OPPO CEO Pete Lau has already confirmed that the company will launch the OPPO Find N5 next month in China. Oppo's subsidiary, OnePlus, is expected to follow with the OnePlus Open 2, the global variant of the Find N5, later this year. The OPPO Find N5 is touted as the world's thinnest foldable and is expected to pack the biggest battery of all foldables. In addition to the Find N5, OPPO is likely to unveil its next smartwatch, the OPPO Watch X2.

The information comes directly from OPPO's product manager, Zhou Yibao. In a post on the social media platform Weibo (Chinese Twitter), Yibao shared an image of the upcoming OPPO Watch X2, which is also our first glimpse at the watch. The watch is highly likely to be rebranded as OnePlus Watch 3. The image shows a health feature detecting unusual fluctuations in blood pressure, showing a risk of hypertension, suggesting that the OPPO Watch X2 as well as the global OnePlus Watch 3 will include blood pressure monitoring.

While the watch is enclosed inside a plastic cover, the image reveals its button placement. On the top right side of the watch's frame is a redesigned circular crown, accompanied by another button on the bottom right of the frame. Apple is also anticipated to introduce the blood pressure monitoring feature alongside satellite connectivity in the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Samsung is one of the mainstream players in the smartwatch market that has been offering blood pressure monitoring features on all of its watches since the Galaxy Watch 3. However, Samsung's implementation requires a medical-grade blood pressure monitoring device for calibration. It remains to be seen if OnePlus also follows the same methodology or will offer a different technology.

Apple is back under fire in the UK, for allegedly charging unfair commissions on its App Store. Reportedly, the unfair practice may have cost approximately 20 million iPhone and iPad users in the UK up to £1.5 Billion (roughly $1.8 billion). Apple is already facing a $1 billion class action in the UK by British developers, and now app buyers have also joined forces. The UK lawsuit accuses Apple of abusing its dominant position by imposing a 30% commission on app purchases.

The case is currently being heard at London's Competition Appeal Tribunal. Notably, it marks the first mass legal action of its kind against a tech giant in the United Kingdom. With this lawsuit, Apple joins the unfortunate bandwagon of tech giants including, Google, Meta, and Amazon, who are also fighting high-value legal challenges in the country. A similar $1.1 billion case against Google, is set to begin later this year.

Rachael Kent, a UK academic leading the lawsuit, claims that Apple's dominant position and its control over app distribution has allowed the company to make huge profits while keeping app developers and users under restriction. Her legal team has urged that "Apple is not just dominant ... it holds a 100% monopoly position."

Apple, however, denied the allegations. The company's lawyer, Marie Demetriou, said in court filings that the commission reflects "the enormous benefits conferred through Apple's innovation by the iOS ecosystem as a whole". Apple insists that the commission is fair, as it also offers security and privacy benefits. Apple also highlighted that "85% of developers do not pay any commission at all." Marie also indicated that the lawsuit overlooks the value that Apple brings through its innovation and intellectual property.

Demetriou further dismissed claims that Apple should allow developers unrestricted access to its technology, calling it an unreasonable demand. The trial is expected to last seven weeks, with Apple's Chief Financial Officier, Ketan Parekh, set to testify later this week, where both sides will present their arguments. Apple has recently settled a Siri privacy lawsuit in the US by agreeing to pay $95 million in settlement.

On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, OPPO CEO Pete Lau confirmed that the OPPO Find N5 foldable will launch in February. Interestingly, Lau claimed that the upcoming Find N5 will be the world's thinnest folding flagship. While no specific details about its thinness were provided, an image was shared that compares the OPPO Find N5 with a wooden pencil.

In the image, the OPPO Find N5 appears impressive thin. A standard wooden pencil typically measures around 7-8mm. Based on the comparison as shown in the image, the OPPO Find N5 does look quite thin. Currently, the HONOR Magic V3 holds the title of the world's thinnest folding phone, measuring 9.2mm when folded and 4.4mm when unfolded. For reference, the OPPO Find N3 measured 5.8mm when unfolded.

Going by Lau's claim, for the OPPO Find N5 to clinch the crown of the world's thinnest folding phone, it has to be thinner than 4.4mm. It is speculated that the OPPO Find N5 could be 4mm thin. Also, if the phone is thin when unfolded, it is likely to be thinner when folded compared to the HONOR Magic V3.

OPPO has officially announced that the Find N5 will be launched in February, which implies that the global variant, allegedly the OnePlus Open 2, could follow soon after. Because the OnePlus Open was identical to the OPPO Find N3 and was launched shortly after the Find N3's launch in China.

It is rumored that the OnePlus Open 2 will feature a triple camera setup with a 50MP primary, 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP telephoto lens, all tuned by Hasselblad. Additionally, the OnePlus Open 2 is tipped to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and is also rumored to pack the biggest battery on any foldable. The phone could also feature wireless charging and magnetic accessories.

If you don’t find Apple’s AI extras useful, you can disable them.

It’s getting increasingly difficult to avoid AI when you open up your phone or laptop — as soon as I started this article in Google Docs, I was immediately offered some AI assistance to write it (which I didn’t take). And with the rollout of Apple Intelligence, that now applies to iPhones, iPads, and Macs, too.

But if you aren’t seeing much value in the Apple Intelligence features that have launched so far, you’re not alone: around three-quarters of iPhone owners can’t see what all the fuss is about, according to a recent survey. It’s also worth bearing in mind that these AI add-ons take up 7GB of local storage (and counting) on every device you want to use them on.

The good news is that Apple Intelligence is both opt-in and reasonably easy to disable, which isn’t something every company does with their AI tools (looking at you, Google and Microsoft). So if you find features like Writing Tools and mangled notification summaries superfluous to your needs, you can turn them off.

Assuming you’ve already turned it on, here’s how to turn off specific features of Apple Intelligence. And if you really don’t like it, here’s how to turn it off completely.

(The steps listed below were tested on an iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 18.2. You’ll find similar options available on iPadOS and macOS.)

The first time you turned this toggle switch on — assuming you did — iOS downloaded the necessary AI models for local processing to your phone.

If you want to disable Apple Intelligence and free up the space used by the local iOS models, you need to reset your iPhone and start again from scratch without enabling Apple Intelligence during setup. You can do this from Settings by choosing General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, Since this will, of course, wipe everything on your phone, ensure all your important data is safely backed up.

For now at least, you’ve got plenty of control when it comes to the Apple Intelligence features that are active.

Apple may have settled on iPhone 17 Air as the name for the rumored skinny iPhone that’s expected this fall, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in today’s Power On newsletter. He writes that the phone will be “a testing ground for future technologies,” including the tech that leads to the company’s first foldables.

The name wouldn’t be surprising — both the MacBook Air and iPad Air were the thinnest versions of their lines when they were released. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to carry that forward by being “about 2 millimeters thinner” than current iPhones, Gurman has written. Other recent rumors have put it between 5.5mm and 6.25mm thick, which is close to the M4 iPad Pro’s depth and less than the thinnest iPhone so far, the iPhone 6.

The thinness isn’t just a flex — realizing it will help Apple along toward future foldable iPads and iPhones, Gurman writes. And he says the phone could be one of Apple’s first proving grounds for its in-house cell modem, codenamed Sinope, after it debuts in the iPhone SE this spring. This year’s iPhone lineup is also expected to debut Apple-designed Wi-Fi / Bluetooth chips, though Gurman doesn’t go as far as saying that includes the 17 Air.

Past rumors have said the new 17 Air will get a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display — Apple’s 120Hz variable refresh rate screen used only on iPhone Pro models so far — and that it will have just a single 48-megapixel camera lens on the back, with a 24-megapixel selfie camera. It may have Apple’s A19 chip and, like the iPhone SE 4, is expected to pack 8GB of RAM to run Apple Intelligence AI features.

Apart from the new colors, the non-Ultra phones are almost indistinguishable from the S24 line. The latest Geekbench listing of the Galaxy S25 Slim might have put to rest all rumors about Samsung using Exynos processors in its upcoming S25 series. The much-anticipated Galaxy S25 Slim US variant was spotted on Geekbench listing with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. This also suggests that although the phone will be launched in limited quantity, it is highly likely to be sold in the US.

The Galaxy S25 Slim is spotted with model number SM-S937U, a model number associated with the model, which was also spotted in the GSMA IMEI database back in November last year. The "U" in the model number indicates the US variant of the phone. The Geekbench listing shows the 12GB model of the Galaxy S25 Slim achieving a single-core score of 3,005 and a multi-core score of 6,945.

The scores aren't particularly impressive and indicate that the SoC maybe a bit underclocked, possibly because it could be a pre-production unit. The scores are expected to get better in the final production variant, with proper software optimization.

It has been tipped that the Galaxy S25 Slim will feature a 200MP ISOCELL HP5 camera sensor, a 50MP ultrawide ISOCELL JN5, and a 50MP 3.5x telephoto ISOCELL JN5 sensor. To maintain the slim profile of the device, Samsung has reportedly incorporated the ALoP technology. As far as the thickness or better words, the slimness of the device is concerned, it is rumored that the Galaxy S25 Slim could be around 6.6mm thin, slightly thicker than the iPhone 17 Slim/Air, which is tipped to be around 6.25mm thin.

Under the hood, the phone is expected to run on One UI 7 based on Android 15, which is also what the Geekbench listing lists the device with. It could be juiced by a battery between 4,700mAh and 5,000mAh with Qi2 wireless charging support.

We are just a few weeks away from the Unpacked event slated for January 22, where Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S25 series. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy S25 Slim and the Galaxy Ring 2 might also make an appearance at the event. A lot has been leaked about the entire Galaxy S25 lineup. Recently, images of the alleged Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra in this year's signature color, blue, were leaked. Now, leaker Roland Quandt has shared a roundup of potential specs for the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Reportedly, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will feature a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. The display is tipped to offer 2,600 nits of peak brightness, debunking previous claims of 3,000 nits. If true, the Galaxy S25 Ultra would match the peak brightness of last year's Galaxy S24 Ultra. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro Max peaks out at 2,000 nits.

It was previously reported that this year's Ultra model will feature second-generation Corning Gorilla Armor Glass with advanced anti-reflective properties. The Galaxy S24 Ultra did offer an impressive anti-reflective display, and this year's model is expected to improve the experience further. As for the Gorilla Glass protection, famous YouTuber ZerryRigEverything demonstrated that in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, featuring the Gorilla Glass Armor protection, deeper grooves were more prominent at level 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, compared to level 7 on previous devices with Gorilla Glass.

So, the Galaxy S25 Ultra may offer slightly better protection against scratches and scuffs. Also, Samsung has already confirmed that the upcoming Galaxy S25 series will support the Qi2 wireless charging standard, which Quandt has reiterated. Furthermore, this year's Ultra could measure 162.8 x 77.6 x 8.2 mm and weigh 219 grams. It may be offered in 12/256GB, 16/512GB, and 16/1TB RAM storage variants. It has been rumored that this year's Galaxy S25 and S25+ models will start with 12GB RAM, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra will feature 16GB RAM from the mid-variant.

There is also a rumor that the upcoming Galaxy S25 series will run One UI 7 out of the box, instead of One UI 7.1. The flagships would continue to run One UI 7 for a couple of months before One UI 7.1 rolled out.

As the world ponders on the launch of the OnePlus 13, here we will be talking about another phone, that the company launched alongside its flagship phone. We are talking about the OnePlus 13R. And looking at the official spec sheet, it offers near-to-flagship-level features at a price just under $600 ($599.99 to be precise). For those seeking something bang-for-bucks, the OnePlus 13R might be worth considering.

The OnePlus 13R features a 6.78-inch 1.5K 120Hz ProXDR LTPO 4.1 display with "Aqua Touch" (spelled "Auqa Touch" on the official website). This technology allows smooth screen operation in the rain or while wearing gloves. Under the hood, it is powered by last year's efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB UFS 4.0 storage—an upgrade from UFS 3.1 found on the OnePlus 12R. Unfortunately, there isn't a 512GB storage option, although OnePlus fans in India will get an additional 16GB RAM and 512GB storage option.

The OnePlus 13R is juiced by a 6,000mAh battery that supports 55W SUPERVOOC fast charging. The phone comes with an IP65 rating and Corning Gorilla Glass GG7i protection for the display. Coming to the cameras, the OnePlus 13R features a triple camera module with a 50MP primary, 8MP ultrawide (112-degree FOV), and 50MP 2x telephoto, which is claimed to go up to 4x without sacrificing image quality. The primary camera is capable of shooting 4K@60fps with OIS. The telephoto camera doesn't feature optical image stabilization (OIS). For selfies, there is a 16MP shooter.

On the software side, the phone will boot OxygenOS 15 based on Android 15 out of the box, similar to its elder sibling, the OnePlus 13. It will receive four years of Android OS updates along with six years of security updates. OnePlus has packed a bunch of AI features including, Intelligent Search, Google Gemini, AI Detail Boost, AI Unblur, AI Reflection Eraser, and AI Notes. The phone features a flat design, with a flat display and flat back. OnePlus has used an aluminum frame for the phone and offers the OnePlus 13R in two colors: Nebula Noir and Astral Trail.

If interested, you can pre-order the OnePlus 13R from the official website for $599.99. OnePlus is also giving away a gift upon pre-ordering the phone. You can pick either a OnePlus Buds Pro 3 or the OnePlus Watch 2R (46mm) for free. As of writing this post, the smartwatch is out of stock.

In a recent development, design details of the rumored Samsung tri-folding phone have popped up online. Earlier it was reported that Samsung has begun working on its tri-folding phone with a potential launch date slated for 2025. Although, later an information by display analyst Ross Young, it was tipped that Samsung's tri-folding phone may not see the light of the day until 2026. However, the latest reports not only give us insights into the design of the phone but also suggest it could be unveiled alongside other foldables in the second half of this year.

According to the report, unlike the world's first tri-folding phone from Huawei, the Huawei Mate XT's S-shape folding design, Samsung has opted for a G-type folding design. This means that Samsung's tri-folding phone will fold inward twice. There are a few benefits to this design over Huawei's outward folding design. Notably, Samsung's approach is expected to be more durable and protect the display from external damage, since foldable displays are already very fragile.

When folded, Samsung's tri-folding phone will be fully enclosed, providing added protection to the display from impacts and scratches. Upon unfolding, the device will offer an impressive screen size and will act as a tablet experience. The initial production is likely to be limited, with fewer than 300,000 units expected, purportedly the same strategy Samsung is tipped to follow for its Galaxy S25 Slim model. Previously, it has also been reported that Samsung may add a first-of-its-kind folding battery inside its tri-folding phone.

It is also rumored that Samsung may forgo UDC (Under Display Camera) technology in its tri-folding phone due to concerns over the low quality of images. As per an industry insider, "the triple fold product will have three display panels, two internal and two external hinges, and related hardware technology will also be improved, so it will be much more expensive than existing foldable phones. Since it is an ultra-expensive product, the initial quantity will not be set that high considering demand."

As far as pricing is concerned, Samsung may keep the price steep, given the technology and additional components it involves. However, they may also want to keep the price in check, as Huawei's tri-folding phone launched at around $2,800 did not meet sales expectations, due to its high cost.

It's intentional, and eligible users can get cash or free battery replacements.

The Pixel 4a, a well-regarded release in Google's line of budget-minded phones with nice cameras and decent stock software, was not supposed to get any more updates. This week, it will receive a rather uncommon one—one that intends to lower its reported battery life.

The Pixel 4a, released in the summer of 2020, was discontinued at the end of 2022. It received its last official software update in the summer of 2023, followed by a surprise security update in November 2023. Throughout 2024, there were no updates. This week, owners of the 4a (and likely many former owners) are getting a new update, along with an email titled "Changes coming to your Pixel 4a."

The email addresses "an upcoming software update for your Pixel 4a that will affect the overall performance and stability of its battery." The automatic software update to Android 13 "introduces new battery management features to improve the stability of your device," which will "reduce your battery's runtime and charging performance."

Google goes into more detail on a support page about the "Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program," noting that only some "Impacted Devices" will see the reduced capacity and charging performance. Those with such devices (determined by a survey) have three options beyond just taking the hit: sending their phone in for a free battery replacement, receiving $50 (or the non-US equivalent) payment, or getting $100 toward a new Pixel phone from the Google Store. Those with impacted phones have one year from the scheduled software update on January 8, 2025, to choose an "appeasement option."

Google has skipped the details on why "available battery capacity and charging performance" are taking a hit and what makes a device "Impacted," stating only that the company has "determined that certain Pixel 4a phones" need to "improve the stability of their battery's performance." But there are some educated guesses to be made. Given that the batteries in most Pixel 4a phones are somewhere between two to five years old and some of them were likely kept in capacity-diminishing low states of charge, many are in rough shape.

Being in such rough shape, they may not provide all the power demanded by the phone, especially in notably cold or hot conditions. By constraining the battery levels at which the phone can operate, Google can prevent phones from dealing with inconsistent power that can result in unexpected behavior or shutdowns. It's akin to what happened with older iPhones being slowed down in late 2017, except Google is coming out in front of its software fix and compensating users for the change rather than waiting for it to play out in the courts.

Ars has contacted Google for comment and will update this post if we receive a response.

Currently, Samsung is busy with CES 2025, but let's not forget the company is anticipated to unveil the Galaxy S25 series, purportedly on January 22, at the Unpacked event. Leaks and rumors have already shed light on almost all the details about the upcoming Galaxy S25 lineup, leaving only the official announcement. However, thanks to a fresh leak, we now have a better look at the Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra in blue—the rumored signature color of the series.

The images show the Galaxy S25+ and the Galaxy S25 Ultra in blue color. Based on these images, the blue color does appear more vibrant than what it was rumored to look like. Notably, the blue color is tipped to be dubbed "Icy Blue" for the Galaxy S25 and S25+ models, while it will be called "Titanium Blue" for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Both colors look different from each other, as evident from the different names. Interestingly, the blue color of the Galaxy S25 Ultra closely resembles a previously leaked version.

Both the Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra are shown inside a transparent case, which is reportedly the Spigen Crystal Flex case. For both devices, everything matches what has already been leaked about the device. However, one of the highlighting features that the images reveal is a MagSafe-style ring on the back, suggesting the support for Qi2 wireless charging support on both Galaxy S25+ and S25 Ultra models. It is rumored that Samsung will finally integrate the Qi2 wireless charging standard across the Galaxy S25 lineup.

The Galaxy S25 series is expected to have the slimmest bezels in the market. Although the exact measurements remain unknown, it is just a matter of a few weeks before everything becomes official.

Chinese smartphone OEMs are popular for packing large batteries into their smartphones. In contrast, major players like Samsung and Apple typically opt for traditional battery capacities inside their phones. While Samsung's M-series and F-series include a few models with batteries as large as 7,000mAh, this trend doesn't extend to its flagship series. However, if the latest report is to be believed, then we may soon see bigger batteries inside Samsung and Apple smartphones.

It is tipped that Chinese smartphone manufacturers plan to launch more phones with bigger batteries as large as 7,000mAh to 8,000mAh starting next year. Reports suggest that Chinese OEMs aim to achieve this without adding bulk to their smartphones. In response, Samsung and Apple are ramping up their efforts, and are reportedly, developing new battery technologies to keep up with their Chinese rivals.

Samsung is said to be at the forefront and is directly involved in the development of advanced battery materials. The South Korean giant is working on improving anode and cathode materials to produce an entirely new battery composition, which would offer better performance and efficiency. One of the technologies includes significantly increasing the silicon content in the batteries. While higher silicon levels often lead to battery expansion, it is said that Samsung has found a solution to tackle these issues.

Apple is also entering the fray and is following a strategy similar to Samsung's. However, Apple may not make use of the rumored new battery tech until after 2026. It remains unclear if Samsung will use the advanced battery tech inside its flagship models or limit it to its mid-range and budget offerings.

In recent years, Apple has taken a simple but effective strategy for its smartphone lineup: Reserve the flashy features for the Pro models to make users pay more for them. While this strategy has worked for quite some time now, Android rivals are tightening their grip on the Pro iPhones with every new generation.

These days, even mid-range, affordable Android smartphones are stepping up their game with a 120Hz display. In contrast, the $799 standard iPhone 16 and $899 iPhone 16 Plus are still launching with a modest 60Hz display, which can be disappointing. However, there's hope for the next generation of iPhones, as Apple might be gearing up to boost the refresh rate.

The news comes on the heels of a report by Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, stating that the standard version of the iPhone 17 series is likely to have a high refresh rate. The tipster adds that the information is based on supply chain materials.

While the exact refresh rate of the standard iPhone 17 is yet to be discovered, Apple is less likely to opt for a 120Hz refresh rate. Instead, the standard models could get a 90Hz refresh rate, while the 120Hz grade is reserved for the Pro and Pro Max models. Digital Chat Station hasn't provided more context, so we should take these claims with a pinch of salt.

In the meantime, Apple reportedly has a Slim/Air version of the iPhone 17 in the pipeline, which is supposed to replace the Plus models in the iPhone lineup. The device is tipped to be 2nm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro and could also get a 90Hz display.

Before the iPhone 16 series launch, some sources reported that Apple wanted to hold forts with the latest iPhones while keeping its best innovations under the wraps for the iPhone 17 series. With mid-range Android smartphones boasting a 120Hz display, It's hard to imagine Apple being reckless enough to launch the iPhone 17 series with a 60Hz display.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra's anti-reflective coating was one of its standout features. Recently reports now suggest that the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra will take this to the next level with an even better display. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to launch on January 22, 2025, worldwide at the Unpacked event. Here, the company is also expected to tease the Galaxy S25 Slim and the Galaxy XR headset, codenamed "Project Moohan."

Reliable leaker IceUniverse suggests that the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra will come with a second-generation Corning Gorilla Armor anti-glare screen. Furthermore, the display is rumored to offer significantly improved anti-reflective properties than the one on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Samsung and Corning collaborated first for the Gorilla Armor for the Galaxy smartphones, with the first iteration debuting with this year's Galaxy S24 Ultra.

It is expected that this collaboration will expand next year with the Galaxy S25 Ultra featuring even better display protection and anti-reflective properties from Corning. Based on the information, the display on the Galaxy S25 Ultra may offer an elevated screen viewing experience. OnePlus is expected to launch its next foldable, the OnePlus Open 2, in China early next year. Following its Chinese launch, the foldable may arrive globally sometime in Q1 of 2025. However, ahead of its launch, we now have our first look at the alleged OnePlus Open 2. The renders, based on a late-stage production prototype, reveal some interesting information about the upcoming device.

The render shows off a circular camera module on the back of the device, which looks similar to its predecessor. It houses a triple-camera setup with the signature "Hasselblad" branding. It may come with a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP 3x telephoto lens. For selfies, the OnePlus Open 2 could feature 32MP and 20MP cameras. It is unclear, which one will be available as the cover display camera.

Reportedly, the OnePlus Open 2 measures under 10mm when folded and boasts an IPX8 rating—an upgrade from the OnePlus Open's IPX4 rating. The main display on the device is tipped to be an 8-inch 2K LTPO, which will be accompanied by a 6.4-inch AMOLED cover display. The OnePlus Open 2 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and could be paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.

Despite loud proclamations, AI on smartphones is still mostly a sideshow.

I’ve spent the past year covering every major phone launch in the US, and each one loudly declared the same thing: AI is here, and ours is the AI phone you’ve been waiting for. Each was followed by much applause and favorable stock price movement. But when I got those phones into my hands, the AI was underwhelming, to say the least.

The theory is that smartphones as we know them are evolving into something new: AI smartphones. An AI smartphone will be a new kind of device that doesn’t force you to interact with a grid of apps all day long; you’ll be able to ask it to order pizza or send an email just by using an AI-imbued voice assistant. You’ll be able to point your camera at a flyer for a show, have the AI check whether you’re free, and add it to your calendar. You’ll ask it about something a friend said to you — maybe in an email or a text, you’re not sure which — and it will go find the information for you.

Personally, all of the above sounds great to me. I’d love some help with the chores I carry out a hundred times a day on my phone — and with the firehose of incoming information and notifications I deal with. But AI smartphones are not here yet, not by a long shot, despite what you may have heard. Instead, what we have feels like a collection of loosely associated tech demos.

Right now, AI on your phone can help you write and rewrite an email to sound more professional or react to a text with a disco pigeon emoji. There’s AI to translate phone calls, which kind of works and is actually pretty neat. And there’s AI that can turn a nice picture of food into something horrifying. AI on our phones has offered one weird trick after another: sometimes funny, sometimes interesting, but hardly the platform shift we’ve been promised.

The (supposedly) AI smartphones of 2024

All of the major phone makers are at fault. Samsung opened the year with its Galaxy S24 launch in January, declaring “Galaxy AI is here” at a hockey arena-appropriate volume. To be sure, the devices it announced are good smartphones, and they run a blend of Samsung and Google’s Gemini Nano models on-device, but I wouldn’t call them AI smartphones.

Supposedly, they can help you take distractions out of your photos — but you might end up with something even more distracting instead. The live language interpreter feature for phone calls could come in handy for something like making a dinner reservation. But it also translated a statement from my colleague as “I am eating my chair.” (She was not.) Most users will find that these AI features fade into the background once the novelty wears off.

Later in 2024, fall hardware season arrived early with AI-ified Pixels. Google has made much of AI on its phones for the past couple of years, but the company’s Gemini AI is absolutely everywhere on the Pixel 9 series. There’s an AI-generated summary at the top of the weather app, a new app that saves and tags your screenshots using AI, a new AI-powered default assistant, and lots of AI image generation tools — from silly to seriously worrying.

Some of it does feel useful, particularly the screenshots app, which is the kind of thing you might find handy if you tend to keep infinite Chrome tabs open on your phone as bookmarks. But these features, siloed into their respective apps, don’t feel like they have much to do with each other. Gemini sort of connects the dots with extensions, but support for different apps is being added slowly — and even with an extension, Gemini can only do so much for you.

Apple Intelligence started shipping a month after the iPhone 16, but its blockbuster features won’t arrive until 2025.

Last but not least, we met the iPhones “built for Apple Intelligence” in September. I think it says a lot about the state of Apple’s AI that the iPhone 16 initially shipped without Apple Intelligence. AI features finally arrived in late October with iOS 18.1. And if anyone was waiting with bated breath, this first update was probably underwhelming.

Right now, Apple Intelligence includes summaries for notifications and emails, tools to alter the style of your writing, and a new glowing UI for Siri. Notification summaries can be useful, but usually they’re just funny. The writing tools are standard fare at this point, and Siri is basically the same old assistant with a new coat of paint. There’s more to come, but what’s here now certainly doesn’t add up to an AI smartphone.

 A messy year for AI

It’s not just phones; this is a messy moment for AI in general. Depending on who you ask, AI is either a massive bubble that’s about to burst or a few months away from evolving into digital God. AI is being foisted on us in every direction: surfacing in Google search results, lurking in every Meta product, greeting you by name in the Spotify app. It’s hard to separate the signal from the noise when it comes to AI, because the noise is everywhere and it’s so goddamn loud!

And there really might be a signal in there — especially when it comes to our phones. Siri really might become more useful, with an Apple Intelligence update this spring that will allow it to take action in apps through something known as App Intents. Developers will be able to surface certain actions — like ordering the pizza that AI proponents keep promising — so they’re accessible at the system level by Siri. Google seems to be preparing a similar framework in Android 16, which could help bridge the gap between Gemini and individual apps without the apps needing an entire extension. And who knows? Maybe Bixby will get in the game, too.

The trouble is, after a full year of supposedly game-changing AI on our mobile devices that amounted to nothing, it’s starting to sound like the phone makers are crying wolf. The real AI smartphones need to stand up pretty soon — before our collective patience starts to run out.

It's been a while since Apple released the latest software upgrade for supported iPhone models. However, the Cupertino giant is still not done adding new features to iOS 18 through consecutive point updates.

Apple recently released iOS 18.2, which brings several Apple Intelligence features such as Genmoji, Image Playground, and ChatGPT integration, enabling Siri to call its more capable AI friend when things go out of hand.

Overall, iOS 18 is a fairly big update from Apple that brings major design changes to several areas. For instance, the completely redesigned Control Center and customization options for the home screen. That said, some iOS 18 features might go unnoticed in the limelight of Apple Intelligence but could be handy at times. Here is a list of such small and useful features on iOS 18 you can't miss.

Note: These features are not arranged in any order of preference.

	1. Hide app names, make icons bigger

iOS 18 lets you change the home screen look by hiding the app names below their icons. As a result, the home screen icons become a little bigger and easier to recognize.

To hide app names on the home screen, tap and hold in the empty space until the icons start shaking > Tap on Edit in the top-left corner > Customize. Now, tap the "Large" option to make the icons bigger and remove the app name.

You can read our detailed guide on how to customize the home screen on iOS 18.

	2. Lock and hide apps

Speaking of hiding things, you can also hide apps from the home screen, App Library, and the Settings app. You can even lock the apps you want so no one can use them behind your back, even if they can access your device in an unlocked state.

You can lock and hide an app from the home screen and the App Library. Just tap and hold its icon > tap "Require Face ID." Read our guide for detailed steps to lock and hide your iPhone apps.

	3. Find recently deleted reminders

If you use the iPhone Reminders app regularly, you can find your recently deleted reminders in a separate section. This helps in cases where you accidentally deleted a reminder or want to revisit something you removed in the past.

You can go to the "Recently Deleted" section under My Lists to see all the reminders you have deleted. You can tap on a recently deleted reminder to recover and edit it. The recovered reminder will move to the default list where it was initially saved.

	4. Know if someone AirDropped your photos and videos

The Photos app on iOS 18 now has options that help you figure out if someone AirDropped photos and videos from your device. The Utilities collection includes albums called "Recently Viewed" and "Recently Shared," where you can find the images and videos that were opened and shared by someone.

	5. Delete very large video files

If you have thousands of photos and videos in your Photos library, there is a high chance that you might have several storage-consuming videos that you barely revisit. The Settings app on iOS 18 now lets you find such lengthy videos eating up your paid iCloud storage and delete them. We have created a detailed guide explaining how you can remove such videos.

	6. Continue playing music while taking photos and videos

If your iPhone is connected to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones, music will continue to play when you click pictures or record videos. This small but useful iOS 18 feature might be helpful at times, for instance, if you're the DJ at your home party and want to record the fun as well.

	7. Share Wi-Fi passwords with Android users

Password sharing has been a feature on iPhones for a while, but it was limited to Apple devices only. iOS 18 makes another hole in Apple's walled garden by allowing users to share Wi-Fi passwords with Android users.

The new Passwords app in iOS 18 lets you share Wi-Fi passwords as QR codes. Android owners and other non-Apple users can scan the QR code to join the Wi-Fi network.

	8. Search your call logs

One of the pain points of being an iPhone user was you couldn't search phone numbers in your call log. So, if you were to find who called you four days ago, it would be a tough game. The iOS 18 update brings a new search bar to the call log user interface, which you can find at the top of the screen. It appears in both the "All" and "Missed" tabs.

	9. Schedule messages to send them later

Imagine you remembered your friend's birthday throughout the year but forgot it on the last day. Because you were too tired before midnight and dozed off. The Messages app now has the ability to schedule texts for a specific time so that such blunders rarely happen.

When composing a new message, tap on the "+" button, then select the "Send Later" option in the list. Next, you can schedule the date and time to send the message automatically.

	10. New "Apps" page in the Settings app

The Settings app on iPhone used to offer a single scrollable UI where you need to dive into the clutter of apps and system settings. The iOS 18 update puts all the iPhone apps into one page called "Apps" (at the bottom of the Settings app) to reduce the clutter and make them easier to find. Of course, Apple isn't the first mover here, and Android has offered this comfort for years.

	11. Easily manage your dual SIM setup

If you use multiple SIM cards on your iPhone, the Control Center now lets you manage them easily and switch between SIM cards like personal or business. Open the Control Centre > go to the Networks section > Press and hold Mobile data to get SIM card options. It would have been even better if Apple had added these options as buttons to the main UI of the Control Center.

	12. Change lock screen controls

The wave of customization has also passed through the lock screen on iOS. Now, you can customize the two toggle buttons previously limited to Torch and Camera. You can replace them with multiple options present in the Controls gallery or remove them entirely for a minimalist look.

To swap the lock screen toggle buttons, tap and hold the lock screen until different options appear. Tap on Customize > Customize Current Wallpaper > tap on the desired control button once to remove it. You can tap that control button again to open the Controls gallery and choose your new option.

It is not just system apps; the Controls gallery also features options from third-party apps. For instance, you can pin Instagram or Snapchat directly to your lock screen.

	13. Third-party apps in the Control Center

Apple revamped the Control Center entirely and now includes support for third-party apps. Following an update pushed by the automaker earlier this year, you can press a button in the Control Center to unlock your Tesla car, open its hood, or open the charging port.

If an app supports iOS 18 Control Center, you can find the options it offers by going to the Control Center gallery. To do so, tap on the "+" button in the top-left corner of the Control Center, then tap "Add a control" at the bottom.

	14. Math Notes

The Notes app on iOS 18 now gives you one less reason to open the Calculator. It offers the Math Notes feature that solves math equations automatically. For instance, when you include the "+" operator between two numbers and type "=" after them, the Notes app will display the total automatically.

It supports simple stuff such as addition, subtraction, and division but can also handle complex things like equations, graphs, and variables.

	15. Hide screenshots, wallpaper suggestions, and Clean Up photos

The redesigned Photos app on iOS 18 offers several useful features. You can hide the screenshots from the main library to reduce clutter when scrolling through your pictures and videos. Tap the Sort button (double-arrow button) in the bottom left corner > View Options > select "Screenshots" from the list.

If you want to give your device a makeover, the Photos app can also suggest wallpapers. To do so, open the Photos app and scroll down to the section called "Wallpaper Suggestions."

Another thing you can do with the Photos app is remove unwanted objects from images using the Clean Up feature. The tool uses AI to get rid of distracting objects from your photos. However, it's a part of the Apple Intelligence suite and available on iPhone 15 Pro and later models. You can find the Clean Up option at the bottom of the screen while editing a image.

	16. InSight in Apple TV app

Among various updates, the Apple TV app now includes InSight. When watching movies and TV shows on Apple TV+, it displays real-time information about the actors, characters, and music currently playing on the screen. The feature is similar to the X-Ray feature on Amazon Prime Video.

	17. Safari Distraction Control

Our web browsing experience typically isn't complete without unwanted elements popping up out of nowhere. Safari tries to address this problem with a feature called Distraction Control. It lets you hide the elements you find distracting on a web page. You can quickly revert the changes whenever you want.

Go to the web page you want and tap on the page menu button present on the left side of the address bar. Next, tap on the "Hide Distracting Items" option.

	18. Erase external drive

The Files app lets you erase an external drive connected to your iPhone. You can tap and hold the drive in the app and press "Erase" to get the job done. You can also format external drives to APFS, exFAT or MS-DOS (Fat32) file formats on your iPhone.

	19. Vehicle Motion Cues

Vehicle Motion Cues is a new feature designed to help people inside moving vehicles. The feature claims to reduce motion sickness when using your iPhone in a moving car. It displays small moving dots on the screen, which change their speed and direction according to the movement of your vehicle. You can read our detailed guide to set up Vehicle Motion Cues.

	20. Eye Tracking

Users who have trouble using iPhones with their hands can use the eye-tracking capabilities built into iOS 18. It relies on the Face ID camera hardware to track your eye movement and operate the device without touching it. Here's how to set up and use eye tracking on iOS 18.

	21. Mirror iPhone on a Mac

iOS 18 lets you control your iPhone from a Mac by mirroring its screen wirelessly. You can interact with your iPhone apps from the big screen, get notifications, and even move images and documents across devices.

You need macOS 15 installed on your Mac to support the feature and the same Apple ID on both devices. Go to the launchpad on your Mac >, open the iPhone Mirroring app, and follow the steps. Note that the screen mirroring will pause when you use your device and resume when you lock it.

	22. Control Contacts access for apps

A new privacy feature baked into iOS 18 lets you choose which contacts to share on a per-app basis. Go to the Settings app > Privacy & Security > Contacts. Here, you can decide whether a particular app should access only ten contacts while another app can access all of them.

	23. Automatic language detection

The multilingual keyboard on iOS 18 can remember what languages you use across different conversations in messages and switch languages automatically. For instance, if you are talking to one friend in English and another in Hindi, the keyboard can save some taps for you.

	24. Dark mode for icons

Some people have a special place in their hearts for the dark mode. iPhone has had a system-wide dark mode for years, but iOS 18 has brought home screen icons to the dark side. You can customize these icons to go dark or add a color tint in the shade you want.

Apple has also updated the home screen to allow more flexible icon placement. You can place the icons anywhere on the screen, and they will not move to the top like they did in the past.

	25. More content types in Utilities

The Utilities collection in the Photos app now filters images and videos into more content types. You can find specific albums for images containing documents, receipts, handwriting, illustrations, and QR codes.

These are some useful features you can find in the iOS 18 update. Of course, more can be added to this list. If you think we missed something, drop your thoughts in the comments.

Apple has stopped signing iOS 18.1.1. This means that users who are currently on iOS 18.2 won't be able to downgrade to the earlier version.

Apple routinely stops signing older versions of iOS after a new update is released. This practice is intended to encourage users to stay up-to-date with the latest security patches and features. Security vulnerabilities are frequently patched in newer iOS updates, and by stopping the signing of older versions, Apple effectively pushes users to update their devices to benefit from these critical security improvements.

For users, the message is clear: update to iOS 18.2 to benefit from the latest security patches and features. Updating to the newest version of iOS is an effective way to ensure your device is protected against potential security threats.

However, the decision to block downgrades can be a double-edged sword. Some users, particularly those who encounter compatibility issues with specific apps on newer versions, may find themselves stuck with a less-than-ideal iOS version.

While downgrade to iOS 18.1.1 is no longer allowed, iOS 17 will continue to receive security updates. Furthermore, users who are currently enrolled in the iOS 18.3 beta program still have the option to downgrade to iOS 18.2. This allows beta testers to revert to a stable version if they encounter any issues or prefer to wait for the official release of iOS 18.3.

Ultimately, Apple's decision to stop signing iOS 18.1.1 is a security-focused move that is likely to benefit the majority of users. While some users may be disappointed, the improved security of the iOS ecosystem is a worthwhile trade-off.

It appears that Apple may be close to getting the iPhone 16 sales ban lifted in Indonesia after securing approval from President Prabowo Subianto for a $1 billion investment plan in the country. Last month, the Indonesian government imposed a ban on iPhone 16 sales in the country, accusing Apple of not meeting the promised investment targets. To get the ban lifted, Apple initially proposed an investment plan of $10 million, but it was rejected.

Later, the company made an unsuccessful offer to invest $100 million to lift the iPhone 16 sales ban. However, it appears that the $1 billion investment plan has done the trick, and people close to the matter claim that the government has accepted the investment. Reportedly, President Prabowo reviewed and approved Apple's investment plan during a recent meeting, encouraging his cabinet to attract further investment from global companies.

A key part of Apple's $1 billion investment includes setting up a manufacturing plant on the island of Batam. The factory will focus on producing AirTags, which is a tracking device used for tracking items such as luggage, keys, etc. The Batam plant is expected to create 1,000 jobs initially and eventually be responsible for 20% of the global AirTag production. Apple chose Batam as it offers free-trade zone benefits, which include exemption from value-added taxes, luxury taxes, and import duties.

Additionally, Apple plans to build another factory in Bandung, near Jakarta, to produce various accessories. The $1 billion investment will also fund Apple academies across the country, providing students with skills such as coding to support Indonesia's tech industry. The move also indicates Apple's commitment to expand its presence in Southeast Asia while meeting Indonesian regulations.

Leaks in the tech world are as common as rain in the tropics. Employees, insiders, and even contractors risk their jobs to spill the beans on upcoming gadgets. But sometimes, these leaks backfire spectacularly. Take the case of the Samsung Galaxy S25+ prototype that recently surfaced online.

A photo surfaced showing what appeared to be a working Galaxy S25+ prototype. The leaker, perhaps too eager to share, forgot to blur out the serial number at the bottom of the phone. This oversight was quickly spotted by eagle-eyed netizens. The serial number "CE092439139P4DF34E7ECE092" was clearly visible, making it a straightforward task for Samsung to trace the leak back to its source.

Max Jambor, a tech insider, took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that the leaker had been fired.

According to @chunvn8888, the individual is now pleading with Chinese internet users to delete the leaked images, warning that their company might take legal action.

This isn't the first time someone’s been let go over a leak. Apple has taken legal action against former employees for leaking confidential information. In March 2024, Apple sued former iOS engineer Andrew Aude, accusing him of leaking sensitive information to the press.

The lawsuit alleged that Aude used his company-issued iPhone to exchange thousands of messages with reporters over a five-year span, leaking details about unannounced apps, hardware characteristics, and research efforts in the spatial computing space. Apple claimed that Aude deleted evidence during a meeting, including the encrypted messaging app Signal, and was subsequently fired on December 15, 2023.

While all the leak drama's going down, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series is also getting attention for some other reasons. We’ve heard that the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in 2025 will showcase four S25 models: the standard S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, and the new S25 Slim, which is allegedly being made in limited quantities.

It was a bit of a weird year for Apple’s subscription gaming service. 2024 saw very few notable exclusives launch on Apple Arcade; instead, the service was fleshed out with a number of big games that you can already play on other platforms. It hasn’t been great for showcasing what makes Apple Arcade unique, but on the other hand, it’s hard to complain too much when it means your subscription now includes Balatro and Vampire Survivors. It’s sort of like a solo version of poker, only with the gameplay loop of a roguelike, which means that you’ll be collecting rare joker cards to augment your hands as you create a deck capable of turning out absolutely absurd scores. It takes a moment for it to click, but Balatro is particularly well suited to mobile, where you can squeeze in a few quick rounds wherever you are… or accidentally let a few hours go by while you try to complete a run.

Dicey Dungeons is a few years old at this point — it originally launched on PC in 2019 — but if you missed this excellent release from Terry Cavanagh, now is a great time to jump in. Just like Balatro, it uses a roguelike structure, where your progress resets after every death, but every run is different. Here, the goal is to explore dungeons by fighting monsters and collecting loot, which is all done through an engrossing deckbuilding mechanic. Also, for some reason, you play as a die. If nothing else, it’s a great entry point to an intimidating genre.

Apple Arcade is slowly becoming a pretty good place for roleplaying games, and now that includes the Final Fantasy series. First up is the 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV, one of the most beloved entries in the long-running series, along with its direct sequel, The After Years. Square Enix has done a pretty solid job of porting RPGs of late, so the mobile versions are well suited for your phone. Even better: the original Final Fantasy is coming to Apple Arcade in January, in all its pixelated glory.

Retro Bowl (and its soccer sibling Retro Goal) is a very straightforward experience. It’s designed to bring the joyous simplicity of old-school sports games to modern smartphones. That means pixel art graphics, streamlined gameplay, and no fussing about with always-online features. The latest edition is no different, except that it has an NFL license, so you can enjoy that classic experience while controlling real football teams composed of real football players. The developers at New Star Games have also done a great job of keeping it updated since it launched in September.

Perhaps the biggest Apple Arcade exclusive this year, this sequel is the follow-up to one of the most chill and beautiful city builders around. The new version of Outlanders has more detailed visuals, an evolving story campaign, and regular challenges for when you just need a quick fix. The sequel also brings the series to Macs, in addition to iOS and Apple TV.

It was a long wait for a proper Monkey Island sequel, but it was worth it. The point-and-click adventure sees original creative duo Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman return, and while it has a very different visual style, the game itself is classic Monkey Island. Which is to say, it’s hilarious and full of all kinds of oddball puzzles to solve. This time, the game has also been streamlined to get rid of some of the more annoying aspects of the genre, with features like a hint system to keep you from getting really stuck.

The survival game starts out slowly, as you attempt to kill as many undead creatures before they overwhelm you. But over time, you’ll unlock new characters and abilities, allowing you to take on ridiculously large groups of enemies. This cycle continues for a long time, with a huge number of things to unlock to progress through the many, many levels.

Recently, some live images of the alleged Galaxy S25+ emerged online. The images showcased the device from the front, back, and one of the sides, with a design similar to previous models. Now, some renders of the Galaxy S25 Ultra along with the Galaxy S25+ have emerged online, courtesy of reliable leaker Evan Blass on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The images highlight the front of both devices. There's nothing much new to observe from the new renders, as they corroborate all the previous design rumors we've heard so far.

The Galaxy S25+ strikes a similar design as the Galaxy S24+ and has slimmer bezels all around. The main change can be seen in the images for Galaxy S25 Ultra. The corners are round, the bezels appear to have been trimmed even more than this year's model, and the device sports a flat display. We have already seen this design in a hands-on video of the alleged Galaxy S25 Ultra, which was leaked last month. Although the device isn't shown from the back, it is expected to feature upgraded cameras within the same module with Galaxy Z Fold6-like camera rings.

In another interesting development, tipster Max Jambor reported that a Samsung staff member who recently leaked live images of the Galaxy S25+ has been fired. Although the source of this information remains unclear, it appears that the employee responsible for the leak is no longer with the company.
