Microsoft-branded devices to fill up my home.

			Yeah, I bought into it pretty heavily. It's fair to say that I gradually went all-in, buying into Microsoft's vision with an onslaught on my wallet that was justified because I felt as though I was "future proofing" myself. I picked up an <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-one-four-years-later" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-one-four-years-later" rel="external nofollow">Xbox One</a> console with a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-launches-xbox-one-digital-tv-tuner-europe" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-launches-xbox-one-digital-tv-tuner-europe" rel="external nofollow">TV tuner add-on</a> in the United Kingdom, eager for a DVR function that Microsoft promised would come in a later update to ensure I'd never have to use my TV provider's set-top box ever again.
		</p>

		<p>
			Unsurprisingly, at least in hindsight, the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/i-love-you-xbox-dont-cancel-things-your-fans" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/i-love-you-xbox-dont-cancel-things-your-fans" rel="external nofollow">DVR function for Xbox One never materialized</a>, much to the disappointment of the few users who were expecting it, including me; frustrated by the forced reorganization of my entertainment setup after the first dream died.

It was a great fitness companion that paired well with the Lumia, and eventually, partially well with the slew of boring Android phones that I was slipping between, never living up to the hype of the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-1020-sample-photos" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-1020-sample-photos" rel="external nofollow">Lumia 1020's glorious camera</a> that I always craved but never had a chance to try.

											It's more than I can say for my Xbox One, Microsoft Band, and Windows Phone that are collecting dust as little more than paperweight ornaments, still trying to connect to lifeless Microsoft apps and services that were axed years ago. Now, Windows 11 just feels like the obvious choice, standing as the world's most compatible and widely supported OS, but I still flirt with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/linux" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/linux" rel="external nofollow">Linux</a> via <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/steamos" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/steamos" rel="external nofollow">SteamOS</a> and Fedora KDE, reliant on a UI that resembles Microsoft's iconic desktop.

										<p>
											For me, Windows 10 quietly fades away in the background, collected with other Microsoft-made fascinations of its time, but at least it stands as the best example among them. For those who cling to it with adoration and even an obligation to certain apps — I get it — but a decade is long enough. It's time to make a decision, whether that's with an upgrade to Windows 11, sticking around with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-10/free-windows-10-extended-security-updates-are-now-yours-to-claim-but-theres-a-catch" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-10/free-windows-10-extended-security-updates-are-now-yours-to-claim-but-theres-a-catch" rel="external nofollow">extended security updates</a>, or finding a replacement OS elsewhere.

	Photos app fix and a pile of security updates.
</h3>

<p>
	Apple's next-generation software updates are just a couple of months away, but Apple isn't done with last year's releases just yet. Apple has released iOS 18.6, iPadOS 18.6, macOS Sequoia 15.6, watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6 to the public today, fixing an issue with sharing movies from the Photos app but mostly patching a long list of security vulnerabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/124147" rel="external nofollow">iOS</a>, iPadOS, and <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/124149" rel="external nofollow">macOS</a>, the list of resolved CVEs covers everything from the Metal graphics API to WebKit to networking to filesystem permissions issues. All told, each of these updates patches over two dozen vulnerabilities, and the other OS updates cover many of the same flaws. According to Apple's release notes, at least, none of these vulnerabilities are being actively exploited in the wild—you should patch as soon as you can, but there appear to be no known zero-day vulnerabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For iOS and iPadOS users in the EU, the updates also include a mechanism for installing alternate app stores and for installing apps directly from websites, in accordance with the EU's Digital Markets Act.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Many of the security fixes are also available for older operating systems that Apple is still maintaining, mostly for people who can't update their devices to the latest versions. The <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/124148" rel="external nofollow">iPadOS 17.7.9 update</a> covers several tablets that were dropped by iPadOS 18, and <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/124151" rel="external nofollow">macOS Ventura 13.7.7</a> and <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/124150" rel="external nofollow">macOS Sonoma 14.7.7</a> will cover <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/06/one-last-look-at-software-support-as-macos-26-tahoe-winds-down-the-intel-mac-era/" rel="external nofollow">fading Intel Macs</a> that were dropped by newer releases.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	All of these operating systems will be superseded in the fall by new releases, unified under version number 26. The first public betas of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and other updates were released last week.

	Recently, we reported on <a automate_uuid="8d77546a-a3ed-4cf3-9716-39b2255bcfcd" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/libreoffice-calls-out-microsoft-for-using-complex-file-formats-to-lock-in-office-users/" rel="external nofollow">LibreOffice, accusing Microsoft of intentionally using complex file formats</a> as a tactic to lock in users to Microsoft Office, hindering open source alternatives like LibreOffice.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, Microsoft has banned LibreOffice developer, Mike Kaganski, from using its services, citing an "activity that violates [its] Services Agreement".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a automate_uuid="a2af3850-b1d2-46a8-8cea-74f540a4d726" href="https://mikekaganski.wordpress.com/2025/07/25/microsoft-anybody-home/" rel="external nofollow">According to Mike,</a> this happened last Monday when he tried to send a technical email to the LibreOffice dev mailing list, which is a normal part of his routine, but Thunderbird returned an error saying the message couldn't be sent. His account was blocked upon retry, and he found himself completely logged out of his Microsoft account.
</p>

<p class="img-center">
	<img alt="Your account has been locked message" class="ipsImage" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/07/1753819931_image.webp">
</p>

<p>
	Kaganski guessed that his mail and account were getting flagged by a bot or something, since he was quite sure that nothing in the mail violated Microsoft's terms of service.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So he decided to file an appeal, a process which later made him call Redmond "miserably incompetent in IT." The automated system asked for his phone number, which he provided, only to be greeted by a "Try another method" error message.
</p>

<p class="img-center">
	<img alt="Try another verification method message" class="ipsImage" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/07/1753819914_image-1.webp">
</p>

<p>
	The problem was that there was no other method offered. He then decided to reach out to Microsoft support directly. After some digging, he found a link to contact the team, and there it was, a button asking him to "Sign in to Contact support".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, you might go, "Hold up, how is he supposed to sign in to contact support when his problem is that he can't sign in in the first place?" As Kaganski himself put it:
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Yes, you got it right. “Here is a page where we discuss problems signing in. You attempted our FAQ suggestions? You still can’t sign in? No problem! Contact our Support team, and we will solve your problem is a minute! But first, please sign in to continue.”
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	He eventually got to use his wife's account to file an appeal and finally received a message from support. The instructions inside asked him to go to the sign-in page and, when told the account is blocked, provide a phone number (something he had already tried). Microsoft ignored his detailed report of the failing process, marked his ticket as resolved without any real action, and simply closed it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	He is yet to recover his account. As for the email he was trying to send, he was later able to use Gmail, and it went through with no problem. If you are interested, you can<a automate_uuid="75f2e20e-3a9d-4d76-970e-2f80ca018117" href="https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice/2025-July/093574.html" rel="external nofollow"> read the full email for yourself</a> and see if it violates <a automate_uuid="81c0a4d9-930b-4e4c-9c25-f43be7f186f3" href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's services agreement.</a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mike's not the only person who's had their account locked recently, with seemingly no way to recover it. On the 17th of last month, Reddit user u/deus03690 <a automate_uuid="183eb82c-c0ea-47c7-b548-733d2d78eaa5" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-locks-windows-11-user-out-shows-how-easy-losing-data-from-forced-encryption-is/" rel="external nofollow">shared how Microsoft locked their account,</a> which, among other things, contained 30 years of "irreplaceable photos and work" on OneDrive.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Their appeal, like Mike's, has been fruitless so far. The user said <a automate_uuid="4c329a5f-e0f1-4b14-bbca-d46ce2a404d4" href="https://old.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1ldef4p/microsoft_locked_my_account_i_lost_30_years_of/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft reached out 10 days later,</a> asking them to fill out a recovery form and promising to help them "every step of the way," but they haven't heard from the company since.

	Most of us here at Neowin are well aware of Microsoft's tactics to get its customers to use its Edge browser. It only recently <a automate_uuid="85e76e34-b68a-4368-8728-55ec0144af31" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-stopped-injecting-edge-ads-on-chrome-website/" rel="external nofollow">stopped injecting massive banner ads for its own browser in Chrome's download portal</a>. However, tired of Redmond's continued efforts to manipulate customers into using Edge rather than other alternatives, Opera has filed a complaint against Microsoft in Brazil.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a automate_uuid="3f9e79ac-3fa0-4ce7-af9b-3fcc62d47bf5" href="https://www.theverge.com/news/715082/opera-microsoft-competition-complaint-edge-windows-tricks" rel="external nofollow">As reported by The Verge</a>, the reason for filing a complaint against Brazil rather than any other country is that it is one of Opera's main markets, where the company enjoys a respectable third place. Opera hopes that Brazil will set a global precedent for other countries if it rules in its favor.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Regarding the actual nature of the complaint, Opera alleges that Microsoft leverages "manipulative design tactics" and anti-competitive methods to force people into using Edge. Examples of this include third-party browsers not having the option of being bundled in a Windows installation, and the fact that Microsoft's own tools like Widgets, Teams, Search, and Outlook ignore a user's browser preferences and prioritize Edge when opening file like PDFs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If Brazil's regulator does rule in favor of Opera, the company will be seeking remedies like the ability to pre-install other browsers in Windows by default and restricting "dark patterns" that force customers to use Edge.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This isn't Opera's first legal battle with Microsoft in recent memory. A little over a year ago, it pressured the European Union (EU) to <a automate_uuid="f0b91613-8a92-4fbf-a5d0-1c28d0c16b85" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/opera-wants-the-eu-to-label-microsofts-edge-browser-as-a-gatekeeper-under-the-dma/" rel="external nofollow">label the Redmond tech firm's browser as a gatekeeper</a> under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) due to the dominance of Windows in the desktop space and the inability for users to select a browser through a choice screen. However, Opera was unsuccessful in its efforts. As such, it will be interesting to see if it can score a win against Microsoft with its complaint this time.
