	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/powertoys-081-is-out-with-ai-powered-advanced-paste/" rel="external nofollow">A recent PowerToys</a> update brought a new AI-powered feature for Windows 10 and 11 users, but more things are coming soon. PowerToy's GitHub repository revealed a new Date and Time plugin that may be coming to the set of advanced Windows utilities. The idea is to give Windows users more control over the system calendar.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The proposed module may not sound very fancy compared to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/powertoys-0811-is-out-with-fixes-for-the-new-advanced-paste-ai-feature/" rel="external nofollow">the latest PowerToys improvements</a>. Still, it will be a great addition for Windows users who want to customize calendar settings, namely the first week rule and the first day of week rule. In other words, PowerToys will let you select which week qualifies as the first of the year (the first day, the first full week, or the first four-day week) and which day of the week is the first one.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is a scenario in which the new Date and Time module will come in handy:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		My current culture (for Windows) is set to en-US, but I live and work in the Netherlands.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In the Netherlands the FirstDayOfWeek is Monday (I can change this in my regional settings and will be picked up by the plugin)
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		But the CalenderWeekRule in the Netherlands is FirstFourDayWeek (unlike en-US where it is FirstDay), and I have no way to alter this in my regional settings.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		So now on my system when asking for the current week number I get a "wrong" (according to Dutch rules) week number.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	You can track the process of the Date and Time module development <a href="https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/pull/33406" rel="external nofollow">on GitHub</a>. Note that it might take a while before the new utility arrives in a new PowerToys update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	PowerToys is available for free <a href="https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/XP89DCGQ3K6VLD?ocid=pdpshare" rel="external nofollow">in the Microsoft Store</a> on Windows 10 and 11. You can also get it from GitHub or winget using the "winget install powertoys" command.

	Adobe is adding an image generation feature to its popular Adobe Acrobat app for opening and editing PDF files. In an email press release, the company revealed that starting later this week, Adobe Acrobat will support the generation and editing of images created by AI, specifically via Adobe’s Firefly Image 3 model.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The app will add the new Generate Image function this week, which will allow users to have control over AI-made images in PDF files. The feature will also let users adjust both the style and size of an AI-made image so they can fit in a PDF document.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, the new Edit Image feature will let users access the Generative Fill, Remove Background, Erase, and Crop functions in the Firefly model. Users can edit images in PDF files so they can remove unneeded objects, or get rid of backgrounds and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition to the new AI-based image features, more functions are being added to Acrobat AI Assistant. One of them will allow users to find specific themes and trends from a number of different documents and sources. Users can drag all that content into Acrobat AI Assistant, which can then format that information. The new feature will include adding citations so people can know where the information in the document comes from. Users will also be able to go to a specific source for more information.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Adobe AI Assistant is also adding a way to generate summaries of meetings. The feature will offer fast access to a meeting's main topics and action items.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Earlier this year, Adobe added more AI-based features to some of its other software products. They included <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/adobe-announces-new-version-of-photoshop-with-more-advanced-ai-based-image-creation-models/" rel="external nofollow">a new version of Photoshop</a> with more advanced AI image generation functions, A few weeks ago, the Adobe Lightroom app added the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/adobe-lightroom-gets-generative-remove-and-lens-blur/" rel="external nofollow">general availability of Lens Blur</a>, along with early access to Generative Remove.

<p>
	<span>For those not familiar, new Debian versions come out every two years and receive normal security updates for three years. They are then shifted to the long-term support branch, where they are supported by another team for a further two years. That’s the phase that’s ending now for Debian 10.</span>

The LTS Team will take over support from the Security and the Release Teams on August 14, 2024, three years after the initial release on August 14, 2021. <span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Apparently it is what Linux fanboys always wanted</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After mocking Windows Blue Screens of Death for decades, it seems that Linux fanboys actually wanted one—and now Linux 6.10 will finally bring them one.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For all the mock, the Blue Screen of Death did have its uses for Linux especially when building a kernel without VT/FBCON support where viewing the kernel panic message was not easily available
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After being talked about for years of DRM panic handling and coming with a "Blue Screen of Death" solution for DRM/KMS drivers, Linux 6.10 is introducing a new DRM panic handler infrastructure for being able to display a message when a panic occurs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Phoronix, the initial DRM Panic code has landed, as has wiring up the DRM/KMS driver support for the SimpleDRM, MGAG200, IMX, and AST drivers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Work is underway on extending DRM Panic support to other drivers, which will appear over coming kernel cycles for more widespread support.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those curious about what DRM Panic can look like in action, Red Hat engineer Javier Martinez Canillas shared a photo of the DRM Panic "Blue Screen of Death". A BeaglePlay single-board computer was used, and Javier posted to Mastodon an example implementation.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's simple and to the point. In the future, some operating systems could extend it by using QR codes for kernel error messages and other efforts to present more technical information while still being user-friendly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On Linux 6.10+ platforms with the DRM Panic driver support, this "Blue Screen of Death" functionality can be tested via a route such as echo c &gt; /proc/sysrq-trigger.
</p>

	Microsoft is not having a good time with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11s-ai-explorer-debuts-as-recall-a-feature-that-remembers-everything-you-do/" rel="external nofollow">its flagship AI feature</a> that was supposed to propel the launch of Copilot+ PCs on June 18 but ended up going down in flames after security experts and customers raised their privacy concerns. Microsoft tried to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-gives-in-makes-recall-an-opt-in-feature-and-introduces-new-privacy-measures/" rel="external nofollow">damage-control the situation</a> with a few security improvements but ultimately decided to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-delays-the-launch-of-recall-for-copilot-pcs-theres-no-word-on-a-new-date/" rel="external nofollow">postpone the release</a> and start with Windows Insiders first.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, while Apple <a href="https://x.com/LeakerApple/status/1801803992932171928" rel="external nofollow">is openly mocking Microsoft</a> for its misfired launch, the software giant is making improvements for Recall.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Albacore (@thebookisclosed on X) <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/despite-controversy-recall-adds-new-screenray-feature-which-analyzes-current-desktop-contents" rel="external nofollow">discovered</a> several Recall improvements in the latest Windows 11 Canary build, 26236.5000. For starters, pressing Win + Shift + D launches a new Screenray utility that lets you quickly analyze what is on the screen and get translations, extra insights from Copilot, and more.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Recall's home page received a redesign, with the biggest change being a new Topic section with snapshots arranged in a grid-style list. Now, Windows 11 opens a new home page instead of creating a new snapshot when you open Recall, which was a bit counter-intuitive. However, there is still a button to create a new snapshot right here, right now.

	Each analyzed snapshot gets its tag, which you can then find in the Topics section. You will also be able to assign custom tags to your snapshot collections and filter search results by apps.

	<em>Image source: Tom's Hardware</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another addition to Recall is a better integration of Copilot, which was rather strangely missing in the initial version. Clicking anything on a snapshot will bring a menu with various features, such as describing an image, finding similar pictures, creating similar pictures, copying, and launching other apps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Image source: Tom's Hardware</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For now, all that Recall stuff is hidden inside Windows 11 preview builds. Microsoft plans to give Insiders access to Recall in the near future, but you will be required to own a Copilot+ PC. Those with older ARM64 will have to use <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/unofficial-app-lets-you-install-controversial-windows-recall-on-unsupported-intel-amd-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">third-party hacks</a> to get the feature working.

	Towards the end of last month, Microsoft <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-24h2-build-26100712-is-now-available-for-insiders-in-the-release-preview-channel/" rel="external nofollow">released Windows 11 version 24H2</a> to Insiders on the Windows 11 Release Preview channel. A day later, the company announced that it was commencing Windows 11 24H2 <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-starts-ensuring-windows-11-24h2-system-requirements-compatibility-server-2025-too/" rel="external nofollow">compatible hardware and device certification</a>.

	The <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft 365 Roadmap website</a> was busy, as usual, in the past week, adding new and upcoming features for the company's productivity apps. Here's what was included on the site in the past seven days.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you use the OneDrive cloud storage server and access files on your web browser, you should see a <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=395379" rel="external nofollow">better search experience later in June</a>:

We've also visually updated the interface with more metadata, ensuring you effortlessly identify the right files every time.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	If you use your Outlook email client on your Mac, you should soon be able to access <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=395788" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant</a>. Starting in July, Outlook Mac users can access Copilot via the left app bar.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Users of Microsoft Teams on the desktop and Mac will be getting some new features during the month of July. One of them <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=399783" rel="external nofollow">concerns the Teams discovery feed</a>:

<p>
	Another additional function concerns searching<a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=398955" rel="external nofollow"> for answers in Teams messages</a>:

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		You will now see message result suggestions when formulating a query. You can also narrow down search results to "messages" helping you quickly find Teams message content most relevant for you.

<p>
	Microsoft will also add a way for desktop and Mac Teams users<a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=399782" rel="external nofollow"> to turn notifications for a post in a channel on or off</a> in July.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Word users for the desktop, Mac and on the web <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=399413" rel="external nofollow">will get some Copilot summary improvements</a> later in June:

	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft will also add a Word feature for <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=399785" rel="external nofollow">Mac</a>, <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=399925" rel="external nofollow">Desktop</a>, <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=319970" rel="external nofollow">the web</a>, and <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=399784" rel="external nofollow">iOS</a> versions in June that will let users "reference PDF files for Copilot to work with while generating content in Word."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That's all for this week's look back at the Microsoft 365 Roadmap. We will be back next Sunday to see what new entries have been added to the roadmap website.

	Shared folder, a major feature in Microsoft OneDrive, is seemingly bugged at the moment according to several user reports online. We were informed about this issue by a Neowin reader. The folders that are added using the "Add shortcut to My files" <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-and-sync-shared-folders-to-onedrive-for-home-8a63cd47-1526-4cd8-bd09-ee3f9bfc1504" rel="external nofollow">option</a> seem to have been replaced by internet shortcuts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The problem appears to have been first reported by <a href="https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/folders-shared-with-me-are-syncing-as-internet/6abc9383-6072-4562-b4fa-370c4ea8ce49" rel="external nofollow">PradeepSG</a> on the Microsoft forum. They wrote:

Yesterday night the shared folders were completely removed from the Windows pc and folders are replaced with internet shortcut. .<span style="font-size:16px">... This query has been upvoted by 240 others at the time of writing indicating that the problem is quite widespread. Here is another one of such posts published by a user <a href="https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/issue-with-onedrive-desktop-app-shared-folders/ebc649e0-2c90-44a6-9b56-c9205d5e0092" rel="external nofollow">נדב שביט</a> which has also been upvoted by 50 others at the time of writing.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		I have my One Drive account for several years. I have my main account signed in on my laptop. I have 4 other users sharing their folder with edit access to my main account. I add them as short cut to my main account. In the past, on my laptop, they function as folders. Meaning, I can move, delete, add files and they essentially function as a folder. Now, all my shared folder from my other users suddenly becomes short cut. When I open the folder, it brings me to the browser for me to sign in and view them.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Edit Update: I am able to fix this by logging into One Drive with my other user account. Seems like not all accounts are affected only some. I know its not a fixed but at least a temporary solution.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Hence, it seems whatever the bug is, it does not affect all accounts the same way as the user was able to sign in via a different account to access shared folders. This is also evident from some of the responses to these threads.

	When certain background tasks lead to high CPU usage on a PC, it typically means that the workload is buggy which is what leads to its misbehaviour, and often times certain Windows processes or services can be the culprit too.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This month, Windows users and insiders have been noticing something off on their systems and digging into the issue with the help of handy ol' Task Manager has revealed that Microsoft Cross Device Service is the potential culprit that is exhibiting high CPU usage.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These reports were not few and far between though as multiple users have confirmed the issue. Here's a thread on the Microsoft forum started by user <a href="https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/cross-device-service-high-cpu-usage/4544e1da-16c4-4fff-993a-754607aad569" rel="external nofollow">leginmat90</a> which has been upvoted by 46 others at the time of writing. Here's another one on the Windows Eleven <a href="https://www.elevenforum.com/t/cross-device-experience-host.25760/" rel="external nofollow">forum</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The issue has also been reported to Feedback Hub by a user and at the time of writing, it has been 160 others:

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		Cross Device Service is suddenly using an unexpected amount of CPU in the latest Windows 11 Insider builds (starting early June 2024)
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft engineer Jennifer G has responded to this issue confirming it and <a href="https://aka.ms/AAqrfzf" rel="external nofollow">has</a> added that the company is looking into the resolution:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Appreciate your patience, we've identified the cause and are working on a fix
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The response was posted a week ago though we are yet to receive the fix.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Cross Device Service, as the name suggests, is what helps a Windows PC connect to, synchronize, and share files with devices like phones and essentially helps power Phone Link in Windows. The recent Windows 11 Beta Insider builds are testing features related to better Phone Link support, and it's possible that the bug slipped through.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The most recent one brings <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5039319-microsoft-brings-new-windows-11-start-menu-jump-lists-better-android-sharing/" rel="external nofollow">improved Android file sharing</a> and another one from back in February updated the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-windows-11-insider-beta-build-226353209-kb5034855-adds-android-image-transfer-feature/" rel="external nofollow">Cross Device Experience Host</a> which replaced remote capture.

	A few weeks ago, <a href="https://neow.in/NGQzdmUx" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft quietly halted the rollout</a> of Windows 11 version 24H2 to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel. The company never explained what the cause of that mysterious pause was, but it promised to resume the rollout in a few weeks. The good news is that Windows 11 version 24H2 is once again available for download.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 11 build 26100.863 is a rare Saturday build for Windows Insiders. The update does not have a traditional change log, and the only official word about the release is the following update in the blog post <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-24h2-build-26100712-is-now-available-for-insiders-in-the-release-preview-channel/" rel="external nofollow">from May 22, 2024</a>:

<p>
	You can update your system to Windows 11 version 24H2 by enlisting your device in the Windows Insider Program in Settings &gt; Windows Update. Public release in the Stable Channel is expected later this year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This week is a busy one for Windows Insiders. Microsoft released plenty of preview builds, giving users in every channel something to try. The Canary Channel received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-insider-canary-channel-build-26236-adds-the-new-account-manager-to-the-start-menu/" rel="external nofollow">build 26236</a> with the new account manager (the same build number <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-server-2025-insider-preview-build-26236-fixes-a-previously-known-issue/" rel="external nofollow">is available for Windows Server 2025 testers</a>); the Dev Channel received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-insider-dev-channel-build-26120961-kb5038575-is-yet-another-minor-update/" rel="external nofollow">build 2610.961</a> with unknown improvements under the hood; the Beta Channel received <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5039319-microsoft-brings-new-windows-11-start-menu-jump-lists-better-android-sharing/" rel="external nofollow">build 22635.3785</a> with Start menu updates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides updating Windows 11 preview builds, Microsoft shipped new Insider updates for Windows 10. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-debuts-new-windows-10-beta-channel-that-allows-windows-11-upgrade-on-supported-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">The now-resurrected Beta Channel for Windows 10</a> currently offers <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5039299-windows-10-gets-improved-windows-backup-with-printer-settings-saving-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">build 19045.4593</a> with the Windows Backup app improvements and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another important announcement Microsoft made this week is <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-delays-the-launch-of-recall-for-copilot-pcs-theres-no-word-on-a-new-date/" rel="external nofollow">about Recall</a>, its controversial AI-powered feature for Windows 11 version 24H2. It will no longer be shipped on June 18, and Microsoft plans to test the experience with the help of Windows Insiders with compatible hardware (Copilot+ PCs).

	Slowly but steadily, Microsoft is improving the taskbar and Start menu in Windows 11. Enthusiasts discovered a few interesting things that may soon be available or already available for testing in Windows 11 preview builds.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In build 22635.3785, which was recently released in the Beta Channel, Microsoft implemented proper <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5039319-microsoft-brings-new-windows-11-start-menu-jump-lists-better-android-sharing/" rel="external nofollow">jump lists for apps</a> pinned to the Start. That change is well-documented in the release notes. What was not mentioned is the ability to drag a pinned to the Start app and pin it to the taskbar. It was one of those odd omissions where you can pin apps from the "All apps" list but not from the pinned section. Fortunately, that is now fixed.

	Microsoft also wants to give you more control over what appears in the notification area. No, you still cannot decouple the battery, volume, and network indicators one from another. What you will be able to do is hide the notification bell icon and display the shortened time and date on the tray clock. For now, none of those two options work, so we have to wait for Microsoft to announce it or at least ship in the hidden but working state.

	It's not too wrong to say that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/statcounter-windows-11-reclaims-some-of-its-lost-customers-after-two-months-of-decline/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11's adoption</a> has not been as great as Microsoft had perhaps hoped for initially. Just a month after the release of the OS, the company began pushing the update out to more systems citing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/due-to-positive-feedback-windows-11-rollout-is-about-to-get-a-whole-lot-faster/" rel="external nofollow">"positive" feedback</a>. And much more recently, in February this year, Microsoft published an advert that explained why users still on Windows 10 should upgrade to 11. The video was titled "<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-new-ad-explains-why-you-should-upgrade-to-windows-11-from-10-already/" rel="external nofollow">Start Fresh Without Starting Over with Windows 11</a>" communicating the idea that the upgrade process is seamless.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of seamless upgrades, Microsoft this week published a new blog post on its official Tech Community website busting all the "myths and misconceptions" surrounding Windows 11 upgrades and moving to cloud-based Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory). The blog post is aimed at IT and system admins.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A part of that article explains how Windows 11 fundamentally is not much different than 10:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		The fact is that Windows 10 to Windows 11 is, by design, the same as a Windows 10 feature update. If you’re like most organizations, feature updates aren’t major projects. Windows 11 is built on Windows 10, even carrying a Windows 10 version number for the highest compatibility. So, you can take a more business-as-usual approach to this upgrade.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Windows 11 is built on the same foundation as Windows 10. It’s an evolution that improves upon Windows 10 strengths and addresses its limitations.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	And Microsoft has good reason for that too. On the verge of the Windows 11 launch, a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/huge-survey-of-professional-pcs-shows-majority-just-arent-ready-for-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">large-scale survey</a> showed how most enterprise systems just weren't ready for the new OS due to the harder system requirements, and the situation was not ideal even <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/survey-shows-nearly-half-the-systems-still-not-ready-for-windows-11-a-whole-year-later/" rel="external nofollow">a year later in 2022</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Harjit Dhaliwal, a Senior Product Marketing Manager of Windows Commercial at Microsoft, who penned the article, says:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Let’s discuss the myths around the move to cloud-native management, with Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID, and Windows 11. In this post, we will address some common questions and misconceptions by sharing insights and perspectives gathered from the conversations we’ve had with organizations of all sizes from around the globe this past year.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We understand that as an IT pro a big part of your role is to help manage change, and to mitigate risks when implementing those changes. So, when considering a joint move to cloud-native management and keeping up to date with Windows 11, why does the task seem so daunting?
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	These "misconceptions" have been looked at under several points. Microsoft has dissected each one of them trying to explain to administrators why they need not be concerned about such issues or worries. They are:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			<p>
				Misconception #1: To deploy Windows 11, you must also go full cloud native.
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Misconception #2: That name change means a bigger change.
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Misconception #3: Application compatibility is a risk when upgrading to Windows 11.
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Misconception #4: The Windows 11 experience change means business productivity will be adversely impacted.
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Misconception #5: Variation in device configuration increases total cost of ownership.
			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Finally, the meat of the blog <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/myths-and-misconceptions-windows-11-and-cloud-native/ba-p/4162011" rel="external nofollow">post</a> has been summed up by Dhaliwal as follows:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		While there are costs and risks associated with either adopting or resisting change, the move from Windows 10 to Windows 11 can be taken with confidence and considered business-as-usual. Indeed, many organizations have already built the muscle to successfully deploy the fourteen Windows 10 semi-annual feature updates to date, and Windows 11 simply represents their next rollout.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The management tools, processes, and risk mitigations you have in place will continue to work for your Windows 11 deployment as they are today. Your organization should not be afraid of moving to Windows 11.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft had once described how its internal rollout process for Windows 11 was its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-proudly-explains-how-the-internal-rollout-of-windows-11-was-its-smoothest-ever/" rel="external nofollow">smoothest ever</a> and the company probably wants admins to feel the same way about their own organizations too. Perhaps coincidentally, Microsoft recently announced it will <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/it-admins-rejoice-microsoft-to-stop-force-installing-windows-11-feature-updates-on-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">stop force-installing</a> Windows feature updates on managed PCs.

	Microsoft today has released a new Beta Channel build for Windows Insiders. The new build, 22635.3785 under KB5039319, adds new jump lists to the Start menu, an improved Windows share feature for easily sharing files with Android devices, upgraded Windows Desktop Spotlight, and more.

	Microsoft has released the latest Windows 11 update for members of the Insider program in the Dev Channel. The build number for this release is 26120.961, under KB5038575. This is once again a pretty minor update for Dev Channel Insider members. Check out the brief changelog:

	Here's another reminder that Dev Channel members have the option to toggle gradual updates for their Windows 11 builds. Here's an explanation of how that works:

Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your device over time once they are ready.

	Microsoft has announced that it has completely removed all traces of the Microsoft Copilot app that users found installed on their systems on their Installed apps list. The first reports of such an app, which was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-pulls-edge-123-from-the-stable-channel-with-its-microsoft-copilot-app/" rel="external nofollow">8KB in size</a>, emerged towards the end of March this year. Soon after, Microsoft had to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-rolls-back-mistakenly-released-copilot-app-on-windows-server-in-latest-edge-update/" rel="external nofollow">roll back</a> the update after it took notice of the issue.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The tech giant later stated that the app was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-windows-copilot-app-we-quietly-installed-is-harmless-and-doesnt-steal-your-data/" rel="external nofollow">totally harmless</a> and it was not meant for capturing or analysing any user data nor did it run any code in the background.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Today, on its Windows health dashboard website that tracks various WIndows server and client bugs, Microsoft has closed the issue and declared it as "resolved." The company says that the app has been removed from both client and server systems alike and users will no longer find it on their Installed apps list.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft recommends installing Edge stable version 126.0.2592.56 (the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/edge-1260259211-released-to-dev-channel-with-new-otp-feature/" rel="external nofollow">Dev version</a> was released at the end of last month) which was released today. Make sure to restart the browser in case you still see the app after finishing the browser update. The company <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-server-2022#3283msgdesc" rel="external nofollow">writes</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>Resolution</strong>: This issue is now resolved with Edge browser updates released on April 26, 2024, and June 13, 2024. Edge version 124.0.2478.67 was released on April 26 and removed the package ‘Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows’ from all servers affected by this issue. Edge version 126.0.2592.56 was released on June 13, 2024, and removed the same package from all Windows client versions affected by this issue. The ‘Microsoft Copilot’ entry will not show in the Installed apps list in the Settings menu once the Edge browser is updated.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Hence, all you have to do is update to the latest Edge release and you should be good. If you still find the Copilot app on your Installed apps list even after restarting the browser after the update, make sure to restart your Windows as well. If it persists, you should probably file the bug on Feedback Hub.

	Following Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), there’s been a lot of buzz around the topic of personal context in AI. The latest announcement from The Browser Company, the team behind the Arc browser, ties into that perfectly. Starting now, Arc will automatically detect when you have an upcoming meeting, nudge you about it, and even let you join it directly from the browser window. While the feature sounds neat, the way it was achieved is far more groundbreaking.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Never having to miss another meeting sounds pretty sweet. The feature, shared by Ben Cunningham of The Browser Company, was shown in a short demo video (with an interesting background track choice) tucked away in the browser’s sidebar. The video shows a small calendar icon ticking down until the user’s next meeting. Hovering over it brings up more of the calendar, including several more upcoming meetings. Once the meeting is about to start, it pops up below the calendar, where you can now tap on “Join” to go straight to the video call.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Right now, the feature is only available to use with a single calendar that’s specifically chosen in your favorites. However, Arc supports both Zoom and Google Meet for this, so that helps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left:40px;">
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><em>said differently: Arc can now abstract any website/app into a set of programmable APIs that let you pull data from them and do actions on them.</em></span></span>
</p>

<p style="margin-left:40px;">
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><em>combine this with the natural language understanding of LLMs and you have the underpinnings of &amp;quot;a browser that can browse for you&amp;quot;</em></span></span>
</p>

<p style="margin-left:40px;">
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><em>&amp;mdash; Josh Miller (@joshm) J</em></span><span style="color:#2980b9;"><em>une 13, 2024</em></span></span>
</p>

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

</p>

<p>
	Perhaps the bigger piece of news comes from Josh Miller, the CEO of The Browser Company, who gave a sneak peek at what the goal is for Arc by referring to the differences between artificial general intelligence and artificial personal intelligence. The former refers to how a chatbot, such as ChatGPT, is taught to respond based on data it was trained on. It understands context at a level comparable to human intelligence — but it doesn’t understand anything outside of the current conversation. However, personal AI draws from what it already knows about you to make your life easier.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“I want my current tools to better understand me. To anticipate my needs. To do work on my behalf. To give me five good minutes back every day,” said Miller.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To that end, it appears that this calendar integration is only the beginning of a larger change for Arc. According to Miller, this feature can be easily expanded to include many more websites and apps in the browser. The calendar feature, for instance, is not powered by the Google API. Miller explains that his team “automatically creates APIs based on structured data from webpages and applications. If you can see it, then we can create an API for it.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The potential here is huge, as countless websites or apps could begin to work together from one browser without additional work from their developers. This is similar to the kind of thing Apple was aiming for with its AI updates — AI that works to help the user as opposed to the general audience. If you’re interested in checking the feature out, it’s available on Mac in the latest update.
</p>

	<span style="font-size:16px;">After years of growing criticism over invasive ad tracking, Google announced in September 2023 that it would phase out third-party cookies from its Chrome browser . Since then, users have been gradually tricked into enabling a supposed “ad privacy feature” that actually tracks people. While the so-called “Privacy Sandbox” is advertised as an improvement over extremely invasive third-party tracking, the tracking is now simply done within the browser by Google itself. To do this, the company theoretically needs the same informed consent from users. Instead, Google is tricking people by pretending to “Turn on an ad privacy feature”. noyb has therefore filed a complaint with the Austrian data protection authority.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>“Informed”, “transparent” and “fair”?</strong></span> Google’s internal browser tracking was introduced to users via a pop-up that said “turn on ad privacy feature” after opening the Chrome browser. In the European Union, users are given the choice to either “Turn it on” or to say “No thanks”, so to refuse consent. In a letter to noyb, Google argued that choosing to click on “Turn it on” would indeed be considered consent to tracking under Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR. In reality, the company concealed the fact that selecting this option would turn on first-party tracking.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Dark patterns.</strong></span> It is no secret that Google has experimented with different wording and interface designs to maximise the consent rates among users. This is done using so-called dark patterns, which are manipulative designs used by companies to trick users, often unlawfully, into agreeing to things they would never otherwise accept.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>But this is an extreme case:</strong></span> Google didn’t just change the colour or size of a button, but simply lied to its users. The only logical way to interpret the Privacy Sandbox pop-up shown to users is to think that Google Chrome is now starting to (technically) protect them from ad tracking. This message was even reinforced by the repeated use of words like “protect”, “limit” and “privacy features”, accompanied by misleading imagery.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Max Schems, Honorary Chairman of noyb: <em>“Google has simply lied to its users. People thought they were agreeing to a privacy feature, but were tricked into accepting Google’s first-party ad tracking. Consent has to be informed, transparent and fair to be legal. Google has done the exact opposite.”</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<img alt="google_consent_banner.png?itok=LwbgleCI" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="360" width="720" src="https://noyb.eu/sites/default/files/styles/landscape_xl/public/2024-06/google_consent_banner.png?itok=LwbgleCI" />
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Being “less terrible” is not a “privacy feature”</strong></span>. Google main argument is that the new Privacy Sandbox is less invasive than third-party tracking systems. While this may be true, it does not mean that Google can do whatever it wants without complying with European data protection law.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Max Schrems:</strong></span> <em>“If you merely steal less money from people than another thief, you can’t call yourself a ‘wealth protection agent’. But that is basically what Google is doing here.”</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

With its Privacy Sandbox, Google wants to take full control over the analysis of the online behaviour of its users: Chrome now tracks every website you visit to generate a list of advertising topics. <span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Complaint filed.</strong></span> Article 4(11) of the GDPR clearly states that consent must, among other things, be a “specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject’s wishes”. Given the highly misleading pop-up banner, the complainant had no way of knowing that he was actually consenting to the processing of his data for targeted advertising. Instead, he was led to believe that Google would protect his personal data. This means that Google clearly didn’t meet the requirements for free consent under the GDPR. noyb is asking the Austrian DPA to order Google to bring its processing operations into compliance with the GDPR, to stop the processing of data collected on the basis of invalid consent, and to inform the data recipients that they must stop processing this data. Last but not least, noyb proposes that the authority impose an effective, proportionate and dissuasive fine.

	Microsoft has been quietly publishing quite a few guides on its official website lately. These include ones on how to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-official-guides-for-windows-11-passkeys-on-how-to-save-use-manage-them/" rel="external nofollow">Save, Use and Manage</a> Windows 11 Passkeys, how to enable TPM and VBS-powered <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-protect-yourself-with-vbs-tpm-based-enhanced-sign-in-security-using-our-guide/" rel="external nofollow">Enhanced Security Sign-in</a> (ESS), and one which talks about <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-wants-you-to-ditch-windows-1110-passwords-with-the-help-of-msa-using-this-guide/" rel="external nofollow">passwordless sign-ins</a> using the Microsoft Account (MSA).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of MSA, the company also published another page that guides users on how to switch from a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-wants-you-to-switch-from-local-to-microsoft-account-using-its-official-guide/" rel="external nofollow">Local to a Microsoft Account</a>. However, since that last update, the company has added a new section that describes the opposite—switching from a Microsoft Account (MSA) to a local one.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Despite this, Microsoft says that it still recommends an MSA over a local account with a separate section that has since been added to this page. In the new section, it explains the differences between the two and the benefits an MSA has over a local account. Microsoft writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>Important</strong>: Microsoft recommends using a Microsoft account, not a local account, when signing in to Windows. Using a Microsoft account in Windows allows for seamless integration of Microsoft services, enhanced security, and sync across devices, unlike a local account.

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The main difference between a local account and a Microsoft account is that a local account is specific to one device, while a Microsoft account can be used across multiple devices and Microsoft services.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			A local account is created on the device and doesn't require Internet connectivity to sign in. It's independent of other services, and it's not connected to the cloud. Your settings, files, and applications are limited to that single device
		</li>
		<li>
			A Microsoft account, on the other hand, is associated to an email address and password that you use with Outlook.com, Hotmail, Office, OneDrive, Skype, Xbox, and Windows. When you sign in to your PC with a Microsoft account, you’re connected to a Microsoft cloud service, and your settings and files can sync across various devices. You can also use it to access other Microsoft services
		</li>
	</ul>

<p>
	Microsoft's official guide about switching from an MSA to a local account is given below:

	Earlier this week, Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates for June 2024. We have covered them in their dedicated articles here: Windows 11 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-patch-tuesday-kb5039212--kb5039213-updates-for-june-2024-are-now-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5039212 / KB5039213</a>) and Windows 10 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5039211--kb5039217--kb5039214--kb5039225-june-2024-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5039211 / KB5039217 / KB5039214 / KB5039225</a>). In the meantime, the company also published a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-released-important-defender-update-for-windows-1011server-install-images/" rel="external nofollow">Defender update</a> for Windows 10, 11, and Server images.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has also announced that Windows 10 version 21H2 has reached the end of servicing status. The company had published <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-to-fully-end-windows-10-version-21h2-support-in-30-days/" rel="external nofollow">a reminder</a> for the same 30 days ago. In its announcement, the company says that Windows will initiate an automatic update to version 22H2 and as always, it has also reiterated about updating to Windows 11 on eligible PCs.

	In addition to these, Microsoft has also reminded us about the differences between LTSC and non-LTSC as it has clarified that Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IOT Enterprise LTSC 2021 will continue to have mainstream support till January of 2027 with the latter having an extended end of support scheduled for 2032.

	Microsoft has released a new build for Windows 10 Insiders, who are fighting <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-debuts-new-windows-10-beta-channel-that-allows-windows-11-upgrade-on-supported-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">the recently revived Beta</a> and the Release preview channels. The latest build, 19045.4593, under KB5039299, updates the Windows Backup app in order to easily save printer device settings and preferences, fixes a hibernation bug related to BitLocker and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The full changelog is given below:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<h3>
		<strong>For Windows Insiders on Windows 10 in the Beta Channel, we’re beginning to roll out the following improvements: </strong>
	</h3>

	<p>
		<strong>[Search on the Taskbar]</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			We’re made some fixes to improve the overall stability of searching for apps in the search box on the taskbar.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>[Windows Backup]</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			You will be able to seamlessly backup and restore personalization preferences of Activity History and Printer Device Settings that are not hardware or accessory dependent such as “Let Windows manager my default printer” and “Store my activity history on this device”. The goal is to ensure that the most used preferences of these settings are backed up, while avoiding those that are tied to specific hardware, to facilitate a seamless transition to a new PC.
		</li>
		<li>
			We are making some important bug fixes to enhance the backup and restore functionality. As part of this work, the issue causing backup failures when desktop and lock screen backgrounds were backed up twice has been resolved.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Insiders in the Beta Channel on Windows 10 who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you can <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-windows-updates-as-soon-as-they-re-available-for-your-device-4911c7af-2644-41f7-a800-6660f9212448" rel="external nofollow">turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available</a> via <strong>Settings &gt; Updated &amp; Security &gt; Windows Update</strong>. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your device over time once they are ready.
	</p>

	<h3>
		<strong>This update includes the following features and improvements for Windows Insiders in BOTH the Beta and Release Preview Channels:</strong>
	</h3>

	<ul>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that affects MSIX applications. When you install them from an HTTPS URI, they fail to open. This issue occurs when the download of the application is not complete. This damages the package.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update affects mobile device management (MDM). When you enroll a device, the MDM client sends more details about the device. The MDM service uses those details to identify the device model and the company that made it.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that affects the default Japanese Input Method Editor (IME). The candidate window stops responding when you do not expect it. Then, it goes back to a former composition state at random.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that affects Direct Composition batched presentations. A brief flash of triangles or boxes show on the screen. This issue affects browsers, like Microsoft Edge, and other apps.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update brings Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles up to date for certain mobile operators.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that might stop your system from resuming from hibernate. This occurs after you turn on BitLocker.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that affects Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC). The issue copies unsigned WDAC policies to the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) disk partition. It is reserved for signed policies.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that affects an app’s jump list on the taskbar. Completing actions from that list might fail. A jump list is a menu that appears when you right-click an app on the taskbar or Start menu. It gives you quick access to recently or frequently used app items.
		</li>
		<li>
			This update addresses an issue that affects a folder context menu. When you choose the command that removes items, the command adds items instead. This occurs when a third-party service implements a sync feature.
		</li>
	</ul>

It will help you choose more formats and add details. You can use different types of compression to add many files to archives in other TAR formats. You can also change the compression level and choose the types of data to store in each archive.
		</li>
		<li>

	Windows 11 will celebrate its third birthday in a few months. While Microsoft already addressed quite a lot of complaints from customers, some things remain stubbornly unchanged, such as the ability to move the taskbar to the top or sides of your screen. Microsoft once said that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-says-changing-taskbar-location-in-windows-11-is-not-important/" rel="external nofollow">that thing is not important</a>, so it appears that third-party apps are the only cure.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, thanks to a new third-party mod, you can finally have your taskbar placed on the left.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Moving Windows 11's taskbar from its traditional place is possible thanks to a new Windhawk module fittingly called "Vertical Taskbar for Windows 11." It is open-source and available for free <a href="https://windhawk.net/mods/taskbar-vertical" rel="external nofollow">on the official Windhawk website</a> (via <a href="https://www.deskmodder.de/blog/2024/06/13/windows-11-vertikale-taskleiste-mit-einem-windhawk-mod-wiederherstellen/" rel="external nofollow">Deskmodder</a>). To make it work, you need to <a href="https://windhawk.net/" rel="external nofollow">download Windhawk</a> and then install the mod itself. After that, the taskbar will move to the right, giving you more vertical space for your content (you can find the wallpaper below <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/here-are-default-macos-sequoia-wallpapers-in-high-resolution/" rel="external nofollow">here</a>).
</p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is worth noting that the mod is not perfect. It has a few interesting quirks. The system tray and app badges are rotated 90 degrees (get ready to twist your head to the right to check time), the Start menu still pops at the middle of the screen, windows fly upward when minimizing or restoring, and jump lists appear in random places. Also, it is not compatible with other taskbar mods and you cannot move the taskbar to the right.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The mod was just released, so maybe some improvements will arrive in future updates. For now, users will have to settle for this rather crude but still working version.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to the official description, the mod works with Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. There is no information on whether it works with Windows 11 version 21H2 or the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2, which, as we know, is not very friendly to some UI customization apps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Microsoft, just let us move the taskbar already!</em>
