What you need to know

• Windows 11 24H2 is finally here, but there are still some known issues with it that Microsoft needs to work on. 
• One of those is an incompatibility issue with Easy Anti Cheat, used in games such as Fortnite, iRacing, and Elden Ring. 
• It only affects those using Intel's Alder Lake (12th Gen) and above CPUs and vPro, but Microsoft has implemented a hold on those devices getting the 24H2 upgrade until a fix is applied. 

No matter how much testing a new version of Windows goes through, there will always be bugs. That is still the case with Windows 11 24H2, now finally available outside of Qualcomm-powered Copilot+ PCs at last. 

Microsoft has a list of known issues that are currently being worked on, but one in particular will be of interest to gamers. Especially gamers that play Fortnite, or any other title that uses Easy Anti Cheat (EAC). 

"Microsoft is working with Easy Anti-Cheat on an incompatibility issue between Windows 11, version 24H2 and the Easy Anti-Cheat application. This software is automatically installed with some games as part of security and cheat-prevention measures used in multiplayer online PC games."

[General]

 

• [REMINDER] Insider Preview Build Expiration: The expiration date for Insider Preview builds flighted to the Canary Channel has been updated to 9/15/2025 starting with Build 27695. Please make sure you are updated to the latest build in the Canary Channel.

 

[Lock screen]

 

• We have updated the Lock screen so that the media controls will now show at the lower bottom center of the Lock screen now when media is being played.

[Start menu]

 

• You can drag apps from the Pinned section of the menu and pin them to the taskbar.

 

[Taskbar & System Tray]

 

• Updated the taskbar to now support first letter navigation, so when keyboard focus is set to the taskbar (WIN + T), you can press a letter, and it will jump to the open or pinned app whose name starts with that letter. Pressing the letter multiple times will jump to the subsequent app which starts with that letter, if there are multiple apps for that letter. For those using uncombined taskbar, rather than app name, the first letter navigation will use window name. Along with this, pressing Home and End will now move keyboard focus to the first and last (respectively) items in the taskbar.

 

[Notifications]

 

• If desired, there’s now an option to turn off the suggestions to disable notifications from certain apps. You can now press the “…” within the notification to disable the notification, as you can with other notifications, or you can go to the list of notification senders in Settings > System > Notifications and turn it off from there (called “Notification Suggestions” in the list). Note – this entry will only appear in the senders list after you have received one.

 

[Windows Share]

 

• We’re rolling out some minor UI changes to simplify the Windows share window which removes the search box.

 

[Narrator]

 

• We have made several changes to improve the performance of Narrator scan mode. This is expected to make scan mode responses much quicker, especially while using Microsoft Edge, and reading through large documents. To try out scan mode, turn on Narrator first (Win key + Ctrl + Enter), and then turn scan mode ON by pressing Caps Lock + Spacebar during a Narrator session.

 

[Energy Saver]

 

• For laptops on battery, a notification will pop up asking you to plug in your laptop if the battery level reaches 20% while Energy Saver is set to “Always On”.

 

[Windows Update]

 

• We’ve made some small design improvements to the dialog that opens if there’s something that needs your attention before proceeding with a Windows update, for example if more space is needed or there’s a compatibility issue. This includes updating the icon sizes and spacing.

 

[Input]

 

• We have updated Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Touch to have a new section for touch screen edge gestures, where you can choose if you would like to disable the left or right screen edge touch gesture. Note, this feature is rolling out so not all Insiders in the Canary Channel will see it right away.

 

[Administrator protection]

 

• Administrator protection is an upcoming platform security feature in Windows 11, which aims to protect free floating admin rights for administrator users allowing them to still perform all admin functions with just-in-time admin privileges. This feature is off by default and needs to be enabled via group policy. We plan to share more details about this feature at Microsoft Ignite.

• Fixed an issue which was causing some Insiders to experience a hang at the boot screen and their PC to roll back with error 0xC1900101 when trying to upgrade to the previous flight.
• Fixed an issue in the last 2 Canary builds which was causing sporadic explorer.exe crashes when moving windows around.
• Fixed an issue causing some Insiders on the last 2 Canary builds to see a bugcheck with error message “SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION”.

 

[Input]

 

• Fixed an issue causing the emoji panel to close when trying to switch to the kaomoji and symbols sections, or after selecting an emoji.
• Updated the logic for the setting “Press the lower right corner of the touchpad to right-click” Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Touchpad so it shouldn’t show in cases where the touchpad doesn’t support the functionality.

 

[Widgets]

 

• Fixed an issue which could result in the Widgets icon unexpectedly displaying in the taskbar twice sometimes.

 

[Other]

 

• Fixed a high hitting wmiprvse.exe crash in the last 2 Canary flights.
• Fixed an issue which was causing certain apps (like Media Player) to crash when playing audio for some Insiders in the last 2 Canary flights.
• Fixed an issue for some Insiders with dual boot devices, where the boot menu (where you select which OS to boot into) wasn’t displaying correctly (the color was wrong, and it might only display in half the available space).

• [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] If you are joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel or retail, you will lose Windows Hello pin and biometrics to sign into your PC with error 0xd0000225 and error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available”. You should be able to re-create your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN”.

 

[Movies & TV]

 

• [NEW] Insiders may not be able to play purchased content in the Movies & TV app on the recent Canary Channel builds. This issue will soon be fixed in a future flight.

 

[Input]

 

• [NEW] We’re working on the fix for an underlying issue causing the Emoji Panel and Clipboard History to not open in certain surfaces anymore, including in Registry Editor.

Following that, Stardock has announced support for Windows 11 24H2 on two of its popular customization apps, Start11 v2, Fences 5, and Group 2. The firm also brought attention to the fact that it has been making an active effort to do so by shipping more updates recently so as to provide day-one support for when Windows 11's 2024 feature update would drop. This optimization effort started all the way back in April 2024 when it was found that 24H2-based Insider previews were breaking customization apps.

It writes:

For the past few months, Stardock has been diligently evaluating our applications like Start11 v2 and Fences 5 to make sure that they are fully functional with these changes. You may have noticed that we have been shipping more updates recently, while not always directly related to 24H2, it was part of our effort to make sure that when the new Windows release hits your device, your applications are ready.

For those who may not be familiar, Start11 v2, as the name suggests, is a Start menu customization tool for Windows 10 and 11, such that users can better personalize their Windows Start menu experience. You can read all about the latest feature additions to Start11 by going through our coverage at this link.

Meanwhile, Fences is a desktop organization tool for Windows that helps users manage their icons and shortcuts by placing them into customizable, resizable shaded areas called “fences.” These fences can automatically sort and organize desktop content based on how the user wants it, making it easier to keep the desktop tidy and improve productivity.

Fences 5 introduced new features like Chameleon, an enhanced version of Peek, and better multi-monitor support.

Finally, Group 2 has also gained Windows 11 24H2 support. As the name suggests, Groupy enables users to group Windows apps together for their convenience, similar to how you can group tabs together.

It’s not that 24H2 was unexpected — but we had very, very little notice.

You won’t be surprised by this advice: Don’t take the 24H2 update just yet. Nobody has had time to react to today’s announcement — much less examine the changes, check out the new features, and assess the effects of the update on existing systems.

I considered raising the MS-DEFCON level to 1 because of the suddenness of the news, but 24H2 is not exactly an emergency. So I’m raising the level to 2. I recommend that you use your preferred delaying tactic to prevent 24H2’s installation until we’ve gone through our testing and you reach your own comfort level. As usual, I suggest Steve Gibson’s easy InControl app.

In all likelihood, Windows 11 24H2 will be dribbled out to users in accordance with individual update settings. If you’ve turned on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, expect it soon.

Another reason for moving to MS-DEFCON 2 is that the late September updates have a few problems. For example, KB5043145 caused reboot issues, as I reported in the forum topic Preview updates cause issues – KB5043145. A few days after my post, Microsoft announced that it had discovered the root cause and that the fix would be deployed as a known-issue rollback coming in future updates. We won’t know whether that one, or others, will be fixed in the October updates, so caution is warranted. I’ll be looking into side effects next week.

Here are a few things that we expect to see in the October update for Windows 11. This short list comes from Microsoft’s KB5043145 support post, as linked above.

That last bullet point makes no sense to me. We are talking about changes to the Windows 11 Settings page for Delivery Optimization to make it look more like … Windows 11? What?

Note that Windows 11 24H2 is a major Windows update, a complete OS replacement. Therefore, get backed up before you venture forth.

Meanwhile, Windows 10 is still receiving updates and changes as well. The following changes are included in the September preview update, which in turn are included in the October updates:

Although the Windows 10 updates did not trigger blue screens, I still recommend that you defer these updates for now.

The Windows 10 October release will include changes to single sign-on as a result of required changes to ensure compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Economic Area (EEA). Fixes are included for Windows Server to ensure that File Explorer and taskbar won’t stop responding.

Finally, the update fixes an issue where Microsoft Defender for Endpoint work folders files fail to sync when Defender for Endpoint is on.

Microsoft has released the 24H2 Group Policy templates and spreadsheet in anticipation of the 24H2 release. Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2) can be downloaded here, and the Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet for Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2) can be downloaded here.

My recommendation for business users is to review the impact of 24H2 in your organization and begin to test the release before deployment. A good place to start is Microsoft’s Inside this update page.

What you need to know

• The Windows 11 2024 Update, which is also known as Windows 11 version 24H2, became generally available recently.
• The update includes several new features, but it also boosts the performance of PCs.

Microsoft just shipped a major update that brings PCs to Windows 11 version 24H2. More commonly known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, the latest version of Windows brings security enhancements and new features. It also includes under the hood performance enhancements that should make your PC feel much smoother. It appears that even unsupported hardware gets a performance boost, as shared by a user on Reddit.

Windows 11 has strict minimum requirements, including a need for a TPM 2.0 chip. Those requirements prevent millions of PCs from being upgraded to Windows 11, at least officially. There are, however, workarounds to get Windows 11 onto unsupported systems. Microsoft has closed some of those gaps, but there are still workarounds in place.

Concerns of creating the "the single biggest jump in junked computers ever" are aplenty, since it seems unlikely that Microsoft will lift its minimum requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. But today's news isn't about millions of otherwise working PCs that could become junk when Windows 10 reaches its end of support. Today is about Windows 11's latest update and how it improves the performance of even older PCs.

Reddit user bambamito shared their experience running Windows 11 on a PC with 10-year-old Intel Celeron processor. They ran the OS on that PC before the Windows 11 2024 Update, but saw better performance after updating.

"Performance experience increased!  At least in my experience," they said. "Opening explorer is a lot quicker (opens in one click no hesitation: same SSD cuz i never reinstalled), scrolling through chrome is smoother and playing YouTube videos loads faster (I always watch on 1080 btw)... overall UI smoothness increased."

Others shared similar experiences in the thread below bambamito's post. We'll have to see feedback from a larger sample size to know the full impact of the update, but it's nice to see the performance bump appear for many.

Unlike Microsoft 365, which is a subscription-based product, Office 2024 is a one-time purchase for customers who are not ready to move to a subscription.

Office 2024 includes many features and updates that are currently available for Microsoft 365 subscribers. In a post on the official support website, Microsoft outlined some of the updates for those coming to Office 2024 from previous perpetual releases.

For example, there is a new default theme that better matches Windows 11's visuals, OpenDocument Format 1.4 support, improved accessibility features and checkers, the ability to easily add images from mobile devices, dynamic charts and new functions in Excel, better document recovery in Word, new drawing tools in OneNote, closed-caption support in PowerPoint, better search in Outlook, performance improvements, customizable left and right swipes on macOS, and a lot more.

It is worth noting that Office 2024 is the first Office release without Publisher, which was discontinued earlier this year.

Office 2024 is available on systems with Windows 10 and 11 and the three latest versions of MacOS: Sequoia, Sonoma, and Ventura. The suite requires an active internet connection and a Microsoft Account. As for the difference between bundles, the more expensive version includes Outlook and gives rights to use programs for commercial purposes.

Office 2024 Home & Student and Office 2024 Home & Business have a five-year support lifecycle. Microsoft promises to update applications with fixes and security patches from October 1, 2024, through October 9, 2029.

According to Valve, 64-bit Windows 10 is currently the most popular operating system among Steam users. It holds 48.66%, and in September 2024, it increased its market share by 1.57 points. Windows 11, on the other hand, dropped an equally proportional number of users and went down by 1.48 points to 47.69% (the August 2024 survey results were updated last month, hence the difference between the original reporting at the beginning of September).

64-bit Windows 7 is in third place with 0.31% (-0.06 points), and a mysterious "Windows 2022" showed up in fourth place with 0.08%. Overall, Windows is installed on 96.84% of all survey participants (+0.06 points).

On October 1, Statcounter reported that Windows 11 increased its global market share and reached a new all-time high of over 33.3%. The trend is expected to continue on both global and gaming markets as Windows 10 gets closer to its end of support in October 2025. Also, Windows 11 just received a big feature update, so more users are likely to upgrade to check out the latest update. Therefore, do not expect Windows 10 to sit on its former throne for a long time.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the Steam Hardware & Software Survey is optional, and it picks participants randomly.

On the hardware side, not much has changed in one month. The most popular hardware picks are still 16GB of RAM, a 6-core processor, the Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card, 8GB of VRAM, and a 1080p display. Intel remains a go-to choice for the CPU, with 66.6% of participants using chips from "Team Blue," while Nvidia has a more dominant position on the GPU market and a whopping 77.75% share.

Speaking of Windows 11 Enterprise, a video outlining the improvements on Windows 11 24H2 was also published on the Microsoft Mechanics YouTube channel. Among the several aspects of the OS discussed in it, Microsoft also discussed performance improvements on 11 when compared to Windows 10.

This was based on a study by Principled Technologies where the firm found that Windows 11 generally was faster. It noted:

We saw consistent improvements in battery life, system responsiveness, and performance that support upgrading to currentgen versions of your favorite laptops preloaded with Windows 11 Pro and Intel Core i5 or i7 processors.

 

Mainstream laptop users could potentially take advantage of longer battery life while working wherever they want, finish common and not so common tasks in less time, run compute-intensive applications without worrying about surface temperatures, and enable the VBS feature without stressing about a massive performance hit.

While small performance differences between the two OSs are not unusual, Principled Technologies found a massive gap between the two quite often heavily in favor of Windows 11.

Although initially surprised, I realized the the testing was part of a Microsoft-commissioned study, though, even then, the huge differential between the two OS that Principled Technologies has presented is just way too difficult to believe.

In its study, the minimum performance lead Windows 11 had in its favor was a whopping 18.8%, and the biggest one was 246.2%, which is unbelievable, given that Neowin also tested performance differences between Windows 11 and 10 last year on both in-place upgrade and clean installed PCs, and the difference was hardly ever in the double digits.

For example, the screen-grab above shows one such performance claim which suggests Windows 11 laptops were up to 68.9% faster in PCMark 10 synthetic test. What you will notice from these tests is that measured devices are not even equals, implying that these comparisons are rather pointless.

Windows 11 24H2 may actually be faster which is also what some users have found on their systems, though, this is probably not the most appropriate way to flaunt about it.

Alongside that, Microsoft has also published information about Windows 11 LTSC or Long Term Servicing channel. The company had already confirmed earlier in April that the Windows 11 2024 update would be the LTSC which was also expected given that LTSC releases typically happen every three years. However, information related to features and such was not available then.

For those who may not be familiar with how LTSC works, it is a essentially a specialized version of Windows designed for environments needing stability and minimal changes, such as medical equipment and industrial systems. It receives only security updates and bug fixes, with feature updates every three years or so, and is supported for 10 years. This why LTSC excludes frequently updated components like Microsoft Edge and the Microsoft Store.

It has has put up a support document detailing all that is to know about the new features and improvements in Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. Alongside that, the company has also shared such information on Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024. Microsoft has explained them in detail under several heads. But here is a gist of it.

Some of the latest features include Bluetooth LE (low energy) support, Wi-Fi 7 support, HEVC (H.266) support, and more. New tools related to development like Sudo for Windows, Dev Drive, and more, are also there.

There are several upgrades related to Windows management including Widnows LAPS (Local Admin Password Solution) policy improvement, automatic account management, and image rollback detection.

Security has also been enhanced with the introduction of Pluton, Rust and SHA-3 cryptography. Others include support for Passkeys, Passwordless logins, and Personal Data encryption.

What you need to know

• Microsoft is launching an experimental new Copilot feature called Copilot Vision that can browse the web in Edge alongside you.
• With permission, Copilot Vision will be able to see the same webpages you do, and offer advice or suggestions based on real-time conversations.
• You can ask it for help with shopping or vent to it over a headline or story you've been reading.

Microsoft has unveiled a wild new feature coming to the new Copilot called Copilot Vision that enables it to browse the web alongside you to help you make decisions or to be there as a friend simply to chat with as you read the news or shop for items. The feature is exclusive to Copilot Pro subscribers via Microsoft's new experimental "Copilot Labs" preview program, and it might be the craziest example of today's newly announced Copilot capabilities. 

With the new Copilot, Microsoft wants you to treat it more like a friend who's available to help you out and less like a tool. Copilot Vision is a clear example of this, where Copilot can sit in the Edge browser and view the same web pages you do. This is an optional feature that you must first activate, but when you do, Copilot will be able to offer advice, opinions, and help based on whatever you ask of it while looking at the web.

Here's how Microsoft describes Copilot Vision:

"Copilot sits within Microsoft Edge. If you want it to, it can understand the page you’re viewing and answer questions about its content. It can suggest next steps, answer questions, help navigate whatever it is you want to do and assist with tasks. All the while you simply speak it to in natural language."

A good example of this is looking for shoes to buy. You can enable Copilot Vision and tell it that you're looking to buy new red shoes. Copilot can offer advice on where to look for the best deals and even tell you if it thinks the shoes you're tempted to choose actually look good. You can also use it as something to talk to as you read the news or social media.

Microsoft says Copilot Vision cannot directly interact with the web, but it can guide you on where to click if you're looking for something on a website that you've struggled to find. It also won't work on paywalled sites, and in this initial preview, it only works on a curated list of websites. The company intends to roll this out more widely in the coming months.

It's important to stress that Copilot Vision is an optional feature that isn't enabled by default and is only activated if you select it. When enabled, all the data it processes is handled on-device and promptly deleted after you are done. It doesn't get sent to Microsoft or third parties for training. 

What you need to know

• Microsoft is launching a new AI screen analyzer on Windows 11 later this year called Click To Do.
• Click To Do works similarly to Android's Circle To Search, allowing users to quickly search the web based on an element selected on screen.
• Click To Do goes a step further with contextual actions based on what's currently on screen. 
• Click To Do is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs.

Microsoft has announced a big new AI feature coming exclusively to Copilot+ PCs later this year that adds an intelligent overlay to the OS which can understand what's on-screen and provide contextual actions at any time. The overlay is invoked by holding down the Windows key and clicking with your mouse.

The feature is called Click To Do and is a clear competitor to Android's Circle To Search function, only more capable. In addition to providing a quick way to visually search the web, Click To Do also provides contextual suggestions based on what it can see on screen. 

For example, if you've selected some text, Click To Do will offer actions such as summarizing what's been highlighted or rewriting it. If you've selected an image, Click To Do will provide quick actions like blurring the background or erasing an object within the image that has been selected.

When in the Click To Do overlay, you will be able to search for anything on screen with a dedicated search bar that floats at the top of the screen. This interface also offers quick access to Windows Recall, as both Recall and Click To Do use similar technology to identify what's on-screen. 

Because of this, Click To Do is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs with an NPU of 40+ TOPS. That means if you're not using a Copilot+ PC, you won't get access to this feature later this year. Copilot+ PCs will be able to begin testing Click To Do in October, and is expected to begin rolling out in waves from November onwards.

Click To Do is an example of AI being useful from a productivity standpoint. It's a feature designed to help streamline tasks and experiences, offering contextual actions that it thinks you are most likely to want to complete based on what's currently on-screen. AI as a productivity tool is the best kind of AI.

Microsoft has also announced a number of other AI features coming to Copilot+ PCs this fall, including adding AI to Windows Search. It's also launching a brand-new Copilot experience today that's more human and interactive, which can browse the web alongside you and help with tasks with Copilot Vision.

Microsoft has unveiled a major update for Copilot that launches today. The update is designed to make Copilot more human and interactive. It features a brand-new user interface that’s calmer and more intuitive, along with new features and capabilities that Microsoft hopes will elevate Copilot above being just another AI tool—it’s an AI friend, too.

The new Copilot starts at the UI, which has been completely rebuilt from the ground up with a new card-like interface that’s more stylistic and inviting. It’s very different from other Microsoft products before it, with a mixed use of fonts and less rigid stylization across the interface. The company describes the new UI as more intuitive, digestible, speedy, and fluent, with a warm tone and distinct style. It’s supposed to be more human.

“I truly believe we can create a calmer, more helpful and supportive era of technology, quite unlike anything we’ve seen before,” says CEO of Microsoft AI, Mustafa Suleyman in a letter accompanying the news. “Copilot will be there for you, in your corner, by your side, and always strongly aligned with your interests. It understands the context of your life while safeguarding your privacy, data, and security, remembering the details that are most helpful in any situation. It gives you access to a universe of knowledge, simplifying, and decluttering the daily barrage of information, and offering support and encouragement when you want it.”

First up, Microsoft has clarified that Windows 11 24H2, unlike Windows 11 23H2, is a full OS swap and can not merely be enabled via an Enablement Package (EKB).

Aside from that, the company has also explained how managed devices can be upgraded directly from Windows 10 to Windows 11 24H2, using the target version capability in the Windows Update for Business deployment service and feature update deployments via Windows Autopatch.

As always, Microsoft has urged users to upgrade immediately to the latest OS version as Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025. As for those on previous Windows 11 versions, Microsoft says that systems must be on the May 2024 non-security preview to be able to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2.

Information related to Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) has also been published:

For organizations with special-purpose devices and environments, such as manufacturing or healthcare systems, we have also released two versions of Windows 11 to the Long-Term Servicing Channel: Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024.

 

Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 is available as a per user or per device model, depending on the Volume Licensing program through which it is acquired. Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 is available through original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or directly from Microsoft through Volume Licensing.

Alongside that, the company has also assured about application compatibility claiming that "Windows 11 is the most compatible Windows operating system ever," though, it has also said that the App Assure team is here to help if users face issues.

For those curious, a feature list of all that is available in the 2024 feature update has also been added (though some have also been removed totally). They are:

• Windows Local Administrator Password Solution (LAPS) policy improvements and new automatic account management feature

• Personal Data Encryption (PDE) so that known Windows folders (Documents, Desktop, and Pictures) are protected using user authenticated encryption

• App Control for Business (formerly Windows Defender Application Control) to better protect your digital property from malicious code

• Windows protected print mode, eliminating the need to rely on third-party software installers for Morpia certified printers

• Local Security Authority (LSA) protection to help protect against the theft of secrets and credentials used for logon

• Support for Wi-Fi 7

• Bluetooth® LE audio support for assistive devices

• New controls to help manage which apps have access to the list of Wi-Fi networks around you

• Rust in the Windows kernel

• SHA-3 support

• A scrollable list (vs. single pane) of Quick Settings in the system tray that can be arranged in the way that makes sense for how you work best

• Text labels to the cut, copy, rename, share, and delete actions available at the top of the File Explorer context menu

• Support for creating 7-zip and TAR archives

• Energy saver, an easy way to extend battery life and reduce energy use that can be configured to run automatically or toggled on and off manually via Quick Settings

• Extended adaptive brightness control[3] on laptops and 2-in-1s even when they are plugged in

• Expanded availability of Voice Clarity, which cancels echo, suppresses background noise, and reduces reverberation in real-time

And we also know that the deprecation of the beloved Windows Control Panel is also probably coming some time sooner or later, but the company is still not ready to announce it yet.

In case you may not be familiar, the deprecation of a Windows feature does not imply that it is no longer available; instead it simply means that the feature is no longer being developed or being supported by the company.

One such major feature happens to be WordPad which was deprecated last year, and now Microsoft has announced that it is being completely removed on Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025. This was announced alongside 2024 feature update that also introduced a whole bunch of features. You can view the full list here.

There is no denying the WordPad has been a very popular text editor and word processor for Windows users and sadly, the free and useful feature has been wiped completely, which can be annoying for those who still use it but will no longer find it on their systems.

The company writes:

WordPad is removed from all editions of Windows starting in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025. We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.

Aside from WordPad, Microsoft has also removed AllJoyn, which too, was deprecated last year. The company explains:

Microsoft's implementation of AllJoyn, which included the Windows.Devices.AllJoyn API namespace, a Win32 API, a management configuration service provider (CSP), and an Alljoyn Router Service is retired.

 

AllJoyn, sponsored by AllSeen Alliance, was an open source discovery and communication protocol for Internet of Things scenarios such as turning on/off lights or reading temperatures. AllSeen Alliance promoted the AllJoyn project from 2013 until 2016 when it merged with the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), the sponsors of Iotivity.org, another protocol for Internet of Things scenarios.

The new Nvidia app beta update touts support for driver rollback, RTX HDR multi-monitor support, and more features. Nvidia first began testing this modernized version, which aims to unify the Control Panel, GeForce Experience, and RTX Experience, back in February.

As for the new Nvidia GeForce Game Ready 565.90 WHQL-certified driver's support, Throne and Liberty, the NCSoft-developed MMORPG, is releasing on October 1 across western regions and Japan. Nvidia recommends that interested players install this release to get optimal performance, plus DLSS 3 support. Next, MechWarrior 5: Clans is slated to land on October 17, and it will ship with Nvidia DLSS 3 and Reflex technologies.

The last of the supported games is Starship Troopers: Extermination, a 16-player co-op action game that's coming out of early access on October 11. Meanwhile, the the optimal settings configuration tool is now supported by EA SPORTS FC 25, Frostpunk 2, and God of War Ragnarök.

With Firefox 131, users can grant temporary permissions for websites. For example, if you want to allow notifications from a certain page for a limited period. According to Mozilla, a temporary permission is valid for one hour, after which Firfox automatically clears all the granted permissions.

Another feature is a long-requested one: tab previews. You can now hover the cursor over the tab strip to preview open pages without switching between them.

Other changes in Firefox 131 include improved translation, tweaks for the search bar, security fixes, a new localization, a fresh icon for the Tab Overview, and more.

Starting in October, Windows Insiders will begin to see Recall on Arm for our Qualcomm powered Copilot+ PCs. Customers who purchase an Intel or AMD-powered Copilot+ PC will see Recall initially in our Windows Insider program starting in November.

Unfortunately, Recall remains an exclusive feature on Copilot+ PC, which means existing computers with "traditional" x86 processors from Intel and AMD will not be able to run the feature. Moreover, in the latest update to Recall's security architecture, Microsoft implemented new safeguards to prevent Recall from working on non-Copilot+ PCs. Whether enthusiasts will be able to bypass those measures remains an open question.

If you want a Recall-capable Windows computer but do not want to dive into the sea of Windows on ARM, shop for a laptop with Intel's latest Core Ultra Series 2 processors or AMD's Ryzen 300 AI chips.

Another thing worth noting is that there is still no word about Recall's broad availability. In the coming months, only Windows Insiders will have access to Recall, and those staying outside pre-release software will have to wait even longer. However, Microsoft says the details about the public release "will be shared soon."

In addition to Recall updates and the launch of Windows 11 version 24H2 for the general public, Microsoft announced a host of new AI-powered features for Copilot+ PCs. Right now, Copilot Vision works only inside Microsoft Edge. Once enabled, when you visit a supported website, you can start asking Copilot questions regarding the content on the page as you browse. Copilot Vision can also suggest the next steps and assist with the task at hand. You can even speak your queries naturally, eliminating the need to type. Think of Copilot Vision as an expert sitting next to you, looking at your screen to help you along the way.

Microsoft designed Copilot Vision with privacy as a core principle. Copilot Vision is an entirely opt-in feature, enabled only when users explicitly choose to do so. Microsoft does not store or use any data from Copilot Vision (audio, images, text, or conversations) for model training. Once your Vision session is over, all the data will be permanently deleted.

Additionally, Copilot Vision will not work on websites with paywalls or sensitive content. During this preview phase, Microsoft is enabling Copilot Vision only on a pre-approved list of websites. Microsoft will expand Copilot Vision to more websites in the future, prioritizing safety and responsibility.

Finally, it is important to note that Copilot Vision is not an agent. It cannot take actions on your behalf; instead, it can only answer questions throughout your browsing experience.

Copilot Vision is now rolling out to a subset of Copilot Pro users in the United States. It has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with the web, providing a more intuitive and helpful browsing experience. Unlike recent Windows 11 updates, version 24H2 is a "full operating system swap," so updating to it will take more time than usual. What is going as usual is the way the update is being offered to users. Microsoft is gradually rolling out the update to "seekers" with Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. That means you need to go to the Settings app and manually request the update.

If you want to be among the first adopters, go to Settings > Windows Update and toggle on the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option. After that, check for updates—if your system is eligible and there are no blocking issues, the Settings app will allow you to download Windows 11 version 24H2. You can find more information about how to download Windows 11 version 24H2 in our guide.

Note that updating to Windows 11 version 24H2 requires the May 2024 non-security preview update and newer. As usual, you can also download Windows 11 version 24H2 images from the official website and clean-install the operating system (note that BitLocker will be turned on by default on Home and Pro editions, but you can turn it off).

All the following bugs are "blocking issues," which means Microsoft will not offer you Windows 11 version 24H2 until you apply a workaround or a fix (it may still take up to 24 hours before your computer gets the update). You can click each issue to learn more about it and its possible workaround.

Windows 11 version 24H2 has the standard 24-month lifecycle for Home and Pro editions. Windows 11 LTSC 2024, which is also available starting today, has a 10-year support lifecycle. Commercial customers can download version 24H2 through WSUS, Windows Update for Business, and the Admin Center.

Click to Do triggers when you press the Windows key and click your mouse. It scans what is displayed on the screen and offers various useful shortcuts, such as Visual Search in Bing, background blur or removal, shopping assistance, etc. It can also help you when working with text by rewriting, summarizing, or explaining. Click to Do works on any screen and in any application.

Windows Search has been criticized heavily, but Microsoft is finally fixing it with the help of AI. With the updated search, you can use natural language to find objects without knowing their exact file names. The updated search can also understand misspelled queries, find objects in photos, and more—all without an active internet connection.

The updated search will be available first in File Explorer, but Microsoft also plans to bring it to Windows Search and Settings search. The latter will help you find the necessary feature or option by describing it in your own words, such as "add my headphones."

Super Resolution in Photos will help you enhance and upscale low-resolution images by up to eight times. The Photos app will let you adjust the upscaling intensity and compare the result with the original. Microsoft also boasts that Neural Processing Units will get the job done "within seconds, for free" and without waiting "all night."

Generative Fill and Erase in Paint join the existing Cocreator capabilities in Windows 11's default image editor. With the latest update, Paint will let you select the area you want to remove.

Also, you can select an area and tell Paint using natural language what you want to add to the image. You can click "Looks good" to accept the suggestion or re-generate the result.

Finally, Microsoft updated the underlying model so it delivers better and faster results, plus its built-in moderation will ensure no harmful content is generated in Paint.

All these AI-powered features will be available exclusively on Copilot+ PCs with eligible processors from Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD. Microsoft says Windows Insiders will get to try those features later this month, and the public rollout is expected in November.

In addition to these new features, Microsoft announced the rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2 and significant Copilot upgrades, such as Copilot Vision and Copilot Think Deeper.

Summary

 

This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2.

In a Techcommunity blog post about Windows 10 Dynamic Updates, Microsoft explained Dynamic Updates in more detail regarding its various components and uses. These packages include fixes to Setup.exe binaries, SafeOS updates for Windows Recovery Environment, and more:

As soon as a Windows 10 feature update initiates, whether from media or a Windows Update service-connected environment, Dynamic Update is one of the first steps invoked. Windows 10 Setup reaches out to an Internet-facing URL hosted by Microsoft to fetch Dynamic Update content, then applies those updates to your OS installation media.

 

Content acquired includes:

 

• Setup Updates: Fixes to Setup binaries or any files that Setup uses for feature updates.
• Safe OS Updates: Fixes for the "safe OS" that are used to update Windows recovery environment (WinRE).
• Servicing Stack Updates: Fixes that are necessary to address the Windows 10 servicing stack issue and thus required to complete the feature update.
• Latest Cumulative Update: Installs the latest cumulative quality update.
• Driver Updates: Latest version of applicable drivers that have already been published by manufacturers into Windows Update and specifically targeted for Dynamic Update.

 

In addition to these updates, Dynamic Update will preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. These are not updates to LPs and FODs, but reacquisition to ensure the user has these elements present with the update completes.

These dynamic updates are not pushed through Windows Update and are only available for manual downloading from the Windows Update Catalog website. You can find it here. The update is applicable for both Arm64 and AMD64 Copilot+ PCs.

Meanwhile, the one for all user PCs could be out very soon too as Microsoft seemingly may have just teased it. And some users are also "finally" seeing snappy performance for the first time on their Windows 11 PC which is always a good sign.
