<p>
	Canonical <a href="https://ubuntu.com/blog/lunar-lobster-has-landed" rel="external nofollow">has shared</a> the default wallpaper that it will use in the upcoming Ubuntu 23.04 “Lunar Lobster” release due on April 20. Taking the word “Lunar”, the company decided to run with an astrology-based approach to the wallpaper and made the lobster into a constellation. There’s a full-on purple-orangish version of the wallpaper which will serve as default and a black-and-white version (check the gallery below) for those with more sensitive eyes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Explaining a bit about what users can look forward to, in mumbo-jumbo astrology speak, Ubuntu Project Manager Oliver Smith said:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	“A rising Lunar Lobster is rumoured to bring good luck to IT managers looking to deploy and manage Ubuntu Desktop at scale. Also ascendant are Ubuntu gamers as the Steam snap moves closer to a stable release.
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	The legacy Ubuntu Desktop installer is beginning its descent this year to be replaced by Subiquity, a new installer that aligns the desktop and server codebases alongside a refined first time user experience. Finally, the desktop environment will soon complete its transition to GNOME 44 to ensure good health and usability improvements for all users.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Aside from the two default lobster wallpapers, the Ubuntu community submitted some wallpapers too. Canonical picked out ten of those which you’ll be able to see down below in the gallery section.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While new wallpapers are certainly an enticing way to lure people in, it’s important to keep in mind that this version of Ubuntu will only be supported for a short time, therefore, it’s best to stay on an <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/canonical-releases-ubuntu-2204-lts-with-upgraded-kernel-and-gnome-desktop/" rel="external nofollow">LTS version of Ubuntu</a> on production machines.

	Time and again, Microsoft has stated that Windows 11 is the best OS for gaming. First in mid-2022, when <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reinforces-windows-11-as-the-best-for-gaming-as-directstorage-finally-hits-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">DirectStorage for PC was first announced</a>, and more recently, earlier this year, with a video that was perhaps a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reiterates-windows-11-22h2-is-the-best-thing-for-gaming-with-a-bit-awkward-video/" rel="external nofollow">little awkward</a>; and this was just days after testing showed <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-is-still-not-really-faster-than-windows-10-despite-what-microsoft-suggested/" rel="external nofollow">nearly no discernible difference</a> between it and Windows 10, at least in terms of performance.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Reports have suggested in the past that certain security features which are enabled by default in Windows 11, like Virtualization-based Security (VBS) or Core Isolation/Memory Integrity, can lead between massive to noticeable performance loss, even on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-vbs-apparently-cripples-gaming-performance-in-windows-11-even-on-supported-cpus/" rel="external nofollow">officially supported Windows 11 CPUs</a> (Microsoft has itself <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/disable-these-features-to-improve-gaming-performance-in-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">recommended disabling it</a>). And now, it looks like Microsoft is also enabling VBS by default on Windows 10 22H2 as well. <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-vbs-harms-performance-rtx-4090" rel="external nofollow">Tom's Hardware's</a> Avram Piltch noticed that Memory Integrity was enabled on their clean-installed Windows 10 build.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The publication also conducted a round of testing across 15 titles at four different game settings and resolution. These gaming tests were run on a Windows 11 system powered by the AMD Ryzen 7950X3D, which has already proved itself to be the most efficient gaming CPU, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-new-windows-driver-already-paying-dividends-as-ryzen-7950x3d-murders-intel-i9-13900k/" rel="external nofollow">completely blowing Intel out of the water</a>, and an Nvidia RTX 4090.
</p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While one would expect the biggest performance deltas at 1080p, which is the most CPU bound resolution out of all the three, it is really hard to predict, as it seems performance is all over the place depending on the settings used. Overall, it is a 5% drop with VBS on. You can view the full performance chart in the image above. Although this test was only on Windows 11, it is likely that VBS is going to have similar impact on Windows 10 as recent tests have s<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-is-still-not-really-faster-than-windows-10-despite-what-microsoft-suggested/" rel="external nofollow">howed performance on the two OSs are in the same ballpark</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft isn't the only company which is having to deal with performance loss at the moment though, as both AMD and Nvidia have also had buggy drivers recently. On the former, a rare bug in the driver is causing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-amd-driver-bug-causing-over-50-performance-hit-but-luckily-its-rare/" rel="external nofollow">over 50% performance</a> loss, meanwhile Nvidia just fixed a high CPU usage bug with its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-53129-whql-driver-fixes-high-cpu-bug-confirms-hogwarts-legacy-black-screen-issue/" rel="external nofollow">latest Game Ready driver</a>.

	For open source C code, curses mean quality, a recent bachelor’s thesis suggests.

<div itemprop="articleBody">

		Ever find yourself staring at a tricky coding problem and thinking, “shit”?
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If those thoughts make their way into your code or the associated comments, you’re in good company. When undergraduate student Jan Strehmel from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology analyzed open source code written in the programming language C, he found no shortage of obscenity. While that might be expected, Strehmel’s overall finding might not be: The average quality of code containing swears was significantly higher than the average quality of code that did not.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		“The results are quite surprising!” Strehmel said. Programmers and scientists may have a lot of follow-up questions. Are the researchers sure there aren’t certain profanity-prone programmers skewing the results? What about other programming languages? And, most importantly, why would swears correlate with high-quality code? The work is ongoing, but even without all the answers, one thing’s for sure: Strehmel just wrote one hell of a bachelor’s thesis.

		Strehmel’s supervisor, Bioinformatician Alexandros Stamatakis, started wondering how swears affect code quality after a lab member showed him <a href="https://www.vidarholen.net/contents/wordcount/" rel="external nofollow">a graph</a> of the prevalence of swears in various versions of the code underlying Linux. Stamatakis realized he had the perfect tool for asking whether profanity correlates with the quality of code. A program <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-89495-8" rel="external nofollow">called SoftWipe</a>, developed by his lab, measures adherence to coding standards, such as the use of quality checks and a simple code structure.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To investigate, Strehmel pulled around 3,800 examples of code containing swears, along with 7,600 examples of code that did not, from GitHub. SoftWipe revealed that on average, code containing swears scored about half a point higher on its 10- point scale of code quality than code that did not. “My reaction was that this is cool!” Stamatakis said. He frequently finds himself swearing at his own code, although he tends not to document his outbursts in text. Nonetheless, he wonders if his past curses may help his career progress: “Maybe that has helped me to become a full professor!” he said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Psychologists have long known that swearing can <a href="https://journals.lww.com/neuroreport/Abstract/2009/08050/Swearing_as_a_response_to_pain.4.aspx" rel="external nofollow">relieve pain</a>, increase <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1469029216301352" rel="external nofollow">physical performance</a>, and help people <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2211695816301647" rel="external nofollow">shape their personas</a>. In fact, cognitive psychologist Benjamin Bergen from the University of California San Diego—author of the book, What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, Our Brains, and Ourselves—makes a point to swear once during every college lecture he teaches (in a way that’s unlikely to offend the class) because there’s evidence that profanity, when <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/08934215.2014.927518?needAccess=true" rel="external nofollow">used strategically</a>, may increase <a href="https://www.scirp.org/(S(i43dyn45teexjx455qlt3d2q))/reference/ReferencesPapers.aspx?ReferenceID=2112660" rel="external nofollow">student engagement</a>.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But the link between swearing and code quality has not been examined before, as far as Bergen knows, and the suggestion that there’s a connection is a “very exciting, interesting idea,” he said.
	</p>

	<h2>
		The power of personality
	</h2>

	<p>
		Programmers who swear may be more emotionally engaged with their work than those who don’t, Bergen hypothesized, which could lead them to produce higher-quality products. Alternatively, programmers may include profanity to amuse or shock people who read their code—and if they expect their code to be read, they may put extra effort into it. It’s likely that swearing is a “symptom of something deeper going on,” Bergen said, and he’d like to see future work focus on the underlying cause of the association.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Software engineer Greg Wilson, who now works at the biotech company Deep Genomics, isn’t surprised to see coders’ personalities entering their work through their word choices. Wilson co-founded an organization called The Carpentries that teaches scientists to become good coders and says, “I don’t know anybody who’s good at anything who leaves themselves out of it.”
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Wilson is excited to see researchers tackling the question of what makes code good, although Strehmel’s results are preliminary. Coders lag behind other disciplines in terms of how they evaluate their own work, he says. Unlike architects, who have nuanced ways of describing why a building is beautiful, programmers “can say that something is an elegant solution, and then we run out of words.”
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		He does worry about the impacts that profanity can have if it appears directed at junior programmers, however. <a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3377816.3381732" rel="external nofollow">Aggressive language</a> has been cited as one factor that discourages people—especially those from groups that are <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/science/elements/after-years-of-abusive-e-mails-the-creator-of-linux-steps-aside" rel="external nofollow">marginalized in STEM</a>—from continuing to work in software engineering. Strehmel and Stamatakis came across the occasional slurs in the code they analyzed, and they agree that there are lines programmers shouldn’t cross. At a certain point, “it stops being funny,” Stamatakis said.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Overall, however, the researchers are enjoying their work, and they have a long list of experiments planned to shore up the results and glean additional insight. When they’re ready to release their final product, Wilson is looking forward to seeing the commit message. He imagines it reading, “holy shit, it worked!”

					Using provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/windows-hardware/test/assessments/out-of-box-experience" rel="external nofollow">Out Of Box Experience</a> might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/windows/configuration/provisioning-packages/provisioning-apply-package" rel="external nofollow">initial setup</a> are most likely to be impacted by this issue. It's the second Tuesday of the month, which means it's Patch Tuesday time again. As such, today Microsoft is rolling out the monthly security update (also called "B release") for March 2023 on Windows Server 20H2, and Windows 10 for the latest versions, 21H1, 21H2, and 22H2. The new updates are being distributed under <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/5023696" rel="external nofollow">KB5023696</a>, bumping up the builds to 19042.2728, 19044.2728, and 19045.2728. You can find standalone links to download the new update on Microsoft Update Catalog <a href="https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5023696" rel="external nofollow">at this link here</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The major highlight of the release as usual is security updates for Windows 10.
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

<p>
	This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And as is generally the case, the Redmond company has also listed the known issues in the update, which is always handy. Here are the symptoms and their respective workarounds:

				<p>
					Devices with Windows installations created from custom offline media or custom ISO image might have Microsoft Edge Legacy removed by this update, but not automatically replaced by the new Microsoft Edge. This issue is only encountered when custom offline media or ISO images are created by slipstreaming this update into the image without having first installed the standalone servicing stack update (SSU) released March 29, 2021 or later.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					<strong>Note</strong> Devices that connect directly to Windows Update to receive updates are not affected. This includes devices using Windows Update for Business. Any device connecting to Windows Update should always receive the latest versions of the SSU and latest cumulative update (LCU) without any extra steps.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>
			</td>
			<td>
				<p>
					To avoid this issue, be sure to first slipstream the SSU released March 29, 2021 or later into the custom offline media or ISO image before slipstreaming the LCU. To do this with the combined SSU and LCU packages now used for Windows 10, version 20H2 and Windows 10, version 2004, you will need to extract the SSU from the combined package. Use the following steps to extract the SSU:
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<ol>
					<li>
						<p>
							Extract the cab from the msu via this command line (using the package for KB5000842 as an example): <strong>expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.msu /f:Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab</strong>
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>
					</li>
					<li>
						<p>
							Extract the SSU from the previously extracted cab via this command line: <strong>expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab /f:*</strong>
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>
					</li>
					<li>
						<p>
							You will then have the SSU cab, in this example named <strong>SSU-19041.903-x64.cab</strong>. Slipstream this file into your offline image first, then the LCU.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>
					</li>
				</ol>

				<p style="font-size:small">
					If you have already encountered this issue by installing the OS using affected custom media, you can mitigate it by directly installing the new Microsoft Edge. If you need to broadly deploy the new Microsoft Edge for business, see Download and deploy Microsoft Edge for business.

	Mozilla <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/111.0/releasenotes/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">has announced</a> the release of Firefox 111.0. Firefox releases are always a bit interesting because sometimes they can be jammed with features while other times, like this time, there’s hardly anything new. The new features in this update include the enabling of Windows native notifications, Firefox Relay users can create email masks directly from the Firefox credential manager, and two new locales - Silhe Friulian (fur) and Sardinian (sc) - were added.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While the new features aren’t too exciting, the update does come with security fixes for eight high-impact bugs and several moderate-impact bugs so it’s important you still install the new update quickly so you are not targeted by malicious actors. It’s worth noting that Mozilla has released the descriptions of the bugs so clever hackers could try to exploit these while people linger on Firefox 110.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Your Firefox installation should upgrade by itself in the next few days but if you want to force the upgrade just open the Firefox menu, press Help, and then About Firefox. You should see that it’s downloading the update if you’re on version 110 and then you’ll be asked to restart the browser. You can only upgrade like this on Windows and Mac, to do it on Linux you’ll have to wait for it to be delivered through your update manager.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Firefox is a pretty capable browser with some nice privacy enhancements and speed improvements added in recent times, it has continued to lose market share. When taking desktop, mobile, and tablet stats together, StatCounter estimates that Firefox has 2.92% of the market share. On desktop alone, Firefox has declined from 9.47% this time last year to 6.84% now.

	It looks like a bad time for both AMD and Nvidia for driver updates, as both of the major GPU vendors are dealing with driver woes. AMD recently confirmed a rare bug that can cause over <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-amd-driver-bug-causing-over-50-performance-hit-but-luckily-its-rare/" rel="external nofollow">50% performance hit</a>, meanwhile Nvidia was forced to issue a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-geforce-hotfix-driver-version-53126-for-windows-1011-fixes-high-cpu-usage-bug/" rel="external nofollow">special hotfix driver</a> for a high CPU usage situation. Speaking of the high CPU bug, Nvidia has today bundled the fix into its GeForce Game Ready WHQL-certified driver so that it will now roll out to all users.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Aside from that, the new driver, version 531.29, also brings DLSS 3 technology to <em>Atomic Heart</em> and the closed beta of <em>THE FINALS</em>, and other bug fixes. Nvidia has also confirmed several issues the company is looking into, including one which causes a black screen in <em>Hogwarts Legacy</em>.

	On Thursday, March 16, Microsoft will hold an online event where it's expected that the company will reveal details of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-will-hold-the-future-of-work-with-ai-online-event-on-march-16/" rel="external nofollow">how it will add generative AI features to its Office apps</a>. Today, its productivity app rival, Google, is trying to beat Microsoft to the punch with some new generative AI features that it plans to add <a href="https://workspace.google.com/blog/product-announcements/generative-ai" rel="external nofollow">to its Workspace apps like Gmail and Docs</a>.
</p>

<p>
	Google stated:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	Blank pages can stump the best of us. That’s why we’re embedding generative AI in Docs and Gmail to help people get started writing. Whether you’re a busy HR professional who needs to create customized job descriptions, or a parent drafting the invitation for your child’s pirate-themed birthday party, Workspace saves you the time and effort of writing that first version. Simply type a topic you’d like to write about, and a draft will instantly be generated for you. With your collaborative AI partner you can continue to refine and edit, getting more suggestions as needed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google plans to adding these features to Gmail and Docs for a limited set of "trusted testers" in the US later in March and will slowly expand the feature to more users in the coming months. Google also says these new features will be <a href="https://ai.google/principles/" rel="external nofollow">under the company's AI principles</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In <a href="https://blog.google/technology/ai/ai-developers-google-cloud-workspace/" rel="external nofollow">another blog post</a>, Google offered up more info on how generative AI will help in other parts of the company. That includes a new Generative AI App Builder, which will allow businesses and governments to create their own apps with conversational AI.

	Eagle-eyed Joey Sneddon from <a href="https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/03/ubuntu-23-04-will-ship-with-linux-kernel-6-2" rel="external nofollow">OMG! Ubuntu!</a> has spotted an important detail about Ubuntu 23.04 "Lunar Lobster" in a recent <a href="https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2023-March/042512.html" rel="external nofollow">mailing list thread</a>. The next version of Ubuntu, which is due in April, will apparently ship with the Linux 6.2 kernel over the older 6.1 kernel. This detail is not only important for those who plan to use the cutting-edge version but also for those on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ubuntu-22042-delayed-by-two-weeks-over-hardware-enablement-kernel-due-feb-23/" rel="external nofollow">Ubuntu 22.04 LTS</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As pointed out by OMG! Ubuntu!, Canonical typically backports kernels from the latest release back to the most recent LTS via a hardware enablement (HWE) update. This means that those who receive the HWE update will benefit from all the latest improvements added to the kernel since Linux 5.19 was released (this kernel is included right now).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We reported yesterday that Linux 6.3 introduced <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/new-linux-kernel-patches-introduce-workaround-for-system-stuttering-on-amd-systems/" rel="external nofollow">a workaround for AMD system stuttering</a>, this was also backported to the Linux 6.1 and 6.2 kernels so those of you who have affected hardware and decide to use Ubuntu 23.04, should have no stuttering issues on your system.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you’re an Ubuntu user, it’s highly advised that you stick with LTS releases as these are supported for five years meaning you don’t need to keep performing upgrades. The intermittent releases like Ubuntu 23.04 are not even supported for a whole year so aren’t great if you’re just bothered about installing Ubuntu and forgetting about it to get actual work done.

	Microsoft has released the latest stable version of Edge. The new version, 111.0.1661.41, brings new Edge Sidebar features which is powered by Edge Copilot, and features enhanced visibility and new hover functionality. Alongside the sidebar improvements, the new release also brings a new Microsoft Feed to the New Edge Tab page, policy to clear IE Mode data, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The full changelog is given below:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>A New Microsoft Edge Sidebar.</strong> In this release, the Sidebar introduces several new features and improvements aimed at enhancing productivity, convenience, and the user experience. Here are some of the highlights:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<strong>The New Discover:</strong> Edge Copilot is a powerful tool that helps users boost their productivity and efficiency. It provides intelligent suggestions and insights based on the context of the web page and the user's goals. As the new Bing icon in the Toolbar, Edge Copilot helps users compose better emails, search the web faster, learn new skills, all done more conveniently.
	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Enhanced Sidebar Visibility:</strong> With the new Auto-Hide functionality, a user can maximize the productivity and convenience of the sidebar without sacrificing valuable screen space. The Edge Sidebar can be hidden when a user isn't using it and it only reappears when a user needs it.
	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Evolved Sidebar Interaction:</strong> The new Hover functionality lets users open the Sidebar by hovering on the Bing icon in the Toolbar. This enhances user productivity and convenience by providing a seamless and intuitive way to access their most used tools.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Admins retain the ability to control and customize the Sidebar and its experiences, as needed by using the following settings:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		If admins enable the Sidebar, users will have access to the Sidebar and Edge Copilot experience. The Sidebar will show at all times in the browser frame. Clicking on the Bing icon in the Toolbar will invoke the new Discover experience.
	</li>
	<li>
		If admins choose the 'not configured' setting, users will have access to the Sidebar and Edge Copilot experience. Unlike when the Sidebar is 'enabled', their users will have the ability to always-show or auto-hide the Sidebar.
	</li>
	<li>
		If admins disable the Sidebar, Discover and the Sidebar will be inaccessible for their users. <strong>Note:</strong> In this release, Admins do not have the ability to disable Discover and keep the Sidebar.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Additional customization options for the sidebar toolbar button are planned in future versions of Microsoft Edge.
</p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<p>
			<strong>Microsoft Feed on Microsoft 365 Edge New Tab Page.</strong> We're rolling out a new experience to the Microsoft 365 tab of the Edge Enterprise New Tab Page. This experience will feature a new layout that centers on a larger version of the Microsoft Feed, featuring more productivity content, and moves the productivity cards including Important Emails, Recent SharePoint sites, Upcoming events, and To Do to the right-hand side of the Microsoft 365 tab.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</li>
	<li>
		<p>
			<strong>Enhanced security mode improvements.</strong> Enhanced security mode now supports WebAssembly for macOS x64 and Linux x64. More cross-platform (ARM64) support is expected in the future. For more information, see <a href="/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-security-browse-safer" rel="">Browse more safely with Microsoft Edge</a>.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</li>
	<li>
		<p>
			<strong>New policy to clear IE mode data on browser exit.</strong> The <a href="/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-policies#internetexplorermodecleardataonexitenabled" rel="">InternetExplorerModeClearDataOnExitEnabled</a> policy controls whether browsing history is deleted from Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer mode every time Microsoft Edge is closed. Users can also configure this setting in the 'Clear browsing data for Internet Explorer' option in the Privacy, search, and services menu of Settings (<em>edge://settings/privacy</em>).

	It's been almost 10 months since Microsoft first announced its new <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-has-started-testing-the-one-outlook-revamp-publicly/" rel="external nofollow">One Outlook client would start testing</a> for members of the Office Insiders program. Now, it looks like the revamp of the email client will finally escape the testing phase and be made available to some more users.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The note emphasizes that Microsoft 365 customers won't be forced to switch to the new Outlook, at least not yet. It will be available first for personal Microsoft accounts along with Microsoft Exchange Online accounts.

	The new One Outlook for Windows will allow for better integration with Microsoft Teams, along with revamps to its Calendar features, a way for Outlook to automatically pin an important email to the top, and lots more. Eventually, this app will completely replace the current Outlook app, but it looks like Microsoft wants some more feedback from Current Channel users who use the toggle to make the switch to the new app.

	Microsoft has quietly made a welcome change to its AppLocker feature. AppLocker application control policies help organizations manage the applications and files that users can run on their systems. These include EXE files, scripts, Windows Installer files, DLL files, packaged apps, and packaged app installers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Redmond giant has removed the checks that were previously enforced depending on the edition of Windows used or the management method used. AppLocker deployment for Mobile Device Management (MDM) used to be different from the Group Policy management. Hence, from now on IT admins and system admins can deploy AppLocker freely across Windows 11 as well as some supported versions of Windows 10, irrespective of the edition or management method.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a support article titled "KB5024351—Removal of Windows edition checks for AppLocker" Microsoft <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5024351-removal-of-windows-edition-checks-for-applocker-e3a763c9-6a3e-4d9c-8623-0ffe69046470" rel="external nofollow">has</a> explained this major change.
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	The Windows updates dated September 30, 2022, and later, made significant changes for AppLocker support. Before the updates, Windows tied policy enforcement to the Windows edition and the method used to manage its endpoints. For instance, systems managed by mobile device management (MDM) enforced AppLocker policies on all editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Also, systems managed by Group Policy only enforced AppLocker policies on Windows 10 and Windows 11 Enterprise or Education editions.
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	These updates removed the edition checks for Windows 10, versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1 and all versions of Windows 11. You can now deploy and enforce AppLocker policies to all of these Windows versions regardless of their edition or management method.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The change was introduced on Windows 11 and Windows 10 with the following updates:

	Although it has been over a year since Microsoft released Windows 11, the original release (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-begins-rolling-out-windows-11-to-select-users-starting-today/" rel="external nofollow">version 21H2</a>), Microsoft had not formally published any guidance for those with family features set up who were upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10. However, the company is finally making that amendment as earlier today, the Redmond giant updated its previous Windows 10 upgrade page for family feature setup to now include Windows 11 as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Previously, the support page titled "Fix family features after Windows 10 upgrade" read:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	If you had previously set up family features for a child account and then upgraded to Windows 10, there are a few steps you need to take to turn on family settings again. Your child will need to sign in to Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, and then you'll need to add that account to your family group at family.microsoft.com.
</p>

<p>
	The new page with the added mention of Windows 11 titled "Fix family features after Windows 10/11 upgrade" reads:

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This was certainly a long time overdue and perhaps the firm felt the need to do this now as <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/moment_2_update/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 22H2 Moment 2 update</a> will be available to all very soon via Patch Tuesday tomorrow. There is no change in the set-up process though and involves the Microsoft account. Kodi 20.1 <a href="https://kodi.tv/article/kodi-20-1-nexus-release/" rel="external nofollow">has been released</a> today bringing with it lots of bug fixes and some backports – unfortunately, the team did admit there are no real new features in this update. As it’s a point release update, the team says it should be fine to install it over <a href="https://www.neowin.net/software/kodi-200/" rel="external nofollow">Kodi 20</a> installations without running into any issues, though, they still advise backing up any userdata beforehand just in case.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One fix that stood out pertains to right-to-left subtitles which previously displayed punctuation incorrectly due to a “too correct” implementation. Apparently, subtitle creators insert left-to-right punctuation so this was coming up weirdly in Kodi but is now resolved.

</h3>

<p>
	<strong>Audio</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		@fritsch has been working feverishly on Android-related audio issues over the past couple of months, and in combination with @thexai has introduced an algorithm to look to overcome some audio issues particularly aimed at Android devices. A summary is:
	</li>
	<li>
		Algorithm runs for 30 seconds to learn what is going on: during this time no corrections are done, but the internal m_disconAdjustTimeMs is updated to a new value whenever when the sync error is found to increase. After 30 seconds the learning stops and the final m_disconAdjustTimeMs is set as: m_disconAdjustTimeMs * 1.15 + 5.0.
	</li>
	<li>
		With firmware specialities for AudioTrack Write behaviour now kind of "well known" the systematic issue can be worked around easily. This helps users on affected system to not have to create an advancedsettings.xml for a manual fix.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>
	<strong>DVD</strong>
</p>

<p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		A fix in Samba was made that "corrected" a long-standing assumption - it turns out that documentation doesn't always match code implementation. We now handle both the old Samba implementation and the new "correct" implementation.
	</li>
	<li>
		Further improvements to the new NFS4 implementation have been made by @thexai . This fixes stalls/errors and brings some performance improvements to our NFS implementation.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Game/Retroplayer</strong>
</p>

<p>

	<li>
		Assorted fixes to the new Savestate Manager to improve usability. Thanks to @KOPRajs for reporting, and also providing the PR to fix the issues found.
	</li>
	<li>
		An assortment of OSD improvements by @garbear resolving further issues reported by @KOPRajs.
	</li>
	<li>
		A number of performance improvements (memory reads, faster dialogs/savestates).
	</li>
	<li>
		Input fixes have been made that allow resetting multitap controller inputs, as well as fixing an issue around "ignored" input buttons not being saved.
	</li>
	<li>
		Sync of some of the common controller types has been made

		Fixes various overflows when using new chrono infrastructure. This fixes "keep audio device alive" when passthrough is used with an AVR.
	</li>
	<li>
		A number of fixes by @ksooo that aim to fix regressions regarding context menu items/behaviour.
	</li>
	<li>
		A fix for an issue on 32-bit systems that affected the sorting of items. Thanks @vpeter4.
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixes regarding the rework of the Favourites window have been addressed. This returns behaviour found in v19 for the following:
	</li>
	<li>
		Support actions up/down plus key mapping for u and d keys.
	</li>
	<li>
		Support action delete plus key mapping for delete key.
	</li>
	<li>
		Change keymaps to open the Favourites Browser window instead of the Favourites dialog as currently.
	</li>
	<li>
		A fix by a returning team member (@CrystalP) that resolves crashes due to Unicode characters.
	</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>
		Fix packaging regression that affected some parts of the Python PyCryptodome module.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Windows</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		A fix was made to address an issue where some less-than-usual dimension videos were causing AMD systems to fallback to software decoding instead of using DXVA.
	</li>
	<li>
		A packaging issues on Windows platforms meant that Chorus was unable to be used. A fix was found by @CrystalP, so users wanting to access Chorus from a Windows host can now rejoice.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>PVR</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		A fix to resolve PVR Channel Groups to correctly show channels ordered as provided by a PVR backend.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Python</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		A bump of cPython to 3.11.2 was made to fix an upstream issue with the ElementTree binary module. This fixes crashes on Android when an installed addon uses the common ElementTree Python module.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Subtitles</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		A regression was fixed regarding Right to Left language subtitles placing punctuation incorrectly. It turns out that @CastagnaIT's implementation was too correct, and an informal standard adopted by subtitle creators to place punctuation in Left to Right positions in Right to Left subtitles was worked around.

	Linux kernel maintainers have backported a workaround to <a href="https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/167870146234120@kroah.com/" rel="external nofollow">Linux 6.1.19</a> and <a href="https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/1678701470253226@kroah.com/" rel="external nofollow">Linux 6.2.6</a> from Linux 6.3-rc2 to fix system stuttering on some AMD machines. <a href="https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-6.1.19-LTS-6.2.6" rel="external nofollow">According to Phoronix</a>, the updates were backported to older Linux 6 releases on Monday morning following the release of workaround on Linux 6.3-rc2 on Sunday.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The stuttering issue was noted by users with AMD Ryzen systems that were using outdated fTPM firmware. It only became an issue for Linux users after AMD’s fTPM <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/after-windows-11-and-windows-10-amd-ryzen-ftpm-stutters-and-freezes-now-hit-linux/" rel="external nofollow">hardware random number generator started being used by default</a>. If you run a distro such as Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, you probably won’t be suffering from the issue because it uses the older Linux 5.19 kernel out-of-the-box.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The patches released to the Linux kernel, it’s important to note, are just workarounds and not actually fixes for the problem. The patch just disables the hardware random number generator on fTPM versions known to suffer from the bug.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD has issued actual fixes for the problem since it was discovered last year but not all hardware has received an update yet. Where hardware has been updated, it may also be the case that people simply haven’t applied the updates on their system yet.

	Sometimes, it may be useful to display the screen of an Android device on your computer, and to control the device using the computer's mouse and keyboard. Besides gaining control over devices with a dead screen, it may also prove useful in other cases, including improving readability, for documentation and research, for watching the latest TikTok videos on your PC, using mouse and keyboard on Android, or for recording the Android screen.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the easiest options to display and control Android devices on desktop computers is provided by the open source tool <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">scrcpy</a>. The developer of the tool released version 2.0 of the application recently.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What makes scrcpy a good option, besides that it is open source, is that it requires no installation on the Android device, and just a small program on the desktop PC.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The application supports several features, including the ability to record the screen of the device, even if it is off on the Android device, two-way copy-paste functionality, support for mouse and keyboard input, audio forwarding on Android 11 and up, and more.
</p>

<h2>
	Requirements
</h2>

<p>
	There are just a few requirements. Scrcpy requires Android 5.0 or newer, but Android 11 or newer is advised, as it includes support for audio forwarding to the desktop PC.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://developer.android.com/studio/debug/dev-options" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">USB debugging</a> needs to be enabled on the Android device. It is a developer option. Different manufacturers have different ways to enable this. Usually, it involves tapping on the build number of the Android device for a few times until "you are now a developer" appears.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It may also be necessary to enable an additional USB debugging (Security settings) preference on some devices, which is explained <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/issues/70#issuecomment-373286323" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	All that is left now is to download the latest version of <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/releases" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">scrcpy</a> to the desktop computer. The software is available for Windows, Mac and Linux devices.
</p>

<h2>
	Using scrcpy
</h2>

<p>
	<img alt="android-on-windows-pc.png" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="434" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/android-on-windows-pc.png"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-188104" alt="android on windows pc" width="1629" height="984" srcset="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/android-on-windows-pc.png 1629w, https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/android-on-windows-pc-1536x928.png 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1629px) 100vw, 1629px" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/android-on-windows-pc.png"></noscript>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Connect the Android device to the desktop computer using an USB cable. Once done, open a command prompt window and run the scrcpy command from the directory of the application. You should get a prompt on Android to allow or decline the USB debugging connection.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Note</strong>: You may also use the application wirelessly, as explained on the <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://www.genymotion.com/blog/open-source-project-scrcpy-now-works-wirelessly/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">developer's blog</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Allow it for the session or permanently. Once done, the Android screen is displayed on the screen. You may now use the mouse and keyboard to control the Android device. Any action made on the PC is reflected on the Android device.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This opens up several interesting possibilities, such as taking screenshots, recording the screen or audio, or using the keyboard to write messages, comments and run searches. There is a slight delay between actions carried out on the desktop computer and the Android device; this means that some activities on the device, e.g., certain games that require quick reflexes, may not work as good using the provided functionality.
</p>

<h3>
	Closing Words
</h3>

<p>
	Scrcpy is an excellent open source application to control Android devices on desktop PCs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Now You:</strong> do you connect your mobile devices to your desktop computers?

	<span style="font-size:14px;">The Mozilla Firefox 111 web browser is now available for download for all supported platforms, including GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows, ahead of the official launch on March 14th, 2023.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Firefox 111 doesn’t look like a big release and it only introduces the ability for Firefox Relay users to opt-in to create Relay email masks directly from the Firefox credential manager. <a href="https://9to5linux.com/mozilla-firefox-109-is-available-for-download-with-new-unified-extensions-button" rel="external nofollow">Mozilla</a> notes the fact that Firefox Relay users must be signed in with their Firefox Account for this new feature to work.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">This release also adds two new locales, namely Friulian (fur) and Sardinian (sc), adds support for the rel attribute on form elements to specify the relationship between the form target and the current document in a much simpler and cross-browser way, and enables origin private file system (OPFS) access to allow Web Apps to store and retrieve data from and to the file system in a sandbox.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<span style="font-size:14px;">“The data in this file system is origin-specific: permission prompts are not required to access files, and clearing data for the site/origin deletes the storage. The OPFS is accessed with the StorageManager.getDirectory() method, by calling navigator.storage.getDirectory() in a worker or the main thread,” said Mozilla.</span>
	</div>

	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">For web developers, <a href="https://9to5linux.com/mozilla-firefox-110-is-now-available-for-download-heres-whats-new" rel="external nofollow">Firefox</a> 111 introduces support for the autocapitalize global attribute by default, support for the translate global attribute, and adds support for RTCInboundRtpStreamStats.trackIdentifier to allow devs to associate inbound-rtp statistics with a particular track when using the RTCPeerConnection.getStats() function.</span>
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">It also adds support for the color(), lab(), lch(), oklab(), and oklch() CSS color functions, which can be enabled via the layout.css.more_color_4.enabled preference, as well as support for the context-stroke and context-fill values inside &lt;marker&gt; elements.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">As mentioned before, Mozilla plans to officially released Firefox 111 and push it to OTA (Over-the-Air) updates on March 14th, 2023. If you can’t wait until then or you don’t care about OTA updates, you can download the binaries for 64-bit and 32-bit systems, as well as the source tarball, right now from the official download server <a href="https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/111.0/" rel="external nofollow">here</a>.</span>

	While <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://windows-11.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a> has some almighty features built into the operating system, there are some free tools from third parties that enhance the experience. You don’t have to settle for a bland screen with the default settings. You’ll also have some fun functions to play with.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To that end, here are some of the top free tools for <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/03/09/windows-11-file-explorer-is-getting-a-recommended-section/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a> that I feel you’ll enjoy. If there are any others you like, please feel free to let us know.
</p>

<h2>
	QuickLook
</h2>

<p>
	Are you quickly trying to find an image on Windows 11 in your File Explorer, but you’re tired of opening each one? I know the system has small thumbnails, but they don’t always reveal what’s in the file. <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://quicklook.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">QuickLook</a> is available if you want quick previews of files. If you want, you can also pin previews, but I don’t know why that would be important. At least the function is available if you need it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="quick-look-windows-11-scaled.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="412" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/quick-look-windows-11-scaled.jpg"></p><noscript><img class=" wp-image-188015 aligncenter" alt="quick-look-windows-11-scaled.jpg" width="895" height="513" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/quick-look-windows-11-scaled.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	7-Zip
</h2>

<p>
	Yes, Windows 11 already has a free tool for extracting zipped files, which is such a blessing. However, it’s limited in its functionality. If you want to do more, you can try <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://7-zip.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">7-Zip</a>. It lets you extract from a greater variety of formats, while you can also move files around within a compressed folder.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="7zip-windows-11-scaled.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="340" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/7zip-windows-11-scaled.jpg"></p><noscript><img class=" wp-image-188011 aligncenter" alt="7zip-windows-11-scaled.jpg" width="741" height="350" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/7zip-windows-11-scaled.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	NotePad++
</h2>

<p>
	The default Windows 11 NotePad is helpful when you need to make quick notes, but reading long lines can become frustrating. With <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://notepad-plus.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">NotePad++</a>, which is a free tool you can install at any time, you’ll have more advanced features to play with. It’s easier on the eyes, and you have proper icons at the top.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="notepad-plus-plus-windows-11-scaled.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="373" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/notepad-plus-plus-windows-11-scaled.jpg"></p><noscript><img class=" wp-image-188014 aligncenter" alt="notepad-plus-plus-windows-11-scaled.jpg" width="759" height="394" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/notepad-plus-plus-windows-11-scaled.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	ShareX
</h2>

<p>
	There are many easy ways to take a screenshot in Windows 11. Besides the standard Prt Scr button, you also have Windows + G for the game bar. You still need to locate the images or paste them into a program, though. With <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://sharex.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">ShareX</a>, you have a File Explorer window where you can quickly sort and edit your screenshots. What’s more, you can also make GIFs or record your screen with a video.
</p>

	<img alt="sharex-image.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="64.58" height="440" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/sharex-image.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="size-full wp-image-188016 aligncenter" alt="sharex-image.jpg" width="761" height="466" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/sharex-image.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Lively Wallpaper
</h2>

<p>
	This is honestly one of my favorite free tools for Windows 11, and I’m not just saying that for SEO purposes. I actually discovered this one recently and decided to try it out. <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://lively-wallpaper.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Lively Wallpaper</a> replaces bland, static images with animated ones. You can even move your mouse to interact with the background.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you install the <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://github.com/rocksdanister/lively/wiki/Screen-Saver" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Lively Screensaver tool</a> from <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://github-for-windows.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Github</a> that’s connected to Lively Wallpaper, you’ll have the same effects when your monitor goes to sleep.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="lively-wallpaper-windows-11.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="467" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/lively-wallpaper-windows-11.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="size-full wp-image-188013 aligncenter" alt="lively-wallpaper-windows-11.jpg" width="962" height="624" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/lively-wallpaper-windows-11.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Fluent Search
</h2>

<p>
	Tired of Windows 11 search and File Explorer not being able to find files, images, documents, or other items that you know for sure are on your desktop? <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://fluent-search.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Fluent Search</a> may be a better option. There’s little that it can’t find, even game files that are hidden within specific folders that you aren’t meant to be looking in. You can also quickly open and close it with the Ctrl+Alt combination.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Fluent-Search-scaled.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="464" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Fluent-Search-scaled.jpg"></p><noscript><img class=" wp-image-188018 aligncenter" alt="Fluent-Search-scaled.jpg" width="836" height="539" srcset="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Fluent-Search-scaled.jpg 1200w, https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Fluent-Search-1536x991.jpg 1536w, https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Fluent-Search-2048x1321.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 836px) 100vw, 836px" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Fluent-Search-scaled.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Google Drive Desktop
</h2>

<p>
	If you save files on Google Drive for later access or collaborating with colleagues, it can become tedious to upload documents to the cloud on your browser. Did you know that you get a <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://google-drive.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Google Drive app</a> for Windows 11? Once you install it, the link will appear in your File Explorer as a new section. From there, you can move and copy files back and forth as you wish while syncing with your account.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="google-drive-desktop.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="65.56" height="387" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/google-drive-desktop.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="size-full wp-image-188012 aligncenter" alt="google-drive-desktop.jpg" width="876" height="472" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/google-drive-desktop.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	BitWarden
</h2>

<p>
	It’s so easy for hackers to access your saved passwords on browsers and other places these days. Also, it can be challenging to keep track of user accounts and login details for each site. <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://bitwarden.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">BitWarden</a> helps you with that hassle. With encrypted storage, you’ll be able to see all of your accounts that you saved and even generate new passwords for them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

	<img alt="BitWarden-1-scaled.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="405" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/BitWarden-1-scaled.jpg"></p><noscript><img class=" wp-image-188020 aligncenter" alt="BitWarden-1-scaled.jpg" width="811" height="456" srcset="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/BitWarden-1-scaled.jpg 1200w, https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/BitWarden-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/BitWarden-1-2048x1152.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/BitWarden-1-scaled.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Steam
</h2>

<p>
	This last item is from this gamer to all my fellow gamers. If you haven’t tried it yet, <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://steam.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Steam</a> is free to download and install on Windows 11. Unlike <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://xbox-game-pass.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Xbox Games Pass</a>, you don’t need a membership to access thousands of titles. Sure, not all of the games are free, but there are plenty that are or at least have a free demo you can try.
</p>

	Tiny10 and Tiny11 are popular projects aiming to give users a lightweight Windows with a significantly reduced disk footprint and no unnecessary parts. The most recent releases include <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/tiny11/" rel="external nofollow">Tiny11 and Tiny11 for ARM</a>, and now users can download Tiny10 version 2303 based on the latest Windows 10 update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Tiny10 2303 is made primarily for those with old PCs that cannot properly run stock Windows 10, not to mention Windows 11. It is x86-only (based on Windows 10 LTSC 2021) and requires just a little more than 5GB of drive space. More importantly, version 2303 brings a few notable improvements and changes:

<ul>

		The release includes the component store, allowing you to update the operating system and add new features.

		Remote Desktop is included.
	</li>
	<li>
		Windows Defender is included, providing security essentials without third-party apps.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can download Tiny10 2303 <a href="https://archive.org/details/tiny-10_202301" rel="external nofollow">from the Internet Archive.</a> Note that the operating system <strong>is not activated</strong>, and you need a valid Windows 10 key (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/psa-you-can-still-activate-windows-11-using-windows-7-keys/" rel="external nofollow">it should still work with old Windows 7 and 8 keys</a>). Also, keep in mind the potential risks of using modified Windows images. The rule of thumb is simple: do not use it if you do not trust it. Alternatively, you can put the stock Windows on a diet and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-remove-get-started-tpm-and-cpu-requirements-from-windows-11-with-tiny11builder/" rel="external nofollow">DIY a lightweight ISO using a dedicated guide</a>.

This involves applying a highlight effect to the small mouse cursor, making it clearer for viewers to follow while watching any kind of Windows tutorial video or viewing the desktop during screen sharing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Most users who showcase their Windows desktops to others recognize the importance of highlighting their mouse pointers. Fortunately, there are various ways to highlight the mouse pointer using third-party apps and extensions. This article will demonstrate how to highlight the mouse cursor in Windows 11/10 using PowerToys, Mouse Pointer Highlight, and Cursor Highlight.
</p>

<h2>
	How to use Show Location of Pointer to highlight your cursor
</h2>

<p>
	If you need to highlight the cursor in Windows, you can choose the Show location of pointer setting. Even though Windows doesn't have many cursor-highlighting features, this setting allows you to briefly highlight the cursor's position with a ring simply by pressing an activation key. Although it's not as advanced as third-party apps that provide colour highlighting, it still effectively displays the cursor's location. To select the Show location of pointer setting, follow these steps:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li aria-level="1">
		Press Win + I to open the Settings app. (Alternatively, you can use other methods to open the Windows Settings app.)
	</li>
	<li aria-level="1">
		In Windows 11, select Bluetooth &amp; devices. If you're using Windows 10, select Devices.
	</li>

		Click on Mouse to view the settings for this device type.
	</li>
	<li aria-level="1">
		Look for Additional mouse settings (or Additional mouse options) in the Windows Settings app, and select it.
	</li>
	<li aria-level="1">

	<li aria-level="1">

	To test out the new pointer highlighting, press the Ctrl key and observe a circle expanding and quickly shrinking around the cursor. This feature is intended to help users locate their mouse pointers. However, it may be an unnecessary feature for that purpose since moving the mouse around is typically the most effective way to find the cursor.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That being said, this feature can be advantageous for Windows video tutorials. Enabling the circle animation will draw viewers' attention to the cursor's position. It can be used to briefly highlight settings by positioning the cursor next to any option that requires selecting.

<h2>
	Highlight your cursor with Mouse Pointer Highlight
</h2>

<p>
	If you desire a permanent colour highlight for the cursor, you can consider using the Mouse Pointer Highlight app. This freely available app adds a transparent colour circle to the cursor, providing a more visible and colourful highlighting effect. Here are the steps to highlight the cursor using Mouse Pointer Highlight:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li aria-level="1">
		Download and install the Mouse Pointer Highlight app on your Windows device.
	</li>
	<li aria-level="1">
		Once installed, launch the app.
	</li>
	<li aria-level="1">
		Choose the colour of the highlight you prefer by clicking on the coloured circle in the app's window.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Upon launching the Mouse Pointer Highlight app, a default yellow circle highlight will automatically appear around your cursor. To change the colour of the circle, click on "Select colour" and choose a different colour from the palette.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The size of the circle highlight defaults to 30, but you can adjust it to be smaller or larger by entering a value less than or greater than 30 in the "Size" box. Similarly, you can modify the circle's transparency by changing the value in the "Opacity" box. A lower value will increase transparency, while a value of 0 will make the circle invisible and a value of 255 will remove all transparency.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The app also features a click highlight effect that displays a second circle with a different colour briefly around the cursor whenever you click the mouse. You can enable this feature by selecting the "Enable" checkbox. The size, opacity, and display time of this secondary circle can be configured in the same manner as the primary circle.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Once you have configured the cursor highlighting to your preferences, click on the "Apply Setting" button. Note that the app must remain running for the cursor highlighting to work, but it does not run in the background with a system tray icon. You can minimize the app's window to the taskbar when not in use.
</p>

<h2>
	Use PowerToys to highlight your cursor
</h2>

<p>
	PowerToys is an app that provides access to several useful new tools and features for Windows 11/10. <p>

</p>

<h2>
	Make your cursor pop
</h2>

<p>
	Highlighting your cursor in Windows 11/10 can make it stand out and be more visible. The highlighting options available in PowerToys and Mouse Pointer Highlight apps are especially useful for presentations and tutorials. The Windows "show pointer" feature and the Cursor Highlighter extension also provide visual cursor indicators, though with slightly less functionality. Whichever option you choose to employ, you now have all the tools you could need to make your cursor pop.

	Device Manager is a handy tool in <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://windows-11.en.softonic.com/?ex=DINS-635.2" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a> if you need to check your hardware specifications or update drivers. Despite its importance to many users, there isn’t a shortcut on the taskbar or a quick-launch icon for it. That doesn’t mean it’s challenging to open and find.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you’re new to the operating system or looking for this option, here are the quick ways to open Device Manager in Windows 11. Check them all out to see which one is easiest for you to use.
</p>

<h2>
	Run Device Manager in Windows 11
</h2>

<p>
	Here’s one of the easiest ways to open Device Manager. In <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/category/windows/windows-11/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a>, simply press the Windows key and R together for the Run dialog to appear. When you enter devmgmt.msc and click on OK, you’ll see the DM appear on your screen.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="01-1.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="68.06" height="445" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/01-1.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-188006" alt="01-1.jpg" width="793" height="491" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/01-1.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Power User option
</h2>

<p>
	Another handy option is to access the Power User menu in <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/03/10/how-to-open-registry-editor-on-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a> to open Device Manager. All you do is press Windows and X together, and the menu appears on your screen like magic. You’ll notice that DM is one of the listed options.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Power-User-option.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="492" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Power-User-option.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-187996" alt="Power-User-option.jpg" width="1003" height="686" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Power-User-option.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Windows Search
</h2>

<p>
	Do you see the small Search section in your taskbar at the bottom of your Windows 11 screen? If you don’t, you can press Windows and S to open it. Either way, you enter Device Manager and wait for the name to appear. Just click on it, and you have access to all your hardware and drivers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Windows-Search.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="540" width="656" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Windows-Search.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-187997" alt="Windows-Search.jpg" width="963" height="792" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Windows-Search.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Computer Management tool
</h2>

<p>
	Using the Computer Management tool is another option that’s been around for many Windows systems in the past. Luckily, you can use it to open Device Manager in Windows 11. All you do is open your search again (Windows and S), type in Computer Management, and open it. You’ll see DM listed as one of the options in the left pane. Click on it to see all your system settings.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Computer-Management-tool.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="528" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Computer-Management-tool.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-187998" alt="Computer-Management-tool.jpg" width="963" height="707" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Computer-Management-tool.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	File Explorer
</h2>

<p>
	Using the File Explorer is a longer, laborious approach that I don’t like, but it may be your only option if the others don’t work so well. You can even make a shortcut to your desktop if you want. First, press Windows and E to open FE. From there, select the drive that Windows 11 is installed on.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, following these folders until you locate the Device Manager executable file: Drive // Windows // System32 // devmgmt.msc.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="File-Explorer.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="426" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/File-Explorer.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-187999" alt="File-Explorer.jpg" width="1000" height="592" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/File-Explorer.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Control Panel
</h2>

<p>
	Using the Control Panel is another round-about way of opening Device Manager in Windows 11. Using the search option again, enter Control Panel and open it. Click on Hardware and Sound, and then look for Device Manager under Devices and Printers. Not an elegant method, but one you can use, nevertheless.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Control-Panel.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="492" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Control-Panel.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-188000" alt="Control-Panel.jpg" width="959" height="656" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Control-Panel.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Command Line
</h2>

<p>
	Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell are two options if you prefer using command lines to find your system settings. They are more for advanced users, but you can easily find Device Manager this way. Using the search function and entering their names, you can open either of them. You’ll see a black screen appear waiting for you to enter a command. When you type devmgmt.msc and press enter, DM will open.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Command-Line.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="474" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Command-Line.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-188002" alt="Command-Line.jpg" width="938" height="618" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Command-Line.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	Task Manager
</h2>

<p>
	The Task Manager isn’t only for killing apps that don’t want to close properly. You can also start new apps that way. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete together and select Task Manager. Alternatively, you can use the Power User menu from before. Once in, you click on Run new task and enter devmgmt.msc. There you go: Device Manager is now open.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Task-Manager.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="540" width="555" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Task-Manager.jpg"></p><noscript><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-188003" alt="Task-Manager.jpg" width="881" height="857" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Task-Manager.jpg"></noscript>

<h2>
	System Settings
</h2>

<p>
	The final quick way to open Device Manager in Windows 11 is with the system settings. All you have to do is press Windows and I, and the system settings open. It’s almost like opening your inventory in a video game. Now, type Device Manager in the search section, and you’re on your way.

	While many users claim that <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://mozilla-firefox.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Firefox</a> is the best browser for customization, security, and speed, it does come with some problems. One of these is pushing the CPU so high that it affects the performance of <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://windows-11.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can quickly open your Task manager to see if the browser is the main culprit of high CPU Usage on Windows 11. If Firefox is the problem, here are some tips on what you can do. Thankfully, I don’t have these issues with <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://secure-browser.en.softonic.com/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Avast Secure Browser</a>.
</p>

<h2>
	Close any Unused Tabs
</h2>

<p>
	I know what it’s like to open multiple tabs in your browser. I usually have tab folders with sites minimized in each one, but that doesn’t always solve the problem. If you have many open in <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/02/14/firefox-110-is-out-here-is-what-is-new/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Firefox</a>, it’s going to cause massive CPU usage on <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/03/09/windows-11-file-explorer-is-getting-a-recommended-section/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Windows 11</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It’s even worse if any of them are streaming audio or video in the background or have several animated ads. Whichever ones you’re not checking out, close them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<h2>
	Update your Browser
</h2>

<p>
	When Firefox is outdated or obtains a glitch, it may affect your Windows 11 performance or CPU usage. You’ll usually notice this when you only have one tab open, but the browser is still using loads of system resources.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you open the main menu option and head down to Help, click on the About Firefox item. If there’s a new update, it will automatically be detected and start updating. Well, it should. You may need to search online if there’s one you missed.
</p>

<h2>
	Clear Cookies and Cache
</h2>

<p>
	Like most browsers, Firefox stores cookies and data in the cache so that web pages you’ve visited will open faster next time. The only issue is that this takes a strain on your Windows 11 CPU resources, especially if the data is corrupted. If none of the above techniques work, you may want to try clearing your cookies and cache.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Just head to the same main menu and click on Settings. From there, go to Privacy and Security and click on Clear Data. You can also choose what type of data you want to clear. When you restart Firefox, websites will initially be slow to open until sufficient data is stored again.
</p>

<h2>
	Disable Extensions you Don’t Use
</h2>

<p>
	I love browser extensions as much as the next Windows 11 user, but having too many of them can lead to increased CPU usage. Most people don’t know this, but they’re usually active for as long as Firefox remains open.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To get rid of a few Firefox extensions, head back into that main menu and go to Add-ons and Themes. Here, you can quickly see which ones are active and disable the ones you don’t really need. Feel free to even remove them altogether to see if that helps with performance.
</p>

<h2>
	Is Hardware Acceleration Enabled?
</h2>

<p>
	Here’s a little technical advice for those of you who have a powerful GPU that you’re not using efficiently to run Windows 11 and browsers. There’s a cool trick you can use to switch some functions from the CPU to your GPU, especially in Firefox. When you have Hardware Acceleration enabled, all the visual effects on your browser’s screen are powered by your GPU instead of your CPU. You should see improved performance after making this change.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To do so, head back into the Firefox main menu and click on Settings. By “More from Mozilla”, select the option to enable Hardware Acceleration.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<h2>
	How much do you love Firefox?
</h2>

<p>
	If none of the above options help you, then you have two options. You can either switch to a new browser and delete Firefox, or you can delete and reinstall it. Like I said, I don’t have any issues with Avast Secure Browser, and you can quickly transfer your bookmarks and saved data. But, I’m not here to sell you on what I love. It’s up to you what you want to do.
