In a blog post, Microsoft detailed the new features for the Snipping Tool app

With this update to Snipping Tool (version 11.2308.33.0), we are introducing Text Actions, which detects text in your captured screenshots, making it easy to copy text from any image to share with others or paste in another app. To get started, click the Text Actions button in the toolbar to show selectable text before selecting and copying text with your mouse. You can also click the Copy all text button in the toolbar or use Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C to select and copy all text using your keyboard.

There's another new feature that will come in handy for people who want to keep some info secure:

With Text Actions, you can also redact sensitive information in screenshots before sharing. Select Quick Redact from the toolbar to automatically hide emails and phone numbers or select any text and select Redact Text from the right-click menu to hide the text.

Sadly though, evidence suggests Windows 11 remains sluggish as tests indicate Windows 10 is generally snappier and the more responsive OS. However, things could be changing as Microsoft is seemingly getting serious about fixing File Explorer performance and issues.

But there is plenty of work that needs to be done and a Twitter user randomascii pointed out one of these UI-related quirks wherein the Action Center toast notification occupies more space than the actual notification itself. They noted that while the notification window was 686 units high, the visible height is much less at only 520.

Another Twitter user Albacore was intrigued by this and took up the challenge to fix the issue. Using WinDbg, a Windows debugging tool, they eliminated 58 units from the height of the toast notification.

Microsoft is not entirely sitting on its laurels though as the latest Canary build does upgrade how the lock screen network flyout looks in order to improve the UI consistency. Other improvements in the build include SMB NTLM blocking.

The announced changes list though also has some important improvements and fixes that many will likely appreciate. Microsoft seems to be making a conscious effort to improve the File Explorer performance in Windows 11.

Back in 2021, when Windows 11 was new, Microsoft acknowledged that there were problems and promised better performance in 2022. Again in 2022, Microsoft's Panos Panay reiterated the company's new OS was all about delivering the "highest quality". Earlier this year, the tech giant also expressed in detail the performance improvements it delivered over the last year.

The firm notes that it fixed a memory leak issue related to File Explorer Home which means load times should be quicker. The release notes say:

• We made some more improvements to help with the performance of loading Home. Also fixed a memory leak related to Home that would grow each time Home was refreshed or accessed.

The latest Dev build, among other File Explorer improvements, notes multiple upgrades related to performance as well as crash fixes:

• Fixed an issue where rapidly opening two File Explorer windows might make explorer.exe crash.

• Made a few more fixes to help improve File Explorer launch performance, including fixing a leak which would impact performance over time.

• Fixed an issue which could make explorer.exe crash when navigating away from Home.

• Fixed an issue where trying to open Gallery after new images had been added might result in a crash.

• Fixed an issue where the progress wheel in the tab would get stuck showing that File Explorer was loading a folder when the loading had actually already finished.

   

In case you are not aware, Microsoft has published a new redesigned File Explorer and it is based on WinAppSDK (WinUI). However, there are several reports suggesting it is rather sluggish in overall performance and responsiveness.

It has also been proven to be true when more in-depth tests were conducted vs. Windows 10. Funnily, users recently discovered a full-screen (F11) bug recently which ironically boosted the performance.

The new vertical layout for Split Screen was recently spotted in the Canary Channel. With the updated Split Screen feature, Microsoft Edge allows displaying webpages side-by-side or stacked. In addition, users can switch between layouts on the go by clicking a three-dot button.

The Document Foundation announced today the general availability of LibreOffice 7.6.1 as the first point release to the latest LibreOffice 7.6 open-source and free office suite series.

LibreOffice 7.6.1 is here only three weeks after the release of LibreOffice 7.6 but it looks like it’s a hefty update that brings more than 120 changes.

According to the RC1 and RC2 changelogs, this update includes a total of 122 fixes and it’s highly recommended to all LibreOffice 7.6 users.

You can download LibreOffice 7.6.1 binaries for DEB or RPM-based GNU/Linux distributions right from the official website. These binary installers are packaged by The Document Foundation, and you will also find the source tarball available for download if you’re a system integrator.

If you have LibreOffice 7.6 installed from the software repositories of your GNU/Linux distribution, keep an eye on the LibreOffice 7.6.1 version and update your installations as soon as possible.

LibreOffice 7.6 introduces new features like support for zoom gestures on touchpads, support for document themes, the ability to import and export theme definitions for ODF and OOXML documents, as well as many improvements to font handling, especially for right-to-left scripts, CJK, and Asian alphabets.

LibreOffice 7.6 will be supported with a total of seven maintenance updates until June 12th, 2024. The next one, LibreOffice 7.6.2, is currently scheduled for early or mid-October 2023, and will most likely fix more of those pesky bugs and annoyances so you can enjoy an even better LibreOffice office suite experience.

Once again, The Document Foundation reminds us all that this is the “Community” edition of LibreOffice, supported by volunteers. For enterprise-class deployments, The Document Foundation recommends the LibreOffice Enterprise family of applications from ecosystem partners.

I've been using LibreOffice for a very, very long time. The reasons are numerous: it's open source, it works exactly how I want it to, and it's very easy to customize. One of the many customizations I take advantage of is the ability to define what style comes next.

Given that I'm an author of fiction, I tend to use just a bare minimum of styles (those which my publisher requires). In fact, there are only two styles I have to use: Heading 2, and Default Paragraph Style. I've even customized those styles to look exactly as I need them. Beyond the look of the styles, there's another option that I use, which defines which style comes next. 

In other words, each chapter begins with a heading that uses the Heading 2 style. When I hit return after using that style, I need the next to be Default Paragraph Style (which I've also customized for a specific indent and justified alignment). 

I don't want to have to always select every style I use when writing a manuscript because my attention needs to be on the words, not the layout. If I had to continually select or adjust the styles, it would not only take me more time, but it would also knock me out of my flow. When I'm tearing through a story, I need as few distractions as possible.

And that's why I define the next style. Let me show you how.

How to define the next style in LibreOffice

What you'll need: The only thing you'll need is a running instance of LibreOffice. You can download and install LibreOffice for free on Linux, macOS, and Windows. I'll demonstrate on version 7.6, running on Ubuntu Budgie, but the process of defining the next style is the same, regardless of what platform you use.

With LibreOffice ready, let's define our next style.

1. Open LibreOffice Writer

This feature works within the LibreOffice Writer tool (which is the tool used to create word documents). If you're using Linux, you can open Writer directly from your desktop menu. 

If you're using MacOS or Windows, you'll need to open the main LibreOffice tool and either create a new document or open a previously saved one.

2. Open the Style Editor

Before you open the Style Editor, make sure to select the style you want to edit. In my case, I would open the Heading 2 style, because I want to define Default Paragraph Style as the next style to be used. 

Once you've selected the style you need to edit, click the Styles menu, and then click Edit Style. You can also use the keyboard shortcut of Alt-P (or Option-P on MacOS) to open the Style Editor.

3. Change the next style

Click on the Organizer tab and you should see the Next style dropdown. Click that dropdown and select the style you want to be used after the current style. 

In my case, I would edit Heading 2 and select Default Paragraph Style for the Next style. Once you've done that, click OK and you're done.

Now, when I hit Enter on my keyboard, after using the Heading 2 style, Default Paragraph Style (which I have edited to fit my needs) will automatically be the next style.

This trick is a great way to make LibreOffice Writer a bit more efficient, so you're not taken out of your flow when the words are pouring out of you like questions from a curious child.

Ubuntu 23.04’s new installer is written in Google’s Flutter SDK and it’s based on Ubuntu’s Subiquity server installer, which, unfortunately, does not have ZFS support yet. Those who wanted to install Ubuntu 23.04 on an encrypted ZFS root would have to use the Legacy ISO images.

But the good news is that the upcoming Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur) release, due out on October 12th, 2023, will bring back ZFS support in the main ISO image that uses the new Flutter-based installer.

However, ZFS will be offered as an experimental feature. Users will be able to enable ZFS on root from the same place they accessed the feature in previous Ubuntu releases, namely by clicking on the “Advanced features” button when choosing the type of installation they want to perform.

I do hope that that ZFS on root will work as expected for those who want their Ubuntu installations with a ZFS file system, but for now the feature does not appear to work on my machine using the latest daily build ISO image. Most probably, ZFS support will be functional in the final release.

For now, Ubuntu 23.10 is powered by Linux kernel 6.3, so ZFS installation should work. However, OpenZFS does not yet support the latest Linux 6.5 kernel series, which Canonical plans to add by default in the final Mantic Minotaur release. Hopefully, OpenZFS will support Linux kernel 6.5 by then.

Ubuntu 23.10 is one of the most anticipated Ubuntu releases in a long time as it will come with the latest GNOME 45 desktop environment and Linux 6.5 kernel series by default. Another interesting feature of Ubuntu 23.10 is the ability to unlock your encrypted installation without typing a passphrase on TPM 2.0-capable hardware.

The beta release of Ubuntu 23.10 will be available for public testing on September 21st, 2023.

During the macOS 14 Sonoma beta period Apple introduced a bug in the macOS firewall, packet filter (PF). This bug prevents our app from working, and can result in leaks when some settings (e.g. local network sharing) are enabled. We cannot guarantee functionality or security for users on macOS 14, we have investigated this issue after the 6th beta was released and reported the bug to Apple. Unfortunately the bug is still present in later macOS 14 betas and the release candidate.

We have evaluated whether we can patch our VPN app in such a way that it works and keeps users secure in macOS 14. But unfortunately there is no good solution, as far as we can tell. We believe the firewall bugs must be fixed by Apple.

The bug affects much more than just the Mullvad VPN app. Firewall rules do not get applied properly to network traffic, and traffic that is not supposed to be allowed is allowed. We deem this to be a critical flaw in the firewall, anyone relying on PF filtering, or apps using it in the background on their macOS devices should be cautious about upgrading to macOS 14.

Our recommendations

MacOS 14 Sonoma is scheduled to be released on the 26th of September, if the bug is still present we recommend our users to remain on macOS 13 Ventura until it is fixed.

Technical details

The following steps can be taken on macOS 14 to reproduce the issue. Warning: This will clear out any firewall rules you might have loaded in PF.

In a terminal, create a virtual logging interface and start watching it for traffic matching the rules you will add later:

sudo ifconfig pflog1 create
sudo tcpdump -nnn -e -ttt -i pflog1

Write the following firewall rules to a file named pfrules:

pass quick log (all, to pflog1) inet from any to 127.0.0.1
block drop quick log (all, to pflog1)

In another terminal, enable PF and load the rules:

sudo pfctl -e
sudo pfctl -f pfrules

Ping the mullvad.net webserver:

ping 45.83.223.209

Expected results

• Ping is blocked, since it does not match the only pass rule’s requirements

• The traffic is logged to pflog1. More specifically we expect it to be logged as matching the block rule

Actual results

• Ping is allowed out on the internet, and the response comes back
• No traffic is being logged to pflog1

Cleaning up after the experiment

Disable the firewall and clear all rules.

sudo pfctl -d
sudo pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf

What’s new in Build 25951

SMB NTLM Blocking

Starting with this build (Build 25951), the SMB client now supports blocking NTLM for remote outbound connections. This changes legacy behavior, where Windows SPNEGO would negotiate Kerberos, NTLM, and other mechanisms with the destination server to decide on a supported security package. NTLM in this case refers to all versions of the LAN Manager security package: LM, NTLM, and NTLMv2.

With this new option, an administrator can intentionally block Windows from offering NTLM via SMB. An attacker who tricks a user or application into sending NTLM challenge responses to a malicious server will no longer receive any NTLM data and cannot brute force, crack, or pass a password, as they will never be sent over the network. This adds a new level of protection for enterprises without a requirement to entirely disable NTLM usage in the OS. You can configure this option with Group Policy and PowerShell. You can also block the use of NTLM in SMB connections on demand with NET USE and PowerShell.

SMB Dialect Management

Starting with this build (Build 25951), the SMB server now supports controlling which SMB 2 and 3 dialects it will negotiate. This changes legacy behavior, where Windows SMB always negotiated the highest matched server dialect from SMB 2.0.2 to 3.1.1 clients. Beginning in Windows 10, support was added for controlling SMB client dialects, but not server dialects.

With this new option, an administrator can remove older SMB protocols from usage in the organization, blocking older, less secure, and less capable Windows devices and third parties from connecting.

You can configure this option with Group Policy and PowerShell. Both SMB client and server now include complete management support (previously the client support was only manual registry editing).

In some cases, clicking on the gleam will take you to a Bing.com page for the search highlight. A tooltip will always be shown for the search highlight gleam when hovering over the search box. As a reminder, we regularly try out different concepts and get feedback with Insiders in the Dev Channel.

• We’re beginning to roll out the ability to quickly give your device a more friendly name to identify sharing to and from with nearby share under Settings > System > Nearby sharing.

Known issues

[Start menu]

[Windows Copilot]

• We heard feedback from Insiders in the Dev Channel that the Windows Copilot Preview is not available in some regions. We found an issue and plan to re-enable it for these Insiders with a fix in a future flight.

• You can use Alt + Tab to switch out of Windows Copilot, but not back into it. Windows + C will move focus back to Windows Copilot

• When first launching or after refreshing Copilot while using voice access you’ll need to use “Show grid” commands to click in the “Ask me anything” box for the first time.

You can use PowerToys Run to launch apps, find files, perform calculations, browse the web, navigate the registry, and many more. It is a great utility and a must-have replacement for Windows 11's built-in and lackluster search. The default invoke shortcut is Alt + Spacebar, but you can reassign it to any other available key combination.

With the upcoming update, PowerToys Run will offer better looks with an acrylic backdrop, reworked plugin icons, and improved fonts. Also, the launcher will provide an overview of all active plugins when the search box is empty.

There is no information on when Microsoft plans to release the redesigned PowerToys Run launcher. However, the wait should not take too long. You can find more information about the update on GitHub.

PowerToys is available for free from its official GitHub repository. You can also get the app from the Microsoft Store or using winget on compatible Windows 10 and 11 versions.

Today, Meta has announced that WhatsApp will begin rolling out the Channels feature across the world over the next few weeks, starting with India, which follows a limited launch in Colombia and Singapore in June this year which expanded to more countries in July. The feature, which will exist on a separate tab and is designed to be a broadcast channel for businesses or pages that can share updates with many users.

The initial launch of Channels only allows for users who are subscribed to channels to just view the posts, however, this wider rollout now adds a few new features such as emoji reactions similar to within chat, as well as sorting and filtering available channels based on country. Admins also get new features like updating posts within a 30 day window, before the post is deleted from WhatsApp's servers.

Presently, Meta reports that there are now "thousands" of channels on the platform, but users are currently unable to create their own. Meta has stated that it will be opening up access to channel creation to everyone in the future but has yet to specify an exact launch date. Channels is a key area of development for Meta with reported updates to formatting coming which should further boost the viability of the platform as a communication route for businesses and pages.

With recent updates to the WhatsApp beta getting ready to add support for third-party chat clients outside of WhatsApp directly, this may also expand to the ability to send messages to WhatsApp users using Channels from other apps, which can schedule posts or have more complex business tools for managing social media pages. Additionally, with multi-account support being integrated into WhatsApp allows for users who run businesses or pages to switch between a personal or business profile on the same device.

Believe it or not, the Linux 6.4 kernel series is now marked as EOL (End of Life) on the kernel.org website, which means that it will no longer receive updates and will soon become obsolete.

Renowned Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman announced today the release of Linux 6.4.16 as what appears to be the last maintenance update in the Linux 6.4 kernel series, which was released on June 25th, 2023.

Linux kernel 6.4.16 is a hefty update that comes with no less than 873 changed files, consisting of 10654 insertions and 7653 deletions. All users using Linux 6.4 are recommended to update their installations to this version as soon as it hits the stable software repositories of their distributions.

However, this being the last update in the series, Greg Kroah-Hartman recommends all GNU/Linux distributions and users to upgrade to the latest Linux 6.5 kernel series as soon as possible.

“I’m announcing the release of the 6.4.16 kernel. NOTE, this is the LAST 6.4.y release, this branch is now end-of-life. All users must move to the 6.5.y branch at this point in time,” said Greg Kroah-Hartman.

Popular rolling-release distros like Arch Linux and openSUSE Tumbleweed are already powered by Linux kernel 6.5, and the new kernel series is also coming to other popular distros this fall, including Fedora Linux and Ubuntu.

Also today, Greg Kroah-Hartman announced a new update to the Linux 6.5 kernel series, namely Linux 6.5.3, which comes with a lot of changes too and it’s recommended to everyone using Linux kernel 6.5.

If you can’t wait for Linux 6.5 to arrive in your distro’s repositories or you want to compile it yourself, you can download the latest release right now from the kernel.org website.

With Linux kernel 6.4 reaching end of life, your best chance to stay up to date is to either upgrade to the latest stable kernel version or switch to one of the several long-term supported (LTS) branches, which include Linux 6.1, Linux 5.15, Linux 5.10, Linux 5.4, Linux 4.19, and Linux 4.14.

Content acquired includes:

• Setup Updates: Fixes to Setup binaries or any files that Setup uses for feature updates.

• Safe OS Updates: Fixes for the "safe OS" that are used to update Windows recovery environment (WinRE).

• Servicing Stack Updates: Fixes that are necessary to address the Windows 10 servicing stack issue and thus required to complete the feature update.

• Latest Cumulative Update: Installs the latest cumulative quality update.

• Driver Updates: Latest version of applicable drivers that have already been published by manufacturers into Windows Update and specifically targeted for Dynamic Update.

In addition to these updates, Dynamic Update will preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. These are not updates to LPs and FODs, but reacquisition to ensure the user has these elements present with the update completes.

Back in May of 2022, Microsoft began testing a new, redesigned, and revamped Outlook where the idea was to unify the app across all platforms, which is why it was often referred to as "One Outlook". The name of this project was named "Monarch".

And by April of this year, Microsoft began rolling out the preview to the Current channel users as well. The "Try the New Outlook for Windows" toggle was still present which meant users still had the choice of whether they wanted to move to the revamped Outlook or if they wanted to continue using the Windows 32-bit version.

With the latest Beta channel Windows 11 build, however, Microsoft has now begun pushing the New Outlook to Windows Insiders as well. Twitter user and Windows enthusiast PhantomOcean3 noticed that their Beta channel build 22631.2338 (KB5030305) automatically installed the new Outlook after a reboot:

A poll was also conducted on Twitter by the same user and although very few people voted in this (only 26 at the time of writing), it looks like some of them, around ~15.5% also received the new Outlook client.

In response to this, Brandon LeBlanc, the Senior Program Manager of the Windows Insider Program, confirmed that this was expected on, at least, some systems which means Microsoft might be testing the feature for an automatic installation with the Windows 11 23H2 feature update, though it will likely be a gradual rollout. This follows a recent report that suggested Microsoft 365 users would be automatically migrated to the new client starting August 2023.

Microsoft has already confirmed that Windows 11 version 23H2 is arriving in Q4 of this year, and since the end of support for 21H2 is close to that, the company has said it will force-update PCs with the latter to Windows 11 22H2, though chances of that being 23H2 are also there.

However, this could also mean that the company is testing the new Outlook for Windows 11 23H2 in general as it does aim to eventually replace the classic Outlook in about a year's time.

Popular hardware monitoring tool AIDA64 is keeping up nicely with the changes as the latest version of the software has received support for PCIe 6.0 controllers and devices even though PCIe 6.0 graphics cards or NVMe SSDs are still not around, and it will likely be a while for that too.

Aside from PCIe Gen6 support, the new version has also received support for Zen 5 or Ryzen 8000 series which is landing next year in 2024. The release notes show "improved" support though it is unclear what this means.

There are AVX-512-related improvements as well, along with support for the new AMD RX 7800 XT, 7700 XT, and also the RX 7900 GRE and Nvidia 4060 Ti 16GB variant. The full changelog for AIDA64 6.92.6600 is given below:

According to the page, the app will still show the translation feature, but it will generate an error message if you attempt to use it. Microsoft did not offer an explanation for this decision.

The support page added:

You will continue to be able to use all your notebooks using OneNote for Windows 10 and there will be no loss of your data. You simply will no longer be able to translate a page or selection of text. If you wish to continue translating content in your notebooks, you can use the OneNote app instead of OneNote for Windows 10.

It looks like Microsoft might be trying to get OneNote users on Windows 10 to make the shift to the standard OneNote app for Windows. So far, the company has not announced plans to completely retire the OneNote Windows 10 app, but it's possible that decision is coming in the not-too-distant future.

Microsoft is already planning on replacing the Mail and Calendar apps made for Windows 10 with the new Outlook app that's currently in a public preview. Microsoft says that the transition to the new Outlook should be complete by the end of 2024.

The company is also working on a new version of its Microsoft Teams online collaboration app. The new version, also known as Teams 2.0, is supposed to perform and launch much faster than the current Teams for Windows app.

Microsoft has also been testing the new Teams app in a public preview for several months. Microsoft could make it generally available sometime in October 2023.

Still, the company sometimes forgets about simple stuff that does not require artificial intelligence. For example, Windows 11 still cannot automatically toggle between dark and light modes. • The battery detection mechanism has once again been changed, it will now use the power supply status as its source.
• The wording for the UI setting relatd to "Accent color for title bars and window borders" was changed.
• Debug logs will be enabled when the beta branch is selected.
• The internal component structure was revamped, all theme switch arguments are now consolidated in a single EventArg class.
• The BaseComponent class has been extended and now includes a callback method.
• The App will now force the same locale as the service on every startup. This should prevent desynchronizations
• Language for the App now only changes when the restart button is pressed for consistency with the service behavior.
• GPU monitoring postpones can now be cleared from the ADM app if desired.
• The color filter activation setting has been moved to the Apps page.
