Microsoft has released a new out-of-band update for Windows Server to address SQL issues that occur after installing the June 2024 Patch Tuesday updates. According to a post on the Windows Message Center, the problem with Azure Synapse SQL happens on Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 23H2, and Azure Stack HCI 23H2/22H2.

Microsoft has identified an issue wherein Azure Synapse SQL Serverless Pool databases enter a "Recovery pending" state, and has expedited a resolution. This issue is observed after installing the June 2024 Windows security update on Windows Server 2022 (KB5039227), Windows Server, version 23H2 (KB5039236), and Azure Stack HCI versions 23H2 and 22H2 (KB5039227).

Right now, the fix in the form of KB5041054 is available for Windows Server 2022 and Azure Stack HCI 22H2. Patches for the remaining platforms will be available in future Windows Updates. Here is the official changelog for KB5041054:

This update addresses a known issue that affects the BCryptSignHash API. Because of this issue, the API returns “STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER.” This occurs when callers use NULL padding input parameters for RSA signatures. This issue is more likely to occur when Customer-Managed Key (CMK) are in use, like on an Azure Synapse dedicated SQL pool.

KB5041054 is available only in the Microsoft Update Catalog. It is a cumulative update (restart required), which means there is no need to apply previous updates before installing KB5041054. Microsoft says that if a system has yet to install the June 2024 Patch Tuesday updates, it is recommended to apply KB5041054 beforehand.

It is also worth noting that the problem does not affect regular home users with Windows 10 and 11 Home or Professional. However, those users should also be aware of a couple of confirmed issues, such as jumplist bugs and problems with updating from Windows 10 Professional to Enterprise.

Microsoft has announced the launch of TypeScript 5.5, a programming language that builds on top of JavaScript. The new version is straightforward to install, you can get it from NuGet or if you prefer npm, just use the following command:

 npm install -D typescript

While explaining TypeScript, Microsoft mentioned that if you use Visual Studio or VS Code to write JavaScript code, it turns out you’ve really been writing TypeScript code all this time. That enables TypeScript’s editor tooling to do auto-completion, code navigation, and refactorings.

TypeScript 5.5 comes with plenty of new upgrades for software developers to try out and leverage in their projects. Below, you can find a list of all the new features in TypeScript 5.5 and clicking the links will take you to Microsoft's announcement which contains a longer description of each feature plus code examples.

With TypeScript 5.5 out of the door, Microsoft is turning its attention to TypeScript 5.6. According to the announcement, TypeScript 5.6 should be out of the door in early September. The team also said to be on the lookout for its TypeScript 5.6 Iteration plan.

The company said that it is also possible to run nightly versions of TypeScript 5.6 via npm. Nightlies are released at midnight PST every day but it's crucial to understand that these builds may not be well tested and could feature significant bugs. If you want to have a look anyway, enter the following command:

 npm install -D typescript@next

Copilot sits in the taskbar currently, opening on the side of your desktop. Right now, there are only a few customization options when it comes to moving Copilot around your screen, but that's about to change.

A recent update to an Insider build of Windows 11 adds the ability to resize, move, and snap the Copilot experience in the same way you'd rearrange a traditional app. Copilot can be dragged to expand already and you can choose to have it appear over or next to open apps, but it is still stuck to the side of your screen.

Microsoft added the following changes to Build 22635.3785 on June 19, 2024:

As part of this update, we’re also evolving the Copilot** experience on Windows as an app that will be pinned to the taskbar. This enables users to get the benefits of a traditional app experience, including the ability to resize, move, and snap the window – feedback we’ve heard from users throughout the preview of Copilot in Windows. This model also allows Microsoft to more agilely develop and optimize the experience based on user feedback. PLEASE NOTE: Managed commercial devices will not receive this new experience. This includes devices not running Windows 11 Home and are managed by an IT administrator.

As part of the Copilot experience’s evolution on Windows to become an app that is pinned to the taskbar, we are retiring the WIN + C keyboard shortcut.

The changes were outlined in the Windows Insider Blog post about the build.

Since Copilot is evolving into an app experience, Microsoft will retire the WIN + C shortcut to summon the tool. That change goes into effect with the recent update to Build 22635.3785 as well.

Microsoft shipped Windows 11 Build 26241 to Insiders in the Canary Channel recently. The update is rather minor, but it does include a lone new feature: starting with this build, you can drag and drop files between breadcrumbs in File Explorer. The new option makes it easier to move files around on your PC, especially if you use subfolders to organize your files.

Breadcrumbs appear in the Address Bar of File Explorer and show the path to your current location within the app, such as This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files. Being able to drag files into a breadcrumb saves a few clicks, since you don't have to copy and paste a file or move the file another way.

Back in May, Microsoft surprised many people by releasing the next major update for Windows 11, version 24H2, to members of the Windows Insider Program in the Release Preview channel. It included a number of new features, such as HDR background support, support for Wi-Fi 7, and more. It also removed a number of features available in earlier Windows 11 versions, such as Cortana, Tips, and WordPad,

Today, the company revealed a new build for Windows 11 24H2 is now available for Insiders who are signed up to get updates in the Release Preview channel. Microsoft, this week, released Windows 11 version 24H2 feature update for Arm-based Copilot+ PCs that were released soon after. The company also published some details regarding printer support and app performance on Windows 11 24H2 on Arm, as well as a blog post detailing gaming optimizations and improvements including features like Prism emulator and BattlEye anti-cheat.

Aside from those, the company has also updated its support article regarding Wi-Fi 7 which is making its debut with Windows 11 24H2. Pretty much like previous Wi-Fi generations, Microsoft has published standard guidance on how to make sure Wi-Fi 7 is enabled on your PC.

With this, the company has also confirmed that Wi-Fi 7 is available "starting with" Windows 11 version 24H2 and at the moment it is unclear if older Windows 11 versions or Windows 10 will support the technology. We already knew Windows 10 does not support the 6GHz band but previous Windows 11 versions may not have any such limitations.

These include Multi-Link Operation (MLO), enabling devices to use multiple bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and/or 6 GHz) simultaneously. In the 6 GHz band, Wi-Fi 7 promises to offer an impressive 320 MHz-wide channel, known as ultra-wide bandwidth, effectively doubling device speeds and enabling high-bandwidth applications such as AR/VR.

Vivaldi, a feature-packed Chromium browser for desktop and mobile platforms, received a big new update today. Version 6.8 is now available for download with a revamped mail client, real-time memory usage tracking, and other improvements.

	From the official release notes:

In the new Vivaldi 6.8 on desktop, the built-in mail client sees a big update with prefetching for optimized search and mail preview. You also get a faster way to respond to emails. This update further includes real-time updates about tab memory usage, improvements to the address field, and more.

Vivaldi Mail 2.0 brings notable changes to the default settings in the client. Starting with version 6.8, Vivaldi Mail automatically downloads all your emails from the last 30 days. This change enables more efficient search and the preview of the first three lines of each email without the need to open it first.

Vivaldi is well-known for its extensive personalization, and with Mail 2.0, you can specify the prefetching period. It can be one month or all your emails. Just keep in mind that prefetching the entire mailbox will result in much heavier disk space use.

Another neat addition to Mail 2.0 is Quick Reply. At the bottom of each email pane, you will find a quick reply box so that you can respond to the email in no time. Finally, Vivaldi Mail now remembers up to 200 actions, allowing you to undo quite a lot of "oops" moments.

Although the biggest focus of Vivaldi 6.8 is its mail client, the latest update also contains some welcome improvements for the browsing experience:

Real-time memory usage: The built-in Memory Saver now displays precisely how much RAM each tab consumes, allowing you to track down those memory-inefficient tabs and terminate them quickly. Just hover the cursor over the tab to see the impact.

Break Mode: This mode lets you quickly unwind by mating audio and hiding everything on the screen. The resume button now "breathes" to simulate guided breathing and help you relax for a few minutes.

Workspaces Quick Commands: Select tabs, press F2 or Command + E and type "Create New Workspace."

Address Bar Updates: When typing the address of a website that is already open in another tab, Vivaldi will suggest you switch to that tab with a dedicated button.

Chrome Extensions Import: You can now import Chrome extensions from other browsers to Vivaldi.

Here are 5 reasons why I'll never switch to Windows or MacOS

There are several solid reasons for switching to the Linux operating system and, once you do, you probably won't look back.

I started using Linux back in 1997. I had been using Windows 95 and found it to be, well, unreliable. Although I wound up tossing myself into the open-source deep end without a lifeboat, it didn't take me long to realize I'd found my "forever OS."

But why? What makes Linux so special for me that I wouldn't even consider making the switch to either MacOS or Windows as my primary OS? Even though I do use MacOS for certain tasks (such as video editing), there's not been one instance when I considered making the permanent switch. As for Windows, well, every time I have to touch that operating system, I'm reminded why I never liked it from the beginning.

Why don't we get to the method behind my madness?

	Are you ready?

1. It makes sense

Whenever I have to work with another operating system, I find myself regularly thinking, "This doesn't make any sense!" Linux, on the other hand, was designed by someone (Linus Torvalds) who understood how to create an operating system in a logical manner.

Here's a good example. On Windows, if you want to run a command, you have to run it from the folder in which the executable is saved. Say, for instance, you want to run Firefox from the command line. To do that on Windows, you might first have to change into the Mozilla Firefox directory and then issue the command start firefox.exe. On Linux, you can type firefox from any directory and the application will launch. This is possible on Linux because there are certain directories that are in a user's $PATH, which means the commands within those directories are recognized from anywhere in the filesystem. There's no extra work to be done. It's simple. It makes sense.

I've always found that every configuration, every setup, every installation on Linux makes sense, from the low-level stuff all the way to the desktop.

2. It's easy

This might run counter to the public opinion, but Linux is actually far easier than either MacOS or Windows. I will admit that in those early days, Linux was challenging. However, over the years, the developers and designers listened to the users and created an operating system (and various distributions) that simplifies nearly every aspect of using a computer. And, before you think it, you don't have to use the command line on Linux. You could go your entire life with Linux and never so much as open the terminal application. When people ask me how hard it is to install Linux, I tell them, "If you can install an application on Windows, you can install the Linux operating system."

Another area where Linux shines in its ease is installing applications. If you want an app, you open the desktop's app store, search for it, and click Install. If you download an installer (such as a .deb or .rpm file), most often your desktop is set up to automatically open the likes of GDebi (a GUI tool for installing downloaded applications). Or you could use the command line package manager, such as sudo apt-get install opera -y. If you can't find the app in the default repositories, try one of the universal package managers, like Snap (sudo snap install opera).

It never ceases to amaze me how complicated some Windows app installations are. Even worse, you might wind up having to reboot the computer to complete the installation. The only time you ever have to reboot a Linux computer is when the kernel gets upgraded (unless you're using Fedora, which does often require a reboot).

3. It lets me work how I want

This one is important to me. I've always found both MacOS and Windows to be incredibly limiting in flexibility. I want to work in a way that best suits me, not Apple or Microsoft. Thanks to Linux, I can do that.

If I don't like how something functions, I can change it. You see, Linux isn't locked down into one way of doing things. In fact, with Linux, there's a never-ending combination of how you can do things. This is made possible because of various distributions, desktop environments, window managers, package managers, and more.

Here's a simple example. I copy/paste quite often. I'll be working on something and realize that I need to move a paragraph. At the same time, I might have copied a URL and need to paste it as a link. Instead of having to copy/paste twice, I can use Ctrl+c/Ctrl+v on the paragraph and use select/middle mouse click for the link. The middle mouse paste feature has always been such an efficient way of copying text and when you combine it with the traditional method, it makes things very easy.

4. It's flexible

If you like, you can use Linux as is. Install Ubuntu or Linux Mint and use it as the developers intended. Or maybe you don't like the GNOME desktop, so you install Plasma. You prefer a dock instead of a traditional panel, so you install Cairo. You don't like having the dock on the bottom of the screen, so you move it to the left side.

With Linux, there is no vendor lock-in. You are not limited to what the desktop looks like, how it behaves, or what it does or does not do for you. Even within a single desktop environment, you can bend and twist it however you like. With GNOME, there are GNOME Extensions to add different features and behaviors. With Plasma, you can theme it, customize it, add widgets and plugins, and more. With Xfce… the sky's the limit. Linux is the ideal operating system for those who like to tinker and tweak. Or, if you don't, you'll find a variety of distributions, one of which will appeal to your aesthetic and use case.

5. It's secure

In nearly thirty years of usage, I've only come across a single instance of malicious software. I'd inherited a job working on a Linux server that was poorly set up. Somehow, a rootkit was installed and I not only had to discover it was there, but also migrate everything to a new server. That was the only time such an occurrence happened.

Other than that, I've never once worried about malware, ransomware, or viruses. Why? Linux is exponentially more secure than Windows and considerably more secure than MacOS. Before you think Linux is the perfect solution to solve all of your security issues, know that any time a computer is connected to a network it's vulnerable. The difference is how easily that vulnerability can be exploited.

With Linux, it's not easy because the operating system was designed, from the ground up, with security at its heart. And with the help of SELinux and AppArmor, that security becomes even tighter. When using Windows (and even MacOS to an extent), it's always important to use an anti-virus/anti-malware solution. On Linux, that's not necessary.

And there you have it: five reasons why I'll never switch to Windows or MacOS as my go-to operating system.

Microsoft, this week, released Windows 11 version 24H2 feature update, for Arm-based Copilot+ PCs that were released yesterday. And earlier today, the company published some details regarding printer support and app performance on Windows 11 24H2 on Arm.

Following those updates, the company has now published more details regarding some of the gaming-related improvements and optimizations as well as features Microsoft has in store for such Arm-based Copilot+ devices.

In a new blog post on the Microsoft developer website, the company has discussed technologies like Prism emulator, BattleEye Anti-cheat, and more. It has also briefly mentioned Automatic Super Resolution (AutoSR).

First up, Microsoft has explained the benefits of utilizing the Prism emulator:

Prism works transparently whenever you open a x86 or x64 app on an Arm-based Windows 11 device by converting the x86 or x64 code to the Arm64 instruction set – without additional work required from developers.

Given that many of today’s games are x86 or x64, Prism unlocks a large back catalog of games that work great on Arm under emulation.

The company has also published a video of Baldur's Gate 3 running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon X PC with the help of Prism. As you can see in the video below, the performance is not amazing but it is far from terrible:

Aside from Prism, Microsoft has also talked about anti-cheat support on Windows 11 24H2 for Arm. The tech giant says that all major anti-cheat solutions like Denuvo, Welbia, and BattlEye, will work with Windows on Arm. The company has also specifically talked about BattlEye's anti-cheat support. It writes:

.. anti-cheat solutions such as BattlEye, Denuvo Anti-Cheat, and Wellbia XIGNCODE3 / UNCHEATER all now support Windows on Arm! Anti-cheat support on Arm means gamers can enjoy their favorite titles securely and fairly, on Copilot+ PCs.

BattlEye, one of the leading anti-cheat solutions in the gaming industry, has extended its support to Arm. .. With BattlEye’s support on Arm, many popular games that exclusively use BattlEye are now fully compatible with Arm-based devices.

BattlEye will be supported in the Windows 11 24H2 update, version[sic] 26100.863.

Once again, a demo has been provided this time in the form of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege which you can watch below:

Microsoft, this week, released Windows 11 version 24H2 feature update, for Arm-based Copilot+ PCs, which also followed soon after. While the tech giant detailed some of the new exclusive Copilot+ PC features in a blog post, in a separate support article earlier today, it also added more information related to printer and app support.

In terms of app support, Microsoft says that Windows apps should work with Arm-based PCs just like with x86 computers and no requirement necessitates that they have to be from the Microsoft Store. However, it does add the apps that are optimized specifically for Windows on Arm will work better.

	Microsoft writes:

Can I run my Windows apps on my Windows 11 Arm-based PCs?

Yes, you can install and run most Windows apps on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs just as you would on other Windows 11 PCs. Apps do not need to come from the Microsoft Store in Windows.

Apps that have been rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs will have the best performance. Many of the top Windows apps have been rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs already and more are on the way.

Other apps that have not been built for Windows Arm-based PCs will run seamlessly using emulation. Windows 11 Arm-based PCs running Windows 11 24H2 include the Prism emulator for improved performance for emulated applications.

Moving on to printers, Microsoft has added that printers should also work with Arm-based PCs similar to how they work on x86 systems. It has also specifically mentioned that Mopria-based printers should work without any issues. Microsoft last year started testing Mopra-exclusive WPP or Windows Protected Print Mode for Windows 11 24H2.

Aside from printers, it has also talked about other peripheral devices too. Microsoft writes:

Can I use printers and other peripherals with my Windows 11 Arm-based PC?

Yes, you can. Windows 11 Arm-based PCs supports the majority of printers, including printers that support the printing standard Mopria. You can check to see if a printer is Mopria certified at mopria.org. Printers from large printer manufacturers like HP and Xerox have released Printer Support Apps, companion printing apps designed to enhance the Windows print experience.

Peripherals will work if the drivers they depend on are built into Windows 11, or if the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for the device. It's a good idea to check whether the hardware developer has published a version of the driver that runs on a Windows 11 Arm-based PC.

Last week, Microsoft released the latest Beta Channel build for members of the Windows Insider Program, with the build number 22635.3785 under KB503931. Today, Microsoft announced it is rolling out even more new features for that Beta Channel build, adding support for using the Copilot AI assistant more like a separate app. This feature was previously added for Windows 11 Insider users on the Dev Channel build and also in the Canary Channel build a few weeks ago.

Microsoft has offered no explanation for why this build is no longer available to download for Canary Channel Insiders.

On the surface, the 26236 release of Windows 11 in the Canary Channel seemed to be a pretty minor update. The biggest feature was that it added a new account manager experience for the Windows 11 Start menu. Microsoft said at the time people could use the Start menu to get "a quick glanceable view of your account benefits and makes it easy to manage account settings."

The original blog post for the new Canary Channel build also noted a couple of small bug fixes that were included with this update. It also stated there was "a small set of general improvements and fixes" with build 26236 but did not offer any specifics.

Microsoft also noted two known issues with this Canary Channel update. One was that some Insiders in both the Canary and Dev Channels were "stuck on Build 26040 or Build 23620." The other known issue listed in the blog post related to the Task Manager, with Microsoft stating there were "colors in the Performance section" that were not "displaying correctly in dark mode."

We will update this post when Microsoft resumes the rollout of Windows 11 build 26236 for Canary Channel Insiders.

Earlier this month, Mozilla released a big new feature update for its browser in the Release channel. Version 127 delivered a couple of notable changes and new capabilities, such as auto-start on Windows, additional password protection for improved safety, and a host of bug fixes. Now, several days later, Mozilla is back with another, this time minor update, for Firefox users.

According to the official release notes, Firefox 127.0.1 fixes the problem of losing tabs on systems with password-protected profiles, installation issues on Windows, slow audio on Linux, and incorrect cookie rejection on certain websites.

Here is what is new in Mozilla Firefox 127.0.1:

Version 127.0.1, first offered to Release channel users on June 19, 2024

Fixed an issue where users with a primary password set on their profile could lose their previous session of tabs upon upgrading if they dismissed the primary password prompt (bug 1901899).

Fixed an issue where Linux users with accessibility.monoaudio.enable set to true were experiencing slow audio speeds (bug 1900972).

Fixed an issue where, in some circumstances, the Firefox installer on Windows failed to complete the installation (bug 1896868).

Fixed an issue causing Firefox to incorrectly reject cookies for certain websites (bug 1901325).

Existing Firefox customers can keep using the browser as is. Eventually, it will update itself in the background and switch to the latest version upon the next restart. However, you can speed up the upgrade process by heading to Menu > Help > About Firefox.

You can download Firefox from the official website. The browser is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Windows 10 and 11 users can also get Firefox from the Microsoft Store. Release notes for Firefox 127.0 are available here.

In other news, according to Statcounter, Mozilla Firefox lost a bit of its user base in May 2024 and currently has roughly 6.64% of the desktop browser market.

Being a Firefox user can be quite difficult these days. Besides getting regular prompts to switch to the browser of a mega-corpo, excuse the Cyberpunk slang, it is predominantly issues with certain websites and services that Firefox users have to battle against.

One of the latest examples comes from Google-owned YouTube. Some Firefox users noticed playback issues on YouTube for several months. These affected high resolution videos only, from 1080p and up. To make matters worse, no clear pattern could be identified.

Some videos played fine, others would stop abruptly when they ran out of buffer. The issue affected Firefox only (and maybe Firefox forks). All Chromium-based browsers were not affected by it.

Investigation points at YouTube as the culprit

After months of investigating the issue, Mozilla finally found a fix for the issue. This fix will be released as Firefox 127.0.2 later this month, as it did not make it into the Firefox 127.0.1 release of today.

The fixing took longer than expected, as it was difficult to reproduce the issue.

According to Mozilla engineer Alastor Wu, the issues was caused by Google's YouTube service and not by a regression in Firefox.

He writes on Bugzilla: "This problem is triggered by bad muxed VP9 bytestream served by Youtube, so it's not a regression on our side, this issue can also be reproduced on old versions Firefox".

In other words: Google introduced the issue on YouTube. While there is no evidence that Google did so deliberately, it is clear that the outcome is catastrophic for affected Firefox users and Mozilla.

Affected users might have blamed Firefox for the issue. Some may even have switched to a Chromium-based browser, as these worked without any issue.

Not the first time, likely not the last

Back in 2018, Firefox engineers complained on Twitter (now-X), that YouTube was loading five times slower in non-Chromium browsers. The issue affected Firefox and the old version of Microsoft Edge back then.

Google was using a deprecated API on YouTube that only Chromium supported. This left Firefox, Edge, and other non-Chromium browsers standing in the rain.

In 2023, Firefox users started to notice another issue on YouTube. Videos would take longer to load, which only affected the browser and not Chromium-based browsers. Microsoft, having switched Edge to a Chromium-base by then, was not affected by the issue.

	One potential explanation

While some may cry foul-play immediately, there are other explanations. Here is one:

Google may test changes only in Chrome / Chromium, and not in Firefox. Or it may test changes only cursory in other browsers. This could lead to bugs that are not noticed when new changes are implemented.

	Closing Words

The issue that some Firefox users experienced for the past couple of months is likely not the last issue that is going to affect Firefox on YouTube.

Are you using Firefox? Did you experience any issues on YouTube lately?

In the past few months, Microsoft has been spotted using annoying full-screen multipage popup ads to get Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11.

And as it now seems, Microsoft is back at it again. This time, the company is using annoying ads to try and get users to use Microsoft Edge as the default browser in Windows 11 (via Windows Latest). The outlet stated that the company recently started using a 3D banner to 'encourage' users to transition to Microsoft Edge as the default browser.

It seems to be an experiment that Microsoft is currently testing with limited users, but it's reportedly rolling out to more users with the Edge Stable version.

I tried to investigate the issue to see whether I could replicate similar results. Indeed, Microsoft is using a banner to get users to use Microsoft Edge as the default browser in Windows 11. The banner states "Edge helps you stay safer online with built-in tools that keep you secure and your browsing data private."

Upon clicking the Confirm button, you'll be redirected to the settings app and required to click the Set default button to make Microsoft Edge the default browser in Windows 11.

However, clicking the Not Now button seemingly fixed the issue, as the ad banner disappeared. It didn't reappear after relaunching the browser, either.

Mozilla placed Microsoft under fire for using 'harmful designs' and deceptive tactics to give Edge a competitive advantage over other browsers on Windows.

Even though Microsoft is gradually rolling out the Windows 11 2024 Update to devices known to have a good upgrade experience, this new version includes a slew of new features and changes that could cause different issues.

For example, you can encounter driver problems, compatibility issues, and even issues with existing features. Furthermore, since version 24H2 requires reinstallation, it's possible to experience other issues related to the upgrade process rather than the new version.

Typically, this means that the setup has failed to detect the TPM and Secure Boot components or the processor is incompatible. Sometimes, you may even receive the error codes 0xC1900200 – 0x20008 and 0xC1900202 – 0x20008, indicating that the device doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

These are the minimum requirements to install any version of Windows 11:

Processor: 1GHz or faster CPU or System on a Chip (SoC) with two or more cores.

 Memory: 4GB.

 Storage: 64GB or larger.

TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.

Display resolution: High definition (720p) display greater than 9 inches diagonally, 8 bits per color channel.

If you want to access the new AI features available on version 24H2, you will typically have a computer featuring at least a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor, 16GB of RAM, and at least 256GB of SSD storage.

	Enable TPM and Secure Boot

Yes, after this many years, you can run elevated commands with Sudo on Windows 11.

Starting with the release of the Windows 11 2024 Update (version 24H2), Microsoft is introducing a Linux-like version of the Sudo (superuser do) command that works in any of the consoles of the Windows Terminal, including Command Prompt and PowerShell.

Usually, when you have to run an elevated command, you right-click the Windows Terminal from the Start menu or Taskbar, choose the "Run as administrator" option, and then run the command. Other times, you open the terminal as a standard user, and once you run the command and receive the "Access is denied" message, you relaunch the terminal as administrator to execute the command successfully.

The Sudo command for Windows 11 streamlines the process by elevating any command without the extra steps of opening a command-line console as admin.

Although Microsoft could have chosen a different approach and name for the command, the company wanted to integrate an experience similar to UNIX-based operating systems to avoid an additional learning curb.

If you want to use the feature, you will have to enable and configure it manually, and the easiest way is to use the Settings app.

In this how-to guide, I will share the steps to enable the Sudo command and run elevated commands.

The "Windows 11 Setup" is the wizard that helps you install the operating system using a USB installation media. Although the setup interface has remained virtually unchanged for many years, the new update aims to align the design with the Media Creation Tool. However, the core experience is still the same as the legacy version.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 Pro customers are having issues when trying to upgrade to a valid Windows 11 Enterprise subscription. A valid subscription license is assigned from the Microsoft 365 admin center. According to Microsoft, the upgrade fails with an "Access denied" error accompanied by an error code "0x80070005."

Microsoft has tracked down the bug and says it originated with the April 2024 Patch Tuesday update under KB5036893 which was also a major Windows 11 23H2 feature update as it was the arrival of Moment 5. The update was also the cause of some other major bugs and issues including system slowdown 0x8007000d and 0x800705b9 errors. You can read about those issues its dedicated article linked here.

Microsoft has yet to provide more details about the issue on its Windows health dashboard website since at the time of writing; it has only updated its Patch Tuesday support articles. In the known issues section, it has added this new issue with the symptom and its workaround, though the workaround is hardly a workaround at all as it is simply a declarative that confirms Microsoft is looking into the issue:

Earlier today, Microsoft confirmed that a bug was affecting the right-click context menu of Taskbar and Start menu apps like the New Teams and the New Outlook for Windows. The company has now confirmed another issue, this time, with the Photos app wherein the application would fail to start due to a conflict with a non-admin-based group policy or CSP (configuration service provider) policy.

On its Windows health dashboard website, Microsoft has explained how the issue reared its head after a recent update to the Photos app which now fails when the BlockNonAdminUserInstall CSP policy or the equivalent Group Policy is enabled. The good news is that this should not affect home users.

	The tech giant writes:

If your device has updated the Microsoft Photos app from the Windows store on or after June 4, 2024 (version 2024.11050.29009.0 and above), you might face issues starting the application. On launching the app, it might display a spinning circle, after which it might disappear. If you have the Procmon monitoring tool installed in your device, this error might display as Access Denied error on Process Exit (‘Exit Status: -2147024891’).

This issue is most likely to occur if you have enabled either the Prevent non-admin users from installing packaged Windows apps policy or its Configuration Service provider (CSP) equivalent policy, BlockNonAdminUserInstall.

Users with Windows Home edition are unlikely to experience this issue, as the policies which may cause this issue to happen are less likely to be applied in home environments.

The problem affects Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2 and the company says that it is working on the fix and it should be available in a future update.

Towards the end of April, Microsoft released the KB5036979 preview update for Windows 10 22H2. As with most updates, there were known issues with this one too. However, aside from those listed, Microsoft has also confirmed a new problem related to the New Teams and New Outlook for Windows right-clicking. The same bug also affects Windows 10 21H2 since the May 2024 Patch Tuesday.

Post installation of the update, when a user right-clicks on the New Teams or New Outlook icon on the Start menu or Taskbar, the "Open with" dialogue box opens instead of the proper context menu.

Here's what a correctly working right-click context menu for Teams should be:
