	Some automakers are eagerly lining up to adopt Apple’s next-gen phone mirroring system. But others say they aren’t in any rush.
</h3>

<p>
	Apple’s next-generation CarPlay is splitting the auto world down the middle. Several automakers are eagerly lining up to adopt the newly immersive CarPlay Ultra, which takes over more screens and includes embedded vehicle features like speedometers, heating and cooling, and radio functions. Others are flatly refusing to allow it, while the rest are taking a wait-and-see approach.

And unsurprisingly <a href="/2024/4/29/24144356/mercedes-benz-ceo-apple-carplay-next-gen-decoder" rel="">many are still wary of handing over too much real estate to the tech giant</a>.

	We’re still missing some big ones, like Volkswagen and Toyota, two of the biggest automakers in the world. I’ve reached out to both and will update this post if I hear back.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	CarPlay Ultra is a huge challenge for the auto industry. Multiple surveys show that customers love it, frequently use it over their car’s embedded systems, and would be less likely to buy a future vehicle that didn’t allow CarPlay. But automakers are <a href="/ford-motor-company/661205/ford-doug-field-interview-software-zonal-domain-fnv4" rel="">spending huge sums of money</a> on developing next-generation software systems that allow over-the-air updates and address their customers’ appetite for more digital services. And they’re reluctant to just let Apple slap their own software on top of that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Sources tell the <em>Financial Times</em> that automakers are eager to set clear standards about data sharing with Apple before agreeing to allow CarPlay Ultra.

	Google is rolling out a small but useful update to Chrome. The update makes the address bar in the web browser more customizable and accessible. You can now place it at the top or bottom of the screen, as you prefer.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The ability to change the position of the address bar in Google Chrome has started rolling out and will be available to all users over the coming weeks. You can long-press on the address bar and select the "Move address bar to bottom" option. Alternatively, you can also go to Settings &gt; Address bar to customize it.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Google Chrome for Android Address Bar" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1750794549_google_chrome_android_bottom_address_bar.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	"Depending on the size of your hand and your device, one address bar position may feel more comfortable than the other," the company said in a <a automate_uuid="ce5cefe5-8f70-4768-a46a-6af0a6902fb7" href="https://blog.google/products/chrome/address-bar-position-change/" rel="external nofollow">blog post</a>. "We designed this update to give you the flexibility to choose your preferred location — so you can browse with more ease."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The address bar is where you can type website names you want to visit. It's a crucial part of our browsing experience and also doubles as the search bar in Google Chrome. The browser's Android version has been around since 2012, and the address bar's top position has remained the default for most of its time.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Over the years, Google has enhanced the address bar with additional features, such as the ability to automatically hide when scrolling up on a web page, thereby offering more screen real estate.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A bottom-mounted address bar could be a better option for users with small hands or those who prefer to use their device with one hand. Interestingly, this is not the first time Chrome has had a bottom address bar, as Google briefly experimented with the feature in the past.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The bottom address bar even made its way to Chrome for iOS, where you can long-press the address bar to toggle between the two options or change it in the settings. It's hard to digest that it took Google so long to add a simple feature.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The defunct Windows Phone had this feature as far back as 2012, and Chrome's rival <a automate_uuid="7e76aaa8-e0e8-4b19-a498-4112a5453865" href="https://www.neowin.net/guides/here-are-some-of-the-ways-you-can-use-safaris-new-look-on-apple-ios-26/" rel="external nofollow">Safari added</a> a Bottom layout option in 2021. Nonetheless, the latest update brings Chrome in line with other browsers that offer a bottom address bar on Android.

	Google Chrome is the most used browser right now, with the competition trailing far behind. What browser you use typically ends up being a matter of preference and familiarity, but all vendors are trying to one-up each other as they vy for more market share. <a automate_uuid="2ab43487-eb86-46c7-ad2a-9f52dfcfdcca" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/chrome-is-now-faster-than-ever-and-google-explains-how-it-did-it/" rel="external nofollow">Recently, Google claimed that Chrome is now faster than ever</a> while Microsoft boasted that <a automate_uuid="2067aafe-c123-4749-a62c-fcbea79fe97b" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-edge-performs-better-than-google-chrome-on-windows-in-ad-blocking-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">Edge is better at ad-blocking than Google's offering</a>. Regardless of all these factors, Chrome commands a significant market share, even on legacy systems. Now, Google has announced that it is ending support for Chrome on two legacy versions of Android.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In a <a automate_uuid="449d425a-86ee-4053-a385-b18bebd1455c" href="https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/352616098?hl=en" rel="external nofollow">brief blog post</a>, Google has announced that it is dropping support for Chrome on Android 8 Oreo and Android 9 Pie with the upcoming version 139 of the browser expected to release on August 5. Right now, the current stable version of Chrome is 137, which means that Chrome 138 will be the last version of the browser to support these legacy operating systems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In practice, this means that Chrome will require Android 10.0 or above on mobile platforms in order to receive further updates. While the browser will continue working on older versions of Android, they will not receive updates, which means that they'll be left insecure and vulnerable to cybersecurity threats.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As expected, Google has recommended that users on older systems should migrate to at least Android 10 in order to continue receiving updates on Chrome. While the company hasn't explicitly stated a reason behind its decision, it likely has to do with the dwindling user base of these old versions of Android and Google's ambitions to get more people to upgrade to newer versions of its mobile operating system.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's important to note that Android 8 was released in August 2017 and received its final security patch in October 2021. Meanwhile, Android 9 was rolled out to the public in August 2019 and netted its final update in January 2022. So in retrospect, Google has already been offering Chrome support for these legacy versions long after they hit end-of-support themselves.

	iPhone's latest software update brings a ton of new features this year and is currently available in beta on <a automate_uuid="35320d9c-873c-4a9c-9d5d-8311022d8f72" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/heres-what-iphone-models-support-ios-26/" rel="external nofollow">supported</a> iPhone models. Its fresh coat of the <a automate_uuid="143a6864-023d-473f-b828-c59bf9ff87be" href="http://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-reduce-the-annoying-liquid-glass-effects-on-ios-26/" rel="external nofollow">controversial Liquid Glass</a> is also coming to the Safari web browser, alongside <a automate_uuid="a51cf0f2-65d4-4e06-9f61-1e52c6607f87" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/download-apple-macos-26-tahoe-ios-26-official-stock-wallpapers-in-high-quality/" rel="external nofollow">new iPhone wallpapers</a> and a <a automate_uuid="808e9c8e-416a-4e93-aacd-193d351ef4aa" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ios-26-photos-app-whats-good-and-whats-bad-in-the-latest-update/" rel="external nofollow">revamped Photos app</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In this article, let's talk about the new way you can customize the Safari browser on your iPhone. A major highlight among new Safari features <a automate_uuid="36de2907-63f4-448e-8523-b7fc3a826258" href="http://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-ios-26-with-windows-vista-like-liquid-glass-redesign/" rel="external nofollow">for iOS 26</a> is the new Compact mode for the Tab Bar. It serves as the default layout on the new iPhone update, available alongside the two other layouts from previous years.
</p>

<h3>
	Use the new Compact Tab Bar layout in Safari
</h3>

<p>
	You can follow these steps to customize Tab Bar layouts in Safari:
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="iOS 26 Safari Tab layouts" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1750068204_ios_26_safari_tab_view_layouts.webp">
</figure>

<ol>
	<li>
		Go to the Settings app on iOS 26.
	</li>
	<li>
		Open the Apps section from the bottom of the screen and scroll down or search to find Safari.
	</li>
	<li>
		You will find the three layout options under the Tabs section: Compact, Bottom, and Top.
	</li>
	<li>
		Tap on Compact to make it default, if it's not already selected.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Each Safari layout offers its own set of perks and downsides. The new Compact Mode on Safari does what its name says. Its translucent interface uses much less screen real estate compared to the Bottom and Top layouts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="iOS 26 Safari Compact Layout" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1750071720_ios_26_safari_compact_layout.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	You can find the Back button on the left side of the pill-shaped address bar that doubles up as a search bar. Next to it is a three-dot menu button to access features such as Share, All Tabs, Bookmarks, New Tab, and more.
</p>

<h3>
	Use Bottom and Top layouts for quicker access to Safari options
</h3>

<p>
	Bottom and Top layouts are almost the same, except that the latter places the address bar at the top of the screen. While the Top layout might be inconvenient when using an iPhone with one hand, some users may prefer to have their address bar in this position, perhaps for a more symmetrical view. After all, it's original and the only Safari layout available <a automate_uuid="ddc031b5-89d2-4666-b6ba-4afcd1dca610" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-ios-15-with-notification-improvements-new-facetime-features-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">until iOS 15</a>.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="iOS 26 Safari Tab Layouts" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1750071591_ios_26_safari_tab_layouts.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	Apple has given the Liquid Design treatment to both the Bottom and Top layouts, featuring a translucent, floating Tab Bar interface that offers a sneak peek of what's behind. Alongside the options for Bookmarks, Share, and All Tabs, you can find the Forward button to go to the next page in the browser. This is not the case with the Compact mode, but iOS already lets you swipe from the right edge of the screen to go forward.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="iOS 26 Safari All Tabs page" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1750072522_ios_26_safari_all_tabs_page.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	It appears that Apple has made it difficult to use Safari with one hand. It has shifted the New Tab and Tab Groups menu buttons to the top-left corner of the All Tabs page on iOS 26. This is where the Compact mode stands out, as these options are easily accessible. Alternatively, when on the All Tabs page, you can press the tabs pill at the bottom of the screen to access the Tab Groups menu.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One thing you'll notice is that the Compact and Bottom tab layouts shrink into a small pill when you scroll down a web page. The pill is translucent, like the Tab Bar, and changes colors according to its background, providing more screen real estate on your iPhone. However, in the Top layout, the address bar collapses into a pill at the top of the screen. You can scroll up on the screen or tap the pill to get back to the whole UI.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="iOS 26 Safari Compact layout collpase" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1750073058_ios_26_safari_compact_layout_2.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	Apart from that, the Safari 26 beta version for iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 brings several under-the-hood features to the table. For instance, Apple has added Screen Time support to WKWebView, which powers the browsing experience for in-app browsers. Safari users on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS can also report issues when they have trouble with a web page, accessible via the Page menu on the left of the address bar in all three layouts.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new Safari features and changes are currently being tested through the Apple Developer Program. These features are expected to be available to the public when Apple releases the iOS 26 update later this year. We'll continue to update this article as more beta releases arrive.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you plan to install iOS 26 developer beta, keep in mind that these releases can be unstable, and make sure to back up your data beforehand.

	We are just a few days away from the official launch of Samsung's premium foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7. The second Unpacked event is expected to <a automate_uuid="60b9c8b6-174e-48ea-a67a-ff25d12689fd" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-could-unpack-galaxy-z-flip7-and-z-fold7-in-new-york-this-year/" rel="external nofollow">take place in New York</a>, marking Samsung's return to the city after two years.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Samsung has already shared two teasers with the Galaxy Z Fold7 in focus, suggesting that this year's Galaxy Z Fold7 will be <a automate_uuid="c6fafa32-cc1d-4915-8f92-22b3a750414a" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7-vs-z-fold-6-size-comparison-reveals-subtle-but-key-differences/" rel="external nofollow">taller and wider</a> compared to last year's Galaxy Z Fold6. The teaser also highlights the thinness of the upcoming Z Fold7, claiming that it will be the <a automate_uuid="e8149bd6-3fea-442f-876e-0465b2618cf3" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/galaxy-z-fold7-to-be-the-thinnest-and-lightest-foldable-from-samsung/" rel="external nofollow">thinnest and lightest foldable</a> from Samsung ever.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Samsung's claims appear to be true, as, way ahead of its official unveiling, a Korean YouTuber, <a automate_uuid="c007fe24-54ad-4a53-9cae-3d36e258766b" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFcetSB8Sf8" rel="external nofollow">TheSINZA</a>, has shared a video comparing the supposed Galaxy Z Fold7 with the standard Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition, which launched in China and Korea.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The dummy unit of the Galaxy Z Fold7, when compared with last year's foldables, reveals just how thin and lightweight the upcoming foldable could be. The video suggests that the Z Fold7 will weigh 215 grams, much lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition, which weighed 236 grams.

	When the Galaxy Z Fold7 dummy unit is put side-by-side against the Z Fold6 Special Edition, it appears to be noticeably thinner, measuring 9mm compared to the 10.6 mm thickness of the Galaxy Z Fold6 SE. From the front, the Galaxy Z Fold7 looks similar to the Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition, but different than the Galaxy Z Fold6.

	Though the volume rockers and power buttons appear thin in the Galaxy Z Fold7 dummy unit, they are located in the same place as previous foldables. The dummy unit is also compared with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and in terms of thickness, it is almost identical. This would mean that the foldable won't feel different compared to Samsung's premium slab phone.

The handset is 5.8mm thick and weighs 163g, hosts a 200MP primary lens and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy processor - <a automate_uuid="187e4719-8c1c-4cc3-890d-41aa6cb10774" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-galaxy-s25-edge-vs-galaxy-s25-slim-design-vs-better-battery/" rel="external nofollow">the same one powering the S25 series</a>. However, despite all of these features backed by Samsung's marketing effort, it seems like the handset isn't performing well in terms of sales.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A report from South Korean outlet <a automate_uuid="9f4f0b2d-4ceb-49f8-8896-b90afd39bbab" href="https://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=5317" rel="external nofollow">The Elec</a> claims that the S25 Edge is is selling fewer units than what Samsung expected. This has resulted in Samsung lowering the number of units it plans to produce in June. It is important to keep in mind that it has been a little over a month since the S25 Edge came out, and since handsets are expected to sell well a few months within their launch date, this isn't a particularly promising sign.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	An earlier rumor had claimed that Samsung will be increasing the production of its foldable units and will phase out the upcoming S26 Plus in favor of the S26 Edge. However, the latest news out of South Korea might make Samsung rethink its strategy.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The latest report hasn't shed light on why the S25 Edge is underperforming in sales. This could be due to the prohibitive price tag of $1,100 (keep in mind that the S25+ costs $1,000), but this is just speculation at this point due to lack of official evidence. Those interested in still getting their hands on the S25 Edge can <a automate_uuid="cb52b3cd-1e76-4982-9854-61fd63d20a66" href="https://www.neowin.net/deals/stylish-samsung-galaxy-s25-edge-gets-20-discount-sending-it-to-lowest-price/" rel="external nofollow">grab the top-of-the-line 512GB model at a 20% discount right now</a>. This brings the price down from $1219.99 to just $969.99. Perhaps this significant discount so early after launch is also an indicator about the poor sales performance of the handset.

	You've probably been hearing rumors about Apple foldables for a while now, and in fact, this is perhaps the umpteenth article you've read about the topic. Still, new information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, claims that production of the first foldable iPhone could finally kick off later this year, pointing toward a launch in 2026. This news centers on a major component order, with Samsung being the exclusive supplier for the initial run, which neatly corroborates <a automate_uuid="3dd237f6-93bd-442d-bc7c-1e3380444a06" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apples-foldable-iphone-to-feature-a-display-that-has-never-been-used-in-a-foldable-device/" rel="external nofollow">previous supply chain reports</a> we have seen over the years.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple and Samsung are supposedly working together to solve the one thing that has bugged people since foldables became a thing: the crease. Samsung has improved its panels over time, but Apple is reportedly pushing to have it nearly invisible before any phone ships to customers. This obsession with getting the hardware perfect feels very on-brand.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	After all, this is the company that is usually late to the party with new product categories, perfecting its take on devices like iPhones, iPads, the Apple Watch, and also <s><del>AI</del></s>. Okay, that last one <a automate_uuid="c4b0e839-af64-4837-a88d-42d58fe20083" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-worries-that-its-ai-shortcomings-could-be-exposed-at-the-wwdc-2025/" rel="external nofollow">isn't going smoothly</a> for <a automate_uuid="5e4342bc-ba51-4bde-b7d7-1dc936fdf0dc" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apples-ai-models-still-trail-behind-openais-gpt-4o-despite-latest-update/" rel="external nofollow">the company</a>, but its track record with hardware is generally a different story.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And the evidence for that hardware push is now getting much more specific. The new <a automate_uuid="8a9679e8-8051-451e-a6cb-99729a7b4b91" href="https://biz.chosun.com/en/en-it/2025/06/19/X5AEPFAR4VCCLM25UP4CBVAKKU/" rel="external nofollow">report from Kuo (translated)</a> claims that Samsung Display is setting up a production line with the capacity of close to 8 million units. For context, the original <a automate_uuid="21ab807f-5d69-49f9-9213-2f7ad790c503" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-has-sold-1-million-galaxy-fold-units-worldwide/" rel="external nofollow">Galaxy Fold sold less than a million units</a>, and Samsung has been notoriously cagey about the exact number ever since.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Despite their growing popularity, foldables are still a pretty niche category, but an initial order of this size, if true, suggests Apple thinks it can be the company to finally push them into the mainstream. Then again, Apple has not had a ton of success with its recent foray into the niche mixed-reality segment with the Apple Vision Pro, so maybe its <a automate_uuid="b9b3c654-152d-47ce-ac3b-0a7244381d7e" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/a-cheaper-apple-vision-pro-model-seems-to-be-the-only-way-to-regain-app-developers-interest/" rel="external nofollow">magic touch has its limits</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, you should always take this sort of information with a grain of salt until you hear an official word from Apple. The specs are not finalized, and tech timelines can change depending on production issues or last-minute tweaks.
</p>

	Samsung has confirmed that support for its Tizen-powered smartwatches will officially end in September 2025. The decision marks the final phase of a gradual wind-down process that began last year and reflects the company’s strategic shift toward its Wear OS–powered devices from its own in-house Tizen. If you recall, the South Korean giant began moving away from<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsungs-tizen-based-smartwatches-will-get-three-years-of-support/" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow"> </a>it <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsungs-tizen-based-smartwatches-will-get-three-years-of-support/" rel="external nofollow">back in 2021</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The phase-out started on September 30, 2024, when the Galaxy Store stopped offering paid content for Tizen devices. This was followed by another key deadline on May 31, 2025, when new downloads of free Tizen content were disabled. Finally, by the end of September 2025 later this year, users will no longer be able to re-download any previously purchased content via the Galaxy Store.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	At the time, Samsung had shared the following timeline in an official "Tizen Watch Service Termination Schedule" notice as it <a href="https://seller.samsungapps.com/notice/getNoticeDetail.as?csNoticeID=0000009034" rel="external nofollow">wrote</a><span>:</span>
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>

	</p>

	<p>

	</p>

			</p>
		</li>
	</ul>
</blockquote>

<p>
	While Samsung has not specified the list of affected wearable devices that will no longer receive Tizen support after September 2025, the following products are likely to be getting the axe:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<strong>G</strong><strong>alaxy Gear Series</strong>

		<ul>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Gear (Original model)
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Gear 2
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Gear S2
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Gear S3 Classic
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Gear S3 Frontier
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Galaxy Watch Series (Tizen-based)</strong>
		<ul>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Watch (First Generation / Galaxy Watch 1)
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Watch Active
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2
			</li>
			<li>
				Samsung Galaxy Watch 3
			</li>
		</ul>
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Thus, devices launched after the Galaxy Watch3, including the Galaxy Watch4 series and subsequent models, are built on Wear OS and remain unaffected by this transition. On the flip side, Samsung is not planning to switch to Google TV for its TVs, as these still come preloaded with its own Tizen OS, and even offer <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-will-provide-seven-years-of-free-tizen-os-upgrades-for-its-ai-tvs/" rel="external nofollow">seven years of support</a>.

</figure>

<p>
	Apple announced Liquid Glass at <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/wwdc_2025/" rel="external nofollow">WWDC 2025</a> in all of its glory. It's a new glass-inspired design language from the iPhone-maker making its way to most of its software platforms, including <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-ios-26-with-windows-vista-like-liquid-glass-redesign/" rel="external nofollow">iOS 26</a>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ipados-26-is-now-official-with-improved-windowing-menu-bar-liquid-glass-redesign-more/" rel="external nofollow">iPadOS 26</a>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-introduces-macos-tahoe-with-a-new-phone-app-revamped-spotlight-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">macOS 26</a>, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tvos-26-arrives-with-karaoke-mode-updated-profile-switcher-liquid-glass-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">tvOS 26</a>, and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-watchos-26-with-a-workout-buddy-new-gestures-and-more/" rel="external nofollow">watchOS 26</a>.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple markets Liquid Glass as a new translucent material that "behaves like glass in the real world. Its color is informed by surrounding content and intelligently adapts between light and dark environments." The Cupertino giant isn't wrong. The new glass-inspired design does bring a fresh coat of paint and some beautiful visuals to the iPhone and other Apple-made devices.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, as the dust from the mega arrival settles, people are starting to realize the current drawbacks of having too much glass on their device. There have been reports of users, including those at Neowin, experiencing readability issues, background separation issues, and trouble focusing on the content displayed on the screen due to its transparent nature.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	While these are small nuances on Apple's part that can be fixed without much hassle, it's degrading the initial experience of what the company calls its biggest visual upgrade since iOS 7. That said, there are some workarounds built into iOS 26 that will help you tone down the shortcomings.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you're running the iOS 25 Developer Beta 1 on your supported iPhone model, you can follow these steps to make things a little better:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Liquid Glass transparency on iOS 26" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749727655_ios_26_liquid_glass_turn_on.webp">
</figure>

<ol>
	<li>
		Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.
	</li>
	<li>
		Scroll down and tap on Accessibility &gt; Display &amp; Text Size.
	</li>
	<li>
		Next, you'll find two toggle options: Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast.
	</li>
	<li>
		When you enable the Reduce Transparency toggle button, iOS 26 can "improve contrast by reducing transparency and blurs on some backgrounds to increase legibility."
	</li>
	<li>
		The other toggle, Increase Contrast, does what its name suggests. It can "increase color contrast between app foreground and background colors."
	</li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Enabling each of these toggle buttons individually or simultaneously will have different effects on your iPhone's user interface. Control Center is being criticized for the extra transparency, making the UI look cluttered and difficult to focus.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here, the Reduce Transparency button adds a darker background to make the Control Center UI elements stand out. Liquid Glass transparency issues are also prevalent in the Notification Center and the navigation controls of various apps.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Liquid Glass transparency on iOS 26" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749727634_ios_26_liquid_glass_transparency.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	In the image above, see how the text of the navigation buttons has become unreadable or hard to focus on with certain backgrounds. It's challenging to determine what can trigger such behavior, as one can have countless color combinations on their device.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the image below, this is how these buttons look when both Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast are enabled. It's still a hit or miss depending on what colors you are dealing with. Part of the blame also goes to the fact that iOS 26 is still an early beta, and the change doesn't render as intended every time.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Liquid Glass transparency on iOS 26" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749727641_ios_26_liquid_glass_transparency_2.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	You can also notice the difference in the look and feel of the Control Center when reduced transparency is turned on. On a side note, you can add the Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast buttons in the Control Center for quicker access.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Liquid Glass transparency on iOS 26" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749727648_ios_26_liquid_glass_control_center.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	That said, let's wait to see what changes Apple will implement as it continues to gather feedback through the beta program. Hopefully, the software will become more stable when the first public beta of iOS 26 arrives sometime in July. Interested users can try out the latest iPhone update through the developer beta program, noting that early builds might come with unexpected bugs and issues.

	OnePlus recently unveiled the mid-range <a href="https://www.oneplus.in/oneplus-13s" rel="external nofollow">OnePlus 13s</a> and the OnePlus Pad 3 Android tablet in India (the tablet is also <a href="https://www.oneplus.com/us/oneplus-pad-3" rel="external nofollow">coming to the U.S.</a>). Now, it appears that the company is working on another tablet, this time, a budget model called the OnePlus Pad Lite. Supposedly, it will be the successor to the <a href="https://www.oneplus.in/buy-oneplus-pad-go" rel="external nofollow">OnePlus Pad Go</a>, which launched in the U.K., India, and European countries.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to the leaked images, OnePlus Pad Lite follows the same design elements as earlier OnePlus tablets. The tablet is shown to have a circular camera at the center of the rear panel, with the logo sitting in the middle. The USB-C port and speaker grills are located on the right side frame of the tablet.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The alleged OnePlus Pad Lite measures 254.9 x 166.5 x 7.4mm and weighs 539 grams, which is slightly taller, wider, and thinner, but weighs less compared to the OnePlus Pad Go. The tablet, courtesy of <a href="https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/oneplus-pad-lite-design-specifications-leaked-exclusive/" rel="external nofollow">91Mobiles and OnLeaks</a>, is displayed in blue, which could be the only color option. One image shows the tablet with a cover that doubles as a kickstand, but may be sold separately.

	Based on the leaked specs, the OnePlus Pad Lite could feature an 11-inch LCD 1920x1080 resolution 90Hz display. It could be powered by the MediaTek Helio G100 processor and paired with the Mali G57 GPU. The tablet may come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage, with more storage and RAM options available at launch.

<p>
	Reportedly, the OnePlus Pad Lite could feature a 5MP primary camera and a 5MP selfie camera. Under the hood, it could be juiced by a 9,340 mAh battery. On the software side, OnePlus Pad Lite may come with OxygenOS 15.0.1 based on Android 15 out of the box.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There is no clarity on which market OnePlus plans to launch the OnePlus Pad Lite in. However, the report suggests that it could be priced under ₹20,000 (roughly $231).

	Despite introducing the bug in March, it may be September before Google fixes it.
</h3>

<p>
	Google's Pixel phones got a big update this week with the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/06/android-16-begins-rolling-out-today-to-pixel-devices/" rel="external nofollow">release of Android 16</a> and a batch of Pixel Drop features. Pixels now have enhanced security, new contact features, and improved button navigation. However, some of the most interesting features, like desktop windowing and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/05/google-reveals-vibrant-material-3-expressive-coming-soon-to-a-pixel-near-you/" rel="external nofollow">Material 3 Expressive</a>, are coming later. Another thing that's coming later, it seems, is a fix for an annoying bug Google introduced a few months back.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Google broke the system dark mode schedule <a href="https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/329802543/schedule-dark-theme-is-not-working?hl=en" rel="external nofollow">in its March Pixel update</a> and did not address it in time for Android 16. The company confirms a fix is coming, though.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The system-level dark theme arrives in Android 10 to offer a less eye-searing option, which is particularly handy in dark environments. It took a while for even Google's apps to fully adopt this feature, but support is solid five years later. Google even offers a scheduling feature to switch between light and dark mode at custom times or based on sunrise/sunset. However, the scheduling feature was busted in the March update.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Currently, if you manually toggle dark mode on or off, schedules stop working. The only way to get them back is to set up your schedule again and then never toggle dark mode. Google initially marked this as "<a href="https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/394471802" rel="external nofollow">intended behavior</a>," but a more recent <a href="https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/419213868" rel="external nofollow">bug report</a> was accepted as a valid issue.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It's an annoying bug and not the kind of thing Google would have previously left unfixed in a major version update. Yet the bug is still present in the latest stable build on Pixels. Google has confirmed the issue is part of its ongoing development for Android 16, but it didn't make it into the first release. A fix for this issue is <a href="https://developer.android.com/about/versions/16/release-notes-qpr#top-resolved-beta2" rel="external nofollow">being tested currently in Android 16 QPR1</a>—the "quarterly platform release" that will eventually become a Pixel Feature Drop.

<p>
	Android 16 QRP1, currently in its second beta release, is expected to be rolled out as a stable version in September. We also expect it to include the promised desktop windowing (currently in developer preview in QPR1 Beta 2) and the new Material theme. Google will do several more monthly patches in the interim, but the dark mode fix is not slated for inclusion.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In the past, it would be rare for a relatively simple UI bug like this to persist across Android versions, but the number doesn't matter as much as it used to. Android 16 lays the groundwork for several notable updates to the platform, but it's arriving months earlier than past versions did. Google used to release new Android updates in the fall, around the time that new Pixel phones launch. However, 2025 marks the beginning of a new dual-update system, with a major update in Q2 and a smaller one in Q4. Apparently, the race to get Android 16 out the door left this bug, as well as some big features, still in development.

	Federighi talks to Ars about why the iPad's Mac-style multitasking took so long.
</h3>

<p>
	CUPERTINO, Calif.—When Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi introduced the new multitasking UI in <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/06/apple-aims-for-more-personal-and-expressive-ios-26-with-new-liquid-glass-design/" rel="external nofollow">iPadOS 26</a> at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference this week, he did it the same way he introduced the Calculator app for the iPad last year, or timers in the iPad's Clock app <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/ipados-18-could-ship-with-built-in-calculator-app-after-14-calculator-less-years/" rel="external nofollow">the year before</a>—with a hint of sarcasm.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Wow," Federighi enthuses in a lightly exaggerated tone about an hour and 19 minutes into <a href="https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/101/" rel="external nofollow">a 90-minute presentation</a>. "More windows, a pointier pointer, and a menu bar? Who would've thought? We've <em>truly</em> pulled off a <em>mind-blowing </em>release!"
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This elicits a sensible chuckle from the gathered audience of developers, media, and Apple employees watching the keynote on the Apple Park campus, where I have grabbed myself a good-not-great seat to watch the largely pre-recorded keynote on a gigantic outdoor screen.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Federighi is acknowledging—and lightly poking fun at—the audience of developers, pro users, and media personalities who have been asking for years that Apple's iPad behave more like a traditional computer. And after many incremental steps, including a big swing and partial miss with the buggy, limited Stage Manager interface a couple of years ago, Apple has finally responded to requests for Mac-like multitasking with a distinctly Mac-like interface, an improved file manager, and better support for running tasks in the background.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But if this move was so forehead-slappingly obvious, why did it take so long to get here? This is one of the questions we dug into when we sat down with Federighi and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak for a post-keynote chat earlier this week.
</p>

<h2>
	It used to be about hardware restrictions
</h2>

<p>
	People have been trying to <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2011/09/doable-or-not-my-experience-with-working-for-ars-on-the-ipad/" rel="external nofollow">use iPads</a> (and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2011/08/the-ipad-is-a-personal-computer-true-or-false/" rel="external nofollow">make a philosophical case for them</a>) as quote-unquote real computers practically from the moment they were introduced 15 years ago.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But those early iPads lacked so much of what we expect from modern PCs and Macs, most notably robust multi-window multitasking and the ability for third-party apps to exchange data. The first iPads were almost literally just iPhone internals connected to big screens, with just a fraction of the RAM and storage available in the Macs of the day; that necessitated the use of a blown-up version of the iPhone's operating system and the iPhone's one-full-screen-app-at-a-time interface.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"If you want to rewind all the way to the time we introduced Split View and Slide Over [in iOS 9], you have to start with the grounding that the iPad is a direct manipulation touch-first device," Federighi told Ars. "It is a foundational requirement that if you touch the screen and start to move something that it responds. Otherwise, the entire interaction model is broken—it's a psychic break with your contract with the device."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Mac users, Federighi said, were more tolerant of small latency on their devices because they were already manipulating apps on the screen indirectly, but the iPads of a decade or so ago "didn't have the capacity to run an unlimited number of windowed apps with perfect responsiveness."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p class="p1">
	It’s also worth noting the technical limitations of iPhone and iPad apps at the time, which up until then had mostly been designed and coded to match the specific screen sizes and resolutions of the (then-manageable) number of iDevices that existed. It simply wasn’t possible for the apps of the day to be dynamically resized as desktop windows are, because no one was coding their apps that way.

<p>
	Of course, those hardware limitations no longer exist. <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/11/ipad-pro-review-mac-like-speed-with-all-the-virtues-and-limitations-of-ios/" rel="external nofollow">Apple’s iPad Pros</a> started boosting the tablets’ processing power, RAM, and storage in earnest in the late 2010s, and Apple introduced a Microsoft Surface-like keyboard and stylus accessories that moved the iPad away from its role as a content consumption device. For years now, Apple’s faster tablets have been based on the same hardware as its slower Macs—we know the hardware can do more because Apple is already doing more with it elsewhere.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"Over time the iPad's gotten more powerful, the screens have gotten larger, the user base has shifted into a mode where there is a little bit more trackpad and keyboard use in how many people use the device," Federighi told Ars. "And so the stars kind of aligned to where many of the things that you traditionally do with a Mac were possible to do on an iPad for the first time and still meet iPad's basic contract."

	On correcting some of Stage Manager’s problems

				<em><span class="caption-credit mt-2 text-xs"><em>Credit: Apple </em></span> </em>
			</div>
		</div>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	Apple has already tried a windowed multitasking system on modern iPads once this decade, of course, with iPadOS 16's Stage Manager interface.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Any first crack at windowed multitasking on the iPad was going to have a steep climb. This was the first time Apple or its developers had needed to content with truly dynamically resizable app windows in iOS or iPadOS, the first time Apple had implemented a virtual memory system on the iPad, and the first time Apple had tried true multi-monitor support. Stage Manager was in such rough shape that Apple delayed that year's iPadOS release to keep working on it.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But the biggest problem with Stage Manager was actually that it just didn't work on a whole bunch of iPads. You could only use it on new expensive models—if you had a new cheap model or even an <em>older</em> expensive model, your iPad was stuck with the older Slide Over and Split View modes that had been designed around the hardware limitations of mid-2010s iPads.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We wanted to offer a new baseline of a totally consistent experience of what it meant to have Stage Manager," Federighi told Ars. "And for us, that meant four simultaneous apps on the internal display and an external display with four simultaneous apps. So, eight apps running at once. And we said that's the baseline, and that's what it means to be Stage Manager; we didn't want to say 'you get Stage Manager, but you get Stage Manager-lite here or something like that. And so immediately that established a floor for how low we could go."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Fixing that was one of the primary goals of the new windowing system.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We decided this time: make everything we can make available," said Federighi, "even if it has some nuances on older hardware, because we saw so much demand [for Stage Manager]."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	That slight change in approach, combined with other behind-the-scenes optimizations, makes the new multitasking model more widely compatible than Stage Manager is. There are still limits on those devices—not to the number of windows you can open, but to how many of those windows can be active and up-to-date at once. And true multi-monitor support would remain the purview of the faster, more-expensive models.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"We have discovered many, many optimizations," Federighi said. "We re-architected our windowing system and we re-architected the way that we manage background tasks, background processing, that enabled us to squeeze more out of other devices than we were able to do at the time we introduced Stage Manager."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Stage Manager still exists in iPadOS 26, but as an optional extra multitasking mode that you have to choose to enable instead of the new windowed multitasking system. You can also choose to turn both multitasking systems off entirely, preserving the iPad's traditional big-iPhone-for-watching-Netflix interface for the people who prefer it.
</p>

<h2>
	“iPad's gonna be iPad”
</h2>

<figure class="ars-wp-img-shortcode id-2081936 align-fullwidth">
	<div>
		<img alt="IMG_2873-1024x576.jpeg" class="ipsImage" decoding="async" height="720" width="720" src="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/IMG_2873-1024x576.jpeg">

				<em><span class="caption-credit mt-2 text-xs"><em>Credit: Andrew Cunningham </em></span> </em>
			</div>
		</div>
	</figcaption>
</figure>

<p>
	However, while the new iPadOS 26 UI takes big steps toward the Mac's interface, the company still tries to treat them as different products with different priorities. To date, that has meant no touch screens on the Mac (despite <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/01/apple-is-testing-touchscreens-for-macs-but-it-wouldnt-be-the-first-time/" rel="external nofollow">years of rumors</a>), and it will continue to mean that there are some Mac things that the iPad will remain unable to do.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"But we've looked and said, as [the iPad and Mac] come together, where on the iPad the Mac idiom for doing something, like where we put the window close controls and maximize controls, what color are they—we've said why not, where it makes sense, use a converged design for those things so it's familiar and comfortable," Federighi told Ars. "But where it doesn't make sense, iPad's gonna be iPad."
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There will still be limitations and frustrations when trying to fit an iPad into a Mac-shaped hole in your computing setup. While tasks can run in the background, for example, Apple only allows apps to run workloads with a definitive endpoint, things like a video export or a file transfer. System agents or other apps that perform some routine on-and-off tasks continuously in the background aren’t supported. All the demos we’ve seen so far are also on new, high-end iPad hardware, and it remains to be seen how well the new features behave on low-end tablets like the 11th-generation A16 iPad, or old 2019-era hardware like the iPad Air 3.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But it does feel like Apple has finally settled on a design that might stick, and that adds capability to the iPad without wrecking its simplicity for the people who still just want a big screen for reading and streaming.

	There will be a mandatory update for a ‘subset’ of Pixel 6A phones.

<p>
	Earlier this year, Google shipped a Pixel 4A update to some owners that lowered <a href="/2025/1/7/24338566/google-pixel-4a-battery-stability-replacement-reduced-capacity" rel="">battery life</a> to <a href="/news/627543/google-pixel-4a-battery-update-overheating-recall" rel="">mitigate overheating risk</a>, and soon, it’s going to do the same for the Pixel 6A.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“A subset of Pixel 6A phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating,” Google’s Alex Moriconi says in a statement to <em>The Verge</em>. “The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.”

<p>
	As reported <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/pixel-6a-battery-overheating-warning-3566640/" rel="external nofollow">by <em>Android Authority</em></a>, at least two users have reported instances of their Pixel 6A phones catching fire, with one person on Reddit saying their Pixel 6A <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/1knwuh8/my_google_pixel_6a_spontaneously_combusted_in_the/" rel="external nofollow">“spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night.”</a> <em>Android Authority</em> also spotted code strings in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 release alerting Pixel 6A users to “a potential battery overheating issue” and pointing toward a support page at <a href="http://g.co/pixel/6abattery" rel="external nofollow">g.co/pixel/6abattery</a> that currently isn’t live.

						The official release date for Android 16 is June 10. This release is earlier than usual (last year’s release was September), and Google has already scheduled another “minor” release, maybe Android 16.1, for the last quarter of 2025. The developer preview of Android 16 was first released in November 2024, and Google dropped beta releases in January, February, March, and April 2025.

					<p>

					</p>

					<p>
						Beta releases are more stable than developer previews, but some bugs are likely, and there are a few hoops to jump through to install them, so it’s not recommended for everyone. Top Android 16 Features
</h2>

<p>
	These are the features and improvements coming in Android 16 we're most excited about. You can learn more at <a class="external-link" data-event-boundary="click" data-event-click='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-in-view='{"pattern":"ExternalLink"}' data-include-experiments="true" data-offer-url="https://developer.android.com/about/versions/16" href="https://developer.android.com/about/versions/16" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank">Google’s developer site</a>, and make sure to read <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/googles-android-chief-hopes-its-new-era-will-get-people-to-ditch-their-iphones/" rel="external nofollow">our interview with Google’s Android chief</a> about his hopes for the platform.
</p>

<h2>
	Live Updates
</h2>

<p>
	Google is introducing real-time tracking into your Android notifications for services, like food delivery and navigation. Instead of having to open up the relevant app, you’ll see live updates in the notification showing when your Uber will arrive or what turn to take next if you’re traveling somewhere using directions. These Live Updates will be the top notification and also appear on the Always-on Display, so you can see at a glance when your food will arrive via an app like DoorDash. Pull down to expand the notification, and you’ll see a progress bar and quick links to actions, such as the option to call or message the driver.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Similar to Live Activities in Apple’s iOS, Live Updates may be implemented slightly differently by each manufacturer. Samsung apparently plans to roll Live Updates into its Now Bar that sits at the bottom of the lock screen, while OnePlus will integrate them into its existing Live Alerts system.
</p>

<h2>
	Advanced Protection Mode
</h2>

<p>
	This new extra-secure mode in Android 16 is for at-risk folks, like public figures, journalists, and activists, who need extra protection for their digital lives. <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/google-advanced-protection-vulnerable-users-lockdown-android-16/" rel="external nofollow">Google’s Advanced Protection</a> already exists for Google accounts, but now extends to Android 16, imposing tough security settings on apps and services to keep your data safe. It includes checks on memory to block exploits, USB protection, and guards against unsafe websites and spam calls and messages. A later release will add intrusion detection by keeping a permanent end-to-end encrypted log from your device in the cloud, which can be shared and analyzed by a security expert if you suspect there’s a problem.
</p>

<h2>
	AI-Powered Scam Detection
</h2>

<p>
	Sadly, fraud is big business. Most folks have seen a scam on their phone at some point, whether disguised as tech support, a prize, or a crypto investment opportunity. <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/google-io-on-device-ai-scam-texts/" rel="external nofollow">Google is using on-device AI to spot scam texts</a> with the Scam Detection feature in Google Messages. It runs locally on-device, so no message content is shared, and shows a pop-up warning to folks when it discovers a suspected scam, warning them of the risk and offering the opportunity to report and block the scammer. Some permissions will also be blocked during phone calls, so scammers can no longer walk people through the process to sideload a malicious app.
</p>

<h2>
	Medical Records
</h2>

<p>
	Health Connect enables different health, fitness, and wellbeing apps to share data covering your health in certain categories (Activity, Body Measurement, Cycle Tracking, Nutrition, Sleep, and Vitals). Google is now adding support for Electronic Health Records (EHRs) using the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard widely used by healthcare providers. It’s unclear exactly how this will work or what data it will include, but it may make sharing health records easier.
</p>

<h2>
	Auracast Broadcast Support
</h2>

<p>
	As one of the newest <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/what-is-bluetooth/" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">Bluetooth features</a>, Auracast enables <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/audio-streaming-for-hearing-aids/" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">audio streaming to hearing aids</a> and other supported devices in public spaces. Several people can use it to connect to the same audio stream simultaneously and get audio from TVs in public spaces like the gym, for example, or stream audio directly to hearing aids at a public concert. Android 16 supports broadcasting, so you can go to <strong>Settings</strong> &gt; <strong>Connected devices</strong> &gt; <strong>Audio sharing</strong> and choose to share audio from your device with nearby devices that support Bluetooth LE Audio, which includes Auracast.
</p>

<h2>
	Better Support for Bigger Screens
</h2>

<p>
	While some apps restrict resizing and screen orientation, Google is removing this default capability in Android 16. Every app should now adapt to different screen sizes and aspect ratios, including tablets and folding phones. Google also wants developers to ensure that app content is displayed edge to edge.
</p>

<h2>
	Hide Sensitive Notifications
</h2>

<p>
	Google is redacting content in sensitive notifications, such as One-Time Passwords (OTPs), when it detects the potential risk of someone else seeing the notification. This might be if you are not connected to your home Wi-Fi and haven’t unlocked your phone in a while.
</p>

<h2>
	More Legible Text
</h2>

<p>
	For folks with low vision and reduced contrast sensitivity, Google is detecting text that might be an issue and drawing a high-contrast color box underneath it to ensure the text is as legible as possible.
</p>

<h2>
	LE Audio Hearing Aids Features
</h2>

<p>
	There are a couple of notable new features for folks using Bluetooth LE Audio hearing aids with Android 16. First is the option to switch between the built-in microphones on the hearing aids and the microphone on your phone for voice calls. Second is the ability to adjust the ambient sound volume picked up by your hearing aid's microphones. Both could prove helpful in noisy environments with a lot of background noise.
</p>

<h2>
	Enhanced Camera for Pro Photographers
</h2>

<p>
	Google is pushing a host of small camera improvements in Android 16 for keen photographers. There’s hybrid auto exposure, allowing a balance of automatic and manual ISO and exposure control, precise color temperature and tint adjustments, better night mode support for apps, and support for Ultra HDR images in the HEIC file format. Google is also adding the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for higher-quality video recording and post-processing.
</p>

<h2>
	Windowing Apps
</h2>

<p>
	Have you ever wished Android was more like Windows? Support for desktop windowing, enabling you to run multiple apps simultaneously, is in the works. Multitaskers will be able to resize windows, and the new feature will work seamlessly with split screen (just <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/the-ipad-is-a-full-on-computer-now/" rel="external nofollow">like the new iPadOS 26</a>!). Google is also adding connected display support, so you can attach an external display to your Android device and discover <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/ultrawide-portrait-computer-monitors-rave/" rel="external nofollow">the joys of a dual screen setup</a>. Currently part of the developer preview, this won't come to your Android tablet until later this year.
</p>

<h2>
	Fresh Design
</h2>

<p>
	The latest evolution of Google’s Android design language is Material 3 Expressive. While it’s not a complete overhaul, it is <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/android-16-gemini-new-features/" rel="external nofollow">giving Android a facelift</a> with fresh new animations, better haptic feedback, more dynamic color themes, impactful fonts, and more chances to personalize your Android device. Google has done its homework, drawing on 46 studies with more than 18,000 participants to make changes that people of all ages approved.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Before you get too excited, Material 3 Expressive won’t be part of the June release, instead rolling out on Pixel phones first, later this year, and then on other Android devices. Impatient folks may get a sneak peek by signing up for the <a href="https://www.google.com/android/beta" rel="external nofollow">Android Beta Program</a>.

	After months of swirling rumors, Apple kicked off its WWDC 2025 event today. The event was mostly focused on a slew of new AI-driven features for Apple devices and the company's new operating systems, which carry the Liquid Glass design.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-ios-26-with-windows-vista-like-liquid-glass-redesign/" rel="external nofollow">iOS 26 was the flagship of the event</a> as it posed to alter the user experience of Apple's best-selling product, the iPhone. During the event, Apple announced the list of compatible iPhone models with iOS 26. Here is the list:

	If you own any of these iPhone models, you can expect to receive the first iOS 26 public beta next month via the Apple Beta Software Program. Also, developers can already access iOS 26 beta through the Apple Developer Program. The stable version is expected to drop in September with the iPhone 17 series.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The above list of compatible iPhones with iOS 26 also signifies the end of software support for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. It's important to note that these models might still receive security updates from Apple to safeguard the device against potential threats.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple calls iOS 26 "our broadest design update ever." It includes significant upgrades and changes compared to the previous version, though the final thoughts about the experience will be determined after the first beta hits users' devices next month.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	iOS 26 is also heavily focused on AI capabilities as Apple has expanded the footprint of its Apple Intelligence suite to almost every corner of the operating system.

	At WWDC 2025, Apple announced iOS 26, a major software update with the biggest redesign since iOS 7 in 2013. With iOS 26 (other Apple-made operating systems now also carry the number 26 for more unified naming), Apple is introducing "Liquid Glass," a new material across the operating system, featuring Windows Vista-like glass material with translucency, reflections, light refraction, parallax, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Here is what Apple's senior VP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, said about the release:
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		iOS 26 shines with the gorgeous new design and meaningful improvements to the features users rely on every day, making iPhone even more helpful. Experiences are more expressive and personal, from the Lock Screen and Home Screen, to new capabilities across Phone and Messages that help users focus on the connections that matter most.
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The redesigned UI is available on the Lock Screen and Home Screen, giving you more ways to personalize your iPhone and iPad. The Lock Screen can now generate a 3D effect for your photos and keep the most interesting parts of them as you receive notifications.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	With iOS 26, Apple is introducing new Apple Intelligence capabilities like Live Translation in iMessage, FaceTime, and Phone, allowing users to communicate across languages and translate text on the fly. You can also ask ChatGPT questions about what is happening on the screen, and Genmoji can mix your favorite emojis.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple also redesigned the Phone app with a new UI and Call Screening feature, which eliminates interruptions by gathering information from the caller to let the user decide if they want to pick up the call. iMessage can filter out messages from unknown callers, set backgrounds for your chats, add polls, and display typing indicators in group chats.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple Music now features Lyric Translations so you can understand music in foreign languages, and Lyrics Pronunciations will help you sing along regardless of language. Additionally, iOS 26 features a new Apple Games app, a single place for all your games, improved parental controls, new accessibility features, and more.

	iPadOS 26, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/ipados-26-is-now-official-with-improved-windowing-menu-bar-liquid-glass-redesign-more/" rel="external nofollow">announced at WWDC 2025 on June 9</a>, introduces many upgrades to the iPad experience, which brings it a few steps closer to the long-promised "laptop replacement." The operating system now has a much better window management system that lets you place any window wherever you like it, a proper menu bar, and the classic window controls straight from macOS.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	On top of that, iPadOS 26 features the redesigned user interface with "Liquid Glass" elements that resemble the UI of Windows Vista and Windows 7 back in the day. Overall, the update looks promising, but not all iPads will be able to upgrade from iPadOS 18 to iPadOS 26. Here is a list of iPads that are compatible with the new operating system:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation (A12X) and newer
	</li>
	<li>
		iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation (A12X) and newer
	</li>
	<li>
		iPad Air 3rd generation (A12) and newer
	</li>
	<li>
		iPad 8 (A12) and newer
	</li>
	<li>
		iPad mini 5th generation (A12) and newer
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With iPadOS 26, Apple is dropping only one iPad: the iPad 7 with the A10 Fusion. From now on, iPadOS is only compatible with iPads running an A12 chip (regular or X).
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first developer beta of iPadOS 26 is now available. Apple plans to start public testing in July, but exact dates are not available as of right now, so stay tuned for future announcements. As expected, today, at WWDC 2025, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-ios-26-with-windows-vista-like-liquid-glass-redesign/" rel="external nofollow">Apple announced iOS 26 </a>and other operating systems that now carry the 26 version number (for simplicity). iPadOS is also part of the big redesign, and it is now official with the new Liquid Glass design, improved window controls, a Mac-like menu bar, file management enhancements, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition to the general Liquid Glass redesign, which is now present across all of Apple's operating systems, iPadOS 26 received several iPad-exclusive upgrades. It now has a reworked windowing system that helps you organize and switch between apps. You can finally place and resize apps exactly how you want. Plus, iPadOS now has familiar window controls: three buttons for closing, minimizing, and resizing your app. Straight from macOS.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">

</figure>

<p>
	Apps can now remember their previous size and position, and Expose can show you all open windows. Finally, iPadOS now has a menu bar, which is another thing that comes from macOS. It gives access to common actions, commands, and features. Developers can customize the menu bar in their apps and specify what features are available there.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	Apple is also upgrading the Files app with a reworked List view, which now shows more details about your files and the ability to expand or collapse folders. Plus, you can customize folders with colors and emojis, pin folders to the dock, and set default apps for file types. When working with long-running processes, background tasks show up as live activities, so that you can track Final Cut exports or the Files app moving stuff around.
</p>

</figure>

<p>
	Other changes in iPadOS 26 include improved audio controls and the ability to select audio input source and record audio with voice isolation. The Journal app is now available on the iPad, Notes received markdown support, and Calculator now supports 3D graphing capabilities. Apple has unveiled watchOS 26, another operating system under the new naming scheme (all of Apple's systems now feature the same version number to match the current/upcoming year) and "Liquid Glass" Redesign. The latter is a dynamic interface that features translucency, reflections, parallax, and other visual candy.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Aside from the redesign and a new number, Apple is introducing new health and workout features. Workout Buddy is a feature that offers personalized, spoken motivation during workouts. It analyzes your pace, heart rate, and fitness history, delivering real-time encouragement and more engagement, like having someone else work out next to you, providing useful information and cheering you up. Here is an example of what you will hear with Workout Buddy:
</p>

<blockquote class="QuoteNewsStyle">
	<p>
		Way to get your workout in! You went 4.3 miles in just over 38 minutes. Your average pace was 8 minutes and 58 seconds, and your average heart rate was 128. That was your longest run of the last 28 days. What will you do next?
	</p>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The Workout app also has a more streamlined interface with four buttons in the corners for quick access to favorite features during workouts. You can set up music and podcasts right in the Workout app so that your favorite content starts playing when you begin your workout.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In addition, Apple announced a new one-handed wrist flick gesture that allows users to dismiss notifications with a quick flick, which is convenient when you cannot use your both hands to interact with your watch. Other changes include the Notes app, which now lets you access notes on the Apple Watch, Hold Assist and Call Screening in the Phone app, Live Listen with real-time Live Captions of what the iPhone hears, improvements to the Photos face, and more.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	watchOS 26 will be available later this year, and the first developer betas are expected soon.

	<a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/tags/wwdc_2025/" rel="external nofollow">WWDC 2025</a> is now live, and Apple has <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/apple-announces-ios-26-with-windows-vista-like-liquid-glass-redesign/" rel="external nofollow">finally renamed</a> all of its operating systems to version 26. This year, we have tvOS 26 for the Apple TV, featuring the freshly-baked Liquid Glass software design.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apple <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2025/06/apple-tv-brings-a-beautiful-redesign-and-enhanced-home-entertainment-experience/" rel="external nofollow">explained</a> that Liquid Glass brings a fresh and vibrant look to Apple TV, "delivering a fresh and expressive design that beautifully reflects and refracts its surroundings using real-time rendering." Content is the primary focus of the experience when you fast-forward, rewind, or change a setting from the Control Center.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Apple tvOS 26 features" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749493913_tvos_26_liquid_glass.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	The redesigned Apple TV app now features new poster art for movies and TV shows, with a touch of Liquid Glass. Users can now choose whether to display the profile switcher UI when their Apple TV wakes up, allowing them to quickly access their Watchlist and recommendations in the TV app, as well as playlists in Apple Music.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Speaking of Apple Music, your iPhone can now double as a handheld microphone for Apple TV. The new karaoke mode allows multiple users to queue up songs from their iPhones and sing along, with support for lyrics translation and pronunciation.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="Apple tvOS 26 features" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749493929_tvos_26_sing_in_apple_music.webp">

<p>
	Apple has updated the FaceTime experience to make it consistent with iPhone. Contact Posters introduced with iOS 17 are now available on Apple TV, which display a contact's customized photo and name when starting a FaceTime call.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Live Captions support on FaceTime now includes French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Spanish. FaceTime on Apple TV has been updated to display phone and voice call notifications for active profiles. Users can use their connected HomePod speakers or iPhone to answer them.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Apart from that, tvOS 26 also brings new Aerial screen savers, featuring India's Goa and Kerala. Users can also personalize their screensaver experience and designate any AirPlay-enabled speaker as the permanent speaker for Apple TV.
</p>

<figure class="image image--expandable">
	<img alt="tvOS 26 profile switcher" class="ipsImage" height="405" width="720" src="https://cdn.neowin.com/news/images/uploaded/2025/06/1749494142_apple_tvos_26_profile_switcher.webp">
</figure>

<p>
	tvOS 26 has also made the sign-in experience a bit easier for users. Developers can link app logins to an Apple account, making it quicker for users to access their apps and content when setting up a new device.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The new tvOS update is now available for testing through the Apple Developer Program, supported on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later). Meanwhile, the updated sing-along feature is available on iPhone 11 and later with Apple TV 4K (3rd generation).

	Microsoft's former CEO claims that the company was too confident in Windows, preventing it from succeeding in the mobile market.

<p>
	Over the past few years, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/bill-gates-calls-losing-mobile-race-android-was-his-greatest-mistake-ever" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/bill-gates-calls-losing-mobile-race-android-was-his-greatest-mistake-ever" rel="external nofollow">Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has openly acknowledged that the company fumbled the smartphone war</a>, which set back the tech giant a whopping $400 billion. <em>"The greatest mistake of all time is the mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is," </em>Gates added.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	However, Android co-founder Rich Miner seemingly shared a different account about Microsoft's missed opportunity in the mobile computing landscape, suggesting that <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/android-cofounder-bill-gates-responsible-for-the-greatest-mistake-of-all-time" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/android-cofounder-bill-gates-responsible-for-the-greatest-mistake-of-all-time" rel="external nofollow">Bill Gates was at fault more than he was letting on</a>.

<p>
	According to Miner:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<em>"I literally helped create Android to prevent Microsoft from controlling the phone the way they did the PC - stifling innovation. So it's always funny for me to hear Gates whine about losing mobile to Android."</em>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	And now, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has seemingly corroborated Miner's sentiments. In a recent <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-hl-processed="none" data-url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYC49_aeop0" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYC49_aeop0" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" target="_blank" rel="external nofollow">interview on the Acquired podcast</a>, the executive admitted that Microsoft was overly confident in <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" data-auto-tag-linker="true" data-before-rewrite-localise="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows" href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows" rel="external nofollow">Windows</a>, preventing it from capitalizing on the mobile landscape.

<p>
	Ballmer further indicated that the software giant attempted to force Windows into "unsuitable" markets rather than developing platform-specific solutions tailored to meet the needs of these markets.

	Ballmer pointed at Windows Mobile and automotive apps as classic examples where Microsoft attempted to tap into new markets with Windows APIs and a user interface rife with unnatural experiences.

Ballmer further recalled that Microsoft's missed opportunity in the smartphone landscape emanated from <em>"paranoia and confidence"</em> in Windows.

			The executive further revealed that the company viewed Windows as its <em>"birthright," </em>giving it a free pass to venture into new markets. As such, Microsoft struggled to compete with superior experiences and platforms when it decided to venture into media center apps and TV integration — its simplified versions of Windows didn't cut it.

	Apple is sharing details about its next big iOS update.
</h3>

<p>
	Apple has unveiled iOS 26, the next version of its iPhone operating system, as part of its suite of announcements at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). It features a complete redesign with Apple’s new “Liquid Glass” design language.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The announcement marks a change in how Apple signifies its major updates to iOS. Under the previous marketing scheme, this year’s major release would have been iOS 19 — the direct follow-up to iOS 18. But now, Apple’s big iOS updates will be numbered based on the year following their introduction, a little bit like car-makers do with new car releases.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	A bunch of elements of the operating system are getting a major facelift as a result of the redesign. The time on your lockscreen can stretch to fill more of the screen. The Camera app has a more streamlined layout – many controls are now hidden to make the experience feel cleaner. In Safari, webpages are edge-to-edge, and the tab bar floats over your content.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is also Apple’s second major iOS update following the introduction of the company’s Apple Intelligence AI features. iOS 18 received some basic AI features like tools to improve writing, Genmoji for custom emoji, and integration with ChatGPT. But some big promised upgrades to Siri, like the ability to take action based on what it could see on your phone, <a href="/news/626035/apple-delays-upgraded-siri-intelligence-longer-than-we-thought" rel="">were delayed</a> ahead of their expected launch.

	Is the iPad more Mac, or more iPhone? Apple’s still trying to figure that out.
</h3>

<p>
	The iPad is getting a big refresh this year: <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2025/06/ipados-26-introduces-powerful-new-features-that-push-ipad-even-further/" rel="external nofollow">Apple just announced</a> the new version of iPadOS, its tablet operating system, at WWDC. The flagship feature is a new windowing system for multitasking across apps, but there’s also a new Files app, more Apple Intelligence features, and a Mac-like Preview app for looking at and editing PDFs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	As usual, the new iPadOS has a lot in common with the new iOS, including the new Vision Pro-inspired visual language called “Liquid Glass.” The updated name also follows Apple’s overall scheme, switching from version numbers to years. The iPad tends to differ in its approach to multitasking, how you move between apps, and around the operating system. Power users have asked Apple for years to give them more ways to use multiple apps at once, or even <em>see </em>multiple apps at a time.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The iPad has always straddled the Mac and iPhone, and there are arguments that it should be more like one or the other rather than squarely in the middle. The rumors ahead of this year’s WWDC seemed to suggest a more Mac-centric take, including that Apple would add a permanent menu bar to the top of the screen.

	Google Play Store is the main venue for Android users to download applications. While <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-bolsters-its-anti-scam-efforts-across-asia-pacific/" rel="external nofollow">Google has strict rules and policies</a> for verifying apps, some malicious apps somehow slip through anyway. Meanwhile, when it comes to crypto wallet apps, both Google app auditors and Play Store users need to be even more cautious.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://cyble.com/blog/crypto-phishing-applications-on-the-play-store/" rel="external nofollow">Cyble Research and Intelligence Labs</a> has identified at least 20 crypto phishing applications on the Google Play Store that impersonate legitimate and popular crypto wallet apps and try to steal users' crypto credentials. By impersonation, these malicious apps trick users into downloading them and then start to capture the user's actual login data.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	"What makes this campaign particularly dangerous is the use of seemingly legitimate applications, hosted under previously benign or compromised developer accounts, combined with a large-scale phishing infrastructure linked to over 50 domains. This extends the campaign's reach and lowers the likelihood of immediate detection by traditional defenses." Cyble writes.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some of these malicious apps have the same name but come with a different package name. After removing duplicate names, here's the list of 9 newly discovered crypto phishing applications on the Play Store:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Pancake Swap
	</li>
	<li>
		Suite Wallet
	</li>
	<li>
		Hyperliquid
	</li>
	<li>
		Raydium
	</li>
	<li>
		BullX Crypto
	</li>
	<li>
		OpenOcean Exchange
	</li>
	<li>
		Meteora Exchange
	</li>
	<li>
		SushiSwap
	</li>
	<li>
		Harvest Finance Blog
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	According to Cyble, these apps prompt users to enter their 12-word mnemonic phrase to access the fake crypto wallet. Also, scammers use accounts that were previously used to distribute legitimate apps to minimize the risk of getting caught by Google. These accounts are more likely to be compromised and then taken over by scammers.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you've downloaded any of these fake crypto wallet apps from the Play Store, make sure to delete them as soon as possible. In 2024, revenue from crypto scams <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/crypto-scams-likely-set-new-record-2024-helped-by-ai-chainalysis-says-2025-02-14/" rel="external nofollow">was estimated to be around $9.9 billion</a>. This billion-dollar crypto scam business is expected to grow massively in 2025 thanks to AI.
