	Microsoft recently held <a href="https://youtu.be/43rwZpcKtCA" rel="external nofollow">a community call</a> to talk about various developer instruments available on Windows 10 and 11. The Dev Home app is one of those tools, and it has received an update to version 0.17. It introduces a new way to arrange widgets for better accessibility and the option to configure an environment on the Environments page.

	The Document Foundation (TDF) has released a new major version of <a href="https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/08/22/libreoffice-248/" rel="external nofollow">LibreOffice, version 24.8</a>. For those who are a bit confused as to why a point-8 release is considered major and not minor, it's because the project switched to a new version numbering system. 24.8 signifies that this version was released in the eighth month - August - in 2024.

<p>
	One of the main new features in this update pertains to privacy. You can now go to Tools &gt; Options &gt; LibreOffice &gt; Security &gt; Options and enable Remove personal information on saving. This prevents personal information from being exported, such as author names and timestamps, editing duration, printer name and config, document template, author and date for comments, and tracked changes.

	You can download LibreOffice 24.8 now from the <a href="https://www.libreoffice.org/download/" rel="external nofollow">LibreOffice download page</a>. The minimum requirements are Windows 7 SP1 and macOS 10.15. Linux users should stick to whichever version of LibreOffice is in their repositories for the best experience, although they can upgrade. If you are on LibreOffice 24.2, you can stay on that version, too, as fixes are being backported to it.

	Google's <a href="https://blog.google/products/google-play/google-essentials-windows-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> a new application called Google Essentials, headed to Windows PCs, that will bundle its suite of apps and services. The software provides users with a single place to discover and install core Google services directly from the Start menu.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google Essentials lets users easily install some of the more popular apps, including <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-play-is-coming-to-windows-10-and-11-next-year-as-hell-freezes-over/" rel="external nofollow">Google Play Games</a>, Photos, and Messages. The former can actually let users play thousands of mobile and PC titles in the Google Play Store, where progress is saved across devices. Photos and Messages make it easier than ever to view photo albums or reply to texts from any computer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		For example, from Google Essentials or HP’s OMEN Gaming Hub, you’ll be able to access thousands of mobile and native PC games from Google Play Games, such as Clash of Clans and CookieRun: Tower of Adventures. Signing in to your Play Games account allows you to sync your in-game progress and reward benefits for certain titles, so you can pick things back up whether you’re on an Android device or PC.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	It also offers you productivity tools like Google Drive, Docs, and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-calendar-upgrades-syncing-experience-with-microsoft-outlook-and-others/" rel="external nofollow">Calendar with shortcuts</a> for quick file access, editing, and sharing, or coordination of schedules without moving between browsers. Other perks include eligible Google One subscribers gaining a two-month trial of 100GB of cloud storage.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google Essentials will come pre-installed on every new HP consumer and gaming laptop range, including Spectre, Envy, Pavilion, OMEN, and Victus. The company also stated it plans to expand the app to more devices from other OEMs in the coming months.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, Google noted that users would have full control over their experience and could uninstall any Google service - or Google Essentials altogether - at any time.

	The <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11s-ai-explorer-debuts-as-recall-a-feature-that-remembers-everything-you-do/" rel="external nofollow">controversial Recall feature</a> for Windows 11 devices labeled as Copilot+ PCs was supposed to launch alongside those laptops in June. However, at the last minute, the Recall feature, which was supposed to track everything you did on your PC so you could literally recall almost anything, first got changed <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-gives-in-makes-recall-an-opt-in-feature-and-introduces-new-privacy-measures/" rel="external nofollow">to an "opt-in" experience</a> and then was <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-delays-the-launch-of-recall-for-copilot-pcs-theres-no-word-on-a-new-date/" rel="external nofollow">removed completely from the first wave of Copilot+ PCs.</a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On June 13, Microsoft said that in order to address concerns about the security and safety of Recall, it would "shift from a preview experience" over "to a preview available first in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Today, <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2024/06/07/update-on-the-recall-preview-feature-for-copilot-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft updated that initial announcement</a> with news about when Recall would be available for members of the Windows Insider Program. It stated:

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		With a commitment to delivering a trustworthy and secure Recall (preview) experience on Copilot+ PCs for customers, we’re sharing an update that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders starting in October. As previously shared on June 13, we have adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of our Windows Insider community prior to making Recall available for all Copilot+ PCs. Security continues to be our top priority and when Recall is available for Windows Insiders in October we will publish a blog with more details.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft had previously added some hidden Recall features and improvements<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-recall-quietly-gets-a-feature-that-lets-you-quickly-analyze-what-is-on-screen/" rel="external nofollow"> in a Canary Channel build of Windows 11 in June</a>. Data miners found a new Recall home page design, along with improvements with Copilot integration and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's possible more hidden Recall features will show up in future Insider builds of Windows 11 before the feature finally becomes available to those testers sometime in October. It could be months before Recall is officially added to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs outside the Insider program.

Now, Microsoft has officially acknowledged the problem and promised to investigate and fix it.

<p>

<p>
	A notification posted in the official Windows documentation confirmed that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-patch-tuesday-update-out-now-for-23h2-22h2-kb5041585-and-21h2-kb5041592/" rel="external nofollow">installing the August 2024 Patch Tuesday updates</a> results in the following error message when attempting to launch Linux on a dual-boot system:

<p>
	The source of this problem is a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) setting for blocking old and vulnerable boot managers. It was not intended to land on dual-boot systems, but as it sometimes happens in the world of Microsoft, it somehow did. The company says that happened because of failed dual-boot detection:

	When AMD released its Zen 5-based Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors, it claimed to deliver an impressive <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-launches-ryzen-9950x-9900x-9700x-9600x-powered-by-massive-16-ipc-boosted-zen-5/" rel="external nofollow">16% IPC (instructions per clock/cycle) boost</a>. This was a great opportunity for AMD, given how rival Intel is currently <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/asus-msi-bios-updates-for-intel-13th-14th-gen-unstable-crashing-cpus-now-rolling-out/" rel="external nofollow">struggling with CPU stability issues</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Unfortunately, AMD just could not capitalize on the situation, it seemed, as most of the independent third-party tech media community felt the performance uplift on Ryzen 9000 was not enough compared to Zen 4-based Ryzen 7000 series CPUs for it to be considered a generational uplift worthy of an upgrade.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Comparative performance testing between Windows 11 24H2 and Linux (Nobara) also revealed that the latter generally came out on top much more often <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/switching-to-linux-from-windows-11-24h2-for-performance-could-be-wiser-on-amd-ryzen-9000/" rel="external nofollow">in gaming as well as other workloads</a>, we guessed that perhaps Windows needed more optimization; and our speculation turned out to be right as AMD did confirm later that this was indeed the case and in order to bypass the performance bug, the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-hidden-admin-account-apparently-boosting-amd-ryzen-90007000-performance/" rel="external nofollow">hidden Windows Admin account was summoned</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	AMD had promised that it was working on a fix and today, it has revealed more details about its upcoming performance patch. The company essentially says that Windows 11 24H2 in its current state (without the Admin account) is unable to properly utilize the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-launches-ryzen-9950x-9900x-9700x-9600x-powered-by-massive-16-ipc-boosted-zen-5/#:~:text=to%20upgrades%20to-,branch%20prediction,-accuracy%20and%20latency" rel="external nofollow">wider branch prediction</a> capabilities of the Zen 5 architecture.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those not familiar, branch prediction in CPUs helps minimize branch misprediction penalties and is especially useful in highly pipelined processor designs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		The “Zen 5” architecture incorporates a wider branch prediction capacity than prior “Zen” generations. Our automated test methodology was run in “Admin” mode which produced results that reflect branch prediction code optimizations not present in the version of Windows reviewers used to test Ryzen 9000 Series.

	</p>

	<p>

		"Zen 5" will see the biggest boost, but this Windows update will improve performance for "Zen 4" and "Zen 3" as well. We're collaborating with Microsoft to roll out this optional update to all Windows 11 users soon.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	AMD has also provided a few examples of the improvement it is expecting post-patch. Using a Ryzen 9950X, the company expects to see the biggest gain in <em>Far Cry 6</em> with an uplift of 13%. <em>FC 6</em> is a single-thread heavy title indicating that users may see some nice single-core boosts. <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> and UL Procyon Office test also see decent gains of 7% and 6% respectively.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You may find more details about the upcoming patch <a href="https://community.amd.com/t5/gaming/ryzen-9000-series-community-update-gaming-performance/ba-p/704054" rel="external nofollow">here</a> on its official blog post on AMD's website.

	While Microsoft keeps testing and adding <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/windows_11_features/" rel="external nofollow">new features to Windows</a>, it also keeps shedding stuff the company feels is no longer necessary. These are added to the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/deprecated_features/" rel="external nofollow">list of deprecated Windows features</a>, and the most recent one on this list is Paint 3D which, the company announced, will <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-retiring-the-paint-3d-windows-app-on-november-4/" rel="external nofollow">soon be dead</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Similar to Paint 3D, which Microsoft had seemingly hoped to kill off sooner, the Windows Control Panel is a feature that the tech giant has been wanting to deprecate for a while.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first such reports started surfacing back in 2011 when a leaked Windows 8 screenshot suggested that Microsoft was looking to replace the Control Panel with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-metro-to-change-control-panel-to-pc-settings/" rel="external nofollow">"PC settings"</a>. This Settings option was made with touch-friendliness in mind though the Control Panel continued to co-exist still.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Later in 2015, it was rumored that the company may finally do away with it as a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-control-panel-may-soon-disappear-in-future-windows-10-builds/" rel="external nofollow">senior Microsoft official confirmed</a> that "Settings will eventually supersede Control Panel." However, the application continued to persist still as some of the things had not been moved over.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although that was said by a Microsoft employee nearly a decade ago, the company itself never published anything such on its official site until just a few days ago.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On a new support page about the various native Windows configuration tools that we have covered in detail in <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-details-regedit-group-policy-editor-and-more-native-windows-1110-config-tools/" rel="external nofollow">this dedicated article</a>, Microsoft has finally stated that the Control Panel is "in the process of being deprecated in favor of the Settings app".
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Additionally, the company also adds that there are certain compatibility reasons as to why the older app still exists. It <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/system-configuration-tools-in-windows-f8a49657-b038-43b8-82d3-28bea0c5666b" rel="external nofollow">writes</a>:

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

	<p>
		<strong>Tip</strong>: while the Control Panel still exists for compatibility reasons and to provide access to some settings that have not yet migrated, you're encouraged to use the Settings app, whenever possible.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	For those who may not be aware, the Control Panel was first introduced to Windows in 1985 with version 1.0. If you are curious to know more about the early days of Windows, you can read about it in our dedicated <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-quick-look-back-at-the-actual-launch-of-microsoft-windows-101-38-years-ago-today/" rel="external nofollow">"look back" piece</a> we did last year.

	Windows users, especially those who are enthusiasts or power users, like to tweak and tinker around the OS. There are several third-party applications that allow users to do so but Windows itself offers quite a few native, built-in apps and utilities that are quite rich in terms of functionalities.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While most users who are well-acquainted with the Windows OS are well aware of these, Microsoft understands that not everyone is as savvy as others. The company has thus published a new support page on its official website detailing all these applications giving users a brief idea of what they do and how they can be accessed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The list starts with the Settings app which is the most common place where users can tweak how things are set up on their PC. Microsoft has also defined it as the "main application to customize and manage Windows settings," and that is certainly true given that most of the basic Windows management options can be found here.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		To open Settings you can use one of the following methods:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<p>
				Right-click on Start and select <strong>Settings</strong>
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Use the keyboard shortcut +<span class="ocpUserInput">I</span>
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Use the following link:
			</p>

			<p>

			</p>

			<p>
				<a class="ocpExternalLink supLinkButton" href="ms-settings:" target="_blank" rel="">Settings</a>
			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Following Settings, we have Task Manager which helps users monitor the resource usage of their systems, ie, CPU, RAM, GPU usages, among others, although it can be inaccurate sometimes due to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-cpu-usage-reporting-is-apparently-buggy-including-on-task-manager/" rel="external nofollow">some underlying bugs</a>. It also helps to deal with apps that run when Windows starts. Task Manager also has an "Open Resource Monitor" option which provides greater insight into system monitoring.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		To open the Task Manager, you can use one of the following methods:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>

				Right-click on Start and select <strong>Task Manager</strong>
			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Use the keyboard shortcut <span class="ocpUserInput">CTRL+SHIFT+ESC</span>
			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Up next, we have Computer Management which comprises several other options like Device Manager, Disk Management, Event Viewer and more, making it perhaps the most comprehensive system component management application available on Windows.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		To open the Computer Management console, you can use one of the following methods:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>

			</p>
		</li>

			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Use the keyboard shortcut +<span class="ocpUserInput">R</span>, type <span class="ocpUserInput">compmgmt.msc</span> and press <span class="ocpUserInput">Enter</span>
			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Following that, Microsoft talks about Event Viewer, which provides detailed entries and logs of Windows services and processes, as well as other apps. The tech giant also mentions the Control Panel though it has also <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-finally-officially-confirms-its-killing-windows-control-panel-sometime-soon/" rel="external nofollow">finally offered confirmation</a> that it is heading for deprecation and will not be around for longer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	System Configuration follows next and is another major utility that helps set up Windows to our liking. Similar to Task Manager which allows us to tweak the startup apps, System Configuration has the option to tinker around with certain boot-related settings like choosing the kind of Startup we want or the boot drive.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		To open System Configuration, you can use one of the following methods:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>

			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	System Information is up next and as the name suggests, it allows users to check details about the hardware and the other various component information that the PC has. Using "msinfo32" the System Information app can be launched.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Following System Information, Microsoft lists probably the two of the most powerful utilities on Windows, the Registry Editor and the Local Group Policy Editor. This is also why there is a big wall of text that cautions users against tinkering with these settings if they are not familiar.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Registry is essentially a Windows database that stores the various configuration settings for the OS and apps. It was introduced with Windows NT and replaced most of the text-based INI and/or BAT files that were used in earlier versions of Windows like Windows 3.x and MS-DOS configuration files, such as the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a way, the Local Group Policy Editor is quite similar to the Registry Editor as the former is used to manage various local group policy object (GPO) settings.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		To open the Registry Editor, you can use one of the following methods:

			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft has ended its list with Advanced System Settings which allows users to access additional settings that are not available under Control Panel or the Settings app. As the name suggests, it is mostly useful to advanced users or IT professionals.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

<p>
	Microsoft is back with its annual Windows 11 feature update, this time focusing on the underlying platform and surface-level quality-of-life improvements and updates. Version 24H2 (also known as the 2024 Update) includes everything from better performance to UX changes designed to make Windows 11 easier to use.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In my opinion, the 2024 Update is a bigger release compared to the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-version-23h2-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-version-23h2-review" rel="external nofollow">2023 Update</a>, thanks to those underlying platform enhancements alone. We have improvements to Windows Update, a faster x86 emulation layer for Arm PCs, and new AI features that benefit from having a dedicated <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/what-is-npu-vs-gpu" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/what-is-npu-vs-gpu" rel="external nofollow">NPU (neural processing unit.)</a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This release of Windows 11 is also unique as it's the first version to ship with features that are exclusive to a new type of Windows device: <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/-microsoft-copilot-plus-faq" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/-microsoft-copilot-plus-faq" rel="external nofollow">Copilot+ PCs</a>. If you're not using a Copilot+ PC, you will miss out on some features when upgrading to version 24H2, including the controversial "Windows Recall" AI feature.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I've been using Windows 11 version 24H2 since June 18, and this is my full review. Please note that due to the nature of how Microsoft updates Windows these days, you may already have several of the features detailed in this review without updating to version 24H2. Alternatively, you may update to version 24H2 and be missing some of the features outlined in this review. It's potluck, I'm afraid.

			The Windows 11 2024 Update is rather unique in its rollout and availability. Unlike previous versions of Windows 11, this release is rolling out in two notable waves. The first wave is already shipping, but <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/preorders-for-microsofts-surface-pro-and-laptop-copilot-ai-powered-pcs-are-live-and-start-at-dollar99999-heres-where-to-buy" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/surface/preorders-for-microsofts-surface-pro-and-laptop-copilot-ai-powered-pcs-are-live-and-start-at-dollar99999-heres-where-to-buy" rel="external nofollow">only on new Copilot+ PCs</a> that launched on June 18. If you recently purchased a new Snapdragon X laptop, you are already running version 24H2.

		<p>
			For everybody else, you are not yet eligible for the Windows 11 2024 Update. Version 24H2 for non-Copilot+ PCs is expected to begin rolling out in waves starting in late September, which is when Windows 11 feature updates normally begin rolling out to users.

				<p>
					As seems to be the case with every new version of Windows these days, Microsoft has made further improvements and changes to the Start menu and Taskbar on Windows 11 with version 24H2. In this update, Microsoft is adding a new <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-phone-link-is-the-best-new-windows-feature-of-the-past-decade" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-phone-link-is-the-best-new-windows-feature-of-the-past-decade" rel="external nofollow">Phone Link</a> companion that floats alongside the usual Start menu interface, showing you a quick overview of your phone's status and recent photos.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Microsoft has also made some changes to the Recommended area Start, which now groups recently installed apps into a single item that you can click into to see all the recently installed programs. It also now shows "frequently used apps" along with "Recommended" apps and websites Microsoft thinks you might want to try.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					I've personally not seen any Recommended apps just yet, but the grouping of recently installed apps along with frequently used apps is a nice addition that I have found myself enjoying.
				</p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Moving onto the Taskbar, Microsoft is making several changes and improvements in this department, starting with the system tray. Beginning with version 24H2, Microsoft has "simplified" the system tray layout. It no longer shows the full date and time format; instead, it opts for a simplified date/time layout that drops the AM/PM indicator and year. It also now hides the bell icon unless Do Not Disturb is enabled.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							As a self-proclaimed minimalist, I really like this change. It makes the system tray feel cleaner and less cluttered, removing unuseful information such as the year. I already know what year it is, so I don't need to see it in the system tray. If you're not like me and dislike these changes, you can revert to the old system tray layout that includes the year and bell icon.

									<em><span>The Quick Settings menu has been rebuilt from the ground up. </span><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Microsoft has also updated the Quick Settings panel on version 24H2, rebuilding it from the ground up to be faster and easier to customize. Now, the quick settings are paginated, operating much like the quick settings interface on your Android phone. Just click and drag on icons to rearrange them, moving lesser-used icons into overflow pages.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									One downside to this change is that you can no longer hide icons you don't intend to use. All available quick settings now exist in the menu, forcing you to manually move down quick setting buttons you don't use to the back of the grid layout. The previous version of Windows 11 had the ability to show and hide specific quick settings, and now that's gone.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Last but not least, in a little detail that I can't help but appreciate; the Wi-Fi icon will now animate when it's attempting to connect to a network. Lovely.

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											Microsoft has made several quality-of-life updates to the File Explorer on Windows 11 with version 24H2. Starting with context menus, Microsoft has finally fixed them. When Windows 11 first debuted, it introduced a new modern context menu that hid legacy options and reorganized the layout. While the effort was commendable, some of the design changes they made were also rather questionable.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<p>
											Specifically, common actions such as cut, copy, paste, and rename were placed in a row of small icons without labels. All the other options were placed vertically with labels, and this layout made things very confusing and difficult to find as it's not immediately clear which non-labeled icon does what.
										</p>

										<p>

										</p>

										<div>
											<div>

													<img alt="Windows 11 24H2" class="ipsImage" height="720" width="720" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eqpM4XBHY9hzgtTezPCa5P.jpg">
												</p>

												<p>
													<em><span>The context menu layout has been redone, and it's now easier to use. </span><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
												</p>

												<p>

												</p>

												<p>
													Microsoft clearly heard the feedback here, as with version 24H2, it has finally "fixed" the modern context menus. Now, those common actions show up at the very top of the context menu, still in a horizontal row might I add, but in a much bigger size <em>and</em> with labels. It's now easy and quick to select the action you're likely looking for.
												</p>

												<p>

												</p>

												<p>
													Moving onto the File Explorer itself, version 24H2 finally adds the ability to create additional archive format types. With version 23H2, Microsoft added the ability to extract 7-zip and TAR files natively within File Explorer, but it didn't add the ability to create them. Now, File Explorer supports creating .7z and .TAR files just like .ZIP files.
												</p>

												<p>

												</p>

												<p>
													There's even a more advanced interface that lets you customize the type of compression you wish to use when selecting .7z or .TAR, but annoyingly, this throws you into a legacy Windows interface that doesn't adhere to dark mode at all. Why Microsoft didn't put in the extra effort to build a modern interface for this, I don't know, but I wish they had.
												</p>

												<p>

												</p>

												<div>
													<div>

															<img alt="Windows 11 24H2" class="ipsImage" height="720" width="720" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/niB6s32i36zo7Eda2EtGGP.jpg">

														<p>
															<em><span>You have additional archive formats with options for compression levels. </span><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															Another little improvement that Microsoft has added to the File Explorer is the ability to drag files between directories using the breadcrumbs in the address bar. This functionality existed before Windows 11's new File Explorer landed, and Microsoft is now adding it back.
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															Lastly, Microsoft has also updated the homepage of File Explorer with a new shared view, which gives an overview of all the activity ongoing in files that you've shared with colleagues, friends, or family. This is an interface you'll most likely see on your work PC.
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															Now, it wouldn't be a Windows 11 review if I didn't provide an update on the state of dark mode. Microsoft introduced dark mode in Windows with the Windows 10 November 2015 update almost ten years ago. To this day, it's still incomplete, and version 24H2 does nothing to improve this.
														</p>

														<p>

														</p>

														<p>
															File properties, the Run dialog, the Registry, the copy file dialog, and many more interfaces still do not support dark mode. It's almost as if Microsoft isn't actually working to improve this, and that's a shame.

																<p>
																	Windows 11 version 24H2 brings with it some questionable changes to the Windows Copilot experience. In previous versions of Windows, this experience operated as a sidebar that popped out from the right of the screen, pushing over open apps to make room. According to Microsoft, many people didn't like this behavior and would have preferred being able to treat it like any other app window. So, it listened.
																</p>

																<p>

																</p>

																<p>
																	Now, the Windows Copilot app is a standalone app, no longer operating in a sidebar interface. It's pinned to the Taskbar like a normal app, meaning it can now be unpinned just by right-clicking it, repositioned on the Taskbar anywhere you like, and can even be uninstalled. When opening the app, you'll notice it appears in a floating window just like any other app, and you can resize it and move it around wherever you like.

																		</p>

																		<p>
																			On paper, these changes make a lot of sense, but in practice, it makes the assistant feel very disconnected from the Windows experience. The new Copilot app is just a web app hosted by Microsoft Edge (not that the sidebar wasn't also, but at least that felt more integrated with the OS.) In fact, it's even lost the ability to control certain Windows settings. It no longer understands any Windows commands.
																		</p>

																		<p>

																		</p>

																		<p>
																			In my eyes, this new Windows Copilot is a big downgrade as a Windows assistant. It's back to simply being an online chatbot, which I personally have very little use for. I would have liked to have seen Microsoft actually integrate Copilot more closely with Windows, such as adding offline support and local commands so that it relies less upon the internet. Sadly, that hasn't happened.
																		</p>

																		<p>

																		</p>

																		<p>
																			It's not all bad news, however. The new app comes with an updated interface, which I really like. It's clean, concise, and easy to understand. On the left, you have a sidebar with all of your different chatbot conversations, with the ability to quickly create a new conversation with a single click.

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					Microsoft has made some major changes to the selection of in-box apps that ship in the default Windows 11 image with version 24H2. With this release, the following apps have been removed:
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<ul>
																					<li>
																						Windows Mail
																					</li>
																					<li>
																						Windows Calendar
																					</li>
																					<li>
																						Cortana
																					</li>
																					<li>
																						Maps
																					</li>
																					<li>
																						People
																					</li>
																					<li>
																						Movies &amp; TV
																					</li>
																					<li>
																						WordPad
																					</li>
																				</ul>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					While most of these apps are being deprecated, two of them will still be available to download via the Microsoft Store: Movies &amp; TV and Maps. The rest of them are being put to rest, as Microsoft has "modern" replacements for them that are now shipping in their place starting with this release.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					For Cortana, that's obviously Windows Copilot, even though Windows Copilot is much less capable than Cortana was as a "Windows" assistant. For WordPad, Microsoft recommends using either Notepad for basic text files or Word for more complex text documents.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					Then there's Windows Mail, Calendar, and People. The three core pillars of any modern OS platform that handles email, events, and contacts. Microsoft has replaced these apps with a single app called Outlook, built from the ground up as a new client that will also eventually replace the old classic Outlook.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					Unfortunately, the new Outlook sucks. It's a glorified web app that's much slower and heavier than the modern in-box apps it's replacing. Notifications take longer to pop up, the app itself takes at least a few seconds more to load, and it's basically impossible to use with a touchscreen.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					In my opinion, the new Outlook is not a good replacement for Windows 11's default Mail, Calendar, and People apps. It doesn't look or feel like a native Windows app, and it's not easy or enjoyable to use either. Essential apps like email and calendar should showcase the best of the native Windows app platform, not be a web app.

																						<p>
																							Elsewhere, the Photos app has gained a number of generative AI features that exist outside the exclusivity realm of Copilot+ PCs. There's a new generative erase feature that uses AI to remove blemishes and other small things from images. There are also AI-powered background replacement tools that let you add blur effects or remove the background entirely from an image in just a couple of clicks. All of these new features are super useful, and I use them all the time.
																						</p>

																						<p>

																						</p>

																						<p>
																							The Photos app now also displays quick shortcuts to other Microsoft-made creativity tools such as Designer and Clipchamp, letting you bring an image into a new project on either service.
																						</p>

																						<p>

																						</p>

																						<p>
																							Microsoft has made several improvements to the Microsoft Store app, which now separates your app library from app updates and downloads. This makes it easier to see apps you have available to install and apps that are already installed and need an update.

These are PCs that have a minimum of 16GB RAM, 256GB storage, and an NPU that can output at least 40 TOPS of power. Any PC purchased before June 18 does not meet these requirements, so you will not be able to use Windows Recall.
																										</p>

																										<p>

																										</p>

																										<p>
																											If you have a PC that meets these requirements, you will be prompted to enable Windows Recall during setup (once available). The feature is entirely optional, meaning you can choose not to enable it if you're uncomfortable with the concept for whatever reason.
																										</p>

																										<p>

																										</p>

																										<p>
																											If you choose to enable it, Microsoft has put several safeguards in place to ensure the feature is as safe to use as possible. First, when Windows Recall is collecting data, it will display a permanent icon in the System Tray on the Taskbar. This icon cannot be hidden or removed as it's designed to let you know that Recall is collecting data, and clicking it will open a flyout that lets you quickly pause Recall data collection.

																												<p>
																													Windows Recall has clearly been designed from the ground up, with privacy at the very forefront of the experience. Users have lots of control over what Windows Recall can see and for how long. Out of the box, Windows Recall cannot see any content in private web browsing sessions, and you can even blacklist your own apps and websites from being visible by Windows Recall, so if you don't want Telegram or WhatsApp to be captured, you can tell Windows Recall to ignore it.

Being able to refer back to things I did weeks ago was really helpful during my time with Windows Recall.

																														<p>
																															On that subject, how was the Windows Recall experience? In short, incredible. I personally found it game-changing; being able to essentially go back in time to see what I was looking at days or weeks ago was a productivity booster I didn't know I needed. This is the sort of feature that is hard to see as being useful until you're actively using it.
																														</p>

																														<p>

																														</p>

																														<p>
																															For example, one time during my time with Windows Recall, I was writing an article directly in the CMS and discarded a paragraph that I thought was no longer relevant to the story, only to realize later that I could have used that perfectly crafted paragraph later in the story. Thanks to Windows Recall, I was able to go back and find the point in time where I wrote that paragraph, copy it directly from the Recall app, and paste it back into the CMS.
																														</p>

																														<p>

																														</p>

																														<p>
																															The semantic search aspect of Windows Recall is also really cool. Windows uses AI to identify not just text but images and color in the snapshots it captures, so you can use descriptive language to search for things you remember seeing, even if your search criteria aren't specific.

																																<p>
																																	This means you can type "red dress with yellow handbag," and every instance where a red dress with a yellow handbag was on your screen will be shown to you. Once you find the specific red dress in question, you'll be able to reopen that webpage directly from the Windows Recall app with a single click.
																																</p>

																																<p>

																																</p>

																																<p>
																																	In my testing of the feature, I wasn't able to find a word or phrase it didn't understand. It even understood "Lumia," Microsoft's long-dead Windows Phone hardware line.
																																</p>

																																<p>

																																</p>

																																<p>
																																	Microsoft has already promised further improvements to Windows Recall, including more security features such as locking the Windows Recall app down unless you authenticate with Windows Hello bio authentication first. The company is also working on more features, such as topics, which will automatically group similar things Recall has spotted into easy-to-access groups of snapshots.
																																</p>

																																<p>

																																</p>

																																<p>
																																	Overall, I really, genuinely like Windows Recall. I think it's a really useful tool and one of the first "AI" features I've encountered that enhanced my productivity. Even with the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-has-lost-trust-with-its-users-windows-recall-is-the-last-straw" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-has-lost-trust-with-its-users-windows-recall-is-the-last-straw" rel="external nofollow">controversy surrounding this feature</a>, I can't wait for it to begin properly shipping. Microsoft says the feature does not upload snapshots to the cloud, and any data it collects will be encrypted locally on the device by the time Recall begins shipping.

																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			Windows Recall isn't the only feature exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. In fact, there's a whole bunch of them that are exclusive to these new NPU-equipped machines. Unfortunately, I'd describe only half of these features as actually useful, with the other half falling under the gimmicky umbrella.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			We'll start with the gimmicks, which mostly involve on-device image generation in the Windows 11 Paint and Photos app. You've already been able to generate images using Copilot for over a year now, but with Copilot+ PCs, you can finally do it locally without the need for Copilot.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			The Photos app has been updated with a built-in image generator, which lets you type a query and have the Photos app use the power of the on-device NPU to generate multiple images based on the query provided. The results are... fine. They're definitely not as good or as realistic as some of the online image generators you can find, but for a locally rendered effort, they're not bad. I just don't have much of a use for them.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<div>

																																					<img alt="Windows 11 24H2" class="ipsImage" height="720" width="720" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ygFvsKbf3tdVChCnQ2ccV9.jpg">
																																				</p>

																																				<p>
																																					<em><span>Photos can now generate AI images locally, but I didn't find much use for this. </span><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
																																				</p>

																																				<p>

																																				</p>

																																				<p>
																																					What's annoying is that even though the point of an NPU is to enable the ability to generate images offline, you actually can't generate anything offline. Microsoft requires an internet connection to ensure you're not generating anything illegal. For whatever reason, there isn't a local blacklist that the Photos app is able to look at. It needs to remain connected to the web. So, your local NPU is basically useless when disconnected from the internet in this scenario.
																																				</p>

																																				<p>

																																				</p>

																																				<p>
																																					These criticisms pretty much extend to Paint as well, the other app that has gained local generative capabilities with Windows 11 version 24H2. I found the quality of the images generated here vary significantly, and it requires an internet connection to function anyway.
																																				</p>

																																							<em><span>Generative AI in Paint is a gimmick. </span><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
																																						</p>

																																						<p>

																																						</p>

																																						<p>
																																							Unlike Photos, which takes a user-entered query and generates images from scratch, the Paint app actually takes queues from sketches drawn by the user. Microsoft calls this Cocreator, and it lets Paint draw a more advanced version of whatever it is you've painted. It's a cool tech demo, but nothing more than that. I can see this being popular with young children, but that's probably about it.
																																						</p>

																																						<p>

																																						</p>

																																						<p>
																																							Moving on to the more useful Copilot+ PC features, we'll start with Live Captions. Windows has had a built-in captions tool for some time, but it requires the internet to utilize. With Copilot+ PCs, this is no longer the case. Live Captions now utilizes the on-device NPU to transcribe audio into English directly on the device. In my testing, it works rather well.

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Microsoft has also added new Studio Effects to Windows 11 with version 24H2, which also utilize the NPU. These effects consist of new creative filters that smooth your skin and apply an artistic visual style to your live video feed. There's also a new portrait light feature that attempts to brighten your face in dark environments.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									My favorite feature is automatic framing, which keeps you in the center of the shot, along with portrait background blur, which gives your video feed a soft, natural-looking blurred backdrop. There are also two eye contact modes: Teleprompter and Standard. Both don't look particularly realistic, so I don't use them.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Lastly, we have AutoSR, a new feature that's designed to enhance older Windows games with better visuals. It adds additional frames to make games run smoother and upscale lower-resolution textures without much of a hit on performance. It essentially lets older games look and run better on modern hardware.
																																								</p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									In our testing, we found AutoSR works pretty well. It's automatically enabled on a small list of games, but you can manually turn it on for any game you like via the Windows Settings app. In the game Control, we found the visuals looked sharper with well-preserved detail at 720p, also increasing frames per second from 45 to 60.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Overall, "Copilot+ PC" features are a bit of a mixed bag. Windows Recall, Live Captions, Advanced Studio Effects, and AutoSR are all great additions. However, on-device image generation in Paint and Photos is more of a gimmick at this point. I'd like to see more Windows features utilize the NPU in the future, as not much actually takes advantage of it right now.

																																								<p>
																																									Windows 11 version 24H2 is the first feature update in two years that brings with it notable platform changes and enhancements, which means under-the-hood changes designed to make Windows overall better to use. This time, these changes are most notable on PCs running an Arm-based processor, basically anything ranging from a Snapdragon 850 up to the latest Snapdragon X chips.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Microsoft says it rearchitected Windows 11 for Arm, and that results in faster overall performance on Arm PCs. I can confirm that older devices like the Surface Pro X do benefit from a slight performance boost when upgrading to version 24H2. It's most noticeable when nipping around in the OS, opening things like apps and flyouts.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									The company has also rebuilt the x86 app-emulation layer for Arm PCs, too. Now called PRISM, this improved emulation runs some apps up to 10% faster, which is great to see. Now, apps will still feel emulated on older Windows on Arm PCs, but they will no longer feel as slow as they once used to.

																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Elsewhere, Microsoft has delivered several updates to the Windows Update system, designed to improve the Windows updating experience and reduce downtime. First, "hotpatching" is now supported in the Windows Client. This is a feature that lets Microsoft deliver security updates and bug fixes to users without requiring a reboot to apply them. I don't expect the company to use this all the time, but it will be useful for any out-of-band security updates that may be needed. You won't even notice it happen.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									The Windows Settings app has gained a few new options, too. Now, there are more legacy settings for the mouse present in the modern Mouse area of Windows Settings. You can now configure your scrolling direction behavior, as well as enable or disable enhanced precision directly within the modern Settings app.
																																								</p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Microsoft has also made some improvements to power settings. You can now customize your power plan for being plugged in or unplugged, regardless of your current plugged-in state. So, if you're plugged in and want to change the power plan for when you're unplugged, you can do that now. Previously, you'd have to unplug your laptop first to change the unplugged power plan.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Battery saver has also been renamed to "Energy Saver," and is now available on PCs without a battery. Energy Saver is designed to reduce energy consumption, not just prolong battery life. It does this by reducing background services and activities, and can even reduce overall clock speed. This pulls less energy from the wall hence it now applies to desktop PCs, too.

																																								<p>
																																									The Windows 11 2024 Update is a great release that continues to focus on improving day-to-day tasks and activities while also introducing new features and platform enhancements. I really like the updates to the Start menu and File Explorer, introducing even deeper integration with Phone Link to the point where your smartphone is now an extension of Windows.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									I also like the improvements to the System Tray and Quick Settings panel; I think both look much cleaner as a result of the changes made in this update, though I'm not a fan of not being able to hide quick actions I don't intend to use. The reintroduction of animations to Taskbar app preview thumbnails is also a welcome addition.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									The AI stuff is a mixed bag only because much of it is locked behind Copilot+ PCs. Windows Recall is the first truly useful "AI" feature I've used on a desktop OS, but the controversy surrounding it has cast a huge cloud over Windows' AI efforts. Can users trust Microsoft to build AI features like Recall?

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									Advanced Windows Studio Effects and AutoSR are great additions, but I don't think these features alone are enough to encourage people to go out and buy a Copilot+ PC. They're nice extras but not the sole reason to upgrade to newer hardware.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									I also appreciate many of the under-the-hood improvements coming in this release, including a better Windows Update experience that's designed to be less obtrusive and performance improvements for Windows on Arm devices like the Surface Pro X. Updates that improve the performance of older devices don't come very often, so it's good to see here.

																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									However, the new Windows Copilot and Outlook apps are a step backward, in my opinion. I don't like how Copilot can no longer control Windows Settings or open apps, and I really don't like how the new Outlook is basically just a web app that's heavier and slower than the older apps it's replacing.
																																								</p>

																																								<p>

																																								</p>

																																								<p>
																																									And lastly, the continued unfinished state of dark mode is just unprofessional at this point. It's been almost ten years, and Microsoft still hasn't completed it. There are too many areas of the OS that you encounter on a daily basis that don't support dark mode, and it really brings the quality of the OS down, in my opinion.

	As we get closer to the public release of Windows 11 24H2, developers release more and more software and driver updates for the upcoming Windows version. Today, Intel shipped a new Wi-Fi driver that adds Wi-Fi 7 support for Windows 11 version 24H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To make use of Wi-Fi 7, your computer should be running Windows 11 version 24H2, Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Driver 23.70.2 and have a compatible Wi-Fi 7 network card, such as Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE202, BE201, or BE200. If you do not know your adapter version, go to Settings &gt; Network &amp; Internet &gt; Wi-Fi &gt; Hardware properties and check the Description string.

	Following the release of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/stardock-updates-fences-5-with-new-features-and-various-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">a new version of Fences 5</a>, Stardock pushed an update for another of its Windows apps. This time, users received a new version of Start11 v2, one of the best alternatives to Windows 11's stock Start menu (it also works on Windows 10). Version 2.1 is now available for download, and it brings native support for Windows devices powered by ARM processors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you own one of the latest Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X processors, such as <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/specs-appeal-comparing-the-new-surface-pro-with-surface-pro-9-and-surface-pro-8/" rel="external nofollow">the Surface Pro 11</a>, you can now run Start11 natively without any performance or compatibility sacrifices. While Copilot+ PCs are pretty good at running "classic" x86 apps through the emulation layer, nothing beats the performance and energy efficiency of a native app.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Besides ARM support, Start11 brings other notable updates and improvements. In Start11 version 2.1, more elements of the legacy Control Panel should show up in search results, making it easier to tweak your PC settings that have not made their way to the Settings app:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Along with ARM support, there are several other updates in this release including enhanced search for legacy Control Panel items – more legacy Control Panel items will now show up when searching. In addition, there are also updates for how folder paths are stored to be more resilient with deployments and Networx is also supported when enhanced taskbar is turned on.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	You can learn more about the latest update in a post on the official Stardock website. Start11 v2 2.1 is now rolling out to all users, and you can get to the latest version in the app's settings section. Start11 v2 is available on Stardock's website and Steam. Alternatively, <span style="font-size:16px">download the entire Object Desktop package from Stardock. </span><a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/b3JXM6" rel="external nofollow" style="font-size: 16px;">Object Desktop</a><span style="font-size:16px"> includes programs such as </span><a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/AoeZZR" rel="external nofollow" style="font-size: 16px;">Fences</a><span style="font-size:16px">, </span><a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/LPB67O" rel="external nofollow" style="font-size: 16px;">roupy</a><span style="font-size:16px">, </span><a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/XxjkMM" rel="external nofollow" style="font-size: 16px;">SoundPackager</a><span style="font-size:16px">, </span><a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/4e0991" rel="external nofollow" style="font-size: 16px;">DeskScapes</a><span style="font-size:16px"> and </span><a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/a1Vg7Q" rel="external nofollow" style="font-size: 16px;">Multiplicity</a><span style="font-size:16px">.</span>

	This week, Microsoft made a massive drop of fresh Windows 11 preview builds, giving insiders in every channel a new update to try. As usual, shortly after the release, enthusiasts started discovering hidden and unannounced changes and new features. The latest Dev build, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-insider-dev-channel-build-261201542-kb5041872-makes-a-widgets-taskbar-change/" rel="external nofollow">26120.1542</a>, contains two new options for webcams, including the ability to stream your video to multiple apps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In its current form, Windows 11 only lets you use a webcam in one application, so launching the Camera app during a Zoom call results in the former showing a "Close other apps" message. With build 26120.1542, Microsoft is changing that. A hidden feature lets you toggle on the "Multi-app Camera" feature and stream to several applications at once.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Microsoft says in the description:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Designed for the hard-of-hearing community, to allow multiple video apps to stream from this camera at the same time. Once turned on, camera settings such as Brightness can only be changed from this page.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	To toggle on the "Multi-app Camera" feature, head to Settings &gt; Bluetooth &amp; Devices &gt; Camera, then select the camera you want to use and click "Advanced Camera Settings." A new window will show up on the screen, allowing you to turn on multi-app camera streaming.
</p>

<p>

</p>

</figure>

<p>
	In addition to the ability to use your webcam in multiple apps simultaneously, Windows 11 build 26120.1542 features a so-called Basic Mode for camera troubleshooting:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Turns on basic camera streaming functionality. To be used to debug serious camera issues when all other methods have failed.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft has not mentioned those features in the official release notes, so the official details currently remain unknown. Expect to hear more about them in future Windows 11 preview builds. Until then, you can toggle on and test those two features using the vivetool app and the following IDs: 49575624, 50292326, and 48433719.

	Whether you like it or not, Microsoft has a new Outlook app, and this guide will help you get started.
</h3>

<p>
	On <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="/windows-11" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11</a>, Microsoft is finally ditching the legacy Mail and Calendar apps (originally introduced on <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-10" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10</a>) with the new unified experience for emails and calendars. The new experience will eventually replace the desktop version of the Outlook app that's part of the Microsoft 365 (Office) apps.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new experience is identical to the online version of Outlook but with an application wrapper specifically designed for the desktop with offline and multiple account support. Using this app, you can connect Outlook accounts, Hotmail, Live, and other services, such as Google Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud, and you can even attach IMAP accounts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The idea with the new Outlook for Windows 11 is to have only one experience across the devices and on the web, allowing the company to improve the app's development and features more quickly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, the app aims to help you compose better emails using AI features, and with the integration of the Microsoft Editor, you get rich editing, spelling, and auto-complete suggestions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The calendar experience introduces various improvements, such as the addition of Google Calendar, multiple time zones, weather, and calendar-sharing support.  Of course, the app also offers access to your contacts with the People service and Microsoft 365 apps and services (online), such as Word, Excel, To Do, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In this <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="/how-to" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-to" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-to" rel="external nofollow">how-to guide</a>, I'll give you an overview of the new email client for Windows 11 and the steps to configure the most important settings.

	After previously launching a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/evolved-teams-and-a-lot-more-lands-in-windows-11-build-26080-kb5037133-update/" rel="external nofollow">preview version of a new unified Microsoft Teams app</a> for work, personal, or education accounts for members of the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft has announced that this new Teams app is now generally available for Windows 10, 11, and Mac users. You have the option to wait until the app is updated automatically, but you can also go ahead and <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app" rel="external nofollow">download the new version from the Microsoft Store</a> to get it faster.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-blog/unified-teams-app-for-work-personal-and-education-accounts-is/ba-p/4217988" rel="external nofollow">In a blog post</a>, Microsoft stated that Teams users who want to add more than one of their accounts to the new Teams app can first sign into one of those accounts on the app. Then they can select their profile picture, which is found in the upper right corner of the app, to add those other accounts. When you launch the new Teams app from your work, personal, or education account, they will open in side-by-side windows from that app.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft added:
</p>

<p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		Additionally, we know that many users have multiple Teams accounts, so we made it simple to choose your preferred account when joining a Teams meeting. You can also join as a guest without signing in. Whether you’re joining a call to connect with a customer or discuss your school’s fall fundraiser, simply select your preferred account the moment you join the meeting.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	This new unified app means that Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac users who sign into the app with a personal email can connect and collaborate with any other Teams users for free. If you sign into a Teams app with a work email account, the app will still be subject to the restrictions that Teams admins have previously set up.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This new unified desktop app joins Microsoft's Teams apps for Android and iOS, which have already supported sign-ups for work, personal, and educational users.

	According to user reports following this month's Patch Tuesday, the August 2024 Windows updates are breaking dual boot on Linux systems with Secure Boot enabled.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This issue is caused by Microsoft's decision to apply a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) update to block Linux boot loaders unpatched against the <a href="https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2112975#c0" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">CVE-2022-2601</a> GRUB2 Secure Boot bypass vulnerability, which could "have an impact on Windows security."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"The vulnerability assigned to this CVE is in the Linux GRUB2 boot loader, a boot loader designed to support Secure Boot on systems that are running Linux," Microsoft <a href="https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/en-US/advisory/CVE-2022-2601" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">says</a> in an advisory published last week to address this issue.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"It is being documented in the Security Update Guide to announce that the latest builds of Windows are no longer vulnerable to this security feature bypass using the Linux GRUB2 boot loader.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"The SBAT value is not applied to dual-boot systems that boot both Windows and Linux and should not affect these systems. You might find that older Linux distribution ISOs will not boot. If this occurs, work with your Linux vendor to get an update."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, while Redmond says that the SBAT update that blocks vulnerable <a href="https://github.com/rhboot/shim/blob/main/SBAT.md" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">UEFI shim bootloaders</a> should not impact dual-boot systems in any way, <a href="https://community.frame.work/t/sbat-verification-error-booting-linux-after-windows-update/56354" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">many</a> <a href="https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/2947" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Linux</a> <a href="https://askubuntu.com/questions/1523353/windows-aug-13-update-broke-my-ubuntu-system" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">users</a> <a href="https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=12452" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">say</a> <a href="https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=427297" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">that</a> <a href="https://forum.zorin.com/t/verifying-shim-sbat-data-failed-security-policy-violation/40257/2" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">their</a> systems (running Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Puppy Linux, and other distros) no longer boot after installing the August 2024 Windows updates on the Windows OS.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Those affected see "Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation. Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation" errors, and, for some, the devices will also <a href="https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2510718" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">immediately shut down</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Currently, there is no definitive list of Linux distributions and versions affected by this known issue and Linux users who tried working around the issue <a href="https://community.frame.work/t/sbat-verification-error-booting-linux-after-windows-update/56354" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">say</a> that deleting the SBAT policy or wiping the Windows installation and restoring Secure Boot to factory settings will not work.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The only apparent way to revive the device is to disable Secure Boot, install the latest version of their favorite Linux distro, and re-enable Secure Boot.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has yet to acknowledge that installing this month's Patch Tuesday update may render dual-boot systems unable to boot.

	Mozilla has released a new bug-fixing update for Firefox 129. Version 129.0.2 follows the previous small update under version 129.0.1, and it aims to fix some accessibility issues with screen readers and broken drag-and-drop operations.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first fixed bug is for customers who use Firefox on Nvidia-powered systems and rely on accessibility technologies, like screen readers. In some cases, the screen reader would say "Alert" when hovering over tabs (by the way, Firefox recently <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-129-is-out-with-big-updates-for-reader-view-tab-previews-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">received tab preview support</a>). This bug affects only Windows users—Firefox for Linux and macOS works with screen readers as it should.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The second bug is related to drag-and-drop operations, where Firefox would not trigger an action, such as moving a tab outside the current window to create a new one. This issue has been successfully fixed in Firefox 129.0.2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is the official changelog for Firefox 129.0.2 with the corresponding links to the patched bugs:
</p>

<p>

		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Interestingly, this is the second drag-and-drop bug that has been fixed in Firefox 129. The previous update, 129.0.1, resolved the problem with uploading documents to certain websites by dragging them onto the current tab. You can check out the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-12901-is-out-with-fixes-for-video-playback-issues-and-crashes-when-dragging-files/" rel="external nofollow">full release notes for Firefox 129.0.1 here</a>. For reference, release notes for Firefox 129.0 are available <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-129-is-out-with-big-updates-for-reader-view-tab-previews-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">here</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<hr>
<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can download Firefox 129.0.2 by heading to <strong>Menu &gt; Help &gt; About Firefox</strong>. Another way to update is to <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/" rel="external nofollow">download the installer from the official website</a> or just continue using the browser as is. It will download the update in the background and update itself automatically upon the next restart.

	AMD has just pushed out a driver update to Radeon graphics users, and it's an essential one for anyone looking to jump into games coming out in the near future. The AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.8.1 driver brings official support for <em>Black Myth: Wukong, Star Wars Outlaws, Concord, </em>and even the<em> Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Open Beta.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Black Myth: Wukong</em> released today, August 20, and AMD graphics users wanting to monkey around in the tough action game will want to get this driver beforehand. Unfortunately, the driver team has not provided any data on what kind of performance improvement, if any, can this driver provide.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Aside from games support, the HYPR-Tune feature for automatic configuration of FSR 3 frame generation has been expanded to include <em>Modern Warfare 3, Spider-Man Remastered </em>as well as <em>Miles Morales.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Star Wars Outlaws" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/04/1712681134_brand_metadata_screenshot_aki_action_wide-18d3e3e98c05ebb6c61f-1536x864.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Moreover, AMD Radeon Anti-Lag 2 support now supports one more game, that being for the PC port of <em>Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut from Sony. </em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are the fixed issues included in the 24.8.1 driver:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			Intermittent application crash may occur while playing Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess on some Radeon™ RX 6600 and 6700 series GPUs.
		</li>
		<li>
			Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may occur while launching Pacific Drive or KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-.
		</li>
		<li>
			Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings from AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition may fail to correctly apply for OpenGL® applications.
		</li>
		<li>
			Artifacts may appear while playing certain games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales or Rust.
		</li>
		<li>
			Increased memory usage may be observed while playing certain versions of Minecraft Java Edition.
		</li>
		<li>
			Improved “Optimizing Shaders” time when initially launching Forza Motorsport.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	There are known issues too:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			Audio and video may intermittently become out of sync while recording using the AV1 codec in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. [Resolution targeted for 24.9.2]

	If you use Fences 5 to keep your desktop neat and well-organized, then there is a new update for you to download. Today, Stardock released Fences 5.81 with a new feature that should make life easier for those frequently changing devices with external monitors. In addition, the latest version features multiple quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, and other small changes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The highlight of the update is the ability to swap screen contents in the Layout tab. Stardock says this feature should help users who often connect and disconnect from external monitors. Also, you will notice performance improvements when resizing Folder Portals and compatibility updates when syncing files with Dropbox and OneDrive.
</p>

<p>

</figure>

<p>
	Another change in Fences 5.81 is improved compatibility with the latest Windows 11 preview builds from the Insider program. With the newest update, Peek provides a "more consistent experience," which is a nice addition, considering that most developers rarely support preview versions of operating systems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, the update contains various bug fixes and changes to the auto-adjustment settings. All users are now defaulted to "Store my layout on a per-monitor configuration," a feature that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/stardock-updates-fences-5-with-a-new-engine-for-better-multi-monitor-support/" rel="external nofollow">was released in version 5.5</a>. While the legacy options are still available, Stardock recommends using the new engine, which works better with multi-monitor setups and is overall "superior in every way to the legacy tooling."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can update to the latest Fences version by heading to Settings &gt; About. The update is now rolling out to all users, so it should be there waiting for you. Fences 5 is available as a standalone app on the official Stardock website and Steam. However, you can also download the entire Object Desktop package. <a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/b3JXM6" rel="external nofollow">Object Desktop</a> includes programs such as <a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/0Joqq3" rel="external nofollow">Start11</a>, <a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/LPB67O" rel="external nofollow">Groupy</a>, <a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/XxjkMM" rel="external nofollow">SoundPackager</a>, <a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/4e0991" rel="external nofollow">DeskScapes</a> and <a href="https://stardock.pxf.io/a1Vg7Q" rel="external nofollow">Multiplicity</a>.

		Updated the taskbar to now support first letter navigation, so when keyboard focus is set to the taskbar (WIN + T), you can press a letter, and it will jump to the open or pinned app whose name starts with that letter. Pressing the letter multiple times will jump to the subsequent app which starts with that letter, if there are multiple apps for that letter. For those using uncombined taskbar, rather than app name, the first letter navigation will use window name. Along with this, pressing Home and End will now move keyboard focus to the first and last (respectively) items in the taskbar.

	Microsoft today introduced Microsoft Loop 2.0 with a revamped UI and enhancements to improve the overall user experience. First, Loop has moved to a new URL: <a href="https://loop.cloud.microsoft." ipsnoembed="false" rel="external nofollow">https://loop.cloud.microsoft.</a> This URL change is part of a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/all-microsoft-365-apps-and-services-will-begin-to-use-the-cloudmicrosoft-domain/" rel="external nofollow">company-wide effort</a> at Microsoft to streamline the overall experience by reducing sign-in prompts, redirects, and delays when accessing Microsoft's online services.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-loop-is-now-generally-available-new-features-are-being-tested-in-preview-form/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Loop</a> 2.0 comes with a revamped UI that looks clean and simple. Beyond the new UI, Microsoft has made it easier to access your meeting notes, favorites, recent items, and more with the new navigation menu on the left. There is a new prominent Create button on the top left that allows you to create workspaces or draft ideas from anywhere in the app. Previously, you could create new Loop items only from the home page.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With Loop 2.0, you can now add your Loop Components, pages, or ideas to a workspace directly from the breadcrumb at the top. You can add them to existing workspaces or create brand new ones. All the Collaborative Meeting Notes from Microsoft Teams are now organized under the Meeting Notes tab. You can also create your pre-read notes or agenda items for all of your upcoming meetings within the new Loop experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Favorites tab on the left navigation bar will allow you to easily access and switch between your favorite and recent workspaces in the Microsoft Loop app. Finally, the Recent tab on the navigation bar will allow you to easily find your most recent Loop pages and components across Microsoft 365. In addition to the ones you created using the Loop app, the Recent tab will even show you Loop components that you created directly in Microsoft Teams, Outlook, OneNote, and Whiteboard.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft Loop 2.0 is not live for everyone yet, but Microsoft is actively <a href="https://x.com/MicrosoftLoop/status/1825672723382640976" rel="external nofollow">rolling</a> it out, and it will be available for everyone soon.
