	Back in December 2024, 0patch had issued an <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/all-windows-11-10-server-versions-affected-by-a-new-zero-day-unofficial-patch-out/" rel="external nofollow">unofficial patch for an NTLM-related vulnerability</a>. A CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) ID was later issued for it in February 2025 by Microsoft as CVE-2025-21377.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A similar NTLM flaw has again been discovered, and 0patch has issued new micropatches for the same. About the new vulnerability, the 0patch team explains:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		While patching a SCF File NTLM hash disclosure issue on our security-adopted Windows versions, our researchers discovered a related vulnerability on all Windows Workstation and Server versions from Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 to the latest Windows 11 v24H2 and Server 2025.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The vulnerability allows an attacker to obtain user's NTLM credentials by having the user view a malicious file in Windows Explorer - e.g., by opening a shared folder or USB disk with such file, or viewing the Downloads folder where such file was previously automatically downloaded from attacker's web page.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	As you can see, this new zero-day affects almost all versions of Windows, including Windows Server 2025, which was not initially included in the list of affected Windows versions last time. The firm <a href="https://blog.0patch.com/2025/03/scf-file-ntlm-hash-disclosure.html" rel="external nofollow">notes</a>:

	Microsoft itself understands the drawbacks of NTLM or New Technology LAN Manager when it comes to security. It is also why the company has already announced the death of the feature and has recommended users and organizations move on to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-confirms-ntlm-is-dead-beyond-windows-11-24h2-and-server-2025/" rel="external nofollow">more secure and modern alternatives</a>.

	Recently, we published a couple of major printer-related news. First, it was the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/like-hp-and-canon-brother-now-under-fire-over-alleged-third-party-printer-ink-manipulation/" rel="external nofollow">Brother printer ink manipulation allegations</a> similar to ones HP and Canon have faced in the past, and second, it was USB dual mode printers (those that support both USB print and IPP Over USB) printing gibberish due to a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5050092-makes-usb-printers-print-gibberish-microsoft-shares-group-policy-fix/" rel="external nofollow">bad Windows 11 23H2 / 22H2 update</a>. The latter was caused by the January 2025 optional non-security preview update, and Microsoft shared a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5050092-makes-usb-printers-print-gibberish-microsoft-shares-group-policy-fix/" rel="external nofollow">group policy fix to work around the issue</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now with the <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-windows-11-22h223h2-kb5053657-with-new-features-and-improvements/" rel="external nofollow">latest such update (KB5053657)</a> released yesterday, Microsoft says that it has resolved the bug. Additionally, it has also shared Group Policies that need to be deployed for enterprise PCs. Microsoft writes:

	Microsoft replaced the classic Notepad text editor on Windows 11 with an advanced version featuring new features such <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/01/23/how-to-get-notepad-with-tabs-in-the-stable-version-of-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">as tabs</a> and <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/11/08/heres-a-closer-look-at-rewrite-ai-in-notepad/" rel="external nofollow">AI integrations</a>. Not every Windows user likes the change. Some prefer the old snappy version of Notepad instead.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>The problem:</strong> When you launch Notepad on Windows 11, for instance from the Start menu or runbox, the new Notepad application is launched.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What Microsoft does not tell you is that the classic Notepad application is still onboard. You can restore it with just a few basic steps, which I will outline below.
</p>

<h2>
	How to restore classic Notepad on Windows 11
</h2>

<p>
	<img alt="Classic Windows 11 Notepad application" class="ipsImage" decoding="async" fetchpriority="high" height="720" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/classic-notepad-windows-11.png">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Note</strong>:  This methods works on all recent versions of Windows 11, including Windows 11, version 24H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Here are the steps:</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Open the Start menu.
	</li>
	<li>
		Select Settings to launch the Settings application.
	</li>
	<li>
		Navigate to Apps &gt; Advanced App settings &gt; App execution aliases.
	</li>
	<li>
		Scroll down the list until you find Notepad.
	</li>
	<li>
		Toggle the alias to Off with a click.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is all that is required. You can now launch classic Notepad again on the system. Try it out by launching the runbox with the shortcut Windows-R, typing notepad.exe, and pressing the Enter-key on the keyboard.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Disable new Notepad" class="ipsImage" decoding="async" height="720" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/disable-new-notepad.png">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You should notice that the classic Notepad application is launched. A key indicator is that you get a "a new version of Notepad is available" notification at the top of the interface. A click on the close icon removes the notification.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Tip</strong>: right-click on the Notepad icon on the Windows taskbar and select the "pin to taskbar" option to quickly access it with a click on the permanent icon on the taskbar.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Note</strong>: you can still launch the new Notepad application. Just open the Start menu, type Notepad and press enter. This should launch the new application. You can use programs like <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2022/08/25/uninstall-windows-apps-for-all-users-in-bulk-with-oo-appbuster/" rel="external nofollow">O&amp;O AppBuster</a> to remove it, if you do not need it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Did you know:</strong> you can also <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2024/10/07/how-to-restore-the-wordpad-text-editor-in-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">restore WordPad on Windows 11</a>. The rich text editor was removed recently by Microsoft.
</p>

<h3>
	Closing Words
</h3>

<p>
	There is a good chance that Microsoft is removing the option in future versions of the Windows operating system. Until then at least, you can continue running the classic version of Notepad on your Windows PCs.
</p>

	Earlier this month, Microsoft removed a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-a-windows-11-24h2-update-block-download-now-available-to-more-users/" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 24H2 upgrade block related to gaming</a>. Sadly for those who were affected by a <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-confirms-even-more-windows-11-24h2-bugs-audio-output-is-now-affected/" rel="external nofollow">Dirac Audio-related issue</a>, Microsoft today "confirmed" that it has not been able to resolve the bug. The company had opened this issue back in December 2024 when it put the compatibility safeguard hold in place.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft had explained:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		A compatibility safeguard hold has been applied to a limited set of devices from one manufacturer due to an audio issue following the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2. This issue was observed on some devices containing Dirac Audio with the cridspapo.dll file.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		..
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, some users reported that their device’s integrated speakers, Bluetooth speakers, and Bluetooth headsets stopped functioning. They also reported that both first-party and third-party applications didn’t recognize these devices.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		..
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		These devices will not be offered to install Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Update channel until this issue is resolved. IT administrators using Windows Update for Business reports can check this issue using its safeguard ID: 54283088.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	However, even after all this time, Microsoft has not been able to resolve the issue, as the status of the bug has now been changed to "confirmed" from "mitigated". Thus, users affected by this problem will have to wait longer. It seems the driver that was supposed to fix the issue is not yet out, so perhaps the fault is not entirely Microsoft's either. You can find the issue <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24H2#3465msgdesc" rel="external nofollow">here</a> on Microsoft's Windows Health Dashboard site.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the rare case that you have still not been offered Windows 11 24H2 without any compatibility block, you can try this <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/update-to-windows-11-24h2-immediately-with-this-official-registrygroup-policy-hack/" rel="external nofollow">Registry/Group Policy hack to update immediately</a>.

	Microsoft and Veeam are investigating a known issue that triggers connection errors on Windows 11 24H2 systems when restoring from Veeam Recovery Media.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These recovery problems affect users trying to restore data from media created on devices running Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100.3194) or higher. While the root cause behind the issue is unknown, Veeam <a href="https://www.veeam.com/kb4726" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">says</a> that the most likely cause is a change within the <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/help/5051987" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">KB5051987 Windows 11 24H2 February update</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On impacted systems, the Veeam Agent for Windows will display network connection failures when attempting to restore files from a Veeam Backup &amp; Replication backup server or an SMB network share.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Connection problems. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Failed to establish connection: no valid IP addresses were found. Unable to establish authenticated dient-server connection. A call to SSPI failed, see inner exception. The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted," the error says when trying to recover data from a server.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When restoring from a folder shared over SMB, the users will see a "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute" error.

	As a temporary workaround, while Microsoft and Veeam are currently investigating this known issue and looking for a fix, users impacted by this issue are advised to recover their computer or data using Veeam Recovery Media generated from a device running older builds of Windows 11, build 26100.3037 or lower.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"The Veeam Recovery Media is based on the Microsoft Windows RE and contains proprietary components of the Windows operating system. As such, Veeam cannot provide a pre-generated Veeam Recovery Media image," <a href="https://www.veeam.com/kb4726" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Veeam said</a> in an advisory published on Tuesday.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Generally speaking, the Veeam Recovery Media from one machine can be used to perform bare metal restores of another. However, the proprietary drivers that may be needed to initialize hardware (network, wireless, RAID controller, etc.) may be missing if the original machine used to generate the recovery media has different drivers."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Veeam, its products are used by <a href="https://www.veeam.com/company/press-release/veeam-the-worlds-1-leader-in-data-resilience-launches-new-enterprise-capabilities-in-veeam-data-platform-v12-3-including-microsoft-entra-id-protection.html" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">over 550,000 customers</a> worldwide, including 82% of Fortune 500 and 74% of all Global 2,000 companies.

<p>
	In February, Microsoft fixed another known issue linked to the KB5051987 security update that <a href="https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-fixes-outlook-drag-and-drop-broken-by-windows-updates/" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">broke Outlook email and calendar drag-and-drop</a> on Windows 24H2 systems.

					<strong>Symptoms</strong>
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Devices that have certain Citrix components installed might be unable to complete installation of the January 2025 Windows security update. This issue was observed on devices with <a class="ocpExternalLink" href="https://docs.citrix.com/en-us/session-recording/current-release/install-upgrade-uninstall.html" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Citrix Session Recording Agent (SRA)</a> version 2411. The 2411 version of this application was released in December 2024.<br>
					<br>
					Affected devices might initially download and apply the January 2025 Windows security update correctly, such as via the Windows Update page in Settings. However, when restarting the device to complete the update installation, an error message with text similar to “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes” appears. The device will then revert to the Windows updates previously present on the device.<br>
					<br>
					This issue likely affects a limited number of organizations as version 2411 of the SRA application is a new version. Home users are not expected to be affected by this issue.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					<strong>Workaround</strong>
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Citrix has documented this issue, including a workaround, which can be performed prior to installing the January 2025 Windows security update. For details, see <a class="ocpExternalLink" href="https://support.citrix.com/s/article/CTX692505-microsofts-january-security-update-failsreverts-on-a-machine-with-2411-session-recording-agent" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Citrix’s documentation</a>.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					Microsoft is working with Citrix to address this issue and will update this documentation once a resolution is available.

	Nvidia G-Assist has limited functionality right now, but it runs locally.
</h3>

<p>
	Nvidia has seen its fortunes soar in recent years as its <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/03/nvidia-unveils-blackwell-b200-the-worlds-most-powerful-chip-designed-for-ai/" rel="external nofollow">AI-accelerating GPUs</a> have become worth their weight in gold. Most people use their Nvidia GPUs for games, but why not both? Nvidia has a new AI you can run at the same time, having just<a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/g-assist-ai-companion-for-rtx-ai-pcs/" rel="external nofollow"> released</a> its experimental G-Assist AI. It runs locally on your GPU to help you optimize your PC and get the most out of your games. It can do some neat things, but Nvidia isn't kidding when it says this tool is experimental.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	G-Assist is available in the Nvidia desktop app, and it consists of a floating overlay window. After invoking the overlay, you can either type or speak to G-Assist to check system stats or make tweaks to your settings. You can ask basic questions like, "How does DLSS Frame Generation work?" but it also has control over some system-level settings.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By calling up G-Assist, you can get a rundown of how your system is running, including custom data charts created on the fly by G-Assist. You can also ask the AI to tweak your machine, for example, optimizing the settings for a particular game or toggling on or off a setting. G-Assist can even overclock your GPU if you so choose, complete with a graph of expected performance gains.
</p>

<p>

		<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="113" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/iJ_BXVLan50?feature=oembed" title="Project G-Assist | AI Assistant For Your GeForce RTX PC - Available Now" width="200"></iframe>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	<em>Nvidia on G-Assist. </em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Nvidia demoed G-Assist last year with some impressive features tied to the active game. That version of G-Assist could see what you were doing and offer suggestions about how to reach your next objective. The game integration is sadly quite limited in the public version, supporting just a few games, like <em>Ark: Survival Evolved</em>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There is, however, support for a number of third-party plug-ins that give G-Assist control over Logitech G, Corsair, MSI, and Nanoleaf peripherals. So, for instance, G-Assist could talk to your MSI motherboard to control your thermal profile or ping Logitech G to change your LED settings.
</p>

<h2>
	The promise of on-device AI
</h2>

<p>
	As PC manufacturers fall all over themselves to release <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-copilot-ai-pc-requirements-are-embarrassing-for-intel-and-amd/" rel="external nofollow">AI laptops</a>, Nvidia has occasionally reminded everyone that computers with real GPUs are the ultimate AI PCs. There just hasn't been a lot of opportunity to take advantage of that, leaving most AI tools running in the cloud. Nvidia previously released the general purpose <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/02/nvidias-chat-with-rtx-is-a-chatgpt-style-app-that-runs-on-your-own-gpu/" rel="external nofollow">ChatRTX app</a>, but G-Assist is focused on gamers, who are more likely to have powerful GPUs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Nvidia says G-Assist relies on a small language model (SLM) that has been optimized for local operation. The default text installation requires 3GB of space, and adding voice control boosts that to 6.5GB. You also need to have a GeForce RTX 30, 40, and 50 series GPU with at least 12GB of RAM. The more powerful the GPU, the faster G-Assist runs. Support for laptop GPUs will come later, but few of them will be fast enough for G-Assist.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">
	<div>
		<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="113" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/LGegocY3bro?feature=oembed" title="Project G-Assist | AI Assistant For Your RTX PC - Analyzing Performance" width="200"></iframe>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	<em>G-Assist system info. </em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	G-Assist runs on your GPU instead of the cloud, but you're probably also using that GPU to run your game. We tested this with an RTX 4070, and interacting with the model caused GPU usage to spike noticeably. Running inference on the GPU to generate an output from the model is slow, and it can cause game performance to tank. Baldur's Gate 3 at max settings wasn't unplayable, but FPS did drop by about 20% during G-Assist processing. If your GPU is struggling to maintain frame rates, G-Assist is going to make that harder. Outside of games, G-Assist is much faster, but you'll want a <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/01/review-nvidias-geforce-rtx-5090-is-the-first-gpu-that-can-beat-the-rtx-4090/" rel="external nofollow">very powerful GPU</a> if you intend to use this regularly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	G-Assist is slow and buggy enough that you probably won't want to rely on it right now. It's still faster to tweak most of the system and game settings yourself. However, it is an interesting step toward running AI models on your hardware. Future GPUs might be fast enough to run games and language models simultaneously, but for now, it's just a fun experiment.

	Mozilla has a fresh browser update for those who use TikTok in Firefox. Version 163.0.3 is now available with a single fix for performance issues on the video platform.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The changelog for version 163.0.3 is a rather slim one:
</p>

<p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	According to users who reported the problem, pre-Firefox 163.0.3 versions of the browser experience "extreme slowdowns," user interface lags, and video stuttering after scrolling a bunch of videos and attempting to open a profile page, resulting in the browser feeling "completely overwhelmed by TikTok's website." Chromium-based browsers, though, do not experience those symptoms. In addition to <a href="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1954323" rel="external nofollow">reports on Bugzilla</a>, there are <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1j7as48/tiktoks_site_is_insanely_slow_demanding_on/" rel="external nofollow">plenty of complaints on Reddit</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Firefox 163.0.3 follows the two previously released Firefox updates for version 163.0. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-13601-is-out-with-fixes-for-login-and-keyboard-shortcut-bugs/" rel="external nofollow">Firefox 163.0.1 fixed problems</a> with cookie size limits, which was causing issues with login retention and other state-related bugs. It also fixed the non-working Ctrl / Cmd + L shortcut. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/mozilla-outs-firefox-13602-to-fix-cookie-deleting-issue-high-cpu-usage-on-windows-more/" rel="external nofollow">As for Firefox 163.0.2</a>, it delivered more patches for cookies, fixes for user interface glitches, high CPU usage on Windows (when locked or with the laptop lid closed), and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can find release notes for the latest Firefox update <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/136.0.3/releasenotes/" rel="external nofollow">in the official documentation</a>. The browser is <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/136.0.3/releasenotes/" rel="external nofollow">available from the official website</a> and the <a href="https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NZVDKPMR9RD" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Store</a> (for Windows 10 and 11 users).

	Microsoft is working on a new program called Command Palette for its open source PowerToys collection that will replace the Run module in the near future.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	PowerToys Run is a quick launcher for Windows that is invoked with the shortcut Alt-Space. You may use it to run programs quickly and for other tasks, including web searches, Shell commands, or finding files.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Command Palette will expand the functionality. In fact, plans are to "eventually graduate [the module] out of PowerToys" to turn it into a standalone application.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="command-palette.png" class="ipsImage" decoding="async" height="720" width="720" src="https://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/command-palette.png">
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It should then work like other dedicated launchers for Windows, including <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2020/08/05/launchyqt-is-a-fork-of-the-keystroke-launcher-program-launchy/" rel="external nofollow">Launchy</a>, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2021/05/17/pinpoint-is-an-open-source-keystroke-launcher-with-many-plugins/" rel="external nofollow">PinPoint</a>, or <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2020/10/27/search-for-files-folders-run-programs-commands-web-searches-from-your-desktop-with-flow-launcher/" rel="external nofollow">Flow Launcher</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As far as differences to PowerToys Run are concerned, there are some. Not all modules that Run uses have been ported at this stage. Most, including the option to run installed apps, search for files, or run web searches, are already integrated.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The biggest change is the introduction of new extensions that expand the functionality. One of the major additions is support for winget, the Windows package manager. This allows you to install, uninstall, or update extensions directly from the Command Palette interface.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Winget commands can be very useful. There is a command to <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2023/12/25/this-winget-command-tells-you-which-programs-have-updates/" rel="external nofollow">upgrade all installed programs</a> or to <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://www.ghacks.net/2021/10/15/how-to-use-winget-to-install-microsoft-store-applications/" rel="external nofollow">install Microsoft Store apps without using the Store</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another new feature of the redesigned launcher is the option to save bookmarks. The developer notes say that you may use them to save shortcuts to files, folders, and webpages as top-level commands. Whether that includes bookmarking commands remains to be seen, as this is not mentioned specifically.
</p>

<h2>
	Closing Words
</h2>

<p>
	The new application is not yet available. It remains to be seen how snappy it is going to be in comparison to existing launchers, especially once it is available as a standalone application and not as an integrated module of the PowerToys collection of Windows tools.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The development progress is highlighted on GitHub. Just follow this link and you see the exact state of the new run module and launcher for PowerToys.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>Now You: do you use a launcher application on your systems? If so, which and why?</em>
</p>

	Nvidia's Project G-Assist is now available for download as part of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-app-gets-display-scaling-color-settings-dlss-input-resolution-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">the latest Nvidia App update</a>. G-Assist is a small language model (SLM) that runs locally on your device and lets you execute various actions on your PC with your voice or text messages.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">

	</div>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Nvidia says G-Assist can offer you real-time diagnostics and recommendations to work around various bottlenecks, improve power efficiency, optimize game settings, do some light overclocking, and more. For example, you can ask G-Assist to help improve performance, and it will offer some useful information and take action on your behalf.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, G-Assist is capable of generating performance metrics, giving you a comprehensive overview of FPS, latency, hardware utilization, temperatures, and more. It can also answer questions on how various hardware components work, what your PC specs are, and even tap into third-party peripherals and applications. For example, enable benchmarks, adjust fan speeds, change lighting, and more. Supported products include MSI motherboards, Logitech G-Series devices, Corsair RGB devices, Nanoleaf panels, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	G-Assist has a pretty extensive list of supported features; you can check them out here.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While all of that sounds great, G-Assist is not for everyone. Not all RTX users can run this SLM on their systems. Nvidia's official specs mandate an RTX 30 or newer GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM, about 10GB of storage space, and a relatively modern processor.
</p>

<p>
	Nvidia notes that G-Assist only works in English, and it is not a broad conversational AI like other AI chatbots. Also, you might see a small performance dip when running G-Assist side-by-side with your games. MS-DEFCON 4: Mixed bag for March
</h3>

<p>
	By Susan Bradley
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Although CISA has given businesses who follow its guidance until early April to install updates released in March, I’m urging you to do so now.</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Accordingly, I’m lowering the MS-DEFCON level to 4. You can find CISA’s deadlines in its <a href="https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog" rel="external nofollow">Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Note that my recommendations for businesses include some possible exceptions.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you are running Windows 10, take a moment to learn the exact version installed (<strong>Start | Settings | System | About</strong>). If it doesn’t say 22H2, take action. The first step is to check whether you have used some method to block version updates, such as Registry settings or the use of <a href="https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm/" rel="external nofollow">InControl</a>. Remove such blocks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Then use Windows Update in Settings to check for updates and see whether 22H2 is offered. If not, go to the <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10?msockid=258bd5873ef369c921bdc52b3af36ba2" rel="external nofollow">Windows download page</a>. Beneath the <strong>Windows 10 2022 Update | Version 22H2</strong> heading, click on <strong>Update now</strong>. This will download the installation file, which you can then run. You will also see the option to download an ISO, but don’t do that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This will easily bring you up to 22H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Why am I recommending that? Microsoft ended 21H2 servicing in June 2023. Also, Microsoft’s planned Extended Support Update applies only to 22H2.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<div>
	<strong>Consumers</strong>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 10 users should expect a significant rise in the number of emails and notifications received from Microsoft about the end of support for Windows 10. The company is becoming quite pushy. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at this point. I have a PC on an insider build of Windows 10 (19045.5674) with persistent messages about updating or upgrading your PC. I hope that this annoying push does not survive the insider’s build and thus does not show up in the stable builds delivered to consumers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are a few examples of new behaviors in Windows Settings as Windows 10 nears its end of life.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Full screen upgrade warning" data-ratio="52.58" decoding="async" src="https://www.askwoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/NL-2025-03-25-bradley-fig-01.jpg"><br>
	<em>Figure 1. After an update, Windows 10 displays a full-screen warning (aka scare tactic) encouraging you to purchase a new Windows 11 PC.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This full-screen display seemingly comes out of nowhere. If you have taken your eye off the screen and look back to find this, it can be a bit disorienting. The <strong>Remind me later</strong> and <strong>Learn more</strong> options seem like the only available next steps, but the <strong>Escape</strong> key will close this display.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Upgrade check returns" data-ratio="71.06" decoding="async" src="https://www.askwoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/NL-2025-03-25-bradley-fig-02.jpg"><br>
	<em>Figure 2. The “Get ready” message in Windows Update has become more prominent.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There have been upgrade messages in Settings for some time, but they had moved further down the screen and were smaller. They have returned with a vengeance to the top of the Windows Update panel.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="A FAQ in Windows Update" data-ratio="71.06" decoding="async" src="https://www.askwoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/NL-2025-03-25-bradley-fig-03.jpg"><br>
	<em>Figure 3. The Device Specifications section of the About screen in Settings now includes an FAQ.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	More pushiness! While these questions seem reasonable on the surface, the answers are clearly marketing — just more encouragement about getting new hardware.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<img alt="Version confusion" data-ratio="71.06" decoding="async" src="https://www.askwoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/NL-2025-03-25-bradley-fig-04.jpg"><br>
	<em>Figure 4. Incredible sloppiness</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After running updates that installed build 19045.5608, the About Windows dialog (run the command winver from a command line) correctly shows 22H2. However, Settings | About shows 2009. This is very shoddy work, very disappointing.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You may see preview updates released for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 this week. I do not recommend installing preview updates. I review them to see the highlights of things to come in April. However, install the March updates now.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you are experiencing Edge or Chrome freezing or even fluttering on your display on a Windows 11 PC, consider turning off multi-plane overlay. NVIDIA has a <a href="https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5157/~/after-updating-to-nvidia-game-ready-driver-461.09-or-newer,-some-desktop-apps" rel="external nofollow">registry key</a> you can download and run if you are impacted.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If your device has updated the Microsoft Snipping Tool app from the Microsoft store to version 11.2501.7.0 (released in February 2025), you might observe that the tool stops responding with an exception while trying to capture screenshots. Microsoft is working on fixing the issue. This impacts Windows 10 and Windows 11.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<div>
	<strong>Businesses</strong>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Windows 11 24H2 still feels very much like a work in progress. Soon after the March updates were released, several folks reported that they were having issues with the Remote Desktop Protocol. Soon after joining a remote session to a desktop, the session would crash. I tested a Win11 24H2 PC remotely accessing a Win11 23H2 PC and it worked without error. I’m not sure whether something else is going on.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For example, I found that once the March updates were installed on my Windows 10 22H2 PC, my RDP connection would stall, freeze up, and not allow me to connect if the machine had been sitting for a day. Rebooting the PC cleared the problem and the connection could be made. Upon examination, I found an older application that provided USB over an RDP connection. I could see evidence in the event logs that this app was not happy. I uninstalled the app, and RDP was back to normal.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The message in the event log was:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	Activation context generation failed for “C:\Program Files\USB over Network\usbserver.exe”. Error in manifest or policy file “” on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are: Component 1: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.19041.4355_none_a865f0c28672571c.manifest. Component 2: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\manifests\amd64_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.19041.4355_none_60b8b9eb71f62e16.manifest.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This pointed me in the direction of an old installation of Fabulatech’s USB over Network. Event logs can be confusing and messy, but there are times it really does work to point you in the right direction.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you are impacted by this Windows 11 24H2 bug, the following steps will fix it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div style="line-height: 1.3;">
	<ul style="margin: 0 0 10px 30px; padding: 0; list-style-type: square;">
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			Navigate to the following location in Registry Editor:
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0; list-style: none; font-family: Consolas, Courier, monospace;">
			HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			If the key doesn’t exist, create it.
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			Create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value:
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			Right-click on the Client folder and select <strong>New | DWORD (32-bit) Value,</strong> then name it <strong style="font-family: Consolas, Courier, monospace;">ClientDisableUDP.</strong>
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			Double-click the newly created <strong style="font-family: Consolas, Courier, monospace;">ClientDisableUDP.</strong> and set the <strong>Value</strong> to <strong>1.</strong>
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			Click OK and close the Registry Editor.
		</li>
		<li style="margin: 5px 0 5px 0; padding: 0;">
			Restart your PC.
		</li>
	</ul>
</div>

<p>
	You can also use Group Policy by navigating to <strong>Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Remote Desktop Services | Remote Desktop Connection Client, clicking Turn Off UDP On Client</strong>, selecting <strong>Enable</strong>, and then clicking <strong>OK</strong>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Recently, Microsoft performed a relocation of OneDrive data within its data centers. This resulted in shared folder shortcuts showing up as Internet shortcuts while the relocation was in progress, and it was briefly confusing to many users. As I write this, it appears that the relocation work is complete and the problem is thus resolved.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is not related to a Windows or OneDrive update, but rather isolated in Microsoft’s own backend. Let me hear from you in the <a href="https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/ms-defcon-4-mixed-bag-for-march/" rel="external nofollow">forum</a> if your were affected by this problem and whether it has cleared.

	Microsoft, today, has released the newest build to Windows 11 24H2 Beta channel Insiders. The new build, 26120.3585, under KB5053644, brings some major Search related improvements for AMD and Intel Copilot+ PCs. These new features will leverage the AI processing prowess of such devices.

<p>

<p>
	The full changelog is given below:

	<p>
		We are making finding your documents, photos, and settings across Windows 11 easier on AMD and Intel®-powered Copilot+ PCs by introducing semantic indexing along with traditional indexing. Whether it’s searching in File Explorer, in the Windows search box on your taskbar, or in Settings – just type what’s on your mind to find it on your Copilot+ PC. You no longer need to remember file names, exact words in file content, or settings names. For example, you can use your own words to find images by typing “bridge at sunset”, documents by describing what they are about like “Europe trip budget”, or settings like “change my theme”. Thanks to the power of the 40+ TOPS NPU onboard Copilot+ PCs, these search improvements work even when you’re not connected to the internet.

		These experiences are supported in select languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish) and document formats. Supported file formats include .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, .xlsx for documents and .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .ico for images. <a href="https://aka.ms/copilotpluspcs" rel="external nofollow">See here for more details</a>.

	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We are also announcing support for also finding photos saved in the cloud with improved Windows Search for AMD and Intel®-powered Copilot+ PCs. Just use your own words to find photos stored and saved in the cloud by describing what they are about like “European castles” or “summer picnics” in the search box at the top right corner of File Explorer or also in the Windows search box. In addition to photos stored locally on your Copilot+ PC, photos from the cloud will now show up in the search results together. In addition to searching for photos, exact matches for your keywords within the text of your cloud files will show in the search results.

	<p>
		You can try this experience out today with your personal OneDrive when signed in with your Microsoft account and connected to the internet. If you are signed into OneDrive with a work or school account (Entra ID), you will only see matches for keywords you are searching for within the text of your cloud files in the search results – not photos. Third-party cloud providers will be able to support this experience with their services as well with documentation coming soon.

	<p>
		We’re excited to introduce a new way to find your cloud content in Windows and will continue improving search results and capabilities over time.

	<p>
		These improved Windows Search experiences <strong>continue to gradually roll out</strong> to Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs, including finding photos saved in the cloud, so you may not see these experiences right away.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

			<strong>[REMINDER] </strong>When joining the Beta Channel on Windows 11, version 24H2 – you will be offered <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2025/02/28/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-26120-3360-dev-and-beta-channels/" rel="external nofollow">Build 26120.3360</a> After installing that update, you will be offered the most recent update available. This 2-hop experience to get onto the latest flight in the Beta Channel is just temporary.
		</li>
		<li>
			After you do a PC reset under Settings &gt; System &gt; Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26120. This will not prevent you from getting future Beta Channel updates, which will resolve this issue.

	Microsoft has released an interesting Dev Channel update today with a new build, 26200.5510, under KB5054148. The release is meant as a transitionary update as the company explains that the Dev channel is "jumping ahead" to 26200 series.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Starting today, the Dev Channel is jumping ahead to receive 26200 series builds. This means that the window to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel is closed and once Build 26200.5510 is installed. If you are in the Dev Channel today and still want to switch to the Beta Channel at the last minute, when Build 26200.5510 is offered you can pause updates in Windows Update and switch your channel to the Beta Channel and un-pause updates.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		These 26200 series builds are based on Windows 11, version 24H2 and will contain many of the same features and improvements as the 26120 series builds that will continue to be released in the Beta Channel. Over time, we will be making behind-the-scenes platform changes in these builds and these builds may have different known issues because of those changes than what we’re flighting to the Beta Channel.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In the case of Build 26200.5510 today – this build contains the same features and improvements as Build 26120.3576 released previously.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Thus the new build does not have any new changes or improvements but it does note some new known issues:

	Microsoft is rolling out a big new update for the Windows Photos app in the Windows Insider program. Insiders in all Windows 11 and 10 preview channels can try new features like searching the web with OCR, improved context menus, subfolders support, a dedicated Copilot button, JXL support, and more.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Earlier this year, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ocr-support-is-back-in-the-photos-app-for-windows-insiders/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft released Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for the Photos app</a> on Windows 10 and 11. With the latest update, you can select recognized text and click "Search in Web" to find more information about it.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Next, the app's context menu is being improved. When right-clicking an image in File Explorer, Windows 11 will present you with a new submenu that contains additional features like "Edit with Photos," "Erase Objects with Photos," "Create with Designer," and "Visual Search with Bing." This change will make it easier for users to discover additional features in the Photos app and launch them much quicker.
</p>

<p>
	The Windows Photos app now lets you hide or show subfolders and their content in the Gallery for richer and more convenient navigation. Plus, the toolbar received a dedicated Copilot button for sharing images with AI to receive photo editing tips, image insights, and framing suggestions.

</figure>

<p>
	Finally, the app received two additional changes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			Due to popular requests, the Photos app now supports JXL files.
		</li>
		<li>
			We implemented bug fixes for the Image Creator and Restyle Image features on Copilot+ PCs to improve overall quality and performance. This includes successfully loading Image Creator in the Photos app on the initial launch of Photos and being able to Save generated images under a different file name.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	All these changes and improvements are rolling out to insiders with Windows Photos version 2025.11030.20006.0 and newer. Note that the rollout is gradual, so you might not have every update right after installing the latest release.
</p>

<p>

	The latest Windows 11 preview build marks the start of a new range of builds intended to test underlying platform work for version 24H2 (and probably 25H2.)
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft has confirmed that it will begin testing new behind-the-scenes platform changes for Windows 11 with Insiders in the Dev Channel via a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2025/03/24/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-26200-5510-dev-channel/" href="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2025/03/24/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-26200-5510-dev-channel/" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">new series of builds in the 26200 range</a>. This is likely intended to lay early groundwork for version 25H2, which is expected to release later this year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to my sources, Qualcomm's upcoming <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/qualcomm-teases-its-2nd-gen-snapdragon-x-elite-performance-and-it-looks-like-were-in-for-a-treat" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/qualcomm-teases-its-2nd-gen-snapdragon-x-elite-performance-and-it-looks-like-were-in-for-a-treat" rel="external nofollow">Snapdragon X2 SoC</a> requires platform changes that were previously only available in the Windows Canary Channel. Microsoft looks to be backporting those platform changes to the Dev Channel, which should allow X2-powered devices to run Germanium-based versions of Windows 11.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Germanium" href="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Germanium" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Germanium</a> is the name of the underlying platform release that Windows 11 version 24H2 is based on. Microsoft is yet to confirm if version 25H2 will be based on the same platform release, but the backporting of platform changes from the Active Development Branch to Germanium certainly suggests it <em>could </em>be.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, there will likely be other platform changes and improvements backported to Germanium which will benefit all users. Platform improvements often introduce performance and security enhancements, in addition to quality of life updates and bug fixes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Sharing the same platform release across version 24H2 and 25H2 means Microsoft can easily service both simultaneously with bug fixes and feature updates without too much extra work or overhead. It also means the update process from 24H2 to 25H2 will be much faster, smaller, and less risky for end users.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft has been keen to reduce fragmentation between different Windows platform releases. The company currently has three different supported platform releases for client in the market: <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Vibranium" href="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Vibranium" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Vibranium</a>, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Nickel" href="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Nickel" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Nickel</a>, and Germanium. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/windows-10-version-22h2" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/windows-10-version-22h2" rel="external nofollow">V</a><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/windows-10-version-22h2" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/windows-10-version-22h2" rel="external nofollow">ibranium is what Windows 10</a> is based on, and Nickel is what <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-version-23h2-new-features-release-date-changelog-2023-update" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-version-23h2-new-features-release-date-changelog-2023-update" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11 version 23H2</a> is based on.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/psa-windows-10-has-entered-its-final-year-of-free-support" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10/psa-windows-10-has-entered-its-final-year-of-free-support" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10's support ending in October</a>, Microsoft could use this as an opportunity to get as many Windows users onto the same platform release as possible. It looks like Germanium will be that platform release, should Microsoft not ship the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Selenium" href="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Selenium" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Selenium</a> for client.

Interestingly, support for both Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows 10 version 22H2 ends later this year, so this may be the perfect time for Microsoft to push to get everyone onto the same platform release.

	Back in December last year, 2024, Microsoft announced via the Microsoft 365 admin center that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-365-enterprise-users-to-be-automatically-switched-to-new-outlook-in-april-2026/" rel="external nofollow">Enterprise users would be switched over to the New Outlook</a> for Windows from Classic Outlook in April of 2026.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At the time, the company also informed via a support article that Business plan users running the Current Channel would also be gradually made to switch over to the New Outlook. In the article, Microsoft <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/switch-to-new-outlook-for-windows-f5fb9e26-af7c-4976-9274-61c6428344e7" rel="external nofollow">stated</a>:

You can choose to switch back to classic Outlook at any time, using the toggle in new Outlook. Both users and IT Admins can also turn off the automatic switch if not ready to try the new Outlook.

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		We will start to roll out to users with a Business Plan in the Beta Channel in November 2024 for validation and feedback.

<p>
	More clarity was provided later as it <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365-apps/outlook/get-started/control-install#opt-out-of-new-outlook-migration" rel="external nofollow">wrote</a>:

Users who are switched to the new Outlook can toggle back to the classic Outlook if they choose.

<p>
	Following that, recently, Microsoft made a change to the deployment guidance for New Outlook for Windows. Neowin noticed while browsing that the tech giant has begun including the New Outlook app by default on new Microsoft 365 (M365) deployments, although it is giving admins the option to include both New and Classic Outlooks, or just one of them.

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		To help users with a gradual migration to new Outlook and avoid the disruption abrupt changes might cause later on, organizations are encouraged to run classic and new Outlook side-by-side. For this reason, both Outlooks are turned on to install by default. However, if an organization chooses to install either new Outlook or classic Outlook only, admins can change the default behavior by configuring the install setting <strong>off </strong>or <strong>on</strong>.

<p>
	If you are wondering, version 2502 of Microsoft 365 Apps was released on the current channel earlier this month on March 5, and the size of the update was around 60 MB. The latest build available for version 2502 is 18526.20168.

	Microsoft is making over 150 changes to the Microsoft Store based on user feedback.
</h3>

<p>
	Microsoft developers have been hard at work monitoring social media to receive feedback about the Microsoft Store. Rudy Huyn, principal lead architect of the Microsoft Store, took to X to share some of the changes made following feedback.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In total, Microsoft has made over 150 client-side changes, according to Huyn.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	When Microsoft announced the<a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-replaces-free-wallpaper-website-with-an-unorganized-mess-in-the-microsoft-store" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-replaces-free-wallpaper-website-with-an-unorganized-mess-in-the-microsoft-store" rel="external nofollow"> end of its free wallpapers and themes website</a>, I complained about how themes were organized in the Microsoft Store. It seems I was not alone, since Microsoft has created a brand-new page for browsing themes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Other changes include downloads now appearing separately from the My Library section of the Microsoft Store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Gamers also received some love, as it's now possible to select game components before installing a game.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Downloading specific components was a nightmare when I <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/im-a-gaming-free-agent-with-money-to-burn-help-me-pick-between-pc-xbox-and-ps5" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/im-a-gaming-free-agent-with-money-to-burn-help-me-pick-between-pc-xbox-and-ps5" rel="external nofollow">compared the Microsoft Store to Steam.</a> I'm happy to see some changes to improve the experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	New server modules, a new spotlight for home pages, and an AI Hub for Copilot+ PCs round out an impressive list of changes from Microsoft.

	The company has worked on many different menus over the decades. However, the Start menu available on <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-10" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-10" rel="external nofollow">Windows 10</a> is arguably (by far) the best approach as it combines modern ideas with a hint of classic elements and the best selection of customization options.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Thirty years is a long time for any feature to be around, so let's look at how the Start menu has evolved over the years.
</p>

<h2 id="section-windows-95-the-birth-of-the-start-menu">
	<span>Windows 95: The birth of the Start menu</span>
</h2>

<p>
	On August 24, 1995, Microsoft introduced the Start menu as a central hub for accessing programs, documents, and system settings with the launch of Windows 95.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This innovation replaced the "Program Manager," offering a more intuitive and organized user experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In contrast, the <strong>"Program Manager"</strong> was technically something we can refer to today as a folder containing a list of items with sub-containers to access the different programs with no real organization.

					An interesting fact is that the Taskbar (and Start button) also arrived alongside the Start menu with the release of Windows 95.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					The menu was simple, with a pop-up in a cascading format, providing access to programs, documents, and system settings. Also, it had a left-hand sidebar that contained the <strong>"Windows 95"</strong> text.

																					This shift aimed to create a unified experience across touch and mouse-keyboard devices but received mixed feedback.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					This is one of the biggest mistakes Microsoft made for the operating system.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					This full-screen approach was a core element of Microsoft's vision for a touch-centric operating system.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					The Start screen was dominated by "Live Tiles," which represented applications and websites. These tiles could display dynamic, real-time information like weather updates, news headlines, and social media feeds.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					Also, tiles came in various sizes, allowing users to customize the layout and prioritize information.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					In addition, the Start screen introduced the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_(design_language)" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_(design_language)" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">"Metro"</a> (later "Modern") design language, which is characterized by clean (flat interfaces), bold typography, and a focus on content rather than visual chrome.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					One of the many problems was that the Start screen was heavily optimized for touch input, with large, easily tappable tiles. This design philosophy aimed to provide a consistent and intuitive experience across touch-enabled devices.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					However, this change was a significant source of user frustration, particularly for those using desktop computers with a mouse and keyboard.
																				</p>

																				<p>

																				</p>

																				<p>
																					Since this version of the operating system didn't include a Start button either, Microsoft added the <strong>Charms</strong> bar, a sidebar that appeared with a swipe from the right side of the screen or by moving the mouse to the upper or lower right-hand corners of the screen. This bar contained common functions like search, settings, and share.

																							In a way, the Windows 8 Start screen represented a radical shift in the user interface, prioritizing touch interaction and live information. While it aimed to modernize the experience, it faced significant criticism for its departure from familiar desktop elements.

																						</p>

																						<p>
																							Then, in 2013, Windows 8.1 was launched; this time around, the company didn't bring back the Start menu. However, the Start button was reintroduced, linking users back to the Start Screen.

																											It's important to note that on Windows 10, Microsoft began to decouple search from the Start menu. The Start menu itself features a simplified layout, with pinned apps at the top and a <strong>"Recommended" </strong>section below, displaying recently opened files and applications.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			Also, Live Tiles have been replaced with more traditional static icons, and this menu emphasizes rounded corners and a cleaner, more minimalist aesthetic.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			You can also pin as many apps as you want by creating scrollable pages in the menu, and you can even organize apps in groups. However, many users who were accustomed to the Windows 10 Start menu have expressed frustration with the lack of customization.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			A common criticism is the limited customization options compared to previous versions. For example, you can't resize the menu, remove the "Recommended" section, and it's no longer possible to show Live Tiles.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			Another aspect of the Start menu is that Microsoft has been using it to push even more advertisements. Although the company has been known to promote apps from partners, you only used to notice this in new installations. However, on Windows 11, the "Recommended" section is also used to promote apps from the Microsoft Store dynamically.
																																		</p>

																																		<p>

																																		</p>

																																		<p>
																																			Also, in the user menu, the company uses this area to promote its cloud services by luring users into backing up their files to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/microsoft-onedrive" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/onedrive" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/microsoft-onedrive" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/microsoft-onedrive" rel="external nofollow">OneDrive</a> and <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/office-2019-or-office-365-which-one-you-should-get" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/office-2019-or-office-365-which-one-you-should-get" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft 365 subscriptions</a>.

	Microsoft kicks off this week with a new Windows 11 Release Preview build for insiders, especially those with Copilot+ PCs. Build 26100.3624 is now available for download and features AI-powered Windows Search and improved photo search. For now, these features are available on Snapdragon-powered devices, but Microsoft promises to release them on eligible AMD and Intel systems soon.

			<strong>New</strong>! Finding your documents, photos, and settings across Windows 11 is easier on Copilot+ PCs with improved Windows Search, powered by semantic indexing models along with traditional lexical indexing. Whether it’s searching in File Explorer, in the Windows Search on your taskbar, or in Settings – just type what’s on your mind to find it on your Copilot+ PC. You no longer need to remember file names, exact words in file content, or settings names. Searching for settings like “change my theme” will work within the Settings app for now. Thanks to the power of the 40+ TOPS NPU onboard Copilot+ PCs, these search improvements work even when you’re not connected to the internet. For more info, see semantic search on Copilot+ PCs. Available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs coming soon.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>New</strong>! Locating your photos stored and saved in the cloud is getting simpler on Copilot+ PCs You can use your own words in the search box at the top right corner of File Explorer like “summer picnics”. In addition to photos stored locally on your Copilot+ PC, photos from the cloud will now show up in the search results together. Exact matches for your keywords within the text of your cloud files will also show in the search results. You can try this experience out today with your personal OneDrive when signed in with your Microsoft account and connected to the internet. To learn more, see semantic search on Copilot+ PCs. Available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs coming soon.

	It looks like the Win + C shortcut is returning to Windows 11. This keyboard combo has quite a rich history of performing different tasks across various Windows releases, and as of right now, it does not do anything. However, Microsoft allegedly wants to change that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	During the Windows 10 era, the Win + C shortcut was responsible for invoking Cortana (in Windows 8, it triggers Charms Bar). In 2023, Microsoft turned off the shortcut with Cortana's death. Its next assignment was invoking Copilot in its sidebar form, but in 2024, Microsoft ditched the shortcut once again as it moved away to a more app-like Copilot experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, with Windows 11 having <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-finally-releases-native-copilot-app-for-windows-11-with-new-useful-features/" rel="external nofollow">a proper Copilot app</a> and not just a web wrapper, Microsoft appears to be changing its mind again. In the latest Windows 11 builds, @<a href="https://x.com/phantomofearth/status/1903843219638555054" rel="external nofollow">phantomofearth</a> discovered the following string pointing at the potential return of the Win + C shortcut:
</p>

<p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedOther" contenteditable="false">
	<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="ipsEmbed_finishedLoading" data-controller="core.front.core.autosizeiframe" data-embedid="embed5632568598" src="https://nsaneforums.com/index.php?app=core&amp;module=system&amp;controller=embed&amp;url=https://twitter.com/phantomofearth/status/1903843219638555054?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1903843219638555054%257Ctwgr%255Eeecf94202ca88b144ca74129c3899b922903bdc8%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url=https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-still-cannot-make-up-its-mind-on-what-to-do-with-this-windows-11-keyboard-shortcut/" style="overflow: hidden; height: 375px;"></iframe>
</div>

<p>
	In its current form, Windows 11 lets you trigger Copilot by pressing Alt + Space or holding Alt + Space (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-copilot-app-gets-a-more-convenient-way-to-talk-to-copilot/" rel="external nofollow">the recently added shortcut for starting voice conversations with Copilot</a>). For now, there is no information on whether Microsoft plans to change the default Alt + Space shortcut to Win + C. Considering that ChatGPT and similar applications use the same shortcut, Microsoft might want to have a separate shortcut for its own assistant. After all, Microsoft lets you remap the Copilot key to launch other applications, and it probably wants to give this feature to all Windows 11 users via the Win + C shortcut.
</p>

	Windows 10 will reach its end of mainstream support in less than six months, completing its decade-old journey and leaving space for Windows 11 with its AI shenanigans, fancy user interfaces, and other improvements. The end of Windows 10 support is quite an event in Microsoft's world, and as usual, it will affect more products, not just the operating system itself.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In <a href="https://mc.merill.net/message/MC1035701" rel="external nofollow">a new Microsoft 365 Message Center post</a>, the company announced that OneNote for Windows 10 is going down as well. On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end OneNote support, and the app will no longer receive new features and security updates. As such, users are strongly recommended to migrate to OneNote for Windows desktop app (part of Microsoft 365).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		As we continue to enhance OneNote with a unified and modern experience, we want to remind you that OneNote for Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. To avoid disruptions, we strongly urge your organization to fully transition to OneNote on Windows (OneNote M365) and uninstall the legacy application as soon as possible. Migrating ensures continued access to the latest features, security updates, and a modernized experience.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	While OneNote for Windows 10 still has roughly half a year, Microsoft will start nagging users with update prompts much earlier. For starters, in June 2025, Microsoft will slow down the app's sync performance, thus forcing customers to ditch the old app, especially those using OneNote on multiple devices or for real-time collaboration.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Next, in July 2025, banners will make their way to OneNote for Windows 10 to make sure users are aware of the upcoming end of support. Microsoft says these banners "could impact users workflows." <em>You do not say, Microsoft.</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	OneNote on Windows offers several benefits over its outgoing sibling, such as Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labeling, new features and Copilot integration, security updates, bug fixes, and continuous support. To help users and IT admins migrate from the old OneNote for Windows 10 to OneNote on Windows, Microsoft recently published migration guidance, which you can check out <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365-apps/deploy/onenote-for-windows-10-migration-guide" rel="external nofollow">here</a>.

	As for security patches, the latest update packs important Chromium fixes. The patched vulnerabilities have been reported to be exploited in the wild (one is flagged as critical), so users are urged to update their browsers as soon as possible:

	In 2024, two new Microsoft apps for Windows 11 leaked—<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-may-be-reviving-the-people-app-in-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">People</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-working-on-the-file-search-companion-app-for-windows-taskbar/" rel="external nofollow">File Search</a>. Today, these apps finally became official—Microsoft announced them in one of its official blogs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first app is People. It is a companion app that can help you learn about contacts within your organization and get all the relevant information about each person. You can access profile cards and organizational charts, send quick Teams messages without switching apps, and search people using job titles, departments, locations, and projects. The app has a compact layout that you can quickly bring to the screen by clicking its icon on the taskbar.

</figure>

<p>
	The next is File Search, another Microsoft 365 companion app that lets you find recently opened files, look up files by their contents, filter files by their types, and more. It also supports file previews, so that you can be sure you are sharing the right file.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

You’ll recognize familiar flows in these apps, but in a lightning fast and streamlined format. Plus, you can pin both apps to your taskbar so you always know where to access them, no matter how busy your workspace gets.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The People and File Search apps are now available to Windows 11 users. However, they are not available to all users. They require Microsoft 365 desktop apps, participation in the Microsoft 365 Insider program (Beta Channel), and a Microsoft 365 subscription for business (Enterprise or Business Edition).
