	Mozilla plans to release Firefox 110.0.1 Stable later today. The new stable version of the Firefox web browser fixes security issues in the browser as well as crashes and other non-security issues.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Firefox users may select Menu &gt; Help &gt; About Firefox to display the version that is installed on their device. The browser checks for updates when the about page is opened, and it will download any update that it finds to the local system to install note.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Please note that the update may not be available yet, if you are reading this on February 28,2023.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new Firefox release is a security update first and foremost. Mozilla does not reveal information about security updates before the actual release. We will update the article once the information is published by Mozilla.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Firefox 110.0.1 fixes five non-security issues, including one crash. Three of the fixed issues affect specific operating systems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Here is the overview:</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Firefox's function to clear recent cookies caused all cookies to be cleared. The option is found under Menu &gt; History &gt; Clear Recent History. There, Firefox users may select to clear data from the last hour, two or four hours, or day. Data includes cookies, but may also include the browsing and download history, active logins, and other data.
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixed a CSP serialization bug that caused issues with Denmark's MitID Digital ID.
	</li>
	<li>
		On Windows, activation of the manage bookmarks link did not always result in the opening of the bookmarks manager; the button did not respond to clicks if the bookmarks toolbar was empty.
	</li>
	<li>
		On Linux, Mozilla fixed a WebGL crash when the system was run inside a VMWare virtual machine.
	</li>
	<li>
		On Mac OS,  Mozilla addressed a bug that caused context menus to sometimes display in the background instead of the foreground. Other Firefox user interface elements were sometimes displayed in the foreground instead.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The official release notes will be published <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/110.0.1/releasenotes/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>.
</p>

	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>Why should you try Linux? This is why. </strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Back when I first started using Linux in 1997, the open-source operating system was primarily used by computer science students, hackers, and programmers who wanted an alternative to the Windows operating system. It was serious and geared toward serious work. Fast forward to now and Linux is used for everything. Why? Simply put, it's more flexible than Windows.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux can be bent and twisted into just about anything. But Linux is not only more flexible, reliable, and secure than the competition, but it's also a lot more fun. I've spent many a day (and weekend) tweaking the Linux desktop simply because I could.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some of the desktops I've configured have been so amazing that friends wanted to know how they could achieve the same look, only to be disappointed that their operating system of choice wasn't capable of pulling off such a feat.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To that end, I wanted to share some of the really cool things that you can do with the Linux desktop that you can't do with other operating systems. My goal is to not only convince you that Linux is a really incredible operating system but hopefully to convince you to give it a try.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And thus, without further ado, let's get to those cool things.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<img alt="afterstep.jpg?auto=webp&amp;width=1280" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="538" width="720" src="https://www.zdnet.com/a/img/resize/a5716c881387182c8527b4e88773b88bf7dc9e1d/2022/08/22/ff9249f6-7357-48c0-b5f6-42e2c9f5b86a/afterstep.jpg?auto=webp&amp;width=1280" />
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<span style="font-size:12px;"><em>AfterStep on Ubuntu<br />
	ZDNET/Jack Wallen</em></span>
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>1. Change it</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux is about choice. Some might say, "But there's too much choice!" The thing is, many desktop distributions make the hard choices for you -- which kernel, which bash shell, which startup service, which network manager. Some distributions intentionally limit those choices to keep users from being inundated with options. But even those distributions can be changed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For example, if you opt to go with Ubuntu Linux and you don't like GNOME, you can install KDE Plasma, Xfce, Pantheon, Budgie, Enlightenment, or any number of Linux desktop environments. And that's part of the beauty of Linux…if you don't like it, change it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a matter of minutes, you can change your desktop environment to one that resembles Windows, MacOS, or something completely different.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>2. Revive old hardware</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Remember when Windows 11 was released, and a lot of people soon discovered that the computer they bought three years prior wouldn't support the latest version of the operating system? That's not the case with Linux. In fact, there are versions of Linux (such as Lubuntu and Linux Lite) that are specifically created to run on older hardware (although they can also run on newer machines as well).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You might have a machine lying around in a closet that's five years old, and you assumed it was headed for the recycler. Grab a lightweight version of Linux, install it on that aging machine, and watch it run like an absolute champ.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>3. Never worry about lock-in</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the problems I have with operating systems like Windows and MacOS is vendor lock-in. With MacOS, you do things the Apple way. With Windows 11, you do things the Windows way. With Linux, you do things your way.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In other words, if there's something about the way the desktop functions that you don't like, you can tweak it to fit your needs and workflow perfectly. And nearly every Linux distribution allows for such customization. I don't know about you, but I would much rather work in a way that perfectly suits my needs rather than in a way that aligns with a third party's idea of what is efficient. Most often, I find their idea of efficiency is nowhere near mine.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>4. Upgrade without reboots</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	How many times have you gone to upgrade either Windows or MacOS, only to find out the upgrade actually happens during a reboot? For me, I could use that time actually being productive. That's yet another reason why I find Linux is superior to the competition.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With Linux, I can do a full upgrade, all the while continuing to work on the desktop. In fact, with most Linux distributions, the only time you have to reboot after an upgrade is if the kernel is upgraded. Otherwise, you just keep on using the OS while the upgrade runs in the background.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>5. Run Windows software</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That's right, for those who must run Windows software on Linux, there's a way, and it's called WINE. Wine is an installable piece of software that allows you to install Windows software and run it on Linux. Wine is not generally installed by default, but it's found in most distributions' default repositories so that it can be installed from within the various app stores available on Linux.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of which…
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>6. Install tons of software… for free!</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You might have heard many people say there's no software available for Linux. They're wrong. With Linux, you'll find thousands upon thousands of free software that can be installed from the GUI app store. And thanks to the likes of Snap and Flatpak, you can even install proprietary apps, such as Zoom and Spotify, on Linux with ease.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I realize that MacOS and Windows both have a large selection of software to install from, but you won't find nearly the selection of free software (and without ads) available for installation. Also, managing installed software is so much easier with Linux (either from the command line or the GUI). Even better, you can add third-party repositories to your package manager to install even more software. In other words, Linux offers considerably more flexibility with regard to software installation.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>7. Wow your friends</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As I mentioned earlier, with Linux, you can create a desktop environment that is sure to wow your friends. Back in my early days, I used to spend hours tweaking the AfterStep and Enlightenment window managers to the point where they looked as if they were from the future. I used transparency and window effects that were unheard of on Windows, and everyone who saw my desktops wanted them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although few Linux desktops are as flexible as those, there are still desktops (such as Xfce, Enlightenment, and KDE Plasma) that can be configured to look like technological works of art. Not only is this a great way to make everyone around you jealous…it's a lot of fun.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:28px;"><strong>8. Enjoy unheard of reliability</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the years that I've been using Linux, I've rarely experienced any serious issues. Although I did one time wind up having a server hacked and a rootkit installed, that was an anomaly for me. Outside of that, the vast majority of the issues I've encountered were fixable within minutes. And because Linux gives you all the troubleshooting tools you need to solve those problems, resolving an issue is generally a log file read away.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux just works. It really is that simple. But more importantly, it works and works and works. So, if you're looking for a way to put the fun, flexibility, ease of use, and reliability back into computing, do yourself a favor and give Linux a try.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Some investors felt Adobe’s purchase of Figma was overvalued, creative types that used the web-first design collaboration startup's wares were nervous about its takeover, and it seems the US Department of Justice is too.</span>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">According to loquacious sources that spoke to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-23/doj-preparing-suit-to-block-adobe-s-20-billion-deal-for-figma" rel="external nofollow">Bloomberg</a> on the condition of anonymity, the federal executive department of the US government is planning to block the proposed $20 billion sale – which would be the biggest ever buy of a private software biz.</span>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The Creative Cloud maker met with the Justice Department this week, as is "common practice" before a suit is filed. <p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The cash and stock acquisition was announced by Adobe in September, and a short <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2022/11/18/adobe_figma_antitrust/" rel="external nofollow">few months later the DoJ made a second request for information</a> after contacting customers, competitors and Figma's private equity backers, who were presumably delighted at the $20 billion payday.</span>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Now the DoJ may demand concessions and Adobe may acquiesce to get the deal over the line rather than see it blocked. The software-maker's bid for Figma is also being <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2023/02/15/adobes_20bn_buy_of_figma/" rel="external nofollow">scrutinized by the European Union antitrust team</a> to "examine the potential cross-border effects of the transaction." The deeper probe began mid-February.</span>
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Not to be left out, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, which <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2022/10/18/meta_facebook_giphy_cma_/" rel="external nofollow">blocked Meta's buy of Giphy last year</a>, is also more <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2022/12/16/adobe_fy_2022/" rel="external nofollow">closely inspecting the agreement</a>.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Adobe told us it expects the sale to stand up. A spokesperson said:</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">"The combination of Adobe and Figma will deliver significant value to consumers, advance new product categories and technologies and create new market opportunities, and we've been delighted to hear from customers across the design space who tell us they are excited about the benefits the transaction will unlock.</span>
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">"Adobe and Figma focus on very different product areas today. Figma is a leader in interactive product design, focused on building a collaborative web platform. Adobe is a leader in the creative tools space, helping millions of users create amazing visual content. Together, our vision will help enable millions of consumers to transform their productivity with creativity."</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">It added: "We are engaged in constructive and cooperative discussions with regulators in the US, UK and EU among others. We continue to expect to close the transaction in 2023, in line with previously stated guidance."</span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">We have asked the DoJ to comment.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The $20 billion purchase price for Figma equated to 50 times its forecast $400 million annualized recurring revenues in 2022. Even seen through the lens of a pandemic-led bonanza for tech business, this was an eye-wateringly expensive agreement. Some on Wall Street felt this was too high a price to pay for a relative upstart.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Figma is a collaboration design biz that built a browser-based app to manage file organization by showing projects and their files in a dedicated format. It's a vector-based graphic editor and prototyping tool with no installation, patching or updates required. It has four million users, yet only a small fraction are paying customers.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Users <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/FigmaDesign/comments/xgwws2/just_a_reminder_of_what_the_founder_of_figma_once/" rel="external nofollow">feared</a> Adobe would merge Figma with its XD software and hike prices. Figma co-founder Dylan Field said this wouldn't happen. Users made their upset obvious on the <a href="https://forum.figma.com/t/adobe-near-deal-to-buy-online-design-startup-figma-please-no/29662/117" rel="external nofollow">community forum</a> in the month after the sale was announced. ®</span>

	It appears that Microsoft is preparing to give users more taskbar customization features. Newly found strings in <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-dev-build-25300-has-new-snap-layouts-fixes-winre-issue-and-much-more/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 build 25300 (the latest </a><a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-dev-build-25300-has-new-snap-layouts-fixes-winre-issue-and-much-more/" rel="external nofollow">Dev</a> release) point to the option responsible for toggling on and off the taskbar clock and date:

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>Hide taskbar clock<br>
	Hide time and date in the System tray<br>
	Turn this on to hide your time and date information in the corner of your taskbar</em>
</p>

<p>
	Here is what the taskbar could look like with no tray clock:

<p>
	It is worth noting that the existence of those strings does not mean Microsoft will implement the ability to disable the taskbar clock. Still, it is undoubtedly interesting to see Microsoft considering adding such an option while ignoring customers wanting to separate the Wi-Fi, volume, and battery indicators or refusing to allow Windows 11 users to place the taskbar on top of the screen (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-says-changing-taskbar-location-in-windows-11-is-not-important/" rel="external nofollow">it is not important, according to Microsoft</a>).

<p>
	Date and time on the taskbar are not the only part Windows 11 might soon let you enable or disable. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/here-are-the-new-features-in-windows-11-moment-2-update/" rel="external nofollow">The upcoming Moment 2 update</a> (due to release next month) will bring a redesigned notification area with the option to toggle off the overflow menu for a more streamlined and minimal look.

	Like most mainstream browsers, Edge has its extensions store, where customers can download various add-ons to expand the browser's feature set. <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/extensions-badging-on-the-edge-add-ons-store/m-p/3751779" rel="external nofollow">According to Microsoft</a>, Edge Add-ons Store is approaching 11,000 extensions, which means Microsoft needs to figure out how to improve discoverability as the marketplace grows. Extension badging is one way to do that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a recently published community post, the software giant announced an upcoming experiment aiming to flag high-quality extensions with badges. Markers should also encourage developers to build their projects with the best practices in mind and deliver great user experiences for the end customers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft is not ready for a global badge rollout, and the company wants to conduct a small-scale experiment first. It also plans to engage with the developer community to sort out criteria that entitle a particular extension for a badge and help developers get acquainted with the badging process.
</p>

<p>

The extension marketplace now provides a checkmark (no need to pay $8/mo for this one) for verified developers and a "featured" tag for add-ons that follow recommended practices for Chrome extensions.

	Google seems to be working on a new feature for Chrome users to let them close tabs easily, particularly when too many tabs are opened. As the name suggests, double-clicking on the tabs will close them when the feature is enabled, just like the Microsoft Edge browser. Google is currently working on it, according to a new patch in Gerrit.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When you open too many tabs on your browser, you no longer see the X button on every tab, making it difficult to close them quickly. This is where the ‘double-click to close’ feature comes into play. A double-click is what it takes to get rid of the unnecessary or inactive tabs from your web browser, thus making you less dependent on the X button. If the functionality finally makes its way to Chrome, users will no longer have the X button as the only way to close tabs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In Microsoft Edge, there is a toggle for enabling or disabling the ‘double-click to close tabs’ feature. And in Google Chrome, we might also see a similar toggle on the browser settings page. But initially, Google will likely to make the new way of closing tabs available via a flag. If the company ends up completing the development, Chrome Canary users will likely be the first to test it. Chrome Stable users will get it later on.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you are using Microsoft Edge, you can enable or disbale the ‘double-click to close tabs’ feature from the settings page. You can follow the below steps enable/disable the toggle:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Click on the three-dot view button, located on right corner of Edge.
	</li>
	<li>
		Click <strong>Settings</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Click <strong>Appearance</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Scroll to the bottom until you see ‘<strong>Customise browser</strong>.’
	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Enable</strong>/<strong>Disable</strong> the ‘<strong>Use double-click to close browser tabs</strong>‘ toggle.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is worth pointing out that you do not need to restart the browser for the changes to take effect.

	<span style="font-size:14px;">Some important milestones have been hit, but we're a long way from USB sticks.</span>
</h2>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">It's an odd thing to see the leaders of an impressive open source project ask the press and their followers to please calm down and stop celebrating their accomplishments.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">But that's the situation the Asahi Linux team finds itself in after many <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/linux-6-2-the-first-mainstream-linux-kernel-for-apple-m1-chips-arrives/" rel="external nofollow">reports</a> last week that the <a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2023/2/19/309" rel="external nofollow">recently issued Linux 6.2 kernel</a> made Linux "ready to run" on Apple's <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/07/2022-macbook-air-review-apples-clean-slate/" rel="external nofollow">M-series hardware</a>. It is true that upstream support for Apple's M1 chips is present in 6.2 and that the 6.2 kernel will gradually make its way into many popular distributions, including Ubuntu and Fedora. Work on Apple's integrated GPU by the four-person Asahi core team has <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/four-person-dev-team-gets-apples-m-series-gpu-working-in-linux/" rel="external nofollow">come remarkably far</a>. And founder Linus Torvalds himself is particularly eager to see Linux running on his favorite portable hardware, going so far as to issue a kernel in August 2022 <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/linus-torvalds-uses-an-arm-powered-m2-macbook-air-to-release-latest-linux-kernel/" rel="external nofollow">from an M2 MacBook Air</a>.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">But the builders of the one Linux system that runs pretty well on Apple silicon are asking everybody to please just give it a moment.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">"You will not be able to run Ubuntu nor any other standard distro with 6.2 on any M1 Mac. Please don't get your hopes up," the Asahi Linux team <a href="https://twitter.com/AsahiLinux/status/1629867285379960833?s=20" rel="external nofollow">tweeted on Sunday morning</a>. In a threaded reply, they added, "We are continuously upstreaming kernel features, and 6.2 notably adds device trees and basic boot support for M1 Pro/Max/Ultra machines. However, there is still a long road before upstream kernels are usable on laptops. There is no trackpad/keyboard support upstream yet."</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">That's far from the only issue. Asahi Linux's own <a href="https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Feature-Support" rel="external nofollow">feature support document</a> details the long list of things working in both its own Asahi release and upstream Linux in general. Across all Apple silicon, USB 2/3 function, a video decoder, and various CPU states are either a work in progress, available for edge-level testing, or yet to be announced. On specific Apple devices, items like microphones, webcams, speakers, HDMI out, and other necessities are hit or miss.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Asahi's docs show a wide range of impressive achievements, given how the team is generally reverse-engineering everything from either Apple's new system-on-a-chip or its legacy ARM components. And yet, as the Asahi team points out, it's not ready for every M-series Apple device, nor standard distributions.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The main roadblock to other distributions allowing the newest Mac owners to be heavily disappointed in how their systems run is the <a href="https://www.wwdcnotes.com/notes/wwdc20/10214/" rel="external nofollow">16kB page size</a> that must be built into a kernel for it to run. "No generic ARM64 distro ships 16K kernels today, to our knowledge," the Asahi team <a href="https://twitter.com/AsahiLinux/status/1629867289809129472" rel="external nofollow">tweeted</a>. Distributions would need to repackage Asahi's userspace tooling, the team suggests, and either offer 16K-page-size kernels or wait until more standard 4K-size kernel builds are "<a href="https://twitter.com/AsahiLinux/status/1629867285379960833?s=20" rel="external nofollow">somewhat usable</a>."</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Asahi notes that it is "already working with some" distributions and expects to announce Asahi-based support "for a mainstream distro in the near future." Back in March 2022, when Asahi was ready for install but <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/03/asahi-linux-is-already-running-on-the-mac-studios-new-m1-ultra-chip/" rel="external nofollow">still quite new</a>, the team noted that for those seeking a USB-stick-and-go "Just Works" distribution (insert informed chuckle about Linux here), Asahi Linux would not be "'done' for another year, maybe two." Nearly a year from that point, it's looking more like two.</span>

	A few weeks after version 110 of the Microsoft Edge web browser was released in the Stable Channel, a new update to the browser was issued on Saturday (via WinFuture). The new 110.0.1587.56 version was launched because of some "Critical" security issues that have been discovered that could be a problem if they are exploited.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In this case, Microsoft pushed out the update not because of issues in the Edge browser itself but because some security bugs have been found in the Chromium project that Edge uses as its foundation. Microsoft's security page lists eight issues that have been fixed in the Edge update. One of them, CVE-2023-0941, is labeled as "Critical" by the CVE program, stating, "Use after free in Prompts in Google Chrome prior to 110.0.5481.177 allowed a remote attacker to potentially exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page." The other issues that are listed on the site are ranked as either "High" or "Medium" security issues.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Your Edge browser should auto-update itself to get the new version with the security bug fixes. If you don't want to wait for the auto-update, you can also download the new Edge version for all of Microsoft's supported platforms from the company's web site.

</p>

<p>
	A friend of mine with decades of experience in tech made a wittily apt remark that I’ve been thinking about lately.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When discussing how to overcome a thorny technical hurdle that most desktop OSes would obstruct the user from addressing, he quipped that Linux was easily up to the task because “Linux is a real operating system.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Instantly, I knew exactly what he meant. But I found that articulating it was altogether more challenging. After grappling with it, I thought I would give it a go.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>The Kevin Garnett of Operating Systems – Anything Is Possible!</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux is the most widely deployed desktop OS that readily grants users a full run of the system. True to its Unix heritage, everything is a file, and none are fenced off or hidden away. You can access UEFI firmware registers as files without difficulty. For instance, if you installed a Linux system on a device that shipped with Windows, you can dump the Windows license key with no problem.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux also lets you read and write to files representing input/output hardware devices. For example, the brightness of your laptop screen appears as a file with a single integer value, and you can instantly change the backlight’s intensity by altering the file’s value.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Because everything is a file, you can feed one file’s output into another’s input, chaining together practically any two functionalities. Want to play audio over a video call? Simply take a file representing audio playback and reroute its output to the file representing microphone input.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We’ve only just scratched the surface, but hopefully, this gives a good sense of how versatile a Linux system is.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>This Penguin: Quickly Reproducing and With No Natural Predators</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux is by no means the only Unix-y OS out there, but it has the distinction of being the one that unexpectedly took over the world.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I don’t find it all that shocking that a Unix-like system became so prolific. Unix has withstood the test of time because of its elegance and flexibility and formed the backbone of our digital architecture along the way. But by a strange confluence of historical, technical, and legal reasons, Linux — and not a more central branch of the Unix family tree — took root and thrived like an invasive species.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The result is that Linux became arguably the most-deployed OS today. Every Android device is Linux. Reliable statistics are hard to come by, but estimates show that anywhere from one in eight to four in five server installations is Linux. On top of that, 100% of the top 500 supercomputers run Linux.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Cloud deployment statistics are even harder to come by, but Linux’s market share must be immense given that AWS’s vanilla OS for its cloud compute service, EC2, is “Amazon Linux.” Linux has also seen massive uptake for installation in cars and has even broken into the gaming space with Valve’s Steam Deck.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>Many Relatives, One Family Tree</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Underneath its many guises, Linux is Linux: if you (deeply) know one, you know all.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is easy to mistake a thing’s outward form for the thing itself. Beginner Linux desktop users commonly start out perceiving the desktop environment, the clicky desktop UI, as “Linux.” I definitely went through this phase. Then when users start delving into the Unix-like structure underneath the desktop via the Bash shell (the most common default shell for Linux desktops), that often becomes what Linux is to users. I’ve been there, too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But Linux truly is the structure and contents of the filesystem, the myriad kernel modules available to it, and how everything works together. Granted, the structure can vary a fair amount from distribution to distribution. For example, is the init system systemd? Sys V? Something else?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Where are the executable binaries stored? Are they under /usr/local? Are they directly in /bin? Both (and do they use symbolic links)?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Once you grasp these variations, you become at home in any Linux system. Does it have zsh when you like Bash? Annoying, but manageable (just kidding, my zsh friends). A shell is a shell is a shell. You’ll probably have to break out the man pages for systemd, but you’ll survive (no systemd fans to apologize to, so I’m good there). Snap will clutter up your block devices with virtual entries when you run lsblk, but that’s what grep -v is for.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Having to read manuals doesn’t make a system foreign to you. If you know Linux, you know what you need to look up to get the job done in a Linux system. Worst case, you have to load a kernel module. But because Linux is, from an architectural standpoint, the kernel, this is always open to you if you have root access.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>Adaptability in Its DNA</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By now, it should be evident that Linux isn’t any one thing, yet it also is. Its ability to mold itself to its hardware and use case context while maintaining a consistent internal structure is what Linux is.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Adaptability is part of its DNA. In essence, not all Linux systems are created equal, but they’re all equally Linux.
</p>

	Microsoft is getting ready to start rolling out the third feature update for Windows 11. The "Moment 2" update is now available in the Release Preview (albeit the good stuff is disabled and waits for its enablement package), so it is time to review the changes.
</p>

<p>

Still, the latest release offers plenty of noteworthy improvements, so here is your comprehensive look at what is new.

<h3>
	Wait, what is "Moment?"
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft initially planned to release one yearly Windows 11 feature update to keep everything straightforward. Unfortunately, the company scrapped those plans to opt for cumulative-like releases every few months. That means Windows 11 gets new capabilities faster (three or four months) but with slimmer changelogs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unofficial reports claimed Microsoft calls these feature drop "moments." Even though the company no longer ships updates with silly monikers (remember <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/redstone-3-will-be-called-the-windows-10-fall-creators-update/" rel="external nofollow">Fall Creators Update</a>?), understanding how Windows 11 feature updates work remains challenging. If only Microsoft could come up with something genius like Windows 11.1, 11.2...
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft released the Moment 1 update in October 2022, and now the Moment 2 release is ready for its prime time.
</p>

<h3>
	What is new in Windows 11 "Moment 2" Update?
</h3>

<p>
	<strong>Search improvements across the OS.</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Most changes in the update are search-related, so Microsoft could have named it "Windows 11 Search Update." Fortunately, the era of ridiculous Windows update names is long gone.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Search on the taskbar</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 11 users now have a "real" search box on the taskbar, like in Windows 10. You can click the search box or press <strong>Win + S</strong> to start typing inside the search field.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142246_windows_search.gif" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="13.06" height="35" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142246_windows_search.gif">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, some users might prefer the old fake-looking search button, so Microsoft now provides four options: a proper box, a sort of box, an icon, and no search on the taskbar. You can personalize your experience in <strong>Settings &gt; Personalization &gt; Search</strong>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142212_search_settings.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="400" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142212_search_settings.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Search in the Start menu</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Start menu has a slightly redesigned search box with rounded corners. However, it still works somewhat confusing and jumps to a different UI when you click it. At least we now have rounded corners™, so there is that. A slightly more consistent and good-looking UI is also a welcome change.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142218_start_menu.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="400" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142218_start_menu.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Search in File Explorer</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although File Explorer in the Windows 11 Moment 2 update remains mostly unchanged (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/first-look-at-the-upcoming-file-explorer-redesign-in-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft is getting ready for a massive overhaul</a>), there is a slightly tweaked search behavior. Windows 11 no longer requires pressing Enter when you search, which means you get search results as you type. It is a minor change, but customers will appreciate the convenience.
</p>

<h3>
	<a id="TaskbarImprovements" name="TaskbarImprovements" rel=""></a>Taskbar Improvements
</h3>

<p>
	No Windows update arrives without improvements for the taskbar—one of the most controversial areas in Windows 11. The Moment 2 update brings several notable changes: a brand-new tablet-optimized taskbar and a redesigned notification area.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Tablet-optimized taskbar</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Disconnecting a keyboard from your Windows tablet or transforming a 2-in-1 into the tablet posture now results in Windows 11 collapsing the taskbar into a compact variant. It hides everything from the taskbar and notification area, leaving only the clock and status indicators. You can bring the traditional taskbar with enlarged icons (better for touch interactions) by swiping up. The same gesture invokes the quick settings menu when you swipe in the bottom-right corner.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142224_tablet_taskbar.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="400" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142224_tablet_taskbar.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 11's tablet-optimized taskbar works only on devices with touchscreens. However, you can use one software trick to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/windows-11-has-a-hidden-compact-taskbar-here-is-how-to-enable-it/" rel="external nofollow">enable it on a regular Windows PC for a minimal taskbar experience</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Redesigned notification (tray) area</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has finally redesigned the notification area with modern focus indicators (boxes that appear when you hover the cursor over an icon) and tooltips. The overflow menu supports dragging icons in and out with a pleasant animation, and those wanting to keep the area clean can disable the overflow altogether.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142206_redesigned_notification_area." class="ipsImage" data-ratio="40.83" height="110" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142206_redesigned_notification_area.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Windows Studio Effects in Quick Settings</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Customers with ARM-powered PCs and built-in NPUs can access a new section in the Quick Settings menu. Windows 11 allows toggling on or off various Windows Studio Effects, such as noise suppression, background blur, eye contact, and more. Unfortunately, this feature is unavailable on most Intel and AMD-powered computers.
</p>

<h3>
	<a id="WidgetsImprovements" name="WidgetsImprovements" rel=""></a>Widgets Improvements
</h3>

<p>
	The Windows 11 Moment 2 update makes Windows Widgets notably better and more exciting. Users are now allowed to use Widgets without a Microsoft Account, there is a full-screen mode, and third-party widgets are finally arriving in the Microsoft Store. It is worth noting that these improvements are likely to show up on the older Windows 11 releases.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Widgets no longer require a Microsoft Account.</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Many people prefer using Windows 11 with a local account. In the Moment 2 update, they can finally use Windows Widgets without signing in with a Microsoft Account. It is a great change, especially after Microsoft allowed third-party developers to publish their widgets in the Microsoft Store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Third-party Widgets</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can now find more widgets for Windows 11. The amount of available options right now is somewhat depressing, but at least we are finally moving in the right direction. By the time of publishing the review, widgets in the Microsoft Store include Facebook Messenger, Spotify, Xbox, and Phone Link.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Full-screen mode</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new full-screen mode provides more space for widgets and news in the feed. You can activate it by clicking the button next to your profile image in the widgets board's upper-right corner.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Microsoft still pushes lots of utter trash to the news feed, so we blurred parts of the screenshot below to preserve your sanity.</em>
</p>

<p>
	Windows 11's first feature update (2022 Update) <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/what-is-new-in-windows-11-22h2-the-first-feature-update-for-the-newest-os/#TaskManager" rel="external nofollow">introduced a redesigned Task Manager</a>. It was a significant change for one of the most critical components of the operating system, and now Microsoft has prepared several noteworthy improvements.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Search in Task Manager</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can now search for processes, apps, services, and other data in Task Manager. The app has received a prominent search box on top of its window, allowing customers to find the needed data quickly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142235_task_manager_search.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="400" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142235_task_manager_search.jpg">

	<strong>New personalization settings</strong>
</p>

	In addition, Task Manager allows customizing its appearance independently from the rest of the operating system. You can set Task Manager to always stay in light or dark mode or follow the global system settings.
</p>

<h3>
	<a id="SettingsImprovements" name="SettingsImprovements" rel=""></a>Settings Improvements

<p>
	The Settings app is another Windows 11 area Microsoft never ignores whenever it launches a new feature update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Brand-new Energy Recommendations Section</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As a part of Microsoft's global push to make its software more eco-friendly, Windows 11 now features a new Settings section for making your computer "greener." The Energy Recommendations section shows several tips on reducing your carbon footprint: reduce screen timeout, enable dark mode, allow the computer to sleep faster, lower brightness, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can apply the recommendations in one click, which saves time and effort in finding the related settings. Then Windows 11 will give you an energy efficiency score depending on how many tips you have applied, similar to how electric vehicles evaluate your driving efficiency.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1677142198_energy_recommendations.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="400" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2023/02/1677142198_energy_recommendations.jpg">

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Recycle and Trade-in</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of sustainability and reducing carbon footprint, the Settings app now provides links to help users learn how to recycle or trade in their computers. You can find those links in <strong>Settings &gt; System &gt; About</strong>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<h3>
	<a id="AccessibilityImprovements" name="AccessibilityImprovements" rel=""></a>Accessibility Improvements
</h3>

<p>
	The Moment 2 update does not offer new accessibility features, but it has a few improvements for those using <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/what-is-new-in-windows-11-22h2-the-first-feature-update-for-the-newest-os/#Accessibility" rel="external nofollow">the recently introduced Voice Access</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Improved Voice Access</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Voice Access is the feature that lets you control your computer using your voice, hence the name. It divides the display by zones, allowing you to select a zone for interaction. In the Windows 11 Moment 2 Update, Microsoft has made Voice Access more flexible and added support for more user interface controls, such as those having numbers in their names, names without whitespace (PivotTable, for example), and names with special characters (Bluetooth &amp; devices).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, Voice Access now supports spin and thumb controls and split buttons. It also lets you scroll to the extreme left and right and utilize continuous side scroll.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<hr>
<p>

</p>

<p>
	Overall, the Moment 2 update is a solid update (we give it 7 rounded corners out of 11) packed with features for every customer. True, it is not as big as the initial release or the 2022 Update, but you should keep in mind that Microsoft is now stretching one yearly update across several smaller releases to publish every three or four months. More features will soon arrive; meanwhile, we can enjoy changes that make Windows 11 more polished and convenient to use.

In this article, we will walk you through the steps of enabling the protections right now.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="websites-open-in-app-prompts-scaled.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="533" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/websites-open-in-app-prompts-scaled.jpg" />
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The prompts are common on mobile devices, but may also be experienced on desktop devices. Sites like Instagram, Reddit, Twitter and many more try to get the user to open the content in the dedicated app of the service, and not in the browser.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Some sites even go as far as to limit access to the available content, or display the prompt multiple times to make it as annoying as possible to the user.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Brave plans to enable a custom filter lists in Brave Browser 1.49 for Android and desktop operating systems that hides these prompts automatically when the user visits a site that makes use of those. The feature has been enabled on iOs for <a href="https://reclaimthenet.org/brave-browser-ios-advanced-ad-blocking" rel="external nofollow">some time</a> already.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Brave 1.49 is the next major release of the web browser. Once enabled, many of the "open in app" prompts are not displayed anymore on sites visited in the browser. A quick test on popular destinations confirmed that Brave did indeed hide the prompts when opening most of these sites.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Brave states that native apps do not offer the same privacy protections as Brave Browser. Clearly, Brave is also interested that users keep on using Brave, instead of switching to a dedicated application their device to access the content.</span>
</p>

<h2>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Enable this right now</span>
</h2>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Brave users do not need to wait until Brave 1.49 to enable the new feature. It is powered by Fanboy’s Mobile Notifications List, which users may enable in current versions of Brave Browser as well.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Here is how that is done:</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		<span style="font-size:14px;">Load brave://adblock in Brave for Android or Brave for the desktop.</span>
	</li>
	<li>
		<span style="font-size:14px;">Find Fanboy's Mobile Notifications List on the page (you may need to zoom out to make the page readable on Android devices), and check it.</span>
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">That is all. Brave will use the list now for all sites that are loaded from that moment on. Note that sites open in existing tabs need to be reloaded before the new list is applied to them as well.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">The entire list is available <a href="https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-mobile-notifications.txt" rel="external nofollow">here</a> as a text file. You can check it out to see what is is blocking once it is enabled. The list of supported sites is large and some sites have multiple instructions, as they may be using different types of banners and code to display the prompts to visiting users.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Please note that you may enable the list in several other content blockers as well. Users of uBlock Origin may import the <a href="https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-mobile-notifications.txt" rel="external nofollow">https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-mobile-notifications.txt</a> URL on the custom filter lists page in the extension's settings to enable support for it. Similarly, imports should be available in several other content blockers.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong><span style="font-size:14px;">Closing Words</span></strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Open in app prompts make accessing specific content annoying. This is especially the case when users follow links to sites that use these. Instead of accessing the linked content right away, they get bombarded with prompts to open the content in dedicated apps instead.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">While it may make sense to install dedicated apps if a service is used regularly, it is usually not the best option for occasional visits.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

	Last week, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-dev-build-25300-has-new-snap-layouts-fixes-winre-issue-and-much-more/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft introduced Windows 11 build 25300</a> with several new features and fixes, including unannounced improvements (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-now-has-a-dedicated-shortcut-for-the-new-volume-mixer/" rel="external nofollow">an updated volume mixer</a>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/settings-app-in-windows-11-is-about-to-get-a-lot-of-new-features-and-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">new Settings</a>, and more). One of the announced changes was a slightly redone Snap Layouts, designed to improve discoverability and ease of use. The updated version featured reduced trigger time, a brief Snap Layouts explanation, and an app icon inside the selected zone. However, after a few days of testing, Microsoft discovered an issue with the new feature, leading the company to halt the experiment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Microsoft says in the updated <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2023/02/15/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-25300/" rel="external nofollow">announcement post</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	Due to an issue discovered from Insider feedback, we have paused trying out different treatments for snap layouts for the time being.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The release of the updated Snap Layouts coincided with a report about <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-snap-assist-may-get-some-ai-features-like-saving-snap-layouts-in-the-future/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft planning to equip the feature with AI to automate window snapping and make it smarter</a>. The idea sounds interesting, but we are seemingly far from its implementation since Microsoft has yet to sort out bugs in the "brainless" version of Snap Layouts before delivering a more advanced one.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although Microsoft has ended the experiment, you can still enable the updated Snap Layouts with the vivetool app <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-testing-improved-snap-assist-for-windows-11-here-is-how-to-enable-it/" rel="external nofollow">as described in our guide</a>. However, keep in mind that the company has rolled back the feature for a reason, so enabling it may result in a severe issue or bug. As usual, proceed at your own risk and remember to back up important data.

	Earlier this month, we covered a story about <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reportedly-shows-full-screen-windows-11-upgrade-ads-with-two-yes-buttons/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft showing a silly full-screen Windows 11 upgrade prompt with two "yes" buttons</a>. Back then, we said that making a device unsupported by disabling TPM was one way to ensure the ad would not appear on your computer. As it turned out, we were wrong: Microsoft is now carpet-bombing all Windows 10 users with that prompt, and even devices with notable outdated and unsupported specs are receiving an offer to upgrade to Windows 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The confusing prompts were spotted by @<a href="https://twitter.com/PhantomOfEarth/status/1628846752630439937" rel="external nofollow">PhantomOfEarth</a>, and we could reproduce them on our virtual machines with specs way below the required: 2GB of RAM, two CPU cores, 60GB of storage, and no TPM. Despite that, the Settings app said the machine could download Windows 11 version 22H2. Moreover, after applying the latest cumulative updates, we were greeted with that full-screen upgrade prompt with the two "yes" buttons.

	It is even funnier that rejecting the offer got us to another screen, where Microsoft tried its luck once again by claiming it recommends Windows 11 for our unsupported virtual machine with 2GB of RAM and no TPM. Fantastic!

	Unlike <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/people-on-unsupported-hardware-are-being-offered-windows-11-22h2-upgrade" rel="external nofollow">a similar situation from June 2022</a>, agreeing to download and install Windows 11 this time results in the process failing due to unsupported hardware. The limitations are still there, so those with computers that do not meet Microsoft's demands must opt for other methods to get Windows 11. Fortunately, installing Windows 11 on an unsupported PC is easy, and you have plenty of options, such as <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/rufus/" rel="external nofollow">Rufus</a>. You probably should not be upset by Microsoft teasing you with the operating system your computer cannot install officially.

	If you are a part of the Windows Insider program, and are a part of the Windows 11 Beta Channel to get new preview builds of the OS, you may decide you no longer want to participate in this program. Today, Microsoft announced an off-ramp for those users, which will allow them to no longer get new Windows 11 Beta builds.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2023/02/16/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-22621-1325-and-22623-1325/" rel="external nofollow">Today's blog post</a> states this new off-ramp program is for users who have Windows 11 Insider Preview builds <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-insider-preview-beta-builds-kb5022914-launched-with-new-widgets-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">22621.1325 or 22623.1325 installed</a>. If you decide to update beyond .1325, the off-ramp will no longer be available. If you want to go through with it, just go to <strong>Settings &gt; Windows Update &gt; Windows Insider Program</strong> and then select "<strong>Stop getting preview builds</strong>”. The post stated:
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	During this off-ramp, a troubleshooter will run that will unenroll the device from receiving new flights in the Beta Channel and uninstall the enablement package (EKB) if needed. Once the troubleshooter finishes – a reboot will be required to complete the process. After that, the device will no longer receive new Insider Preview builds from the Beta Channel. To see if this troubleshooter has been run on your device, go to Settings &gt; Troubleshoot &gt; Recommended troubleshooter history.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Only a few Windows 11 Insiders will be selected immediately to get the troubleshooter but all will be added early next week. After the process is completed, users will get the upgrade to the stable Windows 11 build with March's "Patch Tuesday" release, which will give your PC Windows 11, version 22H2. This off-ramp window wil also close on March 8, after which time PCs still enrolled in the Beta Channel will continue to receive newer builds.

	Microsoft continues adding more features to its PowerToys toolbox that recently received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/powertoys-0670-is-out-with-quick-access-system-tray-launcher-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">a new Quick Access launcher</a>. The next utility to arrive in PowerToys is "PastePlain"—a simple module that allows pasting text without its original formatting.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Modern browsers have a dedicated shortcut for stripping the copied text off its styling (Ctrl + Shift + V). However, it is not available system-wide, and Microsoft now aims to fix the inconvenience by introducing the PastePlain module for PowerToys. According to the project's pull request on GitHub, PastePlain is based on the recently introduced Text Extractor module.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	This is heavily based on the work done for the "Text Extractor" module then ripping out anything that may be unnecessary. The same KeyboardMonitor is implemented and used. The interesting logic really falls inside the KeyboardMonitor as that is where the clipboard is opened/read/modified, then a ctrl+v input sequence is injected.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By default, PastePlain will use the Ctrl + Win + V key sequence to paste unformatted text, and, like most PowerToys utilities, it will let you create a custom shortcut.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There is no information on when users can get their hands on the PastePlain tool. However, you can follow the project on PowerToys' GitHub repository. Also, check out <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-powertoys-0671-reverts-registry-changes-fixes-fancyzones-bugs-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">the latest PowerToys feature update in our dedicated article</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The PowerToys app is available on Windows 10 and 11. You can download it from <a href="https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/XP89DCGQ3K6VLD" rel="external nofollow">the Microsoft Store</a>, winget, <a href="https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases" rel="external nofollow">or GitHub</a>.

	Last week, we learned that the latest <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/more-patch-tuesday-troubles-ensue-as-secure-boot-breaks-on-vmware-leading-to-boot-fails/" rel="external nofollow">Patch Tuesday update is causing Secure Boot issues on VMware virtual machines</a>, leading to boot fails. While the latest problem confirmed by Microsoft does not originate from Patch Tuesday, it does affect lots of versions of Windows, but only in Croatia.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Basically, <a href="https://www.ecb.europa.eu/pub/economic-bulletin/focus/2023/html/ecb.ebbox202208_02~15fd36600a.en.html" rel="external nofollow">Croatia joined the Eurozone at the start of January 2023</a> and adopted the euro as its official currency. However, Windows locale data still contains its previous currency, the Kuna. This discrepancy affects applications which pull in data from Windows devices to show you prices in your regional currency, meaning that they will be showing costs in Kuna, rather than Euro.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For now, <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-22H2#3021msgdesc" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft has issued a workaround</a>, which you can view below and apply if you reside in Croatia:
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Open the "Windows Region" settings. This can be done in one of the following ways:
		<ul>
			<li>
				Open "Control Panel" from the start menu and select "Change date, time, or number formats" under "Clock and Region"
			</li>
			<li>
				On your keyboard, press and hold the Windows key, then press the letter R. This will open the "Run" window. Type INTL.CPL into the Open field
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		In the Region settings, choose one of the 2 locales for Croatia:
		<ul>
			<li>
				Croatian (Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina)
			</li>
			<li>
				Croatian (Croatia)
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		In this same window, click the "Additional settings" button. Once there, click the "Currency" tab.
	</li>
	<li>
		Change the currency symbol from "KN" to Euro, "€"
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The problem affects the following versions of Windows:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<strong>Client</strong>

		<ul>
			<li>
				Windows 11, version 22H2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10, version 22H2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 11, version 21H2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10, version 21H2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10, version 20H2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10, version 1809
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10, version 1607
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Server</strong>
		<ul>
			<li>
				Windows Server 2022
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server, version 20H2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server, version 1809
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server 2019
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server 2012 R2
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server 2012
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
			</li>
			<li>
				Windows Server 2008 SP2
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although the workaround will mitigate the problem for Croatian users, Microsoft plans to permanently fix it via a Windows update at some point in the future.

	With the upcoming Moment 2 feature update for Windows 11 22H2, expected next month, a bunch of performance upgrades and improvements, alongside features, await users. For example, AMD is beginning to release its new chipset driver meant to boost the performance of its X3D CPUs, however, the driver is <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-ryzen-501292026-chipset-driver-boosts-windows-11-and-10-performance/" rel="external nofollow">yet to be publicly announced</a> by AMD. Meanwhile, for those bothered by the file copy slowdown bug, the issue will be resolved with the upcoming Moment 2 update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those not aware, Microsoft opened an issue related to file copy slowdown mainly over networks, though local setups may also have been affected. Initially thought to be related to the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, a Microsoft employee later confirmed that the issue was more deep-rooted as it was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-windows-11-22h2-file-copy-performance-bug-could-be-far-worse-than-first-thought/" rel="external nofollow">related to the kernel itself</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The issue was later <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-finally-fixes-windows-11-22h2-file-copy-kernel-bug-but-you-may-not-get-it/" rel="external nofollow">partly patched on the Insider channel</a>, and additional fixes were also <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-additional-fix-for-major-windows-11-22h2-file-copy-kernel-bug/" rel="external nofollow">released around two weeks later</a>. A couple of days back, the fix was sent out to Insiders flighting the Release Preview channel. This latest Release Preview build is essentially what becomes the Moment 2 feature update, expected to land next month. The latest Release Preview build 22621.1343 (KB5022913) <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-release-preview-kb5022913-makes-installing-updates-more-reliable-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">changelog says</a><span>:</span>

	<span style="font-size:22px;">You can add Snap's rival cross-distro packaging format back in yourself</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Canonical has issued an official edict: the approved Ubuntu remixes must remove Flatpak support as of the next release.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The various Ubuntu flavors are not Canonical products. Only the original Ubuntu, with the GNOME desktop, is the "real thing." Even so, the company does have some control as it's Canonical that officially sanctions and endorses what is an official flavor, and what isn't. And Canonical has spoken: From the next release, no official variant shall support Flatpak any more. Canonical has its own official cross-platform packaging format, Snap, and as from version 23.04, only Snap is to be built in. The Flatpak plugin for the Software store will be removed too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The eight official flavors – or remixes, as The Reg FOSS desk tends to call them – are Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, and Xubuntu. The requirements for recognition are fairly simple. Among them are that all the components must come from the Ubuntu repositories, releases must be synced with those of the primary distro, bugs must be tracked through Launchpad, and so on.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	(We note with interest that no "Kinetic Kudu" release of Ubuntu Kylin is on Ubuntu's downloads page, although there are test builds of "Lunar Lobster", so maybe it won't be dropped just yet.)
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In our story about Ubuntu Unity becoming an official flavor, we mentioned that it includes Flatpak support by default. It wasn't the first, though: that was Ubuntu MATE, which added Flatpak in 22.04. Among others, it appears in the manifest for Kubuntu 22.10, and it was slated to be added in Xubuntu 23.04.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There are of course lots of unofficial Ubuntu-based distros, some of which we've looked at: Ubuntu Cinnamon still isn't official, although its young maintainer, Joshua Peisach, is aiming for official status.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Franco-Hibernian rival project Linux Mint definitely isn't official, nor does it seek to be. Nor is its neighbor, the Ukraino-Hibernian Zorin OS, the New Zealand-led Linux Lite, or Teejeetech's lightweight but galvanized Zinc. They are free to include or remove whatever they want. As such, Mint ditches Snap, replacing it with Flatpak. Both Linux Lite and Zinc have neither format pre-installed, although Zinc offers Nala and Deb-Get instead. ZorinOS installs both systems, and the paid editions of Zorin OS include dozens of pre-installed Flatpak apps, which is why it takes a whopping 30-plus gigabytes of disk.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you like Flatpak – and a lot of people do – then you needn't worry. The Flatpak tooling will remain in Ubuntu's repositories, so you will be able to add it back in very easily, as described on Flathub. There are just three steps, and you can even skip one of those if you don't use the graphical software store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Despite strong popular support for Flatpak, as we covered in our first report from the Ubuntu Summit, Canonical stands firmly behind its Snap format. It's not surprising that it doesn't want Snap's main rival included by default. Snap remains the more capable tool: it supports server apps on machines with no GUI, which Flatpak can't, and it's the only packaging format in Ubuntu Core.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There are Flatpak-only distros, such as the Debian-based Endless OS and Red Hat's Fedora spins, the GNOME-based Silverblue and its KDE-based counterpart Kinoite. However, in addition to Flatpak, they all need to include OStree as well to handle OS updates – because Flatpak can't do that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On machines with sophisticated file systems, such as Btrfs in Fedora, it's possible to use compression to reduce the space used by the duplicate files inside Flatpaks. The especially intrepid could also enable deduplication.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Each Snap package is a single file, so these sort of features won't give any benefit – but Snaps are compressed with the standard squashfs tool anyway, which is intelligent enough to decompress only the requested files on the fly, not the whole file system every time. Every Snap is compressed, regardless of the underlying file system, and recent versions let the packager choose between different compression algorithms.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ubuntu 21.10 packaged Firefox as a Snap, and users saw slower startup times as a result. So Canonical switched to an algorithm that did faster decompression, resulting in 50 per cent faster launches.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Yes, there is only one official Snap store, Canonical's own Snapcraft. But don't believe the FUD: it's perfectly possible to run your own if you wish. There's nothing proprietary in there, the APIs are documented, and the tools to publish a Snap store online are in Ubuntu's repositories. As we covered a year ago, the maintainer of Ubuntu Unity published his own, called lol, as a proof of concept.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We have to point out that there are several downsides to having multiple cross-platform packagers installed. They don't understand one another's dependency mechanisms, which will lead to significant duplication of large packages. Updates also become more tricky. Whether you use the apt or apt-get commands, a replacement such as Aptitude, Nala, or Wajig, it doesn't matter: none of these will update Flatpak apps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Snaps have to be updated separately, and Ubuntu schedules this as a background task by default. Flatpak users have to do that manually.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We find it perfectly understandable for Canonical to make this move, and we sympathize. It has its own tool to promote, which is arguably superior, and if it doesn't want to endorse rivals, that's fair enough. Nothing is being put in to prevent users from installing Flatpak if they so wish. The change will take effect from the late-April release of all the Ubuntu Lunar Lobster flavors. ®
</p>

	</li>
	<li>
		<span style="font-size:14px;">Snipping Tool screen recording capabilities.</span>
	</li>
	<li>
		<span style="font-size:14px;">Notepad with tabs.</span>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">There is a chance that some of these features won't make it into this update. Last minute bugs or fine-tuning may move certain features to the next Moments update instead.</span>

	Bad news for Windows Insiders thirsty for a new build: the official Windows Insider Twitter account has revealed that all plans to ship a new update in the Dev or Beta Channel are out of the window. Those testing early Windows 11 preview updates can take a few days off and return for a new release after the upcoming weekend.

	Users expect the company to unveil <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/first-look-at-the-upcoming-file-explorer-redesign-in-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">the rumored File Explorer redesign</a> with new sections (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-may-soon-ditch-directui-and-move-to-xaml-winappsdk-on-next-gen-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">recently spotted in the latest 25300 build</a>), <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-now-has-a-dedicated-shortcut-for-the-new-volume-mixer/" rel="external nofollow">a brand-new volume mixer</a>, and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/settings-app-in-windows-11-is-about-to-get-a-lot-of-new-features-and-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">many Settings improvements</a>. Windows Insiders preferring more stable releases also anticipate significant updates, such as Moment 2 in the Release Preview Channel and Moment 3 in Beta.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft pushed <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-release-preview-kb5022913-makes-installing-updates-more-reliable-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">a new Release Preview build earlier this week</a>, so those testing Windows 11 in that channel probably should not get their hopes too high (even though Microsoft has not mentioned the Release Preview Channel in the tweet). Still, rumors say Microsoft plans to release the Moment 2 update in March, so it is time for the company to release it to Windows Insiders for final testing. As for Dev and Beta, no luck this week.

	If you are an AMD fan or a user, it looks like you could be in for a treat as the company is making some big improvements in terms of performance and optimizations. While our own testing to evaluate the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-latest-windows-11-driver-seemingly-brings-finewine-magic-to-ray-tracing-and-much-more/" rel="external nofollow">ray tracing boost rumors</a> ended up delivering <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-2321-windows-10--11-driver-is-no-threat-to-nvidias-ray-tracing-crown-anytime-soon/" rel="external nofollow">more bad than good results</a>, there are several postitive aspects as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For example, earlier today, the company released its latest WHQL display driver which promises to fix DirectX 11-based <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-fixes-microsoft-dx-11-ryzen-and-radeon-performance-issues-on-windows-11-and-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">"situational" performance issues</a> affecting both Radeon GPUs and Ryzen processors. Aside from that, more performance improvements and optimizations are coming with the upcoming AMD Ryzen chipset driver as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those not familiar with the matter, back in January, soon after the company had announced its Ryzen 7000X3D series chips, AMD promised to deliver <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-says-windows-11-performance-boost-is-coming-soon-to-its-ryzen-7000x3d-and-possibly-more/" rel="external nofollow">special optimization for the new 3D V-cache CPUs</a> for Windows 11 and Windows 10. This didn't really sound like a hype talk just to get people interested as indeed there were technical reasons why such optimization will have been necessary as it is related to<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-says-windows-11-performance-boost-is-coming-soon-to-its-ryzen-7000x3d-and-possibly-more/" rel="external nofollow"> how the V-cache has been implemented</a> in the new 7000X3D chips. With the new WHQL-signed chipset driver version 5.01.29.2026, AMD will deliver the 3D V-Cache Performance Optimizer Driver version 1.0.0.7 that is expected to bring the special optimizations to Windows 11 as well as Windows 10.

	While AMD's website doesn't publicly list these chipset drivers yet, the upcoming driver is beginning to be listed by motherboard partners like ASRock, who has <a href="https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X670E%20Taichi%20Carrara/index.us.asp#Download" rel="external nofollow">published the driver</a> for its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/asrock-announces-x670e-motherboard-series-for-amd-ryzen-7000-processors/" rel="external nofollow">X670E Taichi Carrara</a> flagship motherboard. The AMD 5.01.29.2026 chipset driver is also available on third-party website <a href="https://www.station-drivers.com/index.php/fr-ca/component/remository/func-startdown/5695/lang,fr-ca/" rel="external nofollow">Station-drivers</a> [do not click if you do not wish to download the driver].

	In related news, the Santa Clara company also recently published about high severity security flaw affecting its Ryzen Master software. Hence, Zen CPU users are advised to update to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-wants-you-to-update-to-the-latest-ryzen-master-on-windows-11-and-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">Ryzen Master version 2.10.1.2287</a>.

	Earlier today, we <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-2321-windows-10--11-driver-is-no-threat-to-nvidias-ray-tracing-crown-anytime-soon/" rel="external nofollow">tested and published our own report</a> evaluating some of the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-latest-windows-11-driver-seemingly-brings-finewine-magic-to-ray-tracing-and-much-more/" rel="external nofollow">recent rumors of performance boost</a> regarding ray tracing on AMD graphics cards. Although AMD fans would probably have loved to see some massive gains, things <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-2321-windows-10--11-driver-is-no-threat-to-nvidias-ray-tracing-crown-anytime-soon/" rel="external nofollow">were more bad than good</a>, at least in our test scenario. However, while that wasn't such a cheery situation, AMD's newest <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-2322-whql-driver-has-support-for-atomic-heart-and-company-of-heroes-3/" rel="external nofollow">WHQL driver version 23.2.2</a> claims to fix certain performance issues on its Radeon RX 6000 cards and Ryzen processors in Microsoft's DirectX 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-2322-whql-driver-has-support-for-atomic-heart-and-company-of-heroes-3/" rel="external nofollow">fixed issues section</a> in the release notes for the latest driver mentions:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	Situational performance drop may be observed in DirectX® 11 based games on Radeon™ RX 6000 series GPUs using Ryzen™ processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	An interesting thing to note here is that the issue wasn't documented in previous AMD driver notes in the open issues section, and could explain why the company specifies that the performance bugs were "situational" as they may have been difficult to trigger or replicate consistently. Although AMD specifically mentions its 6000 series GPUs in the changelog, the company does not highlight any specific Ryzen family, indicating the issues were probably prevalent on all Zen-based systems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In related news, AMD also promised <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-says-windows-11-performance-boost-is-coming-soon-to-its-ryzen-7000x3d-and-possibly-more/" rel="external nofollow">performance optimizations for Windows</a> related to its new Ryzen 7000X3D processors. Besides that, Linux users also have something to cheer about as latest testing shows <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/linux-amd-ryzen-users-can-rejoice-as-testing-shows-massive-performance-gains-over-the-years/" rel="external nofollow">some enormous gains for Ryzen over the years</a>.
