	Earlier today, Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5041580--kb5041578--kb5041773--kb5041782-august-2024-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5041580 / KB5041578 / KB5041773 / KB5041782</a>), and Windows 11 versions 23H2, 22H2, 21H2 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-patch-tuesday-update-out-now-for-23h2-22h2-kb5041585-and-21h2-kb5041592/" rel="external nofollow">KB5041585 / KB5041592</a>), as well as for 24H2 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/patch-tuesday-update-kb5041571-hits-copilot-pcs-running-windows-11-24h2/" rel="external nofollow">KB5041571</a>).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Alongside these, the tech giant also quietly (and finally) retired KB5034441 and KB5034440 WinRE updates which would be a constant headache for both Windows 10 and 11 users since they would lead to "0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE" and fail to install on systems that did not have sufficient space on their system's recovery partition.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As such users have had to manually resize their recovery partition either with the help of a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-details-why-your-recent-windows-11-winre-updates-may-have-been-failing/" rel="external nofollow">step-by-step guide (KB5028997)</a> that Microsoft published or with the help of a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5034441kb5034440-winre-updates-causing-0x80070643-error-gets-tweaked-powershell-script/" rel="external nofollow">PowerShell script</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those that have not been following it, Microsoft released these WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) updates to address a BitLocker Secure Boot bypass vulnerability under "CVE-2024-20666". Microsoft said that the security flaw could allow attackers to bypass BitLocker encryption if they managed to get physical access to an unpatched PC. (This BitLocker-related issue is different from the one the company <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-fixed-the-problem-with-windows-booting-into-bitlocker-recovery/" rel="external nofollow">just fixed</a> with its latest Patch Tuesday, the ones linked in the first para.)
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Once Microsoft became aware of the "0x80070643" install fail bug, the company <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-we-are-working-on-kb5034441kb5034440-0x80070643---errorinstallfailure-fix/" rel="external nofollow">promised that it would fix</a> the issue such that the manual workaround using the aforementioned methods was no longer necessary.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, earlier this year in May, Microsoft accepted defeat admitting that an "<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-admits-it-cant-fix-windows-10-kb5034441-0x80070643---errorinstallfailure/" rel="external nofollow">automatic resolution of this issue won't be available</a>" via future Windows updates, and as such, manual workaround was the only way to fix it. In order to make it easy for users to figure out whether they needed the WinRE update, Microsoft also published a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-posts-requirements-for-kb5034441kb5034440-updates-that-cause-0x80070643-error/" rel="external nofollow">list of requirements</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, though, these troublesome WinRE updates have been pulled completely. On the support documents for KB5042321 and KB504232, which have replaced KB5034440 and KB5034441 respectively, Microsoft has added the following information:

	A few weeks ago, Microsoft confirmed <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5040442--kb5040427-microsoft-confirms-windows-pcs-boot-into-bitlocker-recovery/" rel="external nofollow">an odd bug</a> in the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-patch-tuesday-update-out-now-for-23h2-22h2-kb5040442-and-21h2-kb5040431/" rel="external nofollow">latest Windows 10 and 11 Patch Tuesday updates</a>. According to the company's findings and user reports, applying the July 2024 Patch Tuesday updates caused some systems to boot into BitLocker Recovery on systems with Device Encryption. Now, with the August 2024 Patch Tuesday updates out, the bug is finally resolved.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has updated <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-23h2#3358msgdesc" rel="external nofollow">the official Windows Health Dashboard website</a> to clarify that affected customers can fix the problem by installing the latest update. Those include <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-patch-tuesday-update-out-now-for-23h2-22h2-kb5041585-and-21h2-kb5041592/" rel="external nofollow">KB5041585 for Windows 11</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5041580--kb5041578--kb5041773--kb5041782-august-2024-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5041580 for Windows 10</a>. If you are not there yet and you have a computer that asks you to enter your BitLocker recovery key, just do what it wants—Microsoft says entering your recovery key is enough to get to the desktop without any extra issues:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		This issue was resolved by Windows updates released August 13, 2024, and later. We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If you install an update released August 13, 2024 (KB5041585) or later, you do not need to use a workaround for this issue. If you are using an update released before Agusut 13, 2024, and have this issue, your device should proceed to start up normally from the BitLocker recovery screen once the recovery key has been entered. You can retrieve the recovery key by logging into the BitLocker recovery screen portal with your Microsoft account.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft recently posted some new guides about retrieving BitLocker keys, so <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-posts-official-bitlocker-key-recovery-and-back-up-guide-for-windows-1110-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">check them out here</a> if you do not know where to look for your encryption keys.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The problem with Windows PCs booting into BitLocker recovery affected client Windows versions from Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB all the way up to the latest Windows 11 releases. Server editions were also hit, from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2022.

	When AMD announced its Ryzen 9000 series desktop processor lineup at Computex earlier this year, the company touted big performance gains thanks to a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-launches-ryzen-9950x-9900x-9700x-9600x-powered-by-massive-16-ipc-boosted-zen-5/" rel="external nofollow">massive 16% IPC</a> (instructions per clock/cycle) boost.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While the company's claims probably have not been untrue, the overall performance of a processor is the byproduct of not just IPC but the clock speed too, and this is where a lot of the media who reviewed the chip felt it fell short. For example, the octa-core Ryzen 7 9700X is much more efficient than the 7700X but it leaves performance on the table, at least on Windows 11 it seems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to a comparison by the German website PC Games Hardware (PCGH), it seems Windows 11 24H2 may not be the right OS choice if you have a Zen 5-based Ryzen 9000 series CPU. The site found in its comparison that in most instances, the Linux distro Nobara, which is supposedly optimized for gaming, was faster than Windows 11 24H2. And the performance gap was not limited to just gaming either as productivity tests also showed Ryzen 9700X performing better on Linux.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although PCCH has conducted more game tests, we decided to show the performance difference in <em>Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty</em> expansion pack, which is known to be very CPU-heavy, so much so that the game devs once <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/cyberpunk-2077-dev-warns-pc-users-before-phantom-liberty-saying-check-your-cooling-system/" rel="external nofollow">cautioned about sufficient thermal cooling</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the title, Linux Nobara came out faster in the average framerates as well as the percentile lows, indicating a better and smoother overall gaming experience on Linux.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Ryzen 9700X performance in Windows vs Linux" class="ipsImage" height="444" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/08/1723585280_cb_2077_ryzen_9700x_windows_vs_linux_pcgh.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Meanwhile, Nobara also showcased excellent performance with file archiving as both compression and decompression were noticeably faster (image below). The former is more memory-dependent and that is why it sees a big boost when faster memory is added like we saw in our <a href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/t-force-memory-review-ddr5-7600-vs-ddr5-6000-is-quicker-better-well-of-course/#:~:text=helps%20with%20compression" rel="external nofollow">DDR5-7600 RAM kit review</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Linux distro was faster in decompression too indicating that it is better than Windows 11 24H2 at both overall resource management, be it memory or CPU.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Ryzen 9700X performance in Windows vs Linux" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/08/1723585274_7-zip_ryzen_9700x_windows_vs_linux_pcgh.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Phoronix also conducted a wide range of tests on Linux and found that Zen 5 saw impressive improvement over Zen 4, again implying that a Ryzen 9000 series CPU owner could be looking at a better-performing setup if they were to switch to a lighter Linux distro.
</p>

<p class="img-center">

</p>

<p>
	Bear in mind though that Windows 11 24H2 is <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5039239-microsoft-releases-windows-11-24h2-2024-update-but-you-may-not-get-it/" rel="external nofollow">yet to be generally available for non-Copilot+ PCs</a> and that implies optimizations could probably be pending.

	Back in May, a report suggested that Microsoft was looking to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-may-default-encrypt-your-data-with-bitlocker-on-windows-11-24h2-home-pcs-too/" rel="external nofollow">default-encrypt Windows 11 24H2</a> Home PCs. This could lead to potential performance loss, even on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-default-bitlocker-on-your-windows-11-pc-is-hitting-even-the-fastest-ssds-hard/" rel="external nofollow">fast NVMe SSDs</a>, though CPUs can be a different story with AMD touting a massive encryption performance boost (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-launches-ryzen-9950x-9900x-9700x-9600x-powered-by-massive-16-ipc-boosted-zen-5/" rel="external nofollow">AES-XTS</a>) with its newly released Ryzen 9000 series processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The problem with this situation is that users will need to have a BitLocker recovery key if this were to happen, and it is one of the benefits of having a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-backtracks-and-restores-microsoft-account-to-local-account-switching-guide/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Account (MSA)</a> over a local account.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another scary situation arose recently where users found their PCs <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5040442--kb5040427-microsoft-confirms-windows-pcs-boot-into-bitlocker-recovery/" rel="external nofollow">booted into a BitLocker recovery</a> screen after last month's Patch Tuesday updates. At the time of writing the issue is still unresolved with Microsoft seemingly still investigating it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Perhaps looking at the upcoming change in 24H2 as well as the boot bug, Microsoft has now added a bunch of new guides to its official website regarding BitLocker device encryption. In particular, two of them are certainly the most useful ones which walk users through finding their BitLocker recovery key and backing up the said key.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has elaborated the steps necessary to retrieve the key:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

<p>
	Besides the ones above, Microsoft has also recommended that users look at printouts and USB flash drives in case they were saved there.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The tech giant has also explained why backing up the BitLocker recovery key is crucial. "It’s important to verify that this backup exists and is accessible, or to create an extra backup of your own" says Microsoft.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Following that, the company has detailed the steps to create a BitLocker key back up:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ol style="list-style-type:decimal">

	In May 2024, Microsoft let members of the Microsoft 365 Insider program try out r<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-365-insiders-can-try-out-new-regex-functions-in-excel-for-windows-and-mac-apps/" rel="external nofollow">egular expression (regex) functions in the Excel spreadsheet apps</a> for both Windows and Mac PCs. As Microsoft stated at the time, the new regex functions "are sequences of characters that define search patterns." They can be used to check if a string in the spreadsheet has a certain pattern, among other uses.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Today, the <a href="https://insider.microsoft365.com/en-us/blog/new-regex-modes-for-xlookup-and-xmatch" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft 365 Insider blog</a> announced that those users can try out some new regex modes in the Excel Windows and Mac apps for two more functions. It stated:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Now you can take advantage of regex within the existing XLOOKUP and XMATCH functions, by using the new [match_mode] = 3 and a regex pattern as the lookup_value. This will allow XLOOKUP and XMATCH to match against parts of text in a cell, or by any other pattern of text that can be described with regex.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	When using the regex modes, Microsoft says certain symbols, which it labels as "tokens" that can match a large number of characters. Some of the common tokens that Excel users can try out include the following:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			“[0-9]”: any numerical digit
		</li>
		<li>
			“[a-z]”: a character in the range of a to z
		</li>
		<li>
			“.”: any character
		</li>
		<li>
			“a”: the “a” character
		</li>
		<li>
			“a*”: zero or more “a”
		</li>
		<li>
			“a+”: one or more “a”
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft says if you cannot find a token to use for your regex functions, you can type in a text prompt in Copilot and see if its generative AI can come up with the tokens you need.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Members of the Microsoft 365 Insider program in the Beta channel can try out the new regex functions now. Windows users will need to have Version 2408 (Build 17931.20000) installed, while Mac users will have to have Version 16.89 (Build 24080715) installed. There's no word on when these new Excel regex functions will become generally available for all users of the spreadsheet app.

	Mozilla has released a small update for Firefox 129, which arrived in the Release channel earlier this month. Version 129.0.1 focuses on fixing two video-related bugs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to the official release notes, in Firefox 129.0.1, Mozilla developers resolved the problem with Firefox failing to play DRM-protected videos on platforms like Hulu or Netflix. Users reported the browser getting stuck on infinite loads without any playback on Windows systems, while macOS and Ubuntu had no problems with playing DRM-protected content.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides letting you use streaming platforms again, Firefox 129.0.1 fixed the bug with the browser crashing when dragging video files onto certain websites, such as Twitter. Instead of uploading a video or showing its thumbnail, Firefox would turn the entire page black and then crash.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is the complete changelog:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<em>        Fixed playback issues on some websites with copyrighted video served via digital rights management. (Bug 1911283)</em>
	</li>
	<li>
		<em>        Fixed a crash when dragging a video file onto some websites. (Bug 1910990)</em>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unlike the previous update, version 129.0.1 does not contain any security fixes, enterprise changes, web platform improvements, or new features. In case you missed it, version 129 introduced big updates for the Reader Mode, tab previews (hover the cursor over a tab to see its thumbnail), security improvements, and more. You can check out the full release notes for Firefox 129 here.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To update Firefox to the latest version, click Menu &gt; Help &gt; About Firefox and wait for the browser to download and install available updates. Also, you can download its installer from the official website or the Microsoft Store if you use Firefox on Windows 10 and 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By the way, some may want to switch to Firefox, considering that Chrome and other browsers are deprecating Manifest V2 extensions. Mozilla, on the other hand, plans to continue supporting V2-based browser extensions.
</p>

They include a new notification option so users can be alerted to new responses on their forms, along with a way to set up dates and times so they can both start and stop accepting those responses. Both of these new features will be added for Lists users via SharePoint sometime in September.

	What you need to know

<ul>
	<li>
		Recently, Microsoft announced that the kernel in WSL2 would finally be bumped to a more modern version, and was pushed to a pre-release version.
	</li>
	<li>
		The new kernel, 6.6.36.3 has now been rolled back to the much older 5.15.153.1-2 while issues are debugged.
	</li>
	<li>
		The issues could relate to iptables, which are required for popular tool, Docker.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Recently, Microsoft announced it was finally going to bump the old kernel used in the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/wsl" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/wsl" rel="external nofollow">Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)</a> on WSL2 to something more modern. That hasn't happened on the stable release yet, and it's a good job.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the latest pre-release candidate of WSL2, the kernel has been rolled back from the newer 6.6.36.3 to the previously used 5.15.153.1-2 while issues are debugged.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here's the full changelog for WSL2 2.3.17 which is available to download now from <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases" href="https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">GitHub</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Revert Linux kernel to 5.15.153.1-2 while issues are being debugged
	</li>
	<li>
		Fix race condition when WSL2 distribution is stopped
	</li>
	<li>
		Use a format attribute to catch printf format errors compile time
	</li>
	<li>
		Fix segfault in init when boot.initPath doesn't exist
	</li>
	<li>
		Add default Hyper-V firewall rules to allow inbound mDNS traffic
	</li>
	<li>
		Update Windows SDK to version 26100
	</li>
	<li>
		Update Microsoft.Windows.ImplementationLibrary to version 1.0.240803.1
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The changelog isn't specific to what the issues are, but there are potential signs it could relate to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iptables" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iptables" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">iptables</a>. This issue highlighted recently focuses on the feature, and it's particularly important since Docker, of note, relies on iptables.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One possible explanation from a WSL Community Telegram group I'm part of suggests that because some Linux distros are moving to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nftables" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nftables" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">nftables</a> in place of iptables, though the kernel itself hasn't dropped support for the latter.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In any case, this doesn't affect the stable release of WSL2 right now, so if you're using that, then it's business as usual. If you're on the pre-release version, and you have been having troubles, then you'll probably want to hit the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases" href="https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">GitHub page</a> and grab the latest release.

	<span style="font-size:20px;">The new category view in the Windows 11 Start menu needs more time in the oven.</span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>What you need to know</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Microsoft is working on a category view within the Windows 11 Start menu.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		The view groups apps in a way similar to what's seen on smartphones running iOS or Android.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		The new feature has not been announced by Microsoft and requires a third-party tool to enable it, so you can expect some bugs if you do try it.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Once the new feature rolls out, it appears that you'll be able to toggle between Alphabetical, Grid, and Category views within the Start menu.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A new category view is in the works for the Windows 11 Start menu. While Microsoft has not announced the new feature, the option can be enabled through third-party tools if you're running Windows 11 build 22635.4010, which shipped to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel recently.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The change was spotted by X user phantomofearth, who also shared a video of the feature in action.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Category view works in a similar way to how apps are organized on iOS or Android. App icons appear within subsections, making it easier to find specific apps. The view differs from using folders, since Windows 11 groups the apps automatically and in a different type of grid.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedOther" contenteditable="false">
	<iframe allowfullscreen="" data-controller="core.front.core.autosizeiframe" data-embedid="embed6822587488" src="https://nsaneforums.com/index.php?app=core&amp;module=system&amp;controller=embed&amp;url=https://twitter.com/phantomofearth/status/1821960936355201521?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1821960936355201521%257Ctwgr%255E79cadba36c7c458539688c34686847ae2a88a262%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url=https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-still-has-time-to-fix-this-hideous-start-menu-update"></iframe>
</div>

<p>
	The general concept of category view seems to work well, but I think the design needs refinement. Icons don't look natural within their grid layout and hover effects still seem to be a bit off. Since Microsoft has not even announced the feature yet, there is still plenty of time to refine its design and make improvements. Presumably, category view will also go through the Windows Insider Program, giving Microsoft more chances to receive feedback.

</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<span style="font-size:12px;"><em>The fact that you cannot disable the Recommended section of the Start menu is one of many issues brought up by Windows 11 users. (Image credit: Future)</em></span>
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">

</p>

<p>
	The Windows 11 Start menu has received criticism since its early days. Design preference is subjective, of course, but there are some common complaints about the menu. Many dislike the plethora of promoted apps and ads within the Start menu, which have only become more plentiful since the initial release of Windows 11. Others dislike the lack of customization options within the Windows 11 Start menu, often turning toward programs like Start11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft also removed some features when moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, such as the ability to move the taskbar to the top of your monitor. The tech giant also added features that few requested. For example, the notification dot in the image above isn't for anything pressing. Instead, it's a prompt to add my phone number to my Microsoft account. I'm fairly certain Microsoft already has that information somewhere, but I doubt the Start menu knows that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One comment on X made in response to the new category view in testing echoed sentiments I've seen shared several times. "Anything but removing Recommended," said Meriç Bağlayan. That comment refers to the fact that you cannot hide the Recommended section of the Start menu. Even if you disable all the content that would appear in that section, Windows 11 just wastes the space with a prompt to turn on Recommended content.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I don't hate the general concept of the Windows 11 Start menu. I'm okay with the fact that Microsoft moved away from Live Tiles and shifted toward a more launcher-like approach to opening apps. But Microsoft took out beloved features, added options few people want, reduced customization options, and refuses to address issues brought up by the community. A few design changes and customization options would go a long way for the Start menu. Until or unless those are made, at least we have a hideous version of category view to play with.
</p>

	Welcome back to our weekly look at what was added to the <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft 365 Roadmap website</a> over the past seven days. This week, the site has quite a few new additions for the List apps in Sharepoint that will be coming in the next few weeks and months.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In September. the Roadmap site <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=410768" rel="external nofollow">says the Lists app will add a new notification</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Lists forms users can subscribe to be notified of new responses on their forms. By default, this would be toggled off, but a form collaborator can toggle on and receive an email notification for every new response on that form after.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Another <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=410769" rel="external nofollow">feature that's due in September</a> will add a scheduling feature to Lists:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		List form owners and collaborators can schedule specific dates and times to start and stop accepting responses. The form will be active during the designated period and will automatically stop accepting responses once the scheduled end time is reached.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	In November, Microsoft <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=410770" rel="external nofollow">will add an attachment feature to Lists</a>:

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Users will be able to add attachment fields to enhance their list forms. This feature allows users to upload files directly to the form, providing additional context or necessary documentation.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Also in November, Lists will include <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=410771" rel="external nofollow">a new way to add branching to forms</a>:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Microsoft Lists forms will enable users to create dynamic forms featuring branching and conditional logic. This update allows users to customize their forms to display relevant questions based on conditions applied to previous responses, empowering them to design smarter forms that adapt to their data collection needs.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	In non-Lists posts on the Roadmap site, Microsoft has confirmed that it plans to add the Intelligent Recap feature in Microsoft Teams <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=New%20Last%20Week&amp;searchterms=410985" rel="external nofollow">for its Government Community Cloud High (GCC-H) customers in September</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That's it for this week's look back at the Microsoft 365 Roadmap. Come back again next Sunday to see what the site added in the next seven days.

<p>

<p>
	Google Chrome is set to disable certain extensions including the widely-used ad-blocker uBlock Origin.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This decision is part of Google's shift from Manifest V2 extensions to Manifest V3. The goal of this transition is to enhance privacy, security, and performance for users.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A Manifest is essentially a JSON file that provides crucial information about an extension such as its name, version number, and required permissions.

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Google's transition from Manifest V2 to V3</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The phaseout process for Manifest V2 extensions was announced earlier this year and began in June 2024 with the Beta, Dev, and Canary channels of Chrome.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As part of this transition, Google has already removed the "Featured" badge for Manifest V2 apps on the Chrome Web Store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	uBlock Origin users have started receiving warnings on the Chrome Web Store, stating that the extension may soon no longer be supported as it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#c0392b;">Extension changes</span></span>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>uBlock Origin's future on Chrome</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By 2025, uBlock Origin on Chrome will cease to exist in its current form. Users will need to switch to alternatives like Firefox or Brave for advanced ad-blocking capabilities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google has stated that users can re-enable disabled extensions initially but this option will gradually be removed from Chrome.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Enterprises using the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy will not be affected by this change until June 2025.
</p>

<p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>New solution for users introduced</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In response to these changes, the developers of uBlock Origin have introduced a new version called uBlock Origin Lite.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This streamlined version complies with Manifest V3 requirements but lacks some features of its predecessor such as custom filters and element picker and zapper modes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Despite these limitations, it effectively blocks ads on platforms like YouTube making it suitable for casual browsing or streaming.

	Apple has become more committed to building a stronger Google Maps alternative, and the company has been working on multiple fronts to improve its offering.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	Apple Maps has received several notable updates in the last few years, starting with the detailed city experience – announced in 2022 but whose rollout still happens slowly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The most recent big update is the release of Apple Maps on the web, which is Apple's first effort to make its platform available outside the Apple ecosystem. With this release, the mapping service goes live on non-Apple devices, as anyone with a PC, be it Windows or Mac, could access the maps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple Maps on the web launch with exclusive support for Safari, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge (which is based on Chromium, the engine powering Google Chrome, so Apple Maps technically supported just two browsers).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, Apple has been working on expanding the support for Apple Maps on the web, and this week, the company added Firefox to the list.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you're a tech-savvy person, you certainly heard of Firefox. Often considered the only potent alternative to the invasion of Chromium-powered browsers (such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, and Opera), Firefox still commands an important market share in the browser space.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple allows Firefox users to access Apple Maps on the web on Windows, Mac, and iPad. Obviously, while Firefox is also available on iPhones, Apple doesn't offer support for Apple Maps on the web because the service comes with a dedicated application on the smartphone.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is the first update for Apple Maps on the web and is almost insignificant, not only because the Firefox market share is not that big and users could still access the service by changing the user agent. In other words, no matter what browser you use, you should still be able to access Apple Maps on the web by changing the user agent, albeit official support means you are less likely to encounter bugs and other performance issues.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, the service still lacks essential features, such as support for logging in with an Apple ID. While users can configure routes on the web, they can't transfer the data to their smartphones or CarPlay because they can't log in with an Apple account. Apple will likely expand the feature lineup with more options, and I'm certain the iPhone event next month will witness the unveiling of a more important update for the web.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple has yet to announce an Android version of Apple Maps, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the company exploring this space. Apple Maps needs more users, as keeping the app limited to the Apple ecosystem blocks its attempt to become a cross-platform Google Maps alternative.
</p>

	A few weeks ago, sharp-eyed Windows enthusiasts discovered that Microsoft was working on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-start-menu-may-soon-get-a-big-update-with-ios-like-app-categories/" rel="external nofollow">a brand-new view for the Start menu</a>. It would allow you to sort installed apps by category, creating a launcher similar to that in iOS.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new Category view was initially uncovered in a non-working state, but now, with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/kb5041869-microsoft-restores-simplified-windows-11-system-tray-after-removing-it/" rel="external nofollow">the latest Windows 11 Beta build</a>, every insider can try the new Start menu mode. Although it works, Microsoft has yet to announce the update, so getting it to work requires some tinkering with third-party apps (you may as well encounter some bugs and rough surfaces).

		Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the <strong>CD</strong> command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type <strong>CD C:\Vive</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Type <strong>vivetool /enable /id:<strong>49221331,</strong>47205210,48433719</strong> and press <strong>Enter</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Restart your computer.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Note that the Category view won't replace the default section with your pins. To access app categories in the Start menu, click All Apps and select "Category" next to "All apps."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As of right now, there is no official information on how this feature works. However, users discovered that Windows sorts apps in a JSON file, so how the new Category view will work with apps outside the Microsoft Store (which is the vast majority of Windows apps) remains an open question. Hopefully, Microsoft will soon give us the answers.

<p>
	Microsoft is slowing down in getting rid of Paint 3D.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to leaker phantonofearth on X, Microsoft is currently displaying a banner within the app indicating that it will no longer receive updates and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, just a few months from now.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The screenshot, initially spotted by XDA Developers, doesn’t provide any additional information, and Microsoft itself has yet to make any formal announcement about the app’s demise.

<p>
	Paint 3D was initially launched back in 2017 and was launched with the Windows 10 Creators Update. The app combines Microsoft Paint and 3D Builder applications to create a hybrid 2D-3D editing experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The app was briefly a replacement for Microsoft Paint; however, after a number of users complained about the different interface and missing features, Microsoft ultimately decided to let both Microsoft Paint and Microsoft Paint 3D coexist.

	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>The OS, though still technically demanding, has left behind its highly terminal-dependent usage. The HUD is now easy to understand and the UX is completely different, being visual-driven and very user-friendly </strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>The first time I heard of Linux, it was like discovering an uncharted area filled with unknown organisms. Being a Microsoft Windows fanatic since the start, I was quite reluctant to use that line of OS because it felt more technically demanding and somewhat clunky with a scattered HUD and UX.</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now this happened around 2008-2009; that is history.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So when I heard about the buzz around Linux again recently, it had me wondering, albeit remaining quite cynical given the past experience. Not saying that the OS did not change but so did Windows.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As a matter of fact, Windows became very well known for its simplified UX. Linux on the other hand, was not as largely used or talked about, staying behind the curtain. But after deciding to lift that veil I was not surprised — I was shocked. This is a whole new version of Linux I did not imagine to witness.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Do not get me wrong, the OS is still technically demanding and can be a little daunting for an absolute beginner.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But for any intuitive computer enthusiast, the HUD is now easy to understand and the UX is completely different, being visual driven and very user-friendly, given the user knows what and where they want their stuff.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The accessibilities has become more polished with dedicated softwares for creative content which I would have to pay a hefty money for using on Windows. And more importantly, the OS now supports virtually all kinds of video games. For someone who prefers PC gaming over everything, this meant the whole world.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Take Mint Linux for example. The OS comes equipped with Gimp, a software for 3D work with Blender as well as Inkscape for vector graphics. The OS houses browser options like Opera GX, Brave and Chrome for smooth browsing and LibreOffice provides everything one can ask for from Windows Office 360, and perhaps more. These are features which are very much exclusive to Linux and are very expensive for Windows, being third-party applications. Linux, once known for being a rigid programming OS, now facilitates softwares like Steam for video games.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By this point, Linux has basically made itself a stern competitor of Windows. So let us take a look at why and buckle up because this will be technical.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, early versions of Linux were primarily used by technical enthusiasts, drawn to its open-source nature and potential for customisation. However, the inherent limitations of the time hindered its mainstream adoption. The lack of a unified desktop environment, limited hardware support, and a perceived lack of user-friendliness posed significant barriers to entry for the average user.
</p>

<p>
	The turning point arrived with the emergence of the GNU/Linux ecosystem. This development saw the integration of GNU tools, a collection of free software utilities, with the Linux kernel. This provided a robust foundation for a fully functional operating system, addressing the deficiencies of earlier versions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Subsequently, the introduction of desktop environments like GNOME and KDE in the late 1990s revolutionised the user experience. These graphical interfaces offered a user-friendly alternative to the command-line interface, attracting a broader audience beyond the technical elite.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And that is the first standout feature of the new and improved Linux. The open-source nature allows users to freely modify, adapt, and redistribute the code, fostering a vibrant community of developers and fostering innovation. This leads to a wider range of software and tools, often tailored to specific needs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Secondly, robust security is a key advantage. Linux's design emphasises security with its kernel architecture and community-driven security updates, resulting in fewer vulnerabilities and malware threats.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Thirdly, the command-line interface provides a powerful way to interact with the system, enabling automation, scripting, and advanced system management. This empowers users with greater control and efficiency.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Meanwhile, on the desktop front, Linux continued to evolve, with distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora gaining popularity among individual users. These distributions simplified the installation process, offered a more user-friendly interface, and provided access to a wide range of applications catering to diverse needs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The adoption of Linux on the desktop was further boosted by the rise of the free software movement, which emphasised the ethical implications of software ownership and promoted the use of open-source alternatives to proprietary software.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In recent years, Linux has experienced a resurgence in popularity, largely due to the increasing demand for alternative operating systems. This surge can be attributed to concerns over privacy, security, and the perceived bloatware present in proprietary operating systems like Windows.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux, with its focus on user freedom, security, and a vast array of open-source applications, has emerged as a compelling alternative, particularly among users seeking a more transparent and customizable computing experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The increasing adoption of cloud computing has also played a significant role in the rise of Linux. Cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure primarily rely on Linux for their infrastructure, further expanding its reach and solidifying its position as a leading operating system in the modern technological landscape.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Linux has undoubtedly made substantial progress in its journey to mainstream adoption, it still faces challenges. One major hurdle is the lack of a unified platform. The fragmentation of Linux distributions, each with its own unique set of features and packages, can be daunting for new users. Addressing this issue, while preserving the diversity of the Linux ecosystem, remains a critical task for the future.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another challenge is the limited hardware support for some Linux distributions. While progress has been made in this area, certain hardware components, particularly proprietary drivers, may still pose compatibility issues. Efforts to enhance hardware compatibility and reduce driver dependencies are crucial to further expanding Linux's reach.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Linux's journey from a humble hobbyist project to a major player in the operating system market is a testament to its adaptability, community-driven development, and user-centric approach.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As technology continues to evolve, Linux is well-positioned to further solidify its position as a powerful, reliable, and secure platform for individuals and businesses alike, challenging the dominance of traditional operating systems and ushering in a new era of open and collaborative computing.
</p>

	Back in 2016, Microsoft was all about 3D. It revealed its HoloLens technology, and it wanted its software to offer 3D features as well. That's why the company launched a revamp of its <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/paint-3d-an-old-friend-with-a-new-dimension-bringing-3d-to-everyone/" rel="external nofollow">Paint app for Windows 10 as Paint 3D in October 2016</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Instead of just creating 2D artwork like what you would make on the older Paint app, Microsoft wanted anyone to create 3D artwork with this new app. Indeed, it was initially designed to completely replace the older Paint app for Windows 10.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the reception to the new Paint 3D app did not go as well as expected, and Microsoft continued to support the older Paint app alongside Paint 3D. In 2021, the release of Windows 10 build 21332 <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-build-21332-removes-3d-viewer-and-paint-3d-on-clean-installs/" rel="external nofollow">removed Paint 3D from clean installs of the OS</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, it looks like the end is finally in sight for the Paint 3D app, three years after it was removed from new Windows 10 installs. As <a href="https://x.com/phantomofearth/status/1822131761481925046" rel="external nofollow">posted by X user @phantomofearth,</a> anyone who still runs the app will now see a banner on top. It states that Paint 3D will no longer be available to download from the Microsoft Store after November 4. Updates for the app will also end on that day as well.

<p>
	The retirement of Paint 3D comes even as Microsoft has been adding new features for the regular Paint app for Windows 10 and 11. Members of the Windows Insider Program have been able to check out new functions in recent months. They have included a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/better-layers-brushes-and-more-are-a-part-of-the-new-windows-11-paint-update/" rel="external nofollow">new size slider for pencils, brushes, and eraser tools</a>, along with some <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-insiders-are-getting-new-paint-and-store-updates-today/" rel="external nofollow">new features for its pen and eraser options</a>.

	<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>You don't have to throw away a perfectly good PC just because it doesn't meet Microsoft's strict Windows 11 compatibility standards. Here's how you can work around the restrictions and safely upgrade a Windows 10 PC. </strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop delivering security updates to your Windows 10 PC unless you're willing to pay an exorbitant price to join the Extended Security Updates program.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you try to upgrade to Windows 11 on a PC over a few years old, you'll be told, in no uncertain terms, that your old PC doesn't qualify, because its CPU isn't on the official list of compatible processors. Microsoft has made it abundantly clear that it will not revise those requirements. You will also hit roadblocks if your PC doesn't have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While that might be the official policy, as with everything Windows-related, it pays to read the fine print.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Those pesky restrictions prevent you from automatically upgrading to Windows 11 using Windows Update or the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Yet there are two fully supported workarounds, as I document in ZDNET's Windows 11 FAQ.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you're willing to perform a clean installation of Windows 11, you can boot from installation media and run Windows Setup. That option skips the CPU compatibility check completely. After the installation completes, you'll need to reinstall all your apps, restore your data files, and tweak settings to personalize your system preferences.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Want to avoid all that hassle? Follow these four steps.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:24px;"><strong>How to upgrade your old 'incompatible' PC to Windows 11</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>1. Change one key in the Windows registry</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You need to make one small change to the Windows registry, as documented in this Microsoft support document. This change tells the Windows 11 Setup program to skip the check for compatible CPUs and to allow installation on a PC with an older TPM (version 1.2). The usual warnings apply when working with the registry, of course, and I recommend you make a complete backup before proceeding.
</p>

<p>
	Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following key:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Select that key and then right-click in any empty space in the pane on the right. Choose the option to create a new DWORD value, AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU, and set its value to 1. The result should look like this:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<img alt="override-compatibility-check-windows11.j" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="75.10" height="389" width="720" src="https://www.zdnet.com/a/img/resize/ef2e3bdcce8e36f27453187729046e689c291cda/2022/04/09/6f063136-4e4f-4669-a37f-124401072378/override-compatibility-check-windows11.jpg?auto=webp&amp;width=1280" />
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Use this registry tweak to override the Windows 11 CPU and TPM compatibility checks.<br />
	Screenshot by Ed Bott/ZDNET</em></span>
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">

</p>

<p>
	Click OK to save your change.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>2. Download the Windows 11 ISO</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On the PC you want to upgrade, go to the Windows 11 Download page (aka.ms/DownloadWindows11) and choose the option at the bottom of the page, "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices." Save the ISO file in your Downloads folder.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Note that this is a big file. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, the download could take a while.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>3. Mount the ISO file in File Explorer</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After the download completes, open File Explorer and double-click the ISO file. Doing so mounts the file as a virtual DVD drive in its own folder.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<span style="font-size:22px;"><strong>4. Run Windows Setup</strong></span>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In File Explorer, find the Setup.exe file and double-click it to begin the upgrade. You'll see a stern warning about compatibility issues, but after you click OK on that dialog box, your upgrade should proceed without any serious issues. You'll have three options: you can keep your apps, settings, and files (Full Upgrade); keep your data files but start fresh with apps and settings (Keep Data Only); or start completely fresh (Clean Install).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you want more control over the upgrade process and aren't afraid to mess with creating custom installation media, you can use the free, open-source utility Rufus. My ZDNET colleague Lance Whitney has the full details in "How to install Windows 11 the way you want (and sneak by Microsoft's restrictions)."
