	About a year ago, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reveals-how-it-is-trying-to-improve-performance-in-its-edge-browser-with-webui-20/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft unveiled a transition from React to WebUI 2.0 for Edge</a> in an attempt to make the browser faster, especially on lower-end devices that cannot boast the fastest processors and SSDs. It all started with the introduction of WebUI 2.0 for the Browser Essentials interface in Edge 122, and now, Microsoft is supercharging more parts of its browser.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a new blog post, Microsoft <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2025/02/18/more-edge-features-get-a-performance-boost/" rel="external nofollow">announced</a> that "no less than 14" different areas of the user interface in Microsoft Edge now use WebUI 2.0 instead of React. They include components like Favorites, Browser Essentials, Downloads, and more. As a result, they load up to 40% faster than before on average. Here is an example showing Microsoft Edge opening the downloads interface over 50% faster:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">
	<div>
		<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="150" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/WDU9kFhOE0Y?feature=oembed" title="WebUI2.0 Responsiveness Improvements in Microsoft Edge Downloads UI" width="200"></iframe>
	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is another example that shows a massive performance improvement when loading Browser Essentials:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">
	<div>
		<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="113" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/avJmgfGpoJA?feature=oembed" title="React to WebUI 2.0" width="200"></iframe>
	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft says these performance improvements were made possible by minimizing the size of code bundles and the amount of unnecessarily shared code between components:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		In this project, we built an entirely new markup-first architecture that minimizes the size of our bundles of code, and the amount of JavaScript code that runs during the initialization path of the UI. This new internal UI architecture is more modular, and we now rely on a repository of web components that are tuned for performance on modern web engines.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Although Edge already has many of its UI parts based on WebUI 2.0, there are still plenty of components left to upgrade. Future Microsoft Edge updates will bring WebUI 2.0 to other important interface areas like the Settings section, print preview, Read Aloud, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	All these performance improvements are available in Microsoft Edge 132, which <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-edge-132-is-now-available-with-improved-price-tracker-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">was released in January 2025</a>. To check your Microsoft Edge version, head to <strong>edge://settings/help</strong> or <strong>edge://version</strong>. In other news, Microsoft also shipped <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/edges-built-in-game-surf-gets-a-massive-update-with-a-lot-of-cool-stuff/" rel="external nofollow">a big update for Edge's built-in </a><a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/edges-built-in-game-surf-gets-a-massive-update-with-a-lot-of-cool-stuff/" rel="external nofollow"><em>Surf</em></a> game, which now features more customization, a new game mode, reworked graphics, and more.

	Microsoft has announced in its <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/search-and-import-data-with-copilot-in-excel/4377024" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft 365 Insider blog</a> that Copilot in Excel can now reference documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF formats.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With this new feature, you can ask Copilot to display to-do items in a table or organize emails with columns for the sender and subject line. It also comes in handy when you need to combine data from different sources, such as public stats from the web, internal documents, organizational details, or tables from another Excel file.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To try this feature, you'll need Windows (Build 17729.20000 or later) or Mac (Build 24053110 or later), a Copilot license, web search enabled, and a stable internet connection. Using the new feature is as simple as the following:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ol>
		<li>
			On the <strong>Home</strong> tab in Excel, select <strong>Copilot</strong>.
		</li>
		<li>
			Ask Copilot a question about the data you are looking for.
		</li>
		<li>
			Ask follow-up questions until you're satisfied with the results.
		</li>
	</ol>

	<p class="img-center">
		<img alt="The new feature at work" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739909702_search_web_x2.gif">
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>Note</strong>: For results from external data, make sure you see reference(s) at the end of the response.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Microsoft says this update to Copilot in Excel will be coming to the web soon. There are some limitations, such as refreshable data imports only working for Excel files with tables stored on SharePoint or OneDrive and limited support for handling workbook and external data simultaneously.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Copilot in Excel has received several updates in recent months. For example, there's now <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-365-copilot-in-excel-now-allows-you-to-clean-data-with-just-one-click/" rel="external nofollow">a Clean Data feature</a> that fixes issues like text/number inconsistencies.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In March last year, Microsoft added an update that allowed users to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/the-march-2024-update-for-copilot-for-microsoft-365-includes-grounded-mobile-chat-and-more/https://www.neowin.net/news/the-march-2024-update-for-copilot-for-microsoft-365-includes-grounded-mobile-chat-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">speak with Copilot directly</a> instead of typing manually. In November, Copilot <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-365-copilot-gets-a-major-upgrade-with-several-new-capabilities/" rel="external nofollow">was integrated into the Excel start experience</a>, enabling users to explain what they want to create and receive improvement suggestions.

	If you have a PC with Windows 95 or Windows 98, bad news: AIDA64 can no longer work on it. Finalwire has released a new version of the app, and it dropped support for Microsoft's operating systems, which were released in the last millennium.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The discontinued Windows 95, 98, and Me support is not the main change in AIDA 7.60, of course, even though it is quite impressive that they were still supported. More important and relevant changes in the update include two new themes for dark mode, support for <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-9070-xt-alleged-specs-and-performance-leak-and-could-be-quite-power-hungry/" rel="external nofollow">AMD's upcoming RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards</a>, support for Nvidia's RTX 50 series (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-reveals-rtx-5070-ti-launch-date-pushes-rtx-5070-to-march/" rel="external nofollow">likely the upcoming RTX 5070 Ti, which launches later this month</a>), improvements for Intel's 800 series motherboards and Arrow Lake Chips, and more. Here is the changelog:

	While you can still use Notepad without a Microsoft account or a Microsoft 365 subscription, you need to have AI credits to use the app's Rewrite feature. Those credits come with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family plan, both of which cost money.
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft's Notepad has been around for over four decades. The simple text editor has remained largely unchanged for much of that time, though it has seen a surge in development of late. For example, Notepad now supports <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/after-40-years-notepad-is-finally-getting-this-basic-feature" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/after-40-years-notepad-is-finally-getting-this-basic-feature" rel="external nofollow">character count</a>. One constant people have been able to count on is that Notepad is free and does not require an account. Both of those have now come into question, though the situation is not as bad as it once appeared.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Notepad now includes a prompt to sign in to a Microsoft account, an addition that drew worry and criticism. But the prompt only refers to those who want to use the AI-powered Rewrite feature. You can still use Notepad without a Microsoft account or a paid Microsoft 365 plan. I've also seen a separate prompt to sign up for a Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family account when trying to use Rewrite within Notepad. Notably, both those plans require payment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You don't have to use Rewrite to use Notepad as a text editor. In fact, you can disable the feature altogether and won't even see an icon for it within Notepad. Still, the icon and prompts related to Rewrite could be viewed as ads. Trying to use Rewrite if you do not have a paid subscription will ultimately lead to a page for subscribing to Microsoft 365, or at least that's what happened in my testing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the new prompts was spotted by X users TheBobPony.

					Despite initial concerns caused by a sign in prompt, you do not need a Microsoft account to use Notepad on Windows 11. You also do not need to pay for a plan to use the application. You do, however, need both a Microsoft account and a paid plan to use Copilot features within Notepad.

							Honestly, I'm not sure if I should describe this as Microsoft requiring an account and a paid plan to use Notepad. The app works as before without a Microsoft account or a subscription, but there is now a feature that requires a paid plan. To fully unlock the app, you do need to pay and have a Microsoft account.

							I'd say the current model is best described as "freemium." The app has free features and can be used without seeing ads or having to pay to unlock features but those who want to use the full breadth of the app's features need to pay.

	This past week, Microsoft released February 2025 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5051974--kb5052000--kb5049993--kb5050013-february-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5051974 / KB5052000 / KB5052006 / KB5052040</a>) and Windows 11 (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5051987-kb5051989-february-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5051987, KB5051989</a>). Alongside them, Microsoft also released dynamic updates for all supported versions of Windows 11,ie, 24H2, 23H2, and 22H2, as well as Windows Server 2025.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, also called Safe OS updates, as well as to the Setup binaries in the form of Setup updates. The dynamic updates for Windows 11 24H2 also apply to Server 2025 as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First we have the Setup updates. Microsoft writes:

<p>
	For those who may not be aware, these Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. In a Tech Community <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/updating-windows-10-media-with-dynamic-update-packages/ba-p/982477" rel="external nofollow">blog post</a> about Windows 10 Dynamic Updates, Microsoft explained Dynamic Updates in more detail regarding its various components and uses. These packages include fixes to Setup.exe binaries, SafeOS updates for Windows Recovery Environment, and more:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		As soon as a Windows 10 feature update initiates, whether from media or a Windows Update service-connected environment, Dynamic Update is one of the first steps invoked. Windows 10 Setup reaches out to an Internet-facing URL hosted by Microsoft to fetch Dynamic Update content, then applies those updates to your OS installation media.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Content acquired includes:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Setup Updates</strong>: Fixes to Setup binaries or any files that Setup uses for feature updates.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Safe OS Updates</strong>: Fixes for the "safe OS" that are used to update Windows recovery environment (WinRE).
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In addition to these updates, Dynamic Update will preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. These are not updates to LPs and FODs, but reacquisition to ensure the user has these elements present with the update completes.
	</p>

<p>
	The Setup updates are available for manual downloading from the Windows Update Catalog website. You can find them here: <a href="http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5053424" rel="external nofollow">KB5053424</a> / <a href="http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5053485" rel="external nofollow">KB5053485</a>. Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system reaches <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/10/14/windows-10-support-ends-in-exactly-1-year-here-are-your-options/" rel="external nofollow">end of support in October 2025</a>. This means no updates anymore for the operating system, including security updates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is a problem for many users, especially for users who run systems with hardware that is not compatible with Microsoft's official list of supported hardware for Windows 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One way out of this is to extend support via ESU.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>What is ESU</strong>? Extended Security Updates were introduced by Microsoft for Windows 7. Organizations could pay Microsoft to extend support for up to three years.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For Windows 10, Microsoft widened the ESU-program to also <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/11/01/windows-10-microsoft-reveals-esu-price-tag-for-home-users-and-a-big-catch/" rel="external nofollow">include home users</a>. Microsoft charges home customers $30 for a year of extended security updates. Notably, Microsoft is limiting the offer to a single year. Business customers on the other hand may extend support for three or even more years.
</p>

<h3>
	Windows 7 ESU Bypass hack
</h3>

<p>
	Back when Microsoft announced <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2018/09/06/extended-security-updates-for-windows-7-and-longer-windows-10-servicing/" rel="external nofollow">ESU for Windows 7</a>, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2020/02/13/it-appears-that-the-windows-7-esu-bypass-is-indeed-working/" rel="external nofollow">bypasses were discovered</a> that enabled these updates on any Windows 7 machines, even home systems and devices that did not join ESU officially.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What this meant was that devices would continue to receive updates from Microsoft, even after the official end of support. These continue to work five years after Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 officially. While there are some limitations, only 64-bit Windows 7 remains supported, the bypass continues to work as to this day.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 8 did not get any ESU.
</p>

<h3>
	Windows 10 ESU-bypass
</h3>

<p>
	Windows 10 customers may <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/04/03/microsoft-reveals-windows-10-esu-pricing-starts-at-61/" rel="external nofollow">extend support</a> for one or three years, depending on whether they are a consumer or business.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Preliminary tests <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://www.deskmodder.de/blog/2025/02/15/windows-10-esu-bypass-ist-gesichert/#comments" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">show</a> that Bypass ESU is working on Windows 10 devices as well. This would unlock security updates after October 2024 on systems on which the patch is installed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The only downside, apart from the question of legality, is that Windows 10 Home updates cannot be extended for more than one year. Devices that run Windows 10 Pro on the other hand support at least three years of ESU updates in theory.
</p>

<h3>
	Closing Words
</h3>

<p>
	The end of Windows 10 support impacts millions of PC users significantly. While millions of Windows 10 PCs can be upgraded to Windows 11, tens of millions can't because of the altered system requirements of Windows 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These customers need to make a decision regarding the future of the device. ESU is one option to extend support, especially if the device is working perfectly fine. Another is to use the services of the micro-patching company 0Patch instead. For about $30 per year, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/06/28/windows-10-support-until-2030-0patch-makes-it-possible/" rel="external nofollow">0Patch promises</a> to release security patches for Windows 10 until at least 2030.
</p>

	As much as I love Windows 11 and understand that Windows 10 is going away, I 100% agree with the overwhelming majority of users that Windows 11's Start menu is not good. Even though <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-start-menu-is-getting-a-new-layout-and-microsoft-is-adding-improvements-to-it/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft is working on new Start menu layouts for Windows 11</a>, they are no match to what we had in the Windows 10 era with its flexibility, customization, and overall convenience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Fortunately, there is no need to wait for Microsoft to fix its operating system. Third-party app Windhawk is a treasure trove of useful Windows mods, and one of them lets you have Windows 11's Start menu just as it should have been in the first place: Windows 10's convenience and Windows 11's fancy design.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What I miss from the days of Windows 10 is how it allowed me to have the list of all apps and pinned tiles all on one screen with no need to switch between any views. On Windows 11, however, the Start menu defaults to an area with pinned apps and recommendations (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-finally-making-windows-11s-start-menu-more-convenient/" rel="external nofollow">that might soon go away</a>), and opening the list of all apps requires making another click. With this mod, however, you can have all your app pins at the center, the list of all apps to the left, and recommended content to the right—no more extra clicks just to find that one app in the list.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Tweaked Windows 11 Start Menu" class="ipsImage" height="333" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739656646_start_menu.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Here is what you need to have the same Start menu layout on your system:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		<a href="https://windhawk.net/download" rel="external nofollow">Download and install Windhawk from the official website</a>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Find the "Windows 11 Start Menu Styler" mod and install it.
	</li>
	<li>
		Once installed, go to the "<strong>Advanced</strong>" tab and paste the code from the "<strong>Modern Start Menu</strong>" section <a href="https://www.vinstartheme.com/modern-start-menu/" rel="external nofollow">on this page</a>. If you want the Start menu without the Recommended section, use the code from the "<strong>Start Menu without Recommended</strong>" section.
		<figure class="image image--expandable">
			<img alt="Tweaked Windows 11 Start Menu" class="ipsImage" height="315" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739656640_start_menu_1.jpg">
		</figure>
	</li>
	<li>
		Click <strong>Save</strong>, then <strong>Load</strong>.
	</li>
	<li>
		Open the Start menu and enjoy the much more convenient layout.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The best part about this thing is that it is highly customizable, and you can tweak literally every part, assuming you can figure out what each parameter and its value do. However, even as is, it is a much better alternative to the stock Windows 11 Start menu. That, of course, is if you trust third-party tweaks and mods.
</p>

	Neowin noticed that Microsoft has finally published the official support list for Windows 11 24H2 and it has, at long last, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-finally-shares-windows-11-24h2-official-cpu-support-list-adds-new-amd-ryzen-parts/" rel="external nofollow">added many pending AMD chips</a>, though several ones are still missing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over on the blue side though, the tech giant has surprisingly removed several Intel SKUs from this new list even though they should technically be supported on 24H2 as they fulfill the official <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-blocks-free-windows-11-24h2-system-requirements-bypass-app-as-potential-malware/" rel="external nofollow">system requirements criteria</a>. So as of now, Microsoft no longer supports these parts on new machines, at least on paper.
</p>

<p>

</p>

Support for 8th and 9th Gen parts (Cofee Lake) have been dropped too. We have compiled the list of removed 10th Gen, 9th Gen, and 8th Gen processors below:

	And in terms of SKUs that are new on the list, Intel has added the Core UL and HL Raptor Lake (series 1) mobile parts as well as the "Core 3 100U with IPU" to the list. Finally, Intel Atom embedded CPUs have been added.

If your Intel CPU is on the list for 24H2, the SKU should work on the previous Windows 11 versions as well.

	It has been four and a half months since <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-begins-force-updating-users-to-windows-11-version-24h2/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 version 24H2</a> hit the general availability status. Microsoft is finally starting to iron out most of the teething issues with downloading and upgrading to the new feature update. For example, the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-one-more-windows-11-24h2-update-block-you-can-download-it-now/" rel="external nofollow">Auto HDR bug</a> was fixed this week for all users, and the issue related to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-explains-how-to-update-to-windows-11-24h2-on-blocked-asus-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">Asus PCs BSODing</a> has also been relaxed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Neowin noticed today that at long last Microsoft has also released a new list of supported AMD and Intel processors for Windows 11 24H2. The company has finally added AMD's Ryzen 8000 series desktop and mobile parts, something which <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-adds-intel-but-skips-new-amd-cpus-on-windows-11-official-supported-processor-list/" rel="external nofollow">we had pointed out earlier</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, the support list is still missing <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-shares-ryzen-9950x3d-windows-11-performance-vs-9800x3d-7950x3d--intel-285k/" rel="external nofollow">Ryzen 9000 desktop</a>, and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-ryzen-ai-max-beats-nvidia-rtx-4090-apple-m4-pro-intel-ultra-9-on-windows/" rel="external nofollow">Ryzen AI Max+</a> as well as <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-ryzen-ai-300-exceeds-microsoft-copilot-pc-requirement-beats-qualcomm-apple-intel/" rel="external nofollow">300 series parts</a>. While the former was announced at CES 2025 earlier this year, the latter was released back in June last year at Computex 2024. This was even before Windows 11 24H2 was generally available and thus they should have been on the list.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We are not entirely sure who is more to blame for this, if it is AMD or Microsoft. However, this is hardly the first time that support for an AMD chip is late or strange as we pointed out above, and also previously with the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-doesnt-want-you-installing-windows-10-on-these-ryzen-pcs-despite-microsofts-support/" rel="external nofollow">Ryzen 7320U in terms of Windows 10 support</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are the new AMD CPUs that are now officially on the Windows 11 24H2 support list:

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over on the Intel side though, things have gotten trickier. Microsoft has removed several Intel processors that should in theory work on Windows 11 24H2. You can read about it in <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-windows-11-24h2-official-support-on-8th-9th-10th-gen-intel-cpus/" rel="external nofollow">this dedicated article</a>.

	So far, 2025 has been a pretty quiet year in terms of feature removal and deprecation in Windows 11. Microsoft removed quite a lot of stuff from the OS <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/every-windows-10-and-11-feature-microsoft-deprecated-in-2023/" rel="external nofollow">in 2023</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/every-windows-10-and-11-feature-microsoft-removed-or-deprecated-in-2024/" rel="external nofollow">2024</a>, and it is only now kicking the list of deprecated Windows features in 2025, with Location History being first on the way out.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft announced the end of the Location History feature in <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-dev-and-beta-build-261203281-is-out-with-recall-improvements-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">the latest Windows 11 preview build for Dev and Beta insiders</a>. In a nutshell, <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/windows.devices.geolocation.geolocator.getgeopositionhistoryasync?view=winrt-26100" rel="external nofollow">this API</a> is responsible for collecting and storing your device's location data for the last 24 hours. Cortana and other apps with the corresponding access to the API can get stored location data without requesting new positions (the API is limited to 3,600 positions) and provide users with relevant information, recommendations, geo-based reminders, etc.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Microsoft says about the upcoming change:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		We are deprecating and removing the Location History feature, an API that allowed Cortana to access 24 hours of device history when location was enabled. With the removal of the Location History feature, location data will no longer be saved locally and the corresponding settings will also be removed from the Privacy &amp; Security &gt; Location page in Settings.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	As of right now, you can find Location History and related options in <strong>Settings &gt; Privacy &amp; Security &gt; Location</strong>. Note that the change will not affect Windows 11's ability to receive your device location to provide relevant information. The only change is that data is no longer stored.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some of the other recently deprecated features include <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-kills-a-handy-windows-11-feature-that-allowed-quick-calls-or-event-creation/" rel="external nofollow">Suggested Actions</a> (really handy, but, apparently, barely used by anyone feature), <a href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-install-paint-3d-on-windows-10-and-11/" rel="external nofollow">Paint3D</a>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-kills-legacy-drm-support-on-windows-media-player-windows-7-8-silverlight/" rel="external nofollow">Legacy DRM services</a>, and more. You can find the entire list of deprecated Windows features in the official documentation <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/deprecated-features" rel="external nofollow">here</a>.

	A few days back, Microsoft lifted the upgrade block for the 2024 feature update for Windows 11, version 24H2 that was placed as a result of Auto HDR issues. You can find the details about it <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-one-more-windows-11-24h2-update-block-you-can-download-it-now/" rel="external nofollow">here in this dedicated article</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Following that, Microsoft has confirmed another such issue has been resolved. Back in October last year, the tech giant had blocked Windows 11 24H2 on <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-explains-why-it-has-blocked-windows-11-24h2-on-some-asus-pcs/" rel="external nofollow">some Asus PCs</a>. Such systems were running into a blue screen of death (BSOD) error when trying to perform the upgrade.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While Microsoft has stated that the safeguard is still in place, the company has also assured that it will be lifted slowly but surely. However, what exactly caused the issue has still not been explained.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The update is being pushed via a BIOS update on the affected Asus laptop models, X415KA and X515KA. However, users will not have to worry about manually updating the firmware as it is being pushed via the Windows Update channel.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft explains:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>Resolution</strong>:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		This issue has been resolved with a BIOS update provided by ASUS. Devices with ASUS models X415KA and X515KA running a BIOS version lower than 311 will need to install the latest BIOS update to remove the safeguard and proceed with the Windows 11, version 24H2 upgrade. The BIOS update is categorized as a Critical Update (CU) and is available through Windows Update.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		While the safeguard remains in place, it will gradually be lifted as more devices receive the update. Users are advised to check for updates in Settings &gt; Windows Update and install all available updates to ensure compatibility with Windows 11, version 24H2.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	You can find the issue <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24H2#3424msgdesc" rel="external nofollow">here</a> on the Windows health dashboard page on Microsoft's official website.

	Microsoft has released a big new build for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel and Beta Channel (24H2). Version 26120.3281 is now available for download with various improvements for OneDrive, Recall, taskbar, and other parts of the operating system.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is the changelog:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		<strong>New features gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on</strong>

		<strong>Ability to seamlessly resume OneDrive files in 1-click from your phone to PC</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We are gradually rolling out the ability to seamlessly resume working on OneDrive files from your phone (iOS and Android) on your Windows 11 PC with a single click. With this feature, you will get a notification asking you if you want to pick up where you left off editing a OneDrive file like a Word doc that you last viewed or edited on your phone within a 5-minute time window preceding unlocking your PC.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	</figure>

	<p>
		Upon clicking on this notification, the same file that you were viewing or editing previously on your phone will open in your default browser on your PC.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Here are some important details about how this feature works:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			This feature works only when signing into OneDrive with a Microsoft account. Work and school accounts are not supported. And you need to be using the same Microsoft account signing into OneDrive on your phone and signing into your Windows 11 PC.
		</li>
		<li>
			This feature supports Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, OneNote notebooks/pages, and PDFs.
		</li>
		<li>
			The OneDrive file must be opened on your phone when your PC is locked. If you then unlock your PC within 5 minutes of accessing the file on your phone, you will receive the resume notification as noted above.
		</li>
		<li>
			For the best experience using this feature, you should be logged into OneDrive in your default browser on your PC.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		This feature can be managed and turned off via Settings &gt; Apps &gt; Resume.
	</p>

Inline messaging will now appear when you accidentally invoke the Snap Bar when dragging an app to the top middle of your desktop or Snap Flyout when hovering over the Minimize or Maximize button of an app. This messaging is designed to provide guidance on snapping app windows and educating users on the keyboard shortcuts for quickly snapping app windows in the future. As part of this work, we have also updated the logic for the “Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in” setting via Settings &gt; Accounts &gt; Sign in options, so that when you enable this, we will automatically enable the File Explorer specific setting for you too.
		</li>
		<li>

		<li>
			We’re beginning to roll out some additional changes to the Desktop Spotlight icon for Windows Insiders to help with discoverability including changes to the icon color/backplate and moving the icon to the bottom right position on your desktop.

	</ul>

	<p>

		<strong>[Settings]</strong>
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>

	Hector Martin cites burnout, and Rust for Linux oppostion, in resigning.
</h3>

<p>
	Working at the intersection of Apple's newest hardware and Linux kernel development, for the benefit of a free distribution, was <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/03/asahi-linux-is-already-running-on-the-mac-studios-new-m1-ultra-chip/" rel="external nofollow">never going to be easy</a>. But it's been an especially hard couple of weeks for Hector Martin, project lead for Asahi Linux, capping off years of what he describes as burnout, user entitlement, and political battles within the Linux kernel community about Rust code.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a post on his site, "<a href="https://marcan.st/2025/02/resigning-as-asahi-linux-project-lead/" rel="external nofollow">Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead</a>," Martin summarizes his history with hardware hacking projects, including his time with the Wii homebrew scene (Team Twiizers/<a href="https://wiibrew.org/wiki/Fail0verflow" rel="external nofollow">fail0verflow</a>), which had its share of insistent users desperate to play pirated games. Martin shifted his focus, and when Apple unveiled its own silicon with the M1 series, Martin writes, "I realized that making it run Linux was my dream project." This time, there was no jailbreaking and a relatively open, if tricky, platform.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Support and donations came quickly. The first two years saw rapid advancement of a platform built "from scratch, with zero vendor support or documentation." Upstreaming code to the Linux kernel, across "practically every Linux subsystem," was an "<em>incredibly</em> frustrating experience" (emphasis Martin's).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Then came the users demanding to know when Thunderbolt, monitors over USB-C, M3/M4 support, and even CPU temperature checking would appear. Donations and pledges slowly decreased while demands increased. "It seemed the more things we accomplished, the less support we had," Martin writes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Martin cites personal complications, along with stalking and harassment, as slowing down work through 2024, while Vulkan drivers and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/apple/2024/10/asahi-linuxs-bespoke-gpu-driver-is-running-windows-games-on-apple-silicon-macs/" rel="external nofollow">an emulation stack</a> still shipped. Simultaneously, issues with pushing Rust code into the Linux kernel were brewing. Rust was "the entire reason our GPU driver was able to succeed in the time it did," Martin writes. Citing <a href="https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/nova-a-rust-based-linux-driver-for-nvidia-gpus-announced/" rel="external nofollow">the Nova driver for Nvidia GPUs</a> as an example, Martin writes that "More modern programming languages are better suited to writing drivers for more modern hardware with more complexity and novel challenges, unsurprisingly."
</p>

<h2>
	Rust may not sleep, but moves slow
</h2>

<p>
	Rust is <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/03/linus-torvalds-weighs-in-on-rust-language-in-the-linux-kernel/" rel="external nofollow">a far more memory-safe coding language</a> than the Linux kernel's native C. But getting more than 1,700 maintainers, including branch bosses, to accept Rust code after decades of work in C is <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/09/rust-in-linux-lead-retires-rather-than-deal-with-more-nontechnical-nonsense/" rel="external nofollow">no small feat</a>. Linux lead Linus Torvalds has shifted ever-so-slightly from <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/03/linus-torvalds-weighs-in-on-rust-language-in-the-linux-kernel/" rel="external nofollow">a "wait and see" approach in 2021</a> to noting in the summer of 2024 that he expected Rust updates to be faster while admitting that it's largely kernel developers' familiarity with C standing in the way. At that time, Microsoft engineer Wedson Almeida Filho resigned from the Rust for Linux project, citing "nontechnical nonsense" as the motivation.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That conflict between the energy of <a href="https://rust-for-linux.com/" rel="external nofollow">Rust for Linux</a> contributors and the strictures of kernel practices collided once more this winter in an early January kernel mailing list thread about a patch with the deceptively non-controversial name "<a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2025/1/8/801" rel="external nofollow">Add dma coherent allocator abstraction</a>."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Kernel maintainer Christoph Hellwig opposed a patch that would have allowed drivers written in Rust to access the Direct Memory Access (DMA) API. "No rust code in kernel/dma, please," <a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2025/1/8/951" rel="external nofollow">Hellwig wrote</a>. After some back-and-forth about suggested alternatives, Hellwig <a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2025/1/10/370" rel="external nofollow">comes out with it</a>: "Don't force me to deal with your shiny language of the day. Maintaining multi-language projects is a pain I have no interest in dealing with." A <a href="https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20250128092334.GA28548@lst.de/" rel="external nofollow">later post</a> by Hellwig pushed further, and his attempt to clarify that it was "a cross-language codebase" he was comparing to "cancer," not just Rust, did not likely soften its impact.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Martin, among others, was frustrated and <a href="https://archive.is/rESxe" rel="external nofollow">posted on Mastodon to that effect</a>. This led to kernel list discussion about Martin's "grandstanding, brigading, playing to the crowd, streamer drama creation or any of that." Martin (who, <a href="https://social.kernel.org/objects/bc76c16e-8a24-4b68-aa1d-ecc603f6e75d" rel="external nofollow">like others</a>, took issue with the "brigading" accusation) responded that, "If shaming on social media does not work, then tell me what does, because I'm out of ideas." (Ars is, despite how much is quoted, doing a lot of summarizing here).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"How about you accept that maybe the problem is you," <a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2025/2/6/1292" rel="external nofollow">Torvalds responds</a>. "You think you know better. But the current process works. It has problems, but problems are a fact of life. There is no perfect."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Torvalds—who has <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/science/elements/after-years-of-abusive-e-mails-the-creator-of-linux-steps-aside" rel="external nofollow">some history with out-of-scope responses</a>, and <a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/9/16/167" rel="external nofollow">worked to address them</a>—suggests that if there are issues in kernel development, "social media sure as hell isn't the solution. The same way it sure as hell wasn't the solution to politics."
</p>

<h2>
	Moving on
</h2>

<p>
	Martin <a href="https://lkml.org/lkml/2025/2/7/9" rel="external nofollow">removed himself from the maintainers list</a> (<a href="https://www.phoronix.com/news/Apple-Silicon-New-Co-Maintainer" rel="external nofollow">merged by Torvalds himself</a>), with Sven Peter and Janne Grunau stepping up. In announcing his resignation from Asahi Linux, Martin answered as to "why we can't just let the Rust situation play out on its own over a longer period of time," keeping their work downstream until things smooth out. Developer morale, a suggested "lack of interest" a hard fork might imply, and the heavy maintenance work of maintaining such a fork that each new upstream kernel brings would all endanger both Asahi and the progress of Rust.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Martin, in an email to Ars, affirmed that he imagines himself contributing to Asahi in the future, just not as a leader. "At least I should get the Mac Pro I have sitting at home working, I don't think it's worth shipping that behemoth over to another continent just for someone else to figure out how to get the PCIe to work!"
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ars has reached out to Hellwig and Torvalds for comment and will update this post with any response.

	Did you know that Microsoft Edge has a built-in game? It is called <em>Surf</em>, and it is a throwback to the legendary <em>SkiFree</em> game, which was released for Windows 3.0 nearly four decades ago. When launching Edge Chromium in 2020, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-edges-surf-minigame-is-now-available-to-everyone/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft replaced Google Chrome's <em>Dino</em> game with <em>Surf</em></a>, giving users a more fun and rich game to kill time when stuck offline or bored at work (it helps me deal with writer's block).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, <a href="https://x.com/MasterDevwi/status/1890474882183622842" rel="external nofollow">William Devereux</a>, Senior Product Manager at Microsoft Edge, has announced a big update for <em>Surf.</em> It is a major update with quite a lot of changes, which is a rare sight for stuff like this. After all, <em>Surf </em>is all about killing time when waiting for the internet connection to come back, but Microsoft still wants you to have fun.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With the latest update, <em>Surf </em>received remastered graphics (you can revert to the old version), themes, character customization, a new mode, improved navigation, and a new high score tracker. Here is the changelog:
</p>

<p>

</p>

		</li>
		<li>

		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>High Score</strong>: Track your progress toward your high score with the new progress bar. Can you fill up the bar and beat your high score?
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The updated <em>Surf</em> game is now available in all Microsoft Edge versions. You can launch it by navigating to <strong>edge://surf</strong>.

This isn't a completely new idea, I've previously covered a third-party plugin that offered similar functionality.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			The difference here, though, and it's an important one, is that it looks far simpler to use for those who aren't so familiar with winget. With the plugin I've been using, you still need to know basic winget syntax and type it out to execute the commands. With this official integration, it looks like all you'll need to do is search for what you want to install, and simply install it. No additional commands required.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			This is pretty huge, and yet one more reason to abandon using the Microsoft Store app or the web browser to get your software. Winget doesn't host anything, it merely runs from a manifest which tells the tool where on the internet to go and get the files needed. Even from the Microsoft Store, if that's where they live.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Probably the only thing I don't like about using winget is the clunky syntax for installing packages. For example, on Ubuntu the command would be <em>"apt install gimp"</em> whereas on winget it's <em>"winget install gimp.gimp."</em> It's just not quite as intuitive. This new integration with PowerToys looks like it'll be super simple, and I'm looking forward to trying it out.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Alas, there's no timeline on when it might be released, but the PowerToys team usuallu pushes out an update at least once a month, so hopefully it's not too far away.
		</p>

	Clipchamp has a cleaner interface for editing videos and some handy new features following a recent update.
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft's free video editor, Clipchamp, has a handful of welcome features on the way. The updated video editor will support switching between dark and light mode, feature improved asset grouping, and have a cleaner video editor. Clipchamp will also gain timestamp support, which should all more precise editing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new Clipchamp features are rolling out to those using a Clipchamp Personal account this month. Those using a Work account should receive the new features in March. Microsoft announced the new features in a recent <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/make-video-editing-simpler-with-new-updates-to-clipchamp/4374346" href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/make-video-editing-simpler-with-new-updates-to-clipchamp/4374346" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Tech Community post</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I've included the full list of changes shared by Microsoft below. My favorite addition is timestamp support. Most of the videos I make appear on social media, so I need to trim them to specific lengths and make cuts that sync with music. Doing so will be a bit easier after the update. I also appreciate the cleaner video editing experience that comes as a result of the changes.

			Clipchamp is the default video editor on Windows 11. It's also available on the web and has an iOS app. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not made an Android version of Clipchamp yet, despite having purchased Clipchamp in 2021.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Clipchamp is a basic video editor designed to have a low learning curve. It's not meant to compete with Da Vinci Resolve or paid options like Adobe Premiere Pro. "Create videos with a few clicks in Clipchamp, the easy video editor by Microsoft," reads the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9p1j8s7ccwwt?hl=en-us&amp;gl=us" href="https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9p1j8s7ccwwt?hl=en-us&amp;gl=us" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">app's description on the Microsoft Store</a>.

			I've used Clipchamp for years to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/everyone-asked-how-i-edit-my-videos-and-i-actually-use-the-best-kept-secret-microsoft-app-and-its-free" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/everyone-asked-how-i-edit-my-videos-and-i-actually-use-the-best-kept-secret-microsoft-app-and-its-free" rel="external nofollow">make highlight reels</a> for my American football team and to keep up to date with what's new in the app. The drag-and-drop interface is similar to what you're likely used to if you edit videos on a smartphone.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			While the app isn't as powerful as other options on Windows 11, it does have features required to make more complex content, such as a multi-layered timeline, green screen support, and subtitle generation. The app also supports AI templates and AI voice generation. Some of Clipchamp's features require you to have a paid subscription but the free version is solid and feature rich. If you have a Microsoft 365 account, you'll get some extra perks in Clipchamp.

Dark and light mode ensures a comfortable editing environment and suits different preferences, whether you are working during the day or night. The Clipchamp interface will automatically shift to dark or light mode based on your device settings. It can also be manually changed by selecting <strong>Settings</strong> &gt; <strong>General</strong>.

					The new and improved grouping functionality allows you to select multiple elements, such as music, text, and visuals, and group or collapse them into one track item. Previously, grouping would link selected track items and keep them displayed as they were. This new functionality simplifies the timeline layout, allowing you to create sections or chapters in your video, shift them around the timeline with ease, and keep everything in the group in place. The group’s thumbnail shows the type and number of items each group contains, and the visual items in the group can still be edited or deleted from the stage, providing both flexibility and organization in your editing process. To use this capability, select the items you’d like to group, then right click and select <strong>Group</strong>.

	Microsoft has released a new Release Preview build for Windows 11 Insiders. The new build, 22631.4969, under KB5052094, fixes a File Explorer performance issue related to context menus, improves backup and lock screen, resolves a DWM bug, and more. The full changelog is given below:

		The following features and improvements might not be available to all users because they will <strong>roll out gradually</strong>. Text bolded in brackets indicate the area of the change being documented.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>

		</li>
	</ul>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>[Windows Spotlight]</strong>

			<ul>
				<li>
					<strong><em>New!</em></strong> There’s a quick and easy way to find out more information about a background image. Simply hover over the image or click the “Learn about this picture” icon.
				</li>
				<li>
					<strong><em>New! </em></strong>This update makes Windows Spotlight easier to find. You’ll notice changes to the icon color and background. Also, the icon will show at the lower right area on your desktop.

Use the comma (,) to jump to the start of an item (large table, long list, or another item.) Use the period (.) to jump to the end of an item. This is most helpful when you read long emails, news articles, and wiki pages. Jump to lists (l) allows you to quickly access a list on a web page or in a document. To use these new functions, turn on Narrator first (Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter). Then turn scan mode on by pressing Caps lock + Spacebar. Note that scan mode is on by default on most web pages (like news articles, wiki page, and so on).
		</li>
	</ul>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>[Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers]</strong> <strong><em>New!</em></strong> Some of you might see a new referral card for a PC Game Pass subscription on the Settings home page. With it, you can invite friends and family to try a PC Game Pass for free. If you qualify, the card only appears when you sign in to your PC using your Microsoft account.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>[File Explorer] </strong>

			<ul>
				<li>
					<strong><em>New!</em></strong> You can now snooze or turn off the “Start backup” reminder in the File Explorer address bar. This only applies if you are not already backing up your files and folder. To view this new option, right-click <strong>Start backup</strong>.
				</li>
				<li>
					Fixed: When you enter a URL in the address bar, it might not go to the location.
				</li>
				<li>
					Fixed: The address bar overlaps files when you use the F11 full-screen mode.
				</li>
				<li>
					Fixed: The context menu opens slowly when you right-click cloud files.
				</li>
				<li>
					Thumbnails for cloud files display more consistently in search results.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
	</ul>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>[Start menu]</strong> Fixed: The colors are wrong when you open the account manager flyout menu. This occurs when you use a mixed dark and light custom mode in <strong>Settings</strong> &gt; <strong>Personalization</strong> &gt; <strong>Colors</strong>.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>[Mouse]</strong> Fixed: In <strong>Settings</strong> &gt; <strong>Accessibility</strong> &gt; <strong>Mouse pointer and touch</strong>, you can choose a color for the mouse that is not the default. PassMark, a popular and reliable benchmarking software, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/userbenchmark/" rel="external nofollow">unlike UserBenchmark</a>, has shared some interesting data regarding the performance of Windows PCs in 2025. On its official X handle, the firm shared data that shows a significant downtick in average CPU performance trend.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When sharing this result, PassMark is a bit baffled by the figure as something like this has not happened before, leading to speculation of what may be the reason, including the move from Windows 10 to 11 perhaps leading to lower performance, or the addition of more potential bloatware in the latest systems.

	For those wondering how PassMark obtains these numbers from its PerformanceTest baseline scores that are uploaded by users running the benchmark, the company explains:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		This graph showing year on year performance is made up of thousands of PerformanceTest benchmark results and is updated bi-weekly (i.e. every two weeks). The chart is composed of data from PerformanceTest V5 to the V11. PerformanceTest V8 (released 2012) was the first version to collect single thread performance.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		.. This graph counts the baselines submitted to us during these time period and therefore is representative of CPUs tested during this time.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Despite Microsoft's best efforts to convince that Windows 11 is faster than Windows 10, even <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-paid-study-shows-windows-11-is-just-way-too-fast-compared-to-windows-10/" rel="external nofollow">citing somewhat silly paid studies</a>, Neowin did not find any notable improvements on 11 vs 10, neither on an <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-vs-windows-11-in-place-upgrade-intel-i9-14900k-benchmarked/" rel="external nofollow">in-place upgrade</a> nor a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/clean-installed-windows-10-22h2-vs-windows-11-23h2-benchmarked-for-performance/" rel="external nofollow">clean install</a>. In fact, Windows 10 often came out on top.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We also repeated the same exercise recently for <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/windows_11_23h2_vs_24h2/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 24H2 vs 23H2</a> to see the kind of progress Microsoft is making.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By digging more into the details, PassMark noticed that the majority of people are not going beyond eight cores and seem to be content with that level of performance.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedOther" contenteditable="false">
	<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="ipsEmbed_finishedLoading" data-controller="core.front.core.autosizeiframe" data-embedid="embed6216284102" src="https://nsaneforums.com/index.php?app=core&amp;module=system&amp;controller=embed&amp;url=https://twitter.com/PassMarkInc/status/1889475953971310676?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1889475953971310676%257Ctwgr%255E9ea263274d299ae8d7346c5deee305582eff7e6e%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url=https://www.neowin.net/news/poor-pc-performance-in-2025-leads-to-windows-11-vs-windows-10-culprit-speculation/" style="overflow: hidden; height: 928px;"></iframe>
</div>

<p>
	To be fair to users, most games still fail to utilize beyond 16 processor threads and the rising popularity of high-resolution gaming also means that the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/editorials/its-2024-and-an-rtx-4090-on-1080p720p-is-still-the-right-way-to-test-gaming-cpus/" rel="external nofollow">CPU is less of a bottleneck</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On the non-gaming side, a lot more software nowadays is reliant on hardware acceleration that the GPU can provide which again means that higher core count CPUs probably don't make the most sense.
</p>

	In a <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/make-video-editing-simpler-with-new-updates-to-clipchamp/4374346" rel="external nofollow">recent post </a>on the Microsoft 365 Insider Blog, Redmond announced new updates coming to Clipchamp, its <a href="https://clipchamp.com/en/" rel="external nofollow">"quick and easy"</a> video editing tool. Users on a personal account will start seeing the updates this month, while those on a work account will get them next month.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When you get the update, the first major change you’ll probably notice is the ability to switch between light and dark mode. As expected, Clipchamp will comply with your system settings, but you can override that under <strong>General</strong> in the in-app settings.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="A screenshot of the feature" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739392499_dark_and_light_mode_microsoft_clipchamp.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	The editing interface, likely the most used part of Clipchamp, is getting a redesign that Microsoft claims is aimed at making the interface "simplistic and beginner-friendly." Notable changes focus on making navigation more straightforward.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The sidebar and timeline can now be collapsed, zooming in and out on the timeline is more precise, and full-screen playback is available. Undo and redo actions have been adjusted for better control, aspect ratios can be changed as needed, and AI-generated captions are now an option for videos.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p class="img-center">
	<img alt="A screenshot of the feature" class="ipsImage" height="406" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739392519_simplified_editor_microsoft_clipchamp.gif">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Still on editing, Microsoft has added timestamps in this version of Clipchamp. Now, when you place your cursor on the timeline, a timestamp of your position in the video will pop up.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	To make it easier to manage elements in a Clipchamp project, Microsoft is improving the grouping functionality for assets. With the update, after selecting elements like music, text, or images, you can right-click and select <strong>Group</strong> to combine them into one track item.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p class="img-center">
	<img alt="The asset grouping feature" class="ipsImage" height="398" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/02/1739392222_asset_grouping_microsoft_clipchamp.jpg">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Grouped assets are also represented on the timeline with a thumbnail and additional details, including the number of elements in a group and an itemized count by type.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Clipchamp has come a long way since Microsoft acquired it in 2021. Since then, the platform has received features like the <strong>AI suggestion</strong> button, which <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-clipchamp-video-editing-tool-adds-a-fast-way-to-remove-long-silences/" rel="external nofollow">highlights silent parts of a video</a> that users can choose to delete, and another feature that lets users <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-clipchamp-adds-audio-recording-and-text-to-speech-editing-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">insert audio recordings into videos</a>.

	Microsoft has released so many Copilot-Apps and services in the past that it is difficult to keep track of them all. Last year, the company announced that it would split Copilot from Windows by <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/07/02/microsoft-is-evolving-copilot-in-windows-11-by-downgrading-it/" rel="external nofollow">changing it into an app</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This approach removed the one and only reason for many Windows users to give Copilot a preference over the myriads of other AI-tools and services: the ability to control Windows features. Granted, the Windows-specific functionality <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/11/04/windows-copilot-is-still-dumb-like-a-rock/" rel="external nofollow">was not impressive</a>, but it had the potential of becoming a useful feature. Imagine running into a problem, telling Copilot about it, and the AI solving the problem on its own.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new Copilot app works like the web-version of the AI service, which means there is little incentive to favor it over the web service. In fact, there are good reasons not to use the app and run AI services in a browser. Content blocking is just one which comes to mind.
</p>

<h2>
	Copilot autostarting with Windows
</h2>

<figure aria-describedby="caption-attachment-207009" class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_207009" style="width: 680px">
	<img alt="Copilot App autostart" class="ipsImage" decoding="async" height="720" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/copilot-windows-app-autostart.jpg">

<p>
	Eagle-eyed Windows detective <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://x.com/phantomofearth/status/1889060797055488295" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Phantom of Earth</a> discovered that the latest Copilot App test version for Insiders contains autostart functionality. It is version 1.25014.121.0.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You may remember that Microsoft <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/01/12/microsoft-configures-windows-copilot-to-launch-automatically-on-certain-setups/" rel="external nofollow">made the same move</a> in the old Copilot for Windows. It was also set to open when Windows starts automatically, at least on some devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Naturally, this means that the app is set to autostart. In other words, Microsoft wants the app to run on launch and therefore in the background. There is a good chance that this want runs opposite to what many Windows users want.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows users who do not want that can disable the autostart functionality in the following way:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Launch the Copilot application.
	</li>
	<li>
		Select Settings
	</li>
	<li>
		Click on "Auto start on login" and make sure the checkmark is removed.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This takes care of the autostarting behavior. Note that you may also use other means, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2021/08/19/autoruns-14-0-released-dark-theme-support-for-the-windows-autostart-manager/" rel="external nofollow">Autoruns for example</a>, to tame the Copilot app and any other software that is misbehaving in this way.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Task Manager functionality is severely limited, and therefore not a good option to control startup items on Windows PCs.
</p>

<h3>
	Closing Words
</h3>

<p>
	It is a good idea to check startup items on Windows devices regularly, as there is always the chance that a developer enables the autostart of an app automatically. There is a chance, slim as it may be, that Microsoft won't set the next stable version of the Copilot app to autostart with the operating system.
