Canonical only released Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka yesterday, but a major issue has already been found (and thankfully fixed); users couldn’t install or update Flatpak applications. According to a bug report on Launchpad, Flatpak installs were failing, displaying a critical error.

The failure was a direct result of changes to the AppArmor security profile for the fusermount3 utility, which is unable to unmount the revokefs-fuse filesystem. The issue was confirmed and affected multiple users.

The root cause of the problem was the fusermount3 utility, which was lacking additional privileges required to function properly in the new confinement setting, specifically failing during the unmounting of the revokefs-fuse filesystem. AppArmor denial logs confirmed that the process was being denied access to files like /run/mount/utab and related files.

To address the bug, AppArmor profile loosening was required. However, this creates some risk. If a user manually modified their profiles, an upgrade might cause conflicts and reject the necessary security fix.

Before the fix was issued, a temporary community-provided workaround was shared, which involved disabling the AppArmor profile for fusermount3 entirely to enable Flatpak usage, however, these shouldn’t be necessary anymore.

Given the wide impacts of the bug, it was marked as Critical importance in the AppArmor package, it has since been updated to Fix Released. To ensure the update reaches users quickly, an SRU (Stable Release Update) was urgently requested for the AppArmor package. The fix involves loosening the AppArmor confinement by adding file access rules, addressing the failure point in Ubuntu 25.10.

OneNote is a pretty useful note-taking app that allows many rich text and media formatting options, too. The good thing about it is that it is not necessarily bundled with a paid Microsoft 365 subscription, which means that you can download it as a standalone app from the Microsoft Store. Now, Microsoft has begun rolling out a "highly requested" feature for OneNote customers.

The feature in question is an image editing option, basically the ability to crop images directly in OneNote. Prior to today, users had to resort to external tools and applications to crop images before attaching them in OneNote, which is a fairly cumbersome process. With the latest functionality, completing this requirement should be a breeze, enabling users to remove background clutter or simply zoom in on the details.

In order to crop a picture, simply open the OneNote app, select an image or insert a new one, navigate to Picture Format in the app ribbon, and then utilize either of the two methods mentioned below:

Picture Format > Crop: Then, use your mouse to drag the crop handles and trim your picture manually.

Picture Format > Crop with Keyboard: Then, use your arrow keys (← ↑ → ↓) for fine, precise adjustments to the crop area.

Once you press Enter or click in any region outside of your image, the changes will be applied instantaneously.

This was apparently a highly requested item desired by many users, but it's interesting that it's only rolling out to OneNote on Windows for Insiders running Version 2509 (Build 19323.10000) or later. While cropped images are viewable on other platforms like Mac, Android, iOS, and the web, the OneNote app on these variants does not support the ability to crop images at this time. If you have some feedback for Microsoft regarding the implementation of cropping on Windows or have some suggestions regarding OneNote in general, simply use the Help > Feedback menu inside the app.

Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization support within the Linux kernel continues to be steadily enhanced and it's inched along further for Linux 6.18.

The Microsoft Hyper-V code for Linux 6.18 has now unified its guest entry code for both KVM and Microsoft Hyper-V (MSHV).

A new feature for Hyper-V users is Linux 6.18 now supporting Kexec and Kdump from Azure Confidential VMs (CVMs). The necessary integration is now in place for properly handling Kexec / Kdump in that confidential compute environment.

Microsoft has also now formally deprecated its Hyper-V frame-buffer "hyperv_fb" driver in favor of the Hyper-V Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) driver. This is no real surprise and arguably overdue. DRM/KMS drivers are far better than the Linux FB drivers that have been steadily but slowing being phased out.

Plus there are a variety of other Hyper-V changes with Linux 6.18 as outlined in this pull and already merged to mainline.

Mozilla is prepping a new VPN service called Firefox VPN. This will protect all traffic in the browser.

Mozilla has a VPN called, Mozilla VPN. It's basically Mullvad VPN. So, what's Firefox VPN. Well, unlike Mozilla VPN, which is a systemwide protection, Firefox VPN is said to be a browser-only VPN, so it won't protect web traffic from other apps on your computer.

A few months ago, Windows Report's Venkat discovered that Mozilla began testing something called Firefox IP Protection. It was laying the foundation for Firefox VPN. This is being tested currently, and is available for few users. A new article by Windows Report says that once the VPN is available, you will see an option on the toolbar, and will be prompted to sign in to your Mozilla account to set up the VPN. This experimental VPN will route your traffic through a server located in the U.S. Things are likely to change in the future, as it is still in beta. Don't like it? You will be able to disable the feature from the browser.

Is there a way to test Firefox VPN? The short answer is no. I enabled the browser.ipProtection.enabled flag in about:config, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I also tried searching for further VPN flags in about:config, and in about:studies, but couldn't find it in Firefox stable, beta and nightly channels on Linux and on a Windows 11 VM. After discussing this Venkat in a personal chat, I've come to the conclusion that there is no away around the Nimbus rollout, which is completely automated and randomized.

To learn more about Firefox VPN, I began looking around Bugzilla, and found a GitHub page that indicates that the IPP Add-on Activator extension that was introduced in the Firefox 143 branch, which we are on currently.

Bugzilla has several reports about IP Protection, one of which reveals a plan for a new section to manage Firefox VPN from the browser's Settings. It looks like users will be able to configure the VPN to be used on a per-site-basis, or choose to encrypt all traffic in Firefox, except for some that you may blacklist. There are plans to set the VPN to auto-start with the session, or only turn it on in Private Browsing mode.

The "upgrade to Mozilla VPN" option is also interesting, which all but confirms that Firefox VPN will be free.

Here's another listing that showcases the site management panel for Firefox VPN.

It will surely have some restrictions such as data limits, fewer server locations, compared to Mozilla's VPN. Mozilla wants Firefox to become "the best VPN-integrated browser on the market". As for its privacy policy, Firefox VPN will collect some technical data, including the connection quality, bandwidth usage for improving its service. It will not log your browsing history. I wouldn't be surprised if this is some sort of collaboration with Mullvad.

Opera, Microsoft, Brave, and even Vivaldi (Proton VPN) have a built-in VPN. Why not Firefox? It shouldn't be a problem as long as it is optional.

	What do you think?

It has been a week since Microsoft released Windows 11 version 25H2, the newest feature update for the OS. In case you weren't sure, the tech giant assured that it is fairly easy to upgrade using the required Enablement Package (eKB5054156).

The company also shared a full list of new features that the major update brings. However, not every promised feature made it as Microsoft confirmed that an important office-side feature called Administrator Protection is not here yet.

On the flip side, Microsoft has been adding in some new features too that were not previously announced when the new 25H2 feature update was released via KB5065789, Build 26200.6725 (Build 26100.6725 on 24H2).

Finally, multi-monitor users will be able to get the notification center on their secondary displays. The feature will probably be quite handy indeed for those who use two displays for work or play.

Now Microsoft is adding yet another new feature and this time it is specifically for developers or power users. The company has updated the changelog for KB5065789 (Build 26100.6725) to add that its new Edit CLI text editor is available now on Windows 1125H2 and 24H2:

"[Command line] New! Windows now includes Edit, a text editor you can use from the command line. To edit a file, open the Terminal app and type edit followed by the file name. Edit is open source and available on GitHub."

For those wondering, Edit is a new open-source "lightweight" command-line text editor on Windows. The tool is meant to address a long-standing gap as 64-bit Windows lacked a default CLI editor after the MS-DOS editor was retired. According to Microsoft, Edit is designed as a "modeless editor with a Text User Interface (TUI)" to lower the barrier for new users.

Microsoft is not exaggerating when it mentions the lightweight bit as Edit is under 250kB and should support multiple files, mouse-mode navigation, and more features.

TIME Magazine has had this tradition since the year 2000, where it spotlights impactful new creations. The list began with about 35 inventions but has expanded over the years to keep up with innovation.

In this year's list of notable creations, Mozilla Firefox's Shake to Summarize got a special mention, something Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, general manager of Firefox, calls a "testament to the incredible work of our UX, design, product, and engineering teams who brought this innovation to life."

Shake to summarize works exactly how you suspect: you physically shake your phone to generate a summary of a long article. This can be quite handy if you are trying to get the gist of a long read without scrolling through the whole thing. Other ways to activate the feature include tapping the thunderbolt icon in the address bar and selecting "Summarize Page" from the three-dot menu.

For now, the feature is limited to iOS users in the US with their system set to English, but Mozilla promises an Android version is in the works. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer running iOS 26, Apple Intelligence generates the summaries on the device. For older iPhones or those on earlier iOS versions, the page text is sent to Mozilla's servers for processing.

This is not the first time a browser or a browser feature has appeared in TIME's annual list. The Arc browser got a main spot back in 2023 for its design, which strayed away from the traditional browser layout we're used to. Instead of tabs at the top, Arc uses a sidebar to manage everything. Other non-traditional elements include its "Spaces" for separating work and personal browsing, and a built-in Split View for looking at multiple pages at once.

In other Firefox news, the browser is finally getting a profile management feature. These profiles are a bit different from Mozilla's existing multi-account containers.

While containers only isolate data like cookies and logins within a single profile, the new profiles feature will create a complete separation of all browsing data, including history, bookmarks, and extensions for each profile you make.

	By Susan Bradley

Social media is replete with complaints about how Microsoft shoves feature releases and updates, and reboots computers, at will.

It makes me shake my head. It’s as if everyone were thinking they had no control over the process at all. That’s not true. You have ample time to consider what the Redmond overlords want and to decide the specific action you will take.

So it’s time to pause, which is why I’m raising the MS-DEFCON level to 2.

While you’re paused, take stock: Which version of Windows 11 are you currently running? This question is important because I’ve only recently recommended that everyone move to 24H2. If you’re on 23H2, that means you.

Then, lock in 24H2. Windows 11 25H2 is just around the corner, and it’s too early to make recommendations about moving to it. How do you lock it in? There are several ways, including a very easy and safe method.

	Steve Gibson’s InControl

InControl is the fastest, easiest way to tell Windows that you want to stay on a specific feature release. Perhaps more important, it’s also very safe because it prevents Windows from moving to a new feature release without blocking monthly security updates or out-of-band updates relating to security. The zero-install program is small and self-contained, making it a quick download and easy to move to other PCs.

What could be simpler than this?

Figure 1. InControl is blunt: you are not in control.

Enter the Version and the Release of the version of Windows you want. Then click the Take Control button.

Figure 2. You’re in the green!

Once you have taken control, the Version/Release fields are grayed and you cannot change them. To change the version you want, you must first Release Control and start over.

Of course, traditional control methods remain. You can use Registry keys or Group Policy to keep a PC at a specific feature release. Businesses can use Intune in the same way. But there is one other thing to check. In Settings | Windows Update, you’ll find a slider to enable Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. This makes your PC a target for dribbled updates and lessens your control, so you should make sure it is disabled. Otherwise, you may find 25H2 downloaded and ready to install before you’re ready.

	Consumers

Don’t get frustrated if you haven’t been offered the Extended Security Updates (ESU) plan for Windows 10. There is no drop-dead date; enrollment is not required before October 14, the last official patching day for Windows 10 22H2. You can do it when ready, but remember that no matter when you enroll, the ESU expires on October 13, 2026.

Go back and review the recommendations in my On Security column this past Monday. If you still aren’t being offered the update, please start a new thread in the Windows 10 ESU questions forum.

Even if you haven’t been offered the ESU option, I still recommend that you pause or defer updating. Just because we’ve reached the last official release for Windows 10 22H2, that doesn’t mean we should change our normal stance from deferring, testing, and monitoring for issues. For both Windows 10 and Windows 11, place your machines in deferrals or pausing of updates, using your favorite tool or method of choice. The easiest way is merely to go into the Windows Update settings and use the Pause updates option. On Windows 11 24H2, you can pause up to five weeks. Others use WUMgr.

	Businesses

If you are in the process of rolling out Windows Server 2025 and making it your primary domain controller, leave one older legacy operating system behind. Some 23H2 workstations are losing their trust relationship with the domain controller. So far, I’ve seen only workarounds and no better solution — other than not to move all your domain controllers to Server 2025. I’ll keep an eye on this issue and report back.

If you are moving to 25H2 and you work with clients who have older technologies or rely on peer-to-peer networking, be aware that 25H2 makes some changes — especially if the operating system is freshly installed. 24H2 removed SMBv1, but 25H2 continues with that behavior. So be aware that you may have to reinstall or reinstate some insecure settings in order to get your older technology to work. In addition, you may need to disable SMB signing and enable guest logons.

Also be prepared for the removal of the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line utility (WMIC) from 25H2. In addition, PowerShell 2.0 is no longer included. If you rely on either of these two tools, it’s time to ensure you are using newer technologies.

Managed service providers, please make sure you are taking actions to control these feature releases. Neither you nor your clients should be the beta testers of Windows 11 25H2 until these issues are identified and fixed. Even though the 25H2 release is an easy entitlement package this time, make sure it’s installed when you want it, not when Microsoft dribbles it out to your clients.

Canonical has just released Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka for download. One of the main features in this update is the inclusion of memory-safe implementations of coreutils via uutils and sudo-rs. Canonical is adopting more modern implementations to increase the resilience of critical system software.

The introduction of memory-safe sudo reduces the attack surface, improving overall security. However, the traditional sudo tool remains available as an option for anyone who requires it. The memory safety of these tools is inherited from the fact that they’re written in Rust, a memory-safe language. By default, Rust won’t let you compile code that has code that could cause memory errors that could enable vulnerabilities.

Ubuntu 25.10 ships with the latest Linux kernel 6.17, which gives users early access to nested virtualization on ARM platforms such as NVIDIA Grace and AmpereOne. Nested virtualization enables developers to run hypervisors inside virtual machines, supporting advanced CI/CD and stronger workload isolation.

The kernel also lays the groundwork for native Intel TDX host support with an eye on the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, ideal for confidential AI and data clean room workloads. The release also adopts RVA23, a recently ratified baseline profile for RISC-V builds, accelerating ecosystem growth and ensuring compatibility.

The desktop environment in Ubuntu 25.10 has been upgraded to GNOME 49, which brings media and power controls to the lock screen. New default applications are also included; these are the modern image viewer Loupe and the new terminal emulator Ptyxis.

Accessibility has been improved in the App Center and Settings panels with better support for high contrast, keyboard navigation, and screen reading that aligns with the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Additionally, selecting “install restricted extras” now enables AAC Bluetooth codec support and hardware-accelerated screen recording in GNOME, improving performance.

This release is also notable for developers as it ships with significant toolchain updates, including OpenJDK 25, Python 3.14 RC3, Golang 1.25, and GCC 15. Rust 1.85 is also included as the default, with 1.88 also available. A preview of the new Zig language compiler is also included for amd64 and arm64.

Furthermore, a preview of .NET 10 is included, and the .NET developer experience has been enhanced with an improved Snapcraft plugin for monorepo setups and better MSBuild support. PowerShell tools are also now available on Ubuntu for arm64, ppc64el, and s390x platforms via a snap.

You can download Ubuntu 25.10 now from the downloads page, just scroll down a bit for the download link.

If you’ve ever used Linux, there’s a good chance you’ve used Linux Mint, a user-friendly distribution that’s based on Ubuntu. Well, the developers behind the project also have another version of Linux Mint, but it’s based on Debian, which is the base of Ubuntu. This version is referred to as LMDE or Linux Mint Debian Edition.

Last month, we got the beta release of LMDE 7, which is based on the latest Debian 13. Now, however, it looks like the Linux Mint team is working on the final version of LMDE 7 as the ISOs are going through final checks. Once released, you’ll be able to install LMDE 7 and it’ll continue to get updates until 30 June 2030 - with Windows 10 support ending soon, it’ll be a solid option for keeping older computers alive.

The ISO being tested is labeled as lmde-7-cinnamon-amd64-2025.10.07-16.33, it has a status of “Being tested” with “Rejected” or “Approved for Stable release” being the possible outcomes in the following hours or days.

According to It’s FOSS, LMDE 7 will ship with Linux 6.12 which means it has support for more up to date hardware. It also incorporates the latest changes to the Cinnamon desktop and functions quite similar to Linux Mint 22.2. There are also improvements from the new Debian 13 based too such as APT 3.0 with the new Solver3 dependency resolver and new /tmp behavior that store temporary files in RAM for better performance.

Once the ISO has been approved for release, it will filter out to the various download mirrors and then we should get an official announcement from Linux Mint’s Clem Lefebvre with the download links and instructions on how to upgrade for LMDE 6 to 7.

Buried in the announcements is one change that Microsoft is soon making to Word that might ruffle some feathers among those who are still pushing back against OneDrive and the cloud.

"Starting today, new documents in Word desktop on Windows (Insiders) now save directly to OneDrive, with autosave enabled," says Microsoft. This means that creating new documents in Word in the future will automatically save said documents to your OneDrive storage, with autosave enabled from the get-go.

The change is designed to make it easier for users to back up and access their documents across devices, but some might find Word attempting to automatically upload documents to the cloud by default to be a privacy concern. Many will likely not even notice that Word's behavior has changed, as the entire saving and backup process is automatic.

Of course, users will be able to turn off this behavior if they prefer saving files manually or locally, but going forward, Word will default to automatically saving all new documents to the cloud. Until now, Word's default behavior has been to create a new document that is in an unsaved state locally and prompt you to save the document to OneDrive to enable auto-save.

In addition to the automatic file saving to OneDrive in Word, Microsoft announced lots of other improvements that are coming to OneDrive, including new Copilot integration features that make accessing Copilot and learning about, managing, or editing files and photos easy and quick using AI.

Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 Canary Channel update, build 27965, which finally brings the redesigned Start menu from Dev/Beta Channels to Canary users. While the new Start menu is the main feature, Microsoft is also making important changes to .NET Framework 3.5. The latter is no longer a Windows Feature on Demand (optional component), which means users who rely on it should get it via a standalone installer. Also, the build introduces Edit, a new command-line text editor, fixes for the taskbar and system tray, and more.

	Here is the changelog:

Introducing the new Start menu for Windows 11

Easily launch all your apps with a scrollable Start menu

We’re making it easier for you to launch your apps with our updated, scrollable Start menu. With “All” now on the top-level, apps are easily accessible without having to navigate to a secondary page. In addition, we’re introducing two new views to browse and launch your installed apps in the “All” section: category and grid view.

The new default Category view automatically groups your apps by category for quick access to your most used categories and apps. So, if your most used apps are Outlook and Solitaire, you can expect those apps to bubble up to the top in their respective categories. Categories are formed when there are at least 3 apps in each respective category. Otherwise, they will remain in the “Other” category.

Grid view is ordered alphabetically, like List view, but allows for better scanning of all your installed apps with more horizontal real estate. With new view options to choose from in the “All” section, we’ll remember your last used view so you can reliably launch your apps with the view you prefer most.

Experience a larger Start menu with responsive sections

We’re making better use of your screen real estate by adapting the size of the Start menu based on your screen size. Have a larger-screen device? You can expect to see a larger Start menu, by default, so you can see more of your apps and files. On larger devices, users can expect to see 8 columns of pinned apps, 6 recommendations, and 4 columns of categories in the Start menu. On smaller devices, you’ll see 6 columns of pinned apps, 4 recommendations, and 3 columns of categories.

Sections within Start are also responsive, so you can see more or less of your Pinned and Recommended sections. Have only a few pins? The Pinned section will shrink down to a single row, and other sections will slide up. If you’d prefer not to see recommendations, then turn off the following toggles in Settings > Personalization > Start: “Show recently added apps,” “Show recommended files in Start…,” “Show websites from your browsing history,” and “Show recommendations for tips…” If there aren’t any recommendations available, the section will collapse so you can see more of your installed apps.

Seamless cross-device integration with Phone Link

Lastly, we’ve updated Start to continue allowing you to take advantage of powerful cross-device features. Now, you can easily expand and collapse mobile device content using the new mobile device button next to the Search box.

This cross-device integration is generally available for connected Android and iOS devices in most markets and will be coming later in 2025 to the European Economic Area.

Here are the changes and improvements:

	[.NET Framework 3.5]

Starting with Build 27965, .NET Framework 3.5 is no longer a Windows Feature on Demand optional component. We encourage customers relying on the legacy framework to move to modern versions of .NET. Customers running business-critical applications that still depend on .NET Framework 3.5 can access a .NET Framework 3.5 standalone installer located here: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2337635. More information about .NET Framework products’ lifecycle can be found here: Lifecycle FAQ – .NET Framework | Microsoft Learn

	[Command Line]

Edit, a command-line text editor, is now delivered with Windows! You can quickly edit a file while in the Terminal app by typing edit followed by the file name. Edit is open source on GitHub and for a full list of its features, check out its docs.

	Here are the fixes:

	[Taskbar and System Tray]

If you were having issues with the taskbar not autohiding correctly in the previous flight, that should be resolved now.

Fixed a recent issue that was causing some videos and games to be unexpectedly red.

Fixed an issue that could affect the layback of protected content in certain Blu-ray, DVD, and digital TV apps that used Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement.

Finally, here is the list of known issues:

	[File Explorer]

[NEW] We’re working on the fix for an issue in the latest Canary builds causing File Explorer to crash when transferring files to a network drive.

	[Settings]

[NEW] Settings may crash when accessing drive information under Settings > System > Storage. This also impacts accessing the drive information from the properties when you right-click a drive in File Explorer.

	[Lock and login screens]

[NEW] We’re investigating an issue in this build where the media controls may not display on the lock screen.

	[Power and Battery]

We’re investigating reports that sleep and shutdown aren’t working correctly for some Insiders after the latest Canary builds.

This time, version 1.30 is introducing improved app navigation and Winpilot, a guide that will help newcomers during the setup process.

The biggest change in Flyoobe 1.30 is the reworked navigation, which, according to the developer, now follows Microsoft's UI guidelines. It is now split into two major sections: "Install Operating System" and "Setup Operating System." The latter houses all the useful stuff, like setting up your default browser, personalizing the system, configuring updates, and more.

The second big update is Winpilot (do not confuse it with the old Winpilot app, which has long been dead now). You can launch it by clicking the corresponding button next to the Flyoobe logo so that it can offer guided help for inexperienced users. While it is not fully automated, the developer says such an option might arrive in future updates.

Finally, in Flyoobe 1.30, extensions are now organized by category, with the post-setup section having its own extension group. As usual, the update fixes a bunch of bugs and tweaks things here and there. Here is the rest of the changelog:

Fixed a network OOBE bug where more than one network could be marked as connected

Fixed an installer issue that could prevent some apps from installing correctly

Fixed two small DPI scaling issues.

Removed several test flags used for Nightly builds

(The next Nightly is coming soon)

Various small UI fixes and layout adjustments

Minor efficiency improvements and smoother navigation

While the app mostly targets users with unsupported PCs (you can use this handy app to determine what exactly makes your PC ineligible for Windows 11), it is also useful for supported devices, as it provides additional tweaks and debloat capabilities.

Windows 10 support will be over in less than one week, and with it, Windows 11 is expected to gain more users. However, the latter is known for being picky and not quite as omnivorous as its predecessor when it comes to supported hardware. Therefore, if you want to install Windows 11 without any hacks or bypasses, it is important to know whether your computer actually supports it. This is where WhyNotWin11 comes in handy.

While Microsoft has its tools for compatibility checks, such as Windows Health Check, WhyNotWin11 stands out by offering a comprehensive overview of each critical component and offering more detailed explanations of what you can do about it. For example, enable Trusted Platform Module (TPM) if it is disabled by default. It can also tell if it is possible to replace a certain component, which is extra helpful for less experienced users.

With the latest update, WhyNotWin11 received improved CPU and GPU detection and the ability to update the list of processors if the user is connected to the internet. Also, even though most users are not going to use the app many times, WhyNotWin11 now supports themes so that you can customize the app's look to your liking.

If you use Google Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge, you might take the profile management feature for granted by now. Chrome has had a profile manager for over a decade, but its open-source rival, Mozilla Firefox, is the latest browser to introduce a profile manager to the masses.

Mozilla announced that profile management will roll out to all Firefox users on October 14. The feature has been around since Firefox version 138.0, when it was introduced for a limited number of users.

You will be able to create multiple digital nooks for work, family, school, and personal stuff, each complete with its own logins, bookmarks, history, extensions, and themes. At the very least, you won't have to keep countless browser tabs alive for so long.

Firefox profile manager builds on existing multitasking features, such as Tab Groups, which allow you to group similar tabs. It can help organize digital work even more and help reduce data mixing and cognitive load, according to Mozilla.

"By keeping your different roles online neatly separate, you spend less mental energy juggling contexts and avoid awkward surprises (like your weekend plans popping up in a work presentation)," the browser maker said.

Mozilla stated that it designed the feature to be more accessible for users with disabilities, particularly in terms of visual design elements like avatars, colors, and naming, as well as how Firefox profiles store sensitive information, such as medical records.

Users can customize profiles by picking a different color, theme, and avatar. Mozilla claims that profile management in Firefox offers better privacy. It doesn't know the user's "age, gender, precise location, name of your profile, or other information," and will apply their 'Data Collection and Use' settings to every Firefox profile created on the device.

Note that Firefox profiles are different from multi-account containers. While profiles have a complete separation of data, multi-account containers only separate browsing data, such as cookies and logins, between different containers.

Profile management is supported on Windows, Linux, and macOS, but not on Android and iOS. Creating a new profile doesn't sign you into a Mozilla account or change sync settings. Each profile remains separate, and Firefox doesn't allow multiple profiles on the same device to sync data to the same account.

Linux Kernel 6.0 Lands With Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPU Support

Linux Kernel 6.0 is here, and it is a very exciting release. Although Linux 5.19 had primarily new hardware support, this release improves upon it with performance improvements and more.

Here, we will be looking at some of the major refinements, as well as highlighting some of the smaller ones too.

What's With The Version Number Change?

As you will undoubtedly notice, the version number in Linux 6.0 has skipped the 5.x series.

The reason for the major version change is that the version numbers in the 5.x line were getting too big. There's not a hard rule regarding version numbering changes, and it mostly happens only when Linus Torvalds becomes worried that the number is getting bigger.

As is hopefully clear to everybody, the major version number change is more about me running out of fingers and toes than it is about any big fundamental changes.

That being said, Linux 6.0 is not fundamentally different from the version number might suggest. Despite this, it does bring some cool new features, which we'll look at now.

	Linux Kernel 6.0: What's New?

As with previous releases, a complete list of changes is available in the changelog. However, I can't recommend looking through it, as there have been thousands of changes since Linux 5.19.

With that in mind, I have picked out some of the best, starting with significantly improved support for the LoongArch CPU architecture

	LoongArch Improvements

Linux 5.19 did include initial support for the Chinese LoongArch CPU architecture. However, it was impossible to boot a working system due to missing drivers.

LoongArch CPUs should now be booting Linux with this release. Not to forget, Loongson is preparing Linux for its laptops. So, you now have a driver code in the Linux Kernel 6.0.

Additionally, the architecture has also now received initial PCI support. This means that the list of supported hardware for devices running this hardware should drastically improve.

	New SoC Support

Over the past few years, it has been incredible to see the transition to ARM-based CPUs in desktop and laptop computers. Linux, which has been running on these CPUs for years, has always been at the forefront, with almost all new systems released with this architecture receiving support after only a few months.

Although we have seen a few SoC additions over the last few kernels, there has been nothing like the Linux Kernel 6.0 release offers.

First, we have support for the newly-released Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen3. This is the third generation of its high-end laptop SoC. It offers significantly improved performance, putting it more in line with Apple's M1 SoC than the rest of their lineup.

Other SoCs that are receiving support with Linux 6.0 include:

 NXP i.MX93 SoC

 Allwinner H616

 Marvell Prestera 98DX2530

 Nuvoton NPCM8XX

 Sunplus SP7021

 Google Chameleon v3

 Various other ARM-based Chromebooks

Complete Support For Intel Desktop GPUs

As you probably have heard by now, Intel has had a tough time penetrating the GPU market. This has primarily been put down to driver issues on Windows, although these issues have extended to Linux too.

Despite the constant stream of driver improvements over the last few kernels, Linux Kernel 6.0 is the first where you can assume Arc Alchemist GPUs are finally usable.

This is because the last low-level driver code has finally been added, allowing the PCI IDs to be added to the kernel. Theoretically, Intel's Arc GPUs should "just work" if you run Linux Kernel 6.0. You can test it out.

	Raptor Lake Support

Intel unveiled its Raptor Lake series only recently. While the performance gains seem exciting on paper, we still have to wait for reviews.

With Linux Kernel 6.0, Intel maintainers have added various updates and support for its cooling driver as well. Of course, its support may not hint at a seamless experience without testing.

	Other Changes

Alongside the major ones listed above, several smaller but still meaningful changes in the kernel with Linux 6.0. Some of these include:

Raspberry Pi 4 V3D support (3 years after the Pi 4's release)

Some more RDNA3 graphics driver code

 OpenRISC PCI support

 New extensions for RISC-V

You can explore more such feature changes in Phoronix's feature overview.

	Getting Linux Kernel 6.0

If you are currently Arch Linux, Fedora, or one of their derivatives, you should be able to upgrade shortly easily.

Unfortunately, if you are using other Linux distributions (Pop!_OS and Linux Lite can be an exception to some extent), you may not receive an upgrade directly from your distro.

However, almost all Linux distributions allow you to install the latest kernel explicitly. Here's a guide for Ubuntu 👇

So, if you are feeling adventurous (and know what you are doing), you can find the newer kernel listed on Linux Kernel Archives. You can download the tarball to test it out.

However, as always, we recommend waiting for your Linux distribution to push an update if you do not want to take any chances. It is best to stick to what’s being offered for your Linux distribution by default.

You can also access your profiles, or create a new one from about:profiles. But these methods are not particularly user-friendly. That's why the Profile Switcher menu has been designed, to simplify things.

So that's the version which will bring profile management to the stable channel by default, for a limited number of users.

But you don't need to wait until then, you can try it right now in the stable version of Firefox by changing a flag. The setting has been available since Firefox 138, which was released in April 2025. To enable the Profile Switcher in Firefox, open about: config and search for browser.profiles.enabled and set its value to true. You don't have to restart the browser. To access the feature, just click on the hamburger menu button, and you should see Profiles at the top of the menu.

However, if you are worried that things might get messed up, you can install Firefox Nightly to test the Profile Manager. It already has the Profile Switcher enabled by default, so you don't need to edit any flag in the Nightly version.

Note: If you wish to sync profiles, you should create a separate Mozilla account for each profile. Refer to the support page here for more details.

The many memory management "MM" changes were recently merged into the Linux 6.18 kernel, consisting of a number of interesting patch series.

Andrew Morton submitted the big set of MM changes for Linux 6.18. The highlights this cycle from the long list of patches include:

	- Improvements to the cluster scan strategy for the swapping code. This improves the large allocation performance. A Tencent engineer found that for a kernel build test with 96 jobs and 10G of zRAM with 64KkB mTHP enabled, the system time was nearly halved and also saw a lower swap failure rate.

	- Improvements to the Kexec Handover functionality introduced back in Linux 6.16.

	- Kernel file-mapped folios introduce the notion of "kernel file pages".

	- Extending PR_SET_THP_DISABLE to allow individual processes to opt-out of THP always behavior into "madvise" THP mode without affecting other running workloads on the system.

	- Tiny optimizations for large read operations to enhance the page cache read path.

	- Adding persistent huge zero folio support.

	- The Zpool indirection layer has been removed.

	- Enhancements around Rust allocator support. There is also now Rust abstractions for maple trees, driven by Nouveau and Nova driver needs.

	- The preliminary code intrdoucing swap tables as swap cache.

	- A number of improvements to the out-of-memory (OOM) killer.

This complements the other non-MM pull request to also already having been merged for Linux 6.18.

Microsoft has been trying really hard to get customers to switch the new Outlook experience, but it is facing stiff resistance from customers who think that the app is "hot garbage". Now, the company is preparing to make a change that does not only impact the new Outlook for Windows, but also the web implementation.

Basically, Microsoft is changing how inline images are represented in Outlook, which impacts developers who have built add-ins to process images in the service. Currently, an inline image's HTML contains an attachment ID. Developers can use this HTML code to extract the URL ID for comparison with the attachment ID, and utilize the URL to retrieve the Base64 value of the inline image.

However, moving forward, Microsoft is modifying this implementation to get rid of the attachment ID in favor of the content ID, which is a breaking change for certain Outlook add-ins which rely on parsing the former ID.

The rationale for this change is that Microsoft is transitioning to a fetch call to get inline images that includes the token in the request header, rather than using a GET request. Interestingly, this is a security improvement that is already utilized by classic Outlook for Windows, which means that the latest update only applies to the new Outlook for Windows and the web experience.

Microsoft has encouraged developers to update their content parsing logic to accommodate this change and to subsequently test their add-ins. The platform update will begin rolling out to production users starting from November 15, so it's crucial to modify your parsing logic before that date. The good news is that end users are not expected to be impacted by this change, unless they leverage add-ins which have not been updated by their respective developers to manage the HTML modifications to the attachment IDs.

ClamAV 1.5 has been released today as a major update for this open-source, free, and cross-platform antivirus engine for detecting trojans, viruses, malware, and other malicious threats.

Highlights of ClamAV 1.5 include checks to determine if an OLE2-based MS Office document is encrypted, regex support for the clamd.conf OnAccessExcludePath configuration option, as well as CVD signing and verification using external .sign files, along with new options to set an alternative CVD certs directory.

“Freshclam will now attempt to download external signature files to accompany existing .cvd databases and .cdiff patch files. Sigtool now has commands to sign and verify using the external signatures,” said the devs. “ClamAV now installs a ‘certs’ directory in the app config directory (e.g., <prefix>/etc/certs). The install path is configurable.”

ClamAV 1.5 also adds the ability to record URIs found in HTML and PDF files when the “generate-JSON-metadata” feature is enabled, along with new options (--json-store-html-uris=no and --json-store-pdf-uris=no) to disable this functionality in case you want the JSON metadata feature but don’t want to record HTML and PDF URIs.

Furthermore, this release adds an option to enable FIPS-like limits to disable the MD5 and SHA1 cryptographic hashes from being used for verifying digital signatures or for trusting a file when checking for false positives (FPs). Also, ClamAV will now attempt to detect if FIPS-mode is enabled.

“This change mitigates safety concerns over the use of MD5 and SHA1 algorithms to trust files and is required to enable ClamAV to operate legitimately in FIPS-mode enabled environments,” explained the devs. ClamAV may still calculate MD5 or SHA1 hashes as needed for detection purposes or for informational purposes in FIPS-enabled environments and when the FIPS-limits option is enabled.

On top of that, ClamAV 1.5 upgrades the clean-file scan cache to use the SHA2-256 algorithm, adds an option to disable select administrative commands, improves the precision of the bytes-scanned and bytes-read counters, adds hash and file-type in/out CLI options, and adds new scan functions.

Among other changes, ClamAV 1.5 improves support for extracting malformed ZIP archives, adds file type recognition for an initial set of AI model file types, adds support for inline comments in ClamAV configuration files, and adds support for creating .cdiff and .script patch files for CVDs that have underscores in the CVD name.

Under the hood, this release improves support for compiling on Solaris and GNU/Hurd systems, as well as support for linking with the NCurses library dependency when libtinfo is built as a separate library. Of course, numerous bugs were fixed, so check out the release notes for more details.

You can download ClamAV 1.5 right now from the official website as a source tarball or as DEB and RPM binaries for Debian/Ubuntu or Red Hat Enterprise Linux-based distributions from the project’s GitHub page. Of course, you can also install ClamAV from your distro’s stable repositories.

Microsoft has admitted that two widely used features in Windows 10 and Windows 11 are slowing down computers, with OneDrive file synchronisation and visual effects identified as the main causes.

The company has also shared advice for users and pledged improvements in future updates.

The disclosure follows Microsoft’s claim that Windows 11 version 25H2, its latest update, delivers far better performance than versions 24H2 and 22H2, particularly in speed and responsiveness. However, the company acknowledged that certain built-in features can counteract these improvements.

The first culprit is OneDrive sync. Microsoft described OneDrive as an essential tool that allows users to access files across devices and provides cloud backup in case of hardware failure. But the process of real-time syncing consumes significant system resources, especially when large folders such as Documents, Desktop or Pictures are uploaded or downloaded. This can cause noticeable slowdowns at peak times.

	Photo: Screenshot

To mitigate the issue, Microsoft recommends that users pause OneDrive synchronisation temporarily if their PC feels sluggish. The company stressed that doing so will not affect existing files, and syncing can be resumed at any time. Microsoft added that the new OneDrive app for Windows 11 may optimise resource usage in future updates, reducing the problem.

The second feature slowing systems is Windows 11’s visual effects, including animations and shadows, that enhance the look of the interface. Microsoft explained that these consume additional CPU, GPU and RAM resources. Devices with limited specifications, particularly those with less than 8GB of RAM, are most affected, resulting in lag or delays when multiple applications are opened simultaneously.

	Photo: Screenshot

Turning off the effects can be done through the Performance Options menu. Users can search “performance” in Windows, select “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”, and then choose “Adjust for best performance” before applying the changes.

Disabling the effects simplifies the interface but makes systems more responsive, especially on entry-level laptops and PCs.

Microsoft confirmed that OneDrive sync and visual effects are the two main factors slowing down Windows systems. Small adjustments, such as pausing sync or disabling animations, can noticeably boost performance in both Windows 11 and Windows 10, without the need to install additional software.

The fix is present in the latest Windows 11 Dev and Beta Channel builds, which means it should roll out to all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks.

The option to update and shut down comes in handy whenever you have a pending Windows update and are done with your PC for the day. If you're ready to shut down, but have an update pending, it's annoying having to wait for that update to install and restart before you can shut down the PC and leave.

Ideally, that update and shut down option would mean you didn't need to wait around, but given it was unreliable in actually shutting down the PC, many people found that they'd have to wait around to manually shut down the PC anyway. Hopefully, that'll no longer be the case with this new fix!

In the ever-going tug of war between users and Microsoft, the latter often comes up with new methods that make it harder to use Windows 11 without certain constraints that Microsoft tries to impose so hard. Skipping the Microsoft Account and the active internet connection during the initial setup is a popular thing among users, especially those who want to use the operating system with a local profile and have a bit more control over what is going on.

	Microsoft hates that!

The company has already blocked the popular oobe\bypassnro command that people used to skip parts of the initial setup, and now, Microsoft is doubling down on its efforts. In the latest Windows 11 preview builds, the software giant makes it much harder to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account.

Previously, Microsoft was perfectly fine with people using local accounts, and Windows 10's initial setup even has a dedicated button for local profiles. With Windows 11, Microsoft claims that using a local profile leaves your PC "not fully configured for use." Here is what it says:

Local-only commands removal: We are removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience (OOBE). While these mechanisms were often used to bypass Microsoft account setup, they also inadvertently skip critical setup screens, potentially causing users to exit OOBE with a device that is not fully configured for use. Users will need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft account, to ensure device is setup correctly.

While I personally use my PC with a Microsoft Account signed in, I always set up new installs in offline mode and with a local account. First, you skip a ton of ads. These days, Windows 11 has multiple full-screen ads for Game Pass, Microsoft 365, Phone Link, and more. Skipping these is not going to break your PC or affect its functionality in any reasonable way. Second, it lets you skip mandatory OneDrive backup and forced BitLocker encryption, something that users can decide on their own whether they want it or not. Third, and most importantly for me, setting up Windows 11 in offline mode lets me install the drivers I need and want without any intervention from Windows Update.

It is really disappointing to see Microsoft disrespecting user choice like this and claiming that not using a Microsoft Account will somehow make your computer misconfigured. Luckily, the Windows community is very active and full of enthusiasts who always find a way to bypass another restriction from Microsoft, so look out for new guides on how to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account in offline mode.

Windows 10 is reaching the end of support in about a week, with the operating system set to receive its final Patch Tuesday update on October 14, 2025. Both consumers and enterprise customers have the option to extend the life of their OS through the extended security updates (ESU) program, which offers one and three years of security updates, respectively. However, come October 14, certain customers could find themselves in a bit of a predicament.

The thing about Patch Tuesday updates is that they often introduce bugs across Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2022, and Windows Server 2025. Since we are concerned with Windows 10's end of life (EOL) right now, let's stick with that only for now.

Since August 2025, Microsoft has tracked three bugs for Windows 10, version 22H2. These were related to unexpected User Account Control (UAC) prompts while performing certain operations, issues with NDI streaming performance, and the failure of reset and recovery operations in some configurations. Microsoft managed to fix all of these on or before September's Patch Tuesday updates, which is great.

But the problem with the upcoming Patch Tuesday update is that if it does introduce bugs, Microsoft will not be mandated to fix them since support for Windows 10 will have officially ended on October 14. If you think that enrolling in ESU will get you bugfixes, you're mistaken, as this program only covers security updates, not fixes or enhancements. Microsoft cautions that:

The ESU programme helps reduce the risk of malware and cybersecurity attacks by providing access to critical and important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Centre (MSRC) for devices running Windows 10, version 22H2. ESU enrollment does not provide other types of fixes, feature improvements or product enhancements. It also does not come with technical support.

What this means is that if you do run into any errors after installing updates on October 14, you're pretty much on your own. In a nutshell, you'll have three options: upgrading to another OS like Windows 11, waiting for third-party fixes, or living with OS bugs. None of them are great options if you really do like Windows 10 and intend to stick with it for as long as possible.

The fact that Microsoft won't provide bug fixes beyond October 14, even if a problem does arise, isn't entirely surprising. Lots of software and OS vendors follow the same practice, but it's particularly tricky in the case of Windows 10 since the OS has hundreds of millions of users even right now, and even the slightest change to it could break something on certain configurations.

Since the hardware running Windows 10 is so diverse, there's certainly a non-zero percent chance that something will break on Patch Tuesday. I'm no conspiracy theorist, so I won't go as far as to suggest that Microsoft will use this opportunity to force Windows 10 customers to upgrade to Windows 11, but just keep this in mind as you apply Patch Tuesday updates next week. Of course, there is the off-chance that a significant bug that is widespread enough may receive an out-of-band update from Microsoft, but don't bank too much on that happening.
