	This week, Microsoft dropped plenty of Windows 11 preview builds and non-security updates. Some of them were quite big, like <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5055627-is-a-massive-update-with-a-lot-of-new-features/" rel="external nofollow">the one for Windows 11 version 24H2</a>, which introduced several <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11s-flagship-ai-feature-is-now-publicly-available/" rel="external nofollow">new AI-powered features</a>. Other updates were <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5055636-is-the-final-beta-update-for-version-23h2/" rel="external nofollow">smaller in size</a> but still packed with interesting, some hidden, features.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5055632-now-lets-you-type-bad-words-without-any-filters/" rel="external nofollow">The latest Dev</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5055634-makes-it-easier-to-use-ai-and-accessibility-features/" rel="external nofollow">Beta builds</a> continue Microsoft's rather slow process of migrating stuff from the old Control Panel to the Settings app. Recently, developers <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-bringing-more-mouse-features-from-control-panel-to-settings-in-windows-11/" rel="external nofollow">moved popular mouse settings</a>, and now, it is time for keyboard settings to have a modern overhaul.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	@<a href="https://x.com/phantomofearth" rel="external nofollow">Phantomofearh</a> on X discovered that recent Windows 11 preview builds let you customize keyboard accessibility options within the settings app. Features in question are character repeat delay (how long one should hold a key to begin repeated input) and character repeat rate (how fast it goes). You can customize these options with sliders and then try them in a special input box.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedOther" contenteditable="false">
	<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="ipsEmbed_finishedLoading" data-controller="core.front.core.autosizeiframe" data-embedid="embed5064114725" src="https://nsaneforums.com/index.php?app=core&amp;module=system&amp;controller=embed&amp;url=https://twitter.com/phantomofearth/status/1915883682457436495?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1915883682457436495%257Ctwgr%255Eb7f4d87c72b51f91ae7c04e78b013b40a3d20026%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url=https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-moves-more-control-panel-elements-to-the-settings-app-in-windows-11/" style="overflow: hidden; height: 697px;"></iframe>
</div>

<p>
	For now, it seems that the Cursor blink rate (how fast the text cursor blinks) is not available in the Settings app, which might be why Microsoft has not announced and shipped these changes yet.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new sliders are currently hidden by default. Once enabled, you can find them in Settings &gt; Accessibility &gt; Keyboard &gt; Keyboard character repeat delay and repeat rate. For reference, in the stable Windows 11 versions (and older releases), these settings are located in Control Panel &gt; Keyboard &gt; Speed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<em>What are the other Control Panel features you would like to see moving to the Settings app?</em>

	Alongside the new <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-kb5059093-oobe-initial-setup-update-for-windows-11-24h2-server-2025/" rel="external nofollow">OOBE update under KB5059093</a>, Microsoft has also released new Dynamic updates for all supported Windows 11 versions this week, namely 24H2, 23H2, and 22H2. The updates apply to Windows Server 2025 as well.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, also called Safe OS updates, as well as to the Setup binaries in the form of Setup updates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	First up, we have the dynamic updates for Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025:

	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		<strong>[WinRE start]</strong> Fixed: This update resolves an issue affecting a small number of Copilot+ PCs with ARM64 architecture and the Secure Launch feature enabled. These devices may experience difficulties executing a Push-Button Reset (PBR) or In-Place Upgrades after installing the April 2025 security update (<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-kb5055523-kb5055528-april-2025-patch-tuesday-out/" rel="external nofollow">KB5055523</a>). When these devices attempt to start the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), they encounter an error that prevents the process from proceeding.

<p>
	Up next, we have the dynamic updates for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2:

<p>
	For those who may not be aware, these Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. In a Tech Community <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/updating-windows-10-media-with-dynamic-update-packages/ba-p/982477" rel="external nofollow">blog post</a> about Windows 10 Dynamic Updates, Microsoft explained Dynamic Updates in more detail regarding its various components and uses. These packages include fixes to Setup.exe binaries, SafeOS updates for Windows Recovery Environment, and more:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		As soon as a Windows 10 feature update initiates, whether from media or a Windows Update service-connected environment, Dynamic Update is one of the first steps invoked. Windows 10 Setup reaches out to an Internet-facing URL hosted by Microsoft to fetch Dynamic Update content, then applies those updates to your OS installation media.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		Content acquired includes:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			<strong>Setup Updates</strong>: Fixes to Setup binaries or any files that Setup uses for feature updates.
		</li>
		<li>
			<strong>Safe OS Updates</strong>: Fixes for the "safe OS" that are used to update Windows recovery environment (WinRE).
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		In addition to these updates, Dynamic Update will preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. These are not updates to LPs and FODs, but reacquisition to ensure the user has these elements present with the update completes.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Setup update is available for manual downloading only from the Windows Update Catalog website. You can find it here: <a href="http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5055643" rel="external nofollow">KB5055643</a>. The update is available under KB5059093 and as is usually the case with such updates, the company has published a general changelog for it without going into any specific details about what it brings.

<p>
	These OOBE updates will install automatically during setup if the user has an active internet connection.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a separate document about OOBE, Microsoft explained what these OOBE updates deliver. It also notes that the downloading and installation time of the update depends on the users' hardware and internet connectivity. It <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/customize/desktop/windows-updates-during-oobe-in-windows-11" rel="external nofollow">writes</a>:
</p>

<p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Critical driver updates, and critical Windows zero-day patch (ZDP) updates, will begin downloading automatically during OOBE after the user has connected to a network. </p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		If a newer version of Windows is available than the version that shipped with the device, depending on OS Build, a user may receive latest Windows Updates as one of the last sections of the OOBE. The Windows update will be downloaded and installed during the OOBE.

	Chrome could, someday, be for sale, and a few companies have already expressed interest.
</h3>

<p>
	Chrome could eventually be up for sale, if the US Department of Justice gets its way in the remedies trial for <a href="/23869483/us-v-google-search-antitrust-case-updates" rel=""><em>US v. Google</em></a>. And there are already buyers lining up at Google’s door.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Any potential sale might not happen for a <em>very</em> long time. The remedies trial is still ongoing, a decision in that trial isn’t expected for quite awhile, and Google has already said it will appeal, which will definitely add more time to the process and could ultimately reverse a ruling where Google might have been forced to sell the browser.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But let’s say that Google does have to sell Chrome — who wants it? And why? We’re getting some of those answers from the remedies trial.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Let’s start with the why: a browser is a great way to promote your own search engine. Especially a browser that’s as widely used as Chrome. Google makes Chrome, so it obviously makes sense that Google also provides Google Search as its default way to search the web. Chrome is also the most widely used browser by a wide margin — it has an estimated <a href="https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share" rel="external nofollow">two-thirds of browser market share</a> — so that means that many, many, many more people are using Google Search instead of other search engines just because it’s the default there.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But the interest isn’t just to push search — having a browser as big as Chrome gives companies a surface to push just about anything. Owning Chrome would let a company suddenly put products in front of <a href="/google/652554/the-department-of-justice-really-really-wants-google-to-sell-chrome" rel="">four billion people</a>. If you’re an upstart trying to get traction, that’s unbeatable, especially if you’re an upstart like an AI company that’s trying to replace the default — which, right now, is Google.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here are the eager potential buyers — at least, that we know about:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul class="duet--article--unordered-list _1ymtmqpi _11h7yix0 _1xwtict1">
	<li class="_11h7yix1">
		<span class="duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup"><strong>OpenAI</strong>: ChatGPT’s head of product Nick Turley testified that OpenAI would be interested in buying the browser. OpenAI already has web search features baked into ChatGPT, so it makes sense that the company would be interested in owning a widely used browser to potentially bring ChatGPT to <a href="/google/654641/google-reveals-gemini-ai-has-350-million-monthly-active-users" rel="">even more users</a>. Also, OpenAI, one of Google’s biggest rivals, would probably be very happy to own one of Google’s prized assets.</span>
	</li>
	<li class="_11h7yix1">
		<span class="duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup"><strong>Perplexity</strong>: Perplexity also offers AI-powered search. The company’s chief business officer testified Perplexity would be <a href="/policy/654835/perplexity-google-antitrust-trial-remedies-chrome" rel="">interested in buying Chrome</a>. It likely wants Chrome for the same reasons that OpenAI does: as a platform that gets more people to use its services. It’s also already <a href="https://x.com/perplexity_ai/status/1894068197936304296" rel="external nofollow">making its own browser</a>, which Perplexity’s CEO says will help it build <a href="/command-line-newsletter/656599/perplexitys-ceo-on-fighting-google-and-the-coming-ai-browser-war" rel="">better agents</a> and help it get data outside its app to “better understand” its users (and potentially show them <a href="https://www.engadget.com/ai/perplexity-is-building-a-browser-in-part-to-collect-customer-data-for-targeted-ads-230132091.html" rel="external nofollow">personalized ads</a>).</span>
	</li>
	<li class="_11h7yix1">
		<span class="duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup"><strong>Yahoo</strong>: The company testified <a href="/policy/655975/yahoo-search-web-browser-prototype-google-trial-antitrust-chrome" rel="">at trial</a> that it’s prototyping its own web browser, but just buying Chrome would be a much easier way to potentially get Yahoo in front of a lot more people. At the trial, Yahoo Search General Manager Brian Provost said that actually buying Chrome would potentially cost tens of billions of dollars, but it’s something that the company could make happen with the help of Apollo Global Management, its owner.</span>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Yahoo isn’t the only company estimating a price in the eleven-digit range; Gabriel Weinberg, DuckDuckGo’s CEO, testified that Chrome could be worth, in a “back-of-the-envelope” estimate, up to $50 billion <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-23/google-chrome-worth-upwards-of-50-billion-browser-rival-says" rel="external nofollow">according to <em>Bloomberg</em></a>. So should a company get the opportunity to buy Chrome, it seems likely they’re going to have to front a <em>lot</em> of money.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But that enormous investment could be worth it. Whoever buys Chrome would instantly own a platform with billions of users. And right now, at a moment when <a href="/policy/652170/google-search-ad-tech-remedies-antitrust-chrome-breakup" rel="">Google is looking vulnerable</a>, losing its browser to a competitor would probably be a significant blow.

	Microsoft is finally ready to ship its flagship AI feature for Windows 11, plus a few more on top of it. Recall, Click to Do, and AI-powered Windows Search are now rolling out to users with supported Copilot+ PCs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft planned to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11s-ai-explorer-debuts-as-recall-a-feature-that-remembers-everything-you-do/" rel="external nofollow">launch Recall in mid-2024</a>, but the company was quickly forced to halt the rollout due to a number of privacy concerns. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-delays-the-launch-of-recall-for-copilot-pcs-theres-no-word-on-a-new-date/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft took the feature down</a>, and after a few months of radio silence, started testing Recall in the insider program. Since then, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-reveals-security-improvements-for-recall-including-the-ability-to-uninstall-it/" rel="external nofollow">Recall has received</a> multiple <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-gives-in-makes-recall-an-opt-in-feature-and-introduces-new-privacy-measures/" rel="external nofollow">security and feature improvements</a> for a better user experience.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For those unfamiliar with the feature, Recall works like a time machine for everything you do on your PC. It works by taking snapshots of your apps, websites, and other content so that you can retrace your steps and find anything you need using your own words. Microsoft says that with Recall, it takes "up to 70% less time to reengage with your PowerPoint presentation." For example, instead of remembering the exact file name, you can just ask Recall to find that PowerPoint presentation about elephants, and it will get you right to it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Windows 11 Recall" class="ipsImage" height="450" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2024/11/1732294630_image_2_-__under_embargo_until_11.22_at_10am_pt.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	Microsoft understands that not everyone wants to allow Windows 11 to capture everything that is happening on the screen. For this reason, the company made Recall a strict opt-in experience that is turned off by default. It also uses clear language when asking if the user wants to enable Recall during the initial setup. More importantly, all the data that Recall captures is stored locally. It is also fully encrypted, isolated, and protected with Windows Hello.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition to Recall, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-is-getting-new-ai-powered-search-generative-fill-and-other-ai-features/" rel="external nofollow">Copilot+ PC users are getting Click to Do</a>. This feature offers contextual shortcuts to relevant actions like page summarization, text rewriting, copying images or text, and more. You can invoke Click to Do by pressing the Win key and making a click, swiping from the right on a touchscreen-enabled computer, or using a dedicated button in various apps like Snipping Tool.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	Finally, Copilot+ PCs now have improved Windows Search, which allows you to find files by simply describing what you are looking for. It can understand the contextual meaning of your request to bring you images, documents, or settings in Windows Search, File Explorer search, and the Settings app.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	The new AI-powered experiences for Copilot+ PCs are rolling out as part of the April 2025 non-security preview update. It is an optional release, so if you want to get it, go to Settings &gt; Windows Update, toggle the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option, and then check for available updates.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Note that while Click to Do image actions are available to all Copilot+ PCs, text actions are rolling out only to Snapdragon-powered devices. Also, Recall and Click to Do are not currently available to users in the European Economic Area. Microsoft says it is working on releasing those features in Europe later this year.

	The improved Recall still tries to record everything you do on your PC.
</h3>

<p>
	Nearly a year after <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-new-recall-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/" rel="external nofollow">announcing the feature</a>, Microsoft is finally ready to roll the controversial Windows Recall feature out to the general public, the company announced today on <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/?p=179689" rel="external nofollow">its Windows Experience Blog</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Only available on Copilot+ PCs, a subset of Windows 11 systems sold within the last year or so, Recall takes continuous screenshots of everything you do on your PC, saving them, scraping text from them, and saving it all in a searchable database. This obviously has major security and privacy implications—anyone who can get access to your Recall database can see nearly everything you've done on your PC—which is why Microsoft's initial rollout attempt was such a mess.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Recall's long road to release involved a rushed initial almost-launch, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/06/windows-recall-demands-an-extraordinary-level-of-trust-that-microsoft-hasnt-earned/" rel="external nofollow">harsh criticism</a> of its (then mostly nonexistent) security protections, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/06/microsoft-delays-data-scraping-recall-feature-again-commits-to-public-beta-test/" rel="external nofollow">multiple</a> <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/11/microsoft-delays-rollout-of-the-windows-11-recall-feature-yet-again/" rel="external nofollow">delays</a>, a major under-the-hood <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/09/microsoft-details-security-privacy-overhaul-for-windows-recall-ahead-of-relaunch/" rel="external nofollow">overhaul</a>, and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/11/microsofts-controversial-recall-scraper-is-finally-entering-public-preview/" rel="external nofollow">five months of testing</a> in Microsoft's Windows Insider beta program. Microsoft signaled that Recall was nearly ready for release two weeks ago when it came to the near-final <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2025/04/10/releasing-windows-11-build-26100-3902-to-the-release-preview-channel/" rel="external nofollow">Release Preview channel</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/04/in-depth-with-windows-11-recall-and-what-microsoft-has-and-hasnt-fixed/" rel="external nofollow">Testing of the new version of Recall</a>, both by Ars and <a href="https://doublepulsar.com/microsoft-recall-on-copilot-pc-testing-the-security-and-privacy-implications-ddb296093b6c" rel="external nofollow">other security researchers</a>, found that the company had addressed many of the substantive complaints about Recall's security and added better automated content filtering to help keep the feature from storing some kinds of sensitive information (though this filtering is still inconsistent). But most significantly, Microsoft has made Recall a feature you must opt in to using rather than opt out of using, and it's possible to remove it completely.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Recall is the most high-profile feature in the release Microsoft is starting to roll out today, but there are a few other changes in it for Copilot+ PCs. One is a new version of Windows' Search function, which "can understand the contextual meaning of words or phrases, making search more natural and intuitive." This natural-language search can be used in the Search box in the Taskbar, in File Explorer, and in the Settings app. Another new feature, called "Click to Do," lets you copy text from images, search the content on your screen, and quickly summarize or rewrite on-screen text (you can invoke it by pressing the Windows key and then clicking, hence Click to Do).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-copilot-ai-pc-requirements-are-embarrassing-for-intel-and-amd/" rel="external nofollow">Copilot+ PCs</a> have specific hardware requirements beyond the ones necessary to run Windows 11. The most significant is the requirement for a neural processing unit (NPU) that can process more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). The NPU enables more processing of AI and machine learning models on-device so that these features can work more quickly and without sending sensitive personal information to Microsoft's servers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The only consumer processors that currently support Copilot+ are Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, Intel's Core Ultra 200V-series laptop chips (codenamed Lunar Lake), and AMD's Ryzen AI 300 series. Copilot+ features have generally been coming to the Arm-based Qualcomm PCs first and to x86-based Intel and AMD PCs later; Recall and the improved Search are available for both Arm and x86 PCs, while some Click to Do features are currently only available for Arm systems.

		<li>
			After you do a PC reset under Settings &gt; System &gt; Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26200. This will not prevent you from getting future Beta Channel updates, which will resolve this issue.

			[NEW] Some Insiders are experiencing an issue where using their Xbox Controller via Bluetooth is causing their PC to bugcheck. Here is how to resolve the issue. Open Device Manager by searching for it via the search box on your taskbar. Once Device Manager is open, click on “View” and then “Devices by Driver”. Find the driver named “oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf)” where the “XXX” will be a specific number on your PC. Right-click on that driver and click “Uninstall”.

			[REMINDER] You are always in control and can always choose to remove Recall anytime via “Turn Windows features on or off”. Removing Recall will delete entry points and binaries. Like any feature, Windows sometimes keeps temporary copies of binaries for serviceability. These Recall binaries are not executable and are eventually removed over time.

	Today is a big day for Windows 11 users, especially those with Copilot+ PCs. <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11s-flagship-ai-feature-is-now-publicly-available/" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft is finally rolling out its flagship AI feature</a>, Recall, alongside Click to Do and AI-powered Windows Search. To get those features on supported PCs, you need KB5055627, which is now out. In addition to new stuff for Copilot+ PCs, it introduces changes and improvements for the rest of the computers running Windows 11 version 24H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Microsoft is rolling out gradually:
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		[<strong>Recall (preview)</strong>]
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		New! You work across so many apps, sites, and documents it can be hard to remember where you saw something you want to get back to. Recall (preview) saves you time by offering an entirely new way to search for things you’ve seen or done on your PC securely. With the AI capabilities of Copilot+ PCs, it’s now possible to quickly find and get back to any app, website, image, or document just by describing its content. To use Recall, you will need to opt-in to save snapshots, which are images of your activity, and enroll in Windows Hello to confirm your presence so only you can access your snapshots. You are always in control of what snapshots are saved and can pause saving snapshots at any time. As you use your Copilot+ PC throughout the day working on documents or presentations, taking video calls, and context switching across activities, Recall will take regular snapshots and help you find things faster and easier. When you need to find or get back to something you’ve done previously, open Recall and authenticate with Windows Hello. When you’ve found what you were looking for, you can reopen the application, website, or document, or use Click to Do to act on any image or text in the snapshot you found. For more info, see Retrace your steps with Recall.
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		[<strong>Click to Do (preview)</strong>]
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			New! Click to Do (preview) makes it easier than ever for you to take immediate action on whatever catches your eye on-screen on your Copilot+ PC, saving you time by helping complete tasks inline and quickly getting you to the app that can best complete the job. For example, select an image using Click to Do to take actions like erasing objects using the Photos app or remove the background using Paint. To use Click to Do, simply use Windows key + mouse click or Windows key + Q. You can also enter through the Snipping Tool menu and print screen or searching “Click to Do” in the search box on the Windows taskbar. For more info, see Click to Do: do more with what's on your screen.
		</li>
		<li>
			New! On Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, Click to Do includes intelligent text actions. Use Windows key + mouse click or Windows key + Q to select a text block and then drag to select the text that you want. You’ll see options to Summarize or to help you Rewrite your text, so it sounds more causal or more formal. These text actions leverage the capabilities of Phi Silica, the on-device Small Language Model (SLM) that is built right into Windows.
		</li>
		<li>
			New! Easily open Click to Do when you swipe from the rightmost edge of your display.
		</li>
		<li>
			New! The policies for managing Click to Do in a commercial environment.  IT admins can learn more by viewing Manage Click to Do.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		[<strong>Improved Windows Search</strong>]
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			New!  Finding your documents, photos, and settings across Windows 11 is easier on Copilot+ PCs with improved Windows Search, powered by semantic indexing models along with traditional lexical indexing. Whether it’s searching in File Explorer, in Windows Search on your taskbar, or in Settings— just type what’s on your mind to find it on your Copilot+ PC. You no longer need to remember file names, exact words in file content, or settings names. Searching for settings like “change my theme” will work within the Settings app for now. Thanks to the power of the 40+ TOPS NPU onboard Copilot+ PCs, these search improvements work even when you’re not connected to the internet. To find more info, see Searching indexing in Windows. Now available on AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs.
		</li>
		<li>
			New!  Locating your photos stored and saved in the cloud is getting simpler on Copilot+ PCs. You can use your own words in the search box at the upper-right corner of File Explorer like “summer picnics.” In addition to photos stored locally on your Copilot+ PC, photos from the cloud will show up in the search results together. Exact matches for your keywords within the text of your cloud files will also show in the search results. You can try this experience out today with your personal OneDrive when signed in with your Microsoft account and connected to the internet. Now available on AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs.
		</li>
	</ul>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>

	Earlier this month, Microsoft confirmed a problem with Classic Outlook wherein<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/typing-on-classic-outlook-is-hogging-pcs-with-high-cpu-usage-microsoft-shares-workaround/" rel="external nofollow"> typing would lead to high CPU usage</a> and system resource hogging. The company said that the processor utilization would hit as high as 30-50%. The tech giant had provided a workaround for the problem and that involved switching to the Semi Annual channel.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The company earlier today provided an update on the issue. It says that the Word support team has devised a fix for the problem and it would be deployed on the Current channel and beta channel soon. Microsoft writes:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<strong>STATUS: FIXED</strong>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The Word Team implemented a fix which will go to the following channels soon:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ul>
		<li>
			Beta Channel (Version 2505 Build 18822.15000) – ETA early May 2025, to check for build, go to <a class="ocpExternalLink" href="https://learn.microsoft.com/officeupdates/update-history-beta-channel" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Update History for Office Beta Channel - Office release notes</a>.

		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Unfortunately, though, the bug now haunts the Semi Annual channel and the way to work around the problem is to go back to version 2405. However it is not recommended and should only be done if an urgent workaround is required. It writes:
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		We found that the issue now occurs in Semi Annual Channel. If you urgently need to work around the issue the only option would be to revert to Version 2405. This is not recommended since there have been security updates since that version. To make the change do the following:
	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

	<ol style="list-style-type:decimal">
		<li>
			<p>
				Locate the build of Version 2405 for the respective channel you are on from <a class="ocpExternalLink" href="https://learn.microsoft.com/officeupdates/update-history-microsoft365-apps-by-date" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps (listed by date) - Office release notes</a>.
			</p>

			<p>

			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Open a Command Prompt (Run as Administrator).
			</p>

			<p>

			</p>
		</li>
		<li>
			<p>
				Type or past the command below and put the build from Step 1 and then press Enter:<br>
				<br>
				<span class="ocpUserInput">"<code>%programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.17628.20144</code></span>
			</p>

			<p>

			</p>
		</li>
	</ol>

	<p>
		Alternately you can use the Office Deployment Tool to switch to an earlier version of a channel. For more information, go to <a class="ocpArticleLink" href="/en-us/topic/how-to-revert-to-an-earlier-version-of-office-2bd5c457-a917-d57e-35a1-f709e3dda841" rel="">How to revert to an earlier version of Office</a>.

	Pour one out for the Windows Maps app. Microsoft has just confirmed that the program is deprecated and will soon be removed from the Microsoft Store. The company has updated its official list of deprecated features with details about the removal of the Windows Maps app.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The writing on the wall was out there for Windows Maps. Microsoft removed offline maps support some time ago, and as of Windows 11 version 24H2, it is no longer included with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-windows-maps-and-movies-and-tv-apps-from-clean-windows-11-installations/" rel="external nofollow">clean Windows installations</a>. However, you can still get the app from the Microsoft Store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/deprecated-features" rel="external nofollow">the official documentation</a>, the Windows Maps app will be removed from the Microsoft Store in July 2025. Before that, the company will ship the final update that will make the program fully inoperable. Those who want to use Bing Maps can switch to the web version, which is available via this link.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Microsoft <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/deprecated-features-resources#maps-app" rel="external nofollow">says</a> about the upcoming end of the Windows Maps app:

		Maps is deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store by July 2025. At this time, there will also be a final update to the app from the Store that makes it nonfunctional. If you remove the app before July 2025, you can still reinstall it from the Store, but past July 2025 you won't be able to reinstall it. You'll be able to uninstall the app at any time. Any personal data or files you have saved, such as guided navigation or URLs to maps, won't be removed, but they'll no longer function in the Maps app past July 2025.

	And it’s prototyping its own web browser.
</h3>

<p>
	Legacy search brand Yahoo has been working on its own web browser prototype, and says it would like to buy Google’s Chrome if the company is forced by a court to sell it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The information came out during the fourth day of the Justice Department’s remedies trial to rectify Google’s search monopoly. The DOJ has — among other proposals — requested Judge Amit Mehta break up Google by <a href="/2024/11/27/24302415/doj-google-search-antitrust-remedies-chrome-android" rel="">requiring it sell its Chrome browser</a>, which the agency says is a key distribution channel for its popular search engine that’s amassed too much power for anyone else to compete. Yahoo isn’t the only company interested in buying Chrome. While DuckDuckGo’s CEO said they wouldn’t be able to afford it, <a href="/policy/654835/perplexity-google-antitrust-trial-remedies-chrome" rel="">witnesses from Perplexity and OpenAI</a> both expressed interest in the popular browser on the stand this week.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Yahoo seems to agree that owning a web browser is a very important portal for search, and is looking to run its own, either through developing or buying one. Yahoo Search General Manager Brian Provost testified that about 60% of search queries are done through a web browser; many people search directly from the address bar. That’s why, Provost testified, since last summer Yahoo has been “actively internally developing a prototype of a browser” to understand what it would need to do to put one out in the market. He added that Yahoo is in “ongoing” discussions with other companies about buying a browser, though he would not publicly state which ones it’s in talks with.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For Yahoo, prototyping its own browser will take six to nine months, Provost estimated. Acquiring Chrome would likely be a much faster way to ramp up to scale. Provost called Chrome “arguably the most important strategic player on the web,” and estimated
</p>

<p>
	Yahoo’s search market share could jump from 3 percent to double digits if it were able to buy the browser. He estimated the deal would cost tens of billions of dollars, and said Yahoo would be able to secure that funding with the backing of its owner, Apollo Global Management. Apollo actually owns a browser brand that was at the center of a different antitrust case, but Provost said he wouldn’t consider it an active browser. The brand’s name? <a href="https://www.theringer.com/2018/05/18/tech/microsoft-antitrust-lawsuit-netscape-internet-explorer-20-years" rel="external nofollow">NetScape</a>.

	Just weeks after <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-brings-windows-on-arm-runner-support-to-github-actions-for-all-public-repositories/" rel="external nofollow">bringing Windows on Arm runner support to GitHub</a>, which makes it easier for developers to build and test software for Arm natively, Microsoft has announced another significant development for those targeting Arm-powered devices running Windows. Native builds of PyTorch are now <a href="https://download.pytorch.org/whl/torch" rel="external nofollow">officially available</a> for Windows on Arm.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you haven’t heard of it, <a href="https://pytorch.org/" rel="external nofollow">PyTorch</a><a href="http://pytorch.org/" rel="external nofollow"> is a go-to open-source</a> machine learning framework that a lot of researchers and developers use to build and train deep neural networks. Before now, getting it to run on Windows devices with Arm chips was a pain since you had to compile the whole thing from source yourself, which takes time and is not beginner-friendly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With the release of PyTorch 2.7, native Arm builds for Windows on Arm are now readily available for Python 3.12. This means developers can simply install PyTorch using a <a href="http://pypi.org/project/pip/" rel="external nofollow">standard package manager like pip</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Microsoft:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		This unlocks the potential to leverage the full performance of Arm64 architecture on Windows devices, like Copilot+ PCs, for machine learning experimentation, providing a robust platform for developers and researchers to innovate and refine their models.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The availability of these native builds is expected to boost local development, training, and testing of machine learning models directly on Arm-powered Windows machines. Microsoft specifically mentioned use cases such as image classification, natural language processing, and generative AI like Stable Diffusion.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To get started with the native PyTorch binaries on Windows on Arm, developers first need to ensure they have a few key prerequisites installed. This includes obtaining specific components from <a href="https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vs_BuildTools.exe" rel="external nofollow">Visual Studio Build Tools</a> or a <a href="https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/downloads/" rel="external nofollow">full Visual Studio installation</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Specifically, you will need the Desktop development with C++ workload and make sure the VS 2022 C++ ARM64/ARM64EC build tools (latest) are selected within the installer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You also need to <a href="http://www.rust-lang.org/" rel="external nofollow">install Rust</a> and, of course, have Python 3.12 (the Arm64 version) installed on your system. Once those are in place, installing the stable PyTorch build via pip is a straightforward command pointing to the correct download index:
</p>

<pre style="margin-left: 40px;"><code class="language-shell hljs">pip install --extra-index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl torch
</code></pre>

<p>
	If you are interested in trying out the latest features and are comfortable with less stable builds, you can also install the Nightly or Preview version using this command:
</p>

<pre style="margin-left: 40px;"><code class="language-shell hljs">pip install --pre torch --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/nightly/cpu
</code></pre>

<p>
	Beyond the Python package, native builds for LibTorch, PyTorch's C++ front-end often used for deployment scenarios, are also available. The getting started and installation guide for LibTorch can be accessed directly on PyTorch's website. As is good practice for any Python development, Microsoft also recommends creating a <a href="http://docs.python.org/3/library/venv.html" rel="external nofollow">Virtual Environment (venv) </a>for your projects to manage dependencies cleanly and avoid conflicts between different project requirements.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft also provided an example of using the native PyTorch binaries for <em>Stable Diffusion</em> on Windows on Arm, demonstrating how developers can build applications leveraging generative AI. If you're interested, you can find the code in this <a href="https://github.com/Windows-on-ARM-Experiments/pytorch-examples/tree/main/stable-diffusion" rel="external nofollow">GitHub repo</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is worth noting that while PyTorch and LibTorch themselves now have native binaries for Windows on Arm, the story is not always so complete for every single dependency you might need. Some additional Python packages developers might use alongside PyTorch, especially those with performance-sensitive code often written in C, C++, or Rust, may not yet have pre-compiled native Arm64 .whl files available on PyPI. This means a simple pip install might not find a ready-to-use native version for every single library in your environment.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, pip does have a capability to automatically install dependencies directly from source code distributions, often provided as .tar.gz files. If the necessary build tools are present on your system, which is why prerequisites like MSVC with the Arm64 toolchain and Rust were mentioned earlier, pip can compile these packages into Windows-compatible .whl files locally.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Microsoft pointed out that this method can be used to install specific versions of popular packages like NumPy 2.2.3 and safetensors 0.5.3, and shared the commands to do it:
</p>

<pre style="margin-left: 40px;"><code class="language-shell hljs">pip install numpy==2.2.3
<span class="hljs-meta prompt_"># </span><span class="language-bash">and</span>
pip install safetensors==0.5.3
</code></pre>

<p>
	as examples of packages that can be installed via compilation from source.
</p>

<p>

</p>

	Windows 11 isn't perfect. It has big issues, and small issues. Here are six small issues that I wish Microsoft would fix.
</h3>

<p>
	I've been a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows" rel="external nofollow">Windows</a> user pretty much all my life. I've tried switching to the Mac and all kinds of Linux distributions, but I always find myself back on Windows because it's just the best, in my opinion. However, that does not mean it's perfect, and I wouldn't want anyone, even Microsoft, thinking it was.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A lot of my issues with Windows are <em>very</em> minor. I'm a sucker for detail (e.g. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-making-windows-11-a-little-bit-worse-for-touch-users" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-making-windows-11-a-little-bit-worse-for-touch-users" rel="external nofollow">my thoughts on touch in Windows</a><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-windows-dark-mode-has-been-embarrassingly-incomplete-for-nearly-a-decade" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-windows-dark-mode-has-been-embarrassingly-incomplete-for-nearly-a-decade" rel="external nofollow">, </a>or <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-wrong-the-new-outlook-for-windows-is-not-ready-for-prime-time" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-wrong-the-new-outlook-for-windows-is-not-ready-for-prime-time" rel="external nofollow">the terrible new Outlook app</a>), and sadly Windows doesn't always do a great job when it comes to paying attention to detail. But it's hard to complain about such minor issues across the OS because there are usually bigger fish to fry, like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-finally-ready-to-ship-windows-recall-after-almost-year-long-delay" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-finally-ready-to-ship-windows-recall-after-almost-year-long-delay" rel="external nofollow">trying to ship Windows Recall</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But I say, screw that! Small and unimportant details are just as big a deal as significant game-breaking issues.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So, here are the top 6 "first-world" problems I have with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11" data-before-rewrite-redirect="/windows-11" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11" rel="external nofollow">Windows 11</a> that I would like Microsoft to address.

		</p>

		<p>
			<em><span itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></em>
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			I personally consider this one a major problem, but I understand that 99% of Windows users will never know or care that this even happens. When setting up a Windows 11 PC, signing in to your <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/microsoft-account" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/microsoft-account" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft Account</a> will create a local user directory named after the first five letters of your email address, not your first name.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			So if your name is Jack, but your email is "iamthenight@outlook," your user directory becomes "iamth" located at C:\Users\iamth, and everything you store on your computer is saved into this directory. It's so very frustrating if you're someone who manually navigates to your local directory in places like Terminal or File Explorer.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			Once that directory is created, it cannot be changed, and so you'll be stuck with that local directory for the remainder of your time using that Windows install. The only way to fix this is to <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-set-windows-11-without-microsoft-account" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-set-windows-11-without-microsoft-account" rel="external nofollow">bypass signing into an MSA during Windows 11's setup experience</a>, type your first name as your username, and that will create the correct directory.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>

		<div id="slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-Qj6BxEPCNRqJcmPkoXJ8ni">
			<div data-hydrate="true">
				<p>
					Microsoft needs to change the way the MSA login creates user directories on Windows 11 if it wants me to sign in with one during setup. It should use your first name attached to your Microsoft Account, or better yet, let the user create their own user name in addition to signing into a Microsoft Account. MacOS does this, so I don't see why Windows can't.
				</p>

				<h2 id="section-2-missing-taskbar-thumbnail-preview-animations">
					<span>2. Missing Taskbar thumbnail preview animations</span>

					</div>
				</div>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					I've always hated this about Windows 11, but the animations around Taskbar thumbnail previews are quite janky. When Windows 11 first launched, it didn't have an animation, but today, it finally has one when you hover over the first app.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					However, it doesn't have one when moving the cursor between open apps.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					This is annoying because every version of Windows, starting with <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-7" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-7" rel="external nofollow">Windows 7</a>, had a smooth, fluid animation for the thumbnail previews when moving between open apps, and it's just not there on Windows 11.
				</p>

				<p>

				</p>

				<p>
					This makes the OS feel janky when using this feature, and I wish Microsoft would polish it up.
				</p>

						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							This may be a first-world problem, but it's also a real and serious issue, especially if your eyes are sensitive to bright light. <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-windows-dark-mode-has-been-embarrassingly-incomplete-for-nearly-a-decade" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsofts-windows-dark-mode-has-been-embarrassingly-incomplete-for-nearly-a-decade" rel="external nofollow">Windows' dark mode is incomplete and has been for almost a decade.</a>
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							It's shameful, and Microsoft doesn't seem to care, making zero moves even to pretend to work on it.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							When dark mode is enabled, you'll often find light mode interfaces all over the Windows UI, especially in File Explorer. Copy dialogs, file properties, and settings applets are all still in light mode. The Run dialog? Light mode. The Registry Editor? Light mode. It's everywhere and makes Windows 11 feel incomplete.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							It wouldn't be so bad if these light interfaces were few and far between, but I see them literally every day in general use across Windows, and I'm not just referring to third-party apps, as ironically, all of my third-party apps actually support dark mode and do so very well. It's Microsoft's own software that doesn't.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							At this point, I'm used to Windows flashbanging me at 1AM when I'm working at my computer, but those who are genuinely sensitive to bright light or white flashes should be cautious.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Microsoft really should prioritize finishing dark mode on Windows 11.
						</p>

						<h2 id="section-4-task-view-and-virtual-desktops-animations">

						<p>
							Unless I'm using a PC that drives Windows via a <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/gpu" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/gpu" rel="external nofollow">dedicated graphics card</a>, opening <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-task-view-windows-10" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-task-view-windows-10" rel="external nofollow">Task View</a> almost always results in an animation that's barely able to maintain 15 frames a second. It's so choppy that it makes even the <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-laptop-7-copilot-pc-review" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/laptops/surface-laptop-7-copilot-pc-review" rel="external nofollow">Surface Laptop 7</a> feel antiquated. It's been this way for years; shockingly, Microsoft hasn't tried to fix it.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							It's always most laggy when you access Task View after not opening it for a while. Sometimes, it can only show maybe four frames when opening it from cold, and depending on how many apps and virtual desktops you have running, the animation sometimes doesn't even play out.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							And that hasn't even touched upon the animation when you <em>switch</em> between <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-be-more-productive-using-desktops-windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-be-more-productive-using-desktops-windows-11" rel="external nofollow">Virtual Desktops.</a>
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							What is happening here? Why does the Taskbar disappear like that? Why does the Taskbar become opaque? Why does the whole thing look and feel janky?
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							If you told me the Task View and Virtual Desktop feature in Windows 11 was still in beta, I'd absolutely believe you.

						</div>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Although technically separate on Windows 10, the transition between the two interfaces is relatively seamless on that OS, so it feels like they are one and the same.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							That cannot be said for Windows 11, which has a search bar <em>in</em> the Start menu that doesn't even pretend to be real. It's a button that opens the separate search pane, but zero animation blends this transition.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							It just appears, and the search pane isn't the same shape and size as the Start menu, making the transition even more apparent.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							I've always hated this about Windows 11, and I wish Microsoft would make the transition between Start and Search more seamless. Make it morph into it so that it seems deliberate, not unfinished.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							Or, better yet, integrate search back into the Start menu. There's no reason for it to be separate.
						</p>

						<p>

						</p>

						<p>
							At least there's <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-finally-fixing-my-biggest-issues-with-the-windows-11-start-menu" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-is-finally-fixing-my-biggest-issues-with-the-windows-11-start-menu" rel="external nofollow">an updated Start menu coming for Windows 11</a> that addresses some other complaints.

									<em>So why does Windows still advertise these services to me?</em>
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									I often see Windows asking me to use Edge, even though I already use it. I get popups asking me to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass and backup using OneDrive, two things I already do. These appear as notifications and on the lock screen.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Why can't Windows "see" I'm doing these things and stop advertising them?
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									I think it's ridiculous that Windows can't tell that these are things I already have and use, and stop pushing advertisements for them.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									I get advertising to users who don't have them, but what's the point in promoting them to me? I know I'm already giving you all my money for these services; I don't need reminding.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									The good news is that you can just as easily <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/how-to-disable-annoying-ads-on-windows-11" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/how-to-disable-annoying-ads-on-windows-11" rel="external nofollow">disable these annoying Windows 11 ad notifications</a> and be done with them.

									Wrapping it up

								<p>
									Microsoft's Windows 11 has made strides in modernizing the PC experience, but several design flaws keep it from being a truly polished operating system.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									While ambitious, the animations often feel inconsistent and janky, undermining the fluidity that users expect from a premium OS.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									The Start menu, a cornerstone of Windows, struggles with its search functionality—delivering slow or irrelevant results that frustrate users.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Meanwhile, the dark mode remains incomplete, with legacy elements stubbornly refusing to adapt, leaving users with a fragmented experience.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Another sore point is the integration of ads within the OS. These ads often lack intelligent personalization, making them feel intrusive rather than helpful.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									The coexistence of old and new UI elements, such as the Control Panel alongside modern settings, further highlights the lack of cohesion in design.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Features like <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/widgets" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/widgets" rel="external nofollow">Widgets</a>, while <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-widgets-will-finally-become-usable-thanks-to-an-upcoming-update" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-11-widgets-will-finally-become-usable-thanks-to-an-upcoming-update" rel="external nofollow">promisin</a>g, feel underdeveloped and redundant for many users.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									Addressing these issues is not only recommended but essential if Microsoft wants Windows 11 to be taken seriously as a refined platform.
								</p>

								<p>

								</p>

								<p>
									<em>What do you think? </em>Are my criticisms here ridiculous and too nitpicky, or are they spot on? And what do <em>you</em> consider to be some other poor design choices in Windows 11?

	As we get closer to the middle of 2025, rumors about this year's Windows 11 update begin to surface on the internet. This time, the information was dug out straight from the latest Windows 11 preview build from the Canary Channel, which was released earlier this week.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	@<a href="https://x.com/XenoPanther/status/1915091948936851650" rel="external nofollow">XenoPanther</a> on X went through the code bits of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-build-27842-gets-redesigned-green-screen-of-death-and-reworked-battery-indicator/" rel="external nofollow">build 27842</a>, namely the AppraiserRes.dll file (one of the files that checks whether your PC is compatible with Windows 11 and various versions), and discovered mentions of GE25H2 with build number 26200.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For reference, GE stands for Germanium, one of Microsoft's codenames for development milestones. Microsoft moved Windows 11 to Germanium builds with <a href="https://www.neowin.net/reviews/here-is-everything-new-in-windows-11-version-24h2/" rel="external nofollow">the release of Windows 11 version 24H2</a> or "2024 Update," in the second half of last year. It was a full system update, unlike the previous release, version 23H2. The latter was a "small" enablement package that turned on new features while still being based on Windows 11 version 22H2.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, it looks like Windows 11 version 25H2 will repeat that scenario. Version 25H2 could land in the second half of 2025 as an enablement package, and a small bump in the build number (26200 vs 26100 in version 24H2) further backs this suggestion.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Having this year's feature update as a small enablement package might be good news to many Windows 11 users. There is a popular belief that version 24H2 is one of the least polished Windows 11 feature updates due to a large number of bugs and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-version-24h2-is-now-available-for-download/" rel="external nofollow">known issues that Microsoft is still patching to this day</a>. Hopefully, version 25H2 will be a less problematic update to millions of people who will ditch Windows 10 as it gets closer to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-extends-windows-10-life-for-consumers-if-they-pay-30/" rel="external nofollow">the end of mainstream support</a> on October 14, 2025.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, none of this is officially confirmed, and Microsoft has yet to announce Windows 11 version 25H2 and the way it plans to update users from the currently supported versions 23H2 and 24H2. Therefore, take these discoveries with a fair share of scepticism.

	Files Preview has been updated to a new version with a bunch of improvements and quality-of-life changes. Version 3.9.7 of this popular file manager for Windows 11 and 10 is now available, and it brings an improved sidebar, file size format customization, and other changes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With version 3.9.1, Files received a reworked release notes experience. Now, upon launching the app after installing the latest update, Files will open a new tab with the changelog to let users know about new features, improvements, and tweaks.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Next is a slightly improved sidebar, which now has placeholder text that should help users better understand how the sidebar works and what they can do with it. Also, there are several improvements to the app's settings. You can now right-click the settings icon to access the JSON file and tweak available options in an editor. Also, you can now specify file size units—binary or decimal.
</p>

	Finally, Files 3.9.1 adds automatic encoding detection for extracting ZIP files. When creating a compressed folder, Files defaults to UTF-8.

	Last October, Microsoft <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-11-version-24h2-is-now-available-for-download/" rel="external nofollow">blessed us with Windows 11 24H2</a>, bringing various improvements like updates to Copilot, better file management with TAR and 7z archive support, a new Energy Saver mode, and enhanced compatibility for newer PCs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Soon after the update started rolling out, some players of the beloved classic <em>Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas</em> began reporting a bizarre problem: the <a href="https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Skimmer" rel="external nofollow">Skimmer seaplane</a> (shown below) was completely missing from the game world and could not be found anywhere.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	These reports started circulating among the game's community and eventually landed on the radar of Silent, the developer known for <a href="https://github.com/CookiePLMonster/SilentPatch/" rel="external nofollow">SilentPatch</a>. If you don't know what SilentPatch is, it is a passion project with unofficial fixes to squash bugs and improve how older PC games, especially the <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> titles, run on modern computer systems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Silent (AKA <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/cookieplmonster.bsky.social" rel="external nofollow">CookiePLMonster</a>) initially figured it might be an issue caused by other mods or perhaps a specific setup, as is common with older games and many user configurations. However, the reports kept coming, and some players insisted the bug happened even on a game installation with no other modifications after they updated to Windows 11 24H2. One user <a href="https://gtaforums.com/topic/669045-silentpatch/page/326/#findComment-1072455720" rel="external nofollow">posting on GTAForums</a> captured the general confusion:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">

	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Convinced the issue was real, Silent decided to investigate directly. He set up a test environment with Windows 11 24H2 and a clean installation of <em>GTA San Andreas</em>. Sure enough, loading the game confirmed the Skimmer was gone from its usual spot on the water.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Things got even weirder when he tried to force the game to create the plane using an in-game command. Instead of appearing normally, the game glitched and launched the player character an astronomical distance into the sky.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Debugging GTA San Andreas" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745431143_gta_sa_5kolupphle.jpg">

<p>
	Without SilentPatch installed, this sends the game camera into a visual mess; with SilentPatch installed, the game simply freezes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That chaotic behavior of being launched sky-high strongly hinted at numerical errors, likely involving floating-point values, within the game's logic. When the game froze with SilentPatch installed, Silent could see exactly where it happened in the code: inside a function called CPlane::PreRender, stuck in a loop trying to adjust the plane's rotor blade angle.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="The bug withwithout SilentPatch installed" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745431947_silent-patch.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	The value it was using for the blade speed (m_fBladeSpeed) was enormous, around 3.73e+29. This kind of impossibly large number meant tiny adjustments were ineffective, leading to the freeze. This huge speed value was ultimately derived from the plane's altitude, confirming the launch into the sky was the initial symptom of something being fundamentally wrong with the plane's properties.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Silent traced the source of this problem back to the code that handles setting up a vehicle's physics the first time it loads. This process calculates things like the vehicle's "bounding box" - an invisible box defining its physical boundaries. A critical part of this setup involves adjusting the bounding box's vertical limit (its Z value) based on the vehicle's suspension. He discovered that for the Skimmer, this calculation was using incorrect numbers, resulting in a corrupted Z value for the bounding box, specifically something like -4.30747210e+33. This impossible value was what caused the game to think the plane was at an extreme height, triggering the sky-launch and the subsequent numerical errors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The deeper Silent went, the more he realized the core issue was tied to how the Skimmer is defined in one of the game's configuration files, vehicles.ide. The Skimmer's entry in this file was shorter than other planes, missing a couple of key numbers needed for its setup - specifically, the size of its wheels.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This was likely a leftover from <em>Grand Theft Auto: Vice City</em>, where the Skimmer was classified as a boat and did not need these 'wheel' parameters. When Rockstar changed it to a plane in <em>San Andreas</em>, they forgot to update its line in vehicles.ide to include these now-required values.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The game's function for loading vehicle data, CFileLoader::LoadVehicleObject, uses sscanf to read the parameters from the vehicles.ide line into local variables. The critical flaw here is that the game's code did not initialize the local variables intended for the wheel size parameters to a default value (like 0.0), nor did it check if sscanf successfully read values for them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This meant that when the game read the Skimmer's line, which was missing those parameters, the local variables on the program's stack intended for the wheel sizes simply held whatever data was already present in those memory locations from previous function calls. This is a big no-no in programming because it relies on pure chance - the contents of <a href="https://medium.com/@ping4vishal/the-unpredictability-of-uninitialized-variables-in-c-c-e0215c28d05f" rel="external nofollow">uninitialized variables are unpredictable</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, here is where Windows 11 24H2 enters the picture and exposes this hidden flaw. For nearly twenty years, on many versions of Windows, including Windows 10, a strange bit of luck kept this bug from appearing on PC. The vehicles.ide file is read sequentially. The entry for the 'Topfun' van comes right before the Skimmer's entry. The <a href="https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Top_Fun" rel="external nofollow">Top Fun van</a> <em>does</em> have wheel size values defined, and they are both 0.7.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	By pure coincidence, on older Windows versions, the memory on the stack used to store Topfun's wheel sizes after its entry was processed was not overwritten by other operations before the game's code started reading the Skimmer's entry. So, when the game looked at the uninitialized stack locations for the Skimmer's wheel sizes, it accidentally picked up the stale 0.7 values left behind by Topfun. The calculations would then proceed using 0.7, resulting in a mostly functional, if technically incorrect, setup for the Skimmer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="On Windows 10 the stack values didnt change much between the calls In fact you can spot the two values of 0x3F449BA6 0768 highlighted on the screenshot They correspond to Landstalkers wheel scales" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745432068_stack-win10.jpg">
	<figcaption>
		On Windows 10, the stack values didn’t change much between the calls.
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	However, Windows 11 24H2 brought some internal changes. One small change was in how a low-level Windows function (<a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/synchapi/nf-synchapi-leavecriticalsection" rel="external nofollow">LeaveCriticalSection</a>), part of the C runtime library and involved in tidying up after reading files line by line, used temporary memory on the stack. This function started using slightly more stack space. This minor shift was just enough that when the game finished processing the Topfun line and moved to the Skimmer line, that specific stack location where the 0.7 values used to linger was now overwritten by this internal Windows function call before the Skimmer's variables were accessed.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	So, on Windows 11 24H2, when the game went to read the Skimmer line and loaded its uninitialized local variables from the stack, that memory spot no longer held the lucky 0.7 from Topfun. It held arbitrary data left by the updated Windows function. This unpredictable data was then used in the calculation for the Skimmer's physical setup, resulting in a wildly incorrect value for its bounding box Z coordinate, causing the plane to essentially disappear or launch the player into space.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="On Windows 11 24H2 more stack space was modified by a new implementation of Critical Sections" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745432089_stack-win11.jpg">
	<figcaption>
		<em>On Windows 11 24H2, more stack space was modified by a new implementation of Critical Sections.</em>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	Silent makes it clear that this is not a bug in Windows 11 24H2. The way internal operating system functions use stack memory is not something programs are supposed to rely on; those details can change anytime Microsoft updates things.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The real bug has always been in <em>Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas</em>, which was incorrectly depending on a lucky memory layout that persisted for years. Silent will include a proper code fix for this in the next SilentPatch update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For players who want to fix this issue themselves right now, before the next SilentPatch update, it is possible to manually edit the game's vehicles.ide file. Simply open data\vehicles.ide in your San Andreas directory with Notepad, find the line starting with "460, skimmer", and replace it with:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		460, skimmer, skimmer, plane, SEAPLANE, SKIMMER, null, ignore, 5, 0, 0, -1, 0.7, 0.7, -1
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Save the file, and the Skimmer should reappear. Silent notes that a similar issue occurred with <em>Bully Scholarship Edition</em> breaking on Windows 10 for analogous reasons.

	Microsoft is improving Copilot's referencing capabilities in Office documents. With the latest update, Word users can reference more data when creating, reviewing, and finalizing Word documents. For example, you can ask Copilot to write an analysis of a certain topic based on a certain file. Microsoft says users wanted to have more flexibility in this feature, so it is now allowing you to reference an entire folder, not just a specific file.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Copilot prompt in Word for the Web" class="ipsImage" height="421" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745430303_copilot_in_word.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	In addition to files, emails, and meetings, Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word can dive into a whole folder that is stored on OneDrive or SharePoint. Just keep in mind that if a folder has over 10 files, Copilot will refer to the 10 most recent files.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another change coming with today's update is support for larger documents. Now, you can reference documents with up to 1.5 million words or 3,000 pages, plus you can reference up to 20 items when using the Draft with Copilot feature.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Folder referencing is now available in Word for the Web, and <a href="https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/expanding-reference-capabilities-with-microsoft-365-copilot-in-word/4406054" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft plans</a> to bring it to desktop apps on Windows and Mac in July 2025. As for the ability to reference up to 20 files and large-sized Word documents, these two changes will be available in Word for the web and desktop apps later this month.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you want to try this feature out, head to Word for the Web and create a new document, then open the Copilot prompt window, type your request, and place a forward slash (or click the paperclip button) to open the upload UI. Specify what files you want to reference and click the blue button with an arrow.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Other Copilot improvements in Word that Microsoft recently introduced include better voice note handling and the ability to transcribe them into prebuilt or custom templates. You can learn more about that <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-makes-it-easier-to-turn-voice-notes-into-well-made-documents-in-word-on-mobile/" rel="external nofollow">here</a>.

Find the driver named “oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf)” where the “XXX” will be a specific number on your PC. Right-click on that driver and click “Uninstall”.

	YouTube turned 20 a month ago, with its <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw" rel="external nofollow">first video</a> hitting that milestone today. It looks like the UI designers and frontend developers at the video giant have been busy, as a new video player interface is now in testing for some users.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This fresh coat of paint moves things around quite a bit compared to the layout users have been accustomed to for a decade.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="A comparison of the old and new player UI" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745419569_old-new-player.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	As you can see, the new UI features buttons for each prominent action. The Play/Pause button is more prominent, followed by the Next button, the video timestamp, and video chapters, all nestled in their own pills or capsules.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The volume button is being shifted onto the other side of the player controls, now sharing its capsule with the rest of the action icons like settings and fullscreen. YouTube has also embraced a frosted-glass style for its player menus, using a semi-transparent Gaussian blur to softly mute the video content behind the controls.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="A comparison of the old and new in player menu" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/04/1745419602_old-new-menu.jpg">
</figure>

<p>
	A potentially significant functional change appears to be the volume control. Seemingly, you can no longer hover on the volume slider and scroll or even use the up or down keys to adjust the audio. Neowin also noticed that installing extensions, such as Sponsorblock, might affect the placement of menus within this new design.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This isn't the first time YouTube has tinkered with its interface or made changes that rubbed users the wrong way. Perhaps one of the most memorable UI controversies was the<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/youtubes-material-you-redesign-is-now-rolling-out-to-all-users/" rel="external nofollow"> removal of the iconic bright red subscribe button</a>, a staple of the platform's identity for years.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This change saw the prominent red button replaced with a white or grey button featuring red text. This move was met with surprise, dislike, and confusion among users and creators who felt the new button was less visible and did not stand out as effectively as a call to action.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	More recently, there was controversy over <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/1k06ona/why_are_the_thumbnails_suddenly_huge/" rel="external nofollow">larger thumbnails on the homepage</a> and tests that <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/1b0r9h7/the_comments_on_a_video_and_the_description_have/" rel="external nofollow">moved video descriptions and comments into a sidebar</a>, separating them from related videos. The removal of the public dislike count also generated significant backlash from the community, as did past changes to monetization that impacted creators.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As for the updated player UI, some netizens are not happy with the look. Reactions shared online indicate significant frustration with the altered layout and perceived loss of functionality. Some users were quick to voice their displeasure and <a href="https://old.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/1k5sb37/this_is_the_worst_ui_change_yet/mokq03f/" rel="external nofollow">questioned the necessity of the change entirely</a>:
</p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The UI was already fine, but they need to justify why Google has to pay them so they'll keep working on pointless and bad updates.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	In other YouTube news, the platform's Music service now lets you<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/youtube-music-now-lets-you-share-lyrics-on-android/" rel="external nofollow"> share lyrics with other users</a>. For now, the feature is only available to select Android users, and there’s no information on when Google will bring it to other platforms.

	Following the release of <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-kb5055612-fixes-gpu-issues-in-wsl-and-improves-security/" rel="external nofollow">April 2025 non-security updates for Windows 10</a>, Microsoft is now pushing optional updates for those on Windows 11 version 23H2 and 22H2 (Enterprise and Education editions). KB5055629 (build numbers 22621.5262 and 22631.5262) is now available for download with Phone Link integration in the Start menu, File Explorer improvements, changes to Windows Widgets, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Microsoft is rolling out gradually:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			[<strong>File Explorer</strong>]

			<ul>
				<li>
					New! Pivot-based curated views on File Explorer Home that supports ease of access of Microsoft 365 content on Windows. Be more productive and get highly relevant content at your fingertips on File Explorer Home.
				</li>
				<li>
					Fixed: Improved the performance of extracting zipped files, particularly in the case where you’re unzipping a large number of small files.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Narrator</strong>] New! Keep track of what Narrator has spoken and access it for quick reference. With speech recap, you can quickly access spoken content, follow along with live transcription, and copy what Narrator last said—all with simple keyboard shortcuts.
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Phone Link</strong>] New! You can do even more with your Windows PC and your mobile device with direct access to cross-device features from the Start menu. For example, you can make phone calls, send SMS messages, access your photos, or share content between your mobile device and PC.
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Widgets</strong>]
			<ul>
				<li>
					New! Web developers can use their existing content to create interactive widgets that can be added to multiple widgets surfaces. For more info, see Web widget providers.
				</li>
				<li>
					New! Support for lock screen widgets (previously referred to as “Weather and more”) arrives on devices in the European Economic Area (EEA). You can add, remove, and rearrange lock screen widgets such as Weather, Watchlist, Sports, Traffic, and more. Any widget that supports the small sizing option can be added. To customize your lock screen widgets, navigate to Settings &gt; Personalization &gt; Lock screen.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Desktop icons</strong>] The logic for apps pinned to the desktop has been updated, so that packaged apps no longer show an accent colored backplate. For example, if you were to drag and drop Snipping Tool from the apps list in Start to the desktop the icons should be bigger and easier to see now.
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Share Sheet</strong>] Make last-minute edits such as cropping, rotating, and adding filters to images shared though the share sheet.
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Start</strong>]
			<ul>
				<li>
					Fixed: You can’t use touch gestures to view the list of apps pinned in the Start menu.
				</li>
				<li>
					Fixed: The Sign out and More options buttons in the Start menu account manager might not be visible with increased text size.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Taskbar</strong>] Fixed: If you use the arrow keys after pressing the Windows key + T, the arrows move in the wrong direction for Arabic and Hebrew display languages.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Customers who still use Windows 11 version 22H2 (Enterprise and Education editions) can get the following improvements with today's release:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<ul>
		<li>
			[<strong>Server Message Block (SMB)]</strong> Fixed: An issue where an Excel file, hosted on a SMB file share with Access Based Enumeration enabled, containing links to multiple other files hosted on network shares, might take longer to open.
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Sign in Impact</strong>] Fixed: An issue affecting the USBxHCI controller and all devices that connect to your computer using a USB port on Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 200V Series Processors. The built-in USB camera won't work with Windows Hello sign-in unless you manually disable Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). To turn off ESS, go to Settings &gt; Accounts &gt; Sign-in options &gt; Additional settings &gt; Sign in with an external camera or fingerprint reader &gt; toggle switch ON. If you create a Windows Hello container while using Windows 11, version 23H2, it might prevent you from using ESS after you upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Xbox</strong>]
			<ul>
				<li>
					This update addresses an issue affecting Xbox Elite Wireless Controllers with certain firmware versions, where the keyboard might not function and displays an error indicator in the device manager.
				</li>
				<li>
					Fixed: The driver verifier stops responding during gamepad controller driver certification, affecting Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing.
				</li>
			</ul>
		</li>
		<li>
			[<strong>Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist file (DriverSiPolicy.p7b)</strong>] This update adds to the list of drivers that are at risk for Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks.
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	As usual, feel free to skip C-updates if you do not feel like installing a preview release. However, if you want to get it, go to Windows Update in the Settings app and check for available updates. Alternatively, you can <a href="https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5055629%20" rel="external nofollow">download KB5055629 from the Microsoft Update Catalog</a>. This month's non-security updates for Windows 11 version 24H2 will be available at a later date.

	AMD has released a new chipset driver for desktop sockets AM5 and AM4, as well as for the mobile platforms. The new driver, version 7.04.09.545, is compatible with Ryzen 9000 (Zen 5), Ryzen 7000/8000G (Zen 4) AM5 CPUs, and also with Ryzen 5000/5000G (Zen 3), Ryzen 4000G/3000 (Zen 2), all the way down to Ryzen 1000 (Zen 1).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The previous AMD chipset driver, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amds-new-chipset-driver-improves-windows-1110-app-compatibility-microsoft-pluton-support/" rel="external nofollow">version 7.02.13.148</a>, was a major release as it added the new AMD Application Compatibility Database Driver, which is said to <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/amd-makes-cpu-changing-easy-as-you-wont-need-to-reinstall-windows-1110-any-more/" rel="external nofollow">make CPU swapping simpler</a>, and also improved support for the Microsoft Pluton security processor.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new chipset driver package, however, does not add any new programs or drivers, though AMD has provided a workaround for an issue that won't let users revert to a previous driver series version.
